A. B.Good location. Me and my girlfriend stayed here for three nights and the room was quite hot. The hostel can seem quite old and lots of things are worn-out. The kitchen is quite big and there are almost always enough room for you to cook your food. During the usual dinner hours (17-20) the hostel adds an extra employee to clean the kitchen - something that a lot of hostels should learn from! The hallways of the hostel made it obvious why they named it 'Maze'. Also if you get back to the hostel in the evening, the staff will be asking if they can see your key. It's nice that they have this safety measure.
As what I can read from reviews, it sounds like they have renovated the rooms since I was here. The rooms were unbearably hot when we were there, but it might not be so bad now.
S. I.Great hostel, would definitely recommend. The single rooms had plenty of room. Sheets and towels (1 per person) are complimentary. The rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and building were clean. The kitchen has everything you need utensils wise, but can get busy at peak hours. Activities and free food are held most nights, helping you meet others.

Tiny rooms gave us a very suffocating feeling, and it was quite hot - we asked the staff to let us check out other rooms - they graciously accepted. On not finding a room with any better situation, we were a bit disappointed. But the staff came to our room and offered an extra fan. That was really sweet and made our stay much more comfortable.
The rooms are still really small tho :P

C. A.I stayed here a few times when in Sydney and really liked the vibe this place had. Decent people, friendly staff and they gave a serious amount of free food out as well which was awesome. The kitchen was very well equipped and they had a massive stock of crockery etc which was always being cleaned for you.
The showers were clean and the rooms were a reasonable size too. The beds could of been less squeeky and more sturdy but other than that I can't complain. They also offered some days trips here as well so I went on the blue mountains tour :) a great hostel.

The location was the best part of this place, pretty much everything you could want is within walking distance. Plenty of great places to eat nearby, as well as vending machines on the property. Room was small, but very reasonable for the price. Great facilities, movie room, ample kitchen and dinning as well as decent bathrooms. Can get a little street noise, but the hostel itself has a no noise after 11pm rule for guests, didn't have trouble sleeping.
R. D.Excellent social backpackers. Lovely staff - so helpful - and the guests are really nice, none of the weird vibes of some other places. Lots of communal activities so you get to have an active social schedule. Huge clean kitchen, large pool room, movie room and dining area. Good location and excellent rates for central Sydney. Towels provided and clean and comfortable bedding. One thing I would say is that hostels can be cliquey but that’s on YOU the visitor, not the hostel ;)
P. W.It’s a good location. Staff are friendly and polite. They work very hard to keep the bathrooms clean, which looks like it must be a very difficult task. Bathrooms are much nicer than when I last stayed here several years ago.
Unfortunately, the rooms are still pretty much the same. Over $100 for 2 nights. At least now they are providing towels(maybe just for rooms, don’t know about dorms) and the sheets are nice cotton.
I know people complain about the smell in some of the rooms, especially the internal ones. But try having a room directly above the spot where they park the truck to clean out the grease traps (late Sunday night/ early Monday morning). I can not describe the smell that filled my room.
Then early the next morning a Lubemobile van has used the same spot to service a ute. I don’t know what he was doing but it was very noisy. Probably running a generator.
L. S.Excellent location in the city, clean and tidy, with crisp fresh sheets, pillow and blanket on a comfy mattress. Shared bathroom was clean, but lacked any place to put your things (like a shelf) or a dry spot to get dressed. For $50 A night for a single room with keycard access, I'll be staying again
M. B.Great location--only two blocks from Central Station and Museum Station. Only a 10 minute public transit ride to Circular Quay and the Opera House. Lots of bars, convenience stores, and Asian food nearby. Hostel is quite literally maze and a little confusing on the inside, but the kitchen and lounge areas are easy to find and quite big. Bathrooms weren't the cleanest. We stayed in a private double room and the only thing in the room was a double bed and a bedside table. My only complaints would be that the building was old and a little smelly and the street was noisy on the weekend nights. Overall though a great place if you are looking for a great location at a reasonable price.

The bathrooms are nicer than a lot of other backpacker hostels I've visited in the past.
Communal Kitchen is very well equipped for heavy use across patrons, and well maintained!
The carpets could use a refurbished or replacement (there was a perfect 'Iron face' melt-print on the floor in the 2-bed room we were in on 2nd floor)
But that aside would very highly recommend this backpackers!
S. R.Great Hostel - best one I've been to in Sydney. Lived here for four months, three years ago and just spent a couple of weeks here now.
The hostel has had a lot of improvements - showering facilities, more secure and more free food. They really make a big effort to give guests a good time with free food, drink vouchers, cheap nights out and daily activities.
Holly and Jess are very helpful and very friendly on reception.
The only down side is they took away the free goon games. Having the goon games in the kitchen was always very inclusive and a good way for people to meet, so it's a shame that has gone.
Apart from that I would really recommend this hostel to anyone. Clean rooms, big kitchen, good showering facilities and free food!
S. U.Everything you need for a "cheap" big city stay
It's close to the centre, it's clean (although a bit old) and the facilities like kitchen is pretty good. There could be more laundry rooms, sometimes you have to queue. I can only speak for the double room which was clean and enough for a two night stay, don't know about the conditions in the dorms.
You get a towel, free food like burger pancake and chicken curry on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for everybody which is really nice and made by volunteers (just grab a plate and have a nice free dinner). They have lots of vouchers and free activities and they care about your safety (it's huge hostel and that's not easy).
I would recommend it!

The atmosphere is great and perfect for new backpackers looking to make new friends. Great short term accommodation.
The new access card is a much better/safer system than when I previously stayed and used a normal key.
Bathrooms are extremely out of date compared to others that I have seen. The carpets need replacing.

E. A.Though there are some nice activities during the week, but I expected more. The personnel is very nice, I must say. The hostel has a strange smell, however it appears to be clean. I had no idea that in Australia the checkout was at 10, so I was hurried by the personnel and my deposit was not taken away.
A. T.Friendly people, fast service, conveniently located. The shower and toilet are good, urinal is very limited though. The mattress is old and no longer gives, some rooms doesn't lock properly - if you push the door hard enough, it'll open easily; the lock is just a decoration.

If you deduct the free things you get from the room cost you will see great value. Stay a week and enjoy the free perks. Nice tv room and pool table room.24 hour reception is handy for checking out.You can't check in until 2pm as they have to clean the rooms but will let you use facilities inside until your room is ready. Best value in sydney in my opinion.
M. O.Not the best but definitely not the worst hostel I have stayed in in Australia. The guy a reception unfortunately forgot to tell me that there are rooms with the same number but different colours on one floor, which got tired me pretty confused, the hostel is definitely a maze!
The only big Problem I have with the hostel was the bed. It is quite uncomfortable and loud! Me and the girl in the other bunk could not move an inch without the bed being incredibly noisy.
The bathroom is okay pretty clean, everything is a bit old and the cleaning staff came to clean the bathroom at 8am when everybody needed to get ready for check out and/work etc. A bit weird.
M. S.This hostel is a good value for a very expensive city like Sydney. I stayed in a private room (with a shared bathroom). This review is for one of those rooms not a regular dorm room. I would recommend booking on their website directly for you might get a better price- I got the private room for about 40$US per night during summer. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean (although the bathroom was a bit of walk from my room). The room was somewhat dated and small (and the door could have used some new paint) but I slept well and the hostel is in a good location - about 5 to 10 minute walk from the main train station, a 5 minute walk to the subway (you can walk to the Sydney Harbor in about 25 minutes or a quick subway ride) and a grocery store and a pub are only about 1 minute walk away. They do charge for wi-fi (goto Greyhound bus store next door and use it free with chairs for about 30 minutes if you ask nicely). Customer service at the front desk was very good-they have discounted tickets for attractions and they let me store my bags for free the day I checked out. They have free meals once or twice a week and a large kitchen good for cooking. The overall atmosphere was friendly and they have a tv and billiards room. There is no elevator here and it seemed like it could be a little noisy at nightime (that is not uncommon in hostels). For a very expensive city like Sydney this hostel is pretty good value for the money if you are just looking for a comfortable bed at night in a good location.

L. I.Best hostel I've stayed at in Sydney. For a very reasonable price you get a great location, a reception that genuinely cares about dealing with issues, food and events if you're into that and good kitchen facilities. It's kept clean as well (though obviously it's still a huge hostel full of backpackers). There's people staying long term as well as the usual travellers passing through, it's a good mix.

Also the organiser there Emily is a nice girl and tries her best to make everyone feel welcome. You can also take part in fun and games and go on trips with Emily and others. However there is no free wifi which makes it frustrating to go to other places to get it and free food is only available certain days. The rooms are also not the best I've stayed in as they are very basic

L. R.The only issue that I have with the hostel is the bad smell on the staircase. Aside from that-all pros-location is great for first timer like me as it is close to Central Station and Museum Station. You can walk and enjoy the sights of the CBD day in or night out.The single room I booked had a view of the streets and its not in its perfect condition. Ceiling had some walls about to fall, the wall fan is a little noisy. The showers and toilet were clean and had no incidents when I used them. I will not comeback thought unless I have no choice. I have a nice sleep and pleasant Sydney experience.

Z. H.It's how you would imagine a hostel. First night was kept awake by people in the next room but the guys working here dealt with that the next day and told them to leave. Debatable yellow stain up the wall in the corner of our room but the beds seem clean.. The twin room also kinda has that harry potter feel of living in a cupboard. They provide a towel for guests which is unusual! Good location though, short walk away from central station.

T. W.Best place for stay for long and short period. But this place do not have any elevator service. So you meed to carry your own 25kg bag 1 or 2 floors to your room. This is insane. But on the Monday Tuesday Thursday and Sunday there have free food for you. This save a lot of money for low budget backpacker.
J. B.We did a lot of searching and this was the cheapest at such short notice. They were really friendly and accommodating for any request and we were reasonably happy with our beds. If it were any colder in winter we would've needed an extra blanket but we were happy with what we had. Lots of great specials and discounts throughout as well
H. N.In all fairness, I think if you walk into Maze with the right expectation, it can be a pretty cool place for a budget stay and partying with fellow young people. The hostel is centrally located, supermarkets and a variety of (Asian) restaurants are just steps away. I did a quick research on nearby hostels (for my friends' short stay) and Maze pricing was the most competitive. As the rooms are tiny with just enough space for beds and minimal moving around, there are common areas for cooking, eating, showering and laundry. The kitchen and bathroom can be filthy and noisy especially when there are free food and activities; but with that many party animals residing in the building, one can't expect squeaky clean floor always. The front desk staff are very efficient and willing to assist. There's also a locked basement area for luggage storage. Internet can be purchased. All in all, if you look for an affordable stay in Sydney city, t'is a place to consider.

L. H.The room got really cold at night because they had the AC at full blast the entire time, but they do give you a blanket, which helped a bit. There is no locker in the room to secure your stuff.
The building is huge like size of a hotel and had hundreds of rooms. Not only was the building a bit confusing since each floor had two sides and each side was a different color on each floor, but the room numbers weren't as straightforward as walking a straight line. The building is a bit old and there was a funky smell in the stairway between the first and second floor; was not pleasant. There is no free wifi anywhere in the building. You had to pay for it if you wanted access, which was expensive.
I was only able to find a bathroom on my side of the floor, which had about 5 showers and toilets. The bathroom got pretty cold, so the hot water didn't help at all especially when the temperature kept changing from hot to luke warm. There were also no signs for the bathrooms, so finding them was an adventure.
The location was pretty convenient; restaurants and stores on every block within the vicinity.
e. m.It has a great location, plenty restaurants, bars and clubs around. It is just 3 blocs far way to train station (museum and central).
It is a really big backpackers and definitely you can find a lot of people from different countries.
On the other hand, rooms and toilets smell not good, and when we checked ou, they just ask to change the pillow cover but not bed sheets... We are not sure if they change them always.
It is really safe, we left our baggage a couples of hours after checked out and everything was ok.
M. E.Great place with a wonderful staff. Extra points for Byron who sets up activities for people to do in the Eve. The hostel is so big it's a great way to meet new people. And I'm not just writing this for free drink tickets (though I won't decline them).

It could be a solid 4, considering what hostels are for. However, foreigners should be warned that Australian hostels in general tend to be dirtier, noisier, and less comfy than their counterparts abroad (I am comparing to Canada, Finland, etc.).
Bottom line: 3 stars if you are not too fussy. But it is experiences such as this one that drove me towards better establishments as soon as I could afford a higher price range.

M. D.Exactly what you would expect, a bit like a university hall of residence. The rooms are dated, but it's quite cheap. There is an 11pm curfew which enforced by the staff and very much appreciated. The doors could do with softening, my room was next to a large dorm and when everyone got in late at night, the constant slamming of the doors was a bit unbearable.

M. D.I stayed here for 2 weeks recently. Really enjoyed my stay. The only problem is that they need passport as I.d to book a room. Was a real nuisance for me as I only flew domestically, therefore didn't have my passport on me. Thankfully I had a photo of my passport on me, otherwise I would've been screwed!

f. n.Location is amazing! So nearby to all public transport & shopping mall (there’s coles supermarket). They have quiet zone which i was allocated to. Amazing hospitality. Problem was wifi isnt free, luckily i got my 4g vodafone simcard. Also theres no lift, so be ready to carry bags up the stairs. I got comfy single room, its small but its comfortable. They provide towels & bedsheets. They dont allow food or drinks in room, theres dining area tho. They dont allow visitors at all-very strict.

P. T.I had a weekend in sydney and needed to be in the centre of town. Everything is so expensive in there, but the Maze offered very reasonable rates. Then I read all the scathing reviews... I was almost put off.
The majority of these reviewers are clearly over-pampered backpackers. It saddened me how petty some of the complaints were. Sure it's a little noisy; you are in the middle of town!
The room was fine,relatively clean with fresh sheets.The carpet was clearly old, but not anything that concerned me.
I arrived at 4pm and the staff (especially a spritely irish lass) were incredibly happy and helpful. My room was right beside the pool room; alarm bells? Sure there was a little rowdy behavior... it's a friday night... it's the city... I get on with things and shut mentally shut it out... being tired when you go to bed helps.
Overall, I was extremely surprised at how much I enjoyed my two nights at this timesaver.

It's only about a 15 minutes walk to all main attractions like Darling Harbour, the Sydney Opera House or even to Kings Cross.
The kitchen- and bathroom facilities are excellent but if you can't sleep in a noisy room it's not a place to stay for you!

A.The location is not superb. However You will have public transport next door. So it will take you 20-25min to get to the city. The hostel has a lot of free activities. It is recommended for youth. Not that much for the old couples :)

Sure it's not the Ritz but that's not what us backpackers are looking for... The team is really nice, and they do their absolute best to make sure you have a good time.

M.This backpacker's one of those , if you first arrive off the plane and have never done anything Australia as the guy's behind the reception are pretty good at pointing you in direction of what you should be doing on your gap year. It works well as working holiday accommodation as well as short term. The problems are to do with facilities , the kitchen is small and crowded and wifi is expensive.
However, you are in Oz , if you do not need tech or will probably just buy Oporto there always people here to hang out with and make friends so easily. Free goon is actually good.

Like a superhero my sister's husband stood a few feet behind me to make sure they weren't naughty. It's ok here for a short stay and a glimpse into the world of backpacker accommodation where the order of priorities for young people is like this: alcohol, extreme sports cliff diving etc, free food, accommodation.

But it is cheap and cheerful

Son un moco molestos con la tajeta de ingreso (que es la llave en el fondo de todas las puertas) que te hacen marcarla todo el tiempo al salir y entrar para tener un regristro de quien esta afuera y no, o algo asi. Eso es un poco molesto porque uno no anda preocupado de andar marcando como reloj control cuando uno esta de vacaciones.
