I have been going to Degraves Espresso Bar for I think over 20 years, and it's taken me this long to sit down and finally 5 star it.
From taking rather attractive ladies there when I was a fine young strapping lad in my 20's; to taking my clients there today as an ageing family guy, it's a top spot.
Really nice good, top location and I have strong feels for the great place. LOVE THEIR WORK!
K. R.
It is a bar and a cafe. Prices are good and I chose something simple for a quick breakfast. I had coffee and toast. Both were good, although my toast came with spreads in packets and the butter was a bit too hard.
J. C.
Great outdoor dinning area at Flinders Lane. While the lamb ragu is absolutely delicious, the tapas are only okay, nothing particularly outstanding. Especially not a big fan of the prawns, taste very bland. Services are friendly though.
E.
Always a solid drop in. Coffee reliable. Love a good bowl of porridge with banana and honey in the morning. Also good for after work drinks. A fav.

I have a couple of friends in Melbourne who describe Degraves Street as a tourist trap - I can’t agree! I love this little street and the many cafes clustered around... The Quarter is my favourite - I have had breakfast here many times and love it... I have also had late night desert... and again, I love it! This morning was coffee and scrambled eggs... yummy and straight forward... enjoy the coffee here - they know how to make an excellent one!
M. A.
The location of this place is what gives it the charm. It's clearly almost always busy, which makes it a great place for coffee and...people watching!
The coffee is absolutely awesome. I tried a variety and found the weak long black to be the best.
The negatives I found are: The service is incredibly slow, and the cutlery/glasses are filthy. I had to replace my water glass twice (when I actually got a hold of the waiter).
B.
Loved this place. Super friendly guy serving, absolutely delicious food. Go and try it, also super kid friendly, made a pizza especially for the kids.
j.
Such a cute little cafe with great coffee. The vibe was great and staffs were nice too.
B. M. 馬.
Great location for a excellent coffee; always a fun atmosphere; very friendly/helpful staff.
A. G.
Had a lovely Eggs Benedict. Long black was sour, possibly over extracted. Piccolo latte was delicious.
Very welcoming staff and a cozy little dining area. The old train seating with the fold down bases are a quirky touch. A nice spot to meet friends for coffee and a meal. Would recommend.
M. S.
Had coffee here on a rainy evening and it felt awesome. Location, coffee and seating on the street everything was great. I tried affagato and loved it, ice cream has strong vanilla flavour and the coffee was steaming hot, great combination. Almond croissant was okayish
L.
Had a delicious brunch at Degraves Espresso. I love it when a restaurant is happy to accommodate a custom off-the-menu dish. Great food, beautiful happy staff, terrific coffee and quick service while sitting in a bustling little metropolis.
Y. S. L.
The service was good and the location is as "Melbournian" as it can get: tucked in an alley near Flinders Street Station. Food wise I was not too impressed. I have had better ones elsewhere. Still, if you have a visitor, this may still be a good place to bring them for the experience and watch people.
F. K.
Great food, great staff and service that make the 'Degraves experience' awesome. The coffee is fantastic. I have never had a less than wonderful coffee. Kudos to the Battista!
S. I.
Quick service, delicious food. Breakfast is 8-3.30 on weekends, perfect if like me you wake up too late and still crave eggs or French toast :-)
D. P.
Nice small cosy place for warm drinks and snacks. They have other meals too. Staff are super friendly and quick. Affogato was nice.❤
T. Y.
This is quite literally the first place I go everytime I come to Melbourne. The French toast is worth killing for. Coffee is great, and other menu items are consistently amazing. Be aware it is cash only.
V. J.
Coffee and eggs, sitting on old movie house seats, Black Hole Sun playing in the background - one of my city favourites - consistently good.
D. W.
Always a crowd pleaser, and the baked eggs are definitely the dish to go for! A personal favourite for many years 👍
D. W.
Has a nice vibe sitting on the street. My pork belly roll was 10/10. Staff seemed friendly.
a. 1.
Nice stop for a coffee in the buzzing degraves street. More quiet inside than in the street. You may find better food for similar price. Cash only.
J. A.
This was was great. The coffee was nice and so was the food. We had the Granola and the Spanish tomatoes both were big and tasty.
H. H.
Had eggs benny. We switched ham for bacon, recommend it! Generous serving of bacon. Very friendly staff, and the coffee was pretty good too. They’ve got outdoor sitting which is perfect on a good day. Otherwise, they’ve got aircon seating area for hot summer days.
M. A.
Good place to sit for a coffee!
J. 4.
Very good service. Maybe the best coffee of Melbourne. Original place. The eggs Benedictin were just amazing! We come back soon!
P. C.
Nice place, a bit cramped seating, but that's probably the idea.. meal was nice, coffee a bit cold. Had to ask for 1 meal as hadn't arrived.
D. W.
Best panini I’ve ever had. Our Degreaves St. go to.
D. W.
Great Coffee and good food as well. The rustic outlook of the place too is pretty unique and adds to the ambience of the spot. The outdoor dining too is pretty good. However not recommended in winter because it gets quite cold out there. Although heating lamps are available.
E. S.
Really nice coffee and yummy breakfast with original flavours. Nice customer service and quick to get food out. A little bit expensive but not too bad, could take away what I didn’t finish. Would definitely be back!
A.
Loved our first breakfast at Degraves in the Lane ways of Melbourne. Food was great, ambience was nice also. Can get very busy around brunch as we discovered the next day and couldn't snag a table. Coffee was top notch
S. M.
Food was so so. Decor vintage shabby chic. Grunge with dirt. Cute.
A. C.
Efficient service and a good selection on offer. Had an excellent breakfast of "green eggs" (toast with egg, pesto, feta be red onion scramble) with a side of smoked salmon. Iced coffee wasn't a frosty as the first waiter who served me, but it was sweet (like the second waiter who brought my food out). Plastic straw unnecessary.
L. M.
Great place to visit, food was yummy and well priced. Tight for space which is understandable being on degraves street, but the ambiance makes up for it. We had the french toast which was a bit hit, the coffee great but only if you like it strong. Food came quickly but we had a few issues with getting the order across, a small blip on an otherwise good experience.
B. R.
Good coffee. Genuine owner or manager. Still has a human touch in the middle of town. Workers have a good balance of cool and busy yet enough class to recognize locals and make life easier getting regular coffee. Bakery exceptional occasionally. Would eat baked snacks from here more if my body could live on it. Small business equals high quality in this case.
I. E.
Good coffee and good food, but check your bill....we were charged $58 for two breakfasts and two coffees. The food came to around 40 bucks, making it $9 each for a mug of latte! According to another review, there is a "weekend loading" but it wasn't made obvious to us.
D. M.
Carbonara and pumpkin soup were very tasty. Shared outdoor seating with other Laneways F&B outlets made for a nice atmosphere. There were overheat heaters so it wasn't too cold despite being winter. Overall a good experience.
B.
This place was cozy nice coffee and cake we would come again
B. O.
Amazing food! Super friendly staff. We eat there every chance we get. Definitely recommend.
C. M.
We enjoyed the food and it was very reasonably priced so we went there again two days later. The service was adequate as were the food portions. Three tapas plates for $34 was more than sufficient to feed my husband and I. The muscle dish was quite delicious.
K. A.
5 of us had brunch on a busy Sunday. Food was good, service (front of house) was awful. Two waitresses would’ve rather been somewhere else. Grumpy attitudes, dumped things on table, no smiles. Hence the 3 star rating (kitchen staff were doing a superb job).
D. N.
Well sheltered and heated seats in the middle of the street, menu is on the side of the bar - items on the menu are mostly easy to read from the seats. Staff are friendly and the service is fast. Was with 4 people, so we had 4 meals - all were awesome, had the best risotto. The area to sit in is rather crowded but that can't be helped.
D. T.
My best male friend and I guaranteed we have our bohemian experience coffee and a little something to eat and not a problem if we share food item yeah cut it in half and get two plates . . . I personally enjoy the genouros bowl of porridge which is either banana with yummy maple syrup not too sweet cos I reckon it's the real deal or previous time pear yes different but enjoyable. . . Paying after is cash only!!! But strangely they've got an ATM machine never seen it working so keep in mind to cash up first before . . . The furniture is a real hoot with old bench theatre chairs still doing what they do sitting upright until you push down yeah comfortable But if that's not your thing I suggest to sit at front of cafe along a long bench table and just simply enjoy watching Our Melbourne people walking through Degraves Street VERY INTERESTING ENJOY YOUR TIME 😜
G. S.
You get the Best coffee in Melbourne here
G. P.
Great cafe and lovely people!
Once I went to return the money back as I forgot to pay for my coffee. But the owner did not accept the money as I honestly went to return it :). Thank you guys! You are lovely people!
W. F.
The atmosphere along this strip is great, real Melbourne vibe. The food is fine, nothing over the top, coffee is fine also. Unless you really enjoy getting squashed into a cafe, don't come here. Not much room to move around, can get very personal with the people on the next table.
D. H.
This is my go to place for coffee in Melbourne. The staff are friendly and bubbly, and depending on the barista you can have some amazing latte art on your coffee.
Porridge for breakfast today, topped with honey, cinnamon and pear. Even with a head cold it tastes gorgeous!
I love the setting as well, tucked down an alley (not an ominous one though!), the interior is warm and inviting.
A. C.
Good coffee, but we had three different people serve us all at the same time, and ended up missing some food then having them bring out double (which we didn't actually get to eat...). Service bit of a thumbs down but overall would still go again for coffee.
A. T.
It was ok. Service was great, waitress was lovely. Ordered the mixed olives, we didn't get what we ordered :( coffee was ok, and it's a good spot for people watching.
I. C.
Quaint alley full of cafes and restaurants. Nice anytime of the day from breakfast to a night cap
P. P.
Three stars for the location and vibe.
Our Coffees were ok, but the pre-made panini in the window display don't look particularly appetizing. Chose a freshly made panini off the menu instead.
N. M.
Great food at a decent price. The owner was also very lovely and was down for a chat :) would come back
N. C.
We visited this cafe this morning and quite frankly it was more than chaotic. However the food was amazing and a very sweet british girl went above and beyond to deliver great service for us! Because of this we will definitely be back soon!!
F. F.
Good ambiance.
Close to Flinders station.
Lively lane.
M. N.
We chose to sit inside and it was extremely warm. We ordered pork belly panini and baked eggs with two coffees. One of the coffees came out with someone's lipstick still on the glass and we had to send it back. The pork belly panini was a bit plain, but the bread was really enjoyable.
A. S.
Beautiful coffee and service. Nice location. Was an early morning breakfast so really quiet, but beautiful none the less. Excellent food too!
L.
Best coffee I’ve ever had! I’m from Canada and I’ve been here THREE times?! A must go-to if you’re in Melbourne. Seating is super cool - sorta feels like you’re on a train (a cute and cozy train that is!)
T. B.
Food was fairly nice, sadly Pork Belly was burnt. Gnocchi and Soup tasted great. Service needs work. Simple manners and table skills would improve the service greatly.
M. N.
Had to get a quick meal on a short lunch break but didn’t want take away so swung into Degraves Espresso bar, the service was great they made sure they could make the order with enough time and when the food came it was hot, filling and stuffed with flavour.
Loved it, can’t wait to go back again when I have more time!
M. W.
Since I started working in the city I've been up and down Degraves street and Centre Place looking for the best cafe to get a flat white in the morning. Degraves Espresso is that cafe. The staff are friendly, the coffee is great. I'm now a regular and can say "The usual thanks Justin," and it's ready in 30 seconds.
I haven't had a meal here yet though, Degraves street is always busy, so you may not get a seat.
N. T.
The best sticky date in the country (and I’ve tried a few..). Moved from Melbourne a year ago and am contemplating going for a visit just for their sticky date :P
廖.
Great coffee and the street is relax and even winter it's still warm
A. F.
Great tapas! Chicken sticks were a little dry but I definitely recommend the pork, I could eat that all day!
The seating area was a little cramped, but fast and friendly service.
R. B.
Good coffee but you will pay top dollar for it. The manager or owner seems to lurk over the staff to ensure thry are not putting the cash in their pockets which ruins the experience.
D. M.
Good food. Staff were polite but run off the feet and there system was down. Staff mentioned that there was no manager on duty. Was card only. Specials in the menus where incorrect and not what was on special. I was told to look at the window at the front to see what was on special.
M. G.
Four of us had dinner there. The food was a bit hit and miss with the meals, and they took a while to come take the order and bring it out. We think it was just because there was so many customers and not enough staff were put on.
p.
..good food and great service. Three of us were very happy with the food/atmosphere/service on a busy Friday night. I shall certainly be there on my next visit to Melbs.
Y. Z.
Vert good cafe and offers excellent breakfast choices.
A little bit crowed when sitting inside while busy.
Overall a great choice if you want a coffee or some food to eat while visiting Melbourne.
J. N.
Brilliant coffee. Great atmosphere
J. G. (.
Good coffee and food and great atmosphere. Let down by average service who avoid eye contact with patrons and hand around the till like they're the breakfast club... Happens every time I come here.
J. W.
Ive unfortunately been to this place several times in the 10 years ive lived in melbourne. It does good coffee, if you're willing to wait for ages and willing to put up with the "you could never be as cool as i think i am" attitude. The service is absolutely attrocious. If this cafe was in any other location it wouldn't survive, but because it is on the morning commute from Flinders st and its in a popular tourist location it does ok. The staff will make you wait until they finish their conversation to serve you (which may take 20 minutes), and even then will treat you with rudeness and total disdain. Seriously, someone needs to talk to the owners because the children who work at the place are just sending money out the door.
R. B.
Decent breakfast. Little on the expensive side. But does the job!
e. k.
Loved apple crumble latte and flat white.
In some way the best coffee in Lorne,
Except for the 20% surcharge in public holiday
But everything was good though
C. E.
Food was okay, quite pricey though. Also enjoyed the service.
E. O.
We picked up a friend from work and she showed us this Café. Had some Antipasti and drinks. Loved the ambiance and the antipasti were great.
D. M.
Very nice place to eat at, and lovely staff
D.
I would have given a 5* rating as the breakfast was perfect, however your method of payment is stuck in the early 20th century. We've moved on guys, cash only is ridiculous now.
M. S.
Good coffee and great food, and Lovely Waitress
P. W.
Had a great breakfast two mornings running. Service was prompt and pleasant. Outside seating is crowded and not particularly comfortable.
M. S.
Great mocha and the service is wonderful with delicious dishes
l. w.
Food is always very good at this place HOWEVER trying to get service is ridiculously slow. Staff - especially the managers will just ignore you attempting to get their attention, standing by the door, chatting or on their phones.
M. d. C.
Best French toast and great coffees. When when is busy the staff remain friendly and give the page a very welcoming air.
J. C.
Great coffee good breakfast poached eggs perfect.
I. F.
The manager of this place is great and makes sure they continue serving great coffee and food. I go back to this place regularly (even if the seating is a little uncomfortable).
C. T.
Fast service, great food. Came out about 5 minutes after we ordered. And they were playing Smashing Pumpkins & Silverchair over breakfast!
C. B.
Really yummy food in a typically cool Melbourne laneway. Try the Farfalle carbonara... The creamy sauce and bacon really make it delicious. Reasonably priced.
J. A.
Great service. Good atmosphere. Amazing coffee. Food was decent but just a little over priced for a backpacker
K. H.
I always order the pork belly panini, which is absolutely amazing, but the atmosphere and the no-card policy is quite run down and inconvenient.
B. B.
Definitely an old timer on this street which is famous for their coffee. Get here and take a seat outside for the perfect people watching spot.
Sadly, panini wasn't too good hence my 3 stars.
C. N.
Great atmostphere for a weekend’s morning. One of the best coffee in Mel but the food is average. A bit pricy but reasonable for its location.
D.
Food is above average and coffee is great. Seating can be a problem. Don't even bother trying on a public holiday. But has to be one of the best in the city.
M. T.
Not a bad little Place hidden away in Degraves Street laneway. They used to be a really cute guy who worked here but I think he was on a working holiday visa I haven't seen him in a couple of years.
C. R.
November 2014
Went with family to this espresso bar/restaurant. Food was nice and so were the drinks.
Got tapas plates and sangria's. :)
R. N.
Decent food and coffee. Not so much friendly staffs. It's "okay" place. I'm sure there are much nicer places around.
F. G.
The food was ok, but the seating is a bit tight which gets really annoying when the service staff keep trying to get past you. Service was average, there are better places around.
D. M.
Nice place for an early lunch on a Saturday. Very tasty Spanish eggs. Casual place in a busy lane way full of cafes and atmosphere.
R. N.
Green eggs not the best choice to have
A. J.
Amazing experience , great staff friendly and professional . The food is divine et the cocktail are perfect! Definitely recommended!
J. J.
There must something has changed in this place, they used to serve great coffee and nice food and the price was pretty good as well. NOT ANY MORE.
The service is really terrible now and you'd wait an hour to get your food, the staff will be very dishonest. If you don't want to SPOIL your weekend, PLEASE don't go there.
B. A.
Loved this place, plenty of beautiful vegan options and it's strip of shops and cafes along this lane way make compost from all the food scraps!!help make a difference , support this cafe💗
S. H.
Stumbled across this little place - beautiful food, coffee was excellent and very helpful staff. Would go back again.
K. E.
Lovely lunch spot in Degraves Lane
C. C.
Excellent place for breakfast with a great selection and the coffee to match. Staff are efficient and friendly.
J. H.
Tasty food and coffee but they don't accept card. It is rude to inconvenience your customers just so they can evade tax obligations.
M. M.
Some of the best coffee and breakfast in Melbourne. Will head here directly from the airport every time. Fantastic service.
S. S.
I've had coffee, breakfast and lunch here dozens of times. First time tonight we had dinner. Spanish tapas. Each time, excellent.
G.
A good choice of tasty dishes. Efficient table service. Novel seating - old cinema seats.
C. M.
Location 4 star, food 4, toilet -10(blocked and disgusting) and EFTPOS NOT WORKING and didn't tell us when we sat down. Had to search around for an ATM.
T. T.
Amazing eggs benedict!! Coffee was great but wasn't the 5/5 I was hoping for... Overall definitely recommend this place for brekkie!!
D. W.
Cool and noisy for all the right reasons
W. D.
Nice take away toasted prosciutto roll, did not leave me with a "I must go back" feeling.

R. W.
Loved the coffee and the atmosphere. Haven't tried the food yet but it looked great.
J. M.
The coffee we had was lovely the service was great the soup my mum had she enjoyed and the salmon I had was wonderful
A. E.
Love the retro feel of the cafe but I have to say the coffee isn't that good. The meals are great.
n. r. (.
Nice place in a popular ally way to have some breki . its more of a touristy spot in melbourn but it has good food and the staff are alert . also its good great atmosphere and good for people watching .
S. M.
Fantastic food, service and menu. Serves alcohol. Indoor & outside seating. Always busy. Opposite Flinders St Railwaý Station.
J. P.
A cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, great coffee and the old cinema seats are the perfect touch to a classic Melbourne cafe.

Good tasting hot chocolate with about normal prices for the city. The place badly needs a fresh coat of paint and fix up though
A. G.
Great tapas and cool atmosphere. Friendly laid back staff. Will definitely revisit.
E. D.
