Great food and service. It’s one of the best vegetarian/vegan cafe in town. A must try if you are visiting Hobart.
J. T.
Delicious vegetarian brunch cafe with a decent selection of gluten free dishes + treats. The cornbread in particular is scrumptious!
However, I’ve dined here twice now and both times loved the food, but been underwhelmed with the service - they’re lovely, but both times we had issues with them getting our orders wrong, leaving things out, and taking a long time.
Also, we weren’t fans of the whoopie cookies, which are very dry/lack flavour, or the nutella donut, which barely has any nutella in it. While these things really did sour the experiences, the brunch food itself is enough to still warrant 4 stars.

If you could leave Hobart early on a cold morning, you probably want to do it with the taste of this cafe lingering on your palette.
We were looking for a vegan(ish)hipster cafe to ease us back to normal life and this one came with a cold drip contraption to boot.
We had the potato hash and chickpea omelette and both were very tasty. The hash could've been cooked more for a crispier texture but the tempeh was done well and it was filling and green with thr rocquette.
The chickpea omelette was lovely too, the texture was really nice, the rice filling was also delicious. The coriander salad really gave it a nice flavourful burst.
It's a lovely place that adds a lot to the neighbourhood.
K. C.
What a delightful little cafe! They make their own almond milk and everything on their menu is gluten free, including breads and pastries. So impressed! The corn bread is delicious and so is the brekkie Burger. Not sure how they do the silky egg, but it tastes fantastic!
D. B.
Fussy coffee lovers? Tis the right place! I get my Perfect chocolaty Mocha ☕️ here! (vegan + dark choc) 😍! Their Banana bread is Out of this World! Not overtly sweet 🙌! Having a Brunch here I would call a luxury😌, serving gf & vegan!! ❤️💚💛

Breakfast here is a success. Freshness of food and art in each elaboration. The atmosphere is very nice in a quiet and clean place. It's nice to be served by the staff, especially the girls, who don't stop smiling and are always attentive to each client. Good job!
M. K.
Amazing food! Pretty tasty and nice presentation. Everything is homemade. And the customer service is excellent, the waitress whom took our order was lovely (: we ordered the bruschetta and the corn bread.

I met up with a friend at Straight Up Coffee and Food on a Sunday just before lunchtime. I chose this place on the basis of it's Google Review and that it's not too far to walk from the CBD.
This cafe is located a block and a bit away from the CBD although there are a fair few free parking spots just outside, only because it's a Sunday. There are two tables outside, one looks like it can fit 4-6 people and another for two people. There are about 7 tables inside and it was pretty full when I went. I'll imagine it'll be pretty hard to find a table at peak hour here.
I ordered a latte and was given a jug of water after. This is great as Pot Cafe and Villino don't offer this service, and I think it should be mandatory as coffee makes you thirsty. A simple way to add value with minimal cost. The latte came looking very clear and distinct with a nice light brown backdrop. The latte art degradation test sailed through well with the degradation occuring three quarters of the way through. This allows customers to enjoy the art for most the duration with minimal bitterness when there is no longer any foam.
Overall, I recommend this place for really good latte as you'll definitely get a good coffee experience that also taste good! At this stage I would probably come here over Pot Cafe, Villino and Yellow Bernard which are previously popular options. You'll get better value here as well.

I wish I had discovered this place sooner on my trip home! Undoubtably the best plant-based menu in all of Hobart (I looked all over, but this wins hands down!). And 100% gf for me is an added bonus. The options for food are so original and delicious sounding- I took close to half an hour to decide! We opted for the chickpea pancake and the potato rosti - so we could each share. The presentation is top notch, serving size generous, and that makes value for money very very good. And on top of it all the staff are absolutely lovely and genuine. No sense of feeling rushed, or stressed, even though there were people waiting for tables in the rain! The coffee is also some of the best I’ve had in Hobart.
A.
Neat spot in downtown Hobart! I went first thing on a Saturday morning and was treated very nicely by the staff. The store itself is rather small, so if you go at a prime time be mindful that you might have to sit outside or take it home with you. I liked the rusty setup/look inside! Made for a great way to start out my morning. Recommended if you're in the area.
R.
I've been to this spot twice. The coffee is great and the food is even better. You can easily grab a coffee and any of their freshly baked goods to go or you can dine in: let me tell you that you won’t be disappointed either way. This is A pleasantly non-pretentious restaurant offering creative vegetarian options full of flavor that are wonderfully presented.
J. C.
Located on the edge of the CBD is this fantastic joint. A fantastic assortment of vegetarian and vegan offerings. Each meal is nutritious, colourful, exciting, and delicious.
G. P.
Nice coffee but unfortunately I must have ordered the wrong breakfast item. The corn bread was more like a crumbly cake. Instead of trying to make their own corn bread, they would be better to buy it in from Skala's Bakery who do an excellent corn bread.
S.
Delicious food - all gluten free and vegetarian! Great to have a place where there is no gluten on the menu at all.
Friendly staff and excellent range of food and drinks.
J. V.
Bit disappointed with the food here after reading all the great reviews. The ramen looked amazing but was luke warm. The pumpkin dish and the bakery treats were pretty good though
R. L.
Gluten free cafe! The feeling of being able to order whatever you want in a bakery/cafe is amazing!!! I had waffles for breakfast - yep, waffles ! I left with a donut, gingerbread man and a pretzel!
Paid parking in the street, but free before 8.30am.
S. J.
Very happy to find so many delicious vegan options! I love the simple, kitsch vibe and the treat cabinet left me feeling very spoilt. Lovely cup of soy chai, too.
D. O.
Long wait (had to top up the parking meter), staff not super organised regarding who'd been waiting for tables, bland coffee. Sauteed greens were ok but wasn't hot when received, gf did not rate the egg / haloumi option.
T. S.
Funky cafe. There was an instant buzz and feeling of energy here as soon as I walked in. The counter and coffee machine are right at the front. It’s activity plus from the door onwards and that felt mighty good. I like the style here which appears to emphasize retro. Mine was only a quick stop this morning to grab a takeaway long black. It was a very sound brew. The staff are good here. They look the part and they’re up and about. Good place. The most interesting I’ve come across yet in my travels.
M. L.
Came here for the food twice during my short stay in Hobart.. food, service and ambience was delightful! Would recommend to anyone, with or without dietary requirements! The vegan potato hash, and waffles were delicious. Thank you!

One of the really cool things I have found with living in the heart of a city is having access to the best cafes. Having lived in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and now Hobart I can really appreciate the finer things of fine dining. Just down the road from where I live is Straight Up. I dropped in here for breakfast one morning. The staff were engaging and knew their stuff. You see, they have to know their stuff because Straight Up is a "no flesh" cafe. So you wont get bacon with your eggs. That suits me because I am vegetarian. Anyway, I waffle. The place is great, and as all carnivores know you can eat great at vegie places. Check it out.
J. T.
Delicious vegan and gluten free food and very friendly staff. Just be prepared for a wait to get a table of your there on the wrong day.
J. D.
My ace local. They know coffee back to front. Best Aero in Tas. They roast the beans, they know quality. The food is always FRESH & delicious, heaps of vegan options - the bakery range is expanding (love me some vagel). The staff are pro & make a great queer friendly space. Vego heaven.
M. H. V.
Yummy and delish sweet breakfast. It is abit overpriced but one good spot to come for breakfast in CBD
P. S.
What a gem. Inspired vegetarian food, you’re not missing a thing.
Perfect coffee too!
D. K.
This cafe is amazing. Staff are friendly and they know their coffee. Food is also top notch! Make sure this one is on your list when visiting Hobart :).
S. F.
I loved this place! I'm gluten free and even though I live in San Francisco, I struggle finding good bread products. This place blew me away! Yesterday we picked up some bread for a picnic and it was amazing. We tried the focaccia and seed bread. Each had the moisture that a lot of gluten free bread lacks.
B. M.
This is one of the best establishments in Hobart IMO. The fact that it is a haven for coeliacs aside, the care and deduction they put into their coffee is enough to have me a very least weekly. The fact my wife can eat everything on the menu, which is all delicious, is just amazing.
L. J.
I love this place pretty lay back in the middle of town. Good cuisine, healthy and good flavours. The service is with a smile :)
K. D.
The staff are so lovely and helpful, the food is reasonably priced, vegetarian friendly, and gluten free and absolutely delicious!
I recommended this place to a couple friends and they loved it too!
T. C.
Fantastic food, coffee & service. Vegetarian and gluten free. Cold drip coffee available too.
C. G.
Excellent food and the service is great, for once you can get a healthy breakfast. We ordered the almond milk coffee and the almond milk wasn’t to our taste, without us even asking the waitress asked us if we liked it, as we didn’t she replaced it with Macadamia milk.
D. L. (.
Loved the greens very much exactly what i expected and hummus was tasty. Really good coffee. Loved it!
S. B.
Delightful place. Menu is 100% vegan and vegetarian, coffee was fantastic, staff are brilliant.
E. M.
Vegetarian and 100% gluten free cafe that roast their own coffee beans. The coffee and food are really good.
M. J.
Gluten free dreams are made of this!!
A wonderful, welcoming space with lovely staff and delicious meals. Perfect batch brew coffee served in cute cups, haloumi garlic brioche to die for- can’t wait to come back soon!!
R. L.
Very Retro with a great menu we had the Fruit and nut loaf. Great service and very friendly service.
R. H. (.
My favourite cafe in Hobart, all gluten free options and a good variety of baked goods and savoury dishes with lovely presentation. The chai is great.
T. L.
The coffee was nice, I loved the coffee art but the scrambled eggs and potato has was DIVINE. I was so sad that I couldn't finish my meal. 10/10 would recommend
N. N.
Great gluten free bread, I had the foccacia with butter only it was that enjoyable.
Coffee made with love for sure, it was smooth.
Coming back for the choc waffles next
A. B.
Incredible menu and super friendly staff. Would recommend omelet or corn bread and halloumi. Best cafe in Hobart hands down.
P. B.
The food is very good, enjoyable even if you are not a vegan or vegetarian (I am neither) and I highly recommend this place for breakfast or lunch.
The bread, cakes, slices etc. they make are also good. You can get gluten free stuff including loaves of bread.
I used to get the hot chocolate daily as it is not overly sweet and i found you could really taste the cocoa.
Coffee also seems to be really good.
The staff are really nice.
They are always seem to be open on public holidays which is really useful as my usual places (which are closer to me) aren't open on these days.
Nearby parking isn't really an issue. But I like to be able to park like right outside and that's not always available, it's my only problem going to this place.
C. O.
The vibe of this place feels eco friendly and chill. The furniture adds to the vibe with the green and orange of the 70s.
It's not just gluten free, it is also delicious. While a lot of places increasingly have gluten free options, all the baked goods here are gluten free. This means no accidental gluten slice on your place!
I had the corn bread with haloumi and avocado. It was delicious. Haloumi was perfectly cooked as was the scrambled eggs.
Most importantly the staff were friendly and down for a chat!
A. R.
Very friendly staff and nice service. Love the food options (vegetarian & Vegan).
R. S.
Really great baked options to eat in and take away. Love the completely gluten free menu.
The potato hash was fantastic. Tasted great, filling, would choose it again.
The porridge was ok. The baked apple was divine but more flavour variety would have been good. Such as some nuts or seeds sprinkled on top.
Loved the muffin. Most and packed with flavour. Bruffin was nice but could have done with a little more going on. Pretzel was yummy!
Coffee was good too. We hope we can make it back soon.
A. R.
Lovey coffee with great food. Cosy places with friendly staff.
E. R.
Best cafe in Australia. The only place I've found that is 100% coeliac safe. Most cafes have 1 or 2 gluten free options, but here I can choose anything off the menu without worrying about there being any gluten cross contamination. Good service. Delicious food and fresh squeezed fruit juices. I also love that they do so much of their own pickling of vegetables. 10/10
R. T.
Great gluten free options and great coffee. Love the friendly, bustling atmosphere and service. I loved popping in for a coffee and a snack on my way into town. The unique mural adds a quirky and distinctive vibe to this cafe.
O. F.
Great coffee and GF food :)
A. H.
Best coffee we’ve had in Tassie so far (our first stop in Hobart, after a week travelling south from Launceston). Plenty of good options on the menu. We ordered the potato hash and orange+blueberry waffles for brekkie, both great.
Coeliac friendly kitchen and the entire menu is gluten free!
Recommend.
C. M. C.
Great menu, and tasty coffee! Def recommending it
B. H.
A 100% GF café? My Gluten Intolerant lunching companions were ecstatic, ate with the same delight as everyone else and bought a magnificent loaf of bread afterwards. Returned the next day to try further tastiness on the menu. No hope of expanding nationally, Straight Up???
L. A.
Gluten free, vegetarians and vegans rejoice! This place you can eat with ease and eat EVERYTHING on the menu... Not just the token offerings at a regular cafe. Such great service, and you can buy a whole loaf of gf bread which is delish. I wish I lived here and could go every day!
A. D.
What a delightful little cafe! They make their own almond milk and everything on their menu is gluten free, including breads and pastries. So impressed! The corn bread is delicious and so is the brekkie Burger. Not sure how they do the silky egg, but it tastes fantastic
A. A.
I’m having a delicious savoury pocket very airy and it has smoky flavour on it. I also had jam-packed doughnuts and chai latte. The staff was friendly and it has good atmosphere and the service was quick .. highly recommended for breakfast..
D.
When you are coeliac eating out can be a pain in the butt. Sometimes at best you get a couple of choices on a menu. This place is completely gluten free. Everything sounds divine. I had the corn bread with eggs, avo and halloumi- beautiful! The coffee is great too. They even do lactose free. I shall be back all week to try the rest!
M. T.
Best breakfast hands down for the dietarily challenged and anyone who just appreciates good yummy clean food! Heaps of vegan options as well as obviously being GF and the staff are legends. We had two rounds of breakie and totally forgot to pay for the second part. Called up later to pay and they said “it’s on us”! GF angels 🤩 Also we chow through the super seedy bread only a daily basis. Delish.
R. R.
Warm inviting and unpretentious. Great staff and nice menu. My wife and I went in on a whim and glad we did .
N. S. (.
Great variety of vegan food, definitely suggest trying the chickpea omelette, so tasty! Thanks!
M. Y.
This is out regular go-to for work breakfasts. Everything is gluten-free, and still super tasty. The staff are all so friendly and the hot chocolate is a must. Highly recommend going!
E. M.
Best coffee (and best baristas) in town. Always a good breakfast here and not shy with their portion size. Delicious. Will be back.
J. H.
The perfect local cafe - chill and friendly, with great food and coffee. They try and make everything from scratch, including the almond milk! The potato hash with mushrooms was delish, and there’s something for everyone
C.
Amazing staff, brilliant food and quality coffee every single time. Highly recommend!
J. F.
We head straight to Straight Up as soon as we hit Hobart. Extraordinary food, good prices, awesome coffee, and 100% gluten free which for coeliacs is just amazing. Oh, and the staff are genuinely lovely! Basically a perfect cafe.
C. P.
It hurts to give Straight Up less than five stars, but it only loses points for (kinda, sorta, sometimes) underwhelming meals. Perhaps it's elevated expectations, but I never *love* the food. However, it's gold for Hobart's GF crowd. Their baked goods taste like the real thing (though, don't expect them to keep), the super seedy loaf facilitates your GF brekkie goals, and the coffee/drinks are v. v. good. Trying to get a seat any time other than first thing in the morning or late arvo is suuuuper hard, but that's an indication of the cult-like following of this tasty local fave.
J. K.
If you are coeliac, you know the feeling - you enter a cafe, smell the bread and - without mich hope - ask if they have anything gluten free... Well, here I had to ask three times as I couldn’t believe the answer: everything they have is gluten free. I bought a bunch of pies and a loaf of bread which I ate all at once. So delicious. A real hidden gem for anyone on a GF diet!
T. T.
Excellent coffee from their own beans and a menu full of delicious vegan breakfast items. Nice space and quick service. I'd gladly have breakfast here every day if I could!
L. f.
We had just got off a plane and were starving. The staff were super attentive and lovely, there were heaps of vegan options (more than I'm used to, making it hard to choose!) and the food was absolutely delicious. It was a great experience.
L. M.
Staff are always friendly and seem to be quite knowledgable. They have an impressive selection of menu items, as well as baked goods and treats. I personally feel quite claustrophobic here so I find it best to avoid peak hours.
C. M.
Came here for breakfast because it looked busy, didn't realise it was a healthy/veggie/ vegan/gluten free options place. But decided to try it anyway and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The portions were good too, I didn't leave hungry.
C. V.
Cute little space, was really busy which is great! Lovely strong coffee. They have a great range of beans you can take home and will fill up your byo container!
K. P.
I had the tastiest coffee here this morning. The staff were fun and I can recommend the cheesy twist. Perfect breakfast.
V. M. (.
Wonderful menu providing such fabulous variety to gluten free vegetarian and vegan. Only downside was the tiny space to cram everyone in, so unfortunately it's not a place you can linger.
G. M.
Simply put... amazing coffee! The food menu is divine and the team working here are fenomenal.
H.
Good gluten free baked goods. Lotd of variety. Unfortunately I have never enjoyed their coffee.
R. T.
Great gluten free options and great coffee. Love the friendly, bustling atmosphere and service. I loved popping in for a coffee and a snack on my way into town. The unique mural adds a quirky and distinctive vibe to this cafe.

E. R.
Best cafe in Australia. The only place I've found that is 100% coeliac safe. Most cafes have 1 or 2 gluten free options, but here I can choose anything off the menu without worrying about there being any gluten cross contamination. Good …

Interesting vegetarian menu in a fresh, modern space. Friendly staff, quick service. REAL chai! from spices not the powdered stuff. Excellent retro music playlist but played a little too loudly for my tastes.
M. M.
This place never fails to deliver!

Top Gluten free options. We travel 160km for breakfast here.
j.
100% Gluten free, nice food, friendly staff. A nice find for a travelling Coeliac.
B. P.
My coeliac happy place 🙂 BUT... I just schlepped my family here on New Year’s Day because the phone message (when I callled to check) said they were open on public holidays until 3pm. Turned up - closed. Thank goodness for Mr Burger 🍔
S.
Had sensational food and service. We had the polenta and the corn bread and took some treaties home. All fabulous. Loved how genuinely lovely the staff were, it really made the experience.
