Comments of The Journal Cafe
G. D.
The staff here were wonderful, quick and attentive. They ensured diners were vaccinated and safe. The cafe looks delightful inside, a lovely spot along the bustling Flinders Lane. The food was a little bit plain though.
J. C.
Love the library of books here and it's right beside Melbourne City Library. The perfect place to have a great coffee and amazing baguettes/toasties. A great study place or somewhere to chat businesss.
J. B.
Great service, fresh food, very reasonable prices... bacon, egg and cheese panini with a small coffee.. $7. Seats available. Friendly staff.
A. T.
A bustling cafe, nice host and good coffee. Would prefer the cafe to be slightly brighter, but otherwise, it is a good place for a quick brunch if you are around the area.
M. M.
I really like this ambience and the decor which is retro and peaceful.
Staff was helpful and kind to us.
Just located next to City Library. Chai latte with soy and avocado on toast that we got was tasty and good price!!
S. F.
Beautiful croissant 🥐 better food then across the road. So good I went three times, one morning. Friendly staff, good customer service. Thank you.
K. R.
Great food (had lunch sandwiches). Laid back atmosphere, lovely place to sit and chat with friends.
F. P.
Coffee is good and service is great. Breakfast selection is a bit lean and not too exciting. Food quality is not bad.
l.
Beautiful coffee (ordered a second one straight after), and had the bacon and egg roll with relish. Perfect for a light breakfast and bloody tasty! Would visit again
I. A.
For me, Saturday breakfast at The Journal consists of cappuccino, toast and jam and muesli. I've been dropping in here in and off over many years. It was here that I had my first taste of chai and that experience has never been bettered elsewhere. So here we go again! Glad to report another success!
F. C.
Excellent breakfast. Well presented and fabulous flavours. I was slightly disappointed with my coffee as it could have been a lot warmer.
S. A.
Had a very nice espresso served with a smile :)
D. H.
Very concealed. Very retro interior decor. Staff is ambivalent. Got the worst hayfever ever here to the point I couldn't open my eyes from the ryegrass here though I won't put this against them.
J. P.
Service was excellent food was even better fresh and healthy great atmosphere too!!! Definitely go to eat and drink!
M. A.
Coffee was good and location is perfect!
D. C.
One of the establishments in Melbourne's cafe scene. I visited back on Monday 13 August 2012.
D. L.
Incredible gravalax, poached eggs and fennel salad and great coffee. Nice relaxed environment for breakfast before heading off to work.
J. W.
Offers a quality selection of light meals & coffee, and the staff and location are great. One of my favourites in Melbourne.
N. R.
We are spoilt with better coffee around every corner in Melbourne but other spots don't come close to this space in terms of environment/ ambience. Menu and drinks are kept quality and simple
P. J.
I love this place! When getting off at Flinders Street Station I like nothing more than starting my day at Journal with one of the best coffees in Melbourne. The atmosphere is warm and inviting too - and they provide 4 major newspapers which is an essential part of my morning wake up routine.
A. P.
Great coffee and really enjoyed the smashed avo with poached eggs n feta. Yum!
A. J.
Great place to come and enjoy coffee in the heart of Melbourne. The cafe is very European in atmosphere. Great place to meet people. The coffee is always great with strong robust tones. They also have a great collection of wines and cocktails to wind back too. Excellent covid safe environment as well.
K. M.
Delicious food and extremely friendly well mannered staff
Z. R.
Good food but slow at table service. I sat for 20 mins before someone asked if i needed anything. Then i had to pick up and take the plates myself cause no one saw we had finished because no one was looking.
G. G.
Really great little cafe hidden away at the entrance to the library. Staff were brilliant, truly polite the whole time I was there and spent a whole afternoon. Nice little selection cakes and treats to go along with great coffee. Would recommend to all passing by to drop in for a quick cup of coffee!
I. N.
Thought I’d do a recent update.
This place is my home away from home. It’s always been one of my fav places to go since I first came a long time ago. Everyone knows each other so it’s like a community.
Recently their covid cleanliness plan has been great.
Staff are great as always with the occasional rare one who will ruin it.
Thanki.

A gem for coffee and small tart but service can be slow and seating is limited. Great ambience. Our NZ friends loved their breakfast there also. A hidden Melbourne treasure. Shhh don't tell anyone.
T. L.
Had a generous serving of muesli and yogurt with fresh fruit. The coffee was ace! Will come back for sure.
R. D.
Wonderful atmosphere, warm inviting layout for working or chatting to others. Wide range of drinks and a selection of bakery items on offer. But check opening times as it closes relatively early. Friendly service and the fare is ok by Melbourne standards. The highlight of this place is the space itself. It's popular though, so you may not get a table right away.
A. R.
This beautiful cafe is situated next to the city library, with a familiar warm European atmosphere. The wait staff is the most attentive and efficient I've ever witnessed, they have a good rapport with each other as they do with the eclectic patrons. This busy little hub works like a well oiled machine.
The menu is small but tasty, the cafes priority is coffee and that is outstanding.
I've been here three times in the last two months and not much has changed in the 10years I've been going there.
F. K.
Very Melbourne. It's in the centre of the Melbourne City, and the vibe is totally Melbourne as well. Service was busy during the lunch time, but quite professional. Staff are nice and the coffee (I ordered soy flat white) is brilliant.
Amazing job.
K. D.
One of my favourite cafes in Melbourne. Interesting and eclectic, owned by John who has been on the scene for some 25 years, a long time ago the holder of DeGraves Cafe in DeGraves Lane
G. C.
This has been my go to cafe in the city for over 10 years. Now I work back in the city I visit nearly every day. It is home away from home. Not just beautiful food and coffee but amazing staff.
D. C.
The coffee is good. They have a nice breakfast selection. Seating at group tables is uncomfortable if you are a bit on the wide side like me. There is a cafe upstairs as well that is associated with Journal. It has great views of the laneway.
J. L.
Service was so fast the food arrived before the coffees, not that the drinks were slow. As I ordered a soy hot chocolate, the waiter was thoughtful enough to ask if I wanted soy milk with the muesli as well. A generous serve of the muesli and poached fruit gets us off to a good start to the day. The food was good without being spectacular but the location ensures of a steady following.
K. M.
This cafe has a great breakfast range. Recommend the smashed avocado. Don't get confused by the cafeteria upstairs as this is the first sign you see coming up from Elizabeth St. The Café is on the ground floor - different entrance.
B.
Melbourne style cafe in city library building: Lovely ambiance styled on the library theme. Inviting menu of modern cafe classics. Friendly service. Nails it.
Food ratings:
Croque monsieur 5/5. Outstanding!
Coffee (long black, long macchiato): 4/5.
K. H.
Look, this is a great spot to meet up with people, its cute and lively, bookish but cool and you can get some good basic food stuffs and drinks.
My only real issue is the staff.
Being general, but averaged out over the visits, it adds up to kind of 'meh'. I have always felt like perhaps I was in the wrong place, slightly not cool enough - the staff seem to treat as though they are just about to close and your order is a great inconvenience, regardless of when I have been.
Maybe it's me.
J. M.
Good coffee, great pasta, super service. What a nice little find for lunch.
C. M.
Just visited Melbourne from Sydney and have found this perfect place to unwind & relax. It's atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable even for a single person to dine alone. The coffee and chocolate brownie was great. 10/10 for excellent service ! A Special Thanks to the Manager.
H. W.
I really want to love this place, but I don’t. The coffee is average or, at least, it’s super patchy. The food is ok. The staff look kind of depressed, like they’re slogging through the day before they go to Uni or to pay for their backpacking holiday. The vibe is nice, but really there’s a ton of better places around...
r. d.
One of the best places in the city!
The coffee is good, the food is fresh and delicious!! The staff are polite and always keeping an eye out for someone who needs anything!
Plus having the library next door means there is free wifi all ay everyday! Amazing!
If I could come here everyday I would! Great for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner; or even just a coffee and cake!!!
Enjoy! I know I will be for the foreseeable future!
M.
As I walked in, the atmosphere was a busy pleasant feel, with the cafe having an industrial look to it.
I ordered a small takeaway latte, very strong smooth taste, and was made at the right hot drinkable temperature. Will defiantly be visiting again.
M. C.
Excellent food. Staff were helpful and attentive. Good coffee and really cool retro setting by the city library.
It's a small place but ample seating at mixed communal and private tables.
K. W.
Busy cafe with a funky vibe. Shared seating environment, filled with lots of young people. They serve a solid breakfast and do an excellent coffee. Marked down for their use of ciabatta bread that is way too crunchy and hard.
A. N.
Quaint little cafe next to the library so it's convenient to grab a coffee or a quick bite. Went there for breakfast and they don't have an extensive menu. Went for the eggs on toast and was told there wasn't any eggs left but I got some delicious spicy baked beans instead which I was very happy with.
Would certainly recommend but if you want more variety, might be better to pop around to Degraves Street.
K. K.
Love their food! What a cute cafe with plant based food. Price is reasonable too.
D. S.
Nice place to eat but the menu is scattered around the walls on hard to find or read chalk boards
G. Y.
Hands down one of my favourite cafes in all of Melbourne, and that is saying something. Friendly, attentive staff, a good crown of regulars, easy wifi access from the library next door and overall just one of the best places in town to relax, do some writing/work, or meet with colleagues or friends.
L. S.
Excellent coffee, great service and great atmosphere. World's most uncomfortable chairs if you are sitting at the big tables in the middle, but the coffee makes up for it 😉
S. C.
A long standing city cafe run by the Library. At busy times expect to sit cheek to jowl with others - but that’s part of the fun. Benches and several large communal tables and a handful of medium sized 4-6 person options. Decent coffee and central city priced small meals.
M. P.
Popped in for a quick coffee with a mate after a meeting. Quick service and an excellent brew. ☕
L. H.
A favourite of mine when I visit Melbourne. Consistently good coffee and attentive staff.
R. B.
I needed a place to go. Somewhere out of the rain. Somewhere with a powerpoint. Too early for lunch. Too late for breakfast. I ordered a piccolo and sat by the window. The joint was busy. A good place to hide. The coffee came. Short, dark and hot. Not bad.
P. G. M.
I had a great breakfast at the journal canteen which is separate to the cafe. Food and service were both awesome. A „will come again“ experience!
C. D.
Lovely decor and good coffee in front of the city library. The noise and dirt from Flinders Lane out front makes it hard to really hang out here for too long though staff do their best to keep the venue clean.
J.
Great place to grab a coffee at down an catch up on some work.
Nice spot next to the city library with good coffee. Central location with lots of cost spots so you can get away from the huddle and bustle.
R. B.
Very pricey coffee and not what you pay for. Toasted sandwhiches however are amazing. Service is a bit slow and venue is quite loud so not ideal for conversation but getting takeaway and sitting in the library could be nice!
G. J.
Nice place but a bit haphazard. When we came in it was fairly quiet yet nearly every table had dirty dishes on it.
It was hard to tell if it was table service or not but we sat down and eventually a chap appeared.
He looked and sounded like he'd had about two hours sleep. We asked for two chai latte and he repeated the order of 1 chai, something else and prosciutto....random.
Anyway our chai was nice, as was our chocolate almond muffin.
T. R.
lovely barrista, perfect quality coffee. scored a free one after sharing a story about our newborn, 3days old. pays to be friendly and strike up a conversation, even if its before the morning coffee!
K. P.
Fantastic coffee. Great spot for meetings. Can get quite busy during lunch rush hour but much quieter in afternoons. Friendly staff.
J. T.
I love this place for afternoon tea. They have great service, strong coffee and yummy food. The cakes are always different and aren't loaded with sugar, which is a huge plus.
S. G.
Great find on a recent visit to Melbourne. Hidden in the library on Flinders Lane. Vast selection of delicious breakfast options and possibly the best coffee in Melbourne. Better than any of the over priced and touristed cafes in the surrounding lanes.
E. M.
Fab spot for a coffee or a light bite for lunch. Retro and funky. One of the best tomato and basil bruschetta’s I’ve had in a long time. They have a great menu of bruschettas of all kinds. Great service like everywhere else in Melbourne really. Mlebourne cafes never fail to disappoint.
L. C.
So refreshing to see the same faces here looking after the place year after year. My last visit was on a morning where two staff members hadn’t shown up, but they still managed to serve a full house and gave me a coffee on the house to make up for the wait. This is why people come back.
M. H.
The portions are a bit small for the price and the ice cream served with desert was actually iced confectionery (water based, not cream). The girl who served us was fun and the other staff were full of smiles. Unfortunately, a little over priced.
M. A. R.
Hard to find the place if you need to meet up here because of the absence of proper sign but still its prettt nice. They serve proper tea and coffee which is really good. Service is also nice
s. p.
Great place to hang out, nice atmosphere and comforting background music. Simple quality food on offer for a quality quick breakfast or lunch.
Immediate and friendly service.
Absolutely recommended to visit.
J. T.
Very nice service! Staff were quite friendly
The decor is very warm and homely, but they may be a bit too successful to pull it off now - it was quite loud and crowded.
Their hot chocolate was very nice
S. B.
Wonderful place for a quick snack and coffee. Great service. John has served melbourne coffees for over two decades and his kindness, humour and interest is memorable. Thanks to everyone
M. F.
I have had several excellent experiences here. They have good food and although it is squishy it is made up for by the best customer service I have ever had. Honestly, there is one staff member there that deserves an award. He. Is. So. Good.
M. J.
There are plenty of places for coffee and cake around De Graves Place, and Journal is one of the ones where I most often find myself.
For one, it's convenient to the City Library and the Centre for Adult Education, where I sometimes host meetings. But I don't feel the need to go any further in the area to find friendly service, a lively buzz of other caffienating professionals and illiterati, and a good winter soup.
I think I like that it is indoors and consistent. It's familiar. There are busier, trendier places on Centre Place, but ultimately I prefer the genuine-ness and stability of Journal.
F. B.
What a great place for a cuppa and a chat. Nice place for a casual business meeting. Also right next to the library which is handy if you need to get some quiet work done.
A. F.
Great little place for a quick bite. We stopped in for breakfast during a long weekend in Melbourne and were pleased with our choice. Pleasant atmosphere and nice staff.
F. H.
Very nice and friendly service and the cafe has a nice, positive vibe to it. Haven't tried the food yet, let me know if you did.
S. S.
Great coffee. Excellent food. Lovely ambience. Excellent and friendly service! A little on the loud side for conversations but still doable.
D. H.
As a Melbourne frequent visitor. I always look forward to coffee at the Journal.
T. H.
Update: came here again for some reason. Earl grey was good. Strong fw not so much. Avo & lemon bruschetta with feta was tasty. Real stingy tho.
Previous review 1y prior:
Waitress didnt know what deserts they had. Coffee inconsistent. Strawberry and whitechocolate 'cake' was UNEVENTFUL. Takeaway iced chai wasn't sweet (wasn't asked for sugar)
A. D.
I've been here before and it was really nice, maybe a little pricey but worth it for the chilled atmosphere and decor. Tried to come back but the hours haven't been updated for the summer and I came into the city to closed doors :(
S. W.
Great find. I have never been here before but needed a spot to sit before an appointment in the city. Great coffee and friendly staff
D. B.
Coffee is good but not excellent
N. B.
Good coffee and canteen environment.
J. S.
My wife and i had the best experience here at the journal cafe.
coffee was great and being from sydney we wanted to find the best possible place in melbourne. We found it!
S. H.
A very nice place to sit and draw breath and have a revivifying cup of tea and a delicious iced latte. I read my kindle and sipped my drinks and had a very recuperative time while I waited for a friend.
S. W.
Lovely place with lovely service. The waiter that served us our takeaway coffee was so nice. Coffee great 2 !
M. K.
Iced Chocolate is the best. But service is sometimes inconsistent. Sometimes they'd just ignore you until you actually come up to the cashier only to be told it's table service :p
n.
Like the atmosphere here and friendly staff. It is good place to work on laptop or read. They serve drinks, tea, coffee, pastries and small bites.
N. P.
Great vibe, nice staff who know there stuff. Good coffee but great chai! Really nice place to take a book and loose an afternoon
M. R.
Love this cafe and the fact it's next to the City Library. Very cozy and relaxing spacious with retro furniture in the heart of Melbourne!
W. W.
Hiding in the CAE building, Journal is relaxed, communal tables, simple Italian-inspired food (summer - a soup, main, salads, rolls, bruschetta etc) well prepared with excellent ingredients and attention to detail. Add a small range of good-value local and Italian wines by the glass, good coffee and you'll wonder why you would go anywhere else for a quick bite?
S. W.
Good little spot right next to the library, coffee is great. The menu is a little limited but that's fine as this place is about the coffee and the vibe.
R. B.
Loved the coffee. Venue was OK. Felt too busy and disorganized. I went around 2pm, mid-week. I'd go back for take-away.
B. W.
This is my happy place, it's so comfortable and cosy on the central tables underneath the reading lights. Their chai is great, such a production and feels like a real treat.
A. N.
Some of my friends like this place and told me they had the best coffee in Melbourne here. However, I didn't have such experience.
T. R.
Friendly, cosy, awesomly located. Coffee is consistently good. Food is not very exciting but enjoyable.
E.
Nice cafe just off Degraves st with trendy library vibes. A good place do a bit of work and have a coffee or a bite to eat.
M.
Great location and good atmosphere with a feeling that people like to sit and chat at this place. Some good things on the menu.
S. R.
Excellent coffee good food our waitress was such a pleasant young lady.
J. E.
Has a very dynamic atmosphere but only supplies fairly small cups of coffee with no option to upsize
E. C.
Cosy bustling cafe with nice coffee and good food. Very casual and friendly. Service with a smile
T. J.
Best hidden cafe gem in Melbourne! Also, they have an authentic tea service and excellent pastries!
G. d. S.
Good coffee, small-ish food selection. A bit on the expensive side but it does have a great atmosphere.
S. M.

High quality coffee and delicious food coupled with great service. There's also free WiFi from the library.
S. G. S.
We went there 3 days in a row. Cheap and different menu. Coffee was exceptional
A. E.
Wonderful staff. Small, but a fair few seats so that's always great. Really, really nice people working here.
J. B.
Been going here for over a decade, the coffee is great and don't even get me started on the Portuguese Custard Tarts
D. K.
Great place, atmosphere, coffee and friendly service. I love it.
G. T.
Once I drew my friend as a lion queen, she wore glasses and rode around on a fat black spider and her name was Queen Simotaur. - Journal Cafe
B. H.
For me, this is THE place to get a coffee in the Melbourne CBD. I love the atmosphere too. The only problem is it is hard to find a seat sometimes.
C. V. D. S.
Great coffee place, but can be a little crowded & there are limited seating options
P. P.
Great coffee, wonderful people. Place can get a bit busy though
F. A.
Good food very good coffee nice ambience great placefor light lunch
I. B.
Where have you been all my life?? This place is a gem right in the heart of the city for any lover of typical European cafes.
J. W.
Journal is always an interesting place for good coffee and an eclectic crowd. Food pretty good too!
R. J.
It's a cute spot with nice food, a bit too much froth on the flat whites though.
R. R.
Second time l went there it was just as difficult to get a table sharing with another person busy noisy business people one of my favourite cafes to go to
a. T.
The perfect cafe for writers & I don't mean "starving artist" writers, I mean actual published writers and journos. Classy.

A. E.
A great place to read and have tea or coffee in rather a peaceful atmosphere.

A popular institution, deservedly so
W. A.
The Journal is a bit of an institution. The staff are always friendly and the food and coffee good. Patrons range from students to seniors and as a place to meet it's reliable. Can be crowded, be prepared to share a centre table or side bar.

Good strong coffee. Nice vibe. The front sliding door can be easy to miss!

I like the place and their chaï latte is really good!
It was really busy and a bit noisy. The manager was often asking if we wanted something else...
Otherwise good spot to work on your computer with the tables.
