Comments of N.Lee Bakery
F. 2. F. L.
I read a lot of great reviews about this place before visiting and I'm going to add to that collection!!!. I visited on a Sunday lunch time and had the BBQ chicken on a wholemeal roll with extra coriander. OMG it was packed with flavour and filling and all for a bargain $6.50!!! I have to say this is one of the best cheap eats around inner city Melbourne so head on down and try it out for yourself. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
S. C.
Great banh mi’s here. Ordered the crispy pork banh mi and a meat pie for a friend. Bread was soft on inside and crunchy on outside, and generous with the crispy pork. Only issue I had here was it was on the little expensive side for a banh mi ($9.30). Accepts EFTPOS which is handy!
Highly recommend going to Peel Street Park and eating there out in the sun.
B. T.
N. Lee banh mi lives up the hype for being one of the best in Melbourne and most accessible for those living in the inner city. Not all fillings are created equal with the best flavour to try is the chicken and pork combo. Whipped Mayo is the binding spread here which I gladly welcomed.
Drinks on the otherhand were average and slightly subpar with a dearer price tag if you're going for Vietnamese coffee/drinks.
Service is as expected and they're a lovely shopfront and I recommend this place and the options yoy can get.
E. T.
Alright I'm going to say it. This was the best Bánh mì I have ever had. Was the crispy pork and I loved it!
Fresh bread, meat cooked to perfection, ratio of the ingredients on point. Not a dull bite! Thoroughly enjoyed!!
Will be back for more.
D. C.
Ordered the schnitzel banh mi . Fresh and Delicious. Definitely worth a visit !
G. S.
Hands down the best Bahn mi I have eaten in Melbourne. Well worth riding out of my way to get them. I may have found my sunday morning ritual.
You can ask for different levels of chilli from no chilli to extra chilli. Beware of the chilli level since they are actually spicy. I like them with extra chilli but I like burning my tongue off occasionally. YMMV.
L.
Best vegan tofu Bahn mi. Get fresh chilli on it.
P. H.
Pate is so creamy here, and generous fillings in general for their banh mi
J. V.
This place seems to always busy so we had to give it a try and it was worth it. It takes about 5mins to get the food when they are semi busy (about 10 people in the store/sitting down outside total). The grilled pork and the pork belly rolls were super tasty, be warned, if you ask for chilli it can be slightly spicy. The spring rolls were quite long and we're also super tasty. Definitely recommend!
G. L.
A gem of a find in Fitzroy, and with streams of regular folk lining up to get their banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) fix, one couldn't be wrong. I love how one can customise the fillings and toppings, it's just like a Subway for banh mi! It's stuffed to the max that just makes it feel oh-so-yummilicious! Every bite gives the satisfying crunch from the freshly toasted baguette, and oozing tasty blend of one's choice of savoury fillings!

I was strolling around in Fitzroy-Collingwood area enjoying the weather when I found this cozy bakery cafe full of locals. One of the workers recommended me 'Crispy Pork Belly Banh Mi' so I decided to give that a go. I was first surprised by the generous portion of meat inside the fresh baguette. Pork Belly was crispy but slightly dry on the outside. Regardless, it was soft, fatty and juicy inside! I also liked how it was filled with fresh veggies with lots of chili and coriander - just perfect! :) Overall, it sure was delicious but nothing outstandingly special. Worth a visit only if you are in the area👌
C. N.
Best Vietnamese Banh Mi in the neighbourhood. Crunchy carrot, fresh cucumber, yummy handmade Vietnamese Butter sauces with dinky di grilled pork, crispy pork, meat ball or mixed ham flavours. Don't forget to order a Vietnamese Coffee!
D. C.
This is the best place in Melbourne to get a good Bahn Mi (Vietnamese Roll). I personally recommend grilled pork or BBQ pork/pork crackling, but if you are looking for something a little more halal, then the chicken is great too. They make their own bread on-site and free ingredients are always fresh. The prices are reasonable.
M. Y.
Safe to say this is one of my favourite Bánh Mì shop in Melbourne and with that crazy high score, a lot of other people's also.
Been here quite a few times and the rolls are consistently fresh and tasty, with generous portions of filling.
Add Fresh Chilli, for that sugar on top.
N. Lee, you so fine.
J. D.
Great place. I had tofu banh mi (Vietnamese salad roll) and it was sensational. Brilliant chilli. So tasty.
The line was out the door when I arrived. This place is clearly popular but the wait was not too long. Banh mi is $6-7, incredible value. You line up to order then wait off to the side, a good system.
It is cash only.
S. P. J. C.
Best Vietnamese buns so far in town. Always line up. Plus they open at early good to grab one after long night shift.
J. M.
That was one darn tasty pork banh mi. Fresh bread, fresh ingredients and pâté on point.
C. T.
Best banh mi in the area, and maybe in all of Melbourne.
Pretty good ordering system too, you never have to wait long.
Try the vanilla slice.
J. G.
Not bad but definitely not the best Banh Mi in Melbourne.. it is a standard Banh Mi
A. S.
The team are super friendly and remember regular faces. It is a small but very busy bakery and at peak times there is a line snaked outside on to the footpath for the (arguably) the best Banh Mi in Melbourne.
The crackling pork or plain pork are extremely popular but my personal favourite is Tofu! You can customise your Banh Mi if you don't eat fish (no pate) dairy (no homemade butter) or if you are part of the "I hate coriander" movement? No coriander, no problems. If you like a bit of kick you can add chili. Yummo.
As a bakery they also have fresh bread and a small selection of sweet treats (eg. Lamingtons, custard tarts and Nutella donuts), hot pies but also made to order sandwiches and rice paper rolls.
Z. L. (.
Pork belly bahn mi is quite good. The meat is tender and juicy. Service is nice as well. They gave a genius explanation about every fillings in the bahn mi. Will try the tofu bahn mi next time :)
N. G.
It's a tiny take away shop, slightly larger than a hole in a wall. Had the Pork belly Bahn mi and a latte. The latte was strong, hot without a hint of burnt grains, very good well in line with Melbourne standards. The Bahn mi was also excellent. The pork belly was tender and juicy and full of flavour. The crackling is delicious and crispy offering a trademark crack and crunch. Full of strong savoury and umami notes. The rest of the filling is sharp and fresh adding texture to the roll. Comes with a healthy serving of coriander, so coriander haters beware. Also reasonably priced considering the standard they are achieving. The only thing that could be improved is maybe a tiny bit more crackling but that is maybe bordering on a bit indulgent.
A.
Crispy pork bank mi was just ok; 5/10 as Melbourne banh mis go. There were bones in the pork and the crackling was very soggy and not crispy. The pickled carrot and daikon wasn’t pickled enough so it was overall lacking flavour. And the bread was fresh but not crusty on the outside. If you’re after a banh mi on smith st there are far better options. However they are very efficient and clean.
C. T.
Good banh mi. Not the best. Could do with more fillings. But their bread is very very good. I love the small dinner rolls. Perfection! Quick service.
M. H.
Best freshly made rolls in Melbourne . and cheap. Love it .
R. K.
One of the best banh mi bakeries in Melbourne hands down! There's always a queue around lunchtime that stretches out the door past the next shop so try and avoid if you can but it's worth the wait!
K. R.
Yum! Pork crackling bahn mi was delicious. Do expect a wait of about 15-20mins at peak lunch time!
C. C.
Their tofu banh mi is THE BEST. And their rolls are so soft and delicious. They have fast service, great food and really good prices. Can you beat $5 for a sandwhich? It's my go-to quick and delicious lunch spot with lots of variety. Don't let the line scare you off, it is totally worth it!
Z. L.
Sensational Bahn mi served up here. Been coming here for 25 years and never been dissatisfied. Best in Melbourne. High praise and thanks to you all.
J. W.
Italians will swear their pizza is better back home, and the same can unfortunately be said for the Vietnamese food sold here.
The rolls are not stuffed properly, not toasted unless requested (Which is actually a standard back in their own country) and usually missing items or not containing enough.
Customers (who do indeed line up for this food) are predominantly white and are unaware that they are being ripped off, as this is a common trend amongst some Vietnamese restaurants that serve to non-Vietnamese.
Frontline staff have variable English speaking/listening capabilities leading to some mistakes, while overall staff performance is generally good.
If you are in the area and hungry, this place is acceptable, but I would not recommend going out of your way to purchase food here.
D. S.
Do love these simple bakeries which are in three locations around Melbourne. This one today is in Smith Street, Collingwood. I can always tell by the queues that they are popular and gets extremely busy during lunch hour.
I had a crispy pork belly banh mi which was awesome with generous portion size. Under $10 with a drink.
This is mostly for takeaway although there are some tables outside.
I'm told the Vietnamese rolls are good so will try them next time.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Pram/stroller friendly. Parking - well it's Smith Street so watch out for vigilant parking inspectors.
M. R.
Bahn mi yes please, delicious!
J.
Delicious traditional Banh Mi with great friendly service
B. S.
Hands down the best Bahn mi I've ever had! The Vietnamese iced coffee is great too!
W. W.
Meat Ball with Chilli is fantastic! Pork liver paste and meet ball are delicious.
B. S.
The best food. Get there early to avoid the queue
E. Y.
The bread is great but there could be more filling in their banh mi.
S. H. k.
So far second best!
Full of fillings with decent flavour in traditional Vietnamese way. And that make the breadroll taste better than most of banh mi places!
My friend delivered the roll so when I was eating it was not super freshly made, but still tasted amazingly good!
Loved it.
These days I’m fixed on banh mi and I’m traveling all the way to find the best placeX)
J. O.
The best tofu banh mi I’ve had in Melbourne. Fresh, great tofu, and awesome soft bread.
B. P.
Never understood why SYDNEY can sell a banh mi for $3 yet in Melbourne they are $6 but if you have to have one head down to Smith St Collingwood and try either n lee or just down the road a grilled pork banh mi at Sonny’s, both delicious with fantastic soft but crunchy baguettes
F. A.
My job takes me to every suburb of Melbourne and nobody comes close to this guy's Pork rolls. Here is why: fresh rolls baked every 50 minutes; French style lard butter and Pate'; generous servings and finally the killer cheap price. There is a very good reason the line outside this place can be twenty people long but you are happy to wait- every dam week day.
B. L.
Amazing food! Highly recommend
A. M.
The best banh mi I've had outside of Vietnam. The bread is so fresh, and the pork belly and crackling roll is out of this world!
S. W.
The best banh mi I've had in many many years. Perfect ratio and bread!!
P.
Great banh mi, meat pies, cakes, Vietnamese coffee and pastries. The staff are extremely friendly, especially Aunty! N Lee Bakery serves the culturally diverse and renowned for their fast and friendly service. Will return in my Arab garb again.
D. G.
The best donuts! The best in Melbourne!
.... and focaccia.
B. M.
Ive had pork rolls all over melbourne and this is the BEST pork rolls in Melbourne period!
A. d.
They do a great job.
They do get very busy and produce great quality service and food, pies, cakes, drinks, bread, outdoor tables that are undercover wheelchair accessible entrance to the bakery, during Monday to Friday if possible try and avoid their lunch rush however that's not to say don't go as they do a magnificent job at keeping up without compromise of quality. Smith Street Collingwood opposite the ANZ bank.
B.
Love their Traditional pork rolls. Authentic and the bread is amazing, Crispy, soft and moist inside. Affordable and great place to have lunch. Will always try to come here when im in the area.
B. R.
Got an excellent banh mi Vietnamese sandwich here. They make them right in front of you. Very fresh very tasty. They also have regular pies, sausage rolls and bread rolls all made in house
O. H.
This place it amazing. The veggies are fresh, the bread is nice and crispy, the staff are super friendly even though they don't stop serving, and it's all so cheap too.
I get lunch from here 1-2 times a week, it's that good.
K. P.
Best Vietnamese baguettes in Melbourne! I've tried many many around. Been coming here since 2001!!!! The nicest people here too!
L. M.
Amazing grilled pork Vietnam else roll.. I don't know what they do to the rolls, they're crunchy but soft in the middle. SO GOOD!
All for only $4.5! You can't go wrong.
P. K.
These are the very best fresh rolls in Melbourne. The variety is huge, staff are really friendly. You would be hard pressed to find a busier bakery/ sandwich store in Melbourne at lunchtime. There is s line usually outside the store. If you are a fan of N. Tran bakery in prahran you will love this.
Π. Κ.
Really nice breakfast and a clean shop..
F. M.
Best Vietnamese rolls in town
S. D.
Best bahn mi in Melbourne! Grilled pork roll is #1, it's a Smith Street institution.
A. M.
Fast, cheap and oh so fresh. N Lee is my regular weekday, healthy 'cheaper than eating in' lunch. Really friendly staff, super fast service and delicious rolls. Try them with Chili and coriander...go on I dare you.
J. P.
Best Banh Mi on Smith St and less than $7 unless you want pork belly. Grilled pork with chilli is the goer 👌
S. C.
Excellent and authentic Vietnamese pork rolls (banh mi). Bread was very soft and fresh, pâté was delicious too.
L.
Always delicious banh mi with fast service. However prices have been rising and rising and now a crackling pork banh mi cost over 7 dollars now.
R. V.
Have heaps of options for traditional banh mi thits. The crackling pork roll is the best! Tastes amazing and very cheap.
S. E.
Usually a queue. Best grilled pork rolls around, however the volume of filling varies greatly depending on which staff member serves you.
A. L.
Possibly the best banh mi I've had. Fresh and great value!
R. R.
Best Vietnamese rolls in Melbourne.

A. S.
Almost as good had Hong ha in Sydney best pork rolls in Melbourne I’ve found cheap too
B. C.
Great rolls - the banh mi is hit and miss - but this is a vietnamese bakery - you shouldn't expect gold star service. If you do, maybe go back to prahran.
E. W.
Best Banh Mi I've had in Melbourne, go here every time I'm in Collingwood
S. G.
Rolls are second to none. Fresh bread, crisp then soft- but not chewy. Not a heavy hitter if you're on a budget.
S. S.
The best Vietnamese bbq pork roll I have ever devoured. Thwre's always a queue at lunchtime.
G. P.
Excellent food. Don't worry about the queue, they are very efficient
M. W.

Can't go past it for a pork roll.
The queue usually goes all the way to docklands, but somehow you still get your food pretty quick.
C. T.

Banh mi, Vietnamese iced coffee... Both are great here. Ordering was easy and generally not too long a wait if you get in early or around off-peak times. They are very popular though, so there's usually a line most of the time but don't be put off by it - the line progresses quickly.
