Comments of Aldgate Pump Hotel
K. S.
A big Thank you to The Aldgate hotel for putting on Christmas lunch for us.
It was really beautiful there. Table beautifully set.
Staff absolutely fantastic.
I guess I would have changed a few things. I don't think we needed the hot entree. We would have been happier with a potato on our main course. Very generous though.
Very kind of you to open and put yourselves out. We had a lovely time.
Thank you Josie for getting us in 🎄😊🎄
H. R. K.
Best beer garden in Adelaide! Just gorgeous! My photos don’t do this hotel justice for how beautiful it really is.
Happy hour 4-6pm
L. S.
A delightful venue in the Adelaide Hills with a small playground for kids with heaps of outdoor tables to enjoy under the dappled shade of tall leafy trees. Excellent meal and service.
P. M.
We came for one night we were greeted by Sandie who showed us to our room and explained everything. The room was beautiful and we even had a complementary mini bar. We had drinks in the bar and the barman was great, I wanted a cocktail and he asked what I liked and he made me a perfect drink. Sandie was in the bar and made us feel so welcome and she made sure our glasses were not empty, great employee. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was amazing3 absolutely loved it. The wine room is spectacular and the decor of the hotel is beautiful.
F. B.
Lovely setting, wonderful outdoor area, friendly staff. Let downs are average food and mainstream early 80s music.
D. B.
Really good food at ok prices, more expensive than standard pub food. Drinks were variable, wine per glass is overpriced but beer was well priced. Dessert was awesome and again reasonably priced. Private booth nice and quiet in a busy place, great for talking. Large outside dining area. Food arrived in a reasonable time but meals did not arrive together. They need to work on that. Overall nice food, and pleasant surrounding but total cost a bit high.
R. G.
Stunning, scenic, leafy outside dining.
Spoilt for choice with an extensive menu- wait till you see what's on offer in the chef's specials!
Cannot rate the flavour of this food high enough.
Lovely vibe going on.
Get there for summer!
J. F.
Friendly, efficient service, however I don't need to hear the personal conversion between staff - (BTW enjoy being 27 it was the best time of my life!)
Cajun prawns with chat potatoes great, chicken skewers with spicy coleslaw delicious, steamed greens limp and tasteless, prawn dumplings with dipping sace (more of a paste) very disappointing the pastry way too thick for a delicate prawn filling and the prawn filling was tasteless 😑
I'll go back as it is a beautiful place and order straight pub fare and I'm sure it will be great!
C. B.
Nice atmosphere. Lovely staff, good food. Recomend deffinately 👍
N. Z.
Nice place to eat lunch while kids play on the playground
K. E.
Delicious! Great for kids with the new playground. And the desserts are to die for 😋. A smile from the staff wouldn't go astray 🤷🏼♀️ but overall a great hills venue!
M. M.
A cosy pub with excellent atmosphere (fireplace excellent in winter) with nice booths that isolated and intimate. Menu is varied and changes with season, excellent range of chef specials and vegetarian options. There is however a variable number of gluten free options so make sure you check ahead. Prices are reasonable in the range of approximately $18 - 35. Good selection of beers both bottles and on tap available. Wine selection interesting and varied. Overall an excellent dining experience (salt and pepper readily available).
J. M.
I had a schnitzel which was huge and very tasty. Lovely veg and chips. I'd come back.
K. M.
Lovely pub. Excellent food, the staff seem to all be quite happy and attentive. A genuine typical country pub.
Update: while prices have climbed very marginally over the 5 years, this remains a lovely pub..
c. c.
Lamb rump and beetroot salad were very nice, avoid the dumplings. Apple and rhubarb crumble was nice, not so sure about the random blob if cream.
H. J.
Fantastic place, great meals and very good service
A. J.
One of the best meals ever! Excellent steak cooked perfectly, delicious mashed potatoes, and the side dish of steamed greens was superb. Efficient and friendly staff and practically every table full - clearly a very popular spot for dinner!! Thanks for a fantastic evening 👌
J. E.
Outside in good weather. Menu varied. Food good. Service okay. Need to look at big step down from one level to another - dangerous. Also condition of steps.
D. K.
An oldtime favourite Pub of mine in the Adelaide Hills however, I was disappointed with the "cold reception" on my last visit. It almost felt unwelcoming which is such a shame! Service was very poor as was the Burger & Chips I ordered. I did a favour by not photographing my meal! Disappointing.
A. Y.
Nice atmosphere, busy venue. Unfortunately my fish wasn't completely cooked through which was a bit off putting but the rest of the group were all pleased with their food. Service was excellent
P. v. r.
Friday night outing , dinner was so good and tasty. Friendly staff good old fashioned service, well recommended. Keep up the hospitality well done Pump Hotel. Will definitely be back soon.
M. H.
Tony and Josie are great family hospitality operators. Food is fantastic, generous serves too
D. R.
Schnitzels were tough with a leathery base.
Service was slow and tables were too close together.
Great deserts and coffees.
C. M.
Very creative vegan menu. Pictured are the vegan “steak” made from chickpeas and lentils and vegan “fillet mignon” made from veggies and coloured with beetroot. Nice and tasty food.
E.
Warm and friendly family owned pub. Glad to call it my local... and I am very local!! Staff are always friendly and happy to help. Food top notch and also to top it off with they have the classic hills fireplaces and a kids playground. We are always so well looked after so cheers guys. Can't beat Clara's hospitality or friendly nature. A credit to the pub. Edward and I love it here.
C. S.
Good consistent meals at reasonable prices. Quiet enough to talk. Service efficient and unobtrusive. A local pub that we keep going back to more than the rest.
c.
Beautiful and friendly atmosphere, friendly staff, and great food! I cannot believe the cleanliness of this facility, particularly the dishes. Ate a delightful meal of Fish and Chips with a Crème Brûlée. Cannot believe the quality of this food! Just TOO GOOD!!! You must have a brilliant kitchen hand and dessert chef back there!
P. G.
Tasty, diverse menu and easy to access for my 90 year old mother with a walking frame :-)
P. L.
Good beer selection and food was fantastic with lots of options on the menu. Great outdoor space too :)
J. T.
Good food, nice staff, cold beer👍
S. H.
Lovely surrounds. Pleasant service, well priced and very cosy.
a. w.
Had lunch there recently, the menu is basic, needs a touch of imagination. However food was well cooked and presented. Outside there is a very pleasant beer garden, but inside the decor is due for an update, a bit dark and dreary.
Still worth a visit.
K. M.
Wow! I have rediscovered this beautiful place! The vegan menu is spectacular!
J. R.
Had late lunch/early dinner there today with wife and parents. Mixed order of huge tasty mussels and oysters Kilpatrick, best ever charred kangaroo fillet, fillet steak on the volcanic rock that melted in your mouth, cappuccino, latte and huge affogatos.
Everything was absolutely amazing, food, great service and warm open fire atmosphere all at very reasonable prices.
Can't wait to go back. 10/10!!
L. R.
Beautiful beer garden in the hills. Playground for kids and the chips were a favourite.
S. R. 4.
Great food, huge meals, friendly staff. Dining room is quite squishy and probably starting to need a revamp, as does the outdoor dining area, which could be better utilised. Otherwise no complaints!
G. C.
Came here for a drink with mate, great staff and nice front bar. Love the new dining room, rear bar is still the same as the 1990s with large round windows and three ducks on wall. Pokie room and bottle shop like a maze. Will have to try food!
N. C.
Beautiful atmosphere - warm and not super loud even though the place was full. Sadly the hot rocks were out of action but the traditional cooked steak was cooked perfectly and delicious
K. M.
We would give Katie six stars if we could. Fantastic service, knew the wine selection in detail and allergy aware. Plus happy & friendly. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.
G. H.
Love the algate pump kids can play out side while we relax👍
R. F.
The meals and environs were generally satisfactory with one exception, please tell the chef that, while a generous portion, that meal was not a red curry of duck.
N. M.
Good food friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Outside in the garden in summer magic. Inside in the winter by the fire is perfect. Can't really go wrong here folks. Bottle shop guy is an absolute legend too. Winning on all fronts.
J. B.
Great hotel excellent menu, lovely service very friendly.
J. R.
Great outdoor area to sit and enjoy a nice afternoon.
C. F.
Beautiful surroundings, menu and establishment. Good menu and lovely staff, recommend a stop at. However did not enjoy my batter on my fish. Very thick batter which spoiled meal and tiny tiny salad for the pricing.
D. F.
Did not quite meet expectations but they were giving it a go. Lovely old building. The bloke in the bottle shop was fantastic, very helpful.
C. P.
Lovely booth tables and friendly staff. Great menu with a good variety of food. The prices are highish but the serves are large with quick service.
T. M.
It's a nice country pub. Front Bar looks nice and modern, but still keeping its tradional look. Dining room has some nice booths, and is a reasonable size. Food is great quality, a good number of Chef Specials. Pricewise, it a little above average but still fairly reasonable. Staff are friendly, and food was served in excellent time despite being quite busy.
L. M.
A great pub! and I saw some dude stack it on his bike.
D. T.
A very enjoyable family evening with great food in extremely pleasant surroundings. The staff were very attentive and efficient. Highly recommended.
C. F.
Top rate meal. Will tell friends and family about this awesome hotel, meal was fantastic and a large serve. Thanks again
A. S.
Great little pub with plenty of old school charm.
Fella's in the drive through were great, very helpful.
Sadly the same can't be said about the lady on the front bar. I think you had to be a local to get the friendly part of the service bit. At least the service was prompt and the beer ice cold.....
A. H.
I had the vegetarian gnocchi which was awesome and cooked perfectly, the calamari was super tender and mussels were great too (I'm told). Everybody loved their meals.
Our group of 7 included a vegetarian and a lactose intolerant celiac and we had no trouble with food options which was great!
Good service at the bar and a lovely outdoor area too :)
K. M.
Wow!
We took my 2 Aunts that were visiting from interstate, along with my Dad, husband and daughter. We take them there each year they visit us and we are yet to be disappointed.
We love to old English pub feel and love the work they are doing to restore it to its former glory. Loving the playground out the back to distract the kids while we are having our meal.
As for the food, there wasn't a scrap left! The lamb shanks were divine, awesome for a visit in the cooler weather. The lambs fry took my Aunt back to her childhood and the other loved her fish and chips.
My husband had the chicken parmigiana and that was devoured! I had a serve of the pumpkin arancini and it took a lot of restraint not to lick the bowl to get every bit of the blue cheese sauce! The kids meal was brought out earlier, but not too early that she'd finished by the time our meals came out.
We will return again and I'm sure my Aunts will request dinner here again when they visit next year. Can't speak highly enough of this hotel. We always feel welcome when we come in.
Thank you.
M. F.
All food coming out the kitchen looked amazing and ours certainly tasted fantastic. Menu catered for all dietary requirements including some increadible vegan options. Indoor dining had a great atmosphere along with a lot of outdoor seating options as well.
C. S.
Lovely pub. The interiors are comfy, cosy and familiar, and so is the food. The salad that came with my perfectly cooked calamari was incredibly simple, but a flawless mix of flavours and textures nonetheless. Similarly, the sticky date pudding was nothing new or novel, but remains the best I've ever had. Proximity to other diners was my only issue, so I'd suggest reserving a booth table or outdoor table if you need extra space or prefer lower volumes.
S. A.
Great service and food. I loved the beer garden and inside interior. I had been wanting to go for years and I finally got around to it. It was even better than I expected
M. H.
Pleasantly surprised after reading some mixed reviews. The food was lovely and fresh and really generous serves. Staff were friendly and very accommodating and thoughtful. This was our first visit and I was looking for somewhere half way for a catch up with friends. We choose the Aldgate Pump because of the outdoor playground. It had rained earlier in the day so things were a bit damp but we choose to sit outside anyway for our almost 4yo's sake and it turned into a lovely afternoon. We will definitely be back.
Z.
The lunch menu is pretty great and they are still tasting delicious even in these COVID times. The toilets look nice and clean and the food is scrumptious.
B. S.
While looking for a quick meal close by, we resorted to the Pump Hotel, since our usual haunts weren't open or were booked out. So glad we did! Hadn't tried it for a while and we were totally blown away by the excellent meals. My partner had a steak (it was steak night), which was large, succulent and delicious (apparently)... I had calamari. Both beautifully prepared with interesting flavour combinations. The house wine was excellent too (Q merlot) - tasted wooded from barrel fermentation and a deep, quality flavour, with generous glasses for around $7.50!
Don't judge their food by their website...looks like that needs a bit of work, with better photos and links needed etc, but rest assured the food is great now that they have a new chef :)
A. M.
Great restaurant. Friendly and beautiful. We had nice time with delicious food and good music.
K. M.
Delicious food, great staff
D. D.
10 of us went for dinner tonight and while the food was good the large young woman with ginger hair was by far the worst waitress I've ever encountered.
The problem i think was she didn't realise how rude she was to not only our table but other table's as well.
Terrible just terrible.
v. n.
Popped into Aldgate Pump Hotel on a drive around Adelaide Hills. First step in was won by the atmosphere the quaintness the old English feel. Staff very pleasant, meal was good. Will recommend plus will make it one to flag when area again.
K. M.
First time I've been to Aldgate Pump for a meal. It was awesome, great lamb shanks. Will definitely go back again.
M.
Food is good quality although there is not many non fish options outside of steak or schnitzel. I had a soft drink which tasted like RC Cola which was pretty bad. Service is pretty good
h. w.
A nice quiet pub in the quaint hills town of Aldgate and a great place for seniors ! Lunch only $15 and includes desert. Glasses of wine in small or large sizes to suit your budget. Lovely meals and we will definitely be going back.
N. M.
Plenty of choice, great specials and kid friendly
S. M.
Had our Mothers Day evening meal here. The menu far exceeded the typical pub fare and the meals were well priced and filling. The gnocchi with roast pumpkin, rocket & macadamia was delicious and something I would return for.
R. M. (.
Used to be very good with booths, first come first served, but now it seems you need to book if you want one! Food has gone downhill too but do recomend the hot rock steak. Has some nice outdoor seating but tends to cater for familys that let their kids run amok.
C. W.
Beautiful home cooked soul food & an even better atmosphere with great service!
A. B.
I like the set up and the pub itself. But charging $12 for a handful of chips is ridiculous to feed a few starving kids. Either serve a lot more chips (recommend 3 handfuls for $12) or the price should be about $7.
T. H.
Interesting menu from pub food to Coorong flounder to Southern smoked brisket, large wine-by-glass and beer list, toasty fire.
b. a.
Too many steps for my liking. The chefs specials were well cooked well presented unfortunately the vegetables that went with the main meal looked like they had been taken from a yuppie pig trough.
P. B.
Always good & again food & $ hit the mark along with a few🍺 &🥂
J. T.
Great selection of wines at reasonable prices, everything from inexpensive to $50 plus wines. Plus stock most of the "hope!" and New Era wines, two bushfire affected wineries.
S. H.
The dining room and other public spaces are starting to look very dated. However, this is still a good option for good quality meals at a decent price.
The odours in the dining room are not always pleasant as some menu options are served on 'hot rocks'.
K. R.
Great selection on the menu they even had a vegan section. Decor was like an old time Irish Pub which was lovely and had an open fire so was very homely
M. J.
Beautiful food & good service
S. S.
The Aldgate Pump is a great old pub. Meals are good - they also cater to vegans and vegetarians. They have been busy each time we've been but service is always friendly.
N. P.
Not a bad place to get a meal, they have made some interesting changes to the menu don't know if i really like the whole hot rock thing but you can always get the standard pub meals. Nice fire in the dining room.
S. J.
Lovely beer garden. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.
T.
Lovely location, friendly staff, pub decor dated but nice place to go for a drink
R. B.
We used to be regulars to the dining room, but since the new owners have introduced the cooking stones, the place is smelling like a charnel house. And the poor waitresses having to handle those godawful things nearly breaking their wrists... is just horrible to see. And no oil so half the meat sticks to the stones anyway. Stinking. Disgusting. I can't bring a vegetarian friend there either. Get rid of the stones and return to a menu where the cooking smells remain in the kitchen and we would consider coming back, because we love the place really.
S. L.
This pub could be soooooo much nicer. Really needs renovating. Its in a great position and has a lot of history but the interior is is so tired. The beer garden and restaurant are ok, but in general the place could be much better.
L. G.
Good customer service, good food however a bit of overkill on cleaning polish used in the pub. Gave us a bit of a headache, still a great establishment.
b. l.
Great food and selection of beer and wine. Combustion fire in need some attention.
P. B.
Shared a lovely Sunday lunch with dear friends at this hidden gem in the Adelaide hills. Beautiful food and excellent service in quaint, old world surroundings. Perfect!
J. V.
Excellent old fashioned customer service, food was delicious, a great old pub, clean and fresh 👍👍👍 make sure you stop by
P. H.
If you like to go on a country drive or ride? Then this place is a must stop and see, winter time great fireplaces.
Summer time most beautiful beer garden.
Have a beer for me to.😜
S. M.
Great beer garden with play area for the kids. Food was also very good. Small selection of beer but we had a great time.
I. B.
Great meal in a nice outdoor setting under the trees. Playground seemed popular too. Try an alcoholic ginger beer
c.
One of my fav hills tummy fillers. Chooks in the trees..kids galore. Yummy food..Im biased cos it was a daily walk past at school but...Has a keep out facade which hides a hills gem
T. S.
Historic country Hotel in charming Aldgate Village." The Aldgate Pump Hotel, is named after a water well in the main street opposite the hotel. Installed by the then proprietor in 1864. The Aldgate Pump Hotel has a new proprietor which has made a huge difference. The hotel has had an expensive upgrade, from the kitchen through to their alfresco dining. We enjoyed a coffee with a very nice duck pate, accompanied with fresh made flat bread. The menu has some very nice dishes on offer. We shall return for dinner soon.
M. S.
Great pub food, cosy atmosphere, friendly staff. Food is average but the overall experience is worth it.
M. R.
Great with kids because of outdoor playground. Always have a huge variety of food options and specials!!! I had the zhuchinni flowers two ways now and have not been disappointed!!

A. M.
Only called in for a pint but was impressed by the staff and the ambience of the place, even in late afternoon. Outdoors is a good spot for watching the world go by (and the odd classic car!).
N. S.
Really great food, large portions and a very good kids and vegan range. Highly recommended.
J. E.

5 stars to the Aldgate Hotel for remaining as run down as it was in 1973. I loved it then and I love it more now!!
With the appalling "jet setter" renovations of the once fashionable dumps we used to call the Stirling Hotel, The Crafers Inn and the Uraidla Hotel, I've had a gutful! What's next? The Bridgewater Inn? Then possibly The Aldgate Hotel?
No! I won't stand for this Euro Chic progressive full Monty in your face modernism overhauls of our once much loved drinking grounds. I have boycotted the Stirling and the Crafers and the Uraidla. How dare they replace the 80 year old chunder and beer stained torn carpets while the Aldgate stands proud and retains those carpets??? The current light fittings are from the 1960's and that was a good time to buy light fittings that would last! And last they have! The Aldgate continues it's fine tradition of a toilet block running off a dimply lit alley way that reeks of urine soaked concrete going back nearly 100 years. This is the hotel I want to visit. And so it still remains. The Aldgate Hotel. Where front of house service was non existent, the food was pig swill and the atmosphere was so local you'd always hear "youmecarparknow!" echoing of it's peeling wall papered walls and salt damp footings.
So long as the Aldgate Hotel holds on to it's fine tradition of attracting cheap chateau cardboard box boozers from our purely local region and shunning those pretentious "city developer vermin dwellers", I shall remain a faithful and a loyal customer right up until they throw me out the back door after closing time, buckle me in my jalopy and tell me to take the back streets home. Good times! 5 stars!
M. M.
Have been returning there for great food for many years👍
A. G.
Food was great and came out quickly. Seemed to only be one person behind the bar so drinks were a little slow, but all was fine.
J. G.
Amazing restaurant food for pub prices. One of the best pubs I've ever been to.
C. B.
