Asian inspired cafe wth clean simple decor. Our server was friendly with great service. Both the food and coffee were excellent.
P.
Good Food, good prices and good service.
The menu is interesting with lots of Japanese options including Ramen and classics such as Chicken Burgers
The Tempura Prawn Burger was delicious and the Miso fries equally tasty. Look forward to going back again 😋🙂
Note: Theres a covered yard area at the back with tables...this would make a nice spot on a sunny day to eat 🧐🙂
E. O.
Ramen was okay, the price point was fairly high for serving size.
Coffee was fantastic and the green tea was too.
Outdoor seating area is quaint and well thought out.
Would have been nice to receive the high chair clean, instead of covered in dust and bits.
Parking is available but not many spots.
N. V.
The courtyard is perfect on a summers day! They are dog friendly and give them little treats which is super cute. Most importantly the coffee is great and the menu has your Melbourne breakfast favourites with a bit of a Japanese inspired twist and just beautifully presented.
J. R.
A cafe designed to thrive in Melbourne. Amazing coffee and a Japanese inspired menu means that Kissaten is a local favourite. Friendly service and good food across the board ensures you can't go wrong.
D. C.
Visited for a quick meal during the day. The food was tasty if a little expensive, but the quality was worth it. Washed it down with one of the inhouse drinks which were excellent too. Perfect little place to sit on a warm day with their covered outdoor seating and their air-conditioned inside.
P. B.
Spacious backyard for a brunch day out with dogs, yummy
P. N.
A quaint Japanese cafe/eatery that served me an amazing ramen that is slightly different to others in town with its yasai broth.
Along with great coffee and service, I'll be sure to return!
A. F.
Great spot for a Japanese inspired lunch. Good cafe to bring your dog too.

We’ve got a fine cafe here. A very welcome addition to this area in a well known location. It’s already my new favourite place.
Kissaten specializes in Japanese inspired breakfasts and lunches and they do these very very well on what we experienced today. I’ve always quite liked this place and thought it was a tad underutilised in the past as Apte cafe. There’s a pleasant minimalist look and feel and warming colours. It just needed something better established here.
I adore places with sparkling water deals. The water here is made on premises. It’s all joy as it’s bottomless for $3 only, soon with a pump. I adore ramen for breakfast and couldn’t look past that here on the menu. It was a key reason I’d sought the place out. Mine was the Shio Tonkotsu Ramen. It was delicious. Super pork belly in the dish. Two beautifully cut and cooked slabs. A really lovely deep rich broth too. Beautiful kale in the dish as well which was both soft and chewy. In addition, the hard egg was a flavour explosion. A lovely consistency gave way to a thrilling saltiness that I’d find hard to explain. It was fabulous. I really enjoyed the noodles too and the sesame seeds as well. Overall, I reckon it’s a cracking dish. My partner went the breakfast ramen which I was eyeing off from across the table. She really enjoyed it and polished the lot off in no time. I’ll have that one next time, thank you.
We really liked the Japanese chili with black sesame and the bonito flakes with white sesame that was provided with the ramen. They were terrific and helped to add extra flavour and texture to both dishes.
This cafe is such a great addition to the area. It’s not a huge menu but there are still about six or more dishes I still want to try here. There’s big things in prospect for the cafe in future too. Hopefully a liquor licence soon and then we’ll see wine, sake, craft beers made available. Perhaps even a Japanese themed Bloody Mary too! A coffee window is also a possibility as well at the back of the cafe. There’s a really handy car park at the back for non locals and the window would make grabbing a coffee extra easy.
Talking of coffee, it’s taken really seriously here at Kissaten as is tea. My brew to finish today was the Peruvian single origin which is a good rich and inky black coffee. It was expertly made here and delightful.
A terrific cafe. I cannot wait to return.
C. B.
Cozy atmosphere, great food, good service and an excellent time had. The servings were excellent and the food was a tasty contemporary Japanese offering. I'll definitely come again - now I know not to swallow the whole edamame.
A.
Dropped in for coffee and cake. Both were very good. Very nice staff. The courtyard at the back is a bonus.
J. R.
Delicious food and moreish! A perfect lovely local - can be hectic on Saturday mornings, small standard coffee size, always consistent.
e. d.
Arigato! Well worth a stop when out cycling. A great place to refuel. Pleasant & friendly staff and service. Nice simple menu. Had a vegetarian “sausage” roll ... I’ll be back on the next trip to Mt Pleasant
B.
This place is fantastic, we will be back!! Great service, the staff are very friendly and the food is amazing 😍😍 Such an interesting menu to choose from 🌟 We had Yuzu Bana Pancakes and the Fritters special everything was delicious! Defs will be back to try the ramen next time 👌
n. s.
Awsome selection on the menu and I love how it's different to the standard cafe menus. It also taste fantastic 😁. Good coffee and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, your not squashed in. Plenty of parking at the venue or on the street. The toilets are also nice and clean 😎 keep up the good work 🏅Omurice ♥️

Japanese inspired cafe run by local Australians. My partner and I went in on a quiet Thursday afternoon for lunch. We were served by their very friendly owner. Food service was slow. We waited around 20 minutes for a donburi and ramen, when the cafe is less than half filled. Both the donburi and ramen were very salty. For $22 (from what I remembered), both the donburi sauce and "tonkotsu" ramen broth lack any form of depth of depth or complexity and tasted very salty. There are plenty of Japanese options in shopping mall food court that are way better in terms of authenticity and taste. However, do give them a try only if you're in the area and craving for some Australian Japanese food. They have a lovely courtyard that is great for the summer.
J. C.
A newly-established modern Japanese cafe (owned by the folks behind Chin Chin in Flinders Ln) with delicious ramen options in the Fairfield/Alphington area. The coffee and karaage chicken burger were also fantastic.
D. A.
Great coffee and friendly staff. Plenty of room inside and outside too, even has some children's books and toys available for little ones.
H. K.
Nice staff, not busy when I went on a Saturday, had car park in back. Would say the food is good but a little pricey.
S. S.
A hidden gem In Alphington! An exciting hybrid of Japanese and Australian Cuisine. The Omurice & Ramen are fantastic and cater for a cheeky breakfast or lunch! The staff here are always smiling and caring. With a private courtyard you can escape the city rush with ease.
The delicious coffee and matcha only add to the experience.
I highly recommend.
C. K.
Great service, delicious food - the pancake was the best I’ve ever eaten at a cafe, and I’ve tried more than a few. None of that gluggy, overpriced, undercooked rubbish here! And beautifully presented to boot!
A. M. G.
Nice local cafe with good food and service
Area we did not like:
- extra fishy taste of salmon in egg Benedict ( compare to other places)
- extra credit card charge on top of public holiday service charge
G. B.
Very good coffee. Neat little outdoor counter Cafe window on parking lot in rear.
T. L.
Great balance between authenticity and relaxed modern vibe. Love the fully shaded but still light and spacious yard. Can recommend the local chai latte variety (hojicha latte).
J. W.
Great coffee, delicious menu and friendly service.
Handy parking area at the rear of the venue as well.
B. H.
A very contemporary Japanese atmosphere, and very tasty food. I can't remember the name of what I had but I know that it had meat in it and that it was super super good. The drinks were nice too, and they had a good choice of outdoor and indoor seating as well as aircon which was tops as well.
Def coming back here again when I'm in the neighbourhood
A. T.
Great coffee, the breakfast ramen is amazing too.
M. b.
The atmosphere is elite!
The coffee is full bodied and low to midlevel acidity!
The menu is really varied with options for everyone! 💙💙
I. R.
One of my favourite spots. Amazing coffee and great atmosphere ☕️
C. A.
Very friendly staff, nice undercover outdoor dining area out the back, and some tasty looking items on their menu. I was there for breakfast and had a strong flat white which was great, although perhaps not hot enough for me if I'm being nitpicky. Also had the Breakfast Roll, which has a fried egg, bacon, cheese, and spinach and that was delicious!
P. W.
Cafe with good lunch menu, nice outdoor area and carpark at the back.
p. d.
Excellent service. Staff very friendly and attentive. Agreat selection and quality at reasonable prices.
T. W.
Adam, Byron and the rest of the lovely team at Kissaten have transformed this place. The menu is constantly evolving and really adventurous. They run a very environmentally-conscious operation (completely biodegradable packaging etc) and there are lots of vegan options too, which is cool. The coffee is outstanding and I love the rear coffee window to allow for a socially-distanced wait for your coffee. I really hope they get a liquor license and I can enjoy a wine in their beer garden when the plague passes. A very welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
A. S.
I had breakfast at Kissaten 3 days ago and just texted my friend to tell her that I haven't been able to stop thinking about the food (a sure sign that it deserves a positive review!). The staff were lovely and the coffee is good too. I'll be back because eating the food is better than daydreaming about it, right?!
B. J. B.
I have eaten at Kissaten Alphington 6 times and each time I have left feeling extremely satisfied. The Coffee is fantastic. Love their kombucha. A very diverse menu with its Japanese flair. Beautiful presented and prepared food that leaves you thinking you have eaten something special. The staff are very friendly.
Always a lovely experience.
R. M.
Oh my goodness!! I would give it more stars if I could!! We had been eyeing this cafe ever since we moved near, and I only wish we had tried it sooner!! The food is incredible and so beautifully presented. We had omu rice and okonomiyaki, and boy was it delicious! Just when I thought it couldn't get better, we tasted their out of this world hojicha latte, and it was heaven!! Their staff is so sweet and friendly that she even told us how to make the tea ourselves! Their dining setting is quite charming, especially outside. Both me and my partner instantly fell in love with this place, and I'm sure we'll be frequenting it from now on. One of the best cafes out there for sure.
B. G.
Great atmosphere and cafe! The Matcha latte was amazing and tasted authentic! Friendly staff! I highly recommend this place!
C. F.
Excellent Japanese food with a contemporary twist. The menu is light, refreshing, and well-worth the trip. I used to come here when it was a cyclist's barista bar a while back, and I'm very pleased that the new owners have lent their own flavour (!) to the establishment.
Perfect time!
M. G.
We come here regularly for our neighbourhood walk and take away coffees. Can’t wait til post covid to sit in the back cute patio and have a cuppa. Such nice folks! And beautiful coffees. They give dogs lil treats too it’s pretty cute
j. s.
The coffee is fantastic and the staff are super friendly. You get a great mix of asian fusion and classic cafe meals. Definitely been a saviour through the lockdown and can't wait to sit down and have a meal.
M. B.
An amazing experience hidden in the suburbs. A lot of care and hard work has been put in to produce this superb cafe.
A. D.
Absolutely outstanding little gem of a place. Highly recommended for something a little different from your standard Melbourne cafe. Exceptional service and fantastic food.
A. Y.
Lovely customer service, can park bikes out back, and great coffee. I had their breakfast ramen this morning. Very tasty and a good portion size.
K. W.
Awesome menu and great coffee! My favourite treat cafe in the area and I’ve never had something from there I didn’t love. Friendly staff always make you feel like they appreciate you being their customer as well 💖
C. G.
Great little spot. Fantastic service, great coffee and delicious ramen.
J. D.
Decent coffee for local area. Waiter is quite friendly and have good knowledge about the menu.
Food is ok, a bit blend. Interesting menu but in term of flavourwise still have room for improvement
M. W.
Wow. I'm seriously surprised you can deat here. The food is fantastic, priced well with awesome, tasty portions and it comes to the table quickly. The big news is that you actually want to swallow this coffee. Thanks for an awesome brekky.
I. K.
One of the best vegan ramens I have had. Fresh, tasty, light (perfect for a brekki/lunch) and exactly what I needed. The coffee is just as good and my partner's egg on toast dish was delicious too. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. We will be back. Thanks guys :)
S. x.
Stumbled upon this cafe by pure chance and was pleasantly surprised to find a hidden treasure. The coffee as well as the food are fantastic. I ordered the chicken donburi which, was swimming with umami flavours. The barista mentioned that their shio tonkatsu ramen is the best item on the menu, will have to sit down with a bowl in their gorgeous patio seating area once the pandemic restrictions have been lifted.
G. R.
Who knew breakfast ramen would hit so good! Also had the best orange juice of my life. Coffee also amazing. Will be back :)
A. D.
Second time we've been. Delicious both times. If you can score an outside table, that's the best. Food wise, I recommend the breakfast ramen. It's a delicious and original take on a Japanese staple. The hojicha latte is also an interesting green-tea twist on a chair latte. Only thing was that the service was a vit slow. Quick to take our orders, buy about fifteen minutes to get our drinks and half an hour for the food. To be fair, it was quite busy.
T. J.
The staff and owners are very nice and informative. They blend japanese modern style with a twist of traditional touches. Menu is fantastic. Location is snug, local vibe..the outdoor area is very hip. Can't go wrong with any order..everything just tastes great!
W.
Nice matcha latte. 🍵
Has a car park out the back luckily.
Nice shop. Pretty good food using good ingredients.
Includes normal menu, specials menu and a seemingly changing sandwich list.
The BLAT here is very good and even better with an added egg! 🍳
Breakfast roll also a winner.
They always have juice specials which are good and interesting, I like that. But they have nice fresh blended juices that are stuck on the menu too, including a green one and a watermelon. 🍉
The teas they have are pretty good and not just a tea bag but they’re loose leaf tea.
My vegan friend reckons their salads are nice but I haven’t tried them.
I tried the smoked salmon with eggs and miso hollandaise sauce. Sauce is interesting.
The salmon portion isn’t huge but very good quality and nice. It also comes with a largish slice of pumpkin haha. I think because miso is quite a good mix with pumpkin.
I’ve tried the ramen, it’s not bad. The thick pork slices in it are very tasty and good quality. It has a nice ponzu/miso type sauce in it and some lightly fried green veggies. Also spring onion, a marinated egg and some nori and sesame seeds. They serve it with some shichimi (Japanese chilli powder) and another spice that is optional to put in, but I really liked them. The stock may be only veggie but it’s tasty and definitely worth trying if you like ramen. It’s a bit of a cafe style ramen anyway and I can respect that.
Anyway pretty top cafe. Cheers.
A. Y.
I enjoyed this place although I felt it had a bit of a strange vibe. But the food was good. I got the salmon Benedict which was a pleasant fusion of flavours.
J. G.
Oishii! This cafe has a real point of difference from the usual likeable joints with a Japanese menu of ramen and other delicious things as a variation from the typical menus. The coffee quality is still of the high standard expected for the area as you would expect because the name translates generically as "coffee shop".
T. T.
Yummo is all to be said. Food is to die for and service is excellent. We like to brunch with our dog and they are so dog friendly here, I thought my dog was going to be seated before us. He even got a yummy treat. Grest going guys, we will be back
D.
Exceptional, consistent coffee, with excellent staff. Great outdoor areas as well for the warmer months. Highly recommend giving this place a go.
M. U.
Poppedin for a t/a coffee this morning and it was as good as I remembered.
Some easy to select options include tasty toasties. Also some cakes, donuts etc.
Easy off street parking directly behind the building.
A. H.
This place is a great little gem. Great food and coffee. And the staff are always friendly.
T. N.
Good food, nice setting outdoor. We enjoyed our brunch there.
C. P.
A nice Japanese themed cafe. The chips are one of the best - if not the best I have had.
Staff are always friendly.
Bicycle facilities could use an upgrade.
T. G.
Kare Bread was simply amazing. I wish I could eat them all the time. Little window at the back is super convenient for grabbing takeaway too.
S. E.
Finally something new and special on the Melbourne café scene. Cafe classics with the perfect Japanese twists — the salmon benedict was spot on served with roast pumpkin with a mirin glaze. Beautiful space, welcoming staff and such a peaceful courtyard. Thanks Kissaten — see you again soon!
R. F.
Look, this place is amazing. If you’re ath-a-letes like me and my broham here, you roll up around 11am after having punched out 25 kay ems of paddle work. You’re on the chomp. You need excellent coffee, some bubbly water, and the most incredible breakfast you ever forced into your talk-hole. This is that place. Stop asking and starting eating.
A. D.
Equally the best ramen I’ve had outside of Japan. Amazing coffee and baby friendly too. I’ve been back twice already.

D. M.
Great selection. Dogs allowed outside they even get 1 treat per visit. If only they would do milkshakes for the kids it would be perfect.
S. H.
Authentic, wholesome, delicious. A lovely outdoor garden, perfect on a sunny day, pet-friendly and really friendly staff. A great addition to Alphington / Fairfield.
