Comments of Black Star Pastry Newtown
S. E. D.
The Insta famous Watermelon cake certainly lives up to the hype... Light, fragrant and delicious. I also purchased the Chocolate Mirage but it wasn't to my liking, however my kids demolished it 😊
I got here late in the day and was lucky to get my hands on the last Watermelon Cake... I highly recommend ordering ahead to avoid disappointment.
Parking is a challenge so be prepared to walk a distance, if your not in a rush make the most of it and enjoy a coffee ☕
Overall a bit pricey, but the Watermelon Cake is worth the experience so give it a go!

Black Star Pastry is famous for the strawberry watermelon cake. Over the years, other cakes are developed and they taste very nice too.
Nevertheless, a tiny slice of cake can cost somewhere from $9. Still worth a try.

Being a Brisbane boy, I had heard of Blackstar's watermelon cake from my friends, and decided it was a novelty worth trying on my recent visit to Sydney.
It turned out to be much better than just a novelty experience, overall being quite refreshing and light. I also tried the Japanese Forest cake, again, something I have never heard of or tried anything like before. I can't say it would be to everyone's taste, but I did enjoy it.
Price wise you can expect to pay $10+ for a slice of cake. They also offer other savoury and dessert pastries that begin at cheaper price points.
There coffee was above average, not something I'd visit the store as the sole attraction, but definitely better than many a cup I've had before.
The Cafe offers limited seating inside, so be prepared to takeaway if busy.

I had their watermelon cake almost 8 years ago and I visited them again recently and the flavour was still so refreshing and delicious. It hasn't changed at all! I also tried their sesame cheese cake. It wasn't overly sweetened and the texture was very smooth. It is still one of my top 5 favourite cake restaurants in Sydney.
A. L.
After all these years, strawberry cake is still tasting as good as it first came out many years ago. Maintaining good standard in taste is not an easy thing to do. Applause here.
m. h.
A favourite place in Newtown, cakes available are flavoursome and very pretty. Always come here for their famous watermelon cake
A. K.
One of the popular place to grab unique flavoured watermelon cake, nice dessert to satisfy your taste buds. There are other cakes too. Either dine in or take away. Enjoyed the environment.

I've been a big fan of Black Star Pastry by proxy for years, however I have only just made it to the shop for the first time today!
My local coffee shop used to sell the Black Star pies so it's been a while since I got my fix, but my Lamb & Onion pie (pictured) did not disappoint!
I am a removalist and get around a lot of places as well as eating my fair shair of pies. Obviously it is subjective, but the pies at Black Star are some of the best in Syndey!
If you are a pie lover, get it in your belly!!!

The service was very good, the number of people is limited and cannot be used inside. We were 4 people at the time, and they only let us in 3, so we can only take out, and the bad thing is that the tableware is not attached.
P. B.
We ordered the watermelon cake for my kids birthday. The communication on delivery was excellent and the cake arrived intact. Everyone in the party loved the cake and said that it’s the best cake they have had. It looked amazing as well. One odd thing is that they do not deliver to few postcodes but go around and deliver to areas far away. It would be really nice if they could deliver to all postcodes in Sydney.
J. G.
Originally ordered the mango cake and last minute requested to change to the watermelon cake instead and the staff were able to accommodate this for me with ease. Amazing service and the cake was absolutely incredible! Will be back without a doubt.
R. T.
If you are looking for an authentic sydney’s food then choose this place. The cake is damn goooood
K. O.
It's all about the Strawberry Watermelon Cake here they are the signature and the best cake around. Not too heavy, fragrance, easy to eat and delicious. Most of all the cake they create are always impressive. The Raspberry lychee cake, Pistachio lemon zen cake & chocolate mirage were my favourite. Pastries were not bad here and the coffee by little marionette was alright. Just go for all their cake for any occasion you wouldn't be disappointed.
J. C.
This place lives up to the hype. The strawberry watermelon cake was absolutely delicious. I can’t believe they made this taste so good without it getting soggy. We also tried the pistachio cake which was delicious as well. This is well worth the stop, although I may be biased because there was no line at all when we stopped in. Cakes are a bit on the pricey side but I didn’t think it was expensive. The portion is just right for a dessert.
h. S.
Watermelon was delicious and really light, complimented perfectly with hint of rose wate. The other one is the pistachio lemon zen cake and the cream was beautiful and pistachios paired perfectly with chocolate mousse and lemon curd. Highly recommend to try this the coffee as well as it was made just right!
A. C. (.
I must say that the strawberry watermelon rose cake is really delicious.
I will visit on special days every year.
Fill myself with good mood and vitality all day long.
The clerk's service is very kind, much better than the CBD service.
The only downside: the price of the cake is getting more expensive year by year, now it costs $9.
But I will still visit to give myself a good mood.
I am also willing to recommend others to come and taste it once.
N. C.
Came all the way from Marsden Park, just buy strawberry watermelon cake. It was actually amazing and tasted great. The service was really nice as well friendly lads.
C. R. C.
As what we remember
He was not a fan of this watermelon cake but every once in a while now he wants it 😋
More fancy setting compared to what I remember
Just hope the seating is bigger
T. K. L. (.
Atmosphere and vibe here are quite cool with nice design.
We ordered the followings:
- Rose Watermelon Cakes
- Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake
- Beef Pie
- Flat White
The watermelon cake taste ok but the structure is quite weak. When you are expecting something solid or soft like cream from the cake so that you enjoy both texture, it feels like a incomplete building with yet-dried sand.
The beef pie is wonderful. It really makes my day with the crispiness and the taste of it.
And the pistachio cake is way too sweet but the taste is good that I would bear the sweetness and taste another bite of it.
(I understand the pastry may not have good coffee. As I expected, the coffee does not taste good compared to other cafes I tried in other cafes. I did not count that into my comments though because that’s not their specialty.)
C. Y.
For a rather cute and hipster cafe, this place boasts beautifully sculpted cakes of unusual combinations such as the strawberry watermelon cake I had.
My friend craved for this and drove me all the way down for this particular cake. I can say that the prices are a bit pricey ($8 for a small slice) but was definitely worth a bite. It was refreshingly enticing even after many mouthfuls, however having the pastry was definitely a bit messy as it was so tall.
Overall a good experience as staff were patient and smiley during the wait.

The cake that never gets out of fashion, the infamous strawberry watermelon cake. Whenever I'm in need of a birthday cake, this is the my go to cake. Those perfect layers, the cake is as visually pleasing as it is delightfully tasting. Not too sweet, very well balanced. It never disappoints. It is a true icon. I always order larger cakes online, you can skip the line when picking it up at the store.
M. S.
Definitely recommend their famous watermelon cake! To be honest haven’t tried anything else there apart from the coffee which is also amazing but have bought this cake a few times. Black Star Pastry in Newtown make this really easy via an online ordering system on their website. There is a different area to pick up the cake which wasn’t 100% clear the first time but pretty easy to figure out. Highly recommend you get the watermelon cake if you won’t get a chance to come back and try something else.
C.
The famous strawberry watermelon cake is worth a try at least once! It is rather pricy at $9 a slice but unique and delicious.
The coffee is also slightly above average in price. I had a large latte and it was bigger than I expected so well worth it’s price.
My friend had a chai latte which actually had the “spice” of the chai which is quite rare to find.
There is not a lot of seating though so be prepared to takeaway if required.
D. M.
On the weekend, this bakery is perpetually packed but thank god I now work from home and can enjoy it during the week without having to queue - my favourite is their sausage rolls - tasty, juicy and with crispy pastry! Decent coffee and friendly service
K. Y.
Not bad, but the price is way too high for the quantity of cake served. The cafe is also too small to find a place to sit down and enjoy.
Z. W.
Amazing Pastry, Amazing staff!!
Will definitely be back especially for this delicious dessert.
K. A. M. (. K.
Had a cuppa of double shot macs, was great experience.
The strawberry watermelon cake was quite refreshing for a gloomy cloudy drizzling afternoon. The sweet cold freshness give life to the humidity of the air around us.
Double shots macchiato was only for resets to taste the cake.
The Japanese Forest cake was more like Black Forest cake with a green matcha like base layer sponge cake. Other than that it was okay.
Looking forward to taste more kind of cakes.
M. L.
I don't understand the hype surrounding this place. I would actually give the place 2/5 stars but it gets 3, because the pastries are still better than other local bakeries.
The pastries here - pain au raisin and chocolate croissant - were just so-so, but we're way overpriced. I wouldn't buy them again.
The staff also came across as quite unfriendly, and it's not like it was busy when I was there.
A. S.
Came for the famed strawberry watermelon cake (even though there were lots of other yummy looking things). It was beautiful and the taste was decadent yet still amazingly light and refreshing. Definitely recommend! There's not much space at the cafe itself (they have some outdoor space plus an indoor space next door to the counter area). Even on an early Friday afternoon, there isn't much space so take-away is probably the best option.
T. L.
This place is popular for watermelon strawberry cake. I ordered a single portion ($8) and macadamia brownie ($5.5) with flat white ($3.5). They are decent quality though very limited seats available. Located just nearby Newtown station and nice atmosphere. Would recommend and visit again.
e. L.
There was queue at the store but service was prompt. Refreshing cakes with watermelon, raspberry or Lychee. Rather over priced though considering the size of the cake.
S. C.
Food
Watermelon cake is a bit overrated but the raspberry watermelon cake and the vegan chocolate popcorn cake are amazing. Pistachio lemon was pretty good too.
Service
Staff were a bit rude to my friend.
Ambience
It’s okay, a bit cramped so suggest take away.
A. H.
The cakes are delicious. We tried the pistachio, the second best selling because they run out of the water melon cake. The coffee was ok. The place is very small and very compacted.
A. S.
Came here on a recommendation to specifically try the watermelon cake. Not disappointed, worth the 16 minute bus journey from the city center. Exactly what you would expect from a watermelon cake, without being overwhelming.
Vibe is cosy and welcoming!
F. L.
Came here to try out the cakes before going back to brisbane. I can see why the strawberry watermelon cake was the bestseller. It’s crunchy and refreshing, adds a different twist to the common fruit cakes out there. The lychee raspberry was a little underwhelming though, not much of the lychee taste.
J. P.
Thank you very much. Such a beautiful cake. Order delivered in excellent condition. Great customer service. Highly recommended.
L.
Great cozy vibes! if they have more seats,it'd be great.
H. H.
Loved the watermelon cake. Very busy and limited seating. Would suggest take-away and walk to closest park - bit too crowded for eat in. Didn’t enjoy the ice tea.
A. L.
Black star had a pop up store at the Melbourne noodle markets.
The watermelon cake is very refreshing and delicious. It's creamy, juicy, crispy and presented very well.
The $8 price tag is a tad steep but it's worth a try if you have never tried it.
E. B.
Recently, my girlfriend and I dipped into black star pastry in Newtown for a bite of brunch. Surprisingly there was not a huge line as I had expected, and we were served quite quickly.
We bought a ham and cheese croissant, as well as the famous watermelon cake (because that's why everyone goes really!). The croissant was tasty and fresh. The cake had an interesting unexpected rose-like flavour to it. Tasty but very filling. This was a bucket-list type experience that I've now complete.
They had limited seating, but we managed to find a tiny seat inside next to the window.
c. h. n.
There’s only one thing you need to know when you come to this place - watermelon cake! Please do yourself a favor and order a slice or watermelon cake, or two or even the bigger portion ones. It’s just that good. Only issue with this place is that it’s quite small and gets a little packed at times. They’ve recently opened up more tables next door to accommodate extra patrons so that’s good!
B. C.
Their Fresh "Strawberry Watermelon Cake" is one of my favorite cake in sydney. It's also a good choice as a birthday cake!
O. N.
The strawberry watermelon cake was impressive, beyond my imagination, delicious and beautiful, worthy to have a try.
AUD$8 for 1 portion (for 1 person)
S. B.
Nice cafe in Newtown. They have to block for the tables. I when their to get a cake for my friend’s birth day. It was really delicious. The coffee was good and they fill the cake for choosing all the time. If you go on the weekend there have the market, which is very close to the cafe. Easy to walk to but a bit hard to get car parking sometimes.
F. G.
Legendary Water Melon Cake with Lychee. Never had a cake with such a freshness and juicyness like that. The aroma from the rose water perfectly nuances the deliciousness of the cake. Fantastic dessert for an afternoon snack. The place might be a bit small, so I always phone order for take away.
J. L.
Awesome cafe in Newtown. Must order the watermelon cake! They have limited seats though.
M. T.
Their dragonfruit cake was good, would recommend. However there are very limited seats inside the cafe.
K. T. E.
Average coffee and custom cake collection. This newbie chain is going a long way but hope they bring more authentic cakes (different countries) along with the best selling watermelon cake.
N. D.
Good cakes - service can be up and down. Surprisingly, they are better when busy as they aren't talking amongst themselves and act like you've ruined their party.
I suggest Persian Orange Cake with the rose petals on top or the Watermelon cake
L. W.
Woo hoo.. Decadent cakes and really good coffees. The Strawberry Watermelon cake is a must-try. The pistachio cake is nice but a little tad sweet.
The cafe is only a short walk from Newtown station.
P. E.
One of my favourite cakes and especially in the warmer months.
s. j.
Tried different types of cakes but my favorite was definitely the watermelon cake. The watermelon cake was mouthwatering, flavorful and delightful. During our two-week trip to Sydney, we went to Black Star Pastry twice and it was INCREDIBLE!
L. W.
Great for a treat. Never without a line, but you can usually find a seat. We ordered our wedding cakes from here and it was relatively easy, although they did not have delivery available.
B. L.
The Watermelon cake is my favourite. A must try if it’s your first time here :)
R. N.
Have been here finally! We can’t find the watermelon cake in HK so this is the must go for us. The watermelon cake is super yum, lychee cake is also good! Why I think the piccolo in OZ is better? Lol
e. a.
Even with the new modern shop the taste stayed the same.... watermelon 🍉 cake yum 😋
X. Y.
This is absolutely a place to check in. The famous watermelon cake tastes as good as it looks. The street it's located in is quite artistic and easy to park.
W. O.
Famous strawberry watermelon cake. I hope the price of the cakes are skyrocketing, otherwise it is definitely a great coffee and pastry shop.
K. L.
I got the strawberry cake delivered for my bf birthday during lockdown. It was raining but the cake was perfect when it arrived. Staff was so friendly.
R. N.
Took my friends visiting from overseas to BlackStar in Newtown so they could try the watermelon cake and their good coffee. It was an enjoyable food experience for them.
S. Y.
Friendly staff and very helpful. I ordered thro the phone n said i will pick it up after 2pm. But sth came up so i need to pick up the cake sooner. So i rang them up to see if i can pick up during the morning. The staff was nice and willing to help, even tho they couldnt get that ready in the morning but she tried her best, she full went to discuss with the chef and got my order ready by mid day. Appreciate it.
B. R. A.
The watermelon cake is great, but expensive. It's one of those things you have to try for a special occasion. You can make a reservation for the cake, but you can also go in and they generally have something.
H. S. Y.
Tried their famous watermelon cake, it was quite innovative but somehow doesn’t really live up to the hype. The cake crumbles really easily so eat w care !!!
G.
Super yum cakes, especially the fan our watermelon cake.
I preferred the cafe when it was in its old location though.
W. Y.
Good Service , The cake is tasty
A. M.
Watermelon cake is a favourite at our place but everything taste so fresh and delicious from here, very yum
L. S. C.
Awesome creative cake! The watermelon best match with the tiramisu cake. A piece of watermelon cake with a cup of latte is just a perfect matching! Definitely highly recommended.
E. L.
Their strawberry watermelon cake is famous for a reason. It is a must get everytime you come here. Worth the long wait
보. D.
Signature cake. Strawberry watermelon cake is really unique. I would recommend everyone to try at least once.
I was surprised about that nice combination with watermelon and cake. Brilliant!
C. A.
The famous watermelon cake - really worth a try in this lovely neighborhood.
Taste fresh and light.
Very beautiful presentation also.
S. S.
They’re good and always crowded!
They’ve good coffee and different kinds of fruity cakes. Like their watermelon cake. Really unique tastes.
S. ..
The pastries were okay. It's a hit or a miss. We got a lovely Japanese Forrest cake which was delicious and rich. The strawberry watermelon cake looks pretty but doesn't taste all that pretty. And they're apparently too fancy for labels on their cakes so....
C. I.
I buy their cakes many times. It’s worth to try when you are in Sydney. Especially the watermelon cake!
J. L.
House made iced tea was refreshing but the Black Forest cake was average - a little dry. Their signature watermelon cake is a good choice at Black Star. Average service, small seating area at this outlet.
O. B.
I also tried watermelon cake it was really nice had a fresh taste it wasnt overwhelming. Fair prices, friendly staff.
G.
Revisit Sydney,Strawberry watermelon cake is still delicious.🤩🍓🍉🍰
A. R.
Heard about the watermelon cake so I had to check out for myself.
I brought the cakes takeaway... It is a small cafe and it gets very busy.
H. N. N.
Never disappoints! Shared the Watermelon cake with my friends. It was delicious!!
D. C.
They have the BEST watermelon cake ever ! Must try when come to sydney ! Worth it to try
J. G.
Missing the charm of the old boutique store but still incredible pastry
T.
Named after his 25th and final studio album, BlackStar is Australia's only authentic Bowie tribute cafe, with album inspired menu items including 'Spice Oddity' and 'Life on Mars-bar'. RIP Starman, enjoy your watermelon cake in the sky.
J. S.
Great cakes and service as well but can’t help thinking it’s expensive at $9 for a slice of watermelon cake!
H. M. M.
Cozy place, obviously signature strawberry and watermelon cake (couldnt try due to allergy) chia pudding with fruit was delicious . Friendly staff. Seems always busy
S. Y. L.
This pistachio cake tastes really nice, and I think it is even better than the strawberry watermelon cake
M. P.
I've been going here occasionally for the past 5 years and while I feel the quality's dropped off a bit, it's still one of the best bakeries in Sydney.
The strawberry watermelon cake is still a MUST EAT in Sydney. The lamb shank & red wine pie is still one of the best pies in Australia. Both are pricier than your average cake & pie, but the taste is worth it.
Even if you don't pick their 2 signature dishes, everything on the menu is a delight.
N. G.
Delicious food and drinks. Lovely staff and outstanding customer service. Highly recommend. The pastry here is amazing it’s very nice and feels and tastes homemade. Delicious food and drinks. Lovely staff and outstanding customer service. With easy access due to the close proximity to the train station. Great place for pastries. Delicious food and drinks. Lovely staff and outstanding customer service. Highly recommend. The pastry here is amazing it’s very nice and feels and tastes homemade. Delicious food and drinks. I had a slice the other day and I’ve been thinking about going back since! Great place for pastries. Delicious food and drinks. Lovely staff and outstanding customer service. Highly recommend. The pastry here is amazing The drinks here are also very nice, the combo hits the spot perfectly!! Very very very very very nice would most definitely recommend!
J. H.
Highly recommend their signature watermelon cake. Had a chance to try the pistachio as well and omg it was absolutely amazing. I find the price was quite high, probably due to its reputation but surely it was a nice treat in a while. Also, service was very quick despite being busy on the weekend
J. B.
The cakes are all so beautiful to look at. I’ve brought the watermelon cake a few times as a gift for friends. It always delights when I turn up with it. They have a few options that are gluten free. The coffee is also great. Best bet is to get there early in the day as it is a tiny store and gets very crowded. Despite the crowds the staff remain friendly and relaxed and don’t rush you to make a choice- which really can be hard.
T. N.
I'd love to give 5 stars and more, the cake is unbelievably great. We always order Watermelon cake when it's a special occasion, but the staff at the pickup area is rude and so far in 2019 either myself or my partner has purchased 5 10 portion sized Watermelon cake. That's $350. But each time either of us went to pick up the cake, the service was terrible. Please bring the staff training up to par, it's such a shame, you provide great products, but below par service.
D. V.
My first experience at the Black Star Pastty Newtown was amazing! There had been an error with my order which I believe was partially my fault, however Omar and the staff went above and beyond to rectify the issue and to ensure I would be happy with the end result. The watermelon and the lychee gluten free cake were delicious and I highly recommend it.
Thank you Omar and all the staff, you guys made my day and my wife was very happy with her birthday cake. Definitely see you guys again.
H. H.
We ordered the pistachio cake to take out and we were just mesmerised by the unique flavour and delicacy of it. 👍🏻
S. H.
I have been buying from Black Star Pastry for a little while now and I can hands down say they are the best cafe in Sydney. Never had a bad coffee (huge claim) from these guys and their pastries and cakes are ALWAYS fresh, fragrant and flavoursome. Keep up the good work, Black Star! 🖤🌈
A. W.
Famous for their watermelon and strawberry cake, which is to die for! They’re a bit pricey ($7-8 a slice) for the portion size, but honestly totally worth it. The cake is so fresh, light, and fragrant (I think they use rose water?).
J. P.
Strawberry watermelon cake is so nice.. I like that taste :) I wanna visit one more someday..
G. T.
I loved loved that Strawberry Watermelon Cake with my cup of tea at home. Taste was really fresh but at the same time sweet and nice.
N.
Apart from the fact that there is no name on the shop, making it difficult to locate for those who are coming for the first time...it's a great shop!
S. N. K.
Great Cake
Cheap Price!
They dont have many tables
Better avoid their busy time.
D. T.
I love all the cakes and coffees they’v made. Very tasty and beautiful, especially the strawberry watermelon cake. Really love to have a cup of cappuccino and a cake there in a nice sunny morning. However, the shop is too small, always crowded and very limited street parking.
s. w.
I have been waiting to try this place for quite sometime and final went during the week. The cakes look so amazing and it was soo difficult to choose but we decided on the famous Strawberry watermelon cake and the Pistachio Zen cake. The french pastries look good too, definitely be back to try them
K. B.
Great coffee and cakes. Love their signature watermelon cake.
S. L.
Pie was excellent…good ingredients and accordingly expensive…but the miserable and unhelpful and rude girl who served was very surly and unhelpful and needs training or replaced by someone who is service oriented and trained !! Won’t be back !!!!!
W. B.
This place is fantastic, every time I go there I try a different pastry/cake and every time they are completely unique and delicious. Really this place is one of a kind in that regard, there are some desserts that are wholly unique to Black Star and for that I will continue going back.
The standard recommendation for this place is of course the strawberry watermelon cake with rose scented cream, a bit tricky to eat but absolutely fantastic.
J. M.
Great pastry. Customer service is a bit lacking. Ordered several pies. Waited around while the staff was all chatting wondering why it took so long for pies to be put in bags. Then one of my pies was missing meaning people had to share a meal. Try the food but count them on your way out
L. A.
I've tried the best, fresh, gluten free cake, Strawberry and Watermelon Rose Cream! Would definitely recommend this place to friends. I ordered through phone to pick up a 4 portion cake and picked up next day and it was presented very nice. Even though it's a small cafe, the place serves nice coffee and very lovely pastries. Would love to try their other pastries next time.
T. D.
It is a very small bakery so it is an issue if you want to eat your pastries on the spot so it's best to opt in for takeaway unless you happen to score a seat. All the pastries and gourmet pies look amazing but my all time favourite is the watermelon and strawberry cake. Have yet to try out their coffee but have heard nothing but good responses. Definitely try out this place for sweet and savoury treats!
u.
Mixed experiences at Black Star Pastry. Which is the best cake? that's up to personal taste, just as all good pastry shops, technically Black Star is very good. The most famous is the strawberry watermelon cake, and is the only reason most customers would put up with the temperamental below average service and lack of seating. The rest of the cakes whilst good can be substituted but still worth a visit. Another small store victim of its own success, management really needs to address the issues and scale up.
Read full review and photos on my blog.

What a fantastic café! Cool funky vibe, awesome cakes and pastries with super friendly staff! You must try the watermelon cake as it is totally original and different! So much effort goes into the presentation not to mention the quality and taste being out of this world! Be prepared to wait in line and wait for a table as the space is very small. Peak times you may not get a seat so try get in early otherwise takeaway is a good alternative! There is loads of street parking so just do laps and you will surely come across a spot!
S. M.
Watermelon cake is perfect EVERY time. Go before midday so they don't run out. The first time I visited they had sold out so I settled for a lamb sausage roll, which was excellent.
J. C.
Their signature peace is the strawberry watermelon cake which has people lining out the door and to be honest I think this is probably a case of each to their own. Obviously it's popular for many people and the fruit in it is definitely fresh it's a new combination that I had not seen or heard of before but I don't think I would specifically get the cake again. It also looks like there's some other really tasty food there but I haven't tried it yet. The cake is very expensive for 2 very small slices it is $16. Basically my suggestion would be try something else at the same place.
H. T.
The pastry and coffee was good, the watermelon cake was refreshing. Staff were really friendly, especially would like to thank them for holding onto my wallet when I dropped it at their store, real life saver. Thank you!
I. L.
So great! Went as a party of 5, so pretty lucky to score a seat - space is tight, so definitely snug, but the amazing cakes and excellent coffee make it well worth the trip.
Obviously their famous watermelon cake is delicious, but also had a lychee cake which was just incredible. Thanks for being awesome, guys!
S. D.
I popped by early morning and saw preparatory work being done some 90 minutes before open hours. I knocked on the door and made a special request for a personalised birthday cake. I was exceedingly impressed with the friendly manner and welcomed by Edward in store to talk about what could be done regarding a vegan cake for my mum's birthday that I needed on the same day.
A really big cake (12 portions) with some nice synchronicity playing its part as their only cake in the vegan range involved Caramel popcorn as a topping which happens to be one of my mum's favourite sweet treats.
After trying the cake myself, I have to say the amalgamation of the subtly sharp and zingy freeze dried raspberry, chewy, crunchy caramel popcorn with the soft, gooey and mild chocolate cake was brilliant.
Very palatable as a combo, on its own, the elements don't go quite as far, so I'm quite impressed with the cake as a whole.
5 stars for the overall experience, 6.9/10 for the cake.
Thanks heaps crew, you guys made my day, and mum enjoyed the cake
:)

The watermelon cake is the best, so tasty and very refreshing.
J. L.
Cakes are incredible, in particular the renowned Strawbery Watermelon cake. The pistachio is excellent if you've got a (very) sweet tooth.
Also, don't order coffee here if there's a long line - the barista is seriously overworked and you'll end up waiting a bit longer than you'd normally expect.
L. C.
The cakes are divine. Coffee is good and the service great, The space is really small if you want to eat in and they have a little shop a few doors up so you can eat there as well At Christmas time, don't go past the fruit mine pies, they are amazing. the pastry is soft and delicate and filling is yum!
L. D.
BEST pie of my life - I have tried the lamb w/ red wine, chicken curry and beef in beer pies and they are all amazing. The pastry is so lush, flaky and flavourful. Like the best stew ever wrapped in scrumptious pastry.
Coffees are great, staff are friendly!
They are always bombarded with instagram fiends, so it is pretty crowded - but this is their fault for making everything so damn delicious!!
w. x.
Tiny space but filled with great cakes and pastries. Their coffees are great as well. The only problem is there isn't too many space to sit inside the shop or outside. My favourite food is the watermelon and strawberry cake, their pies and quiches are great too. Also ordered their other food like chocolate tarts, everything is tasty ! Might be long queue to get into the shop, especially on weekends

Black Star is a victim of its own success, at least from my perspective: what was an amazing local café-patisserie has ended up primarily being about a single menu item (the watermelon cake) sold primarily to a clientele from out-of-suburb. I wouldn’t begrudge that if I didn’t think the basics had suffered: what once was the best ham-and-cheese croissant in the world no longer is and the coffee is not up to par – not to mention the crowding and service time issues that its popularity has brought.
B. G.
Oh Boy. Magnificent pastries is what is on offer here. If you don't like pastries, you still have to try what is served at Black Star Pastry. Stunning edibles.
The coffee shop revolutionaries may well have made their way over from Starbucks, but if you can wait patiently in line for the skinny trouser crowd to have their orders completed, you will be glad you made the effort. Tremendously delicious nibblage.
A. K.
Ordered our wedding cake (well, one half of our two cakes anyway) from Black star so that tells you something. Be wary of the queues because this is definitely not Sydney's best kept secret, and for good reason. I always order the strawberry and watermelon cake but I also recommend their pies and quiches. Amongst my most highly recommended bakeries/cafes.
J. V.
I am a Newtown local and I've been hearing and seeing people rave about the strawberry watermelon cake with the rose scented cream on instagram.
I had finally found a reason and opportunity to buy the cake. It was for Father's Day. I've walked past many times but there is always a long massive queue and not much room to seat people. That kind of stirred me away from actually having a sit down.
However, after ordering the cake online and tasting it I think the queue is totally worth it! Its so yummy and refreshing. Nice and light. A must for foodie instagrammers!!!

This review will be based on travellers standpoint having visited twice! (Wishing I could've visited more). This was my first time in Sydney and my friend took me strolling around Newtown he brought me to Black Star Pastry! A place that was known for their strawberry watermelon cakes.
I have never heard of this place ever and I was amazed at it's populatirty and being one of the most Instagrammed desserts in Australia. With having enjoyed all the vegan dishes that Sydney has to offer (I'm not vegan) I was stoked to try the Watermelon cake!
PRO TIP:
Pair any cake with either a FLAT WHITE or MOCHA, and limit phone time to one photo and just enjoy the cake, coffee and company with your mate!
Strawberry Watermelon Cake:
*A must try!*
-The flavors and textures just go so well together, not overly sweet and wet (considering the watermelon layer).
-The strawberry and pistachio/rose pedal garnish were nice touches (definitely Instagram travel worthy).
-The cream was moist and actually my favorite part!
NOTE: Sometimes you might get a batch or slice where the watermelon is not soft/moist (aka ripe enough) where you might have to push down on the fork a bit to get all the layers, the second time I went I had just that, where taking out the melon layer was the way to go rather than having the cake get all ruined and you just get mush.
Raspberry Lychee Cake:
*My favorite VS the watermelon*
-I loved this cake! it was soo moist, right textures and flavors that compliment each other well!
-The raspberry marshmallow and rose cream was moist and flavorful
-It has a layer of chocolate biscuit as its base so that contrast makes it a very distinguishable dessert layer after layer with every bite
To conclude, I wish I could've tried more of their specialty cakes, they have seasonal cakes as well, such as The dragon cake, and pistachio lemon zen cakes. I definitely will visit again when I am in Sydney!
C. S.
Delicious food and drinks. Lovely staff and outstanding customer service. Highly recommend.
M. P.
delicious but expensive, inflated because of the fad??
J. L.
House made iced tea was refreshing but the Black Forest cake was average - a little dry. Their signature watermelon cake is a good choice at Black Star. Average service, small seating area at this outlet.
陳.
Really delicious. It must eat in Sydney.
J. M.
Great pastry. Customer service is a bit lacking. Ordered several pies. Waited around while the staff was all chatting wondering why it took so long for pies to be put in bags. Then one of my pies was missing meaning people had to share a meal. Try the food but count them on your way out
Y.
Love the cake
a. 1.
It’s very appetizing!!!!!!
A. W.
Famous for their watermelon and strawberry cake, which is to die for! They’re a bit pricey ($7-8 a slice) for the portion size, but honestly totally worth it. The cake is so fresh, light, and fragrant (I think they use rose water?).
D. P. (. P.
Had this place recommend by my french housemate for croissants. Honesty best croissant I had in 5 years of not being anywhere near France . The cakes look awesomely great presented, which kinda puts me off eating them. If I could I would give 5 stars for Croissant but considering the price I'll have to make it 4. Again , no critics .. this is just Sydney prices you gotta pay if you expect such good quality.
T. R.
I can't wander around Newtown without stopping by. The watermelon cake is hard to go past, but others on the menu are just as delicious (hint: vegan chocolate and popcorn cake). Coffee hits the spot as well.
But it is all about the food. It's a small shop that is insanely busy and staff that focus on making the customers inevitable wait as short as possible. Which means that the warm afterglow is the sugar rush not the human connection.
A. F.
This is a unique and fun café located in the bustling city of Newtown and offers various pastries and cakes all with a individual flavour profile. In addition, the drinks available at this locale are phenomenal especially hot beverages in the Winter months. Furthermore, I had the pleasure of being able to taste their "infamous" Strawberry & Watermelon Cake, which was, I must say, rather exquisite. It had various textures and consistencies that combined well with the jelly and watermelon wedged within the cake and exhibited notes of nutty flavours and rose, truly a marvel of this café. The customiser service here was adequate and they were quite nice, however some seemed to look very bored and upset, which was off-putting to customers.
Overall, a wonderful destination to enjoy marvellous pastries and cakes and consume beverages in what ever month of the year in the heart of the growing and urban locale of Sydney.
P. M.
Great coffee and fantastic pastry. Followed the hot tips and tried the watermelon cake - so good I had to order one for my friend's birthday. Join the queue - you won't regret waiting.
H. O.
I've never had such a delicious cake ever before. Didn't even think there was. The cafe is a pretty busy place so sometimes you won't get your preferred seat outside in the open but if you can afford waiting for a while you will be redeemed with enjoying a wonderful time.
l. w.
Nice n delicious cake, watermelon and strawberry sandwich layer.
G. C.
They have the best pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) in town! And believe me, I've tried way too many. And good coffee too. Also do try their signature strawberry watermelon cake too. It's a great place, but it can get really busy despite the new seating area in the adjacent shop.
S. A.
The OG place in Newtown you can always count on Blackstar to bring the goods! Beautiful cakes and of course the best cake in the world their signature watermelon cake. Seating here is limited but service is top notch, I also have ordered larger cakes from here for family birthdays and they have always been excellent. Highly recommend, it's a must drop by if you're in Newtown.
A. C.
Amazing bakery which deserves my 'Excellent' rating. I wouldn't go anywhere else when I want something sweet and chocolaty. I don't live exactly close to it but the drive is definitely worth it. At lunch hours it's even packed, so that speaks well for the place - if everyone eat there, it's obviously great.
T. W.
Finding this little bakery isn't hard, more often than not the long queue outside gives it away before you even cross the street, however, deciding on what to order is a completely different story. From the pastries to the gourmet pies to the lovely cakes and sweet treats on display, everything looks absolutely delectable. Seating is very limited so most would opt for takeaways when it's busy, unless you get lucky and score a stool or some space on the bench. Their cinnamon scroll is one of the best I've had and it goes beautifully with a cup of coffee. A must try for pastry lovers.
K. N.
The watermelon strawberry cake was excellent, unlike most cakes, it had a very light taste. It seemed very refined somehow, with a delicious almond meal base. Would recommend trying!
A. L.
Love the watermelon cake. So refreshing. The rose water gives a different touch. Thumbs up for this one.
L. C.
Having heard about the infamous watermelon cake, my friends and I ventured to Blackstar Pastry wanting to try the specialty. Without a doubt, the cake was delicious but the customer service was absolutely terrible! The male staff who served us this afternoon (7th Feb 2013) was incredibly rude to my friends and I from the moment we walked in. He was very impatient and when we asked if he could cut up the whole portion watermelon cake for us, he replied "No". When we asked if we could cut up the cake ourselves, he rudely replied "only if you want to destroy it".
This level of service is disappointing and no matter how great tasting your pastries are, they do not make up for a bad experience!
N. B.
You want the best its here sure it costs but the best is never cheap. The warermwlon cake is yes anticompetitive but different deeper and offerings like the Japanese Forrest Xake or the Coissants and its hard to go wrong..
E. S.
Pastry and other creations here are delicious and skillfully created. Once in a while, special menus are on offer if you are looking for a change from the "must-try" watermelon cake (it's definitely a winner, but don't limit yourself!). Coffee, however, is very inconsistent and milk is more often than not, burnt and bitter which is a shame given high quality of the beans used.
Lines are typical but moves fast enough. Seating is very limited so you might have to walk over and sit in Newtown square - better for people watching anyway. Service could improve as the occasional sense of attitude is present but depends on who is working - an unfortunate byproduct of being so popular I suppose.
A. D. (.
If you’re looking for a treat, this is a nice place to go.
However, they are kinda overpriced and considering the product isn’t always the same quality, that sucks.
The staff in Newtown are kinda rude, I’ve also seen them sitting on food prep areas to change music - and that’s kinda gross. I don’t want to be eating food tainted by your fart hole please - sorry - I’m an ex chef, these things just grind my gears.
I would highly recommend the other stores.
Please try the pies though (but ask them not to leave it on the counter in front of the oven / music player)
Specifically the Japanese curry, that thing is delicious.
A. o.
There are fancy and beautiful cakes which tastes awesome!
D. Z.
Just thanking you for excellent cake experience at shop Newtown. I come in yesterday and man staff recommend very nice carrot cake and pies. Lady barista with short hair make perfect coffee and very friendly and helping to us! Worth long queue wait, we see you soon!

A small cafe shop near the corner. The parking is very convenient. It is suitable for 2 to 3 people, not a group of people though. Because it is a very small shop and only a few seats. Good for take away. Love their watermelon cake. It's a must try dessert in Sydney. :)
S. M.
I purposely came here to try the famed Watermelon and Strawberry cake but unfortunately they had just sold the last piece. However, it gave me pause to try the raspberry brulee tart and an orange cake with persian fig & cream cheese icing. Absolutely delicious! An assortment of breads, meat pies and sandwiches are available. The space isn't very large so it's a good idea to takeaway.
E. Y.
I just got off the phone with Annette from Black Star Pastry Newtown regarding some questions I had about my brother's 21st birthday cake. Annette was absolutely amazing in her assistance! Her professionalism, genuine personality and patience are second to none and is absolutely an invaluable asset to the Black Star Pastry brand! Annette deserves to be commended highly! The best customer service I have ever received!!
D. D.
We first had the "goo" (chocolate caramel) tart 5 years ago and drooled watching the lava goodness overflow the plate. Black Star Pastry has been our standard visit in Newtown, also for its strawberry & watermelon cake, lemon myrtle chiffon cake, orange cake with Persian figs, plus more! These days, the chocolate caramel tart has lost its gooeyness but is still a great bite. We were there before the long queue began but will continue to visit and devour their offerings!
h. s.
good cakes and pastry. watermelon cake was good but was expecting much better from all the news i've heard. the shop is really cramped and tiny. Had confusion when i first came here and the vibe just felt off a bit (for me). the service isn't too great and seemed that they were lacking in staff
M. C.
Strawberry watermelon cake is so yummy and unique in its own way!
The salted caramel pana cotta was hands down the best dessert I've ever had! Be back next time I'm in Sydney
M. A.
Black star pastry has amazing food but terrible service. Nestled in the hipster end of Australia street the sometimes too cool for school staff make you feel like you are wasting your time. The food however is amazing with frequent queues around the block for their cakes and pastries. If you can put up with the tude for the food its worth it. The coffee is also a bit on the ordinary side.
R. L.
Must try strawberry watermelon cake! They have a great blend of taste.
H. F.
Just amazing patisserie. Lemon meringue pie with basil jelly perfect. The lamb shank and beef pies are excellent too, and the shop does a decent coffee and has a few seats for you to sit and greedily consume if you can't bear to wait until you get home.
M. R.
Friendly staff, quick service, great coffee and a clean shop. No idea what chocolate you used for the mocha but it's really good 🙂
L. S.
Pies were amazing! That new Japanese Katy's pie. And of course how can we not love that cake!
C. S.
Tucked away in the back streets is a small pastry shop. First thing to hit us upon walking in was the lovely smell of fresh pastry and smiling staff.
Ordered the sausage roll which was excellent. Food is well priced, and the cakes are so beautiful that its a challenge to eat!
Parking in the area can be difficult, so allow for additional time to find parking.
A. D.
I had an amazing adventure getting here.
Tucked away in the bustle of Newtown is this little bakery that I loved.
It was packed the first time I was here with a line out the door. I can see why though decent coffee with the second best pie I have ever tasted.
I didn't however try any of the deserts but it won't be the last time that I come to this place.
A. R.
If you're planning your first visit to Black Star Pastry, plan it for a weekday. Or more accurately, any weekday, just not around lunchtime. Unless you have time and patience for queuing, this bakery/cafe is still uber popular and uber busy. I live locally and know to avoid the busy times and hold out till later in the day, when a queue is less likely and a seat more probable. Busy times are good for business-but anyone expecting fawning service will be disappointed, staff are really under the pump during these periods. I've noticed in previous reviews people complaining about service levels. My experience has been pleasant thus far, most probably because the young staff weren't stressed by customers crowding the entrance (management really need to address this). Queuing customers, prams, crying toddlers and constant requests for tables and water make it hard to smile after a long shift.
As for the coffee and pastries- there is a reason this place is still so popular. The pastry selection is surprisingly limited, but high quality. The cakes are equally delicious and creative. I do think better coffee can be had in numerous cafes within a five minute walk, but, well, it's all about the baked goods here, isn't it?
s. w.
Watermelon cake tastes great. I love the rose on it.
T. L.
Unforgettable watermelon cake, absolutely delicious and very enjoyable. Despite the crowd little shop front, the atmosphere is positive and people are generally friendly towards each other while enjoying their cake and coffee.
G. K.
Great coffee. Guys, the real is game is at the Chiffons! You've gotta try them out!!
C. H.
really nice pastries from there. Definitely suggest trying the eclairs and the pies. The sandwiches are a bit expensive but very tasty. There's not a lot of indoor seating, but you can sit outside. Australia Street is quite relaxed and quiet so it's not a problem really. You can also look into the kitchen. Also the Ginger Ninjas are good.
H. S.
They do have just amaaaaaazing cakes
I personally prefer the one with watermelon and strobary.. their coffee is nice and the pistachio with lemon is just yummiiiii
Expensive but tasty
Crowded in most times and busy
I think their cakes are the best in Sydney
It really deserves a visit
S. J.
The cakes are amazing. But the coffee isn't nice, its expensive and not made properly. Our coffee was burnt and size portions were small.
J. P.
coffee and water melon cake is so good.
P. S.
Different cakes. Nice flavours but I think their prices are a bit too high.
G. F.
Oh well the coffe here isn't somthing special, I mean they put a lot of effort in preparing it, but never the less it is quite good. The main reason most people visit this cafe is because of their pastries. Oh the pastries! They really are somthing worth coming all the way here for. A friend of mine, that lives in London even comes here from time to time just for the pastries, thats how good they are. They are always freshly prepared and they add new ones regularly. I definitely recommend trying the watermelon cake and the carrot one. They both taste divine.
L. N.
Every raves on about their Watermelon cake. Yes, it's truly amazing. BUT!!!! Have you tried their pies. It's to die for. Thank you guys :)
N. Q.
Great product - watermelon cake! Pleasant over the phone ordering experience, paid over the phone and quickly in and out to pickup my order. No dramas. No fuss. Highly recommended.
B. H.
The cakes and pastries are pretty good, and you must try the watermelon cake for its uniqueness.
But it's not a staple, just a great place to visit with friends once or twice to try their creations.
A. A.
Worth is,,
So delicious cake 🍰 the have
L. L.
Super lovely taste! Especially the strawberry watermelon cake! So cool of the cake making with the watermelon!
M. H.
Nice coffee and the vibe is great. However, watermelon and strawberries cake is not really my type. Will try something else next time.
J. S. A.
The staff have bad attitudes, but I think they're hired for that.
The food's still good, but it's patchy - some things are excellent, some things are bad. Also, BSP is often plagued by morons with DSLRs taking photos of the strawberry watermelon cake (which might be the most over-photographed dessert in Sydney.)
E. L.
Of course, black star pastry is known for its strawberry watermelon cake - it is so famous this review seems almost unnecessary - the desserts are quite pricey but they are delicious so it is definitely worth it as a treat
L. V.
Line is out the door (of course it is it's a small place!) but they work quickly and the line moves fast. Come for the strawberry & watermelon cake (but if you've been a fan from years ago note they do serve in smaller portions now...)
G. T.
I've now been to 3 of Black Star Pastry locations. I'm not entirely certain which one is my favourite, however, I'm leaning towards this Newtown. I always walk in the door with complicated, multi-tiered, "special instruction", orders and have never experienced anything less than pure joy. Thank you!
L. X.
The watermelon cake sure did not disappoint. I went back to try the other ones but they had some room for improvement: the lychee and raspberry cake would be even better if they just topped with raspberry and get rid of the canned lychee; the yuzu cake is delicious if separated from the black seasame layer (it was overpowering everything else); the green pistachio cake in my opinion is not on the same level as the other ones - it lacks the clean taste and clarity in other ones.
On the savoury side - the croissant is to die for! And the quiche strikes every note right. Nice work!
S. R.
I'm sure everyone else has already said it but the watermelon cake from this place is seriously delicious. One of the best desserts I've had in a long time!
K. H.
Beautiful pastries line the counters, tempting you in for a closer look to aid in your tough decision. The staff is great at helping to narrow down your options by pointing you in the right direction. Great savoury & lunchtime options, as well as a plethora of sweets to waffle over. You will want all of them!
S. H.
As cute as this place is, the service is rubbish. I had to wait 15 for my tea only to be told they had run out of it, then wait another 10 minutes. The pastries look amazing and I will sure try one out next time, but boy hope no one else has to wait this long for their drinks to arrive.
W. F. E.
Black Star Pastry and their famous Strawberry and Watermelon ($7.50) cake made me drool slightly. I was also very tempted to get the Raspberry Creme Brulee Tart (picture above) but instead something else caught my eye.
The Kaylea looked amazing at $7 which was about 20 cms in diameter (pictured above). It's described as Valrhona hazelnut praline with caramelised mousse in a chocolate tart. It was very rich and had lots of crunchy and mousse textures. Delicious!
I could not leave Black Star Pastry without the Strawberry and Water with Rose Scented Cream at $7.50. As I patiently waited in line; I started to wonder what flavours would soon be erupting in my mouth. It was a mush of watermelon which is sweet, cool and mushy. The cake part is spongey, sugary and light.
I also got the very rich dark chocolate pistachio ball. It was a nice change in texture to the Kaylea tart and the Strawberry and Water with Rose Scented Cream cake. Be ready for rich and amazingly sugary surprise.
It's a tiny cafe so I suggest you go take away. Delicious!
J.
Amazing cake, very friendly staff and very cosy place for a coffee
e. A.
Tried the famous strawberry and watermelon cake. Great idea combining cheesy creamy and fresh, soft puffy and crunchy, on a pretty silver seat. With You Yay For It price.
S. P.
Really good pastries here! Friendly staff. They also do really good hot drinks. They do a nice chai. Really cute cups too. Everything's a little expensive, but worth it. There isn't much seating space, but the view across the road is great.
L. H.
In a small little shop Black Star hides beneath the hippiest bits of Newtown you barely know it's there. Selling the most delicious things you ever tasted, little tarts and vegan brownies. It's best to enjoy it in your own home though as there is limited space to sit down.
M. C.
Get the strawberry watermelon cake here. its a really fresh and light cake that is built upon layers of almond dacquoise, fresh whipped cream, watermelon slices, strawberries, and topped generously with Iranian pistachios and rose petals. Superb!
D. T.
The customer service is really really nice!
I called many times to change the pick up time and every time they are very patient and friendly.
The cake is so great and I’ll not get bored even eat this cake million times.
R.
The famous watermelon cake.. It tasted fresh but way too overpriced for the and ingredients you're paying for.
Also when I ordered, the cake got displaced/shifted (seen in photo)
C. M.
Amazing service and amazing cakes! We couldn’t decide which cakes to try so they threw in an extra one for free. Would definitely recommend! 💯
F. H.
The sweets there are fabulous. Try the one with watermelon in it! This is the one I go back for, the flour less orange cake is good too. Tessa is the pastry chef, go when she's on!!
We eat the cakes frequently!!
B.
if I could give them more stars I would . I just love the place to have a good long coffee and their cakes etc are perfect and tasty. I could sit there al;l day and drink and eat until i die. YOU MUST GO THERE AND TRY IT OUT YOURSELF.
J. Z.
You can't miss out this lovely shop that offers strawberry watermelon cakes, top afternoon desert. Bought 5 pieces of them today for my friends. Friendly staff and environment there as well.
C. M. L.
the strawberry watermelon and rose cream cake is the most popular item here! it's an environmentally conscious place. the milk crates outside and deco inside is modern contemporary. perfect for the newtown environment.
L.
Have only ever tried the legendary strawberry watermelon cake from here, every visit the staff are attentive and nice. Would definitely visit for dine in next time to explore the rest of the menu.
T. S.
The cakes here are delicious, the Strawberry Watermelon cake is the best and I don't mind the Pastshio lemon cake as well. Top notch, will eat here again soon.
A. W.
Great friendly staff, excellent desserts, and quick turnover of people. My only side comment is the cake slices individually are overpriced. Better to just buy an actual cake ha
F. L.
strawberry watermelon cake was refreshing & yummy! however, the iced mocha we tried was dissapointing & $8 is quite expensive for the small slice of cake..
R. Y.
Hands down best cakes in Newtown. I loved the strawberry watermelon rosewater cake that I had a whole one for bought for me for my birthday - totally worth the money!
T. G.
Highly recommended to try watermelon crack
H.
Watermelon cake ($36) four portions
R. P.
The Persian fig cake was amazing!
T. G.
This place is famous for it's sweet cakes (watermellon cake anyone) but the true winner here should be the amazing lamb shank pie. This place is usually crowded, mostly with hipsters instagramming their treats. And I'll be one of them. ;)
S. Z.
Great pastries, breads and cakes in a minimalist setting. Not somewhere to linger for hours - small tables and the staff are pretty brusque but no one is here for the service anyway - try the light and summery watermelon cake if you get a chance.
C. W.
With a line constantly out the door, it's a sign of the deliciousness inside that I don't mind spending 10mins on the sidewalk before finally getting inside to select treats. Great coffee, friendly service and a loyal tribe of followers means this is a neighbourhood staple.
M. N.
Great sausage rolls, the herbed mince is shrouded in flaky puff pastry, not soggy or brittle like those often found in convenience stores. The layout of the store is unnecessarily complicated. I was drawn in by the smell of sweet baked goods but I was put off by the sight of two separate counters each with different items that were not labelled. It's as if you are expected to know exactly what you are looking at. To make matters worse when i asked the girl serving what some items were it seems she must have mis-heard me for what's 1+1? The cashier though was very cheerful, I guess they are glad to take your money and see you leave... and not return.
J. C.
My favourite bakery in Sydney, I love their sourdough & fruity bread, vegan goodies, all their cakes, pastries, awesome rolls & sandwiches (mushroom katsu!) and they make the best soy chai lattes in the universe!
C. B.
A lovely single origin espresso. I don't do sweet so have no opinion on the cake or pastry other than that it seems overpriced.
辛.
Strawberry n Watermelon cake taste good.
J. D.
The cake is always recommended, coffee is very average, something seems to be missing to compliment that cake. There is always a line, small and tight so a quick in and out is the way to go
P. F.
Best croissants, cheese sticks and plain white sourdough in Newtown and possibly Sydney (yes, I think the bread is better than Iggy's).
Always long queues because they are so popular. Be patient.
F. F.
I love visiting this place. The coffee great and the staff are friendly. The pastries look delicious and I've tried a few. Good on them for doing vegan and gluten free.
H. W.
I went to this place only twice. once BSP opened their cafe inside Kinokuniya, why bother travelling to small Newtown joint and queue like there's no tomorrow. only 5 mins waiting time in Kinokuniya branch, get your coffee and strawberry watermelon cake in seconds.
c. c.
My partner loves this place. I usually don't eat sweets/cakes but the watermelon cake was nice :) Just feel like over priced for the amount...
e.
love the pistachio cake here so much! watermelon cake is also so good
V. T.
I had strawberry watermelon and lemon pistachio cake
J. A.
Best cake I had in my life. To me it is not disputable.
A.
I mostly love their coffee, haha!
Cakes for insta selfies are always abundant, so seating hard to come by....
They are nice pastries though...
p. s.
Hire staff that are both component and efficient at their jobs (the laissez-faire hipster attitude gets real old, real quick). The experience tarnishes your otherwise good to great food.
C. P.
I love their watermelon cake and lamb shank pie. They also have really nice plates and great coffee. I love their starburst clock and decor. My fav bakery in Sydney.
H. H.
If you can stand the crowds of tourists lining up for the over rated (but very pretty) watermelon and strawberry cake then a coffee and their boozy almond twist will not leave you disappointed - both are devine!
C. S.
amazing coffee every. single. time. the lemon myrtle chiffon is the stuff of dreams. the pies! and pain au chocolat! easily in my top 5 places to eat
D. C.
The famous watermelon and strawberry cake is awesome! Make sure you get a fresh batch to understand what the rave is about.
T. S.
The lady that surved me was amazing I think her name was Jo, love the cakes and coffee was on par
A. S. (.
The star of their menu has to be the watermelon cake. It is worth it! Probably the more refreshing cake you can have in the humid, hot Australian summer :)
J. L.
Good for birthday cake and desert
All of my friends were happy when I presented the watermelon cake
I also loved other deserts at here
L. Y.
AWESOME PASTRY!!!Not only strawberry and watermelon cake is good, all the food here is with quite good quality. A bit pricey recently but still good.
J. D.
Excellent pies and cakes. They even do great coffee too! A little overpriced but it's quite the institution now. Glad to see their success.
H. W.
Signature watermelon cake is so delicious. It always runs out because it's popular!!
S. B.
The recent expansion is so much better, lines aren't as long and there are actually places to sit and enjoy the amazing cakes and pastries. Coffee is so good!
E. M. W.
Small and cramped with long lines, but is worth the wait! Get their signature Strawberry, Watermelon and Rose Cream Cake which tends to sell out quickly
Y. P.
Loved the watermelon cake for my son's birthday. Everyone loved it too
A. B.
The most refreshing cake I have ever eaten.
D. T.
The watermelon slices are such a nice treat with different textures working so well together. The atmosphere is relaxing and laid-back.
B. Z.
The cake was like heaven. I am so regret I just discovered this shop. The only drawback is the limited space to sit in the store. Wish they would have more and bigger stores coming at some other places in Sydney.
R. H.
I've been a long time fan, and had decided to try the new lychee cake. unfortunately not a huge fan of rocky road and it was also a tad too sweet. everything else here was so good though ;)
T. W.
The coffee is terrible, among the worst I've had. But the pastries are amazing. Absolutely first rate. Be prepared for a huge wait on the weekends though.
J. W.
Great watermelon cake, full of rose favor!
M. C.
The watermelon and strawberry cake is a standout. The poor service and lack of organisation at this location unfortunately puts a damper on our visit.
J.
Not bad but no really my style of taste.
L. Z.
The shop is quite small, but the pastry is definitely amazing. The strawberry and watermelon cake there is definitely worth trying.
R. v. V.
The watermelon cake is superb. The lemon myrtle chiffon cake is very nice too.
A. J.
The pastries are amazing. Be prepared for a queue. They've recently taken the space next door for more seating however the queue is always long.
I. A.
Cool little and lovely place with really nice sweet pastry
F. A.
Worth waiting for the Strawberry Watermelon Cake thou its a little bit expensive. Staffs are okay consider the shop is always full of customers.
F. S.
Not much of a fan of this kinda cake in generalbut I would always try have cake from this shop for my birthday if possible. 🎂🎈🤣
M. F.
Loved their watermelon cake. However it is very very busy so i would recommend to do take away.
J. S.
Delicious strawberry and watermelon cake... You must try a slice! 🍓 🍉 🍰
E.
One of the best dessert place to go in Sydney. Their desserts arent cheap but worth coming back. Place is rather small.
R. M.
Way too much food, this place is leading the charge making the best pies in Australia! Lamb Shank is the only two words you need to know
Plus the coffee is good too
P. D.
Their signature watermelon cake is where it’s at! A must try! Decent coffee.
D. C.
Food were great they have magnetite pizza fresh from the oven that is simple but really good. Service was great and the staff were nice too.
炭.
The space is narrow, but cake is good
E. N. W.
You should try the Strawberry Watermelon cake 👍
H. A.
I ordered a delicious cake for my wifes Bday, Adrian really looked after me. Great service and great cake. I will be going here again for sure
j. p.
Got the strawberry watermelon cake for a birthday last week and it’s amazing and fresh as always.
P. W.
Yes the bread is amazing as are all the baked goods. The coffee is so-so. The staff are totally rude - probably the rudest cafe staff in Newtown.
T. O.
Best croissants i ever tasted, strawberry watermelon cheese cake is the best to try
J. S.
Have been here before so i know that this place is nice and the staff are great but in the mornings it is full of police. I left empty handed as being surrounded by serial abusers is not a pleasant experience.
H. N.
They were at Wandering Cooks in Brisbane for 2 weeks and I ordered the watermelon cake. Please open a permanent store in Brisbane.
A. R.
the watermelon cake looks cute but taste normal, staff there are friendly
I. C.
Best pies around paired with uniquely delicious desserts - only limited by the lack of seating... you can always sit a few steps away at the square.
C. L.
It's a must eat dessert when I travel to Sydney. I will buy a watermelon cake and lychee cake every single time when I am there.
E. L.
The strawberry and watermelon cake – with layers of biscuit, fruit, cream and jelly – is absolutely divine.
F. O.
Fantastic Watermelon Strawberry cake with a layer of watermelon slice works really well. Coffee is good.
M. Š.
Lovely cakes. There is always a line, so be prepared to wait around 15 min, but the cakes are really good.
C. J.
Cappuccino and lovely cakes. Great sandwiches too. Make a stop incredible strawberries and watermelon cake.
A.
Awesome cakes and super friendly staff - you have to try them, any of their cakes, they’re amazeballs.....
N. E.

R. L.
Best SWC in Queensland
R. A.
Yummiest cakes and perfect delivery from folks at blackstar pastry.
B. W.
The pies really are very good, but the service is occasionally patchy and it's very crowded as it is so small. You are better off going to the larger cafe in Alexandria.
S. P.
this is the place to be for a great satureday / sunday relaxation. have to try the lamb shank pie which does not come out often and of course not to mention the great watermelon cake...!!!!
N. B.
Small cozy cafe that sell the best watermelon cake in town.
The coffee is great
M. G.
Go here, eat amazing cakes, then you can die happy. Only four stars because poor seating and hard to park.
H. B.
Quick service. Very tasty sweets. It's a excellent value for money. An ideal hand gift.
C. S.
Delicious food and drinks. Lovely staff and outstanding customer service. Highly recommend.
Y. M.
The watermelon cake is of course a must. Especially happy because they have gluten free cakes!
J. X.
Great cakes and desserts!
K.
Good coffee, nice variety of pastries and good spot off the main road. But limited seating and no wifi.
C. a. M.
The watermelon strawberry cake was nice but try something else from their menu as well.
K. E.
love the strawberry cake so much, but i dont like to go to this place anymore, the coffee girls very rude! I was so disappointed with the service!
M. W.
Tried the caramel tart. Delicious! Kind of a cross between high end pastry and home style cooking. Definitely awesome
C. M.
I would come here to buy watercake for birthday events. It the best excuse I can use to come all the way to Newtown.
L. E.
The watermelon cake was nice, and very aesthetic but I think a little overrated.
Z. B.
Most people seem to be into the sweet stuff here but the savory pies are hands-down the best thing in the store. Consistently excellent food.
M. J.
Guy at counter was very rude which is why ive given 3 stars. Bad attitude. When i ordered he misheard and thought i was asking and said "it's right in front of you". Ah yeah i know.
E. L.
Gotta try the special cake strawberry one. The one star deduction is given to the room is too narrow and barely can sit there to eat.
N. D.
The best cakes i have had in Sydney! Incredible - thanks from me and my little tummy :-)
J. A.
great pies! watermelon cake which is to die for and a must try! A bit hard to find the place but its worth trying!
A. S.
Great cakes and ok coffee if you can get served and if they have any left by the time you get to the front of the line
N. K.
Watermelon cake is to die for! Long queue on Saturdays, be prepared but worth the wait!
H.
overpriced pies but definitely worth going for the delicious pastries, i do not reccomend you eat in because it is very crowded usually, take away is the way to go
G. M.
watermelon cake is soo amazing light and unique flavour
D. R.
If you like stuff (and things) then this is your kind of place. Black star has a heap of different stuffs (and thing) that make a good mouth feel. I'm lovin' it
Z.
Strawberry watermelon cake as tasty and as refreshing as the first time I had it.
Y. L.
Best cake ever. You must try when you visit Sydney.
T. L.
Why this place has been so popular we will never know. All things reasonably considered, comparably the quality of the food just isn't really that good and certainly not for what they are asking.
M. H.
The strawberry watermelon cake is so refreshing, look forward to trying the other cakes!
R. C.
Nice coffee and some amazing chocolate cake! Busy place but has a good amount of seating
Z. N.
Watermelon cake is nice. Pies are overpriced and a bit dry without sauce.
B.
Purchased the infamous watermelon cake for my birthday, so delicious!
S. L.
Great place for coffee and pastries.
But the price is on the high side.
J. N. T.
Nice coffee and cakes shop. I love their signature water melon cake.
G. A.
Watermelon cake. That's all anyone wants to hear about. It's as good as they say it is. My preference for a refreshing snack.
B. D.
Great sweets. Not so great lines. Get in early and nab a piece of the watermelon cake. It goes lightning fast.
L. f. W.
Decent stuff but really, really overcrowded since the place got famous in China. They'll need about 15 more branches to cope with the traffic.
陳.
Really delicious. It must eat in Sydney.
H. T.
Amazing bakery with some fantastic items such as their watermelon cake, absolutely divine.
E. S.
best place for coffee and cake. Watermelon cake is very delicious

Beautiful and delicious cakes, however I feel like they are overpriced.
S. H.
Small cafe with good coffee and cakes. Love their watermelon cake.
F. K.
I love the Strawberry and Watermelon cake & Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake.
S. Z.
Amazing cake. It’s slightly small, though, the flavor is beyond my imagination.
K. M.
Strawberry and Watermelon cake was delicious. Bit pricey
S. B.
Good coffee and desserts, but a little expensive. Parking is limited if coming by car, as is seating in the cafe.
S.
Iced coffee and watermelon cake were nice. But it's overhyped and overpriced
D. N.
Gotta try the watermelon cake. There is always a lineup here but the food is worth the wait.
C. P. A.
Why did I have only 4 stars on Black Star? The sausage rolls get 5 stars all on their own!
F. R.
Ahh mannnn! You gotta try strawberry and watermelon cake. The best flavour explosion in your mouth
D. K.
Cake is special and amazing, but attitude in attending to customers is not good enough.
B. B.
Delectable cakes and pastries and great coffee to go with it.
F. S.
It's an amazing place but the cakes could be a little bit better Tbh.
R. T.
Absolute Best Coffee in Newtown. And there are some great coffee places in Newtown!
D. D.
No place to sit and often crowded, but a great place for take away coffee and cake.
F. R.
Make sure you try their watermelon cake, simply delicious!
