Comments of Black Cockatoo Bakery
W. T.
Finally after trying out all the bakeries commonly listed as the best in Sydney and more, I’ve found a bakery with croissants that rival Penny Fours! The croissants are amazing here. Penny Fours is only slightly better. Will definitely visit every time I’m in the area. The coffee is great here too which I was a bit surprised about because whenever I order coffee at bakeries, it’s disappointing.
l. l.
Nice crispy exterior, soft and fluffy interior just like my husband’s personality. Would definitely recommend the pistachio and chocolate snail!
M. L.
Absolutely amazing pastries and the sour dough is the best that I have ever eaten, and I have eaten a few! The service is second to none. I am happy that I am now E a local so that I can enjoy their delights every week ☺️

Is it possible to have a religious experience at a bakery? YES!!!
Simply an amazing bakery, the simple, focused approach to providing quality bread and baked goods is undeniable.
This has been a highlight of our trip!
The only draw back was, the coffee. I hot a double shot large and unfortunately it was just no flavour but milk...blah. Next time (oh yes, I'm definitely coming back) it will be a long black.
T. H.
Popular bakery with delicious crossisonts and baguettes. We had a selection of the baked goods and they were all great! I can see why this place is so popular. Highly recommended.
G.
Outstanding bakery with a great range of breads and a few pastries. We purchased a plain croissant, chocolate croissant and cinnamon scroll. All were superb and delicious.
My personal favourite was the chocolate croissant which has so many fine layers and a buttery consistency. It was so good I had to go back and buy another two.
Just picture Homer Simpson drooling at thought of his favourite food, it’s that good!

Honestly makes me feel like Lawson is a place I'd want to visit or live. Guy in front of me in the line was so stoked at the croissants that he told his wife on the spot that they were moving and flagged down a local to ask about living there.
The croissant was excellent, the fougasse was spectacular, crisp and leathery and filled with herbs and olives. The savoury swirl was good and but the highlight was the vegan croissant. Australians struggle to make a good croissant to begin with let alone when you take out it's primary ingredient. The nut butter replacement was so good that I'd be hard pressed to choose the regular one or the vegan one to be my favourite.
Coffee was good and all round, I can't wait to come back. Really excellent job.
K. D.
Food and coffee were spot on 👌
Staff were very friendly and efficient.

Awesome local bakery ... very popular and well deserved!!! The croissants are beautifully done, crusty on the outside and buttery, soft insides
A. Z.
The baked goods here are absolutely amazing! Our croissant was flaky perfection: buttery, crisp, and wonderfully golden.

My visit to Black Cockatoo Bakery wasn’t meant to be a review. I was passing through the Blue Mountains on the way back from Oberon, and remembered following them on Instagram because their croissants looked so perfect. Cue me, with just iPhone in hand, jumping out of the car to try one. I was so impressed with what I found, I snapped off a few photos...
Created with Pepe Saya butter, the plain Croissant ($4.50) at Black Cockatoo Bakery is truly a thing of beauty. My enjoyment at eating this buttery, well-shaped pastry was aided by the fact I got to watch former chef and now full-time baker, Alex Riviere rolling up the next batch of them while I queued.
Riviere immigrated from France and settled in the Blue Mountains with his wife. He began his Blue Mountains baking adventure by time-sharing a 120-year old Scotch oven in the wee hours at Vesta, a restaurant in Blackheath, until the new owners kicked him out in June 2017. This led to Riviere’s own digs - a minimalist but attractive shop in Lawson’s double-sided shopping strip.
Here you can eat your croissant the French way, dipped into coffee roasted by Wilderness Coffee Project, at a row of well-formed, blonde wood stools either looking out at passersby or looking into the open-plan bakery. If the weather is agreeable, you can also pull up a stump on the footpath outside - just be sure to lean a long way out when you bite into your Cinnamon Croissant ($4.50). While they pack a big, delicious brown sugar punch, they’re hella messy (as I found out in my car).
The tiny store’s metal shelves of bread are being depleted nearly as fast as Riviere and his team can bake bread to fill them up. Lots of the loaves I take home to sample are still warm, like the Fruit and Nut Loaf ($8), which is best served toasted with plenty of butter. Despite being generously stuffed with nuts, figs and other dried fruit, you really get a big taste from the bread itself. The crust is so good, the oft-shunned end pieces are my highlight.
Olive oil, rosemary and salt-topped Pizza Bianca ($3.50) catches my eye as something different to try. The triangular wedges of this flat bread prove just the ticket to accompany a roadside foraging find: gorgeous fresh field mushrooms. Fried off in olive oil and butter, this mushroom and bread pairing is perfect!
Of course the sourdough (pain au levain) is the real test. Here it’s handcrafted and slow fermented using a wild strain of yeast (levain) and organic stone-ground flour. Across a thin Baguette ($4.50) and a one-kilo Café White ($12) I’m impressed. The baguette is crusty and tasty, and the large loaf has a lightness to it and a reasonably even spread of air bubbles. I can see why it’s already on the menu at popular Blue Mountains cafes, Anonymous Café and Kickaboom (review forthcoming).
I suspect I will be stopping at Black Cockatoo Bakery every time I drive through the Blue Mountains.

Amazing croissants. Friendly service, lovely shop - haven't enjoyed bread so much in ages. Pain au chocolat especially nice - generous, delicious chocolate and incredible pastry. Pretty reasonably priced too.
R. E.
Best bread in the mountains! And delicious pastries as well. Highly recommend the small detour off the highway for those not local.
A. C.
Probably the best regional bakery I've been to.
Shame the coffee is only average
J. G.
Amazing staff and incredible pastry!
D. M.
Best French bakery you'll find in the Blue Mountains or even NSW! The bread is delicious and their pain au chocolat ('chocolate croissant' for aussies) is just like the real thing you would get in a parisian bakery.
V. B.
Delicious bread, amazing chocolate croissant, and I would say best coffee in town.
c. _.
Absolute gem. Loved their fougasse, pizza bianca, vegan croissant and various yummy pastries!
w.
Great bread which is absolutely 5 Star. Only drawback is occassionally long waiting time to be served as staff is too busy preparing coffees
S. B.
Possibly the best bakery in NSW. The pastries are buttery perfection. The 1kg whopper sourdough is also our bread go-to.
M. D.
Order coffee and pastry roll with cheddar, olive and onion. The pastry was delicious and crisp despite it being no longer fresh and warm out of the oven. The coffee on the other hand though was very average. Staff was super friendly and helpful when it came to asking them for recommendations.
Would definitely revisit again for the pastry but perhaps try to aim to arrive earlier in the morning so you can get them while it is still warm and freshly baked.
P. F.
Magnificent croissants and sour dough loaves..coffee good as well
H. S.
We love sourdough from this place. Coffee is pretty good too.
D. F.
Magnificent pastries and good coffee. Not sure about their mask policy. Some staff and customers not wearing masks.
V. C.
Came here because my French friend who lives in Sydney was insistent it has the best bread he's had in Australia. And he was right.
J. A.
it is an AMAZING place to eat at. The croissants 🥐🥐🥐 are SO delicious and crisp. 😋😇
V. T.
I actually love the product (the bread and everything else) .. but I reckon you guys should find a way to sell a loaf of bread to people who just want a loaf of bread without having to wait 20+ minutes.. which is pretty standard. I know lines out the front look cool and slow food movement etc etc.. but I reckon I buy about once a month instead of weekly cause whilst the product is good I'm not giving up 1 - 2 hours a month to buy it. Hope you solve it, would like to buy more of your product.. I've had a few conversations with people who feel the same so hope you take the feedback in the constructive way it's intended
J. S.
Great service great coffee, bread and cakes. You won't be disappointed.
A. M.
If you come to Blue Mountain, you have to buy the croissant. It is one of the best. It's crunchy and scrumptious👌.
C. A.
The pain aux raisins is the reason I drive an hour each way to this bakery. Omfg...buy one of everything!!! Highly recommended.. the coffee is outstanding too
A. B.
Super cute cafe bakery and the croissants are amazing!
a. s.
This bakery was recommended by a local. The baked goods are delcious and freshly baked everyday. The staff are friendly. We now stop by everytime we pass through the Blue Mountains and buy sourdough for the whole family! Highly recommend the cinnamon scroll!
C. D.
divine pasteries and bread, 10 outta 10 would recommend ❤❤
D. K.
Served like this.... Hmmmmmm not the smartest... The amazing bakers cooking this deserve there product presented better.
A. T.
Great little place but looks like it might get bigger. Not a problem though as there's plenty of space to eat outside. Great range of baked goods, there's not just sourdough, there's pastries as well. Service is fantastic and the team is really knowledgeable so if you don't know exactly what you want they'll help you out.
M. H.
5 stars all round, great coffee and the pastries are to die for
R. O.
Good Coffee, pains de chocolat and croissants too buttery if we compare to French from France. Sunday 10-15 minutes waiting for coffee. Friendly staff. Recommend.
M. C.
Amazing pastries! Get there early to get the best choice and be warned - there will be a queue but that's because everything is so delicious! Well worth the drive (45 mins) to savour the buttery goodness...
K. M.
In Europe artisan bakeries are a standard, but somehow in Australia you get all the places that bake their products from a deep frozen dough and you can tell it’s no different than some pastries at Woolies, but this bakery is authentic and you can feel the difference, the crunch and real butter. Doesn’t matter if I ate better or worse, these guys stand out and are worth checking out. Coffee’s good. They also have single origin beans from what I’ve seen on the blackboard.
s. c.
Best croissant I’ve ever had- the cinnamon croissant is insane! So crispy and layered on the top and then buttery cinnamon syrup in the bottom. It’s probably very convenient I am a visitor to the mountains, otherwise I would have zero willpower around this place.
I also bought a plain croissant which was deliciously light, crisp, well separated layered and a beautiful taste with Pepe Saya butter.
Also bought both fruit and chocolate hot cross buns- gorgeous texture, but the fruit were by far my preference.
This is my first google review, and I’ve bragged to so many people about this place!
C. A.
Outstanding pastry selection. The savoury escargot are flaky and delicious. The croissants were wonderfully flaky and buttery. Coffee is great too.
J. R.
Was told they have croissants and coffee. I must say, damn good croissants and coffee!
D. C.
If you're on your way through the Mountains be sure to check this place out. The food is so good it's easy to understand why the queues can be so long.
In case it helps anyone, the EFTPOS machine has been down the last couple of times I visited and they are had a sign near the front door. There is an ATM just around the corner which was easy enough to get to 👍
D.
The breads and pastries are amazing! This is the closest French style bread I've been able to find in Australia. The croissants are just like I remember in Paris. The pain au chocolat is to die for. I am so pleased that the mountains has such a wonderful bakery for this local foodie.
A. V.
This place sells freshly baked breads in the Blue Mountains.
We love the croissants. People always wait for them to open first thing in the morning because the breads are smelling so good from the outside.
N. L.
Coffee was excellent and the pastries were amazingly decadent - haven’t had anything like that in Australia - great reason to turn off the highway and take a break at Lawson!
A. A.
Just baked bread and cinnamon muffins fantastic croissants yummy snail pastries and a very impressive low gi bread called emmer or faro i haven't had any yet but the shop assistant could not talk it up enough well done just a little tip all that info put it next to your bread it will help u and customers
D. R.
A very popular bakery with excellent European based breads. Fresh made to an excellent quality with a variety available. We tried the cinnamon croissants they were really good. I will drive from Woodford just to get fresh bread for breakfast. When it first opened i was unsure if it would do well but the locals have embraced this bakery so much so there is often a line. I noted in one review some criticism regarding their croissants. I know people have different experiences and likes and dislikes but you have to remember that most Australians 40 years ago didn't know what a good coffee was much less good quality bakers
B. D.
Wow. I just finished my croissant and coffee from the great folks at Black Cockatoo Bakery. That was one of the best croissants I’ve had, ever. Hmm, I’ve been saying I would like to move to the mountains someday...
A. R.
Delicious, freshly baked pastries! Will be making it my pit stop whenever I travel through the Mountains. Absolutely recommend the coffee, danishes & raisin scrolls.
M. L.
Fantastic bread, and croissants, best on the mountain
E. T.
Great bread and proper filter coffee available.
Best croissants available in the mountains with a proper Pan Au Chocolat available!
The breads and naturally levitated and the baguette smells like a beer in the mash process.
Add some high quality ham and butter and you have an amazing Jambon-Beurre (ham sandwich).
Their range can be hit and miss depending on the time you get there (and can be closed all together) but that's what you get with a proper bakery.
Would recommend and will return 5/5 "Loved it"
N. G.
Amazing breads especially sour dough.
M. P.
Blue mountains is spoilt for choice for excellent bakeries and this is my local. Saturday is Apricot and fennel loaf day! Will change your life.
M. R.
Fantastic range of breads made from heritage grains which are much easier on my stomach than ordinary wheat breads.
H. M.
Very tasty sourdough range
S. M. N.
What I love most, beyond the DIVINE sourdough and croissants, is the beautiful atmosphere of both Lawson and Katoomba bakeries. Light, still, minimal, organic, wholesome ~ everything you need to cosy up with a croissant and coffee and feel so good afterwards ~
We love you guys! Keep doing the beautiful work you do X
M. H.
