It's my favorite cafe in the city, nice food and great location, can bring a book and sit here the whole afternoon
S. N. K.
Located right opposite to the Hyde Park Barracks’s, this cafe is a hidden gem. The reason why I said it’s a hidden gem because one of my friend and I were here other day and we never noticed a cafe. Couple of days later, another friend of mine took me here for breakfast. The staff is absolutely courteous and more French. They have a tiny take away counter at the entrance and a large seating area on the left side of the church.
I loved the way they provide a shots glass full of sparking water along with coffee. This actually helps you gulp down any of the coffee taste before you taste their delicious food. I have tried my first French Galette and I am glad it is one of my favourites. I have tried both Salmon and Bacon Galettes. Though their almond croissant is small, it had this rich nutty taste and delicious filling. Would love to visit again.

Wow, what a gem. Fabulous in every way, particularly delightful staff. We'll be back. A little piece of Paris in the historical centre of Sydney. Bon appétit.

First time to visit the place. Quite nice and quiet. Good service and food.

Perfectly placed oasis hidden under Saint James Anglican Church under the bustling sidewalks of Macquarie and Philip streets!! Lovely coffee scrummy food, beautiful friendly fast service in an unique environment with plastered arched rooves and sandstone walls.
Unfortinately the clean but old toilets are downstairs and hard to navigate (even for for the able bodied) simply due to the age of the building and there's even a lovely prayer chapel where you can light a candle end sit amongst the remains of those long departed and send up a prayer or 2.
Comfy padded pews and chairs, Pod to mine town one on a 1/2 made our social distance but you can always move to the next alcove it's worth it just to come down just for the food and ambience!! Don't stride past...drop in and have a coffee at list up top to keep these guys afloat during Covid!!

My new favourite cafe in this part of Sydney. Great food, delivered quickly and efficiently by friendly and knowledgeable staff. The setting is fantastic with plenty of space between tables and the alcoves (crypts) help manage the noise. The lunch menu offered a variety of light and more substantial meals, supported by an excellent blackboard menu. Value for money was great and we never felt rushed (or neglected).

Perfect location, great coffee, food and service.

Great meal and coffee. And the ambience...wow. Under a church. It's genuinely a very, very unique, different place. Unlike any I've ever been to.

I went here for breakfast and absolutely love this place! Their smoked salmon galette is amazing and very filling. Will definitely go back again!

I love getting a coffee from this place. It always makes me feel like I'm in France or something for about 2 minutes. The coffee is fantastic and the service is very friendly.

Always a great experience... very friendly staff & consistent delicious food. Also a beautiful atmosphere in the courtyard

This little French Cafe is located in the historic St. James Church (how cool), and offers a takeaway coffee kiosk (best flat white in Sydney), and a nice garden patio if you choose to dine. I tried their new bottomless Mimosa's offer (a must try), and I had the pulled pork galette which I also never had before. It was fantastic. Perry (the owner), and his staff were great. Service was friendly, fast, and efficient. Will definitely be back.

Hands down the best coffee I've had in Sydney. The food here was delicious. The service excellent (efficient, attentive, charming). And it's a pretty cool setting... In the crypt of a church.
There are spaces to eat inside or outside, or just grab a coffee and a pastry from the coffee cart at the entrance.

Enthusiastic, hospitality-focused French outfit that had a good vibe, very popular for takeout coffee. The coffee was definitely the star, as the Croque Monseiur was a bit flat - not enough bechamel in my view - and although prompt arrived lukewarm. The pastry to follow absolved this sin however, as it was divine! I'd frequent again if in the area and choose something different off the menu.

A great way to start the day with a crepe and coffee. The service is friendly and brisk. Well worth a visit. Take the time to enjoy the atmosphere downstairs or outside in the courtyard.

Never had gallette before. Great discovery in a not so obvious dining location in the city.

Recommended to go here for breakfast by the hotel we were staying at (included 10% off) and was pleasantly surprised by the staff and food/coffee. Good range of breakfast food options and great coffee.
A little cool in winter inside (note low ceilings!) however the attentive staff were giving rugs to some of the ladies.
There is outdoor seating as well which would have been nice for a bit later in the morning with the sunlight hitting.

I had no idea there was a cafe under the church! Found out when I attended a one off performance in French in the covered courtyard. The play was odd but interesting and thankfully short. Anyway the canapes and drinks were delicious, so we had a good time and a giggle afterwards.
Must go try the cafe one lunchtime as it is a gem of a retreat in a busy precinct.

Always friendly service by these Frenchies (better than in France that's for sure) and nice to sit outside round the side when it's not cold. Also nice atmosphere inside. Happy hour coffee 2:30-3:30 is a winner. Pastries very tempting, some nice teas, and they have Orangina!

Nice coffee but... they don’t fill your keep cup properly and will leave your order to after (in my case) 8 other orders coz ‘they’re long blacks’ so not sure why I have to wait just to make your life easier. And then no apology for delay just ‘yours is coming up’. Customer service =0

Fantastic service, funky location (in a good way), and most importantly - the food is delicious! They have some of the best roast potatoes I've ever had.
J. S.
Had a lovely breakfast, a perfectly cooked omelette this morning at Jardin St James really cool vibes in the Crypt and excellent attentive service highly recommend

Julien and his amazing staff are beyond comparison in the sometimes unpredictable Sydney Cafe culture. A truly special experience at every visit. A little bit of fine French hospitality in a very English historical setting. (by Andrew)

Love this place. Great service, great food and a super locaion under the church, in front of or in the lovely outside dining area. Did I add the lovely friendly staff, no! Well I have now.
S. P.
Great coffee, staff always have a smile and a great attitude (even when it's raining). Coffee stand is located outside, bring an umbrella if it's raining; but there is covered area down the stairs.
B. C.
Went there for a function. The indoor/ outdoor space was pleasant. Food was plentiful but nothing special. Drinks were free flowing and cool.

nice relaxed outdoor setting and friendly service (altho a tad slow). menu is rather limited for lunch, but pricing is ok, and the mussels and platter we had were nice.
L. W.
I really liked the lunch menu, food was nice. Dined inside which was nice being in an old church. Rather good coffee out front too.
S. M.
Great coffee and service. Nice viennoiseries and cool spot by the courts. Can get busy but service is quick and professional.

Cute little cafe with really nice pastries. There is an outdoor seated area where you can have a cup of coffee in the sun.

Attentive staff and heavenly galette, pretty setting.

Wow - premium charges for grilled cheese and toast- location predator in my view
