Comments of To Be Frank Bakery

This beautiful boutique little bakery is just off the main streets and ticked away. The food, pastries and bread here are amazing! Well through out with their flavour combinations and great variety that will suit most. Sweet, savoury, spicy, and also normal bread on offer. Service here is calm and friendly. Coffee is the only downside here, as it's not good and you'd get much better at any of the cafes in a stone's throw. But the food is that good it still get 5 stars. Treat yourself and try the cheese twist here or the four cheese toastie!

To Be Frank is a bakery that offers a wide selection of pastries - from savoury to sweet, to aromatic and freshly baked loaves of bread. The smell that blows onto the face as you open the door is unexplainable.
Always baking new goods, this bakery will keep me coming back for more.

Almond croissants that are possibly the best in the world.
Too many artisan bakeries these days are all about the aesthetics and the art, and not really on the food. This is NOT one of them.
Everything we’ve tried has been tip top. Absolutely amazing. The plum danish, eggplant something, sultana snails, the coffee too.
Pet friendly outdoor seating, the only thing I’d like more of would be indoor seats. Will be my go to for them almond croissants.
Keep up the great work team!

A bakery, popular with the locals, offering the usual and Argentinian pastries.
I wanted to try some Argentinian style pastries. The pastries are crisp and dry, not very buttery and filled with dulce leche - a caramel usually made from heated milk and sugar or sweetened condense milk - it is not too sweet (to me) and has a thicker, more luxurious texture than ones make from sugar.

Great friendly service and delicious bread and pastries. This bakery has the best cookies in Melbourne. I’ve been here a few times and there is always a wide selection to choose from. I have recommended this bakery to friends and family.

My favorite bakery in Melbourne. Wait! My fav in Australia! Pastries and bread is delicious and top quality. Service is friendly and I love the ambient. Oh and pet friendly too! Always a pleasure to visit, sit and enjoy.

came by for the TBF x Kennylover croissant ice creams and they were absolutely fantastic. I've had the pastries from To Be Frank in the past as well and they have consistently been excellent!

To Be Frank 🥐☕️
- Almond Croissant $7.5
- Italian Chorizo and Pecorino Scroll $6
- Croissant $5
- Pain Au Chocolat $5.5
I have been searching for good croissants in Melbourne and this bakery is defs one of my fav. I cannot fault any of their pastries. The almond croissant was incredible! It was so flakey with the perfect amount of sweetness. Grab a coffee and almond croissant and it will make ur day! The chorizo and pecorino scroll was a big surprise. It was a fancy ham and cheese scroll with a spicy kick 🌶

I think this cafe have one of the best or the best almond croissant in Melbourne, the coffee was very good also.
G. Y.
Friendly staff, with a great selection of freshly baked bread/pastries that keep you coming back for more!
T. B.
Only went in for a coffee but came out with sooo much more, their cakes look irresistible and the taste matches their looks! Actually really loved the Chocolate Smile which I’ve never seen before (typically just get chocolate croissants), I’m now converted.
F. F.
Learnt our lesson to get in early before they sell out for the day - no surprises why they do. Upon recommendation, we ordered the zucchini focaccia and it did not disappoint. Overall; high quality, so much attention to detail, and great value 👌🏾
*Edit: Went again a couple weeks after the first review, and once again, blown away at how amazing all the sweet & savoury options are - another 5 stars! The tart and capsicum scrolls are must orders, as is the pain au chocolat.
M. Y.
You truly have to be an early bird to get an Almond Croissant, otherwise you're left with the plain variety.
The assortment of bakes goods is moreishly delectable.
S. L.
Excellent products.
Good service.
Coffee was strong and aromatic.
Love the savory scroll.
Y. P.
One of the best bread in Fitzroy! You can trust this place! Never disappointed! I wanna try all menu! Staff are very friendly and nice atmosphere!
J.
beautiful bread, love the pastries. Have a try to the sweet caramelized onion rye bread it is so good !! Very relaxing place for a coffee. Definitely recommend it. If you intend to stop by for a take away coffee don't forget to bring your own cup. I will be back 😊
M. D.
One of the best bakeries in Melbourne (if not the best) hands down. We first tried some of their savoury options for lunch and went back a second time because it was SO GOOD! Tried their spelt flour chocolate cookie on a whim and this was the best cookie I had ever had in my life, and nothing will ever beat it. We also had 4 of their potato & fontina pastry between the two of us. Highly recommended this bakery that's also serving up some delicious coffee 🤤☺️ well done to the lovely staff and expertly crafted breads and pastries available. WILL BE BACK!!!
A. K.
We went there with expectation, but wow! Best bread I've ever had. Love the savoury pastry options for non sweet tooth! We had blue cheese fougassa, escargot, fruit loaf, and country loaf. I don't know what ingredients they put inside but it smells wonderful. Coffee is not bad.
M.
Really love their rye sourdough. Almond croissant was not my favourite, although I see that other people rate it highly, so it may just be a preference. Keen to return to try their other breads.
W. L. N.
Buttery croissant crispy on the outside. Yum!
A. P.
The line moved fast and everyone seemed really cheerful (staff and patrons alike). The blueberry tart and croissant were both delicious!

Breads are very nice with interesting options (5*), but wasn't impressed with the pastries (3*). Both almond croissant and some bread with pear were really average and not worth the price tag.
i. i.
This is my secret spot for my favourite pastry, not mentioning that pastry cos I'm not sharing. HOWEVER, please do visit the bakery for other heavenly goodness! I buy so much I might as well just have a pastry subscription!
E. B.
Delicious tahini scrolls !
S. C.
Creamy coffee and great sweet and savoury artisan bakery. Top notch and friendly staff , highly recommend
J. H.
We bought a range of pastries, rolls and a baguette along with Coffee for a family breakfast. For savory we had the cheese and rosemary croissant and ham and cheese sticks. These were great. We had the fruit and rhubarb danish which were excellent with nice crisp pastry. The baguette was unusual in a wholemeal bread in having soft and chewy inside with a great crisp crust. Rolls were also wonderful. Coffee was also good.
J. T.
Woke up early to make sure i get to buy the Almond Croissant. Been going around testing Melb Almond croissants. So far, To Be Frank is the best! The fillings they put inside is soooo delicious! Will definitely come for more. See you guys soon!
C. B.
Lovely little bakery/cafe, tucked away from the Smith St. crowds. Great service, ambiance, and delicious food.
C. P.
The best bakery around. For a French girl like me, I can't describe the happiness of finding such delicious bread and pastries in Melbourne
N. T.
Inspired pastries that you won’t find elsewhere. Love love love the eggplant tahini swirl and how every time we come in there’s something different. Highly recommend the Turkish bread and focaccia sandwich you can’t go past a classic toastie
W. Y.
My favourite bakery in Melb! The rosemary focaccia is dangerously delicious.
S. R. R.
Great selection of bread, treat and savoury items to enjoy on the spot or later. Love this place even if far from home.
H. R. S.
Honestly the best almond croissant I have had in my life. Perfectly crispy outside, soft fluffy inside and a very generous amount of almond cream. Delectable. Franco and his team know their craft well!
R. P.
I'm very lucky to have this place close to home during lockdowns, excellent quality food, super friendly and attentive staff.
My favorite bakery by far :D
R. C.
Super friendly people. Everything made fresh every morning. Pastry is delicious!
Highly recommended.
S. L.
I eat so many chocolate croissants that I am about to turn into a massive chocolate croissant, and I can say that of all the chocolate croissants I’ve tried, To Be Frank’s are most definitely the best.
A. O.
Loved it from the minute I walked it.
Hidden in a backstreet, lovely open light space, very friendly staff & omg the options there are great!
Very different combination of flavours to what we get from other places. We had 4 pastries and one wholegrain rye bread.
All delicious! However THANK YOU for creating a chocolate & almond croissant combo. It’s the best!!!
G. P.
The bread is next level here. Very nice vibes, delicious coffee and if you get in early you can be hypnotised watching all the bread get made. I’ll be back.
T. S.
So much delicious bread. Friendly staff who explained everything and made me want to buy it all. Delicious on all levels. The sea salt foccacia is only made on weekends - must have.
J. B.
Definitely a favourite of mine.
Make wonderful foccacia, Turkish bread and pastries and more
M. C.
The best ham and cheese toasted sandwich I have ever had!
R. “. F. o. G. J.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! amazing baked goods, at good prices and great coffee. Lots of baked goods you don't find at every bakery too!
L.
Love the vegan chocolate smile. It’s sourdough and not too sweet.
T. B.
Awesome bakery, lovely people. We’ve made this bakery part of our weekend routine as it’s one of the best around. The bread has a great crust and is light and fluffy while still having a bit of density. We took a bunch of the pastries to an event and everyone loved them.
The atmosphere matches the baked goods too. It’s a huge open space which feels cosy and bright. You can see the bread being baked right in front of you and Franco (the head baker) is always happy to have a quick chat. The staff is wonderful and prices are reasonable.
Would highly recommend To Be Frank Bakery.
J. L.
Best bakery in melbourne hands down. Best Croissants this side of paris.
T. K.
Excellent, interesting breads for those sick of white bread. Also other treats and snacks too.
W. A.
This bakery is located in a small street parallel to Smith and so a little tricky to find but it is well worth seeking out.
The shop looks like a shell for a garage and has that open look that is so popular these days i.e the oven in full view.
The product that comes out of that oven is superb. I had a cheese and vegemite scroll which was moist and flavorsome in fact everything that comes from that oven is great. Highly recommend.
G. W.
Tried a sweet AND a savoury treat and holy heck I was pleased on both spectrums. The eggplant tahini scroll was so soft and salty and delicious and the cinnamon coconut scroll was equally as yum.
I. S.
To be Frank is more than a place to have coffee, it is a unique place in terms of style, pastry and attention.
Attended by its own owners, this place offers an exquisite and greets pastry option.
Made with show cooking, it offers the possibility of enjoying a great variety of Argentine breads, sandwiches and specialties. A highly recommended place, especially if you are looking to maintain a healthy diet
G. C.
The Panettone is a revelation. The texture was so beautiful and moist and encapsulated all of the flavours of the classic Italian Christmas cake. Delicious! Would definitely recommend.

Knowledge, passion, simplicity and great attitude. That's how To Be Frank Bakery can be describe. If you are looking for a healthy and tasty loaf of bread, this is the place to be.
Well done Frank and Lau and all the TBFB team!
R. G.
Hands down the best bakery in Melbourne. Consistently amazing quality, friendly and helpful staff, and a wonderful selection of delicious baked goods.
G. L.
Probably my favorite bakery in town. Always positively surprise me with yummy pastries!
F. S.
Fantastic bread - almost a religious experience. An excellent and wide variety of unusual and delicious varieties from choose from.
M. B.
The only bakery we buy our bread. Our go to is the tin loaf rye sourdough. Pastries are delicious. The staff are welcoming. Great coffee.
C. N.
While you wait for your coffee to be made, you can get a glimpse of the great process and love involved in the confection of breads and pastries. And if you are lucky enough, you can even get the chance to have a chat with Franco, the head baker. The bakery itself it's a chill and open space, to relax and lay back on weekend mornings. Every time I visit, I can really feel the vibe, energy and detail this lovely couple invest every day in their creations.
Best part? This is still a hidden jem! So be quick in the morning to get those delicious caramel-filled argie pastries <3
q. b.
What a cosy and relaxing bakery.
Great coffee and service. The bread there is just the softest and made from the best quality ingredients. It keeps for days and is very tasty. Would definitely recommend.
M.
Best bakery in Melbourne. Amazing bread and lovely people. Ciabatta, focaccia, fruit loaf and rye bread. Every single bread and pastry are wonderful. They sell olive oil as well and they use this for some breads.
D. L.
I found this place by accident while avoiding the crowded Smith St and stopped by for a coffee and toasted sandwich, both of which were excellent - simple, but made with high quality ingredients. The place has a semi-industrial vibe and you watch the baker in action from where you sit. All the staff are very friendly. I'll definitely be back for the dulce de leche pastries, which appeared to be in high demand.
M. M.
Wow 👌
I love their 🥪 and breads all fresh and delicious
E. N. S. (.
Delicious products, and their star pastry must be the Argentinian with dulce de leche 😍 You will not find this excellence anywhere else!
Best of all is that they run this business with a focus on sustainability, and you will be serviced by caring fellas who provide quality using healthy flours.
Their coffee is great too. Bring your cup or borrow one from GreenCaffeen in their store! ☕️
S. B.

We got the 100% rye out of the oven this morning, it’s too early to try it but I can’t resist the smell of it. Once it cooled down i could finally try a proper piece, it was delicious, so good. The texture is fabulous. Reminds me of European rye.
Cosy, warm service.
S. S.
This is a lovely spot. The bread is really special, and the pastries are also good. Best of all, the people who run the place are utterly charming.
A. T.
Delicious coffee and croissant, highly recommend you check it out! a easy secret nook off Johnston st- ofrwn has a line and smells devine
J. C.
The crust on the country loaf is amazing maybe the best i have ever had but in saying that the inside was disappointing with so many big holes you can't do anything with it other than it plain or with butter
J. C.
Exceptional in every way. I’ve tried so many breads and pastries here and they are to die for. Service is always great. Go in early to skip the line.
