Comments of Marlowe's Way

Definitely the place you want to go if you want to sip coffee with the locals. This hidden gem in downtown Sydney served the best lattes we tried on our trip. The music, s artwork and pictures added to ambiance as did the great customer service. The ham, egg and cheese toastie was delicious, and the Handsome Devil's hotsauce complimented it well.

A great cool cafe in Sydney CBD. Tucked away in a laneway (Tank Stream Way) off Bridge Street bringing life and energy to the area. Marty, the owner, brings atmosphere to this laneway with terrific music and energetic staff. The coffee and food is always great.
I encourage everyone to frequent this great little cafe. I have
visited this cafe during lockdown and Marty has continued to give his all every day even during the hardest of lockdown days. He deserves great success.

Excellent coffee, friendly service, nice range of pastries and snacks. Probably can turn the music down a notch so early in the morning.

A chill way to spend a Thursday night. Wasn't very busy but I didn't mind - staff pay attention to your needs. Loved the fact they have a DJ who looks happy to be there, flexibility with what pizzas they offer, and a nice pinot at a fair price. My friend was here just yesterday and they remembered his name. A nice touch.

Tucked down a cute little laneway off busy Bridge Street in the city lives this tiny gem. It's small but eclectic, and what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in substance 'n' style.
I've been here twice in the last 3 weeks and they generally have a couple of specials available in addition to the regular menu. They craftily cater for both herbivore and omnivore by creating dishes that can exist solely as a vegetarian meal or the option to have a protein paired with them.
Today I opted for the cous cous salad special, adding chicken. The salad consisted of roast pumpkin, chick pea, snow pea, coriander, raisins, cherry tomato and almonds. The balance of flavours was delightful and contrasted beautifully with the light, fluffy and slightly buttery goodness of the cous cous and the charred chicken.
The serving was generous and satisfied my hunger. It was also quite well priced for a niche city venue. For the drinkers there also appeared to be a few tap beers to choose from. I noticed Coopers Pale Ale, and Young Henry's cider. There may have been more tap beers on the other side of the service area.
What I hadn't noticed on my first visit was that the music filtering through the cafe is played on a record player. As in vinyl. As in awesome. The soft sounds of slow soulful r 'n' b and jazzy notes drift and delight as you enjoy your meal.
There really is only one drawback, and it's bound to happen when you're so cool. The place is busy, meaning that you might not get a table. The cafe does do takeaway meals, but the real charm of the place is eating-in. I missed out earlier in the week and was disappointed. The downside to being great, won't hold that against them.
Will eat here again, and often.

Such a wonderful little cafe with family-run charm and great service. The coffee is always great and I recommend one of the little Brioche's with your drink. Marty is an expert of great music and runs two vinyl players. Great vibes in jazz, blues, RnB, and funk will greet you on entering. The service is swift and friendly - hence the high popularity of this great coffee place. Good for pre-dinner drinks or a casual dinner itself. First class.

Marlowe's Way is the right way. Tucked away in an alley.
I'm trying to make Yelp a thing here in AU, it's not used very much here but I was lucky enough to find this place. I was looking for a coffee/breako spot, and this popped up. Love the chill vibes and the staff are on top of it. Such excellent service and extremely kind. This place is pretty small but perfect for a pair or solo. Most people are ordering take away before work. The line get's pretty long but goes by quickly.
The coffee is great and the food is phenomenal. Love the decor and ambiance. The whole place just has it goin on!
I got the avocado toast with a soft boiled egg on top with a cappuccino. The meal was the perfect way to start a day. Delicious and reasonably priced, Sydney isn't a cheap place to eat.
We also ordered the omelette that was cooked to perfection. Sometimes omelettes can be to "eggy" if that's a thing lol but this has a perfect balance of everything. To forgot to put some of the delish hot sauce on top!
I'd go again to listen to the chill music, sip on some delicious coffee, and have some tasty eats.

Great music and best oat caps in the CBD. Thank you for helping me get through working in the city during this lockdown
J. G.
Best coffee in the Wynyard/CQ area. Brew is perfect for a morning/wake up coffee. Just enough flavour to taste it but not be an over the top experience.
P. B.
Carefully selected music playlist, high chairs at the bar and creamy long black were a perfect combination for my afternoon visit here. Would love to come back again.
J. W.
Great coffee place. Not much space to sit down so I usually get takeaway. They should introduce the loyalty card program back and I will go back more often
C. C.
Best coffee in the CBD!! The staff here are amazing and all the food is homemade and delicious. The cakes/pastries change daily as they're made fresh and are so so so delicious. Can't recommend them enough!

The Tank stream just below - colony of sydney's first fresh water source for a few decades - Eora peoples water source for hundreds of generations too :)
D. N.
Great atmosphere and such a cool little spot in the city. I would say it's a locals hang for coffee. Definitely a good place to have a break after walking around that area. Friendly staff an excellent coffee, the cold press is quite good. I wouldn't post up with a laptop and take up precious seat space, it's small and social.
R. N.
Not a coffee drinker but this seems to be a hot place for take away for said drink. Location is great. I visited four days in a row for breakfast and it didn't disappoint. Quick service.
j. m.
Best coffee in Sydney - and great music too. My fave coffee shop in Australia - comfortable, not too busy and with a great atmosphere. And where else in the city can you pick up a coooool vinyl album or two and listen to some great sounds while supping on a well made brew. Good food too, and they crack open a keg or two Thursdays and Fridays. Excellent. Not trendy, not pretentious, just good.
M. P.
Far and away the best coffee in Sydney. No competition! I tried as many cafes as I could whilst in Sydney, and this is easily the best. Not as bitter as most of the other cafes, served nice and hot, even my toddler's babycino was better than the other cafes. Super friendly staff, excellent background music.
J. I.
This little place is home away from home for us Melbournians.
Cool vibe, warm atmosphere, very unlike Sydney. 👍🏻👍🏻
G. S.
You'll have to look carefully for this hole in the wall. Very trendy feel with great coffee. If you're a tourist, take a quick stop by here. It's situated right above the old Tank Stream, which was the original fresh water stream that supplied the first English colony.
S. B.
Coffee is one of the best in Sydney. They are very particular about their beans. Pastry is also looking good. Overall, it's one of my favourite spots for good coffee and I am very difficult to please.
A. B.
A little tucked away, but worth the wander down the alley. Coffee is good, staff are friendly, but best of all, they spin a lot of funk and soul on their little turntable behind the bar. If you are after a quick feed they have a nice selection of quick eats, but it is quite small, so getting a table can be tricky.
K. C.
One of the best coffees in the area. Match that to delicious food options with a soundtrack from the record player and you're onto a winner.
Space is limited but you are free to stand around outside enjoying your coffee.
T. C.
Came for a great coffee and was not disappointed. The vinyl music and food offerings were a good match. You can forget you are in the middle of a large city while enjoying time out with a delicious freshly roasted coffee. Find it in a laneway off Bridge Street.
b. o.
Cool little cafe in a small little alley that plays tunes from a large record collection. They also have records up on the walls as art.
Does a great long black.
Also serves beer and nibbles and has a dj playing an excellent range of music on a Friday night.
R. L.
Good:
-Coffee (though a little weak)
-Limited food menu
-Trendy setup and atmosphere (if you're into that).
Bad:
-Service is pretty terrible. A lot of attitude from some of the staff, like they are doing you a favour by serving you.
-Bass-heavy sound system ruins any good tunes they play and makes being in the for more than 5 minutes a bit of a pain.
In short, it would be 5 stars if some of the staff acted a bit less "cool" and focused on delivering polite, efficient service.
M. H.
The coffee is great, but I particularly like Marlowe's for a drink. They've recently extended the hours and started serving alcohol.
When you order a drink they'll give you some free nibbles including cold cuts and olives. But try to the cheese / meats board, it's delicious and very satisfying.
The atmosphere is great because of the artwork on the walls and the staff are totally friendly. They'll strike up a conversation with you and they'll split your tab up if you want to.
Just be aware you can't stand and drink outside on the path because of council rules, but I think they're working on that and sprucing up the alley.
B. U.
Great spot for a drink at Happy Hour or a quick bite. Small, but cosy atmosphere with great tunes always on. Staff will look after you and always make you feel welcome
C. K.
Asked for almond milk but was told they only use macadamia milk as it doesn't split and produces a creamier result. I happily obliged and I'm glad I did - such a great coffee! I like that they take pride in their coffee and only use products that produce a good result - really impressed. Only let down... the barista called out my coffee order rather than my (long/disyllabic) name despite calling out everyone else's name before me... petty I know, but it's the little things I guess! Despite this, will definitely be back for another macadamia f/w and maybe to try their food!
K.
Good coffee and friendly service in a small cosy setting.

Coffee: Marlowe's Way (Roasted by The Little Marionette)
Passion: 9/10
Crema: 10/10
Um...... OMFG.... This espresso is so delicious! After a conversation this morning at #coffeemornings I heard that in the location that used to house my favourite Malaysian laksa, is now a cafe that, according to this guy, made the best espresso he had ever had.... ever. I can certainly see where he is coming from.
I was a bit disappointed that today they didn't have any single origin coffees available today, but when the barista looked at my somewhat coffee inspired shirt, back up at me and said "short black....?"... I knew I was in safe hands.
As for the coffee, imagine honey caramel, warm, mellow and smooth... all the way down... and somehow has left me salivating, you'd be close. The espresso was good enough that I ordered another just to be sure.
As for the atmosphere, love what they've done with the space. It is the alley cafe Sydney has been missing. Service was also awesome so, one the whole, not sure if there is a bad thing to say about them.
N.B.
No #powerwhoring available
No public WiFi available
S. S.
Great little place that's always got a line for coffee. The staff are friendly and relaxed.. the food is great and the coffee is awesome.. nothing much else you can ask for..
A. L.
Sydney's best coffee, without doubt, hesitation or exception. I make wine for a living and can tell you this place is amazing.
V. C.
Pretty good coffee, but a little light for me. Great little cafe but was packed mid morning on a Friday. Definitely on my list.
M. D.
Good coffee and breakfast options but the bland laneway location lacks character and there isn't a lot of space if you want to sit down and eat. Good for grabbing a takeaway coffee on the run.
M. V.
I reckon this is best coffee in the CBD. Food always reliable and geat for a low-key cafe lunch. Recommend the slow cooked beef and kimchi sambo. Music also on-point
S. W.
Excellent coffee, great ambience. Popular with office workers so busy on the morning coffee run between 10 and 11.
S. T.
Fantastic coffee, service, location and atmosphere. Killer tunes. Love this little hidey-hole in the belly of the city.
S. C.
The best coffee in the CBD, the best beats in Australia. Amazing food options, excellent, friendly staff. Booze too!
A. B.
probably marginally the best coffee in the cbd and thats quite a call I know, but consistently excellent, plus it is a unique gem in terms of food and service. Certainly a place that sets the bar.
H. W.
Great atmosphere. Really cosy and full of character. Perfect for dates or small groups.
Try their single origin espresso.
P. D.
With a great selection of coffee and also upbeat records playing, it's a great spot to take a break and unwind. Also try the homemade chai, subtly spicy, fine black tea
M. C.
The smell of Italian food cooking on the stove hits your nostrils before you even step into this place.
This hole in the wall run by a bunch of tattooed muscled men goes against the current hipster trend but I don't care because the food they serve here deserves a standing O.
Tasteless, stock standard meals are served at 99% of the food joints in the CBD at lunch time but Marlowe's Way helps me believe that lunch, even on a week day, can be savoured and not devoured.
This is how I want to eat every single day.
P. L.
Love this little (literally) hole in the wall. Small fresh and interesting sandwich offering with Young Henry's beer on Tap. Great coffee and good music vibe
C. W.
