Comments of Ross Bakery
M.
3.5
Pies were a better standard than the typical frozen highway fare but fairly average as far as bakeries go.
Wasn't a big fan of the scallop pie, with the scallops not tasting overly fresh. Prefered the lamb pie, but both were a bit small for the price.
I'd probably recommend coming here instead of the other bakery in Ross but lower your expectations from some of these other reviews (best pie of your life etc.)
O. H.
Lovely bakery on our inland return to Hobart. The famed Kiki’s Delivery Service bakery! We enjoyed a steak pie, scallop pie and their famous vanilla slice. The pastry at Ross Bakery is its real winner - flaky and delicious!!! The vanilla slice definitely deserves its reputation as one of Australia’s best. The service, additionally, was lovely. Many famous bakeries lose that lovely service - not Ross Bakery! Definitely a must in Tassie.
S. A.
Super yummy salad with our pies. Sat outside under the gorgeous big tree. Such a beautiful place for a date.
A. L.
Only the best bakery goods in Australia. I've been to a plethora of bakeries, in every state, and not many come close to their Vanilla slice or pies.
Unfortunately this has resulted in having to stop there on every trip to Launceston/Hobart.
Make sure to check open hours though, closed on some weekdays, which is a shame!
C. J.
It was so good. best vanilla slice and amazing wood fired sour dough. Best bakery ever
L. G. B.
Cute little bakery in this old historic town. I had a vegan pasty which was very tasty. It had a lot of turmeric in it which was a hit for me! Vanilla slice was good too.
We ate inside as it was a cold day. Love the old building- lots of character.
J. B.
One of the best bakeries I’ve ever visited, and I’ve seen hundreds. A sourdough with a crust that is devine. The scallop pie was amazing and the vanilla slice was spot on. Bundle that up with some good ole country customer service and you cannot afford to skip this little gem.
I. T.
Omg the best pies, vanilla slice and apple slice I've tasted, definitely worth stopping bye for lunch
M. K.
Scollap put and vanilla slice always stop on my trips good work covid safe outdoor setting
C. K.
Lovely sitting in courtyard having coffee this morning. Fantastic vanilla slice-really fresh and great coffee. Friendly efficient service.
M. D.
Had a greatvisit to the original Wood Fired Ross Village Bakery.
Great friendly, helpful service from the lovely Libby we when go to have a look in the oven.
Best lemon square ever.
We will be back for sure
S. H.
Had a club get together here today. They put us all together in a new venue next door. Thanks for a great venue and lunch. And the vanilla slice, wow. 👍👍👍
E. H.
Charming bakery in a country town. Friendly staff. Had scallop pie with salad and vanilla slice. Lived up to the expectations. Would definitely visit again.
M. W.
The reviews don't lie. Best vanilla slices ever!
L. S. (.
Vanilla slice definitely lives up to its name of the best in Tasmania, if not Australia!
B. B.
BEST scallop pie in Ross (we compared both) ! Vanilla slice was on point ! Great, efficient service
N. H.
The MOST AMAZING French vanilla slice you'll ever have touch your lips! Must visit
C. W.
Gorgeous little bakery, great bakery items, worth the little detour off the highway into the historic town.
J. K.
The most delicious vanilla slice, really good lamb, mint and pea pie but the scallop pie let them down today. Over cooked and dry. Excellent coffee and great service. The pies and coffee piping hot and served in good time.
J. S.
Love it, drove 1 1/2 hours for a scallop pie and vanilla slice, totally worth it.
K. R.
Ross Bakery is famous for the scallop pies baked there. And they are pretty good. Crisp pastry and filled with scallops and a laksa flavoured gravy. Surprisingly few veggies, so you get a very decent load of seafood. But the jewel in the bakeries crown is surely the Custard Slice. Light airy custard filling between crisp layers of pastry. Not too sweet, but as Goldilocks said, 'just right'. We hear they do pizza and sourdough bread too.
G. D.
Beautiful little town... very interesting sites loved all the history.
Vanilla slice is to die for with A hot chocolate.. staff very friendly and polite.. lovely place to stop and enjoy.
Came back few days later and had pasties and vanilla slice. Really nice and pasties was hot.yum...
m. k.
A bit over priced. Found Banjo's better.
I had the lamb pie and at $9.50 i would expect it to be fantastic.
T. B.
Lovely person,,he was closed but let us in to get a coffee after a long drive from new norfolk to Launceston, great service will definitely call in there again.thank you.
L. M.
The famous Ross bakery from studio ghbli, not only that, the vanilla slice is to die for!
M. B.
Cute country town bakery! Steak pie and vanilla slice were delicious- they claim to have the best vanilla slice! I would definitely agree.
K.
Worth the small detour. Soup was good. Pastries were also not bad.
L. R.
Yummy scallop pie and the vanilla slice was great.
S. H.
Tried the famous vanilla slices, they are very crispy on top and bottom, but creamy inside. They are not overly sweet which is really nice for someone like myself who love deserts but doesn’t like too many sugars.
Next time I wish to try some other things like pies breads.
L. G.
Very cute bakery and amazing vanilla slice!
L. C.
Best Vanilla slice ever. Most buy
K. B.
Old world charm, reliably great coffee, tempting vanilla slices. Great to see they have a couple of gluten free options. The gf cheese and asparagus quiche was nice.
H. F.
An absolute must stop destination if you are traveling across the state! Such good food!!! We take the vanilla slices home for later aswel!! Wish I could give this place a higher rating!!
G. M.
Great local bakery with all the usual favourites, but of course the must-try food is their famous vanilla slice. There's also a great garden seating area outside which is perfect in good weather.
L. H.
Fabulous bakery. Best Vanilla Slice in Tassie.
R. J. T. E.
The food is delicious! A couple of good gluten free recipe options, but couldn’t guarantee safe for coeliac diet. Limited seating inside, so much nicer to either sit in the garden outside or takeaway for a picnic if weather allows.
N.
Dropped in to the Ross Bakery Cafe on the way back down to Hobart. Last time I was in Ross there was a crowd and so I passed. This time it was quiet and so got to enjoy the quietness and the great service. On leaving a bought one of their "world best vanilla slice" and I agree, it is the best.
T. C.
Don't stop at Campbell Town - turn off the highway & stop at the Ross Bakery instead, you wont regret it!
F. R.
Delicious, fresh and worth the visit every time. Good food selecction and nice service
N. S.
Best bakery I've been to lately. Had lamb and minted pea pie - lovely! Will stop on way back and get Cornish pasties and sausage rolls to take home. Good coffee too.
E. M.
Such a gorgeous cafe with a shady courtyard. We were allowed to have our dog sit with us outside. Very calm, quiet street (compared to busy Campbelltown). Delicious food- I had tomato soup with a sourdough roll, and a chai latte, and my partner had a flat white, a pepper meat pie, and a tomato, cheese and ham panini. No photos because we ate it too quickly! We will definitely come back here again.
Z. z.
They make a great Vanilla slice, all pies are kept in a fridge and heated up on purchase. The scallop pie was a bit of a let down today, not a lot of filling (sauce wise) and very dry pastry. Jalepeno sausage roll and Devils pie were great and the town itself is worth a drive through.
多.
Cute little place with friendly staffs!
Vanilla slice is good! Last time I had it 3 years ago, and I think now it’s getting better than last time i had! Crispy pastry with creamy vanilla filling( or called custard?), yummy!
Btw opening time on google map page shows close on wednesday, but they open on wednesday now!
R. M.
Superb local bakery. Traditional Eccles cakes and brilliant baked custard tart. You won't regret a cake an coffee here.
D. P.
Favourite place to visit on every trip to Hobart. Love driving through Richmond to experience the tree-lined street, convict built buildings and cottages. Ah, the serenity. And then back to the highway for the rest of the trip.
L. L.
Not usually a fan of vanilla slices but this was delicious! The cream was custardy, not overly sweet and the pastry was delightful. Would recommend!
J. M.
The coffee was great! The cake was okay
N. J.
Get a peppered steak pie! Enough said. Oh and the staff are somewhat fantastic. Lol.
i. i.
Lovely little bakery in a quaint little town. Love the building, pies were good. You'll recognise this spot if you're an anime fan, otherwise, take a moment to appreciate the building and the surrounding.
M. v. d. V.
Cute historic bakery, but both vanilla slice and scallop pie were average at best. Far from being "the best in the world" (not a chance in the world). Also small piece for what you pay.
N. Y.
The vanilla slices are good but I wouldn't say they're the best in the world. Service wasn't great when we were there... maybe an off day?
G. M.
The best pies and sausage rolls around. Lovely ambience
H. T.
The best vanilla cake. Even I am not vanilla lover but I wanna say it is really really best and amazing cake. This time I tried vanilla cake and scollop pie. Many scollops in the pie and the sauce was amazing. Good balance seasoning. Vanilla cake is really excellent. The puff pastry with creamy vanilla custard. Recommend to have tea or relax in here.
H. P.
A five star vanilla slice. Flaky pastry, real custard. Streets ahead of the mass produced slices with sickly sweet icing that you get at many bakeries. Also had a delicious pepper steak pie with nice and crunchy pastry and a good cup of espresso. The only bakery you should stop at when in Ross (and we tried both).
P. G.
I had a cornish pastie with delicious side salad and cappuccino. Nice day out, they have a good sunny outside garden area with amenities
樱.
Crowded maybe due to lunch crowd. Nice vanilla slice. Had curried scallops and devils of a pie. Had gluten free pies too - bacon and egg and asparagus. Topped it with blond chai latte. Came here coz a friend said it’s Japanese anime. No more!
s. h.
Love the scallop pie and the vanilla slice
C. K.
Historic building, friendly staff, and a very effective wood burner to deal with the winter chills. The bread is excellent, but none displayed for sale! Maybe you have to order in advance? Very limited indoor seating, which can be an issue in winter. We each had a large bowl of the vegetable soup, which was tasty, presented with excellent sourdough bread baked on the premises.
If travelling North, call here first, to avoid the queues in Campbell Town. Calling here when travelling South can result in your having to sit outside if it's busy, unless you're willing to try the cafe across the road, or you can turn around and go back to Campbell Town. There's are few places to eat close to the highway South of this place.
Ross itself has a historic vibe, and worth visiting, even if the bakery is closed.
N. B.
Great pies and all things baked. Love it.
B. K.
Awesome scallop pie and vanilla slice
A.
Absolutely amazing flaky scallop pie, hearty tomato soup and a delicious vanilla slice.
It is a hidden gem!!
R. B.
Great vanilla slice. The pasty on the pies was different than other bakeries. It still tasted good. Worth a visit.
H. C.
World greatest vanilla slice was awesome, the vanilla was sweet and soft, with the crunchy soft layer. Definitely must try if u are here. Secondly was the scallop curry pie. The curry wasn’t spicy but with the aroma herb mix with Tasmania fresh scallop, wrap with the multi layer bake skin. What a perfect combination. Last but not lease with the home made tomato vegetable soup with rich of tomato and vegetable. Finish with their home made bun. Enjoy the beautiful autumn view with those world class high tea.
L. S.
The vanilla slice is very popular here. Worth trying.
D. W.
Scallop pie heaven
In today’s lunch at the Ross Bakery, I found 7 scallops in my curried scallop pie.. Yum
Finished off with the “worlds greatest” vanilla slice and washed down with a strong long black. Can’t wait for the next trip
A. A.
Scallop pies are a work of genius and the service is excellent. We also got a chance to look at the beautiful wood oven still used today. The baker we spoke to was very informative and a top bloke...considering we were invading his work space. Great place. Would visit again.
H. B.
Very busy bakery filled with tourists, known for their Vanilla slices. This bakery is famous amongst Asian tourists because of its mention in Kiki’s Delivery Service (a Japanese anime). Line gets really long and out the door, service staff were friendly and helpful. Limited seating available, with additional tables at the courtyard next door. The vanilla slice was good, though not something I would eat again and again. We liked the pies a lot better!
J. W.
Very picturesque, quaint little bakery and inn. Wonderful selection of cakes, savoury treats and coffee.
Any Studio Ghibli fans will be interested to know that Miyazaki may have drawn inspiration from this place when creating Kiki's Delivery Service. Maybe, but who knows.
G. T.
Sad that it doesn't fully embrace the kikis delivery service vibe it used to. Just a normal bakery now imo :( but it is still a good bakery. Have to get the vanilla slice.
J. B.
I normally like to write long reviews but this just needs two words...... vanilla slice.
G. S.
Scallop pies are a nope from me. However..... the devil pie and jalapeno sausage roll, were superb!
S. J.
Beautiful little bakery to notch quality 😍😋 recommend
B. B.
Love this place BUT THE VANILLA SLICE IS HALF THE SIZE THEY WERE
K. S.
Delicious spinach and ricotta pastry - but the star of the show was the vanilla slice - the best in the world. Located in a small but beautiful town - worth a visit, perfect pit stop when you're on the road :)
B. M.
Wish I had gone here first, instead of Bakery 31 which had glowing reports about the scallop pie, I could have made it better myself. Ross Village bakery has the french vanilla slice is to literally die for, being a big fan I source wherever I'm heading & the sourdough rolls both of which I took with me were wonderful. Do yourself a favour, If you like quality then head for Ross Village Bakery first
P. P.
Hell of a pie is awesome!
Amazing pepper steak pie with a bacon quiche on top. What a meal!! Loved it
M.
The vanilla slice was nice. And pies wet pretty good too! Though the place got famous from the Anime, the standard of food is worth going back for. Went there twice in my Tasmania visit.
S. S.
Good range, yummy bakery food.
C. H.
We stopped here on a cold autumn day 18 yrs ago on our honeymoon and we were the only ones there at 10 am. Food and atmosphere was beautiful then, and still is now. Would have loved to show our kids the wood fire oven as we were shown, but the line was out the door. Best bakery in Australia.
C. H.
Awesome baked goods here.
D. B.
Excellent range of pies, rolls and salads. Plentiful cakes. Wood-fired ovens and home made bread. Award-winning vanilla slice. Large variety of tea, coffee and cold drinks. Nice inside tea room and outside garden eating area.
E. B. (.
Probably the best Vanilla slice and Scallop pie I've ever eaten. Came here as a big Ghibli fan and left a fan of the bakery and its yummy treats. Super cute location. Ross is a gorgeous town, will visit again.
D. T.
I loved this bakery, they were very helpful and it was good to be able to get a gluten free cake. Coffee was good and the lady allowed me into their kitchen to see and photograph the old oven that they still in used when she saw me spot it from the doorway. A really nice, warm, welcoming bakery 😊
C. C.
This bakery was bustling with lots of tourist. There is limited seating inside the bakery which was very cosy however plenty of seating out the front and on the side of the building, there is a side little courtyard you can eat in. They do have two dogs there but are very friendly. We tried their famous vanilla slice and it was delicious. We also had the lamb, mint and pea pie, which was yum and had a strong mint flavour, the lamb was tender and pastry was flakey. The staff seemed nice. The toilets are apparently the cleanest along the highway. Great spot to stop when driving from Launceston to Hobart.
S. D.
On a recent visit to Hobart, I stopped in Ross for a coffee & sausage roll. The long-black was reasonable with potential to be excellent ~ just needed more flavour; maybe complete extraction or less hot water. Sausage roll was a fine example of excellent baking. Really enjoyable. Customer service was professional, not friendly. Outside seating was available but not particularly comfortable.
T. C.
I have tasted 4 scallop curry pie in Tasmania during my first 10 day visit, and this is so far the best. If we aren't heading straight to the airport, we would have taken a few away for our breakfast!
Having the coffee break in the courtyard of this bakery was almost magical. The birds chirping away throughout the town with very little traffic on Monday noon.
K. R.
The pastry is amazing and the vanilla slice is OMG, nothing else comes close. The owners were very lovely and even gave a personal tour of the wood fired oven
S. P.
Great service, coffee and pastries.
D. B.
Thoroughly enjoyed the scallop pie. Quality. Coffee was good too, staff polite and nice little fireplace to top things off. Bravo Ross Bakery!
T. C.
We arrived at 5 and the bakery (the set up of a famous Japanese animation was based on this bakery) was closing. The boss is so nice that he let us in. Turn on the light. Even invited us to have a look of the legendary oven. Bought a yummy pastry.
Happy!!!
A. F.
Lots of people rate the vanilla slice highly, and rightly so. It is excellent. But don't forget the eccles! And pies. I had a fantastic steak and mushroom with an excellent side salad. Highly recommended. Warning: don't be fooled by the other bakery in the street. Make sure you come to the right one!
l. m.
Stop for pictures but make sure you eat something - the food is wonderful. I would 100% recommend the Cornish pastie and the lemon square. the vanilla slice is not too bad either. Just make sure you go to tot he right bakery - it is the one at the northern end of the street.
H. N.
Price is on the upper end since the place is very popular with tourists. The vanilla slide is tasty. Their toilet is at the back with entrance on the left. Parking is plenty. Staff is great
D. E.
Absolutely great. So busy. Second try we got a table. Food very tasty. Staff are friendly. We were relaxed able to chat and enjoy each other's company. Just like everyone was. Keep up the excellent work.
C. B.
Delicious scallop pies (we were sent here on recommendation!). Coffee was great as well.
S. S.
The reviews are spot on as this place serves amazing baked goods. A must try is the scallop pie. It is absurdly good. The staff were very friendly to us. Carl, the resident oven guy, invited us back to have a look at the 100+ year old stone oven. It was worth the drive.
A.
Warm fire, great coffee, pies, cakes...everything was YUM. Especially the BREAD which is baked directly on the bricks. Such an amazing woodfired oven. Over 160 years old and used daily for everything they bake including the pie fillings! No wonder it all tasted so good
M. P. (.
A great stop, well worth the visit. Fantastic veggie pasties, amazing bread, great slices, friendly staff and beautiful outdoor dining area.
A. B.
Tasty woodfired pies and pastries. Curried scallop and spinach ricotta were nice. Outdoor dining area is also nice and serene. Good selection of sweets and desserts. Definitely worth the detour to Ross of you are hungry and in the area.
b. l.
Great bakery, lovely staff.
a. d. l.
Wood oven pies and vanilla slice lived up to the expectations ! Also have vegetarian options like quiches and spinach and cheese rolls and a veggie soup (vegan). People were super nice despite being really busy ! Would drop back again anytime :)
S. L.
This lovely country bakery bakes all their bread in a wood fired oven. We stopped in for lunch and had wonderful meat and salad sandwiches made with chewy crusty sourdough bread fresh from the wood fired oven. We also tried a mars bar slice and an eccles cake! It was just delicious and the coffee was reasonable. The staff were really sweet too.
S. (.
Do the small detour and grab a pie and have a look around very worth it.
a.
Nice location, cute bakery/tea house, friendly staff. Expensive prices throughout the menu. My veg pastie had very little flavour, seemed as if it only had cheese and potato as a filling and at around $6 dollars I was a little disappointed. There's an extensive range of pastries to choose from so that's a plus.
Cheers
A. K.
Great setting in a gorgeous old building and with outside tables under a big old oak.
We didn't have a very pleasant experience though.
No prices are up so you don't know what stuff cost for take-aways.
The menu showed salad included then they charged extra for it.
Not friendly in handling complaints either.
The cafe a few doors to the right was a much more pleasant experience.
A. H.
Very original country bakery with wood fire oven. Beautiful pies of many varieties. Nice coffee, staff who go out of their way to help. The biggest vanilla slices I have ever seen and so delicious.
c. g.
Very popular place in Ross.
Great range of yummy pies.
Hot, fresh and yummy food. Salads, pies, sandwiches and tea and coffee options.
Very friendly and polite staff. Quick service.
Can be busy during lunch time.
Plenty of seating available. Inside and some outside.
Clean restroom available.
Great range of Tasmanian products available too.
a. m.
Highly recommended spot to drop into. Food was hot fresh and smelled amazing. Quaint cosy seating inside and some outside. Very popular at lunch time as there was a small queue to get served. My pie and pastie were really good.
V. H.
We love trying out pies at country town establishments and actually ordered 3 pies (scallop, beef, cornish pastie) between 2 people. We were impressed by all 3. This bakery has done a very good job of achieving a flakey pie crust, but their pies do have a finer flake texture compared to your typical pie. (Visit date: April 2019)
A. T. F. v. M.
Just yummmo. There's something about a country bakehouse that adds flavour to their cooking I reckon. Try the vanilla slices you wont regret it but the waist line will.
B. H. (.
Great sausage rolls. The brownies are nice too. Coffee was really nice as well. Well be back 😉 👉
B. N.
Ross Village Bakery was a nice stop for lunch serving pies and other bakery food. Scallop pie is popular as is the Vanilla slice (supposedly ‘worlds greatest’ but they are tasty and generous). Coffee not too bad.
There is a story about Miyazake getting inspiration for one of his anime stories here - apparently popular with Japanese fans though we didn’t see any. Worth looking into/investigating a bit more.
A. F.
OMG!! If your going here try the vanilla slice!! Best vanilla slice I have ever had.. the pies were delicious and so were the other slices you could get!!
Service was great, the staff were very informative and quick!
h. b.
The best vanilla slice in Tassie
J. M.
We came here after trying the other bakery in town as we were still hungry. This is definitely the one to come to, the pies were crunchy and fresh, the sandwiches were delicious and you can’t leave without getting the vanilla slice!
M. B.
Off road parking lovely tree lined street. Eating inside, covered area outside and area by road under trees. County style bakery with bread, pies, sweet cakes and vanilla slice quoted to be "The World's Greatest!" Scallop pie a must!
J. S.
Amazing food, and it truly does sell the world's best vanilla slice! Nat was very helpful and cheery would definitely be going back again soon!
T. S.
Situated on the Main St of Ross, the Ross bakery Inn, a heritage building from the early 1800's which was a horse drawn carriage Stop. Accommodation is still available, with breakfast, catering for backpackers through to families. Along side the Inn is the Ross Village Bakery. The word from the locals is, "You must try their Pizza's" baked every Sat evening from 6pm to 8pm. Our timing was lunch Sunday, where we enjoyed a fresh made scallop pie, acompanied by a good size colorful salad, delightful. Then Coffee with their Signature Vanilla Slice, mouth watering. The range of fresh prepared award winning breads, pies, quiche, rolls, cakes etc are all very tempting, which is the reason this bakery is so popular. We ate in their covered court yard garden, ideal for families, as a playground is provided at the rear. In the front of this significant historical building, an attractive, purpose built Al Fresco area, with inside dining and a takeaway. The service was excellent, friendly and professional. We must return for the Sat night Pizza.
K. k.
Lovely little bakery with fantastic staff. Feels a little like they're falling short on the Kiki link though. It was a bit disappointing that they didn't have any themed food options. I'm sure there are copyright issues, but they could make little witch hat, cat or broom shaped pastries! I'm probably just being picky because I lived in Japan and they do themed cafes so well.
B. D.
Amazing food here. Great scallop pie and great vanilla slice. Really friendly lovely service too! Will definitely be back.
m. k.
Best Cornish pasty I've had
M.
Scallop pies are the best ever. Most of the service was great. We sat down to eat and l went to the counter to order an additional pie and was told to get to the back of the line. I was abit disappointed in this response, thought it was a bit rude.
f. f.
I like the vanilla slice... you must try it when you go to Hobart. The vanilla slice is famous as World Greatest Vanilla Slice.
The shop was open from 1860. I accidentally read that Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese Animator got inspiration in here for anime movie Kiki's Delivery Service.
R. H.
Great bakery worth the stop.
S. H.
Small place, cozy, everything you want from a bakery in a small town. A place to fill your belly and warm your body. History an pop culture reference. A town in the middle of nowhere, yet known around the world. This is what I call stoic tour.
*bonus: Kiki Delivery Service
k. b.
Best Vanilla Slice ever!
K. H.
Charming bakery in a gorgeous little town. Lovely meat pies and their vanilla slice is indeed one of the best.
J. M.
Delicious vanilla slices. Highly recommend the lamb and mint pea pie.
N. W.
Vanilla slice is a must try. Good coffee, Wi-Fi and friendly service. Pies are tasty too. It's small but definitely worth it. The village looks like if it's from a storybook.
J. S.
Nice & crispy pastry for vanilla slice, vanilla custard is ok, so VS is ok overall. but tried vegi pie, no taste, VP is not nice. Coffee was good, though.
A.
Yes the owner is very friendly and even show us the oven, beautiful vanilla slice highly recommended
C. S.
Lovely tomato and veggie soup and a extremely nice sour dough roll... very hearty meal
P. L.
They say it’s the worlds best vanilla slice. It’s hard to argue. Good value for money, this is huge. And tastes quite great.
E. H.
Stopped here on a drive between launceston and Hobart, fantastic steak pie. Great service and lovely area to visit
C. D.
We only purchased a bottle of water and a banbury, but this would be a great place for lunch or afternoon tea. The spacious dining area is not obvious when you first walk in.
J. D.
Really nice bakery with excellent staff. A great visit if you are a fan of Kiki's Delivery Service! Lemon squares are so good!
C. F.
Nice outdoor garden seating area to enjoy a creamy Vanilla Slice and a Devil Pie. If your still hungry, try the prize winning sausage roll......and get a another Vanilla Slice for takeaway.
M. F.
Quait little bakery. Devil's pie was nice but I'll go for something without egg if I go again.
Was great to be offered to see inside the massive wood fired kiln. Upto 300 loaves of bread fit in there. There's not that many people living in the town!
S.
We were looking for nice place to have breakfast and apparently this place offers the best vanilla slice. We tried the best stuff back in Europe. Hungarians call it Krémes, Bosnians and Serbians call it Krempita, Germans call it Cremeschnitte, I've tried the best ones made by Hungarians. Ross bakery is good enough for a breakfast but they take it a bit too far to call things "the best". Basically its full of asian tourists so you will be lucky to find a seat as they come in buses. Ross has a few more places to offer. we walked into the very next café and it was empty. The buses must have an agreement with the bakery. ;) it appears the other businesses just pick up the crumbs. While you are there check out the holden garage (cash only) and wool museum down the road.
B. B.
Country hospitality, wood-fired bakery, dined in the lounge beside an open fire on locally baked and reheated bread rolls (letting the bread rest is a must) with Tasmanian cheeses, local wine, locally baked pizza followed by coffee & port that we helped ourselves to. Chatting and sharing with fellow travellers enjoying the informal setting as friends of the family... - Creaking floors, steep stairs to the en-suite bedroom and the freight train passing late in the night wailing as it passed the level crossings. Wonderful atmosphere, very tempting to relocate to this rural retreat about an hour from Hobart... Great for a weekend break...
T. R.
Best vanilla slices
M. L.
Great place to stop between Launceston/Devenport to Hobart. Lovely sandwiches and amazing vanilla slice and pecan tart. A little pricey (coffee is $4.50 or $5+ for large) but lovely service.
A. R.
Amazing vanilla slice. Pie crust was beautifully flaky.
b. m.
Wonderful pies and tarts and cakes. Pleasant surroundings and good service
J. C.
Not what we expected and won't be returning
L. C.
It's rumoured this bakery does the best vanilla slice and at least from the vanilla slices I've had it definitely was amazing!
D. W.
Food pretty good, pity the tattooed lady at counter wasn't the friendliest.
T. K.
This place has the best vanilla slice that you will ever find.
A. J.
A wide variety for a relatively small bakery. We stopped in during a busy period and found the staff to be most efficient. Coffee was great and food was quality.
P. S.
Lovely scallop pie. Vanilla slice half as big as a house brick - very nice, small chai latte - very good. Groan ..... Need to lie down !
L. K.
Quality vanilla slice: yes. Nice coffee and other things like bread, smoothies: yes. If you're in town, totally worth a visit.
S. N.
Worlds best vanilla slice... and of course a real bakery tasmanian scallop pie. Situated at Ross between Launcestom and Hobart just 5 minutes off the main road
M. T.
Don't get me wrong - Ross Bakery do have great food - however their service is appalling. Ross is a tiny town between Hobart and Launceston and the main reason you'd stop is for a vanilla slice and epic sausage roll.
T. S.
Good pies and cakes. Everybody working there is happy and friendly. Makes what they're selling taste even better. Nice coffee too.
D. B.
Famous for their Vanilla Slices and possibly the oldest wood fired bread oven still in use in Australia. Also a pilgrimage stop for Japanese fans of Anime because of an uncanny resemblance to Kiki's Bakery in the feature length cartoon movie about the little witch and her Home Delivery service.
S. Z.
The vanilla slice is the world’s best slice I’ve ever eaten. In addition, the black tea is worthy to order with soy milk.
S.
Scallop pie was nice
h. c.
Great to break the drive between Hobart and Launceston. Even better if you have some Kiki fans in the car. They were even happy to show us Kiki's attic room at the back.
G. W.
The History is interesting, and the Tasmanian Wool Centre in Church Street is of good value for it's exhibits and also a video (that seems to run continually) which gives a good description of some pioneers, homesteads, past establishments, buildings, etc. Allow an hour or two to soak it all in.
E. H.
The claim is best vanilla slice and I do believe it! Friendly staff and tasty treats. A very quaint and historic building.
L. W.
Very friendly staff, delicious coffee and the vanilla slice is as good as everyone says! Definately worth stopping here on your way through.
S. D.
You guys need to stop for "Vanilla
Slice" from them. 😘😘😘
R. M.
The original and best! Grab a curried scallop pie, a coffee, and a big ol' slice of the world's greatest vanilla slice!
J. M.
Great coffee, good selection of fresh cakes, pies & bakery items. Cosy and clean.
L. A.

Just came here in July, found out they were closed until August because they've gone skiing! Was really looking forward to those vanilla slices...
T. P.
Vanilla slice, sourdough bread, pastie, all yummo. But all out of my favourite steak and bacon pie. Oh well.
B. N.
Lovely coffee and purchased a very appetising looking Cornish pastie to enjoy for lunch. Great staff.
B. S.
Had breakfast here today, great place for a quick stop. Did also grab a vanilla slice!
S.
Delicious bakery by night and scrumptious woodfired pizza by night!
We'll be back again for sure!
I. S.
Cute little place with decent history behind. Nice staff but the food is rather average. The oven is remarkable!
B. M.
Can not go past the area without a Scollop Pie & vanilla slice. We enjoyed both. A very friendly lady behind the counter.
G. E.

The building and outdoor area needs a lot of TLC to return it to how loved and cared for it was when I was growing up. The coffee is terrible.
c. s.
This bakery is excellent, the vanilla slice to die for. Please take the time to come down to Ross, this bakery is worth it alone.
