F. S.The room was fine, everything was very clean. Only cons were the AC wasn't working and it was very hot and some smoke came in my room from downstairs at night. 30/45 mins to the CBD.
S. R.There was an issue w my Agoda booking. Though they assured me a place to stay for the day and will be charged for the coming nights if the booking doesn't go through. The Agoda booking issue was not solved until the next day and I had to do many calls w Agoda. It just bumped my trip out. I feel the hostel end could also be more proactive in trying to engage with their agent or Agoda directly.
Other than this, room is okay. Sound of vehicles passing by is quite loud. Cleanliness of the room can be improved.

S. C.Not too busy during Covid (obvs) but always clean, they got new bunks that don't squeak and comfy foam mattresses. Staff are always running about helping with whatever people need, and they keep the weirdos away.
D. M.Stayed here for 14 nights in December. The staff are all very lovely and lots of fun. There wasn’t a night where people weren’t ready to party. Rooms were clean and decently comfy. Stayed in a 6 person dorm and never felt like my items were unsafe or it was too crowded. Only negatives about my stay was the constant noise. The Redeye bar had an event literally every night of the week, and the music can get very very loud, from about 10 PM - 2 AM. Even with earplugs in and the fan on, you can hear the bass and the DJ. Great if you’re down there enjoying it, not so great if you want a good sleep. Another downside was the daily “cleaning” of the rooms. It’s hostel policy for the rooms and bathrooms to be cleaned daily, but it was unnecessary. The staff would barge in at 10 AM everyday, talking and singing, throw the blinds open and the lights on, and proceed to do a terrible job vacuuming and throw away items we were still using. Then someone would come in and do the same to the bathroom, but you could never tell it was cleaned. Besides the noise and the cleaning staff, I recommend Base for any party loving backpackers. Not recommended for children and quiet families.
R. G.Brilliant party hostel thats normally fully booked. We stayed one night here on a Saturday, and we re quickly wrapped up into their events and ping pong. The bar is fairly cheap and the location is not that bad either. Far from the CBD however but close to the beach. Beds were fairly clean and room size was good.
L. J.Base is an awesome hostel, loads of friendly faces and great stories. If you’re worried about starting your travels definitely come here and talk to Angela. She was extremely helpful in booking our trip and was able to find us a room on short notice!
J. A.Not a bad hostel as they come, the bar and restaurant was awesome, and location was amazing in St. Kilda, with an easy bus from Melbourne Airport (which stops literally at the door).
Sadly the people in the room we were in were really messy, and as a result the room was an absolute pigsty. (Not the Hostels fault though, just wish maybe they were a bit more like “sort your stuff out”).
Bathrooms were okay - again not very clean, but good for a few nights stay.

Very good kitchen and yum affordable food in the restaurant if you aren’t in the mood to cook. Isaac, Simon and Alison made are stay particularly special. Can’t wait to come back.
T. G.I loved my time at base st Kilda. The staff were so fun and friendly. There are themed activities every night in the bar below the dorms. Bingo on a Monday is wild! The rooms are cleaned every morning and the guests are international and friendly. It's super easy to get to, with 3 tram stops close by. It's a couple walk minutes from the beach. It's a heap of fun a bit of a party hostel but if you want to chill that's possible to.

J. J.Good hostel in quite a good location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Luckily we hot a free Upgrade to a private room, so I can't say anything about the dorms but our private room on the second floor was alright ans a lot quieter than anything on the first floor due to the increased distance to the bar, which is nice too albeit a bit expensive outside of happy hours. Would definitely recommend but do keep in mind that it can get a bit noisy on the first floor.

R. Z.Base is a vibrant and inviting hostel! I lived there for a month and it was the most fun month of my life. All the staff and guests are super duper friendly and I always had something exciting to do. The travel guru, Simon, was very knowledgable and I'd defo recommend paying him a visit while you are here - I can't thank him enough for how much he saved me with all of his little tips. DEFINITELY recommend this hostel to any solo travellers to make friends. Benson OUT!
J. S.Really nice place, even for one night. Staff were great on check in and with any questions you may have. Private rooms was very lovely and clean and the balcony was a nice touch to have. Only one issue and that’s the terrible noise that goes off in the walls every 10mins, not sure if that’s the elevator or the pipes but it made falling asleep difficult.

- Was on the top floor so can't say much about how loud the music would be from the bar for lower rooms, it personally wasn't an issue where I was.
C. B.Great hostel, fantastic atmosphere if you like a bit of a party as there is a very lively bar on site the noise of which cannot be heard from the dorms though. The beds are confortable, the staff is awesome, especially Emma. They do pancakes for breakfast and have loads of activities and specials every day of the week
E. T.As good as expected. Base is a very good hostel. There are events every night but we couldn't hear it to our rooms (2nd floor) so it didn't disturb us. Only thing we didn't like, was kitchen. Only because it was always so dirty and awful and I know that's rather other guests fault who just don't clean after themselves, but hostel could try to do something about it. All and all, it was a good backpacker experience! :))
P. E. M.Best hostel where I've ever stayed in Melbourne! Great staff, very friendly. So many activities to do with other backpackers. A club at the ground floor, where smoking and drinking, with a biliardo table. Rooms very clean, bath inside each room. Very friendly people who talk with and go outside. Air conditioner in each rooms. A smoking room at ground floor. It costs the double of the cheapest hostels, but it's really worth it. Recommended for all backpackers looking for cleanliness, relaxation and new friendships!
J. W.Good and clean hostel. The kitchen is always messy and there isn't much kitchenware to use, the events are okay, quite fun if you're drunk. Better come here in summer. The location is perfect, it's near the beach and you have enough places to go grocery shopping, but it's not that far from CBD.

Simon helped plan and book our last minute trip to the east coast and because hes done a similar trip was able to show us the best places to visit and stay and so far its been amazing

R. F. N.The staff is kind gentle and available. The place offers parties almost every night where is very easy to meet people. At the same time, some of these parties go on until early in the morning and you can hear a bit of noise from the rooms. Also, there is a stink of feet all over the place. Some roommates are rude and noisy even during the early morning. The staff has nothing to do with these people, but for sure they can find a solution to prevent them to annoy other guests

L. B.I have never stayed in a hostel before however some friends suggested I come here to meet people, after staying in Airbnb’s made me a loaner. On the first night of playing boozy bingo, I won a free week stay and as a result I also made a lot of really cool new friends. Boozy bingo is on Mondays which is good and bad because it can get kind of nuts... I don’t recommend having to work the next day. this place also has regular events like drag competitions and trivia. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking to meet new people in Saint Kilda and like to party.

J. W.Great bar, but room (8 bed dorm) was run down with grotty bathroom. Card system was unreliable, meaning we had to climb 3 flights of stairs instead of using lift. Repeated issues with entering our rooms as well. Needs sorting out.
No ovens in communal kitchen.
Location was OK. Close to tram. Overall fine if you want to party and don't care about much else.

M. A.Private ensuite rooms are real nice. Shower was fantastic. Great location in St Kilda. Super close to public transit. 20 minutes tram from downtown. They have a really nice card less key entry into rooms and the hostel.

The best part though was that Isaac guy. He is such a genuine nice host who really wanted me to have the most amazing time. On top of that he was fit as f.
Would definitely recommend everyone stay here. My one regret was I wish I spent more time with the manager. He’s sound.

Since the day when we checked in, the staff didn’t inform us the check out time is 10am, we therefore thought maybe we can check out around 11-12, and the next day the house keeping open our room directly without any calling warning in advance. We stayed in a private room.

C. D.Really easy to meet people and the room aren't too bad, just cold when the heating doesn't work. The bar downstairs has some really good night but that means there is a ban on alcohol anywhere else in the hostel.
Some of the staff are really nice (Chuck on the desk, and the travel and work girls) but a lot are very cliquey. Some just seem to hate that they're working and can be rude with other guests.
The fluctuation in rates is ridiculous, means its impossible to budget and you never know what your going to be paying. This needs sorting! Especially as if you book in advance (even just booking a whole week instead of a couple of nights) you could end up being miles out of pocket, as they hostel will put rates up based on expected capacity only to lower them when that isn't the case.
I. P.I am not a backpacker. My husband and i stayed the night in a private queen room. It was clean, had a balcony and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Its in a perfect location near the Paladin Theatre n shopping. I will stay there again. For only $99 a night with no room deposit required, why would you go anywhere else. The only reason i didnt give a 5, was there is no mini fridge.
T. W.oh my goodness I stayed for the first time the other day......... LOVED IT!!!!!!! The bar wasn't too noisy and crowded but rowdy enough to have a good time. Drinks were well priced and I love the different offer they have on everyday. Totally staying there for my birthday in the city X3

E.The location is excellent in St Kilda. It is right where all the restaurants are and about a 3 min walk to the beach and theme park.
However I did not enjoy my stay (as a solo traveler). I felt it was more of a long term cheap accommodation than a hostel. There was no vibe, even if they had daily events and a bar.
The rooms were a complete mess. I was in a 6 bed dorm and people had been living there for months. The floor was covered with their things and they took over the room as theirs.
I changed to an other hostel in the area and liked it better. But if you just want location, this is it!
Oh and dont even try to use their wifi. Unexistent, plus you’ll have to pay for it.
T. M.All the staff are friendly and helpful. Close to the tram stop for going to the city centre. Stayed in en suite double room, plenty of privacy with the bonus of hostel pricing. Its a good clean hostel but if your working early in the morning then you will have a hard time sleeping.
A. A.I think I couldn't sleep for hours. The dorm rooms are as noisy as it can get, I am sure there was some vandalism happening alongside the little fights that broke out every 10 mins. The rooms from inside are alright nothing fancy but enough. The toilet was clean and had hot water. The staff was nice and sort of friendly. I wouldn't stay there again though.

Had a cracking ping-pong table in the bar. Bar had an event on most nights which, during the winter months, provided much entertainment. In particular bingo night on a Monday is a must.
Massive plus to the hostel is the staff. In particular Austin (Golden showers), Alex and Kelton (the k-train) were hilarious and made it feel like a home away from home.
Met some fantastic people and would love to come back. Sad to leave.
Rooms were lovely for a hostel, but must admit ten o'clock cleaning every morning was a bit tedious (specially after multiple late nights at the bar).
If you stay here visit the bar Lona around the corner! If you become a member you get happy hour all day every day and the manager is a hoot.

K. F.I was in Melbourne for a few days to check out the area and interview for jobs, looks for flats etc before moving down. Base was great! Everyone's super friendly and helpful, the lockers are secure, the showers were clean and the atmosphere was fun. I had to do a bit of freelance work while there and I sat in the main lounge area drinking a pint to do it!
Little bit noisy at night, but what hostel isn't? Loved it, would defs recommend.
T. M.Private ensuite was tiny but clean as was the room. The hostel is filled with young people that lay in bed on their phones all day and party all night. Location was great. It's not too central, but you can easily enough travel by tram. Boozy Bingo on Monday is a must at Base.
D. M.We were recommended to stay here by a friend living in the city over a year. Saying no where is better in St kilda. What a place! The rooms were a standard clean hostel with a free locker each. Our room was reality clean and well insulated from the party going on in the hostels bar below. Staff were helpful (toni), friendly and very quirky (maximin). Only issue I had with it was the free WiFi isn't free after a day and it's pretty slow.

Gorgeous best friend (blonde babe). Dealt with my outrageous behaviour and dramas along the way. She supported my unreasonable relationships and drinking efforts. She made home away from home. Nicely presented hostel and branding. Even paid WiFi wasn't great though and too many guests seemed to "live" there, so everyone already in big groups, so not ideal for making friends on a short stay.
T. M.I have stayed here a few times and in the past thought it okay for a backpackers. Budget accomodation that is clean but without any bells and whistles at all. The staff were friendly but that's where the positives run out. Stayed in a private room which was small but provided what I needed a bed and a bathroom.

B. O.Basically a night club with beds, but staff was friendly and the noise shut down right around the time we went to sleep. Double room had own toilet which was nice. Location is also great, close to great food.coffee and ~10 minute walk to see the penguins at the pier.

D. I.This is a party hostel and the room cleanliness was disgusting, rubbish and empty glasses in the room wasn't cleaned up. Bathroom was disgusting would not stay here again. The property also is badly damaged by past guests and needs a decent renovation.
T. M.All facilities were good. The staff were nice though their always trying to get you to the bar with promotions and special offers. I guess the location is the best thing about it as it's so close to st kilda beach. Definitely will return, in fact will be returning in December.
T. M.It's very gay friendly and there are people from all over the world staying there. People should know before they stay that base tend to have a bar open to the early hours so noise is going to be expected. Would recommend xbase and would stay here again if we returned.

Free Wi-Fi but unfortunately really slow and unusable in the rooms but there is a pay per WiFi service that works. Bar inside the building with ping pong and activities organised every day. A bit too pricy but overall good.

T. M.I stayed at BASE in a double room with an ensuite as there were limited hotel options in Melbourne due to conventions and spring races. We were in a private double room and the shower had mold growing on the ceiling. The noise was over the top and the smell in the hallways was repulsive.

Cheap beds right next to the beach in St Kilda and right next to Acland street, cheap food and something fun happening every night to join in with (if you don't have work the next day :P Simon sorted me right outttt with my travel stuff and the staff are basically my second family now. <3
E. C.I've been to many Base Backpackers throughout New Zealand and Australia, and I've got to say this is the best Base hostel I have ever been to! The vibe is great and staff are so friendly - if you're ever down they'll help drag you out of your room (and get you flipping drunk haha) and if you're ever stuck for something to do then they have a whole host of activities and know of things to do either in St Kilda or in the city centre. Rosie on the Travel desk is a minefield of information, so friendly and helpful and is always happy to help you out with trips to go on and where's best to go in the country, and if you're after a job then Sophie on the Jobsearch desk is fantastic! If she can cope with my job hunt stress for the last five weeks then she can handle anyone. Big shout outs also go to Stuart, Vanessa, and the rest of the reception and promo staff, you guys are the best!!
