Comments of Criterion Street Cafe

Great breakfast or brunch place.
Have ate here 3 times this week and had a different meal each time.
My standouts are the Corn fritters and the Pork Sword ( potato pancakes with pulled pork) yummo . Good hot coffee as well
M. K.
Lovely sitting in the sun watching the world pass by. Food was delicious. Tea was hot. Service was fast and staff were friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend - especially the waffles!
S. D. P.
Great breakfast! Delicious. Highly recommended.
In photo: french toast
B. M.
Just had coffee but it was excellent, so I had two. Piccolos were perfect. Definitely a great choice for coffee, their Zimmah blend was exceptional.
T. M.
Nice little cafe. Friendly service. Enjoyed a dirty chai and loved the Three Cheese French Toast. It was well balanced and so flavoursome, I didn’t want it to end.
S. B.
Good food & amazing service !! Love the option for small serves (never seen it anywhere else). Service was really quick as well. Would definitely recommend this place.
A. G.
As a Hobart local this sensational cafe has remained a favourite . Creative menu and great value for money. Staff are genuinely lovely particularly Gemma who is so warm and welcoming and sincerely inviting in her natural manner .
P. K.
Just popped in here for lunch - only our 2nd day in Hobart. What a lovely surprise- super friendly staff and amazing food!! - awesome work guys!!
J. M.
Criterion St Cafe continues to impress with one of the best coffees in Hobart, love the busy vibe and the snacks are to die for!
J. Y.
Coffee is good! Muffins are fresh everyday. They do brunch as well. Love this place, especially sitting outside and enjoying the weather. Not only that, even their service is outstanding!
Location is easy to find, in CBD. Only few minutes to supermarket or shopping center.
D. K.
Great food, great coffee and great service. The corn fritters were amazing!
A. P. S.
Nice laneway Cafe for a Sunday morning. Good coffee, delicious French toast and good service.
M. A.
Mushrooms and goat cheese was delicious. Great food and excellent service. Will definitely go back when am down in Hobart.
A. C.
honestly one of the best atmosphere’s i’ve ever been in, cafe-wise. food was good, drinks were good, service were good, everything: good. i hope to go back again :)
G. M.
Went there for brunch with friends. Really great food and coffee, and lovely friendly staff.
K. E.
Great breakfast this morning at the Criterion Cafe, hidden away in a city side street. The cafe was full (always a good sign) but the service remained great and we had no trouble getting a table. The staff were super friendly with a ‘cheery skater’ vibe. Food and coffee were good and prices fair. We will be back!
G. P.
The sourdough bread was the highlight, I believe it was from Pigeon Hole. For $4.50 for a side (half of a small avocado), it would have been nice to have a slice of lemon or something a bit fancier with it. We are eating out at a cafe after all. There was nothing special about the food. The cappuccino was a bit milky for me.
Z. W.
Excellent breakfast and coffee and even better staff . Verry welcoming atmosphere just like home but better coffee, will 100% be back in my travels.
B. P.
Even when at their busiest, the food is always amazing and the staff are great. I love that you can get smaller sizes options too
E. T.
Very nice Cafe, nice food, very friendly & joyful service staff. Prices are reasonable too.
K. R.
Service, food and location are all incredible! The spring onion and potato pancakes with pulled pork... Delicious!!! And everything else looked really good! Fresh and healthy food, great variety/options and really friendly staff... What more can you ask for?
B. K.
I was here two consecutive mornings. The food was great and staff was friendly and helpful - my wife and I ordered one set of breakfast to share, and they even separate it to two plates evenly. ALSO great place also to drink coffee and chill out in the late morning! Can be crowded.
J. S.
Have been here several times. Always has a moderate crowd ( not too busy but not empty). Service is fast. Food is tasty and they are really good at accommodating groups. The new planters outside make the patio sitting really lovely.
K. B.
Always great, the hollandaise is a wonderful mix of everything good and they’re coffee has never been anything but refreshing. There seems to be a wonderful connection between regular customers and the staff which is wonderful to be around.
Overall, an adorable little cafe that’s a perfect slice of Hobart
J.
The most succulent brekkie in all of the Tasmania? Yea
A. -.
Went 9am Monday, got a table for four straight away as it was not too busy. Fast and pleasant service and serving sizes were really solid. Really tasty food and good coffee. Pulled pork waffles were excellent though maybe a little too much Hollandaise!
C. L.
Excellent food and coffee
E. P.
Great service and coffee! I'll be back soon.
K. H.
Amazing food and helpful attentive staff. Was very busy but we never felt rushed and didn't have to wait long. Really enjoyed brunch here!
R. M.
We have been staying in Hobart for the past 5 days and discovered this hidden gem on the first day . We have slowly worked our way through the entire breakfast menu. The food is to die for and the service is friendly and efficient . Highly recommended !
Y. W.
Food was absolutely delicious, especially the haloumi salad. Chilled out vibes and friendly staff- great for a slow weekend brunch :)
J. C.
Had a delicious breakfast at Criterion street cafe!
Big cheese with salmon and bacon.
M. T.
Enjoyed the breakfast, a generous serving with scrambled eggs cooked to perfection. The coffee beans were really over-roasted, I'd suggest trying to source better beans.
W. M.
Such a reliable cafe. Wonderful staff who have been looking after us for years. Coffee perfect for me and delicious savoury muffins that sell out fast. Great vibe with a strong local following.
G. B.
I received a wonderful meal. Perfect eggs plenty of bacon however could've had more toast. The issue comes with the consistency. My eggs were good but then one of my friends received two hard boiled eggs instead of poached and another got a perfect egg and a softboiled egg. Service was excellent though so I'd still recommend.
M. B.
Yum waffles, coffee was only just warm but was offered for them to be redone with a smile :)
P. L.
Currently using Zimmah Tattooed Nun coffee, a great choice. Had French Toast and a muffin, both excellent as well. Was so very humid when I entered, almost turned around - perhaps their aircon/filter was having a bad hair morning. Definitely recommend checking this place out.
M. C.
The staff here are so friendly and accommodating, and the service is outstanding. Solid coffees, as well. My go-to cafe in Hobart!!
J. R.
The lovely staff do a great job at making you feel welcome. The menu is full of creative and delicious food of decent sizes. Always a lovely spot to pop into when in the city
N. T.
Friendly staff, sophisticated dishes, and great coffee. What more could you ask for? Highly recommend, one of the best cafes in Hobart
T. N.
The CSC waffle was brilliant with different flavors (mixture of contrast flavors).
R. B.
Wonderful chai tea, delicious savory muffin the best we have ever had. Even my sister from Melbourne said it was the best muffin she had ever had, and she is fussy. Hope to visit again soon.
B. J.
This busy cafes menu hasn't changed in years, whilst the food is fairly reliable the service is hit and miss. Young man working seemed more interested in talking to his friends who came in then serving tables.
S. G.
Always a fantastic menu, great food.
B. S.
Amazing coffee and amazing customer service, and they're so quick at getting orders out! One of the lovely ladies that works here remembered my order after only one visit! My favourite cafe to stop in and grab a coffee before work, always a warm welcome from the incredibly friendly staff members ♡
T. R.
Beautiful coffee and the best blueberry muffin ever! Moist and delicious. We enjoyed lingering here and planning our trip to the wild west coast. Worth a visit.
J. T.
Great breakfast and coffee - corn fritters and porridge. Almond latte was spot on.
N. H.
Friendly staff , great coffee , delicious porridge ! My go too during my stay in Hobart !
B. N.
Exceptionally high quality cafe.
One of the best coffees I've had. Strong, smooth, unique taste.
The warm haloumi salad was absolutely delicious, with well thought-out flavour combinations and ingredients. Bursting with flavour.
Highly recommend
B. H.
This cafe is amazing. We came several times during our stay, trying lots of different things on the menu and it was all fantastic. Coffee was also delicious. My only feedback would be that the service was a little abrupt. Still a 5 star cafe :)
W.
We stumbled across this place after heading to the Farm Gate market on Sunday morning and what a find!! I ordered the corn & chilli fritters with haloumi and a fresh tomato, avocado, lime and coriander salsa plus crispy bacon on the side - WOW! It was absolutely delicious and set me up perfectly for a wander round the market. Thanks very much for such a deliciously tasty brunch guys 👍🤤
K. M.
We went here for brunch and had the French Toast with bacon and tomato, it was the best I've ever had, toasted in yummy cheeses. We'll be back again for sure!
a. h.
Really friendly. Perfect coffee and fresh food after work. Been meaning to come here for ages ! So glad my memory was jogged by lovely gemma who had been today... as it's more important than ever to support local ❤❤
J. F.
Tolerable coffee, and decent food
A. H.
I dropped in for a quick coffee and left hours later with a full stomach. The seductive aromas coming from the kitchen were just too much. The savoury french toast was incredible. Wonderful, attentive staff. Do yourself a favour and check it out.
J. W.
I took my wife out for breakfast for our first taste of Criterion Street Cafe! Your establishment is highly recommended by everyone I ask. The place was pumping and the servers were doing an admirable job of helping everyone. I ordered the French toast (which was exceptional) and my wife ordered the mushroom special. About 3/4 of the way through the mushrooms my wife pulled a medium-length, coarse, black hair out of the mushroom mix. We've both worked in hospitality and understand these things happen. So, we tried to inform the waiter in a circumspect manner. He was duely apologetic and offered to rectify the issue. He offered to remove the meal from our bill, but we were happy just taking off the coffees as the food was great.
When we went to pay, who we assume was the manager on duty (taking payments and working the coffee machine) insinuated that we may have put the hair in the food ourselves as 'everyone in the kitchen is blonde'. She had dark hair, there was a guy with dark hair, and another lady who was serving with shorter dark hair. She then stated that '... But I guess we can take care of the meal,' as if she was doing us a favour (when we already offered to pay for it). In all, it seemed very poorly handled by her, and exceptionally rude considering the situation. Upon speaking with other locals, it seems this person is the owner and has treated other similarly.
M. L.
Had a great meal here. Jumbo sized lamb sandwich was super tasty and the coffee was excellent. Fast, friendly service. Would recommend!!
P. W.
Speedy service, massive portions, great value, good coffee and plenty of seating. Why not 5 stars? My poached egg was hard which meant my whole breakfast was a little dry. That's partly my fault given what I ordered so maybe I'm just nitpicking... 4.5 stars? Definitely recommended!
l.
Friendly staff, seating upstairs as well as downstairs and outside.
Good coffee and open on public holidays.
Bit of a line to get a table, definitely if you have a larger group.
Food looks and smells great, although I only went in for a coffee.
Con:
Looked like they only had one toilet so they had a line up.
M. M.
Funky coffee shop in downtown Hobart!
J. M.
Seriously good food. Highlights include the haloumi salad and pork sword, and it's worth checking the specials boards. Very good coffee. The service is friendly, but can sometimes be a but slow, because it's often very busy.
C. T.
Great coffee, fantastic food, and really amazing staff. :)
S. D.
Good coffee and well-priced. Good place to visit if you're heading to the farmers market on a Sunday.
D. M. C.
Always good here. Coffee is good, gf options are delicious. Worth a visit.
p. s.
Must have breakfast here if you are in Hobart .

As I traveller I steer away from franchise and chain cafes. Small local business owners operate an entirely unique setup. They anticipate every customer to be their first even if you’re a regular.
Delicious food with generous portion sizes. Thank you 👌🏽😁
Service : 5/5
Engaging Conversation: 5/5
Food: 5/5
Coffee: 5/5
Experience & Atmos: 5/5
Recommend: Highly
NB: check how many tables are available during busy periods of each day. If you don’t mind waiting, you’ll be back 🌹🙏🏽 enjoy your experience. 😁

Found the best hidden little gem in all of Hobart while holidaying here!! I wish I found this earlier as good cafes in hobart seem to be hard to come by. If you can grab a table outside and watch as everyone walks by the busy cafe and asks you what you're having because it all looks divine! I had the CSC Waffles w/ caramelized banana bacon, caramel sauce and cream. H E A V E N on a plate. 10/10 recommend to everyone
X. B.
There were not many breakfast places open during Xmas time so we sort of ran into this place while hopping around. Loved the food here. Coffee was great. Friendly staff.
E. W.
In a one week Hobart stay, we did breakfast at Criteron three times... that’s how good it is! Super generous serve for the pulled pork and the lemon butter is to die for - also a massive serve at a reasonable price
A. J.
Ice coffee and corn fritters for lunch were delicious, but it was so loud in such a small room. They need to get acoustic tiling or something because I couldn't hear the person sitting half a meter from me.
S.
Amazing coffee, service and food. Definitely recommend a visit if you are in Hobart.
S.
Nice coffee and breakie! Enjoyed the good weather too as there are seats available at outside too
R. L.
Great food, excellent service.
H. N.
Cute cafe with tasty food! Staff was super happy to help replace parts of meals with dietary requirements (thanks Olivia!). This is a big deal for me because it can sometimes be stressful and awkward.
B. F.
Great brunch spot. Although a good coffee I feel their coffee standard has slipped a little the last 12 months or maybe standard in Hobart has risen.
E. G.
I have tricky dietary requirements, and I didn't check and ordered the wrong thing. When I realised, they took it off my order (despite it being my mistake!) and worked with me to make something I could have. It was a very good experience.
M. K.
Beautiful food and super fast service so I could have lunch while on break from work.
N.
One of Hobart trendy cafe's. And that's saying a lot because there are many trendy cafes in Hobart. Good service, and they are open on Sunday's for that post run Sunday breakfast.
T. C.
Good service. Delish food (corn fritters). Very relaxed vibe. Recommend.
J. S.
We stumbled on this place looking for Cultura around the corner. Criterion has a great vibe, pleasant staff, and a great menu of food (Did not try any but menu looked oroginal and food coming out to others looked great. Place is a bit small but they manage to make it feel relatively big with a large central communal table. Also has window seating and outdoor seating.
B. H.
Great coffee and food, reasonable prices, hyggie feel.
E.
Went there with a friend for lunch and had amazing French Toast with bacon and tomato. I will definitely be getting it again.
T. L.
Great coffee and breakfast and lovely staff. I recommend here if you are in town. Opens at 7 too
S. G.
Food & coffee was delicious and service was great. All round great cafe.
J. T.
Amazing food - the pork sword could actually be the best breakfast in Hobart!
Great staff and great coffee. A must.
A. B.
Wonderful staff and delicious food. Some of the outdoor stools leave a bit to be desired in the way of structural integrity, but I assume that is part of the charm.
k. o.
I've only ever had amazing food here. My favourite cafe in Hobart. Top quality coffee, service, ambience and location.
M. S.
Excellent coffee
Great friendly fast service
No idea why a Google search did not show this great cafe
Worth a visit or two
V. N.
Amazing halloumi salad and iced coffee that tasted like well brewed coffee as the base. Everyone was very friendly and the music choice was perfect!
J. A.
Nice and enjoyable egg and bacon wi trh mushroom on toast. Upstairs area was good. Service was a little inattentive at times but otherwise great.

I regret that I only have five stars to give. Great and diverse menu, get the (offensive thing on menu that Google is filtering). They also served me the best affogato I've ever had.
A. S.
Disappointing. The poached eggs were under done (runny whites) and watery. Coffee was ok, but on the weaker side. Very basic fare.
A. H.
Greeted kindly in a nice casual way, very prompt service. Great coffee and perfect portion of bacon and eggs.
S. G.
