Comments of The Old Milk Bar
T. M.
The food was nice. My partner had the Eggs Benedict and she enjoyed it, my daughter had the hot cakes and loved it, both were big portions. I had the Colombian breakfast that said it came with a chocolate shot but it was a weak Milky hot choc which was false advertising. Coffee is roasted in-house and is a dark roast which just tastes burnt and roasty with a hint of chocolate in the magic I ordered. Check it out of in the area for the food not for the coffee.
J. L.
Nice relaxing little cafe, food is great atmospheres good...
M. B.
Fantastic local joint! 1 piece of toast per egg, amazing! But served with butter knife to cut sour dough? Got my morning workout in carving out bites, next time byo serrated knife.
G.
On a very hot Australia Day, it was nice to relax and have fantastic food with friends. The Spicy scrambled eggs were delicious and very filling. Went well with an iced latte.
F. M.
Great coffee & bacon & egg roll. Quick takeaway service & super friendly staff. Also great covered outdoor space if dining in.
T. C.
Big Breakfast with grilled halloumi delivered is fantastic.
S. T.
Went to the old milkbar today with a friend and my first impression was that the location is awesome, away from the busy lanes, at the corner of a street amongst the residential houses.
The courtyard area seemed busy so we decided to sit in. The serves were pretty quick in helping us and take out orders. We ordered
•The cold pressed juices (from juice culture) aa it was a warm day, we got the Rawberry & the Circus.
The circus had a nice citrus taste to it. Definitely the highlight of the whole visit.
For food we got
• Dr. Marty’s Crumpets
The presentation was a 10/10. I loved how there were different coloured element that made it look good. The crumpets were nice n moist. However, the
•Cinnamon Waffles
The presentation was okay, felt like it was trying to hard to look like their competition. The waffles looked like they were store bought..and the sour cream was completely unnecessary. Every element on the plated tasted really good, but only separately. The overall dish was a hit n miss.
The overall experience was okay. The good thing thou, that they have zomato gold.
J. G.
Yep. very good overall. Was supposed to get there for brunch but got there closer to lunch so I had the burger. My companions had the chicken sandwich. They both said it was great.
My burger was pretty darn delicious. I opted for an iced coffee which was good.
Good service. A bit exxy but it's worth it.
R. J.
Nice quick service, really big portions and reasonable prices. My favourite place for Sunday breakfast
E. Z.
Visited The Old Milk Bar Cafe with a friend with high hopes.
The juice was delicious! My Crumpet dish was presented lovely. However the flavours of the dishes seemed off.
Was nice to be able to take advantage of Zomato Gold!
M. B.
My partner and l enjoyed our first visit this morning. Friendly and prompt service and great food. We'll be back
W. C.
Great place with good coffee and original ‘smash arvo’. The fried/boil egg is very nice and the almond really made it pop. Photo turned out a little red but that’s because I was under red cover. The service was very quick too. Overall would highly recommend and come back again to try other things on the menu.
P. G.
So Nice to find, a lovley cafe in the suburbs. Coffee, decent menu, great staff wonderful casual vibe. Can catch up for coffee with friends, or catch up on work and watch the world go by. All abilities access however not rails in loos or disabled loo.
L. T.
Excellent busy cafe with a great all day breakfast menu and beverages. Looking forward to returning many times into the future.
S. K.
Felt a little put off by the owner upon entry but the rest of the staff were so lovely!
The menu is great and very reasonably priced.
We got the eggs Florentine which had a great addition of a potato rosti sort on it. Unfortunately the hollandaise sauce tasted very vinegar-y so avoid if that’s not your vibe!
Lovely space to eat outside however and we had a great breakie!
E. M.
Good coffee, good food, good service. Love it.
D. W.
Cool suburban cafe with a woody/industrial feel. Very welcoming service and friendly atmosphere. The kids liked the shakes. Eggs benedict was a good size. I ordered the Thornbury hot dog which was well presented but very very heavy on the pickle and too big to eat without cutlery. Cutlery was really only a butter knife which made it a tough job. Overall an enjoyable experience. We'll be back (I'll drop the pickle off the order next time).
G. P.
Nice little suburban cafe. Coffee was decent enough and the food was fresh and reasonably priced with good service. Really pleasent spot for breakfast but the food didn't knock my socks off.
P. W.
A great find on the edge of Thornbury. Good coffee good tucker and friendly service. Can't ask for more. Lucky for me it's my local. 😀
M. R.
Popped in for brunch last week, fantastic eggs Benny!! Nice food great coffee and friendly staff
A. A.
The Old Milk Bar is consistently good and I swear they have the quickest barista in the northern suburbs so it’s a great place when you are in a hurry and need a coffee!
T. B.
Warm dog friendly place to have brunch. The waitress was very nice and gave us the option to sit outside under heating or inside. I had ordered a coffee and my partner ordered a Chai latte. The milk foam for both drinks was very fine which provide a smoother pleasant sip. I ordered the eggs Bene the pulled pork that bedded the poaches eggs and sauce was delicious. Good service and good food, if I'm in the area again I would return to try the milkshakes.
t. b.
Jan 2019 - just wanted to update still fabulous coffee. I had two long blacks just to make sure the first wasn't a fluke. And the chilli scrambled eggs where YUMMY. I would love to take home some chilli jam. But will just have to come back more often. Oh and so good with me and the dogs. Moved a table so I could sit with them.
April 2018 - Best coffee I have had in a while. Smooth and lush. Oh and T.O.M.B breaky is perfect combination size! 💖😍
M. L.
I enjoy this Cafe. The serves are very generous. The only downside to my visit is that my eggs were a little overdone. Other than that, very tasty!
M. D.
Good food, reasonably priced. Some customer service training to waiting staff might not go amiss though. The food is tasty though.
R. K.
Friendly staff and good coffee, chai and food. I really like the bacon and egg roll. It has a delicious chutney/sauce, and is toasted to perfection. Cakes are yummy too. Easy to park in side street if nothing available out the front. It was previously called Miss Succulent.
Hand sanitiser upon entering and QR Code sign in as well as pen and paper
J.
This is my favourite local cafe to have brunch. Everything is amazing.
C. D.
Great coffee here and the put the effort in to make it look good too. I haven't tried the food but from what I saw while I was there, I will definitely order a nice meal in the future.
A. M.
Great local cafe. Menu has just the right amount of options with great selection. Weive nearby and eat here frequently and have never had a bad meal.
Coffee is always good and comes hot..always a bonus! The staff can get a little overwhelmed when its busy but nonetheless it wouldn't put me off as they're very friendly and accommodating and also dog friendly.
B. L.
Food Quality: Average. I ordered scambled eggs with msuhrooms and spinach. I don't think anyone could go wrong with thos safe option. My friend had loose leaf tea with honey and apple crumble muffin. She loved the loose leaf tea but was diappointed the muffin wasn't made by the cafe, but mass produced somewhere else (she's a bit picky).
Service: Accommodating
Pricing: Average
Ambiance/Atmosphere & Location: Local and homey, with spacious interior both inside or outside, undercover. Plenty of parking on Dundas street main road or on the smaller side streets.
Conclusion: I'm a local and come here at times when I want a spacious place that is cozy, casual and does not set limited seating times. Really good to catch up with friends here.
m. b.
Great place, the food is delicious, great caffee and a lovely staff.
J. A.
Such a good off the beaten track (main shopping neighbourhood strips) spot. We shared the soup of the day and some fries (with chilli salt) and it was all delicious. Nice sunny spot even in winter.
G. N.
Breakfast is a real affair here, great coffee, feels very festive, nice breakfast selection
L. L.
Good service, delicious food with an unpretentious atmosphere
J. N.
Weekday visit at about 12.30
Friendly staff with relaxed atmosphere
It wasn't clear if we were to wait to be seated it wasn't busy so we found our own table
We were soon brought water and menus
Again not clear if we're to order at the counter or if someone would come to our table to take our order.
We had the TOMB Breakfast and Steak sandwich - both well presented and very filling. The tomatoes were really tasty as were the chips.
T. F.
Coffee 2 days in the a row and both very different and not the best.
1 way too hot and bitter and then 1 way too cool and bitter.
Will try again tomorrow, 3rd time lucky.
Sorry.
N. K.
Lovely cafe, great atmosphere and friendly staff
M.
Really yummy burger and pleasant easy going vibe
S. B.
I stopped by here on my way home from Brunswick one afternoon for a coffee and it was a lovely experience. For a roadside place the coffee was surprisingly good and the food was lovely. The atmosphere is quite nice and they've done a fine job of setting the place up to be welcoming and comfortable regardless of the weather.
I'd thoroughly recommend it if you're stopping by - I do plan on coming back here for a longer sitdown in the future, so stay tuned!
B. B.
This is a cafe on a large corner in a quiet suburban part of Thornbury - they are so cool in this part of town that the primary school down the road plays jazz music, rather than a bell to signal recess time (could hear it during my post-burger stroll).
Inside the cafe, really nice atmosphere. I found the coffee to be a little bit more Italian style than Melbourne style (tiny bit too strong and hot) quite nice otherwise though, with a nice texture to it. I ordered the beef burger. The real meat lovers out there would love it for sure. It's got two rissoles in it - I would have thought you could take one of those out and replace it with a nice thick slice of tomato - felt like it needed that. Felt like I needed an hour's walk after eating it! It came with french fries, with an aioli which was tangy and delicious. The staff seemed nice and friendly. A lot of originality in the menu, and plenty of items that sound delicious. There's about 6 things on there that made me feel like I want to come back and try that next time...!
m. d.
Great quality of food! Service is 5 starts.
J. B.
I feel like this place does a good job of capturing the Thornbury spirit more than anywhere else. It's got an eclectic selection of food built around a few good staples, and the coffee is surprisingly not-too-overpriced for the location.
High recommend!
W.
Great place to have a nice little meal. It is somewhat expensive but definitely worth every dollar you spend. It gives off a great vibe and staff are very friendly and treat you well. If you like meat then you will love the "T.O.M.B Beef Burger," which is a huge burger full of every ingredient you could want.
S. L. R.
Coffee is good, the new owners changed the atmosphere totally. Clean. But the original teapots with plants growing in them and eclectic tables and chairs were much more charming than the predictable uniformity offered now. Still very good for the North.
s. w.
I enjoyed the decor & my puppy was welcome! Well priced, good customer service.
J. M.
TOMB aka The Old Milk Bar is a relaxed, chilled old milk bar on Dundas St in Thornbury. You can sit 'outside' which is really inside with the covered over the top of the cafe and see-through plastic to keep you warm in the winter which I bet can open in the summer which it's much hotter!
The food is fresh and delicious and the coffee is strong and aromatic. Highly recommend for a chilled afternoon!
D. S.
There must have been a change of owners or chefs. Used to love their soft shell crab burger but has been removed from menu. Still great food and coffee available. Haven't been as often as used to be.
b. s.
Really like this place. Interesting and varied menu, friendly staff.
J. W.
Haloumi burger and a flat white. Very nice!
M. M.
Fantastic food, service and again FOOD! Always blown away with the consistently awesome food, shout out to the black tempura calamari 🤤. Definitely a star in the Thornbury/Preston food scene and there is something for everyone on the menu 😊 would be great to see more vegan options!
M. S.
Their refusal to 'split bills' is what puts me off going there. 6 work colleagues go and if you don't have cash one has to cop the lot. It's lazy on their part. So I go to the counter, order and pay first.
However the food is excellent.
G. M.
Food and coffee are fantastic. Soups on the winter are brilliant and the Smoked Chili Scrambled Eggs with their own Jalapeno Jam is a cracker. Can be a touch pricey though. Most food items are close to $20, so a meal and coffee generally means little change from $25.
J. S.
Super chill cafe - kid friendly
E. S.
Wonderfull Cafe, very modern. Quality food and presentation.
That's the TLDR version. Here's the longer version.
The Old milk bar is very nice. From the moment I entered the low fenced outdoor 'section' I felt positive. The place had a nice 'feel'- If you get my meaning. A more experienced and sharper person would comment on what was actually aesthetically pleasing about the place. But for me it's the instinctive feeling- the 'feel' of the place. It felt casual but modern, with a hint of rustic thrown in.
As soon as I saw 'bacon and egg sliders'- I knew it: "this place is going to be good". Not 'burger' or 'muffin'. Slider. Modern, sleeker, very current. However that is not what I ordered- I got the T.O.M.B Breakfast (it's an acronym for the location, not because of any subtle hint about what the meal will do to you. Like I initially thought.) Basically the standard big breakfast.
It was all good quality and well presented. Even the spinach was nice and done well. A cylindrical potato croquette also adorned the plate, the sausage cooked nicely to a point where it had a nice crunch.
My tasty meal aside, my eating compatriots got the sweet hotcakes and the avocado smash.
Through the little tastes I got from them, they were both very good as well. It was the presentation that stuck with me the most.
It's almost funny- a tiny restaurant disguised as a Cafe.
M. T.
I’ve been here twice in two weeks, after many drive by’s, I was very keen, but now slightly disappointed, asked for a 3/4 latte, first was great, second less great. Also, first time bought a danish and second time bought two Portuguese tarts to meet minimum spend... on both occasions pastry was stale & hard to chew.
S. B.
Guys, this place just gets better and better every time I visit! I had the chilli scrambled eggs and WOW. I will be having them again soon! This cafe is not afraid to actually put a little slice into their food, the chilli left a nice slight burn on the lips, just the way I like it.
Again, the coffee was delicious. A large cap, HOT. This cafe listens and delivers. I haaaaaaate coffee that's just not enough to drink and you feel like you have to down it in one go. The tall mugs reduce surface area and the coffees stay hotter for longer.
Bubs is in a high chair now and they have plenty available and space to boot!
Mmm thinking about that sourdough now...
V. K.
In love with the Panko Crumbed Eggs, I always ask for extra eggs 😁
E. H.
Good coffee and great staff. Gold to have such coffee so close to home.
As I have been banned from my old local coffee shop, I guess it will be back to this as the nearest one to go to.
Always nice to see the bright faces in the morning, and the magics are strong.
C. P.
Great coffee, a place I'm looking forward to visiting more, when I move closer, however today I was disappointed I couldn't get one takeaway coffee just passing through, because of a prohibitive $10 min, it's ok to pass on the costs of a transaction to customers- I think about 1% or 2%... (I'm happy to pay 20c!). but I'm not gunna buy extra stuff, when a coffee was its self a luxury splurge for me. Soz.
A. D.
I recently went to the Old Milkbar Cafe and tried the Soft-Shell Crab Burger. I found it positively scrumptious. What was interesting about the meal was the side of polenta chips, which I only wished there was more of, as they too tasted amazing.
My wife got the sago pudding, which looked visually stunning.
I was only too happy to help her finish it and will definitely order it the next time I'm in.
I do hope to find out the secret of how they season their mushrooms there, as I always order a side of them when there.
M. E.
My adopted local. Great food, brilliant coffee, with service to match.
The crumpets are divine, and the menu balanced with other good options - I can always find something to eat regardless of what I fancy.
S. R.
Perfect outdoor area. Great for kids
A. H.
The food here is incredible. Serving size is very generous. Cannot fault this place.
J. S.
Nice coffee, good set up, but $16 focaccias!!
Food is on the pricier side
A. S.
Inconsistent coffee is what sours this place for me. When it's good, it's bold, full of body and a great linger. When it's not this though, it's like drinking hot, dirty milk. And, it's 50/50. Can't keep wasting money on the hope it's going to be a good day so I'll get my takeaways elsewhere.
L. L.
Couldn't fault the brunch we had here. Lovely fresh flavoured comfort food, with fresh juice and decent coffee.
S. K.
This our third trip to the Old Milk Bar. It will not be our last. The eggs Benedict are to die for. The serve would have served two people easily and even though our breakfast again was superlative, it wa more than my poor tummy could fit in.
Do yourself a favour when in Melbourne - go there !!
S. G.
You musgvtry the halloumi & falafel focaccia. Coffee was great too.
N. S.
Great little cafe in the middle of Preston / Northcote area. Food quality is very good, large covered outdoor area as well as seating inside. Ok to just get coffee. Plenty of on street parking nearby.
S. P.
Consistently delicious food and a fantastic wait staff. Been coming here for years and have never been disappointed!
l. m.
From the moment we walked in we were greeted with the warmest happiest welcome then the customer service improved from there. Customer service 10/10... atmosphere 10/10.... food 17/10... what a find. Highly recommended.
F. M.
5 stars for the amazing omelette. Suprising interesting flavors cooked to perfection. Long black was good, soy latte was excellent.
t.
Friendly service, generous portions and perfectly cooked breakfast.
N. B.
Today I had your ham & cheese crossont and it has bothered me all day that I never came in and told you how good it was, it seriously was the tastiest crossont I have ever had and I really loved the fact you don't press it and squash it while toasting...everyone please try this crossont
J. C.
The menu here is terrific! And the staff are super friendly. It can get pretty busy here on weekends though, so be prepared for a bit of a www ait occasionally.
S. P.
Love it here. The food is always amazing! Their croquettes are so tasty and their scrambled eggs fluffy perfection.
M. H.
Awesome ☕ roasted in house. Generous servings and recently updated outdoor easting space is super cosy in a Melbourne winter. Chill scrambled is a highlight!
p. g.
Owner not very friendly. Felt like we were intruding. Rest of the staff are excellent. Quick service
F. D. I.
Long before Tinder or the Internet the local milkbar was the hub for romance to blossom. This café which as the name suggests used to be a local milkbar and is the perfect venue to capture some of that innocence and simplicity often lost in the modern approach to falling in love. Located just far enough from High Street to feel like you’ve stumbled on a local secret, this Dundas street café certainly is intriguing. The old milkbar delivers something truly classy in very relaxed packaging, which is probably what most people on a date are trying to project to their partner anyway. A really interesting and creative menu is offered, however our reviewers both could not pass the first item on the menu, bacon and egg sliders with spicy relish. Fresh ingredients, cooked to perfect fluffy egg/crispy bacon goodness, made for an unpretentious treat. The coffee was of a similar memorable quality. Here they use Dark Horse blend, from Five Senses coffee. As far as we know this name has nothing to do with the Katy Perry song, but in fact blends coffees from 3 different countries to deliver a stunning finished product. So leave all your newfangled gadgets at home and we’ll just meet you at the milkbar.
M. “. A.
Lovely atmosphere. Great service. Great food.
N. H.
Excellent food and excellent staff. It's my go to cafe to catch up with family and friends.
V. C.
Love TOMB. Can't go past the poached eggs! Agree with some previous comments re coffee - when it's good it's amazing...When it's bad it's watery and weak. Differs between baristas. Service is tops!
j.
Love to come here when I visit my old neighborhood. Food is well presented and pretty darn good. Service is not to sneer at!
S. S.
Good little cafe. Friendly service, good food and accommodating towards dogs in their outdoor area. Quiet location so finding a park is nice and easy.
I. H.
Needed an early morning breakfast , excellent service & food / coffee was delicious and fast. The relaxed atmosphere & ambience makes this a cafe I would highly reccommend to others :)
D.
Friendly staff, cool vibes and nice atmosphere in a nice rustic location. Pity the coffee was no good, weak beans and made wrong.
S. M.
Lovely varied menu with a good mix of savoury and sweet to satisfy both genders. The odd casual staff member can be a little clueless but that's unavoidable.
F. F.
Delicious good, fantastic consistent service with a great friendly atmosphere, my girlfriend absolutely loves this place too.
A. K.
Lovely setting, good food and a hard working crew
f.
Just enjoyed one of the best breakfasts I've had for ages. Sitting in the sun with yummy food, how good is Melbourne! Thanks TOMB.
T. E.
Great cafe! Good food portion sizes, value for money and friendly staff. I highly recommend this place :)
R. P.
Amazing food and all staff were lovely up until the end when the manager (I'm assuming - older man) would not allow split bills and was quite rude about it.
M. T.
Love this place. Great coffee and their coffee beans roasted on premises are some of the best in Victoria. Food great too
L. d. B.
Great coffee, great food, staff are lovely and remember my regular order which is always a nice touch
C. H.
Great for breakfast, lunch or a quick coffee. Friendly staff and reasonable prices. A favourite with the locals.

Ok food. Service was a bit vacent.
They didn't have much interest in us or our order.
A little bit generic.
Nothing special.

Great place for a casual weekend brunch

Everything is great about this place aside from the food. Location, staff, prices are all great but the food is super average.
