Really Authentic Italian food, I had Chicken liver with polenta and it was delicious, perfectly cooked and served with a smile. Most of the restaurants in Lygon St serve Australian Italian food, which is fine if that's what you want. This has a much more interesting menu and it's good value.

I really love this place and really missed it during the various lockdowns we had in Melbourne. Service tonight was fast and responsive even though the place was obviously booked out! The food is an excellent experience in culinary delights! A well-worn cliche, but nevertheless very true. You always get a warm welcome and a friendly acknowledgement when leaving. Met with a friend for dinner. Booking was easy via email, which the website suggested was their preferred method. Ambiance was pleasantly subdued and it wasn't particularly noisy even though it was busy. The service was very attentive and the gnocchi I had was filling. Overall a pleasant experience and I will be back.

Passed the eggs benedict test with flying colours - best I've had in ages: rich and lemony hollandaise, two perfectly poached and yolky eggs, and a generous serving of ham. Top-notch coffee as well. Based on this, I reckon everything else must be great as well.

Great service and great food! Was absolutely horrified when my family made a fuss here one hot afternoon. The staff maintained professionalism and the 2 waiters that attended to us really did their best to handle unreasonable people during a busy period. Customer was good. The ambiance of the cafe was nice. However, the serving size was small, considering the past reviews, I was expecting more. I had the corn fritters breakfast with an extra of eggs. The fritters were tasty, but felt like it was premade and fried up again to order. The spinach was just plain salad spinach placed on the side. The tomato chutney sauce was tasty too, but felt like it came from a bottle. The ingredients on the plate just felt like they were disjointed and not a cohesive whole.

Not to be confused with universal cafe with its famed chicken schnitzel (also amazing) university cafe serves up authentic Italian dishes with big flavour and full plates. It is a must try. The calamari rings are among the best I've ever had and the seafood marinara is in the top 10 for me.

I had a solo early dinner here tonight at just on 6.15pm. Spaghetti marinara, and a glass of delicious red wine. The pasta was yummy, with just enough tooth, and a good and reasonably generous sauce. The reason I am giving this restaurent three stars rather than four, is that I felt incredibly rushed by the staff. I had three different staff ask me about wine (I ordered a single glass which turned out to be delicious, and some sparkling water which turned out to be invisible) and then the same three came back and asked about food. And then one or another kept coming back to ask about more wine. Or dessert or coffee. And when I indicated I'd like a few more minutes between finishing a generous plate of pasta and thinking about dessert they just kept coming back every couple of minutes. Then just when I had made up my mind to order dessert, I was presented with the bill and asked to go into the next room to pay it. I put the dollars on the tray and continued to sip my wine, with the cash visible on the table. Then it was taken away and returned with my change. Overall I felt loomed over, and actually quite unwelcome, I felt as if I was being rushed the entire time. So even though the pasta was good, this restaurent was not.

Classical Italian restaurant done well. Plenty of authentic pasta and pizza options (including some gluten free pasta) most around the $20 mark. Portion sizes are suitable, not too little or too much. I had the lasanga, which was a good standard lasanga. Staff were friendly and professional. Nothing exceptional - a solid lunch or dinner choice that doesn't blow the bank.

Pasta was best ever I had in Australia. I forgot the name but seafood with tomato base sauce . It was very nice. Pizza is also good. One thing unfortunately one most handsome guy wasn't friendly. He was able to apologise if they don't have pineapple juice (was on menu). He just said " No we don't have it !" The attitude wasn't very professional. I hope not he did it to me because of my race or age (I'm young Asian male ) other staff was very friendly and nice. Blonde girl was smiley , guy with glasses was helpful and nice. Middle age guy was very friendly too! And pear juice which I order instead of pineapple juice was incredibly beautiful !! I want to go again one day. Three point was just from my experience. But I can say highly recommend!

Ordinary run of the mill Italian just like most of the others along this strip of Italian restaurants. The upstairs dining room was too small for the number of people packed into the space. Even the staff had trouble trying to manoeuvre between the tables. The room was also blistering hot when it definitely didn’t need to be as warm as it was. The food was okay but nothing to write home over and typically overpriced.

The food tasted good and was served in a liberal quantity. The wine I ordered was Bertani Pinot Grigio. The staff was friendly without being overly so, which was nice! Staff was helpful in giving suggestions regarding the food and wine pairing. Happy to go back again!

Food arrived quickly and could not fault any aspect - pizza had delicious thin crust with a sensible amount of topping (mozzarella, eggplant, basil, etc) and great tomato base. Ditto the salad, generous and well seasoned (wrong word, i know). Meal was approx $40. Highly recommended.

Thank you to all the Staff at the University Cafe, especially to the young man that served my family tonight. I would like to apologise for the awful, inexcusable, aggressive behaviour in which my Mother spoke to our waiter. It was appalling, and in no need nessesary. I have never been so embarrassed and ashamed in my life. We understand that our entree wasn't ordered, simply from misunderstanding, but in no way were my husband and sister offended or upset. These things can happen. Unfortunately my Mother thought it warranted her to speak down to the poor young man. Which I did try and stop as best I could. I am truly and deeply sorry he had to be spoken to this way, and hope he is ok. I used to work in hospitality, and I understand how horrible it is when spoken to this way. And to anyone else reading this, think before you speak. Bullying is NOT ok! Treat others the way you want to be treated!
