Comments of Shortstop Coffee & Donuts
S. M.
A lot to like. The run of the mill doughnuts like the vanilla bean and Boston cream are tasty. The Rose Early Grey was beautiful and relatively unique. Do not however be deceived by the crullers. I bought a honey and iced coffee cruller and was really disappointed. They look delicious but are loaded with oil. The paper the crullers were on glistens with oil and even opening the crullers themselves you can just see the oil shining on the dough. We couldn’t finish them…Everything else was really nice, but the crullers were really disappointing.
D.
My favourite place for freshly made, high-quality donuts in the city. Shortstop also offers great tasting coffees served by friendly staff and a nice minimalist ambience.
C. M.
Accurate name! Worth for a quick stop and a sweet bite. Had a great coffee and that thing covered in bacon and maple syrup that made my mouth water. Congratulations to the team!
G. W.
Had one of the maple walnut ones today (fresh) and it absolutely blew my mind, I didn’t think donuts could actually be this good it was seriously crazy.
I then thought what better way to score some brownie points with the missus and bought her home a triple matcha. Let’s just say she was very very happy.
B.
Best donuts so far in Melbourne! The Maple Walnut & Brown Butter was by far the best. We loved them with the only exception being the Australian Honey & Sea Salt - far too oily. The rest were fab and the service was well above par 🥳
s. d.
Bought it for the first time.
****** Boom 🔥🔥 *****
I have tried four donuts.
peanut butter caramel & chocolate - 7/10
Earl Grey and rosé - 5/10
Australian honey and sea salt (churro - oily) - 10/10
Maple walnut and brown butter - 9/10
comparison:
Krispy-creme donuts ~3$ each and just oka-ish.
Short stop ~6$ each and couple of them are 🔥🔥
A. Z.
Ordered ice Latte, then passed me this 7 dollars ice coffee without telling me the price. Ridiculous! Can’t believe I got bottled coffee from a cafe in Melb.
S.
LOVE their Maple Walnut & Brown Butter!! 🤍
N. N.
Delicious donuts at reasonable price, cute interior as well.
E.
Basically perfect service and mouthwatering donuts, there's really nothing to hate about them. They've got plenty of donors on offer, and there's something for everyone. There 9 varieties on offer today and the family I brought the donuts for were delighted by my gifts. That's how good they are.
Their staff members are also very well trained, to the point where they can tell me, without skipping a beat, which flavor they would recommend. The box is also very presentable, making their donuts the perfect gift for recipients with a surplus of exquisite booze and really don't need anything from good ol' Dan's.
I couldn't recommend this place more. 5/5
A. H.
Amazing. Donuts are more like cakes. With confidence I can say best in Melb
E. K. (.
Always have absolutely delicious donuts from here however was disappointed to visit last weekend and find out they don’t have drinking chocolate so I couldn’t order a mocha to have with my donut. Bit annoyed that they serve every other type of coffee except this
I. F.
Yam yam yam ! This place definitely unique
I’ve had the best doughnuts ever
Coffee good as well
Thank you
J. Y. J. T.
Perfectly balanced donuts. The texture was just right. The perfect amount of moisture and airiness in the dough. The sweet donuts have a very nice subtle aftertaste to them, and definitely not overwhelmingly sweet.
The savory donuts are still on the sweeter side, but it’s something that I kinda expected for a donut place anyway.
The coffee was also pretty good.

The donut shop you need to stop by when in the city! We loved the Australian honey and sea salt donut it was drenched in honey syrup. The peaches and cream was filled with with cream and peachy jam. The donuts were large and worth it for $4 each. We will definitely be back here soon.
Z. K.
Absolutely love the donuts here. Some of the best I’ve ever had! The blueberry cheesecake had a great filling-dough ratio and the glaze on top was subtle yet sweet.
The maple and walnut was my first Shortstop try and it was definitely a 12/10. Love at first bite. I will definitely be back!
N. T.
Loved the Maple Walnut and Brown Butter donut. Didn’t get time to try the other flavours but the store was well lit and designed. Ample standing room space as well.
B. M.
First time here today and loved my coffee, wish I had brought my larger keep cup! Not many manage to nail oat milk but Shortstop did.
They were sold out of donuts so now I need to come back for more coffee and to try some of these donuts too!
M.
A popular place for donuts that is justified. The donut texture is not dense, but fluffy, the way I like it. The ratio of filling to donut is generous. And not too sweet. The cafe itself is intimate with outside seating that is great on a sunny Melbourne day.
M. [.
Popped in for this month's donut special 'Coconut Lemon Meringue' which was super fresh with a smooth zesty lemon curd filling and lightly toasted meringue top!
Short stop is a cute little shop tucked away down Sutherland st, with warm welcoming staff! Limited seating but definitely recommend them for some of Melbourne's best donuts! (particular the maple walnut brown butter and passionfruit glaze ones!)
C. L.
I really enjoyed the coffee cruller with a hot mug of filtered coffee. I had mine freshly glazed, cold doughnut with a warm glaze, it was so comfy just to eat it. I wish I had more time to try everything!
Their regular menu is on daily, but on Friday and Sundays, they have specials.
Go on a Friday for peanut butter/peanut specials. I ordered a dark chocolate with peanut butter filled doughnut, that’s good.
Go on a Sunday for their lemon and coconut meringue, which I really enjoyed too.
Downside: there’s no alternative (dairy free) milk for coffee, so I had to get the filtered coffee, still good, but I wish I had a choice.
T. C.
I brought a donut and an iced coffee. They were absolutely amazing! Super fresh and tasty, the coffee was ice cold and divine. I completely recommend and will definitely be coming back.
E. K.
Small cafe that sells coffee and donuts. They have permanent donuts and special donuts on rotation. The Cruller is definitely a must try! It's soft, moist and not too sweet. Some of the other donuts might have overpowering aroma for some people.

Was recommended by a friend and decided to drop by as I was in the area. Although it was pretty crowded, the staff were extremely welcoming and patient. Customers were just chilling out and I loved the vibe. Had good recommendations from the barista on the maple and brown butter doughnut and loved the Cinnamon cardamom sugar one (Thanks Max!). I also highly recommend you to try the coffee, even though there is no option for skimmed milk. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Melbourne!
A.
Coffee amazing, roasted peanut butter amazing, their signature maple walnut donut also amazing. The matcha one was a bit dense and sour for my taste. Staff are lovely, for Walt and helpful. They should get five stars alone.
F. G.
Fancy selection or gourment donuts. We tried the Maple Walnut and Brown Butter donut as well as the Peanut Butter & Milk Choco Cream Donut. Both donuts have a nice texture of the dough. The cream was perfectly balanced with the peanut butter, not too sweet. Made me able to finish everything without cloying of too much cream or sugar.

Sometime during high school Krispy Kreme opened its first store in Melbourne. I remember travelling for an hour from Ringwood East to the City just to get my donut craving fixed. I guess Krispy Kreme really made me fell in love with donut. Unfortunately donut is not a popular snack/dessert in Hong Kong and my favorite store in Hong Kong "Munchies" closed down end of 2016 (sad face). To no ones surprise I would visit Melbourne's much loved cult hit "Shortstop Donut"! I drooled just by looking at the photos online, they all looked picture perfect but do they taste as good as they look?
The store is located in the heart of Melbourne CBD, it's in a little lane down Little Lonsdale Street. They offer different types of donuts yeast raised, cake and French crullers made with a choux pastry base. They fry their donuts throughout the day so you know they are always fresh. Their donuts are kept simple, not over done with toppings and all the flavors are very interesting and they sure all sound amazing. We chose the Australian Honey & Sea Salt and Maple, Walnut & Brown Butter.
Maple, Walnut & Brown Butter:
This was delightful, the base is a fluffy and light cake donut. The nuttiness of walnut balance out the sweet maple and the brown butter adds a slight bitterness to the donut. The perfect harmony, I could eat through the whole donut without feeling sickly sweet.
Australian Honey & Sea Salt:
This one was a French Cruller. not what i expected. The donut is quite soft and feels a bit greasy as you bite into it. However, there was a lovely fragrant from the honey and the sea salt gave the donut a nice kick.
Overall, I loved the Maple, Walnut & Brown Butter and would definitely go back to try more flavors. The Red Velvet sounds SO GOOD! Beetroot cake donut base filled with cream cheese icing and dipped in a dark chocolate glaze! I'm drooling already! They also offer filter coffer which will go very well a donut. Store opens at 8:30 most days. Donut and coffee makes a perfect breakfast, you will have a whole day to burn all those calories. hahaha
R. L. (.
Really good coffee! We were here around 3:30 and there’s still a line in front of the shop.
Love their donuts - the cinnamon sugar one was so fluffy. Wanted to try the other vanilla donuts but was too full!
Definitely will return next time 👌🏻
T.
The last time I visited this shop it was for a coffee. And I've been thinking about those donuts since.
So I ordered 4 donuts. Now these are not commercial donuts but artisan donuts and you can definitely taste the difference.
I had the Earl Grey and Rose, Maple Walnut, Blueberry Cheesecake and the Triple Matcha.
The triple matcha was delicious, in fact they all were. The donuts didn't taste or feel heavy instead the flavours of each donut was prominent and some time later I could still taste the flavour of the donuts.
Yum! These donuts are so good, and they do home delivery. Yay hahaha. Happy days.
This place is a must visit.
Previous review - December 2018
I was walking past and I saw this cafe/donut shop. Some of the donuts were huge! They had a matcha versions, and a range of different flavours.
I don't eat these kind of donuts really so I settled for a piccolo latte. As you know I’m not a fan of really hot coffee but this coffee was lukewarm, which was different.
The service was excellent. Really personable and friendly.
The flavour of the coffee was ok, and if you like a donut w your coffee this is the place to go!
M. K.
Best freshly made donuts. You can see how they make it through glass window. Their donut flavor also included Asian touch 😍 yummy
D. F.
Service was fantastic, quality of donuts was above expectations!! Bought 2 dozen mixed for my family and they couldn't stop raving about how amazing they were.
J. L.
These donuts were super soft and had a more “cakey” texture than others which tends to have a more “bready” texture. We also liked the fact that the different flavours really came through and that the donuts weren’t overly sweet. Highly recommend trying.
m. s.
We love popping in for donuts and coffee during the week. Always fresh. Always delicious. I don't feel guilty eating these lumps of deliciousness.
S. N.
The shop was cutely decorated and looks cosy but not much seats. Although packed full, the service was still great and fast. The cappuccino and the New Orleans cold brew was nice. The triple matcha was surprisingly filling but it was abit too dry and not as matcha as I expected. The Australian honey and sea salt was lighter and the lemon ricotta was refreshing. Overall worth the visit and will go back to try other flavors.
J. W.
Great service and friendly staff members. The atmosphere of the cafe provides a mellowed and relaxing space to enjoy the freshly made donuts.
I arrived at opening and was invited inside to wait in the warmth while the shop opened. There is seating for roughly 10 or so people, though most weekday visitors appeared to be in a rush for a takeaway coffee and donut.
If passing by, you should give this place a try! 5/5 😀
R. G.
Nice place, very small but a cosy atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and kind. Seems to be very popular as after we left there was a long queue outside. My only complaint is there is no hot chocolate for some reason :)
H. J.
Best donuts in Victoria! Huge, fluffy and the flavors are genuinely amazing. I have tried all of the options in Victoria and the east coast and these are spot on! Even just the OG 👌 you will not be disappointed.
T. C.
Dropped in to get some of their lamington doughnuts. Great range of doughnuts. The lamington doughnuts, chocolate and matcha, are very nice and where worth the trip. Hopefully they will do them again.
N. E.
Always a pleasure visiting, we come every time we visit Melbourne. The donuts are always fresh and consistently delicious and the coffee is spot on. The staff are always so friendly and great at their jobs. Overall the best coffee and donuts in Melbourne.
A. W.
Best coffee in Melbourne! I’ve been coming here since they opened back in 2014, and absolutely love the venue, friendly service staff, donuts, and coffee here. If you’re dropping by, I highly recommend trying their Maple Walnut & Brown Butter donut, or the Honey & Sea Salt Cruller - if you love salty/sweet combos these are a must try!
A.
Best doughnut I have had in my life!! The dough is so light and fluffy without the normal sticky doughy feeling when you chew. Great consideration of flavor and not overly sweet 🤤
P. L.
Initially drawn by the beautiful aroma of their baking whilst walking through the little side streets!
It's a small little cafe joint with a beautiful selection of doughnuts and the best coffee I've had during the short stay in Melbourne :)
Will definitely visit again the next time we are in Melbourne :)
L. L.
Friendly staff. Went early in the morning for their fresh donuts. Insta-worthy and mouth watering good. I wish they do other drinks besides coffee
S.
There were so many different types of donuts and I really wanted to try all of them but I settled on the maple pecan donut. The donut itself was really fluffy but with a slight chew. There were a lot of nuts on it and the flavours were on point. Really enjoyed it.
B. G.
I found this place by complete accident but I’m so happy I did, best doughnuts EVER. The Australian honey & salt was out of this world and the Cinnamon & Cardamom ring was fluffy and subtle. Coffee was great and the shop itself is so pretty and you can watch them make the doughnuts too which is very entertaining.
d.
The BEST donuts in all of Melbourne, presented alongside excellent coffee by some of the loveliest, most personable and professional staff I've had the pleasure of being served by. Go here. You will not be disappointed.
E. Z.
Amazing, amazing & more amazing to put it simply. Located in Melbourne CBD I arrived at a very busy and vibrant donut store.
Lots of people around but plenty of staff to take and fulfill orders. I appreciate the clear glass feature that allows you to watch the masters at work.
Obviously went with a six pack which featured...
- Vanilla Bean
- Lemon Cheesecake
- Earl Grey and Rose
- Maple Walnut
- Matcha
- Cinnamon, Cardamone & Sugar
Left speechless at how good each individual donut tasted. Pure perfection!!!
I will definitely be back in a heartbeat!
M. L.
Very tiny store but excellent customer service. Donut was pretty big which is good for $4+ a piece.
The coffee was very smooth.
Sitting in store you also get a glass of carbonated water. There are only 4 small tables though and very busy.
K. T.
Small place, tasty donut, not too special, but definitely worth the money! Great staff, really lovely and really good coffee! I would definitely come back and have another coffee and donut here.
D. L.
I love these doughnuts. I've only tried the vanilla plain and the seasalt one, but both were so good! The plain one was the best simple doughnut I've had, dense, tasty, fresh. Don't miss out on this experience!
C. B.
Greeted by really lovely staff and had one of the most delicious donuts I've tasted, and I've tasted many a donut. I normally avoid a long black in a cafe for fear of a bitter coffee but this one was a dream. Go here for a delicious, quick coffee served with a smile and an incredible sweet treat.
L. M.
Amazing gourmet donuts and great coffee. Good place for a quick break if you can grab a seat. Has a modern feel to the place and everyone is keen to serve you. The smell of the donuts really tempts you to eat more than you should...
V. H.
Best donuts, best coffee, best people!! If you're looking for something amazing to send someone in lockdown, Shortstop is your place. Thanks team!
J. L.
Delicious donut and coffee. The staff were very friendly. It’s a must place to go to get your sugar level up!!
P.
I love this place, in the middle of a lane way, quiet and comfy. Nice coffee with donuts, everything was just right when I visited this store in the afternoon.
L. K.
Best donuts in Melbourne. Incredibly delicious, not too sweet where every bite is divine. Great coffee too!
A. A.
Loved the honey & sea salt cruller and triple matcha cake donut. Nice ambience and staff.
L.
Absolutely delicious donuts, although a bit pricey. Worth it!
Y. C.
The temperature of the coffee is perfect. The beans are from market lane but I personally think they did even better (might due to the temperature). The size is smaller than a usual regular size, but the quality can definitely offsets it. The mocha donut is perfect to me as well, as it is not too sweet and also i can taste the mocha.
L.
There was not many kind of donuts left when i visited 4pm. But staff recommend me maple walnut, so i had. It was super tasty and sweet. I want to try the others.
I hope they have lots of tables🥺😭
N. M.
Coffee - got a large takeaway flat white on Thursday morning. Had a predominantly nutty flavour, laced with honey notes and with a light and balanced mouthfeel. Finish was short, with the honey flavours lingering then leaving just a hint of bitterness.
Decor is minimalist without being harsh and the staff were very friendly, polite and helpful. Top notch service and professionalism.
Donut - fluffy, moist and delicious. The hazelnut chocolate topping was rich and smooth and all round awesome.
Will definitely visit again when next in the CBD!
E. O.
I'm all about this place.
The best facet is the donuts, they're well thought out, their fillings and icings include real ingredients rather than being just sugar and colouring.
There peaches and cream donut was legit. It was a fantastic dough, not to thick and not so thin that it disintegrated in your mouth. It also wasn't excessively sweet, which took nothing away from the flavour of the filling.
The filling was stewed peaches, that had been rendered down to a peach jelly, and injected into the doughnut with a lovely vanilla cream. This doughnut was 10 out of 10.
There were other types of donut also, everything I ate was of a great standard.
Get there early though as they can run out of your favourites!
The coffee is a medium roast, which is not my jam personally, I prefer a dark roast, but for a medium roast they do a great job.
They're not cheap, but as mentioned their products are high quality and worth it.
Get down there and get your donut on!
S. L.
The doughnuts were really good but the coffee was normal.
I guess it’s a better place for eating than drinking.
L. M.
The best fresh donuts in Melbourne as far as I'm concerned. There is nothing quite as good as a fresh honey & sea-salt cruller from Shortstop.
C. A.
friendly staff, unfortunately coffee was meh (not a fan of market lane). had the australian honey and sea salt cruller and loved every bit of it! very interesting texture and every bite was filled with sinful grease (in a good way) 🤭 definitely not for the faint hearted or calorie counters!
M. W.
Donuts. That's all I can say. Delicious amazing donuts. I love their standard sugar donut but with their ever changing menu they have a donut for everyone.
r. a.
I had 2 flavours( cinnamon 3.5 /5 and red velvet 2/5) both of them a little bit heavy, they do not have the structure of doughnuts, cinnamon a little dough and the red velvet tests more brownies than donuts. Overall the place is cozy4/5 , friendly staff 👍🏾👍🏾
C. L.
Very good and attentive service by staff. Not to mention the reason to be here.. donuts! And the coffee is awesome to go with the donuts
K. P.
Although a little pricey, it's super worth it. $5 for one of the best donuts I've had which they could reasonably charge up to $7-8 for. Great quality coffee too. Would recommend.
A.
Small little shop with limited seating. Excellent coffee and donuts. They have regular flavours plus new/seasonal flavours. Very friendly staff.
M.
really friendly, great donuts and coffee. would recommend the matcha donut and the Australian honey donut is unique - kind of like a big gulab jamun
F. F. F.
The only place to get donuts in Melbourne.
The dough is like no other.
The service is impeccable.
A. W.
Friendly and quick service, really nice atmosphere, and the doughnuts are INCREDIBLE! Very fresh and extremely tasty. I highly recommend the maple walnut and brown butter doughnut. Prices are totally worth the product.
J. Z.
Cakish double matcha donut, so good! Not overly sweet and so much Matha flavour!
T. O.
Great donuts in a hole-in-the-Wall cafe. Went early in the morning and didn’t wait at all. Donuts were light and sweet- some of the best that I’ve had! Recommended.
J. B.
Great coffee and donuts! Small, cosy space inside with a nice ambience and, best of all, a view of the kitchen. We will be back next time we're in Melbourne.
N. P.
I've had these donuts when their super fresh- the flavor combinations are great, The gingernut crunch got me through my pregnancy cravings... The New Orleans Ice coffee makes for a perfect pairing.
However my latest visit here was a bit off food and service. Could of just been that kind of day... who knows.
S. L.
Really friendly service and the donuts and coffee were great. I had the red velvet donut and even though it was decadent, it was still not too intense, super delicious. I normally drink soy coffees, mainly just a preference though, it's worth knowing that they only have limited milk options, just organic whole and skim milk I believe. They make their own bottled iced latte and I'm so glad I ordered it, was a little sweet with the added vanilla, but it was just the way I liked it.
S. K.
Currently on a bit of a whirlwind “Eat my way around Melbourne” trip and after a few pictures of where I’d been and what I’d eaten, a friend recommended Shortstop as a “must try”. After peering at the treats in the cabinet, one of the staff recommended his favourite which I bought, inhaled(YUM!)and had to return to buy one for my partner who had been at a conference all day. Top Spot, will definitely return before flying back to NZ
S.
Very tasty doughnuts!! Very fresh, so they do not last long. Plan to eat asap. Only purchase on the day and as close to eating them as possible. They're pricey but lovely. Nice coffee too but a bit on the small side.
H. i.
Shortstop’s doughnuts may not be cheap but they sure are money well spent. Choose from crispy crullers, airy and soft raised doughnuts or the denser and rich cake doughnuts. Whichever you choose, you will be guaranteed of the texture is second to none.
The flavours are spot on here. Classic flavours such as vanilla bean or cookies and cream will appeal to the masses, or try something different such as the earl grey and rose, or maple walnut and brown butter. Whichever you choose, you won’t be disappointed.
A. H.
Really nice coffee and delicious donuts. Wide selection of donuts availablem. Limited seating. They sell coffee in 250g bags. Also range cold brew and iced coffee in take away bottles.
E. A.
Mmmm donuts!!! 🍩 Delicious wonders from short stop donuts. My fave was the cruller with seasalt and honey and the maple walnut and brown butter! So moist inside! 👍 They have so many that I need to come back and try them all hehehe!
P. D.
Definitely not cheap but worth every dollar - light yet not compromising on the flavour, definitely something you would not get sick of eating halfway through. You could say I regretted buying only just 2 flavours.
S. L.
Can I be honest here and say it's just average? 🍩🍩
Got the Australian honey with sea salt. It's like drenched soggy churros. The one we got we felt it was pretty old and it's very soft & airy (not in a good way).
Maybe we ordered the wrong one (?) we have no idea. haha 😂😂
Y. G. P.
Shortstop is rated as one of the top coffee joints in the area. Approaching it from La Trobe Street, the laneway and shop facing (not to mention the rainbow cheese toastie shop next door) provides ample opportunity for an aesthetic Instagram worthy photo.
Entering the small shop, a glass window allows you to see the pastry chefs at work preparing the 12 flavours of donuts offered for the day. We ordered a honey and sea salt crueller and a maple walnut donut with a flat white.
Both donuts were fantastic and have found their way into the pastry cabinets of several others cafes around the city we visited. Market Lane Coffee beans are used here though the flavour isn't as pronounced as that from the original Market Lane Coffee in Queen Victoria Market.
Additionally no alternative milk options are offered here so I wouldn't recommend it for the lactose intolerant.
Overall, a good place for coffee but a great place for donuts. P.S. it's an awesome place to surprise that significant someone that has a diabetic tooth!
G. G.
Great donuts and coffee, I always try to visit when I'm in Melbourne. Would recommend to anyone
Y. J.
I always have a great experience there. Love their doughnuts and especially their coffee donuts. Staff is also very friendly. I also bought a bag of coffee beans from them. They store the Market Lane beans there. Very easy to dial in and very good tasting cup out. Staff also helped me out in understanding the recipe for it. Please check them out but leave me some doughnuts!
F. W.
I strongly believe that Short Stop donuts and QV Market donuts are the best in the city. Short Stop has super interesting and delicious flavors and I love all of them! If you love donuts you have to visit this spot.
A. K.
The maple glazed walnut donuts. All the way. They may be $5 each, but they're totally worth it. One of my favourite places in Melbourne. In all seriousness.
P. W.
Great coffee and delightful doughnuts in bright, Nordic style cafe near Hardware Lane.
E. K.
I found this place a few months ago, which is extremely unfortunate... to my waistline. I am a huge donut fan and find myself popping in frequently, would recommend their peanut butter concoction donuts which are only available on Fridays 😋

Always delicious, we never regret a visit here when we are in Melbourne. I often like trying their specials as they get creative and have flavours you wouldn't think work well together (they always do though)
J. C.
Great coffee, yummy Donuts, friendly staffs!
Highly recommend this cafe and I think here must be one of best cafes in CBD! : )
A. P.
Really really friendly staff, just wanted to chat. Range of original and interesting doughnuts and good coffee.
Not much seating as this is a grab and go kind of place. They also didn't have and hot chocolate, not sure if that was a normal thing of they had just ran out that morning. 12 bucks for a honey and sea salt doughnut and two lattes. Pretty good!
D. C.
An excellent coffee experience, smooth and not too bitter. Donuts were quite delicious. Likely we’ll be back again tomorrow.
N. T.
Nice little place to drop into near Melb Central. Big and tasty range of donuts, as well as top notch coffee. I don't know if the photo does it justice, but it's an Aus honey and sea salt, and it's tasty AF!
S. B.
Good coffee and plenty of doughnut varieties to chose from. Pretty popular among coffee lovers.
R. T.
Delightful. Sweet. Simple
Just saw it hidden in the corner. A simple pastry store but with really big flavor products. Their prices are very reasonable for a place in the city.
There isn’t much sitting so do keep that in mind if this is a place you want to check out.
H. L.
Best donuts in Mel, not too sweet and friendly staff.

Hands down BEST donut in Melbourne. Chewy on the outside but soft and rich overall. Maple Walnut & Brown Butter donut was my absolute favourite! Such a rich flavour without being too sweet.
K. O.
Awesome donuts that are crafted with skill and passion! Always go there when I'm in Melbs! Awesome
R. M.
Honestly, by leaps and bounds the best doughnut shop in Melbourne. They even make the best crullers without the hour long line. My only gripe is they don't have their maple bars as a mainstay.
M. M.
They use Market Lane coffee beans.
It's a small cafe. Doughnuts was great!!
F. C.
Delicious donuts, the honey and salt donut is iconic and a must-try!
Staff are always super friendly and warm
Y. L.
Small but great coffee. Had maple walnuts donut, sweet. Will try others next time
D. T.
Nice donuts as always, best donuts u can get in Melbourne imo
F. H.
Welcomed by the friendly staff. Coffee creme caramel donut is our favourite. Need to warm up a bit the donut, if you do take away.
J. C.
Tried their cold brew and was impressed. If you need to share a drink with the wife or the lady who can't stomach black, the white cold brew might be your best compromise.

Very nice atmosphere, nice for a short coffee and doughnuts break. Very friendly staff and delicious doughnuts.🍩 ☕.
J. C.
Honestly the BEST donuts in town. The service is always great, as is the coffee. Try the iced coffee - so yum. The donuts are delicious and the flavours are amazing. You never feel guilty after eating them! The self-care packs are wonderful too :)
G. R.
Not generally a fan of doughnuts, these are great with light, fresh dough and interesting flavours. No mass production here.
P. L.
The coffee was good, and the donuts were fresh and tasty!
Love the spicy apple one!!!!
O. R.
Just above average fair here. Good value at $5 a cake, matcha cake donut was quite bready and the egg nog was just a glazed star with a bit of rum spice on the top.
M. S.
Would have given 20 stars if I could!
AMAZING donuts in all sorts of unusual flavours. We had Salted Coconut with Yuzu & Kaya & Earl Grey with Rose Petals - both were SO yumm.
Service was exceptional. We were given free mineral water before we had even ordered plus the lovely lady helped us find a chemist nearby!
We will be coming back here EVERY time we are in the city!
J. H.
Some really delicious flavours & a great selection! Not too expensive. The salted honey donut is truly addictive 😍
C. K.
Absolutely the best doughnuts I have ever had. A must visit in Melbourne!
Q. L. (.
Not a big fan for donuts or any kind of sweets but I gotta say the honey seasalt donut was pretty nice. Goes well with the filter coffee there.
H. R.
Had the walnut brown sugar donut. Its actually the best donut I've ever had
V. M.
Just awesome - this doughnut hit the spot and found out a new Valentine's Day menu starts tomorrow. Guess I'll have to come back to check it out.
S.
The cinnimon doughnuts were pretty nice just i dont like the smell of the place
N. W.
Fantastic donuts if you're happy to pay a slightly premium price for fresh
N. K.
Donuts are great but coffee is so so.
K. S.
A nice cozy place to sit down & enjoy a donut with a coffee. Their donuts are nice & simple, unlike their main rival Donut Time, who can overdo their donuts.
J. M.
Lovely doughnuts and coffee with friendly service. Food was extremely fresh but you are buying premium doughnuts so -1 star for value.
C. A.
Really LOVE Their donuts!
If you wanted to grab some snacks…this place will be awesome!
M. G.
Amazing donuts! Great service from the staff
S. L.
Friendly staff, tasty donuts and well-made coffee! What’s not to like? Well the queues can be a deterrent and there’s not much seating.
L. Y. X.
a wonderful stop for coffee and donut, please try the cider donut which is the BEST!!
C. M.
Had the matcha donut and it did not disappoint! It was delicious. This was the last matcha donut, sold out early afternoon so get in quickly.
S. W.
Great donuts, not overly sweet but full of flavour. I strongly recommend the honey and salt. Very welcoming staff and beautiful spot for a coffee.
J. Y.
Always amazes me. The best donuts I've had in Melbourne, and great coffee. And I'm a donut connoisseur!
R. H.
My absolute favourite place in Melbourne. It is my first recommendation when friends and family ask where they should eat when they are visiting the city. Each week there are different flavours and of course the classics (maple walnut is so so delicious.) The coffee is as good as the donuts and the staff are super lovely.
C.
Very busy coming here on a Saturday afternoon. Service was a bit slow, but had a variety of specialised donut. Had the matcha which was ok.
J. M. C.
Awesome shop with a tasty variety of donuts. Coffee served goes very well with these delicious pastries.
G.
Loving the donuts as well as the coffee over here!
A. V.
Amazing coffee and donuts! Ordered a cappuccino which was very smooth and creamy, and had no bitterness whatsoever. As for the donuts, I had Vanilla bean, Cinnamon Cardamom & Sugar, and Rhubarb Cheescake. They are all tasty, fresh, and decently-sized, especially the Rhubarb!
I. M.
Great Donuts & happy, friendly staff. Also a great spot for a mid-ride break 👍
R. Q.
Enjoy a range of sweet and sticky delights while watching their making. Good coffee makes it a popular spot for students and local workers.
C. W.
Parking impossible - donuts fantastic - coffee delicious
S. D.
Great doughnuts 🍩 Open in Lockdown. Good coffee too.
I. “. F.
The donuts are amazing! Super fluffy and full of joy. Just a warning they don’t offer any lactose free ‘milk’ options for your coffee. A bit strange... but the donuts are of course beautiful.
A. F.
Great service, great selection of donuts. Can't be beat
A. N. P.
They just awesome and great coffee and donuts ❤
D. Y.
Visited from interstate and glad I was informed of this gem. Not only do they serve amazing coffee and donuts, the staff still managed to provide excellent customer service even when busy. I really appreciate how they focus on the donut texture and bringing out real flavours of the ingredients instead of making overly sweet donuts. Will definitely be back!
A. A.
Great donuts with decent coffee. Efficient staff try to keep the line moving as the store is a little small with limited seating. I'd recommend getting the infused iced coffee or sea salt donut. The prices are reasonable for Melbourne's standards and pretty worth it!
M. Y.
Pretty exxy donuts. Daniel's Donuts/Donuteria are still on top.
G. Z.
Fantastic coffee and donuts! Best I’ve had in Melbourne!
T. T.
As always never failed to satisfy. Fluffy donuts, sweet fillings and coffee. They use Market Lane beans and they are amazing! Ordered glazed donut and sea salt crueller. We managed to get a table and served with glasses of water. Very friendly staff and nice small shop to catch up with friends.
M. M.
Stumbled across this joint by accident and the donuts lured us in. Staff were quick to address us, explaining the different types of things they served. We got the new orleans coffee donut which was the most amazingly soft and delicious donut I’ve ever had. Will definitely be coming back to this gem, and bringing my friends too. Amazing!
A. K.
Love the coffee and donuts!! Staff are always lovely. Recently got some donuts delivered, fantastic just like in store and got to try so many different flavours!
T.
Great donuts. One may regret the lack of choice (still 10 seems plenty enough for me to choose from) but I'd rather have a few good one than an average hundred...
D. S.
Great choice of donuts, very friendly staff, will visit again.
S.
These donuts are absolutely amazing, hidden away in an alleyway, this place is a real gem and must try while you're in the city. I try to grab a honey and sea salt donut when I'm passing by, although slightly pricing, the donuts are a work of art and worth every cent. Haven't tried the coffee..
L. H.
Best donuts I've had since I left Los Angeles, but very expensive. The fresh peanut butter is also amazing. Please bring back the bacon maple log.
B. A.
Try Australian Honey and sea salt! It is just beautiful. It tastes like “Burma” or “tulumba” desert (Turkish) but has a sharp saltiness that makes your tastebuds confused. I highly recommend it.
C. F.
My favourite donut spot in Melbourne! The staff are always amazing and the donuts change fairly regularly so there's usually a good mix of old faves and new.. I can never leave without a more than one 😂 Really cute instagrammable fit-out as well with some seating options inside and outdoors. Love this spot!
T. C.
Really high quality doughnuts, the flavours rotate every few months but they’re different and usually delicious. I recommend the maple brown butter, the New Orleans iced coffee crueller and the Australia honey and sea salt crueller. These are amazing!!
T. G.
Amazing place. Had the orange and pistachio donut.. I honestly can't get over how delicious it was. Went back next day for a lemon, pear and Myrtle filled donut.. I liked it but not really my style. Will be back frequently for the orange one. The staff were really lovely.. everyone looked like they actually enjoyed their job which added to a pleasant atmosphere.
J. P.
Donuts were delicious! Great service, Tommy was very helpful, spent a lot of time talking to us and gave us advice about places to see in Melbourne. Definitely need to try these donuts if you're in Melbourne!
N. O.
My friend brought me last week.
Simply delicious and amazing!
I no longer need to venture to Daniel's, Lune or Moon.
Will return soon.
F. C.
Came back here after 5 years to satisfy my 5 year long craving of their earl grey rose donut. It was too long a wait but oh so satisfying! Service is spot on and super quick! Coffee is okay but we weren’t there for that.
G. J.
Best place for donuts in the city. Always friendly and greeted with a smile. Coffee is always on point too!
H. Y.
The staff are super friendly and wonderful1and helpful when you just can't seem to decide.
Don't even get me started on the donuts!! They're made fresh daily and you can even watch them make the donuts on the spot.
Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a sweet treat! :)
A. O.
The Australian honey and sea salt cruller. Best donut I've ever had in my life.
G. D.
Great donuts!! I recommend any of the crawlers
K.
Earl grey and rose doughnut is recommended! No doubt the best doughnut I’ve ever had 😊
C. D.
My fave gourmet donut shop so far. Like another reviewer said, it's not just the toppings that make their donuts good - the actual dough is done properly as well and you can taste the difference between here and the other fancy donut places. Their coffee is also very good, and is not just an afterthought unlike other donuteries. The staff are friendly and welcoming, I really enjoyed coming here and will be back!
W. M.
Good donuts with mild coffee.
D. b.
Funky little place, very friendly staff, good coffee, awesome donuts that you can actually watch being made. I prefer good actual donuts rather than over-the-top fillings and toppings on a lacklustre donut, but these are actually really good donuts with just as good toppings and fillings, as well as a range of yeast, cake and old fashioned styled donuts. Way better than some of the more popular donut stores
B. M.
Always flawless. Incredible doughnuts every time, really nice staff too. There could be a hair more seating but as if anybody would stay away based on that. You'd sit your grandmother on the floor for a single taste of that sweet sweet Earl Grey and Rose.
M. C.
Was not worth buying and getting the donuts delivered. Boring and lacked flavor. The matcha donut just tasted like a normal donut?
A. M.
Really fantastic and well made doughnuts. We went pretty standard with the cinnamon and glazed, but even they were unusual and special in their own way. Can't wait until my next visit!
D. L.
Love this place - visits used to brighten dreary weeks at work. Made a special visit for their 6th birthday and got a birthday cake donut 🍩
M. S.
I am a huge donut fan!
Very nice, fluffy and dense donuts. Interesting flavours and designs.
Small and clean but Mr Short Stuff missed out on this trip sadly.
Nice and clean cafe.
Limited to just coffee and donuts but still a lovely place to relax.
S. N.
The most amazing Donuts I've ever eaten. The range of flavours are sophisticated and delicious. I wanted to try them all. Think earl grey and rose; and maple, walnut and brown butter. I love the coffee they brew as well - Market Lane Coffee.
M. E.
Amazing donuts. I will frequent this cafe for the walnut brown butter donut, if there’s anything I’d recommend it’s that.
C. F.
Is like being in heaven - if heaven has coffee and donuts.
H. R.
The donuts here are fantastic looking and there is a gourmet feel to them. However, the taste is on the drier side and sometimes there is a bitter aftertaste to them. They are more cakey than doughey. Not to my taste but it is individual. The staff however are very friendly and attentive and the decor is very modern and clean.
L. T.
Nice and tasty donuts. Although only one type of milk so I'd maybe go elsewhere for coffee.
Also as a side note it'd be cool to have the menu of donuts on a sign hanging from the ceiling. You don't know what donuts are on offer until you're at the register so the wait times feel super long because of this reason.
But it's only a small issue 🍩
E. P. A.
The 'Maple walnut brown buttter' donut was really nice ❤️
M. W.
Been here many times!..
Never disappointed, the doughnuts are always fresh, tasty and well made. The coffee is up there with the best in Melbourne. Better yet, short stop is tucked away off Elizabeth street so you’re away from the hustle and bustle for a bit.
J. G.
Ordered a cafe latte and a maple walnut donut and both were exceptional. Cute cafe, good decor, friendly staff - this is as good as it gets.
If you’re looking for a new Melbourne laneway gem, this is it.
C. V.
Not only do Shortstop have amazing donuts, the coffee at this place is absolute top notch.
s. a.
It's actually a hidden Melbourne treasure. One of the best donuts i have had here. Situated at one of the uncommon laneways, this place provides a donut for every tastebud and the taste to cherish. Limited seating capacity and mostly takeaways are a good choice. If you're a donut lover, you should surely stop over here. 5/5 for me.
A. W.
Wasn't really a fan of the cake doughnut, but so glad I gave them another chance with a raised doughnut! A totally spontaneous decision to turn into the alley, but as this proves, sometimes the best results come from the most impromptu of choices. Got the crowd favourite Maple Walnut doughnut, and the topping while a tad too sweet for my liking, I absolutely adored the soft and fluffy fried dough. Loved the crunch on top as well. Friendly and patient employees while I was there too. Will have to return to try out the other interesting flavours!
z. n.
They always have the best donuts; love going in from time to time to try out the new awesome flavours they come up with.
A. M.
Super delicious!!! I really appreciate how they were able to accommodate me with same day delivery today (I normally pre-order but I completely forgot today). Wonderful customer service, reasonable delivery fee and most important of it all, super tasty!!!
A. A.
Small cafe. Good service. Delicious donuts
S. N.
So many doughnuts, so little time.
The team was very friendly, everyone of them said hello when we walked in!
J. L.
Probably the best donuts in Melbourne. Much prefer it to Doughboys, Walkers Donuts and Daniel's donuts.
They are always cooking in the background so you know it is fresh for the day. Also, counter staff always have a smile on their faces.
Y. C.
It's always my old time favorite, Espresso with Australian sea salt and honey donut.
E. V.
Great doughnuts tucked away in the laneways off La Trobe street. Long black coffee was nice, but the star was the mango and coconut doughnut. I should have asked for a fork and knife, but managed to easily consume the delicious treat with only a minimum of mess.
S. L.
Can't go wrong with donuts. Especially not shortstop ones. Their raised are my favourite. Coconut lemon meringue is intense, but worth it. Can't go wrong with a cruller either. Their quick rotation of donuts week to week and day by day keeps the shop interesting and delicious! My favourite place. Also serving Market Lane Coffee.
S. T.
A Melbourne friend brought us here and we fell in love with their donuts and coffee. Really delicious and we were so satisfied we bought 2 boxes of donuts home. Highly recommended.
S. H.
The best donut I've ever had. The "basic" cinnamon and cardamom donut let's you enjoy the flavour of the donut. Also had the plum which was delightfully sweet and tart.
S.
Fantastic, and lovely staff. Gourmet doughnuts which are very classy and not too sweet, and great coffee. They use organic milk. These guys really put their heart into the food and what they do. Top pastry chefs work here. You can even see they cook beetroot and plums for one of their special doughnuts.
B. L.
Awesome coffee shop. Simple concept that really works, they only do two things but they do them really well. The donut selection is amazingly different yet delicious. The coffee is smooth but not too creamy. Overall this place is great and a must try.
J. M.
Absolutely beautiful doughnuts. The Earl Grey and Rose is very unique, I really liked it. My personal favourite is the Maple Walnut and Brown Butter, and I don't even like Walnuts! The coffee is quite nice as well, can't fault Short Stop.
W. v. d. B.
Great coffee, nice staff and amazing donuts. Perfect to start your day here
K. v. L.
'Where can I get the best coffee and doughnuts in Melbourne?' I hear you ask. 'Shortstop' is my reply. The friendly and dedicated staff make every coffee perfect, every doughnut a delight and every visit a wonderful experience. A rotating menu of gormet doughnuts will have you doing extra exercise to justify how many you want to eat. Their cold brew coffee is also fantastic. Shortstop is a magical, wondrous haven of deliciousness.
M. H.
Delicious donuts. The force driving my boys riding their bicycles for 20kms to the city. My boys top favorite is the one with bacon, apparently they can easily sold out and only available on Wed and Sat. Will order online first next time. Very friendly staff too. Absolutely recommended.
R. T.
Every time I'm in Melbourne I always make sure I stop in here for some of the best coffee and donuts you can find in the CBD. Coffee is smooth, donuts are imaginative and delicious and the staff are always polite!
m.
Delicious flat white and tasty donuts (among the better ones that I have tried). Can’t recall which three we had but one tasted great, the second was above average while the third was way too greasy/oily.
G. S.
Donuts are yummy but after paying $85 for 20 donuts which came in 4 separate boxes a big carry bag would have been great. Apparently they don't have them. Can't be an environmental thing because the donuts were in thick printed cardboard boxes.. Made it very awkward to carry.
Anyhow I order a coffee but they don't do skim.. Really???
Anyhow like I said their super expensive donuts are nice...
E. R.
Good quality range of Donuts, excellent coffee. Busy place , very attentive staff. Must a place to visit when in CBD.
J. F.
The donuts are really fantastic - you got to try one (or five) yourself
J. D.
Exquisite artisan donuts for around $5-6 each. Interesting variety on offer beyond the usual (such as earl grey and rose) all showcased front of house and freshly made in store. Small bar-like set up to eat in with a coffee or take away. Busy place with friendly and hwlpful staff, great place to go for donuts in Melbourne.
J. F.
Tasty donut. Tasty coffee. Friendly staff. Went here couple times during my stay in Melbourne, and yes, it is a must visit place to start your day when you are living near Little Lonsdale Street.
K. S.
Nice doughnuts in a trendy setting in the CBD, but way over priced. Probably five for singles and couples, families not so much. Coffee was good, but too cold, and sitting area was small and crammed. I also think that their range is limited, considering they only sell coffee and doughnuts.
R. I.
The best donuts in Melbourne. Can't get enough!
K. C.
It was great. Earl grey and rose donut was awesom, strange but really good. Staffs were friendly. If you dine in, they give you a sparkling water which get along well with donut.
N. R.
Impossible to rate this place highly enough. Incredible, original donuts and smooth coffee with a sparkling water if you're eating in.
I only wish they kept all of their tasty experiments going year round. My all time favourite so far? Tiramisu, sublime!
C. C.
As most people are donut fanatics, l also confess to eating a few. I donut shop hop all over Melbourne, Syd and Qld, and also had my fair share in Europe, l'll even confess to working in a donut shop for 5 years and part owning one for a few. These donuts are absolute gold, well made(little oily but heck, what donuts aren't oilly) a little pricey but you pay for what you get and they are a decent size. Went back the same day about 16:30 however the availability on options was limited as they mostly sold out. This is a good thing right! Of course but not for me. Get in early before l do....l wont be advertising which day l attend though!
Definitely will be trying all on the menu. 2 down and plenty more to go 👌👍
B. B.
Best combo in the city. Batch brew coffee + Australian Honey & Sea Salt CRULLER.
E. B.
This donut-gasim left me speechless...
Staff are mega friendly and everything is made super fresh. They definitely bring 'donut chef' to life.
Coffee has a nice acidity, smooth texture and a great aftertaste.
Don't plan on leaving in a hurry as the post donut food coma hugs you on a cold Melbourne day.
C. C.
Impeccable service coupled with good donuts and coffee. An excellent spot to duck in for a quick cuppa and donut treat!
S. S.
Short stop do delicious doughnuts with grown up flavours!! The doughnuts themselves are soft and light, and you can just tell they are super fresh. I can't remember the exact name of mine but it was lemon flavour, with a ricotta cheese filling, and it was perfect. Very different from what you'll see in many Melbourne doughnuts shops, they're not flashy and full or crazy flavours. They are understated, well crafted little masterpieces. The coffee is fine but a little bit of a let down compared to the awesome doughnuts (it's not a cafe though and the many focus here is definitely their baked goods)
A. R.
Have been meaning to come here for so long. Glad we did, the place itself is gorgeous in a little street tucked away in the city . It's clean cosy and oh so pretty. The donuts were light and fluffy, we had the matcha and maple walnut and brown butter. Yummmm. Then the staff , well so polite and efficient. Thank you for making our first visit so enjoyable. Will be back next time to try a maple bacon, I'm intrigued by it.
A. E.
Best doughnuts I’ve ever had, will definitely be ordering again
L. G.
BEST DONUTS in Melbourne! Hands down. Amazing selection, freshly made in front of your eyes, filling, delicious. Plus they serve Market Lane coffee.
Staff is awesome - sometimes they sneak and extra donut in your bag just because they love and appreciate their customers.
M.
Their doughnuts are light and not too sweet, which I much prefer. They remind me of Japanese doughnuts so I will definitely be coming back. There’s limited seating though so best to take out.
T. R.
Donuts are delicious! Many different flavours to chose from. Only down side was that they don’t offer any dairy alternative milks for coffee!
S. K.
A funky little back ally stop with strong coffee.
They have a variety of donuts to snack on with your coffee, with limited edition flavours playing into the mix.
Outdoor bench seating provides a great chance to have a breather in a busy cafe area.
K. R.
someone recommended the doughnuts here and I could see why. they are super tasty with my favourite being the lemon filled one. there's only a couple of spots to sit down so we got it takeaway. there is a bit of a line but it moves quickly and is worth it.
L. K. (.
Doughnuts and crullers are to die for. Nothing overly sweet and amazing texture. The crullers are also simple and light. The staffs are really friendly and will help you out if you can't decide which to choose. The place is super cute and minimalistic which is a plus.
H. R.
Incredible doungnuts and coffee!!! Best coffee I could find in the CBD!!
Z. Z.
Love the Market Lane coffee and lattes here along with the latte art :) The donuts themselves are a bit overrated, hit or miss and really dependent on your taste, the different textures and flavours are all so different. So far I liked the matcha (cake) the best. The cruller was a big disappointment. Could taste no honey or sea salt, it was just one big oily blob of eggy batter to me. Filled strawberry was a bit gluggy and sweet. Maple walnut was okay. Rose earl grey was okay. I appreciate that they use good quality ingredients and the donuts have nice aesthetics but overall taste and flavour as far as sweet treats go..."meh".
T. K.
One of the best coffees I’ve ever had! The donuts are specialized and the flavors and textures are to die for! I had the lemon meringue and it is one of the best creative donuts I’ve eaten to date!
Y. Y. (.
Best donuts I’ve never had 😍
K. T.
Whenever I go to brunch on Hardware Lane, I always make sure to bring my friends to Shortstop for a sneaky post-brunch dessert treat. Big fans of the crullers in particular, especially the classic honey and sea salt one, but they're constantly changing up the menu and it's always exciting to see what new flavour they've come up with in the time I've been away. I'm drooling just thinking about their donuts again!
B. L.
Walnut maple doughnut is a bit over rated. Despite being the popular choice I found it quite plain and cakey in texture, but this won't stop me from trying something else next time! The cold brew coffee was awesome, sweet and smooth!
C. B.
Went looking for good donuts in the cbd and not only were the donuts amazing but the service was impeccable. Everything we wanted was at the table before we even asked for it and was recommended an incredible cold brew!
P. T.
Distinguished donuts and very friendly services. A little pricey but okay with sitting there n order a cup of coffee to go with. Bought 10donuts for special occasion last time cost me almost 60, I liked it and have been going back often
R. H.
Above average coffee and donuts; not quite as amazing as some reviewers make out, but still pretty great. FYI - this is one of those places that don't do coffees with skim milk, because they want you to drink their coffee the way they think it should be drunk. 😒
G. P.
Very hip place to get coffee, minimalist, but welcoming. The coffee is amazing and the doughnuts unusual and intriguing - just like the decor. Space for maybe ten people to sit inside (high padded stools or a low hard wooden bench), but plenty of open floor space for people standing waiting for takeaway orders. Room for wheelchairs and the doorway and footpath outside are accessible.
D. J.
Friendly staff, in a cute little shop. My favourite doughnut is the early grey which is a standout in Melbourne for texture and flavour. Consistency is a hit and miss, but overall good for your normal doughnut consumer.
G. B.
Our trip in Australia was coming to an end when we finally got the chance to wander around and discover Melbourne. We heard that do..ugh..nuts were a bit of a thing. We didn't know at first, but we really ended up with a craving for them. We tested some places and we finally found the pearl. Down a side street of Little Lonsdale St, there is the 'Short Stop' you must do.
Raised, filled or cake-like, these donuts are worth a try! Up to 12 different flavours daily which change every month! From burnt caramel/fennel/sea salt to rhubarb crème brûlée, you will find one to your taste.
We advise you to go much before closing since they sell out on some days. Our ultimate flavour was the Earl Grey/Rose cake-donut. Quite different from the raised donut you might be used to, this one has the soft texture of a cake and so much flagrance heightened by the fine tea blended with the rose buds.
To complete the experience, we tasted their brewed coffee - hot or cold. The latter is bottled on site: classic black coffee or a sweeter twist.
Perfect staff, great service, old school playlist, we are in love! Don't wait!

I cannot fault Shortstop. I have come back here a number of times and have never been disappointed. It has become one of those shops in the CBD that everyone seems to know about and with good reason. These guys take doughnuts to a whole new level. I look at the variety and think "how did they even come up with that?". Nevertheless, the food is amazing and simply a must-try. Coffee is from Market Lane, so you know you're in good hands. Try it out.
T. I.
Absolutely love the donuts sold here. They're more then just simple donuts, but taste sensations. If you're in the city and love donuts, you have to try them.
J. T.
5 stars feel like buttkissing but 4 stars feels inadequate for a place like this. The laneway to enter appears dodgy, but once you stumble upon its bright interior, sadly with limited seats to sit down during peak hours, the unique, shiny glazed donuts lure you into temptation and is capable of breaking the strongest of wills when it comes to determined diets. Coffee is great too. Don't get me started on the exceptional attentive customer service.
G. W.
Disappointing donut for the price. The walnut brown butter was good but the others are soso. Coffee was good.
K. S.
Tasty donuts, nice coffee and genuinely pleasant service.
c. g.
Earl Grey & rose my everytime favourite ❤️
S. S.
Food was great... staff seemed a bit sad.
B.
Delicious donuts and filter coffee, plus a good chill atmosphere.
M. H.
This place has some of the best doughnuts you will find in Australia. Hands down incredible. I highly recommend the Maple Walnut & Brown Butter doughtnut 🤤🤤🤤
E.
Always amazingly delicious, friendly service, authentic American donuts in super creative yummy flavors. Love you guys!
B. T.
Good coffee, but not many options to sit down if you're after a table
P. M.
The best donuts I have ever had, a little expensive but worth trying as a treat
E. L.
Ahh! Possibly the best donuts I’ve ever had!!! Must try! Love their earl grey and Australian honey with sea salt! Possibly their all time best
C. V.
Yummy doughnuts and lovely team!
T. D.
I love this place. Best doughnuts I've had in Melbourne. The Boston cream is off the hook. Could do with a little more seating but I guess it only seems that way because so many people want those bloody doughnuts.
S. H. k.
I loved all the donuts very first time. But it’s greasier compared to other donut places. Maybe I would go grab once more but not often.
a. w.
I went there around 3pm and they ran out most of the doughnuts. There's only two, choco and chai and I chose choco since I can't eat cinnamon.
Skin was light taste more than It looks. Peanut butter cream was bit too much for me but still wasn't too sweet. Good quality and nice services. I'll take matcha one next time.
J. W.
Friendly staff, good coffee, and some of the best doughnuts in the city. Get the cruller, and you won't be disappointed.
A. S.
The dough is light and soft and the glazings I tried were sweet without being overbearing and sickly. Cappuccino was nice and creamy too. I highly recommend this small but light and airy laneway gem. Staff were very friendly and knowledgable as well.
T. W.
Absolutely amazing iced coffee, the best I've ever had! And don't get me started on the donuts, oh god the donuts! Extremely friendly service also, very welcoming vibe :)
C. F.
Cute little hidden coffee and donut place near Queen Victoria market. Maple walnut donut is amazing, one star taken off because they dont have any dairy-free milk options and the honey and salt donut was awful 😮
a. c.
These donuts are so good!!! Sold out very quick for some flavours. But the place need more seats. Standard coffee.
A. C.
Amazing speciality coffee & house made doughnuts. There is a few seating options available in store and a bench outside. A trendy cafe hidden away from all the hassle of the CBD. Would highly recommend
T. T.
Friendly fast service . Excellent donuts . Excellent coffee
G.
OK, this needs to be made clear; doughnuts amazing, coffee woeful.
This is frustrating because I can understand why people consistently highly rate the shop, but it's misleading on the coffee front. I look for coffee places and trusted this would be ok. Milky and bad. Doughnuts, wow.
Z. M.
Snug cafe good coffee (piccolos without kids though for t/a) donuts super big and crazy good!! Soft light cake with excellent flavour not just sugar.
J. M. P.
One of my to go donut place! My list is Peanut Butter Caramel and Choc Cake, Dark Choc and Peanut Butter Cream filled, Triple Matcha, Red Velvet, Australian Honey and Sea Salt, and so on!!
B. H. Z.
Good coffee... To much sugar
F. H.
I just tried one of the doughnut, I didn’t like it this much , but I’ll give it another try. Nice staff which is a point for them 👍🏻
M. A.
Beautiful and tasty donuts, coffee was super delicious and wasn't lava hot, actually drinkable temperature like they should be!
P. D.
Yummy salted caramel and chocolate donut. I got a flat white too. Total was $10. The place doesn't have much seating room so better suited for take away.
E. G.
The store, the service, the flavour ideas, everything 10/10 buuuuuut the actual donut!! The dough it's self is more like an iced bread roll then a donut. Seriously just change the dough recipe and they would be perfect!
K. O.
Been getting donuts here for the last 3 or so years, they never disappoint and service is always great. Just wish they had a little bit more seating. Complimentary sparkling water
N. M.
The coffee was good, I got myself a cappuccino but it was a bit too lukewarm.
Donuts are fantastic! I was about to complain about the price until I realized how filling they are, left me satisfied after two.
A.
Had the maple walnut and brown butter, and the pandan coconut. So gooooood. The place was incredibly busy though and we got a table to eat in only by luck. Would 10/10 go again when I am in Melbourne again next
s. s.
Ooooooooo Australian Honey & Sea Salt crueler is the best!!! But so many other great hits and speciality day donuts plus $1 refills on batch brew - how it should be!!
김.
gosh! i love their coffee
K. f. P.
Delicious Doughnuts even take away.
K. A.
Small and cosy, with a warm atmosphere. Really good coffee, but the doughnuts are definitely stand out from the crowd! Would certainly visit again when in Melbourne
M. N.
perfect donuts really lovely staff especially the register worker tommy chong. really good coffee, recommend to any one in the area. loved the maple bacon donut
R. M.
This place is amazing! The donuts are unbelievable and the staff were so friendly and patient with me while I decided what to order!! (Its quite hard to choose only one!)
E.
Cute little place with good coffee. I found the doughnuts a bit too sickly sweet for my taste but if you've got a sweet tooth you'll probably enjoy it.
C. G.
Best doughnuts in Australia. Thank you guys for all the hard work to producing such beautiful food. Food quality and service to match.
D. D.
I've tried literally all of their donuts, they are without doubt the best in Melbourne! Great coffee and super friendly staff. 5/5 for sure!
M. C.
Simple is the best! The coffee and donuts here make brilliant balance when mixture. The atmosphere and music suit the little shop especially. The only problem is that too many lovers!!!😋😜 lol
K. J.
Best donuts in the world- quality ingredients and made fresh daily. The staff is friendly, and the outdoor bench seat is perfect for sunny weather!
X. L.
Best donuts ive eaten in my life. Strongly recommend the sea salt one
P. G.
The best donut in Melbourne CBD. My favourite is cooking and cream filling donut.
B. D.
Had a New Orleans iced coffee and a Aussie honey and sea salt cruller which were both absolutely divine.
P. U.
Worth your short stop. It’s located in the CBD area, not far from Melbourne Central. They provide various doughnut with reasonable price. Coffee is good as well.
안.
So good doughnuts! Love this place
R. P.
If you want your eyes to start rolling backward from just a bite of their vanilla bean doughnut, the Short-Stop café is worth a stop! The coffee with a doughnut combo has touched on a marketing formula that many cafes have not attempted. I would assume that they've taken a "Doughnut King", stripped it down and re-modelled it for today's modern street café culture. The coffee profile was a little too roasted for my liking but it complemented the doughnut well.
Only one little suggestion - get a Bonsoy (soy milk) alternative to the poor cow milk.
Overall,Well done!
J. S.
The donut was honestly one of the best donuts I've ever had and as I was eating it I was already making plans to go back.
G.
Coffee was great.
Menu states its organic but didnt see any certifications being displayed. Was in a rush so couldn't check properly. More research needed to confirm 😂 !
Also bought 6 pastries.
One was outstanding, the others were ok.
Pricing higher than average
W. F.
Besides some incredibly innovative donuts, I always return because of the always helpful and friendly staff ☺️
J. Y.
Decent donut and coffee somehow sides nicely with the donut.
Staff was nice always, but not a lot of sitting places (so lives up to its name)
S. S.
Awesome donuts and coffee, but the donuts are too expensive...
L. Z.
Beautiful coffee and donuts!
M. M.
Fantastic donuts, great coffee, friendly service, it's a small thing, but even when busy both staff at the counter still looked up, smiled and said goodbye using my name when I left.
J. L.
The best donuts!
T.
Amazing coffee, amazing service, they are always so friendly. Don't even get me started about the donuts. I just WISHED they would do soy milk. Ppplllssssss?!
k. f.
VERY special donuts available for the occasional self spoiler, with menu flavours changing semi-regularly to keep you guessing. Coffee is also of a high standard.
K. V.
Awesome
H. M.
Neat and modern looking cafe. It hasn’t got much seatings available every time I walk in so I’d have to do take aways. Anyhow the donuts and coffees are amazing!
a. a.
Great place. Donuts was so delicious.. Must try... Tommy was very nice and helpful and went out of his way to provide a quality service.. Thanks Tommy
S. P.
Was okay, wouldn't recommend.
Donuts being a bit hit and miss with some being okay and others not even reaching those standards. Coffee was decent without quite making it to good.
A. P.
Surprisingly good coffee here. Doughnuts were a little disappointing, dry and flaky. Then again we went at 3pm and so maybe they weren't quite as fresh?
R. S.
Possibly the friendliest team of staff in Melbourne - they all go out of there way to say hello, remembering your name & coffee.
Great coffee & donuts - what more could u want?
H. L.
Very friendly staff and great products in a secluded alley way.
S. T.
Gluten makes my stomach hurt but that doesn't stop me coming here at every available opportunity. Amazing donuts and great coffee too.
V. D.
Really good donut & a nice simple coffee. Highlight for us was the customer service, very friendly staff, specially the the girl at the counter, whom actually care for their customer with a smile.

B. B.
Genuinely boutique donuts, very clean and modern setup. The staff are the most professional people I have ever purchased donuts from and you can see the donuts being handmade in store
S. Y.
This place never disappoints. Amazing , quirky and delicious flavours. Must try in Melbourne. Super friendly staff
A. S.
Go for the donuts and nothing else... the coffee is pretty bad and they only had dairy milk
P. Q.
A good espresso & tasty donuts in a nice (albeit limited seating) venue. Full range available at 9:30am & coffee was quick.
C. W.
Too many choices of doughnuts. Will be back. Didn’t like the coffee though; found it left a souring aftertaste. Go for the doughnuts 🍩
B. D.
Easily the best doughnuts in Melbourne. If I'm in the city and only have one thing to do - I go here. Killer service. So friendly.

√ Fit out (bit of Melbourne vibe x Japan style)
√ Service (great chat x quick service)
P. N.
The Australian honey and sea salt cruller is, as far as I'm concerned, magical.
J. C.
Doughnuts were not overwhelmingly sweet (a good thing), coffee was solid and customer service was excellent.
P. B.
Great coffee and tasty donuts. We made the mistake of having the kids share a donut (they're huge) and left with children crying for more.
B. M.
I will always make a detor to come here for a donut coffee combo while in the city. Very cute place and always a favorite when I have friends in town
