Some reviewer complained about a 30-min wait on granola. Just remember we can choose to eat granola at home. Toasties on the other hand! Option of salt, pepper and hot sauce would've made this incredible (pickled onion with feta was genius though).
I.
this is a little gem close to the train station. Atmosphere is so relaxing and calm, staff is welcoming and the place looks like those country style cafes that i personally love! coffee is okay
M. K.
Food is good, set up is cool but I'm sorry to say that the staff at this Cafe do not give 2 fks about the customer. Just put a smile on your face and be happy.
I'm a regular here so this is not a one time experience.

Adjacent to Northcote station, Herbert is in an excellent location. The coffee and service here are decent and the atmosphere is friendly. I had the Boris toasted sandwich, which was delicious but oily, and a little on the expensive side ($18.50 for a standard coffee and sandwich feels a bit steep). Still, I'd recommend it, especially if you're looking to avoid the High Street crowds.

The Herbert Cafe is fantastic. I visit regularly and am consistently impressed by the amazing coffee, great food options and friendly staff. It's been a welcome local treat during covid-times. Before that we were always accommodated promptly, even in large groups.
I definitely think their coffee is some of the best I've had. It's always delicious.
I.
Good coffee and a decent venue to spend some time, much more space outdoors than inside so if it's great if it's sunny. Good use of space. Pretty busy with the brunch trade, expect a bit of a wait for coffees, but not a big deal if you in for a chilled morning with friends of by yourself. Food looked alright has it was coming past.
C. D.
Lovely friendly staff. Delicious food and coffee. Staff were helpful catering for my dietary requirements. Good vibes all round.
T. B.
The coffee and the food is great, the staff is less… Hardcore hipsters that would go above and beyond to make you feel unwelcome. Visit only if you don’t have any better choice.

Like the Steppenwolf's encounter with the Magic Theatre, at first glance The Herbert Café may not appear to be for everybody. But no one likes to miss out. And many who came calling while I was breakfasting there brought a variety of best friends. There's a small carpark adjacent and it looked to as though there's wheelchair access.

Strong Soy Latte tasted blend :P
No coffee art for me, but a very pretty one for the table next to me :(
One staff at the counter was very friendly but the one who was making coffees looked angry when I asked a question. Maybe I reached out to them in a busy moment :/
However, the place itself is very pleasant for working or studying :)
It was a good option to escape home office today :)

Had the best Space jam toastie. Coffee is the best. Very casual place. Staff are great.

Great phenomenon and great coffee. I normally go there in the morning and feel like it’s lots of people. But today I went there around lunch time, wow, it was heaps of people hanging out there!

My #1 local. Miss this place so so much. I don't miss much about Melbourne, but I really miss the coffee and atmosphere of this cafe. So lucky to have lived around the corner! Amazing lattes, amazing banana bread and loved them toasted sandwiches.
G. 1.
Great coffee, great eggs and ham, and great ham and cheese croissants!! If it's on the menu, grab the Apple Rhubarb crumble with Mascarpone, it's amazing.
D. A.
Beautiful place with great outdoor seating, coffee, and food! Convenient next to the train station, with friendly staff and lots of cozy indoor and outdoor seating.
H. P.
Super friendly staff and fantastic coffee!
K. P.
Not UNfriendly. Just not friendly.
I’ve tried to give this place a go so many times (it’s at the end of my street). The coffee is good the food is adequate but the staff are so disengaged. Always feel like you are inconveniencing them!
Handy because it’s near the train station and cute outdoor area, just vaguely unfriendly staff (which isn’t a dealbreaker for everyone but it is for me).
W. K.
Good coffee. Cool space. But staff always seem run off their feet. So much so that at times it feels like you’re inconveniencing them by asking for a batch brew top up. The food is satisfactory but frankly nothing terribly special.
A. B.
Love love love this place! Follow their Insta; their staff have a lot of fun so you know this place is good. Always excellent food and coffee !
N. M.
Nice place with some good vegan options. Service felt a bit rude/too cool for school in one interaction, but otherwise was good. Concrete seats outside are cold and hard
T. H.
Good coffee, friendly staff.... Came late on a Saturday and they gave us the unsold pastries at the end of the day. A nice little gesture that they didn't have to do.
N. H.
Great strong coffee and gear small menu items. Croissants are to die for not to mention the granola with fresh cut fruits and honey is a winner.
Hip and small industrial style cafe. Handy little car park out the front, easily accessible by train too. A perfect way to give my friends an intro to Northcote cafe life.
Oh and discounts if you bring your keep cup 🙏🏻
S. G.
I do like the coffee, and most of the staff are lovely. Just the one staff member w short dark hair is consistently off putting. I live close by and will probably start looking elsewhere for a local cafe.
N. M.
I love coming to Herbert the coffee and food are both really good ! Perfect to get a morning coffee before getting the train but it's a real hit and miss with staff members and some can be very off putting and ruin your morning. The lady with the short brown hair working in the mornings in particular is always rude and unpleasant for no reason it seems. Why the attitude?
K. C.
The staff are so friendly here now! I had a bad experience with an older lady here about a year ago, but my colleague said she'd left (fired?) and the new owners are simply great.
DELICIOUS home made strawberry jam too!
E. T.
Cute little cafe opposite Northcote Station. Coffee is alwsys good as is the food. The staff are always friendly and it's a nice little space to chill or to duck into before your train arrives.
L. Z.
My partner and I love this sweet little place! The avo toast (vegan gf options available) is so good and the chai is killer. Some people left reviews about the people working here ignoring them - but we’ve never experienced this. They’re always friendly, helpful, and kind. This is our fav little cafe ♥️

Was 3 minutes until close, I was served like i was the first customer of the day - amazing. A guy wearing glasses and sporting a star wars t-shirt thank you for such high standards & spot on coffee. Merry Xmas and happy new year
N. W.
One of the best toasties I have every had in my life, I highly recommend you try the Boris and add ham.
R. S.
Great seating outdoors and north facing as well. Whether you just want a takeaway coffee or meet friends for a bite it's good alrounder. Transport is easy and it's short walk to the plaza.
J. k.
Loved the coffee here. Can get busy but worth it. Hipster vibes
G. W.
A great place for wonderful coffee and amazing chai lattes. Lovely staff, especially the bearded man with glasses. Food is scrumptious. The jazz music and hipster feel, make this place a really cool hangout
M.
It's a really nice place to sit outside. Their coffee is always made double shots automatically, so that's cool too. You can sit in the garden area and drive there as there's a small carpark. It's also right next to northcote train station. Vegetarian food only too.
b.
It's cute, I like the outdoor seating and planter boxes, and being off High street is a bit more low key. They make nice chai and the menu is pretty good
T. K.
Great setup, wifi available, decent coffee. Coffee used to be always great, now not so much but I think that comes down to my personal preference
J. M.
Great iced coffee! Staff members were very friendly but got a little distracted hanging out together, so was hard to grab their attention.
G. G.
I wasn't willing to try the food because of dietary restrictions, but in every other respect they live up to the claims listed in the description above.
The take-away flat white I tried was so good that I'm writing about it now, months later.
I really should go back.
R. B.
Beautiful coffee and lots of awesome art. Cosy atmosphere, and lovely staff.
V. A.
Very earthly vibe and the staff is super friendly. Food is delicious with focus on local produce and coffee is even better. A little gem in Northcote
G. O.
Such nice girls working there today. Let me charge my phone and told me about a great bar. Coffee was great.
J. E.

Mainly an outdoor cafe with a small cozy indoor seating area. Outdoors is excellent! With many heaters and blankets.
E. S.
Great menu w bottomless batch, can spend hours in the lush courtyard not needing to rush... good music also :)
M. S.
Friendly staff, great prices, perfect coffee. The Glenn Choisey sandwich is insane good.
J. B.
Cute, kitschy space and staff, nice coffee and chai, but extremely slow food service. Half an hour this morning for a takeaway granola :(
K. S.
Great corner cafe with good coffee and breakfast. Seating is limited so be get there early.
A. D.

E. P.

S. F.
Food and coffee are fine. Service is mediocre at best. Staff are surly.
O. G.
Local cafe that I have attended since opening. Recycled industrial architecture / interior design with good coffee / chai, simple menu, and friendly staff.
J. H.
Mushroom burger was super delicious. Maybe just need a couple of extra umbrellas outside as a very sunny cafe.
K. P.
I constantly find myself question my own existence, a place or business should attempt to remove me from said thoughts of exit. This place didn't.
H. C.
Nice coffee and always friendly service. The banana bread is awesome.
