Comments of Glengallan Homestead & Heritage Centre

It is a beautiful old building, with absolutely gorgeous views across the plains towards Cunningham's Gap. Unfortunately the building is in a state of much needed repair. The walls and ceiling are full of huge cracks and holes. It actually felt unsafe walking around inside ☹ I'm glad we decided to visit but probably won't go again.

When travelling between Toowoomba and Warwick, make sure you stop by for a visit. A great heritage of the past. They have a café with great light meals and coffee. The staff are friendly.
A. B.
Very informative and interesting. The homestead will be gorgeous when it's finished. Hope the Trust is able to source all the things it needs to restore it.

An interesting and informative look into the past. It had me asking a lot of questions. This is an honest and genuine place to visit. Don't expect to see a place done up like a museum; inside it is a true reflection of the neglect that it has suffered. Congratulations to the volunteers for a wonderful job in restoring this once majestic home.
The food at the Cafe is absolutely delicious and is home cooking at its best. Staff are friendly and only too happy to please.

Visited Glengallen Homestead and gardens on our way to Warwick and ended up spending a few hours there. Only $10 each to visit the homestead and gardens is well worth it. We spent an hour or so looking around outside and inside the homestead. Then we visited the cafe on-site which is also a great souvenir shop . What a great choice with much of the food homemade and cooked fresh each day. We had bacon, zucchini and haloumi fritters with tomato relish to start with and they were so flavoursome and delicious. Then finished with scones, raspberry jam -home made- and cream. They were still warm when we got them and so yummy. Definitely recommend a visit here and an added bonus, you can visit the sunflowers growing less than 5 minutes away.

I begged my OH to take me here as I’d seen so many leaflets about the place. Maybe I had just been spoilt by Pringles cottage but I found it deflating. Don’t get me wrong it’s wonderful what they are achieving with the house. I just didn’t find the staff really cared and was a bit disheartened when another family asked a lady if it was all run by volunteers and she said no we all get paid. You would think more locals would have stepped forward to volunteer. I would love to know how much has been spent on the upgrades to date, it must be a nightmare to fund. What a shame you can’t get the antiques and furniture back along with the gate posts.
We decided to dine with you that day and had two filos with salad. They were delicious. What would make it 100% better would be volunteers with an interest and some excitement in their work. We probably wouldn’t visit again now we have seen it. But. Huge congratulations to everyone on board

A must see on your travels. The building has a long way to be fully restored, what has been done is fantastic. Full of history and grandeur.
B. F.
A must see if you like old buildings. Needs alot more donations to fully restore. Great Australian heritage.

Worth a stop to explore this large homestead with an interesting backstory. Lovely, welcoming and knowledgeable staff. Did not eat at the cafe as was a stop in on the way home.
R. B.
An absolute must do, amazing little Cafe and fabulous service, The grounds were immaculate and it is obvious the care taken to continue restoration of this beautiful building.
F. S.
Highly recommended this very interesting heritage house. Great coffee and homemade scones before your tour of the house and grounds of Glengallan Homestead. Well worth stopping by. A must if travelling the New England Highway.
B. R.
A beautiful old homestead made of Sandstone, built in 1886 it’s a true reflection,a look back at a time long ago , a treasured piece of history. Perfectly preserved, stop for a bite to eat at the cafe before or after you view the old homestead.

If you are travelling between Toowoomba and Warwick on a laid back weekend, be sure to drop in to this historic site. They have a cafe with great light meals, and coffee . . . . and if you feel like travelling back in time, pay the modest entry, and look around inside Glegallen. The staff are very helpful and happy, and love to chat about the history of the area.
I. G.
Lovely partially restored Homestead from yester year. It gives a glimpse of how the wealthy farmers once lived.
The staff are welcoming and friendly, the cafe has nice food and good coffee. We enjoyed walking the grounds and the Homestead.
A. P.
Out in the Darling Downs to the north of Warwick is a grand homestead, constructed between 1864 and 1904 and rescued from dereliction in the 2000s.
To see this sandstone building today, with its beautiful verandah, it’s hard to believe that it was abandoned for more than 30 years.
You can pay a visit Wednesday to Sunday to savour the interiors, find out about the ongoing restoration and learn the Glengallan story, beginning in the 1830s with squatters.
You can buy tasty local produce and handmade gifts from the farm shop, while the Heritage Centre Cafe is a must for tea and scones
T. B.
We saw it as a ruin in the early 80's and finally made it back. It's definitely worth a stop. The Cafe serves good coffee as an added bonus
N. P.
Loved the feeling of grandeur here and the work that has been done to reinstate it. Cafe is beautifully designed to capture the views.
C. C.
This is an absolute must to visit. The homestead of a little slice of our English heritage and it's like stepping back in time.
A. C.
Such ashame that such a historic homestead has fallen in such disrepair.....still enjoyed seeing it and reading about its history.
R. F.
Great to see Australian heritage being preserved.
D. S.
An uniquely displayed piece of the Southern Downs region's history. The Station is well restored including interesting facts about the building's past. There is an amazingly large amount of preserved history written about this Homestead. The Cafe is reasonably priced, and is very serene with a nice view. The food is freshly cooked and the staff are friendly. Definetley worth a visit if you are in Warwick.
S. B.
Bit disappointed in the state of the old homestead. Expensive for a look at what needs to be done. Scones and coffee were nice.
R. H.
Grand old home and rose garden. Some incredible work has been done to restore it from ruins. It has been left in places to show just how bad it was. We had a lovely Devonshire Tea and warm drink on a very cold day. Views to surrounding district. The info board were awesome to give history of house and families who loved there. A great few hours and good insight to early settlers of region.
D. T.
A great place to visit. 45 min from Toowoomba an excellent day outing if you are looking for Australian history.
Good cafe with delicious food on offer. I recommend the bacon fritters.
A. P.
Beautiful serene place to take a trip back in time to.
N. C.
Such a surprise to see the series of photos from when it was inhabited to when it was in a desolate state and now since it has been partly refurbished.
D. H.
Had a great “coffee and scones” catchup with friends last Sunday. Can’t fault the service, the food, or the atmosphere. Great country cafe with a no-fuss menu in a beautiful setting.
s. r.
Its absolutely beautiful. The government should give them more money to finish the work of this grand old house.
G. W.
On going restorations , interesting to see how buildings were constructed in the 1800's. Well documented history. Can recomend the cafe for morning tea and lunch with home made cooking
A.
Lovely location with lots of history.
Little disappointed that when you run markets at yr location that you don't make sure that either the owners of stalls have eftpos or that you supply portable eftpos machines.
m. a.
Create cafe. Our favourite stop enroute to Warwick
M. V.
Well worth the money, a great restoration project. They certainly lived a different way back then.
T. _.
It's a great place to learn about the history and have a relaxing time over a coffee break.
C. H.
The wife and I just had a casual wander around this nice old place.. could do with a lot more restoration but what is there is very interesting .. even the mummified cat... the ladies at the souvenir and lunch shop were very friendly and the food was good and prompt
M. T.
Such a interesting beautiful old place.. I could imagine myself living there!
S. R.
Wow what a delightful place to visit. First we stopped and had lunch at their cafe open and spacious and the food was great and staff loverly. Then took a slow walk up to the beautiful house and wow you won't be disappointed and the huge verandas are to die for and the garden area its got beautiful views of the mountains. Its a got to see 😀
P. K.
House is lovely gardens are beautiful. If you go to the cafe be prepared to wait. There is a sign that says they don't serve fast food and they mean it. We waited 45 mins for a toasted sandwich, a filo and a milkshake.
L. R.
What a beautiful old building, partially restored to show how badly it had fallen into disrepair before being rescued.
M. T.
Very nice a great visit well done good to home in its glory
R. O.
Very interesting and informative. Credit to those who restored the stone house as best they could. It did send Deuchar broke so certainly is a money pit. Would have been a magnificent estate in its glory days.Lovely staff and food at the Cafe as well. Well worth a visit especially if the markets start up again.
c. d.
Good experience, my 4th or 5th grandfather was responsible for the small store and cellar on the property. I learnt so much more about the Slade family who once owned the place as well. Will be back the next time I'm in Warwick.
D. T.
Lovely old building. A unique part of our heritage. Worth a look. $10pp cheap
G. S.
I enjoyed looking at the house.
Nice snacks tea/coffee.
Nice hosts.
Easy parking.
Clean prep & eating area.
I recommend paying for access to house as the money used for looking at house is used to restore the building & surrounds as an important part of settlement.
Great information on timeline of building & families.
Respect needs to be shown here as the correct owners even to this day of the land is actually the local aboriginal people.
The Royal family needs to apologize for theft of land & murder of aboriginal people & hand the correct ownership of the land to the aboriginal people who still own this land & are still at war with the Royal family of Brittain.
Hand the land back you criminal Royal Family.
R. T.
Sadly the coffee shop let's this place down , if funds are needed to keep this beautifully restored building it needs the right service and selection of country style food.
R. D.
Very interesting history. Strange how it is like half a house, the original owner probably had an extension in mind! Lovely tea room. 🙂
B.
So moved to see that regional Australian history is being preserved here.
The homestead, though still in need of some work, is a step back in time.
I could imagine the grand dinners and parties, the women descending the staircase in their Victorian style dresses.
The views are extraordinary from both the ground level and the upper floor.
The gardens would be something magical to behold in spring (we visited in the height of summer, in the middle of a long drought).
There is a fair bit of walking involved if you tour the house and grounds.
The path is not suitable for wheelchair, nor can a standard, manual wheelchair manoeuvre easily inside the historic house.
We didn't try the food at the cafe as we had not long had breakfast, but hubby says the coffee was great.
The people running and maintaining the property are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Along with the historic information around the property, house and cafe, they are a wealth of stories about the house, the families who have lived there and the local area.
Glengallen is a must visit.
k. z.
It's probably the oldest building in the area and definitely one of the grandest. If you like old buildings and have an appreciation for local history the $10 entry ticket is worth the cost. Considering the building was left abandoned for over 30 years and almost fell apart, they have restored it to a reasonable level so you can get a glimpse of what it might've been like in it's hay day. Unfortunately the damage was pretty severe so there's still some of evidence of its ruined state yet to be restored. I believe you can also have tea and scones for a snack.
C. H.
We had morning tea, then went through Glengallan Homestead, what an amazing home it would have been on the their heyday.
V. H.
We had a High Tea with some friends today so good !!!!The atmosphere and service were terrific and the food was generous and delicious would thoroughly recommend it.
J. C.
A gem of a place to stop and take in some local history. Amazing restoration and the homemade scones are divine!
G. W.
We visited after coming from Warwick. Food was great and well priced. Service was very slow. Took 2.5 hours to have lunch. Wouldn't go back.
B. O.
Beautiful old home in the process of being restored.
K. G.
Ex part of history well keep spent 4 his learning and then had a nice lunch in their Cafe a must visit when in the area
S. E.
Absolutely stunning! A step back in time. You can almost feel the presence of everyone who lived there. I hope the restoration continues, and this wonderful slice of history is preserved forever 🤗
S. S.
Love beautiful old buildings, lots of history.
H. L.
Relaxing atmosphere and nice scenery, we had scones, biscuits, coffee and tea, then walked around a little bit. We had a nice time there!
G. M.
Visited Glengallan Homestead for the first time three years ago , whilst on holiday from the UK . I had thought about the house many times since , and welcomed the opportunity to return again this weekend . The beauty and the poignancy of house did not disappoint . The feelings of sadness and failures echoed down the years , the families that tried so hard to succeed and the house then left to die .
The Glengallen Homestead Trust have done magnificent work in restoration and must be congratulated. The coffee shop shouldn’t be missed either ....the scones are delicious !!
P. B.
An old house full of history. Was vacated and fell into disrepair due to weather, vandalism etc. It has been partialy restored, but some of the old areas have been left, so you can see how bad it was. There is also a cafe remote from the mansion. We went on a free admission day, so won't comment on value, but we certainly enjoyed our visit.
F.
Great work preserving and restoring an important part of Queensland's history. Glengallan was once called the finest house in the (Australian) colonies. We also liked the cafe--nice food and panoramic views.
N. S.
Ten of us enjoyed a light lunch at Glengallan Homestead on Sunday, so relaxing having lunch overlooking the vast views of the property and distant mountains. Friendly volunteers do a great job of serving.. as did the gentleman in the Homestead sharing the history and future of the past and current renovations to the Homestead itself.
Will return again
Natalie

Good food... enjoyable staff... great outlook. I'm a repeat visitor and I love my time at Glengallan.
C. L. X.
Glengallan Estate is a restored pre-Federation homestead.
It stood abandoned for several decades, but recently has been wonderfully restored to it's former glory.
Worth a visit, nice cafe also, but a little expensive.
G. A.

T. H.

If you are going past this is definitely worth a visit. Alot of work has been done to restore the homestead. Still more work to be done but of course that takes money.
L. M.
Friendly, clean and the small menu was fantastic. All home made and cooked as you wait. The view sitting having our meal was great.
J. D.

J. J.
Plenty of stalls but not much variety. The coffee shop was ok but cuppa tea was luke warm.
A. L.
Magnificent to learn more of Queensland and Australia's history and particularly the Southern Downs and Glengallan Homestead. Congratulations to Donna Fraser and all the volunteers for the legacy you've created and continue to create for future generations.
S. M.

It's fascinating to walk the old house and imagine. I liked that in part they had left small areas un renovated so you could see how much they'd worked on it.
