Comments of Vertue Coffee Roasters

Great coffee! The indoor area can get a bit loud. Outdoor seating looked nicer, would recommend booking that on a nice day :)
Food was really good, it took a while to come but was worth the wait! We got the Harissa Scramble and Tofu Scramble. Highly recommend both.
Location can be a bit weird, it feels like you’re walking down a weird unassuming alley. It’s right behind the petrol pump, just follow the coffee signs.

Second time coming here! We (4 of us) ordered one meal and one drink for each person. The food was great and aligned with our expectations, we were amazed by the presentation of each dish, looked like paintings!
Though it was lunch time, it wasn’t too busy. But because they were understaffed, we had to wait a bit to get our orders in. Staff there were very friendly, we definitely had a great time!
E. H.
Great spot for brunch, great coffee and matcha too!
M. B.
Couldn’t grab a seat for a Sunday lunch so at least a coffee to go.
Got their Charlie chai latte and an oat flat white. Loved how rich and bold both tasted in their own flavour. The chai had a unique kick from the spice but needed a bit more creaminess, whilst I think Bonsoy would have tasted better for the flat white although oat milk gives it a nice natural sweetness.
Can’t wait to come back and try their enticing food menu options
Coffee: 4
Value: 4.5

Such a nice little find; you feel like a little win when you discover it.
Once inside, you’re in awe of the high ceiling wonderful space.
Coffee here is great, we love it.
There are some real gems in the menu but some can be a bit of a let down. Guess you’ll just have to go through the whole menu to find them hehe.
We will always be returning!
A. M.
Love the high ceilinged interior and the excellent coffees. I chose a sweet dish with the espresso brioche French toast and as can be seen from the picture it was a flavour journey. My partner had the harissa eggs which is a usual favourite. Always a good place for brunch!
Update 27-Nov-21 - we came back and we were not disappointed! The chicken burger comes with curly fries(unfortunately I had only two in my little basket that truly qualified as full fries, the rest were bits) but the slaw in the burger was brilliant! The Harissa eggs remain a tried and true favourite.

Great coffee and food. This is a slightly tricky place to find, sort of hidden behind the petrol station, but it is well worth the effort. Food was delicious, big generous portions and lots of complimentary flavours. Highly recommend for breakfast or a hearty brunch.
M.
Friendly staff and quick service for takeaway coffee. Not my favourite tasting notes (ordered a soy), but my partner loved his strong latte. Will be back to try it again as I know it's a local favourite.

Hidden in an alley, Vertue Coffee Roaster is Chic, and has so much character. It's quite easy to miss the cafe but the aroma of the coffee is hard to miss and your love for coffee will lead you appropriately.
What we totally loved was the Coffee and.Hot Chocolate. Absolutely stunning!! Btw, they have a huge coffee list and a coffee for every kind of coffee lover.
What we couldn't appreciate was the food. Looked glamorous and fresh but lacked flavors. Portions were small and looked expensive for the overall experience.
Service is friendly and super options for Vegans. Definitely returning for.a nice coffee.

Great place for high quality coffee and food. The design of the cafe is very unique with a juxtaposition of different styles in each room whilst maintaining a contemporary clean look. The coffee is great and the food looks amazing and tastes awesome. It's slightly more pricey than some other cafes but you won't notice due to the quality.

What an exceptional experience I had at this place. I really don’t know where to start from. The place is really well designed and amazing. The space inside is amazing and the outdoor seating is really nice.
Coffee here is top and you really enjoy having your coffee. The menu is really interesting and the variety of food and flavour is amazing. I don’t think anything could go wrong here. Well done guys and keep up the good work.

Although a little hard to find, this place is worth it. I really enjoyed a lot about Vertue Coffee Roasters, we had to wait a little while for a table at 1pm on a Sunday but were able to sit and order a coffee while we waited. They had run out of the French toast which was what I really wanted but I went for the waffles instead which turned out great. My partner had the Return of the Mac. Both were really delicious! Highly recommend this place.
C. L.
Had the tiramisu waffle and big boss. Amazing and great service.

Welcome back to brunch! After lockdown I spent my first brunch at Vertue and after wanting to try them for the longest time; they did NOT disappoint
FOOD: We ordered salmon rostis and the tiramisu waffles! The salmon rosti was PHENOMENAL! I loved every part of it! The rostis were not too oily but still seasoned perfectly which meant when paired with the avocado and salmon, it was an amazing experience but honestly, the winning part of the dish was the chutney! The tomato chutney completed the entire dish with almost everything being salty and then the added sourness/tartness of the chutney made it a flavour experience I was super impressed with! The tiramisu waffles was not too bad with the unique gelato (I think) but their savoury dish definitely won it for me!
COFFEE: Warm and wonderful! It was a good cuppa with really good tones but my friend did say the iced coffee was abit too diluted
SERVICE & PROTOCOL: The service was friendly and pleasant! They were strict with protocol and I really appreciated how secure and hygienic they kept the cafe! They also followed all procedures, wore masks and were extremely professional! I also really appreciated how they allowed bookings!
Overall, Vertue Coffee Roasters lives up to its name of being an amazing brunch place! The ambience was phenomenal, food was delicious and overall my experience was wonderful!
서.
First visit: I found a cold brew that was just perfect for my taste.
Second visit: I was so disappointed to see the frothy filter coffee.
I am sure the barista knows why bubbles on it. I'm afraid to visit again.
A. S.
What a great, great venue tucked away down a dodgy little alley. The space is awesome with indoor and outdoor seating options. Really friendly staff who know their coffee and stuff. The coffee is top notch and they have a great menu for dining in and ready made takeaway options too. Definitely worth a visit and I'll be back to try more
K. M.
Such hidden cafe in busy Carlton area. Great food, spacious, good coffee and excellent service. Can’t fault anything there, definitely 5-star !
S. B.
Very cool, hidden away coffee shop that is quite a gem. The coffee is delicious - the best of Melbourne coffee, really. The food is quite special as well. The matcha waffles are awesome. Great breakfast/brunch spot for couples and small groups.
J. L.
A tucked away cafe that Google maps has not quite got right in terms of directions. Coffee roaster on sight, this cafe serves great coffee and amazing food! A place where I'd like to try absolutely everything on the menu! Definitely will be back!
a. k.
Amazing food and great service. I had the Match Waffle with Black Sesame Icecream which was absolutely stunning. My partner had the Truffled mushrooms which was also delicious. Coffee is nice but served a little closer to lukewarm than warm. Beautiful setting in a tucked away place.
B. E.
As my trip moves to Melbourne this is the first place I decided to check out for brunch and so glad I did. It’s hidden down an alley behind a petrol station just off Lygon street but is a very cool place. Open kitchen, friendly staff, great coffee and juice and some really interesting brunch options!
The photo is homemade mac n cheese croquettes, beetroot purée, ham hock, poached egg and beetroot Hollandaise, delicious!
C. A.
Best dish here is prawn toast! I get this every time and come to Vertue just for this dish -it never disappoints!! Also their range of coffee beans is one of the best. We love the dark roast with cherry notes. Excellent service, three thumbs up!!!
M. M.
It's really hidden place. I can't expect inside of cafe that has a bit spacious room and a great roaster as well.
Tried a Barista Breakfast that served 3 different coffees such as Espresso, Cold Brew and Batch Brew.
Originally it's 3/4 Flat White instead of Cold Brew.
Amazing coffee and the decor is so cool!!
T. H. N.
So AMAZING ♥️
Hidden venue with chilled elegant ambiance (lovely playlist, refreshing decor with open roof). I wish i could spend all day there for savoury breakfast, chilled with a cocktail, experience their specialty coffee, treat myself with some sweeties and leave with an iced coffee.
Not so sure how to enjoy this dish, how to combine these elements. Love the salad, coconut, green apple and lemon leaf come so well together. Have to save this salad idea. Tamarind prawn on toast is great as well, sour and savoury on crunchy sesame toast. Try to get some coriander and betel leaf with every bites to add spices, and fried shallot and grounded peanut if possible. Fried egg seems not belong to this dish (replacing with more prawn would be awesome).
Friendly and helpful staff.
Reasonable price and so generous portion that i have to take a while to rest.
Highly recommended and definitely come back.
t. b.
Yummmmmyyyyy coffee brunch sweets.... mac cheese croquets, Tim tam brownie, divine coffee.... this is one of my fav fav favourite places to brunch.
M. T.
Excellent coffee, friendly staff. Only problem: limited pastry options.
A. L.
Was invited here by a friend and everything we tried was exceptional. The umami mushrooms was exactly how it's named, full of savoury goodness 🤤. The harrisa scramble with added fried chicken was recommended by the waitress and it and it was delish although it wasn't hot at all. I loved the addition of Vietnamese mint to add some freshness to the dish. Finally the chai panna cotta. The chai flavour was bold and the panna had a perfect smooth consistency. I find sometimes a panna cotta dish with granola can be a tad dry but the apple compote and stewed rhubarb was the perfect addition to counter that.
Overall I had an amazing brekkie here and would recommend.
Z. L.
Great place for brunch. Dishes were colorful and decorated well. The food was unique and very tasty. A bit pricey for the portions you get, but other than that, no complaints. Decor is stylish and tasteful.

Best beans in Melbourne. Loved them! Stopped in a couple times to pick up beans at the house. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable!

Really great coffee here. The daily batch is always great. The food is a mix of vegan friendly and Cafe style foods. Can get busy on weekends. Come on a Tuesday when they are roasting and the place smells amazing.
F. G.
Very innovative brunch place. Always love the idea of creating a cafe with an eclectic menu that diffuses cuisines from various inspiration. Tried the prawn toast. Really liked it, fresh, unique flavor, tasty. The toast resembles snacks from Chinese cuisine. The addition of betel leaf, green apple, peanuts and coconut highlights Vietnamese influence on the dish. Coffee marinates salmon as an extra was delish. Overall, a fascinating place for brunch.. with kids as well.
A.
Went here a couple of weeks back and absolutely loved this place. Very friendly staff, and the food was delicious. Of course you have to get their coffee which again was great! Definitely recommend visiting or ordering takeaway!

The latte’s very good, went 2 days in a row. Taste slightly different but just as great. The beef short rib was excellent (2 to share is just nice)
r. a.
The best coffee I have ever tried especially for a decaf which usually doesn't have a lot of interest. Please don't try Salted caramel cookies because you will be stuck on it. The general atmosphere is amazing 👌🏽
قهوته لذذذذذيذه جداً, والمكان رائع ورايق

Worth coming to Lygos Street for this alleyway roastery and cafe experience. Bright interior with roaster on display in the middle makes for a great focal point. Well made espressos and enthusiastic team running the show. Come here early on a weekday to make the most of the experience, weekends can get busy!
P. P.
An amazing coffee shop hidden behind a gas station and a garage. It totally feels like it is a secret place. With friendly and considerate staff, relaxing atmosphere and delicious food. I went several times and always had a wonderful time.
A. S.
Coffee at the corner with great options. Loved their decor. Must visit place for a cafe explorer
L. T.
Cafe in an alleyway with a cool vibe. Food was a little heavy for my liking but coffee absolutely on point. Our table waitress wasn't in the best mood that day but the other staff were very friendly.
K. B.
Best beans in Melbourne. Loved them! Stopped in a couple times to pick up beans at the house. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable!

Awesome cafe. If you're coffee lover, this is one of the cafe you must visit.
Cozy environment, super friendly staff, good food and awesome coffee.
The staff friendly welcome, and introduced really good coffee to me patiently.
C. S.
Amazing coffee tucked in a little gem of a venue. You know you're on an adventure when the directions include "turn left at the dumpsters"!
Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the coffee has no peer.
Get the fancy coffee of the day, treat yourself.
V. T.
Food was good but service was so so. Pricing is normal for a brunch place. However hard to find, even with google map. Behind a petrol station in a small lane
E. C.
Good service sans nice coffee flavour but my soy cap was a bit lumpy. The atmosphere is good, tucked away in a tiny laneway next to the petrol station. Lots of natural light inside, one of my go-to cafes in the area.
K. D.
Great space and a really good menu with lots of interesting brunch fare. Love the variety of sweet stuff! Goes without saying the coffee is on point and we were able to get a seat easily enough on a Saturday. Good stuff!
C. C.
Great service. Helpful staff -if you have any inquiries on the menu. Food is also delicious. We go here quite often since the experience has always been positive.
The return of the Mac is amazing if you like more of a savoury breakfast
Today, I tried the beef ribs which were melt in my mouth delicious! Definitely not a traditional breakfast meal but I didn’t regret it one bit.
Tip: on busy days (weekends) make sure your whole party is present otherwise you won’t be seated.
M. X.
Good brunch place, 10% surcharge on weekends, plenty of street parking on surrounding road, located next to a petrol station, limited dog friendly seats. Very attentive service.
P. F.
Tucked away in a back laneway, this cosy little cafe was discovered, service was a bit slow, we had to wait for 5 before we were acknowledged, coffee was good, food was delicious
H. B.
Cool little place in Carlton hidden away next to the Motor Repair Shop and Shell Station. Timber and Concrete with High Ceilings and contemporary interior feels. Quality coffee and great tasting food options make this a must try. Word of warning though, service can be a bit hit an miss but... doesn't detract from a great place to eat or drink!
J. K.
On a cold rainy summer Melbourne morning I was looking for an oasis to relax by myself, have a good coffee, and a dessert that could be mistaken for breakfast. Vertue didn't disappoint with friendly staff, excellent coffee and this caramel french toast. Win!
D. C.
Food and service were really great. Excellent présentation of all dishes... loved the coffee.
Definitely worth a try...
G. B.
Best breakfast I had in a while! Lovely place & atmosphere, yummy food & good coffee!
A. C.
Great food options.
Very busy place, prepare for some wait time.
C. Y.
Friendly staff, really tasty food. Cozy environment. The French Kiss was amazing! Loved the ice cream that came with it. Sourdough bread with eggs and salmon was also great! (Try ordering the magic coffee)
M. Y.
Food was food and staffs were friendly. However my friends and I went there to celebrate birthday and brought 2 cakes. Was expecting the staff to bring in the cake with candles lit, but the staff just brought in the cake in the box.
They expected us to put the candles ourselves but also didn't provide us with lighter, had to ask from another staff to get it for us which really ruined the birthday surprise.
C. N.
My favourite cafe in all of Australia! Amazing food and coffee
J. S.
Wow reading some of the 1 star reviews have these people been living in a cave for the last year oblivious to what has been going on. No need to harrass a cafe for trying to do what's right. Vertue is a great hidden place just off lygon with amazing coffee and food.
N. R.
What a delicious experience in every way! I couldn’t believe how kind and cool everyone was that served me, especially as the place was crazy busy. I sat outside in their cute courtyard and multiple people working stopped by for a chat and to make sure all was well. PLUS THE STRONG LATTE HAD ME RUNNING AROUND THE CITY LIKE MY PANTS WERE ON FIRE I’VE NEVER BEEN SO PRODUCTIVE!!! Check. Them. Out.
R. S.
Loved it the waiters were fabulous the food and presentation sensational!
only suggestion a partition to hide the large blue garbage skips
S. D.
Absolutely need to visit here and have a coffee. Fantastic coffee and service along with a great atmosphere.
N. M.
Worth the search! As you would expect from their name, they know how to do a good coffee. But the food is just as delicious. And it's one of those spaces that is just beautiful to be in. Staff are warm, inviting and accommodating too. Definitely worth the search.
M. F. A.
Absolutely loved the place, amazing chicken burger and pancake. 😋
e. p.
Really good coffee, friendly staff!
The chicken burger is amazing, perfect flavours and large serving. Highly recommend booking on weekends if you can.
J. L.
Vertue make a sensational coffee and breakfast. You will find them down a lane way behind the petrol station. ¡Buen provecho!
M. W.
Lovely interiors with nice see through roofs and great natural lighting, but let down by average food and inconsistent service of team members – some were really nice, while others were less than friendly. Coffee was good. Overall, a good experience, but I wouldn't go back anytime soon.
R. L. T.
One of my favourite brunch spots in Melbourne- easily!
N. B.
Delicious Umami mushrooms and corn bread and great tasting Mac n cheese croquettes and ham hock.
Lovely place to eat and enjoy the casual atmosphere.
S. L.
Hidden gem! 💎 Yummy coffee, yummy dishes, great friendly staffs.
c. t.
Grateful coffee. Really good brekkie. A little hard to find. Turn left at the coffee didn't and follow your nose
K.
Great coffees. Delicious food. Large portions
M. D.
Very good out of the way hard to find place! Food was great tables a little small and staff very good!
A. G.
Innovate menu and aesthetic presentation. This place was awesome and you can tell the chefs take pride in everything that comes out of the kitchen. I had the chai panacotta and it was amazing!! The only thing I would say is that although the cafe was quiet, I felt the host was passive aggressive and impatient towards a mother with a pram. She was not taking up much room and it was uncomfortable seeing someone act hostile towards a mum trying to get a coffee. Other than that everything was great :)
B. W.
Incredible, unique breakfast dishes and the best coffee in Melbourne, hands-down. An absolute must-try.
S. K.
Yep! As the name says, their coffee is amazing. Great vibe and must try their desserts too!
P. N.
Branding has been done by someone's nephew—looks like some cheap chain—but it's actually really great. Coffee, vibe, decor and staff are lovely and all that would amount to 5 stars. But food is obnoxiously priced; a plate of smashed peas is one of the lesser priced items, but comes in at smashed avocado prices?? Burgers inch towards $30 if you add bacon. Jeez Louise.
M. E.
Worth to go find it, trendy space and coffee really good. Wouldn't call it my best (Newcastle Momo rules!) but the whole experience was very pleasant
K. F.
Definitely best coffee in Victoria! Can't drink coffee at other cafes any more. Atmosphere is awesome! So cool!
P. M.
Great service and food! 😀 I ordered too much food but it was quality. And I experienced my first 'Barista's Breakfast'. Highly recommend! 👌👌
J. G.
Absolutely worth the high ratings. Food is exceptional and beautiful presented. And filling! Love the out-of-the-way / non-descript entry too :)
A. A.
Cozy and nice atmosphere. They do a good coffee. The staff was friendly and the chicken burger was amazing.
L.
Absolutely adore this place, nothing scream Melbourne more like a hidden alleyway cafe that opens up to spacious and light-filled cafe with good coffee and food as The Vertue of the Coffee Drink does.
G. E.
Love the coffe (Dark Side is my favourite for brewing at home) and the food (great flavours, beautiful presentation and a bit of a twist). Super friendly staff, too!
H. T.
One of the best pork belly I have ever had. Wonderful waiter. Amazing
G.
The hipsters working in here are efficient and polite. The interior is artfully decorated in a soft industrial feel, warm timber and machinery ... sounds weird, but it's great, especially with the high ceilings. Seating is generous. Food is quite simply amazing. Salmon rosti was delicious. Coffee is spot on. Missus had a coconut hot chocolate drink, can't remember name, it was rich and awesome. Finding this place is the hard part. Highly recommend.
S. N.
Im visiting Melbourne, I chose this coffee shop because it had a good vibe. I was served by the girl with purple hair. She was a real delight to speak to and had a bubbly, bright smile on her face always. Definitely will be recommending this cafe to friends and family when they visit. Thanks for the great coffee and food and to the staff members who made my visit a good one.
A. D.
This was my third time here and first time to actually review this place.
The owner is always there busting around making sure people are being served but if you need to ask him a question about coffee be prepared to get the full spiel about it.
The rest of the staff are friendly the waiter that we had was memorable. Walking around in a red lifeguard jumper and provided so much banter throughout the entire meal and service. It makes it almost like brunch and a show.
I had the waffles, which comes with magic popping dirt ;) , and a side of fried chicken which did not disappoint. My parents got the big breakfast with curly fries which they were also really happy with.
While there I had a long black and got to try a sample of the Mexico batch brew which was fantastic.
It is a little hard to find this place but once you know where it is you'll definitely be coming back here.
On my way out I purchased 3kg of beans to have throughout the week. These beans are reasonably priced which is my favourite part (other than how they taste).
Got informed that their site will be up soon so I can order from interstate! I am very excited for this to happen!
Cudos to the owner and all his staff for an awesome experience and welcoming vibe. Will see you next time I'm in Melbourne.
I.
Excellent food, friendly staff. Love the fact that it's quite hidden too!
M. M.
Beautiful place with wonderfully helpful and friendly staff. Second visit was just as good (or better!) as the first. Chat with the staff as they whip up an excellent coffee and give you samples to try. They can give lots of information on coffee and local sights and things to do.
Great coffee both brewed and espresso, lots of options of beans freshly roasted, with the roaster front and center when you enter. Can't go wrong here! Will be going back asap.
V. M.
Through a service station and down an alley way you’ll find some of the best coffee and brunch food in Carlton (and that’s a big statement as Carlton is one of the top foodie destinations in Melbourne).
Everything here is amazing, the coffee is so good, the chai latte is one of the best in Melbourne, the avocado toast omg. Salads, burgers, chips. I love this place. Plus the staff are lovely and who can forget the venue itself. Huge skylight and towering ceiling. Plus if it’s a nice day sit yourself under an umbrella and enjoy this hidden gem of a cafe. And if you’re lucky enough to go when they’re roasting coffee beans it smells divine.
For gluten and lactose intolerant people like me you’re not missing out at all. Heaps of options and the gluten free sourdough toast is amazing. Take your friends for a wow moment!
A. C. (.
Amazing cafe, they've nailed everything. From the space, ambience, coffee, food to service. I loved the visit and will keep coming back. The table next to me broke a glass that shattered everywhere, and the waitress promptly took away my food and replaced it in seconds, unsolicited. They're so attentive and really care.
I enjoyed it immensely.
E. T. C.
The cafe to end all cafes. Take a bow, Vertue.
Their Tofu scramble is one of the best tofu thing I’ve ever eaten, and I grew up eating tofu!
J. S.
WOW! We had a great experience at Vertue Coffee.
Loved the décor and layout, so bright and light and beautiful.
The coffee is amazing too. I tried a Cold Brew - top notch.
My lunch dish was divine!! I tried the Super Greens with added tofu. There was coconut tzatziki and pumpkin hummus with loads of greens. The flavours were great and it was so filling!
You gotta visit this place if you're in Carlton!
D. L.
Great service, amazing menu, delicious coffee, and a Melbourne industrial vibe atmosphere.
N. A.
Great hidden cafe. Amazing coffee (cold drip, single origin, filter) and tasty food!
T. T.
Nice to place to catch up with friends.
The food was just average.
P. D.
Tucked away this place is for coffee fans. Constant variety and always a great experience. The food, however, is spectacular. The kitchen staff keeps knocking out great dish after great dish. Baked goods are a great temptation. Take the 1 or 6 tram. They sell bulk coffee as well.
M. M.
This place became one of my favourite brunch places in Melbourne within seconds! the food was really nice, the coffee was good, the service was amazing and the ambience was superb. The combination was really nice and I will definitely go back.
F. H.
Great coffee, good atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff. The coffee here is excellent and the place has a great flair to it with it's secret location. The food was okay, but is trying too hard to be different without nailing the basics. I had the green eggs and ham and while various parts of the dish were quite tasty, it didn't feel like a cohesive dish.
It made me wish for a simpler dish done really well.
A. A.
This place managed to destroy my good mood twice in one day.. coffee wasn’t bad yet everything else was less than a star
Edit:
I am allergic to waiters that can’t smile. Came in with two kids as Mum had the third at the RCH for a cast. I needed to feed them and wait for the Mum to join us for a brunch. Waiter told us that we can’t sit in unless we ready to order breakfast. I smiled and waited for a coffee and a croissant while he served others who came after me! I asked then when my order was going to be taken as he went back to his floor duties, he turned and said “WAIT”. Waited made the order, took it and left.
A while later Mum came to check the venue to which he assumed she is with other customers who were sitting down as he thought they looked similar!! we waited in line to get in. He asked to take temp again and for us to register. Then he let others who came after us take seats and told us to wait for a seat upstairs! There was a big table that was available at the time down stairs. We waited for a while then been told to go up. Up with 3 little kids and a pram!
We still went up only to realise we had to use a high table unsuitable for kids to eat even with high chairs that wasn’t even there.
The waiter comes up again to ask for temp. At that point we both felt that he just wanted to let us know we weren’t welcomed so we decided to leave hungry.
To the defence of the waiter, the place need extra hands to help.
Here where we think you could improve.
Smile
Respect the queue!
Respect kids and don’t think that everyone who wears a “yellow top” should sit together!

Thank you Mike, the propose of the review is not to hurts your business rather point out an honest feel that could help you as a business stay on top. You care to reply matters.
Thank you.

Not only good food and coffee but really great staff.
Y. Z. L.
Absolutely love this place! Quality of the food is top-notched. Excellent service and willing to go the extra mile to accommodate dietary requirements. Cannot praise this place and the staff enough!
R. B.
Good food, friendly staff, nice ambience

I visited Vertue Coffee Roasters for the first time on Sunday and it was fantastic. A broad, inclusive menu with a balance of sweet and savoury brunch options, catering to vegetarians and vegans as well. I had the smashed peas on toast with hummus and dukkah; a very generous serving! Great coffee, great vibes and excellent customer service. I would highly recommend.

Excellent customer service, diverse menu with plenty of options for vegetarian and omnivore alike.
Marvelous coffee again with plenty of offerings suited to all levels of coffee drinker.
The place and its staff are well presented.
Vertue may well be Carlton's best kept culinary secret!

Really cool converted stable cafe that you probably won't even find unless you are looking for it. They like to seat groups together so bear that in mind if meeting someone there. They have a nice range of food options although if you have a big appetite you'll need to me careful what youpick because some if the portions are on the small side. My friend and I enjoyed our meals and it seemed the surrounding table were also content. The tables are pretty packed in but they can get away with it because of the lovely high ceiling that allows natural light to come through. They are very into their coffee as the name would suggest and serve a good cup. They actually an offer a rather wide selection of drinks including a variety of coffee options, juices and teas. There was a cabinet of sweet treats to go and it had a few choices to suit various dietary requirements. Overall it was an enjoyable experience in a well designed cafe with friendly staff.

Vertue never lets me down! Probably the best coffee I’ve ever had in Melbourne, a stand out brunch menu (vegetarian friendly...win!), lovely and helpful staff with such quick service - it’s no wonder they’re always so busy!
Whenever I have friends, family or colleagues to entertain, I bring them here and they’re always blown away. Can’t wait for my next excuse to visit!
(Would definitely recommend the green salad bowl or the mashed peas - both delicious and filling meals.)
T. T.
Wish I could give them a 6/5. Quirky location, delicious food. Highly recommend. Ordered the big boss, best breakfast of our Melbourne trip!
R. N.
Great food and amazing coffee. Perfect Melbourne coffee shop
R. Q.
A hidden gem, down a lane behind a service station, os it's location. My daughter, and i ordered coffee and toasted sandwiches from a frantically busy young man, who was providing excellent customer service. Oh, the coffee and sandwiches., were top notch.
R. T.
Okay, but like if you want an amazing meal and great coffee or unique alcohols this is the place. The staff are SO friendly, very knowledgable and just down right personable. Every time i've been the meal has been decent sized, beautifully plated and delicious. Also just love that it's behind a servo, very Aussie.

A hidden heaven on earth for coffee enthusiats. Wide selection of fresh, in-house roasted coffee with a variety of blends and locations from which the coffee is sourced, all updated every week or so.
The team carefully choose which beans to serve with both black & milk based coffee respectively, ensuring the flavours really shine no matter how you enjoy your cup.
They also offer some great alternative brewing styles if you'd like something different to your standard espresso pour, such as a batch brew and cold drip just to name some examples.
Well worth checking out, the food is just as great and the architecture of the building makes dining an awesome experience.
A. N. G.
Absolutely outstanding. Everything from the exquisite food to the friendly service makes this a top brunch choice in all of Melbourne. Despite being very busy all our food came promptly and with a smile.
Excellent options for all dietary requirements. The decaf coffee is delicious.
P. A.
A great place for breakfast and brunch very stylish and trendy setting.
Presentation and flavour was fantastic.
Coffee selection, flavour and latte art was very pleasant.
Staff and service are kind, enthusiastic and courteous.
Overall a great experience that I would recommend to friends and family.

Very good place for brunch and coffee.

One of the best hidden secrets of Melbourne. Recommended by a friend, initially pleasantly shocked by the modern decor, next to a dilapidated house and petrol station, it is paved way to an incredible floor plan and interior design. Excellent staff. Excellent coffee. Excellent open layout bathed by the sun. The terrine was one the best dishes I have eaten this year, and not even the chef's pick.
D. S.
A long overdue review after having left Melbourne. Started going here after just beginning to drink coffee and the staff were always great at answering my questions and demonstrate brewing methods, even during busy periods. Excellent rotation of interesting and delicious coffees, and a great public cupping session every Wednesday. Looking forward to being able to order coffee online, and a big shout out to Ciaran and Giovanni.
V. T.
I've only had the coffee at this place (so far) and I absolutely loved it. Not to mention the ambiance and interiors are just spectacular for a cafe tucked behind in an alley off the main street. Definitely going back for the breakfast menu soon.
J. T.
Always a good spot to have my filter coffee
G. B.
Follow the map! Amazing place and delicious food

Nice coffee, friendly staff and interesting menu. This cafe is hidden behind a service station and down an alley. Classic Melbourne.
The coffee apparatus on hand shows just how seriously they take their brews. They also have a small roaster in the middle of the room to roast their own coffee for the cafe, wholesale to other cafes and for you to take home. There are lots of different roasts you can buy for home.
You can sit upstairs if you have a large group or there is lots of other seats on the ground level.
P. M.
Great food, great coffee, nice buzzing vibe.
Vertue delivers exactly what you have done to expect from a cafe in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Any time I'm on Lygon st I love to stop in here.
T. D.
Fantastic coffee and amazing offering of creative brunch meals. Can be quite expensive, but worth it for top notch brews and delicious food! Lovely indoor setting and hipster ambience with very friendly service. Small tables, so best for smaller groups.
B.
Love this place! It's like having my own secret stash of baristas in my back pocket! Staff is super friendly, knowledgeable about their roasts and keen to educate their customers on the complexities of coffee. Amazing what they've turned that space into & love it's history. Perfect for the morning regular, a chill afternoon of studying or catch up with mates. Heaps of heart & quality not focused on profits <3 <3 <3
J. S.
Don't judge a book by its cover. This coffee although looks small and may seens not worth your time to go in at the outside, inside it is spacious with very nice decoration. A good place for coffee lovers and Instagram pics. The food were great, me and my friends had the salmon and the chai pannacotta
G. I.
Love the look of the place!!
The food and coffee was quality also!
👌🏼
M. W.
We found this cafe on our first weekend in Melbourne and continue to visit regularly. Their coffee is worth navigating the service station for. I would highly recommend the barista breakfast if you are into coffee - an espresso, latte and batch brew all on at tray. its fascinating to see the different flavours of the coffee in the preparation.
The breakfasts are also incredibly generous so make sure you're hungry and don't have any lunch plans! The sesame toast and the breakfast pasta are my favs!
M. N.
Tucked away on Raffa Place in Carlton is this amazing brunch spot and is known to many for their amazing coffee. Their coffee beans are roasted on site each week, you know they take their coffee seriously.
It was a nice fit out as there were tables outside for sunny days and nice graffiti drawings along the wall as you walk into the roastery area. The cafe was filled with natural light and there were lovely greeneris around the seating area which made it look like a hanging garden.
There was a good selection on the menu and wine and cocktail section for those who would like a boozy brunch. They use Monarch hot chocolate and you know you can't go wrong.
We decided on the Super Greens, Inca Salad, Umami Mushroom and Chai Panna Cotta. The Umami mushroom was definitely the highlight for me as it had a good mix of mushrooms with a truffle foam. The porcini powder gave it the extra flavour and tasted amazing.
The chai panna Cotta was something different and it had just the right balance with crunchy textures and fresh fruits to keep the dish fresh. They have a whole young coconut which was fresh and is perfect after the meal.
The presentation of each dish was spot on and we absolutely loved it. Love how they focus on true customer experience in making sure their customers have an enjoyable
N. C.
I have been here twice and both times the food has floored me. The atmosphere and decor of the place are pretty spectacular too. I love the homey feel of it. Even getting to the place is an experience. They have a large variety of coffee beans to buy take home though I haven't done so, the option is there which is cool.
M. K.
Great food and coffee! We walked in with a group of seven and we're seated in five minutes for lunch. Delicious single-origin filter coffee. Umami mushrooms, smashed peas, and beef short rib were standout dishes.
N. B.
Absolute treasure of a cafe. I came here like the others, second-guessing my way past the petrol station and mechanic, over puddles of oil and sounds of machinery, and down the little alleyway until at last I found the reassuring "yes, we are open" sign. I was immediately recognised as a "for one" and was spared the awkward finding-my-out-of-the-way-corner procedure as they ushered me into a comfy couch table across from the lovely wall of large hanging plants and succulents with views of the shiny coffee roasting.
As a non-coffee drinker I was neither shunned nor coddled, simply offered suggestions but without pressure. I had a latte and a juice and scoped out all the incredible dishes passing by on their way to tables of other happy patrons. I saw things like matcha waffles and prawn toast.
I was lucky enough to be served by either a very comfortable and delightful employee or perhaps one of the owners as he offered me a taste of their filter coffee and his favourite juice to compare with my own choice. All things were beautifully prepared.
The place itself has soft, natural light and a relaxed but somehow professional ambience, and great care from the staff. I am very happy to live so close and I will certainly come back to have a meal and many more drinks. The only reason I can see to rate this place poorly would be to put off swaths of people coming through and spoiling all the magic. But I think whoever is willing or destined to find it in the first place is very worthy of the experience. Thanks Vertue, was a pleasure.
P. T.
Outstanding! Food was fabulous, great, friendly service. Will come back!
N. S.
Really cool and cosy cafe like a hidden gem around the corner from Cinema Nova. Definitely try it out whether for a brunch or just a coffee.
A. Ö.
Everything was perfect! We had barista breakfast and all the coffees were well extracted, balanced and delicious. Fried chicken burger was super soft and yummy.
H. C.
Absolutely love this place. Came at the recommendation of a friend. Glad a did. It's hidden down a little alleyway behind the servo out front. They have amazing coffee on par with all the other cafés in the area.
The staff and friendly and knowledgeable about everything coffee. They've got wholesale beans and equipment to take home too. Will definitely be stopping in again soon.
A. C.
Great staff who go above and beyond. Excellent coffee and treata as well. Got there just before closing and the staff were nothing short of generous and helpful. Had a good chat, and it took us until after close. While they were packing up we finished our coffee and they didnt make us feel rushed at all. Can't wait to return!
S. Y.
I gave 3 stars because their brunch dishes and coffee were delicious, however their chicken burger can be better because it tasted a bit bland, maybe adding some spices will be better. The curly fries are also too oily.
A. M.
Little bit hard to find but definitely worth the effort! What a gem!
J. L.
Virtue is a really nice, bright open space to be inside with fantastic coffee and a great, interesting menu. The entrance is tucked away giving you a feeling of being in a place the locals go but without the pretension many businesses employ to try and achieve the same effect.
The Winter Mushrooms were fantastic, a great balance of flavours and textures (don't often encounter corn bread!) which was visually stimulating in it's presentation.
Will definitely return to try the rest of the menu!
P. O.
Best place in Carlton for coffee, breakfast and lunch. There was a huge line of waiting customer's (approximately 50 people / 15 groups) when we were leaving at 1100am. We arrived at 9.30am on Sunday and that was the last available table. I suggest you reserve a table because this place packs out quite quickly.
A. T.
Have been coming down to Vertue for a while now to get my daily caffeine fix. Not only is the coffee amazing, but the staff are incredibly friendly and the food is pretty delicious too. I came in today to have breakfast with a friend, and we had the french toast. It was pretty amazing! So whether you're coming in just for takeaway coffee or sitting in for some food, I highly recommend you check these guys out.
M. W.
While I appreciate a surcharge is added to food & beverage service on a public holiday, it makes no sense to me at all that retail goods, such as pre-packaged coffee beans, are also hit with a 20% price increase? Huh? The server wasn't able to explain how coffee beans roasted & packaged earlier in the week were more expensive for this one day... #nothowpenaltyrateswork
...
Thanks for the reply. We buy beans from you guys all the time and understand on weekends you add a 10% surcharge on F&B to cover weekend penalty rates. I'm fairly sure we've never been charged a 10% surcharge on beans if we've bought these on a Sunday versus a Monday? Can I confirm that you just add a surcharge on retail on Public Holidays? Appreciate the transparency.
W.
Absolutely the best breakfast I have had had in Melbourne, the presentation was like a work of art and it was delicious. Service was friendly and prompt, decor was great for the laneway feel of the place. Would definitely reccomend.
S. B.
This place is tucked away next to a petrol station and can be hard to find, but is a hidden gem. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was great. They've got some fantastic art, and the service was very attentive.
k. W.
We had the best experience at Bertie of the Coffee ! From the moment we stepped inter door, amazing staff, Simon spoiled us with extra coffee samples and fantastic recommendations , all the other staff were great too, made us feel very welcome, we had amazing food and coffee that has to be the best in Melbourne!!! We will defiantly be back, we have to try so many more things on the menu ! This morning we had the Tamarind prawn toast and Return of the Mac, coffees and a beautiful real chia latte made from scratch all delicious !
B. H.
Highlight of my visit to Melbourne, these guys handled our challenging banter to a tee. A loose "chief" here, a slippery "champ" there, the staff entertained and managed with professional decorum. The food unbeatable, ambience par excellence. Thanks friends. If I could take only 1 cafe home with me, it'd be Vertue hands down
C. B.
Hidden laneway very out of site.
The eggs with Avocado side was delicious, great latte, friendly staff.
J. L.
There is something tasteful about this converted warehouse cafe tucked away in the laneways of Carlton. Greeted in a friendly and professional manner by a face and voice that is familiar (where have we met before?), I was soon perched at the bar contemplating the clever menu that suggests beverages to be paired with the food.
The Tamarind Prawn Toast arrived with the most appetising scent wafting towards my nose. Sesame coated thick toast complemented by prawns, betel leaves, fried crushed peanuts, shredded coconut apple salad and a fried egg. The betel leaves gave this fusion a distinctive flavour that remained delicious throughout each mouthful.
This place features specialty filtered coffee, an extensive range of tea and its own blend of hot chocolate. Every service staff smiled at every contact. The bright and airy warehouse opens out to comfortable courtyard seating. The manager and I talked and we finally connected that I used to be a regular in his previous lobby cafe. The professional service and mood of the place totally fits what I remembered of his last business.
D. W.
Very Melbourne style brunch/cafe. Lovely wait staff and great coffee. I found the servings to be quite filling and the atmosphere is great!
O. W.
Beautiful place, amazing food and impeccable service. Highly recommended!
K. W.
Great food, great coffee!
J. T.
Tasty meal. Good vibes
H. R.
Had the salmon roti which was nice and spicey with a slight burn while you are enjoying it. Shame about the coffees as we could not get any hot enough to enjoy them.
B. A.
Such a funky spot. Everything about it is awesome and so 'Melbourne'. Food and coffee is amazing. Highly recommended and be sure to book before you go
e. i.
I only ordered a cappuccino (no food)- the coffee taste isn’t to my taste (a little weak for my liking) and milk wasn’t very frothy. It was my first time here though, maybe I will have a better coffee next time.
I. M.
This is our local coffee spot and we go here often. Staff are super friendly and they know their regulars :) Cool location, good coffee, great food!
G. F.
Hidden gem in Carlton alley. Search for Google images and you can see a lot of decent food as well as coffees images. It's a all round highly rated Cafe. French toast with Charcoal lime ice cream is a must try.
C. T.
Good environment. Not to hard to find for a traveller like me. The food is good and the coffee tasted so great. Friendly staff and wonderful people. Highly recommended. The price is reasonable too.
A. B.
I have never had a bad meal at this place. Hell, I've never had an average meal there. Plus the coffee is great, and so are the vibes.
P. B.
Great vibe, friendly staff, tasty treats and good coffee.
M. C.
Exquisite coffee and an outstanding menu. Polenta encrusted soft-poached eggs - amazing! This place will be on our must-go-again list the next time we visit Melbourne.
S. J.
Virtue is home of a classic Melbourne cafe experience.
Does it hide down an alley behind a filthy mechanic? Check.
Does it have a unique industrial interior with a coffee roaster as the centrepiece of the room? Check.
Is the menu full of ingredients you've never bought but still delicious? Check.
Do staff have beards? Well... Mostly.
Virtue is the must visit for tourists needing to experience something that is Quintessential Melbourne.
A. T.
A hidden gem for great coffee and a very good choice of food. Loved the Harissa scrambled. Be ready to wait for a good few minutes... worth the wait for sure.
P. C.
I've never been to a place in Melbourne with such great costumer service. I felt really welcomed here. The waffles are amazing! It's difficult to find, but one you're in Coles gas station, you'll find this Melbournian hidden jam
D. Y.
Perfect example of Melbourne lane way cafe, tucked away in a little lane way with no advertisement outside. You could walk pass it within meters and not find it.
Nice ambiance inside, brightly lit, good food and great service.
C. W.
Surprisingly average coffee. Mine was too hot and my partner’s was a bit tasteless. Used to have excellent coffee. Maybe a bad day? But was pretty disappointed given the reputation.
M. F.
Great space. Excellent coffee
J. T.
there are already lots of great photos of here. but as a first time visitor who felt self conscious walking in alone in the afternoon. The staff were welcoming, patient and totally nice. oh and the coffee (skim magic) well i think i had a little moment of extacy.
J. D.
Impeccable coffee, which is fortunately common in melbourne (though not in carlton surprisingly) but the thing they did which was truly outstanding is their mocha. A delightful dark bitter chocolate which complemented the coffee perfectly without being too sweet. I tend to drink mocha when I need a comforting drink, and I've never felt more comforted
w. o.
One of my favourite all time coffee places. Breakfast done well, superb coffee, amazing staff, and a very well-stocked treat box next to the cashier for takeaways.
D. H.
Great music and vibe, friendly staff and a great place to stop off after a long bike ride.
Amazing selection of roasts and plenty of awesome food too, you won't be disappointed of you stop off here!
Keep up the good work.
M. K.
Great staff I met the owners who are passionate about what they do and the food is incredible.
J. Z.
Amazing menu, a nice twist on traditional dishes. The coffee was smooth and rich and the staff were so friendly and helpful.
Also a really nice warm and welcoming interior.
C. K.
Amazing menu. Really reasonable prices. At least 5 dishes I wanted to try. Must come back! Go as far to say best cafe in Melbourne
E. L.
This place couldn't get more hipster if it tried. The food is great, staff friendly and decor unusual. Absolutely perfect for a Sunday brunch with family. Even my 5yo enjoyed herself.
A.
One of the best cafes in Melbourne. Coffee, food and service are outstanding, superior fitout. Particularly impressed with the extra attentive service I receive when dining solo.
L. C.
So good! Everything! We were google-searching a good brunch spot and hit the jackpot. Great coffee and food. Will definitely be back.
S. J.
Fast, friendly service. Incredible food that isn't just your average brekky. Will definitely be back!! Pea smash with egg + goats curd was on point!
J. T.
My dudes this is a popular spot- book ahead if you can because the food is * chefs kiss *. A really great breakfast spot.
P. D.
Tasty food and good coffee, but slightly expensive and a little hipster. The cafe might be wedged between a shopping centre and a mechanic, but the high ceiling and skylights make the place feel roomier than it is.
T. K.
I was having barista breakfast which was excellent.
Location is a little hard to find though.
D. T.
Very cool atmosphere, called ahead to get a table because we had a baby with us and they were very accommodating! Also the coffee is the best. The. Best.
A. S. M.
Very nice place, good fresh food with surprising tastes. The vibe was awesome with fast service and friendly staff. The only downside was the location. Overall I really liked the place.

The place was really busy. We waited 20 minutes for a table. We were told the food will take an hour to arrive so we had to get some cakes to start off with as we were starving. But the place was good and coffee was great

Tucked away in an alley, some of the best coffee in Melbourne, the food is a little pricey but quite good. Gets a bit crowded, probably not a good place to work.
B. M.
5 stars for their coffee and their love for public health!

The staff here are absolute legends. The food is fricken amazeballs. A place for coffee snobs. A winning cafe in my books. One of the best in the inner north.

Beautiful breakfast and brunch. All staff is very qualified and friendly. The ambient is comfortable, perfect to meet friends and have a chat.
R. S.
Excellent menu with a variety of interesting and different options. Varied coffee options, all of which are well executed. Can be a wait on food and drinks when busy.
P. K.
Head chef Matt Green’s menu contains a variety of options that are more focused on being good then being on trend. Sure there’s qunioa (although arguable that’s not on trend any more) and chia seeds but nothing feels like it’s on there just for the sake of it. If you see something that’s currently all the rage on the menu it’s because it genuinely adds something to the dish.
E.
A gem of a coffee shop a little off the beaten track, you have to duck behind a petrol station to find it! Nice staff, cute deco and delicious food.
A. C.
The salmon rosti is delicious!😁 As always, the coffee was amazing with very attentive service by Emily and Kale 😀

Wow just Wow The Pasion and admiration for the art of just getting it right to every offering on the menu to feed you but the experience of beautiful Boutique InHouse rostery and choice of wonderful extensive coffee selections allways rotating and a touch of joyful professional personal service This is By Far one of my favorite places to enjoy that delicious brew and feel in CafeNation utopia. ☕💯
