Comments of Stanley Hotel Bistro

Wow what a meal, we had salt n pepper calamari for entrees which was fresh, juicy and tender, cooked to perfection. the salad with it was amazing also. The crumbed scallops were fresh and well cooked. The scallop pie had a beautiful buttery pastry, ample scallops and the curry was delicious, especially dipped with fries. well done to chef and staff, great job.

Stunning location with ‘The Nut’ just behind it, and one of the best steak dinners I’ve ever had!
Unfortunately, the restaurant was booked out so I sat in the pub area on a Friday night - it took a long time to be noticed/served, and there was a lot of raucous, uncomfortable, drunken behaviour.
The staff that I did deal with were lovely though - I’d just strongly recommend booking the restaurant ahead of time!
H. B.
Delicious meals. The scallops were very fresh and tender. Beef Ragu and pumpkin gnocchi were both very rich and flavourful, with excellent fresh pasta. Crème brulé was excellent. The restaurant seemed to be the only place open after 7pm in Stanley on a Friday night.

Great food, came out fresh and hot. Lovely staff checking up on us and the meal. Very welcoming. We had the oysters both natural and cooked. Chicken snitz (had the peppercorn sauce, which tasted abit pepperminty), seafood pasta, pot pie which was a big hit aswell as the Christmas truffle and Nutella cookie
C. M.
The best steak I've ever had in my life! Was cooked exactly as I ordered, very tender, seasoned well & the whole meal tasted amazing!!! Dessert was delicious too. The staff were lovely & was very quick service even though the bistro was nearly full. It was our favourite meal in Tasmania.
M. C.
Went for lunch there, surprinsgly nice quality food made from local ingredients & very well presented, lots of options for local beers and wine. The dishes were simple and hearty, so dont come with the gourmet Michelin stars expectation, but lovely overall. They also had some vegan options which is always nice and appreciated. Staff was super friendly. Yes it does get booked out at night. We tried different food places in Stanley but this one stood out as the best.
J. K.
Classic country Bistro pub - but wow what exceptional steaks - very generous size and very very tender - great flavours. All dishes very fresh, friendly staff and views over bay area. Good reasonably priced wine list.
K. E.
Very nice dinner in a comfortable and clean bistro. We were welcomed by a charming and very busy maître de and the service from then on was consistently good.
The menu was great - a staple pub menu supplemented by a great specials board. The steak was local and very good; the fish was not what we first ordered but a good replacement. The meals were not cheap but quality was good.
It’s nothing fancy but good food and good service in a wonderful place. You will need to make a reservation!!
K. Y.
Nice restaurant and pub both inside and outside. The place was very busy and packed since it seems to be the only place in town to eat on Monday to Wednesday. The staff were very nice and accommodated me from a 730 to 6pm booking as I wanted to have enough time to go up the Nut at sunset. Unfortunately, due to how busy it was, my order (the fish of the day) took far longer than expected. I don’t expect fast food but it took nearly an hour for my order to come out. I had to take my order to go. Saying that, the food was delicious even if I was scarfing it down from a plastic Tupperware on a bench on the Nut. I also had an order of oysters which was fresh and excellent! Pricey food but excellent quality. Would eat here again if no longer in a rush.

Fabulous food. Walaby shank and lemon brulea were absolutely delicious.
M. E.
Not bad seafood, and bread with butter and herb is great, just too light serving for $60 seafood plate.seafood platter in argosy are so much generous with their serving for nearly half the price cost..
S. P.
One of the best steaks I've had to date, perfectly cooked all the way through. Great portion sizes and all round very tasty, definitely recommend.
V.
A nice night I didn’t make the same mistake as in Hursey so I ordered the natural cray as these guys also double cook their crayfish if you order it in garlic or mornay !! The oysters Kilpatrick were brilliant as was their melt in your mouth scallops
The steaks that came out looked amazing
Staff were friendly and attentive one who took our money, filled with her own self importance, all in all a nice night and will try the steak tonight
J. J.
What an awesome gem with beautiful views. Stanley is drop dead gorgeous.
The restaurant and pub are cosy, with a nice fireplace and attentive staff. Sam in particular was amazing at recommending a meal, checking up on us and satisfying even the challenging wine requests - Pipek was delicious!! Thank you ✨
P.s. The seafood chowder is a must try!
P.p.s. You might spot some little penguins on a post dinner walk too :)
M. L.
I think I had the best seafood pasta I have had in a while! Great service and food.
N. L.
Came with high expectations because of the Google review however we were disappointed with the food. Best food item was cob loaf and the delicious garlic and herb butter. Service was excellent. Good atmosphere.
The t-bone steak was almost a well-done when asked a medium rare, making it rather dry. On top, the steak was over salted which makes it very difficult to palette with the mustard bread crumbs top. Not sure why the choice of basil as garnish as the flavours clashed.
Slow cooked crispy pork was crispy and soft, the cider jus was so weird that non of us touched it. Once again not sure the role of basil garnish as lettuce basil is a very strong flavoured herb.
Schnitzel was crispy however needed seasoning, the dish overall lacked flavour.
M. C.
We ordered three entrees (bruschetta, Arancini, baked camembert) and a main (salt and pepper squid) after the fish of the day was served with potato and bacon croquettes (we don’t eat pork). Which was unfortunate as I was looking forward to fish. All meals were served quickly and with excellent service. Could not fault the meals or service at all. Just felt they were a little overpriced.
A.
Highly recommend! Celiac friendly with super helpful staff who happily detailed what meals could be made gluten free and what changes could be made to accomodate celiacs. Not long wait times for food and the food was amazing! Very delicious and perfectly cooked. Thank you to all the amazing staff and the great chefs for a lovely night out. Would just recommend that you book ahead if you are planning on visiting, as they were fully booked when we visited on a weeknight!

To be transparent, I did not eat at the Bistro, however I did drink at the pub, and what a cool Australia local Stanley experience.
The beer was cold, the staff where nice and the locals where welcoming. As long as you add value , they will add value to your day.
I loved it and was so happy I popped in for a couple of beers.
H. W.
Incredible juicy steak for $42. DELISH 😋

Food is great. Taste of the ocean had scallops, oysters, octopus, squid, 2 fish fillets and chips and salad. All cooked perfect. Excellent. Steak was amazing also.
N.
Called in for a beer while in Stanley, great location with a few local beers to choose from with a nice decking area out the back with a view over Stanley.
Enjoyed a local beer while the sunset, great way to end a night.
Y. M.
Wow !! YUMMY food and great staff.
A small selection of dishes.
The Chief sure can cook!
C. N.
Love it here. Cozy lounge and bar area with woodfire, tv, music box, pool table and old photos of the town. You can see the nut out the windows. Always found the staff to be pleasant and efficient. Food was just lovley and well priced with great wait staff and fast service despite being quite busy.
J. M.
Had the wallaby shank. First time, and it was delicious. Followed by the brownie for dessert. Hope to go back again. Lovely venue.
s. b.
Just had dinner on my own during a work trip, a local recommended this is where I eat. Abalone and blue eyed cod special as main. Seriously a 9/10. Well done guys. And i was full as bull after which is rare for me. Will be back.
R. B.
Absolutely brilliant steak, wonderful service. Delicious
T. C.
Definitely worth dining here! The food & the service was great! Wonderful offering in Stanley!
N. W.
Good pub atmosphere, and a good selection of wines. I had the fish of the day - trout, and it was delicious, however it was a bit pricey, and little on the small side.
L. C.
We had the fried Camembert and a chicken schnitzel, with the bread to start. Retired after dinner to the pub at the back. Great night.
D. T.
Food made with top quality local Tasmanian ingredients. The dishes are relatively simple but serve to highlight the sheer quality of the ingredients. Wine list consists of a good variety of - again - locally sourced product. Service is attentive for a hotel bistro.
If you're here in summer, book a week ahead, it's popular with both tourists and locals. In winter you can usually book on the day. Usually...
S. T.
Delicious steak and parma!
R. D.
Great little pub, friendly staff and great food! We also booked a room for the night which where very clean and great facilities. Highly recommend.
B. N.
Very nice place .staff very frendly.
Food is very nice.
J.
It was very busy when we arrived, definitely recommended to make a booking. We ordered the chicken schnitzel and two specials; pork belly and a fish dish. All dishes were great, a bit on the expensive side for a pub meal, but very good flavours and well cooked. Good choice of pub classics and more bistro style dishes.
B. T.
Delicious burger with a fantastic peanut butter porter accompliment
S. R.
I had a t-bone steak and it blew my mind! It was so thick, tasty and tender, I didn't even need a knife to eat it! This place rocks. I would like to suggest the excellent tempura mushrooms that came with my dish could be turned into a vegetarian-friendly dish in its own right, as my vegetarian partner only had one option to choose from on the menu. Why not offer the pea mash and other seasonal sides as a main too? Good work.
B. D.
One of the best seafood dinners we’ve had - ever. All the food we had was fresh, full of taste and well weighted. We had the baked camembert to start, shared the seafood plater, extra oysters and finished with the sticky date pudding. Would almost go back to Stanley again just for another meal there!
A. G.
The Night cold and crisp, the reservation joyful yet forced, the EFTPOS, broken. "Cash on hand?" Asks the helpful staff while guiding us to our corner abode. "No, I am a millennial" my unspoken answer for loose lips sink ships. From here we soaked up the local culture while sipping on some truly delectable reds. The menu? A bold leap towards a modernized pub. The feeling of fishermen swiftly delivering fresh fish as the chef quickly assesses the stock to create their daily specials. A lovely time soaking up the universal bistro feel. From here a quick walk to the luscious sands of Godfrey's beach. I can truly and whole heartedly say it was the best pub feed in all of Stanley.
D. C.
Superb meal but an undersized meal considering i payed $40.
If you came from the USA it would be considered an entree
s. t.
Meet up with friends from Qld for lunch and they all loved their meals, one commented it was the best fish and chips she ever had and my wife loves the aranchini balls, they also loved the view
I. G.
Jackpot, 1st class.
What others had said about the ambiance, courteous service, food presentation and taste is all true- perfection is what it is.
Well done Team Stanley Bistro!!! Very happy satisfied customers are we.
J. L.
Not your average pub! Pub fare done better than you could imagine, and exciting local ingredients used in amazing dishes. Wait staff were friendly and accommodating. Even when booked out, didn't feel crowded. Book ahead even if going with a small group on a week day. Abalone was small but perfect, salmon parcel and steak also perfect. Worth every penny and more. A must visit in Stanley.
r.
Nice dinner lobster and scallops,,brownie, plus Apple crumble 😄
M. A.
Had dinner here tonight. Tossing up between the lobster joint and the pub. The reviews for the pub looked better so we took a chance. Very friendly staff with great service. Good sized meals without being overly expensive. My wife had the seafood platter - it was great and fresh, and appropriately sized. I had the scotch fillet with all salad and no chips. They gave me extra salad - nice! Something that some pubs find too had for low carbers.
D. B.
Had the fish of the day (ling) so light cooked perfect. Other main was the stir fry meat was very tender. Started with a cob loaf. Finished with sticky date great meal , fast service
B.
Best under 10 kids menu we have come across!
J. A.
great service, superb food, insane views!!!
J. L.
The food we had in this hotel was truly excellent. I had the best seafood chowder I can remember and everything else was top class. The decor is nothing special, but the dishes we observed on other tables looked really good with large servings. The place was full on a Monday night so you would be advised to book.. Prices are reasonable and the table service efficient . Highly recommended.
G. H.
Fantastic Tucker..Cold Beer..Great service.
A. O.
Booked in for dinner on a quiet Wintery Saturday night with two hours notice. The Bistro was reasonably quiet at 7:30 with about half a dozen tables still in. Service was attentive, but not overbearing - we had no problem getting attention if we needed it. Food was lovely, and great to see such strong support for local produce.
Entree of Fried Camembert w/ Cranberry a hilarious memory of the 80's that just had to be done - I'm very glad we ordered it to share as two large wedges were delivered!
Main of Salt and Pepper Calamari was hands down the best we've had anywhere - absolutely melt-in-the-mouth. The Venison Sausages - again a huge serve, and very tasty.
No need for dessert... in fact a waddle up and down the street after was more in order!
I can see how it may be tough here when it's really busy - but it was lovely on the night we went and old fashioned pub service was just what we were in the mood for.
I. H.
have been here on a number of occasions the whole experiance is wonderfull. go visit u want be disappointed.
G. D.
The steak was superb, the fish was mediocre, and after spending $325, the minute we finished our last glass of wine( of many), we were asked to leave, because " they had people that had been waiting 1/2hr for our table."
We were not given a timeframe on booking, and were less than impressed to be rushed out the door the second we'd finished!!
r. R.
The crumbed scallops were absolutely perfect, quite a large serve and filling. My partner enjoyed the chicken parmy which he said was delicious with loads of vegetables. The bistro was very popular as many people were dining that evening, and the views were just great.
J. W.
Lovely staff and the seafood chowder was great
J. V.
Terrific food and pleasant friendly service. The Tasmanian-Scallop pie was sensational, very hearty and tasteful. The vegetarian tart was well cooked, puffy pastry and fresh (and actually delicious) salad. Topped off with good chips.
Would recommend!
R. M.
Excellent lobster. Our best meal in Stanley.
T. M.
Stopped in for lunch on a cold day in Stanley. Quiet but can see it would be a lovely atmosphere in such a historical pub. Quick beer in the front bar with it's great fireplace and country vibes.
Lunch in the bistro section. Fish of the day (Trout) and crumbed scallops - both really nice but would have been good to see something other than chips with F.O.T.D (mash maybe?)
Wine list is one of the better ones we found at a pub in the North West. Good selection of local drops is always good to see. Service was with a smile and happy to sort us out with a high chair for our little one.
C. S.
I totally enjoyed my sea run Trout. Presentation was great and the meal was as delicious as it looked. Definitely the best meal I had in this stunning sea side town.
M. S.
The food here is great. The fish was fresh and delicious. The lobster Mornay was amazing. The service is friendly and quick and the view from the verandah worth gazing at over a beer.
My daughter had a kids steak and raved about it.
S. S.
The general pub area is a bit grubby and dull.
But the bistro has good views and the food is delicious! Best squid we've eaten. Curry was yum too.
Staff are professional and friendly too.
B. S.
All in all the food was good but the portion sizes need reviewing as well as the customer service maybe a bit more attention to detail, off table service and going back to basics would benefit this place hugely.
I came here tonight with my boyfriend and a friend as we were traveling around Tasmania for 2 weeks. Being out last night we decided to treat ourselves to dinner. We spotted the local bistro the serves locally caught seafood, bingo there is dinner. We had a round in the public bar, which had a great vibe and got chatting to a few locals i had high hopes for the bistro because of how friendly the staff and locals were, unfortunately it wasn't. There was a sign hidden around the corner " please go to the bar before being seated" impossible to see before we had already sat down the waitress asking did we have a booking ? Tuesday night with only 4 tables full and just traveling though, um no ... Oh I guess I can fit you in, her tone was very undermining and condescending to be honestly blatantly rude. Which was not the best start to a country bistro. Firstly there was no table service for drinks you had to go to the bar to order odd when there were 4 waitresses and only 4 tables, anyho we had the garlic and herd bread to start that was beautiful soft and the butter was melt in your mouth. Both me and my friend order the salt and pepper squid as a main, it was cooked perfect very moist and juicy, but for the price of $26 it was 7 pieces of squid and a small garden salad, I'm not a huge eater but even I thought the portion size was small, my friend agreed with me and was tempted with desert because of the size but again the price stopped us. $14 for a pudding . my partner had the chicken snitzel with the pepper sauce, he says I was pretty stock standard but ok the serving size again was small. Our second waitress was lovely but there is that lack of attention to detail you expect from any bistro. I myself work in the hospitality industry and these are basic things we get picked up on . Waitress at the bar was lovely though knowledgeable of wine and food.
We spent $170 all up and to be honestly I will be trying somewhere else when I come past again X
All in all the food was good but the portions need reviewing as well as the customer service maybe a bit more attention to detail, off table service and greating.
A.
Great service and amazing/friendly staff. They accommodated for us being 20 minutes late on Saturday night and kept our table. We both had the chicken and camembert pot pies and veg, which were absolutely delicious. Quick service, value for money and friendly staff. Thanks Stanley Hotel
R. D.
Excellent steak! Freshly cooked veg, proper pub chips, salad had a good mix, proper mushroom chunks in the sauce and gravox free gravy! Excellent customer service and very prompt, we'll be back!
s. b.
myself and wife had a meal at the pub and it was tops as i am a motel and restaurant owner in a another part of tassy and we hold Australian no 1 AHA award for best restaurant in Australia, and for a pub meal it was right up there with us .
The wait staff was on the ball eye for detail and on the go all the time i was impressed
The price very good too
P. L.
If you are travelling to Stanley and are hungry make sure you ring ahead and book for the first sitting. You never know when there is a local birthday party on so just rocking in may see no early places left. Not so bad as if you have finished driving for the day you have some drinks by the fire while waiting. The Menu has good pub food offerings with seasonal specials and sometimes Chef specialities. Tap Beers and a good selection of wines available. Travelling and staying coastal always brings a hearty appetite and portion sizes reflect that on the menu. There is a lovely atmosphere in the Bistro and if the weather is fine , one can sit outside and catch the sunset.
M. O.
the food is great - from the starters to dessert. the chef makes a mean crème brûlée - as good as i've had anywhere. our salmon was cooked perfectly, the oysters fresh & sweet. the rib eye had run out so i can only imagine it's a cracker. we sat outside on the balcony, front corner & loved it!
B. C.
Spent both of our evenings in Stanley at the bistro. Could not reccomend it enough. Exceptional vegetables, chicken schnitzel and parmigiana with outstanding service.
L. C.
Would not return if staying longer .Overpriced meal, and undersized. Still waiting for rest of my fish and chips, 3 tiny fingers , 2 mouthfuls in each, after all was only Flake. When complained was shrugged of and laughed at.
When paying a high price you expect a little more, at least enough to know you have had a meal.

Yesterday (9th July, 2018) my family traveled to Stanley, and we decided to pop in to the Stanley Hotel Bistro. It's the first time I've been to this hotel, and I was pleasantly impressed by my experience. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was reasonably priced for the large serving you get, the hotel was clean and tidy, but most importantly to me the food was delicious. I chose to have the special pasta of the day - bolognese sauce with linguine. The pasta was perfectly seasoned and al dente, and the sauce was clearly slowly cooked for a long period. I've given the Stanley Hotel Bistro five stars out of five, because to me there wasn't any way the experience could have been improved upon. I will definitely return the next time I'm in Stanley.
D. E.
Lovely building, friendly staff and warm atmosphere. After ordering food it came incredibly quick and was some of the most delicious seafood my wife and I have ever had.
M. C.
Great atmosphere and friendly service. A real local.
J. R.
Good service and the meals was good...
V. B.
Staff very friendly. Fish and chips, too much batter on the fish. Pie and veg tasty and fresh. Lacked some ambience, we were there on a wet and cold evening though.
L.
Excellent food! Can recommend the bangers and mash and the Schnitzel. Make sure you book, it’s very popular!

My hubby and I were very impressed with this restaurant, the service was fantastic and the food was very fresh and tasty, hubby had the salt and pepper squid with salad which he really enjoyed and I had a vegetable green curry which was delicious, I am gf df vegetarian and it was great to dine somewhere where that offered me more than just a plain salad or a bowl of veggies.
J. S.
Food was great! Seafood platter to share was nice and perfect amount for two people. Nice view to go with the meal.
J. G.
