Comments of GOMA Bistro

Great place, inner city views situated beside the Brisbane River. Outdoor sitting area's as well as indoor. Delicious range of food choices & a cool click with the staff as well as being friendly & helpful...finally the coffee is great. See elephant for outdoors.

The fella and I decided to hit GOMA before the APT10 show ended. We had a quick look around (our second time) and then headed downstairs for lunch. The bistro is right on the river with city views, water dragons and big trees. You can sit outside or enjoy the air con inside. Staff were efficient and prompt, if perhaps not overly warm. As usual these days, ordering was at the counter. We drank sparkling mineral water for moi, and ginger beer for him. He went for the corn croquetas, plus a side of chips and aioli, while I had the poached chicken salad with peanut and coconut dressing. My salad was very generous with lots of tender chicken, and had a tangy dressing. He enjoyed his croquetas which had lots of corn, rather than being a pancake. This was a good thing :=-) They were golden on the outside, with a corny interior, and had a generous grating of smoked cheddar over the top. Chips were fine as was the aioli, but I do wish they were more generous with the garlic in their aioli. (But I am a garlic fiend.) All up, a filling and tasty lunch before heading to pastures new.

This bistro is conveniently accessed by a lift inside GOMA which means you don't have to sign back in and out but can stop for a rest as we did while viewing the APT10.
The menu is limited but they have specials on a board.
You order at the counter with a table number.
I waited a long time, over 15 minutes to have my order taken due to a woman with very rude children that monopolised the counter with their demands.
The staff member behind the counter handled the situation with style and humility.
As a result there was a line of people that had built up and my order came a long time after my friend who had finished eating.
One till taking the orders just doesn't work and you can see the line builds up during lunch service.
Coffee is ok not high end and my latte was so frothy it was almost unenjoyable.
The corn croquetas and vegetarian mushroom banh mi were lovely.
There is a cakes cabinet with some treats, healthy popsicles for hot days and large water coolers to help yourself to chilled water.
Service was very good, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
It's licenced with good disability access.
Perfect for a break when visiting GOMA.

High points: gnocchi with smoked pumpkin and kale was well presented with nice flavours and colour, pastrami bagel with pickles was tasty and indulgent, service was fast despite big crowds. Low points: wrong wine brought out (correct one delivered after long wait), water for two never appeared, bagel dumped on a plate with little care or even a hint of greenery for presentation (as other reviews have mentioned).
S.
Food was lovely we had the croquettes, bahnmi, and the cheese and cold meat plate. Can't fault the food.
The service was quick but I found it very rude to have my plate taken while the other two at my table were still eating and I was interrupted mid sentence as my plate was whisked away.
I would give a five star but the episode put a bad taste in my mouth. We felt like we were being pushed out.

Ate lunch here for spouse's birthday and the food was incredible. Poached chicken, bean sprout, coriander, peanut & coconut dressing salad, and Tambourine Cheese stratcciatella with heritage tomatoes, rosemary crouton and nduja for our mains, with truffle chips and charred greens as sides. Saga pudding for dessert. Really top class food in a gorgeous setting, attached to one of the best art spaces in the world. Honestly, what more do you want? Service was good, efficient, and friendly. Such a perfect meal for the occasion.

Situated at the back of the Gallery of Modern Art and right next to the river this cafe has the perfect location. It tends to get very full in the air conditioned section and then you have to sit outside if you are ok with the heat.
The waiter was friendly but the queuing at the till system to order is awkward because it's hard to see who is next.
I think it should be table service given that the prices are astronomical. We had two veggie burgers ( no chips or separate salad just a bun with a bit of beetroot and lettuce )and they were $20 each!
Accompanied by a coffee and an iced coffee our lunch bill was $54!.
A nice touch was the wait staff were going around bringing everyone cold water top ups as needed.
I would go again for the location and a coffee but beware the prices are more restaurant than cafe prices.
Coffee was very average.

One of our favourite place to eat in Brisbane. Good service. Constantly changing and interesting menu. Coffee is good too. Highly recommended.
Z. “. F.
We have often stopped here for lunches, hard to imagine a better place in Brisbane to show off the city to visitors. Great location overlooking the river and Kurilpa Bridge. Huge shady roof over so OK for almost any weather, especially Brisbane sunny summer. Good food and coffee, a place to take visitors to Brisbane.
A. P.
I’ve been here twice. Great coffee the first time, but expensive, average tasting food the second. I had to return the cos parmigiana salad because it wasn’t washed properly and had creepy crawly spiders in it. $47 for three dishes, none of which left us feeling full. Not a pleasant experience unfortunately.
P. R.
Excellent coffee, breakfast and varieties of cakes. The atmosphere is amazing, great city views and the river breeze is perfect. The staff is super friendly and extremely fast services! Well done
C. R.
Absolutely incredible! The best food I've had in ages. Because this and other descriptions say "swanky" I thought we were going to get tiny portions on massive plates - but it turned out we were so full for the rest of the day that we had to skip dinner. The roasted cauliflower had a beautiful colour and texture. It was perfectly complemented by mint, crunchy kale, pomegranate and spiced hummus. The setting is great as well, in a shady spot overlooking the river and CBD.
B. P.
Pretty awesome staff. The woman who took me to my table was the most delightful character I've encountered today. The Wagyu pastrami bagel is a nice take on a Reuben sandwich, pretty tasty. It's certainly not a deal breaker, but I reckon you guys should get some nicer plates and coffee mugs and go a bit more hipster on the presentation and the types of coffee you offer and you'll be perfect. Either way I'll be back.
m. g.
Above average food. Small selection but good food. Nice ambience right on the river surrounded in tranquil setting.

Update: 07/2017
Went again and was disappointed again. We ordered the Pork Belly share platter which included a pear/apple sauce, roasted pears, pear chips, lentils and pork belly. If you were to eat with your eyes you'd be extremely satisfied. However, though the pork belly was cooked wonderfully it lacked seasoning. The lentils and roasted pears were both undercooked, and pear chips were soft and chewy, and the apple/pear sauce lacked any flavour. The side dish of sweet potatoes with aioli was good, but not good enough to save the day.
--
The service is fantastic with friendly staff. The view of the river and city skyline can't be beat. And that's kind what you're paying for. The menu looks promising, but fell flat. The Pork Fillet share platter I had was an imbalanced act: super sour plums, apple sauce lacking in flavour, and a pork fillet which was dry. The $8 side leaf salad was underwhelming for the price. I'm going to give this place another go (as I enjoy visting GOMA), so I'll update on how that goes.
M. C.
Very busy nice coffee shop - lots of seating inside and out overlooking the river. Nice coffee!
A. D.
Good quality food, as well as great location and good service, but very expensive for what it is. I don't mind supporting the bistro given GoMA is free, but wouldn't go here if not visiting GoMA.
V. R.
A great little stop in a courtyard of the building. Prices are fair and not loaded due to the location, good range of seating options inside, but far better options outside on the terrace overlooking the courtyard garden with the water feature behind. Just a coffee and biscotti, but a welcome stop after wondering through the exhibits and galleries.
R. H.
Great coffee and good selection of food. Excellent views of the river and city in quiet area.
L. D.
Food options are limited, and prices are not great as expected but the view is amazing. A great place to treat yourself between gallery and museum visits
B. l.
Pleasant aspect to the river, friendly staff. Very busy but so was the MET exhibition. This is 10% of the line at 10 am Monday
D. D. G.
Wow, amazing food and great service. The dishes we had were amazing. The chicken consume and the blt were just the best. Definitely found a new spot!
J. A.
We loved our experience ... 30 people going to a GOMA exhibition afterwards. We just had coffees and tea and juices and cakes muffins excetera because we were earlier than the food menu kicking in. They were under the pump because of the huge number of people there. Their normal barista hadn't turned up on the day so they had a replacement in who really struggled to deliver the coffees on time but you can't criticise the business for that misfortune ... it happens to every business at some time.
v. s.
The whitting was award winning. Mouth watering. Even the halipinoes were great. Salivating while I ate! Excellent place to have a iced chocolate at $5.00. Best price in town.
N. T.
The food here is nice, albeit a bit more expensive than the surrounding places, and high-quality, with reliable service. Been coming here for years without issue, and they have always (to the best of my recollection) had vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options available on their menu.
H. L.
Such a great little brunch spot. I came with my coworkers and the hospitality was exceptional. As soon as we walked in the staff greeted us and gave us recommendations and a run down of the whole menu. Customer service was top notch as well as the food.As part of our NC road trip we spent the better half of a delightful afternoon touring Greensboro's Blandwood Estate. First time to visit the mansion and we were not disappointed.
A. B.
The food and service here is great. It's a nice stop off after viewing the art or using the library, and so close to the river if you want to go for a relaxing walk. I enjoy this cafe because it is usually quiet. It is a great place to read or get some work done whilst you enjoy their decent coffee.
J. M.
Great to see the GOMA Bistro lifting their act. After several disappointing visits a friend suggested we try again..All 5 of us loved our meal and it's such a fabulous position. ...b back.soon
M. M.
Mussel soup, an Italian chef would be proud of. Every mouthful delicious, close to Divine. Know you you won't mind the description, Madonna. Consume before The Masters from The MET.
T. H.
Little cafe with a big heart! It is the mecca for great coffee, breakfast, brunch or lunch. A great little find. Every dish seems to be made with quality ingredients and attention to detail. The Staff are friendly and the service is excellent. Definitely Recommend it!
V. S.
Bit hit and miss as the menu options are always changing to the themes of some of the gallery attractions. This can be both interesting and frustrating at times. For the most part, the coffee is good and there's usually ample seating and a nice view/atmosphere. The staff is generally polite if a little frazzled. On the other hand, the queues can get very long with long waiting times and, as this is a kid friendly/family friendly place, there are usually a lot of small children running about. Not the best place for an after gallery visit coffee but not the worst either.
M. H.
Nice cafe down on the river front. You sort of have to know it is there to find it. N ice enough coffee and the staff are friendly and efficient. Nice view over the river into the city and far enough away from the Southbank cafes that it not crowded. Have not eaten here but the menu looks nice and has kid friendly options at a decent price. Overall if you are looking for a quiet place for a coffee or somewhere to sit down with the kids after traipsing through Goma or the Museum, this is worth a stopover.
W. L.
Very limited options and a long wait for food. I would expect a few more healthy options. Staff were lovely though. We ordered the share plate of charcoal chicken (lots of charcoal items on menu!) and a side of beans (which was yummy).
O. D.
Absolutely the best for location and food. Lovely under the trees by the river.
K. “. L.
Nice enough coffee, disappointing and unsatisfactory sml serving sizes, undercooked chips. Wont be back unless desperate.
R.
Great location right on the river and friendly staff but average food. To be fair, we only had burgers and steak sandwiches, so maybe the 'plates' would have been better. Oh and the coffee was great. Still good value.
J. W.
Enjoyed the food and service. Beautiful location
I. L.
You need to book ahead as they only do small number of guests for lunch and dinner. Delicious and beautifully presented food. Service is top notch. Definitely recommended! GOMA members get invites to private events at the restaurant.
y. u.
Went here to recharge my energy just after visiting GOMA, then was able to fill it perfectly! Ahhh, all the staff were friendly.
J. W.
This is a review for Goma Restaurant (upstairs) not the downstairs Cafe. They are worlds apart.
Took my partner here for her birthday for a three course lunch and everything was superb. This is one of Brisbane's best fine dining lunch options.
D. K.
Love this place for the location and the food. This the cafe at the front on the river. Great value.
I have also eaten in the restaurant. The food was some of the best I have eaten. The only disappoint thing was the bill and 4 people cost me $600. The wine is just too expensive.
J. W.
Top class food. Beer was from a local micr- brewery in Newstead
V. M.
Had dinner at GOMA restaurant on Friday 22 April, 2016. Amazing food. Great service. If you can get a table here for dinner, do it! One of Brisbane's best kept dining secrets.
P. B.
The Thai beef salad lack flavour but the Beef was very nicely cooked. Nice place to stop for lunch after a trip to GOMA - but would recommend another trying another dish.
N. J.
Ok coffee, ok food. In a pinch it will wet your whistle but if you have time keep walking
J. C.
Simple cafe with decent coffee. The feature really is the location. Lovely shady area on the river with views across to the city. It is a quiet haven to rest after exploring the galleries.
L. H. 3.
Great view of the river for a quick bite alone, with friends or to meet with your date. Friendly staff every time.
S. M.
Wonderfully attentive lovely people who made our afternoon much more memorable with brilliant service and yummy treats. Thank you.
J. Y.
Meals are fancy but small

Recently I had a delicious lunch which was made special by a wonderfully kind & thoughtful waitress, Kate. She was really made me feel very comfortable when I was having a bad day. Thanks again to her.
A.
Unexpectedly great food amd good wine. The mapo chicken wings were yummy. A nice view onto the river and city
S. C.
Thankfully the location is good and the staff friendly.
Unfortunately the coffee has not been good at all in the times we have visited. Very tasteless :-(
C. D.
Delicious caramel banana cake and coffee with beautiful river views
M. F.
No brekkie menu 🤷♂️
Other than that - service was decent, coffee was pretty good.
J. B.
Nice location and good service. A bit more expensive than your average cafe, but quite nice overall.
H. M.
A really nice place for a quick coffee with friends or family. Good coffee, good views but can sometimes get very busy, especially when there's an exhibition on at GOMA
J. K.
Well seasoned delicious food, well thought out combinations and nice outdoor seating area as well. Tried few different dishes, all well prepared and delicious. Highly recommend.
M. G.
Their salmon dish was quite tasty. Chips here are good too. Great place to take a break from traversing the museums.
C. S.
Couldn’t be a better position by the Brisbane River in a courtyard style shady garden
Overlooking all the action of the riverside expressway, boats and people and cyclists
Views forever !!!

V. W.
Love this cafe. Good food good staff and sitting by the Brisbane River is very relaxing. Close to the city and in the mix of the Cultural Precinct. Ahhhh Brisbane....
D. R.
A cafe in the Arts precinct with standard food fare but with a great riverside and park location bathed in sun - very pleasant place to relax and chat after a stroll through the galleries in the area.

Best place in town to take a break from the busy city. Indulge with the calming shade of the trees, right down at the river. The cakes are right there waiting for you.

A stark cafe after the visual variety of the QAG. Sunday afternoon - ran out of scones! Skinny flat white fine but service slow.
