Comments of Smith's Alternative
L.
Is this the most lovely place? I just arrived from Sydney here and found this little treasure. Being from Berlin, the entire interior and vibe reminded me of home. I bought a few of their self-baked goods, enjoyed two Chai latte and a Monkeys Sloe gin, and basked in the atmosphere this venue created. Behind me sat a young fella who started playing guitar and he really had a nice, warm voice that just enhanced the entire ambience. They seem to have regular program too here, from poetry performances to bands playing.
I was looking for a place to write on my book, having my laptop there and also being around an inspiring vibe, and I totally found that at Smiths Bookshop. Lovely staff, great setting, alternative style - my new favourite in Canberra ❤️👌🏾👌🏾

I just love Smith’s Alternative. Such a cool, no fuss venue with a chilled bohemian vibe. Nigel and the team do an amazing job of supporting Canberra’s creative arts community. Highly recommended for drinks, gigs and an eclectic range of creative activities anyone can join. All you need to bring is a sense of irony and a big dollop of enthusiasm. Good coffee and brownies are a definite added bonus.
E.
Really great cafe to see live performances. Relaxed atmosphere and on trend decor. Some of the seats can be a little uncomfortable but easy enough to swap chairs around. Good food and drinks too!
S. A.
Full of friendly people with a unique environment that made me extremely comfortable.
J. W.
Really good place to find out new talent in Canberra. Usually really cheap entrance. Good choice of drinks too.
R. N.
Intimate venue with an eclectic design and seating . A range of cakes, sandwiches and other snack food, good range of coffee, hot chocolate and alcoholic beverages. As the name suggests is popular with a wide range of alternative performers and artists.
S. M.
Recently expanded in size, Smith's offers friendly service, a well stocked bar, a small but delicious menu, an eclectic decor, and a varied line up of regular live acts. They even let you bring your dog to the outside tables. Smith's is a Canberra institution that doesn't take itself too seriously. Highly recommended.

Cool little place for drinks food and live music :) plenty of stuff always going on here, but quiet enough sometimes to just sit and chill in peace with a borrowed book ;)
B. D.
This place is incredible for its warm cosy atmosphere and exceptionally inclusive community. There's even a wall full of instruments which anyone can take down and play in the cafe whenever they want. Just a great place.
G. P.
Nice hangout, variety of drinks on offer. I'm not cool enough to really be in the place, but they let me in for a concert, which was nice of them. Staff were very nice to regulars.
G. W.
The venue had so much atmosphere being from Melbourne I was impressed and Will be back.
A. W.
Lovely, relaxing vibe. All their events are fun and enjoyable and they have a good variety of snacks. Their event hall is simply amazing. Definitely recommend going to an event with friends or solo.
S. M.
One of the most interesting venues there is, to call it a mere cafe does not do it justice A vital part of the creative arts and live music scene without which Canberra would be a much grimmer place to live.
M. O.
Just happened to walk past and drop in for a coffee. Got the added bonus of some live music which was very enjoyable. Was a pleasant way to enjoy some time out of the weather and relax with good coffee and good vibes.
S. C. R.
Smith's Alternitave is a happening venue in the heart of Canberra. Great coffee & homemade food and a spacious live music room, very friendly staff!
L. N.
Come as you are, pull up a brown studded arm chair, get chatting to the peeps next to you and sip on your $8 gin & tonic with the lime run ‘round the edge of the glass and listen to the band warm up. Smith’s Alternative is the shaggy dog comfy live music bar equivalent to everyone’s slightly mad but loveable eccentric aunt. When the band hits the pedal, about two songs into their set is about as long as the crowd can take it before they hit the dance floor like an elastic band that’s just been flicked. No barriers here, from your bearded grandad to school leaver sisters, they are all carving it up on the dance floor, at peace with their world and happy in the here and now of this uncomplicated little gem in a city that otherwise tends towards complication.

FINALLY, a place that puts real chocolate in my mocha! AND when I ask for 'extra hot', it actually arrives extra hot!
AND has friendly staff that are also being real (as opposed to acting friendly).
Place is genuine. Yeah a bit rough around the edges, but that's a part of the charm.
Will be back.
N. G.
Absolutely Brilliant! Wish I had found Smith's years ago.
The team there were incredibly professional while still being 'fun'.
The quality of their audio, mixing and lighting was exceptional - even more so given the context was young new bands.
I'm looking forward to going to Smith's more often! Whether it's to see @Chins.Band or for any other event.
Thank you Smith's for everything you do for the community and for supporting new talent in Canberra!
G. K.
Quirky little cafe. I like they have events! Stuff a bit hit and miss. Some guys were very polite, some girls a bit - what do you want now type of vibe? I also like the atmosphere, but they might want to check out some of their furniture. Some are tilted or broken and very hard to write something (those close to the small aquarium). Coffee was great!
A. G.
A very comfortable chic place with delicious veggie options, free wifi and friendly staff - great place to relax during the day and get some work done.
E. K.
I love the vegan food options at Smith's Alternative, especially the peanut butter brownies. It's nice that tea, coffee and softies are on offer as well as alcoholic beverages. It's great that the venue has been able to expand so now the cafe' and the space for performances (mostly music) are each more clearly defined. I've only been to a concert once which I enjoyed very much. Usually I go to the cafe'.
M. J.
Absolutely what you need in your life, words will not do it justice.
Come.
Here.
Make an excuse.
You won't regret it.
N. Y.
So many great gigs and events! A lot of variety too including unique bands, emergicng artists, plays and poetry slams. Very supportive of artists. Such a chill atmosphere and the staff are all very kind😊 Definitely recommend visiting and going to some events!
C. C.
Awesome cafe - bar. Canberra doesn't have a lot of places that offer coffee after 6 pm (even at 1am). One of my favourite places to have a relaxed and not so noisy talk.
S.
Relaxed place for a good drink and snack whilst sitting outside or listening to great local bands inside.
T. A. J. S.
Good coffee, array of snacks (which are frequently vegan!) and cozy. Versatile array of performances and musicians frequent the place. Not bad but not my cup of tea overall, some damn strange and slightly creepy people visit this place at times and it can get very crowded when a show is on. The owners are nice enough, although whilst not necessarily a negative I should note I can never figure out if Nigel is sincere or trolling us with his mannerisms.
R. S.
Staff were great and the band Beta Blockers were awesome. Hope to see them there again soon.
G. S.
Spent a pleasant hour here on a rainy Sunday afternoon listening to a local jazz combo with my son. A nicely laid-back venue.
M. H.
Laid back, shabby chic venue. Great for coffee or something alcoholic. Live entertainment including open mic nights. An array of musical instruments you can pick up and play if you so desire.
C. S. (. J.
I love Smith's. It's just great. Imagine your loungeroom as a cafe and all the best local talent keeps turning up to rock the place. Coffee is good, food is a bit basic but cheap and cheerful. Smith's is Canberra's culture at it's finest.
Oh. And it's super queer friendly. Always a plus.
D. M.
The new layout is great. Canberra's real music venue. On par with Basement and Soup Plus from 70's and 80's Sydney Jazz Scene. Lets hope it can become just as legendary. A must vist. Easy, laid back and comfortable. Highly recommend.
B.
The staff were friendly enough, the coffee was nice. I wouldn't say it's the most comfortable place to sit outside, there was a woman who seemed a bit odd who was staring at everyone so didn't feel too relaxed, bit too open out there. But I would definitely go back to go to one of their events.
D. N.
Smiths is a place with a unique feel. Awesome vibe, great staff, great events. One of the best places in Canberra to read a book or meet new people.
Fully licensed, great coffee and cakes and central to anywhere you'd want to eat dinner.
W. P.
Awesome coffee, organic teas, vegan desserts. WHYYYY it has to smell that bad 😭
The sofas and the place smells like sweaty people who doesn't use deodorant nor haven't showered in a few days. Shame, because I really like the relax environment, lovely staff and amazing products.
P. “. C.
the services is always fantastic, its down to earth, very relaxed and stylish, its sorta the place you wanna be to just unwind on your break bring a book and read over a warm pot of tea
S.
This was my favourite place in Canberra. I'm so glad we found it and went! Didn't get a chance to catch some live music; but the staff, the set up and vibe was great. Very old school Brunswick.
There are two pianos on the premises that anyone can tinker on, as well as a wall & corner of heaps of other instruments.
My mates and I spent the afternoon jamming, listening to others come and go, and learning how to play Carrom. Very chill.
B.
Great music and shows every night of the week showcasing local, interstate and international acts. Brilliant vibe, amazing sound quality and solid coffee too. If you're from out of town, this place should be high on your list of places to visit.
A. S.
A quirky fun bar. It’s a cosy and relaxed venue which often has great local and touring bands.
The atmosphere, furniture and decor make you feel like you’ve walked into an old friend's share house with people who are super laid back. And then they tell you to make yourself at home and help yourself to the six pack in the fridge while they duck down the street to get some more beer and some snacks for later.
The only drawback is the sound quality.
But it is one of Canberra’s few bars that doesn’t bend over backwards to be the latest cool hipster bar full of people trying to impress each other. It’s not the friend who wants you to notice their latest tattoo from their ‘fav famous uber-cool but obscure artist’. It is just happy being the weird but down to earth and genuine old friend who you always have great fun, plenty of laughs and great conversations with and who always puts on the best parties.
e. p.
... groovy scene ... i like it when the music is the doors jim morrison and bob dylan and skyhooks ... the drinks are good but mine are always non-alcoholic ...
J. G.
Very different place, liked the atmosphere but we ordered a vegan cheese platter and I wouldn't bother again.
s. L.
Order a hot or cold drink and a snack, grab anyone of the dozens of instruments laying around and tap out a tune with your friends in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere or just find a book on any one of the shelves to read. Plenty of comfy lounges inside and outside. Pretty fun, groovy place. From teens to the grey haired. Alternative types to suits. Small stage for regular music.
E. H.
A great little venue to hear some very talented local Canberra musicians. It's good to get there early though to secure one of the comfy armchairs or sofas :-)
M. R.
Very laid back vibe, Canberra style. You can opt for coffee or alcohol and sit out in the sun on a sofa or armchair, watching the street parade. Not a massive choice when it comes to food but they do a truly excellent vegan banana bread. Night times feature a wide range of live acts.
E. G.
Smith's Alternative, is perhaps one of the very few alternative spaces left in Canberra. It has a lovely beatnik vibe, it's main function is to feature local and interstate musicians. The owners Nigel and Beth have been promoting bands for many years now, with a focus on folk music and acoustic instrumental bands. They are both musicians themselves and they know how to put on a gig.
I love the atmosphere of Smith's. If you have an interest in the alternative culture going back to the 1990's: when the word 'alternative' meant "freer thinking" rather than " leather binding", then Smith's is the place to go. It is a slice of Canberra's soul. An echo from a time when Canberra wasn't just a Public service town, but a Uni town as well; when Uni was actually worth going too, and people studied in pursuit of refining their intellect, as apposed to chasing the dollar. Academics call our alternative culture 'counter culture', but you can't really label a thing and expect to understand it, you have to experience it. So, even if not going there for the music, it's a great place to hang out and relax.
B. Q.
An absolute must when you're visiting Canberra. The heart of great indie music in the nation's capital. I just sat down with a coffee and a bloke took a seat at the outdoor piano and gave a brilliant spontaneous recital.
S. W.
This eclectic laidback cafe is always a delight to visit! Often I have happened upon some kind of alternative music gig going on while I’ve been there (occasionally it has been too loud..but that’s the nature of it!) and I like that they are open throughout the day and into the night - their various mismatched couches are comfy and of course add to the bohemian atmosphere..They have a decent vegan sweets menu including items such as their sticky date pudding (delicious! But a lil too sweet for me) and their Anzac slice which is my favorite!!😋 I haven’t tried many of their savoury snack offerings but I’ve seen friends order their vegan cheese toasties and they’ve looked delicious too! Beautiful coffees and chai lattes too 🙂
A.
Beautiful place with a cosy vibe, love the coffee and the book collection. The piano is a nice touch and really enjoy relaxing on the couches. The food is also pretty good! Will definitely be visiting again.
D. M.
Delicious ales for all ages. Bring the family and get buzzed. Couldn’t find a nicer place to sit outside and chat with friends. Often the outdoor piano is getting a thrashing by local artists. Sometimes by local weirdos too but it all adds to the delightful experience.
C. W.
This was a random night out which we thoroughly enjoyed. The relaxing environment, the friendly staff, and the Flamenco band followed by a rock band project facilitated by ANU school of music all added to the uniqueness of this place. Love it!
F. L.
Came in the the first time and watching and listening to a great jazz band named Key Grip. These guys are terrific.
I heard about this place recently.
The boss was on the door...Nigel.
The atmosphere is intimate, cozy and this old heart is finally glad I am among persons of my own ilk.
Am new to Canberra. Long may you reign.
V. L.
Smith's Alternative used to be a small place with very cool small acts, a decent but small range of options if wanted to nibble or drink. But they just expanded and it shows a more mature management, better area for the acts, better options for a quick sip and bite.
Find them online, see what's going on, come to support and enjoy local and national artists and performers.
P. H.
Smith's Alternative is possibly the nicest live music venue in Canberra, for both performers and audience members alike. With acts ranging from jazz to experimental, to pop/rock, the lineup of gigs at Smith's is guaranteed to have something for everyone, most nights of the week, often from early evening til late. There's also great food and drink available (in particular good coffee and snacks). I'm a big fan of Smith's, as any true Canberran should be.
T. “. B.
In my travels I've seen a lot of dive bars. My favorite kind are the type that are more like going to a friends house than finding a seedy hole in the wall to take a drink.
From its live acts, borrowable instruments and cafe atmosphere - in canberra you're not going to find anywhere else that feels as warm and charming.
I. W.
Comfortable and warm with live music or a performance almost every night.
Smiths Knows exactly what it's wants to be and that makes for a great place to read, do some work or have an afternoon beer or 3.
S. S.
Great venue for live music performances. Nice coffee too.
S. B.
My favorite place in Canberra. Welcoming, loving community atmosphere, fantastic coffee, great food, and wonderful entertainment! The ultimate community lounge room <3
J. W.
THE quirky queer alt-art location in central Canberra. With various artists’ events from the nerdy to the erotic, Smith’s position as a Canberra cultural hub is enabled by the friendly staff, inclusive labelling of food ingredients in the delicious snack fare.
While an event location rather than an eatery, Smiths’ still manages to put on a good show in their coffee arena, and being licensed, they can even slip in a shot of Baileys to start the evening right.
L. P.
Cool bar/cafe. I'm glad this place exists especially in the corporate hell hole that is Canberra's CBD. Wasn't really made to feel like I belonged when I walked in to order a beer for the first time but I guess that's this whole place's schtick.
J. K.
Such a cute spot! We had some delicious vegan treats, some alcohol and then played some music with the staff, who were super lovely!
Thanks for being so awesome :).

Abandon your cares. Take a break. Be whatever you want to be. This is an oasis of sanity.
Have a coffee, or a drink, or a sandwich. Read, play chess or converse.

Smith's Alternative is, quite honestly, a living legend. Go to Smith's. Remember what fun is again.
