I. l. t. m. i.The location is great, close to everything, chapel street, botanical Gardens, parks and South Yarra centre is just 10 minutes away if you walk.
They do the cleaning of the interior areas three times a week, bed sheets, pillows and some general items are also provided. There are two kitchens, the fridges are fully shared and everyone respects other people's space.
There is a TV room, a back yard, coin operated laundry ($3 dryer, $4 washing), no carpark space (there is space for three cars but they're always taken.
The reception is very friendly, the price is $225 per week for single private room.
A one week deposit is required.
Due to the location you'll always hear the noise if the cars.
It's a good place for short term stay.
J.Initially booked and planned to stay here for five nights when I first landed in Melbourne to give myself time to find a flat. Ended up staying around 3-4 months because I loved it here so much.
The location is perfect for all of the restaurants and bars along Chapel Street.
The hostel is a perfect size to get to know everybody there. It felt like one huge family during my stay, and I've made friends for life from all over the world.
Aaron and his team do a great job to make you as welcome as possible and I'd love to stay here again next time I hit Melbourne.
A. w. A.Solid hostel, was my home for a 2 months or so and I made some excellent friends there. It's small enough so you get to know everyone and that facilities are good along with excellent management. The owner is really friendly and he definitely makes te stay worthwhile and if you have any issues you can rely on him to help you out. Hope it survives corona and I'll definitely be back to visit.

N.A MUST STAY
Location:
It's located just off Chapel Street, which is one of Melbourne's best entertainment districts. The hostel is a 5 minute walk to bars, nightclubs and restaurants which is great as you don't need to spend money on transport.
Cleanliness:
The hostel is made up of an old converted townhouse, which gives it a nice homely feel, although it looks old, it is kept very clean, with cleaners attending to it daily.
Staff:
The manager Aaron is fantastic and very accommodating to your needs. His persona is an example of Melbourne people in general.
Security:
The hostel is located in a very safe and clean neighbourhood.
Value for Money:
A good price for a nice hostel, I'd stay here again.
P. G.This place is probably the best hostel I've stayed at and became a home away from home. Aaron and his team do a great job and always go the extra mile for the people that come to stay. Back of Chapel is a lively and fun place to stay and there is hardly ever a dull moment. It's in a perfect location that provides easy access to bars, clubs and amazing food all along Chapel street. It's also very easy to get to the city as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and will certainly miss all of the people that I pretty much call family now. I will never forget my stay at Back of Chapel and I have never felt more welcome at any other hostel.

J. a. J.Had a great stay at South Yarra Hostel. The staff were great and the room was clean. There are two kitchens on site so it was always easy to cook. The showers were generally hot and recently updated.
The Location is perfect. Easy access to get into the city and St Kilda. If you want to stay longer like many other guests there this is the place to be.
Really enjoyed our stay will be back next time we visit Melbourne
J. H.Excellent experience at this hostel. Perfect for those who are working a lot as it has a more chilled and homely vibe. The lounge has Netflix and usually draws in other guests which allows for company and nights out if you desire. Two kitchens with ovens, free WiFi, decent showers, large rooms with desks for work and situated in a fantastic location.
H. G.My stay at the back of chapel hostels was 3 weeks. I must admit in the start I was a bit skeptic of the place due to its "rustic" appearance but already after the first night my skeptisism went away. The atmosphere in the hostel is amazing, it's like being a part of a big family. Rooms are cleaned regularly, free breakfast, and its location is perfect if you want to explore Melbourne, without busting the bank! Aaron and his staff at back of chapel made my stay in Melbourne wonderful, can't recommend this place enough, fantastic value !
J. W.As a solo backpacker this has been the best hostel I've stayed in in Melbourne. It's not super tidy or fancy but the other travellers who stay there are super friendly, fun and welcoming, like a big family. Feels like more of a sharehouse than a hostel, I felt right at home straight away. Great location right on Chapel Street as well.

Just off chapel street with great cafes, bars and shops! Good place to meet people, but usually quite during the week so perfect for if you’re working and want to stay long term. Good kitchen, laundry and living room! Would definitely recommend!
M. M.Kitchen area was very dirty, dishes was dirty and sticky and dishes was bad condition. Common areas was cold. Our room have a heater so it was good and warm. Laundry machine was good and price was reasonable and the machine wash and dry very well our laundry. Good location, only 10 minutes walk to South Yarra station.

+ Many people stayed there for many months so the atmosphere was rather like in a shared house than in a typical hostel

I. R.There is no better place to stay in Melbourne. They have the best staff, Josh and Aaron are both lovely. They are nice, easy going and always there to help! Kelly the cleaner is awesome, she will always make you laugh and keeps the place in tip top shape! They have 4 great showers, a coin washer and dryer and a good sized kitchen. For being a "hostel" it really gives the feeling of being right at home. All of the rooms are good sizes and beds that are very comfortable with clean sheets! You have access to lockers and bins to keep all your belongings in, very convenient. Each bed or private room has a space in the kitchen where you can store food/dishes. The fully equipped kitchen makes it easy to cook for yourself (a great way to save money when travelling) the free breakfast is a definite bonus! There are plenty of grocery stories close buy which was also very convenient, since we're all on a budget. Since it is a smaller hostel you can become quite close with everyone, it's like a family. There are always people doing stuff and everyone is always included (if they choose to be). This was one of the best things I found staying here especially since we were all travelling we were all in the same boat. You can relate very easily. The location is another selling point, it's a 2 minute walk to chapel street. This is one Melbourne's hottest spots with amazing bars and restaurants to really cool shops. It has it all. It also has access to a tram/train station that can take you into the CBD or to St.Kilda beach within minutes. You honestly couldn't ask for a better hostel! It doesn't matter if your staying for a few days or a month this hostel will exceed your expectations.
T. B.Location is fantastic for food, transportation, close to beach, city, parks. It's popular with local workers who stay here to save money. Has a kitchen and laundry facility. Reception staff only available part time but they make arrangements for after hours check in if you book at least one day in advance. However, can be noisy in evenings with local restaurant throwing out glass recycling and residents staying up and talking. No air conditioning so best sleeping on hot nights is with windows open. But bathroom/kitchen facilities are cleaned daily, free bread and cereal for breakfast, and long term residents are very welcoming.
S. S.Had an awesome stay at South Yarra Hostel, the guests are really friendly and the staff super nice. I stayed in a private room which was quiet. The dorm rooms that i saw were really big.
They have 2 kitchens which are always open. Plenty of ovens and cook tops to use. There are two tv's with netflix, one is in a kitchen which was great to watch tv while having breakfast.
The location was great less than 10 minutes to get into the city and beautiful parks within a few minutes walking.
Highly recommend staying here for short or long term

The staff are helpful, they would help people with transport reservations if needed, help with directions and so forth. There was a cleaner every day, and because of the great utilities the stay would be very cozy. Nice small hostel were people get to know each other really fast.
During the warm period they even served free popsicles. I would go back any time!
s. l.Overall good hostel. It's a prime location directly between the city and beach. Tram and bus stop directly in front of it. It doesn't have a hostel feeling. It's actually really homey and easy to meet people. And free Netflix is always a plus. Highly recommend it.

A. H. P.I have been hosted at Back of Chapel since 2010, after immigrated to Australia. I loved so much, I came back back in 2016 already as an Aussie citizen, after traveling in South America, and now, for a short break between Christmas 2019 and the New Year 2020. Back of Chapel has a remarkable location, close to the Albert Park, the Middle Park beach and St Kilda, very nice vibs always, The Astor Theater at a walking distance and Prahran swimming pool as well. This place really feels like home with a free breakfast included.

The new owners, Josh and Aaron will go out of their way to help you, which you do not get in bigger hostels. So many good points:The hostel is kept very clean and rooms cleaned weekly, free fast wifi, free breakfast between 8.30-11, beds are made up for you, own lockers in rooms, comfy chill out room where many people like to socialise in the evenings and great location next to chapel st. Cant recommend enough.

H.Sometimes its a bit loud at Night but thats okay cause after 2 days at the Back of Chapel you will make new friends and go to make Party aswell. All in all its very clean. The rooms are big and the beds are comftable. You should stay there if you are in Melbourne.

s. s.When i first arrived it was meant as a temporary stop while looking for a apartment. But after a week staying here i found myself loving it so much i did not even bother looking any further for another place.
The place is very clean and gets cleaned every morning.
There is a free breakfast every morning. With several things to choose from.
The common room feels like a big home living room where u can relax, have a chat, play a game, or watch a movie.
The home like feeling makes it easy to get to know your fellow backpackers without compromising your nights rest or privacy.
The location ( a side street of Chappell st ) is nearby almost every thing. Public transport is literally around the corner and there is a coles, aldi and woolworth in walking distance.
Chappell st is filled with bars, restaurants, clubs, and clothing stores to discover. But because its on a side street of the busy street u don't have to worry about to much noise or disturbance.
Overall it is the greatest hostel i have stayed so far.

J’ai eu l’occasion de faire différent Hostel a Melbourne, la plus tard n’ont pas l’eau chaud dans les douches, Les femmes de ménages viennent une fois part semaine et encore,..
Ici c’est clean, les douches ont l’eau chaud, y a pas de champignons dégueu sur les murs, il y a 2 beaux balcons, le personnel est super sympa.
Si vous êtes du genre tranquille, poser, musée, restaurant,… vous trouverez votre bonheur a porter de main,
Si vous êtes plus du samedi soir (ici Vendredi soir) c’est génial il y a plein de bar, club, c’est chapel street ☺
