Macquarie Street Foodstore serves up honest food with a strong social justice vibe. This locals’ haunt in South Hobart seemed the perfect place to think about the need for visitors like myself to travel lightly upon other peoples’ homes. With a couple of dog-friendly outdoor tables set up so diners all face the pretty cottages over the road, this suburban café is an order and pay at the counter affair. We’re quickly set up with coffees – in my case a quite serviceable Latte ($3.70) ordered strong with an Extra Shot ($0.50) to help cut through the excesses of the night before. The menu, which is dietary requirement friendly, really points you at the Foodstore Savoury Breakfast ($21). All three of my party ordered it, so nobody felt like they were missing out. Piled upon a giant corncake, is a mound of gently cooked yellow scrambled eggs and a generous amount of bacon. Two grilled tomatoes and some rocket give the golden dish a splash of colour, along with a generous pour of good Hollandaise. The hash brown eats more like an Indian potato cake (aloo tikka), adding in some extra stodge to ensure you won't walk away hungry... if you can walk away at all. Yes, this is tasty but simple, stick-to-your-ribs tucker presented in the generous portion size that Hobartians seem to prefer.

My mum and I have been coming here for a while now. It’s a cosy, warm and homey atmosphere! And the dishes are so delicious and inexpensive compared to other cafes (we personally reccomend the big salad with chicken, the smashed avo and then focaccia) if Mike Dutta can run a cafe this well he can run the whole city !

I loved this little cafe. The food always had a nice healthy twist, but delicious. Great for for vegetarians. I think it was a family run business. There was one older gentleman working there with a long great beard. Didn't catch his name but he was very warm friendly person. The young lady who eas always there when I went in had a smile that could light up any room. The great food, the warm people, and the relaxed vibe of the place made for a great way to start my day.

Amazing food. Stayed in Hobart for a week and went to a few different restaurants, but not one was a match to the unique and high quality food here. Everything is deliciously homemade. Many different vegetarian and vegan options. The portions are quite generous, for a very good price and short waiting time. Cannot do better than this. Also, the owner is an awesome person!

I love the Foodstore. The $12 specials are such great value with lovely nourishing meals and great coffee/tea. The staff are so community focused, friendly and welcoming. I work locally and they always have my meal out in a flash. The vegan specials are great too. Grab a seat upstairs if you can - chill out and enjoy the vibe.

Serving sizes are generous, coffee is good - although I'd suggest getting a double shot or a 3/4 if you're ordering a flat white or a latte cause they are on the milky side. One of the best breakfasts we’ve eaten in Tassie! This quirky local cafe had great food and friendly, efficient service. Hubby had Bircher muesli that wasn’t too sickly sweet, and I had poached eggs with a side of roast veggies. Servings were generous. Highly recommended.
