Comments of The Durham Castle Arms
A. S.
Top notch hospitality, warm atmosphere and fantastic kitchen. The Durham is one of the best places in South Canberra to have a nice relaxing time
J. P.
Lovely spot for a meal out together - cosy intrior and good setup. Lovely staff who catered to dietary needs with great food enjoyed all-round
B. R.
The Durham is a good pub serving a range of beers beyond the bog standard stuff. One of the few, true pubs in Canberra. Put it on your pub crawl or stay longer! Cheers!
S. R.
We went there for New Year's Eve and made an advance booking thinking it would be packed. However, the place was mostly empty. Honestly, the food was too overpriced for the quality on offer. The chicken schintzel was quite disappointing. The mushroom sauce was underwhelming and too salty. The coleslaw was clearly prepped ages ago as it was pretty soggy and unappetising.
My friend still liked the buffalo wings; I found them pretty average. Ditto for grilled chicken.
Having said that, I will note that I was pleasantly surprised when they didn't charge us for the second glass of wine I ordered after I accidentally spilled the first one. That was nice of them (Only giving 3 stars because of this).
I liked the rustic decor and I suppose it's a good place for catching up with friends over drinks. But I will not recommend this place if you are looking for a decent place to eat and drink.

Awesome service and great food. Had a fun night at trivia with friends. Totally recommend for a good night out.

Durham never fails to impress. The last time I was in Canberra was around 2 years ago. I can’t remember the last time I was at the Durham but it’s always been somewhere I check out when I’m in town.
I returned to Canberra after being in a Japan for 18 months. The last time I had a schnitty was probably at least 18 months ago so I may have a skewed view. However, the Durhams schnitty lived up to expectations, it was delicious and was exactly what I wanted. Couple that with their excellent drinks list that includes local wines you really can’t go wrong for a pandemic lunch and end of days.
Do yourself a favour, if you’re in Canberra and would like a great pub meal. Head on in to the Durham in Kingston.

Spent St. Patrick's Day 2021 here. Been here twice now. A great English-style pub with Guinness on tap! The staff are welcoming and provide great service. Great pub food on the menu (I highly rate the Porterhouse steak and Bangers & Mash). Wonderful atmosphere inside and out. Live music, trivia nights, a lot going on. Did I mention they have Guinness on tap? Enough said.
I. D.
Rocked up after reading about this place on the Crafty Pint. Happy to accommodate a solo drinker/diner. Good selection of independent tap beers and knowledgable bar staff. Ordered the chimichanga special which was filling on a cold Canberra night. The rest of menu was fairly pricey but they do have decent specials. I haven't been to a pub in a long time which added a credit card surcharge... maybe this can be absorbed into the pricing in the future.
B. T.
Fantastic pub with a great aesthetic and beer selection. Parking can be annoying but that’s Kingston and not the pubs fault. Good food too!
L. H.
Decent pubs in Canberra are limited and this one hits the spot! Lovely and cosy and good selection of beers (including a delicious raspberry craft beer while I was here). Good food options on the menu, including vegetarian options and great staff who are accommodating of dietary requests such as vegan! The food quality itself is great, good pub food with decent portions and something for most - classics and varients such as eggplant parmas, and then lighter salad options. While I was here they were running a Seinfeld Trivia night which looked great too.
R. D. S.
This is the Canberra version of an old pub and it delivers on quirks, character and a laid- back, neighbourly vibe. The locals are welcoming and there are some interesting local craft beers on tap. Would have liked to see more local wines on offer, as the Canberra region has some good ones.
Music is awful!
N. D.
Very nice feel to this pub, wished I could have stayed for longer!
M.
Nice atmosphere and quite a cozy pub too. There are some great specials on the menu so check them out. It is pretty busy and a bit noisy after work so make sure to get there early!
C. B.
An English style pub in the heart of Kingston. Vibrant and fun, with a great selection of craft beers and delicious pub meals. The staff are super friendly and helpful. It just has a good feel to it.
K. J.
Good vibe. Friendly staff. Great beer and bar. Food generally good (parma very avg, wings n burger great). Would go again
I. M.
I'm a bit confused as to why previous commenters have said that the schnitzel was small, I bought one on Tuesday and it was huge- and I've seen a lot of big schnitzels in my time. The service was fast and the staff friendly. Will definitely be returning here and bringing some friends next time!
N. R.
We had a large team of hungry women (rugby players). We were easily accommodated, and the service was efficient. Food came out quickly, the orders correct and the food was great. Staff were friendly and allowed for split payments. Would highly recommend this venue.
T. j.
Great Simpson quiz night, tacos were yummy and a good selection of drinks. No complaints here. Staff were friendly and helpful too.
J. M.
Dropped in for a drink, ended up staying for lunch!
Old English style pub with quick service, friendly atmosphere and good food. Will be happy to visit again.
K. A.
We stopped here for a cocktail and dessert - an unusual choice for what looks like a very traditional pub inside but wow are we glad we did! We had the chocolate brownie with housemade icecream (pictured) which was decadent but also not too heavy. The star of the show was the cheesecake special, which was baklava inspired and absolutely DEVINE. Massive compliments to the chef on this one!
D. R.
Everything a pub should be.
With the warm tones and sticky floors of a traditional pub, and the modern touch of changing the taps weekly, this place is a riot.
Tuesday Trivia is a knock-out too, but good luck getting a table unless you book.
L. R.
The pub is almost there - vibe is great and drinks are what you need from a pub. But the food is average - everything is fried. Would be great if they could include a soup of the day or pot pie etc. Just something to break up the fried food! Will come back for drinks but not for dinner unfortunately.
D. B.
One of my favourite - and original - pubs in Canberra. Since the Wig and Pen closed down and the new boys on the block rolled up (Capital Brewing and Bentspoke) the Canberra beer scene has really taken off! But I had a nice pint of Speckled Old Hen here followed by a beautiful Russian Imperial Stout 10.5% (Bentspoke) so you have great choices and you can mix and match. Very knowledgeable bar staff. And excellent buffalo wings (not sure those chickens had happy lives so felt guilty). The salt and pepper calamari was also good - fewer ethical qualms! Highly recommended.
D. M.
Nice beer selection, especially liked a bitter ale from England, quiet, cozy, homey. Food is ok, prices average
J. B.
Visited with the wife on an early weekday lunch - place filled quickly with working crowd from 12.30pm. Food came hot and quickly - had the wagyu cheeseburger and porterhouse steak. Decent, but nothing to shout about. Air was also a tad musty having just opened for the day. 4 stars for the authentic Enlighs pub ambience what with the stags and all. I imagine the Arms to be a whole lot rollicking when evenings and the live band comes around. Plan to return again soon.
M. F.
Great atmosphere, Stellar food and Aussie craft beer on tap. What more can you ask for? Oh and amazing customer service coupled with amazing prices and deals. On Friday there is a “buy a main course, get an entree free”. I definitely recommend checking it out. Delicious burgers, wings, calamari and nachos. Do yourself a favour and be there this Friday night, I know I will!
C. H.
It's the best pub in town. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and amazing beer selection.
M. V.
Modelled after an old London pub, it usually has new beers every few weeks. The atmosphere is very relaxed and staff are nice. The food is also good.
Would recommend for larger work events or a Friday evening catch up with mates.
M. H.
When in Canberra we choose to head out to Kingston and dine in this fine Pub!
They offer a good selection of pub grub. Some fine looking desserts and a great atmosphere with plenty of seating.
But the big plus for me is the wide selection of beers on tap. The folks behind the bar know their stuff and it’s always a pleasure to try something new.
J. B.
Tonight was our first visit to this comfortable, friendly pub. The service was very good, the food was excellent. Great burgers and a superb scotch fillet, washed down with beer of which there is abundant variety. All in all a very pleasant night out!
A. M.
I had the best burger here recently, I was originally going to go to one of the usual places in Canberra for one but a mate talked up the burgers at the Durham so I figured I'd give it a go and I'm so glad I did. Yummo!!
It was so good, with home made patties and just the right amount of cheese, pickles and condiments.
The creamy English beers went down a treat with it as well 👌
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
C. S.
Great pub, comfortable atmosphere. My brother and I were down from Sydney and we just wanted a classic pub with good beer on tap and good food. We absolutely got what we envisioned. The craft beer is sensational, the vibes were all there and the food was unreal! Definitely sticking this one in the memory bank for future trips to the ACT. Good job lads!
D. D.
Amazing food and great atmosphere!
d. b.
Pretty average. Go next door to the Caribou, way better atmosphere.
*update: disappointing reply by the owner, understand they may not share the same opinion as a customer. Has nothing to do with respect, just an honest opinion.
K. B.
Very nice casual pub in the Inner South. The Durham has outlasted many of its competitors by sticking with a formula of reasonably priced drinks and good food served in a casual and very friendly atmosphere. The $10 weekday lunch specials are probably the best value in Canberra. There is plenty of seating both inside and out the front on Green Square. It has now re-opened following the COVID-19 lock down.
D. M.
It's a really nice hidden pub in Kingston. Meals are good, service is quick and people working there are nice. I had a very good schnitzel there. They also allow our group to play board games on Sunday afternoon.
J.
English pub with great dinners and mulled wine in winter. Generally very busy so recommend booking a table
K. S.
We have had a wonderful “out of isolation” night out at The Durham tonight. The lovely Ellie took great care of us and the food was generous and delicious. I loved my “Quaran-tini” cocktail and the craft beer was enjoyed my my husband. We will definitely be back and keep supporting this wonderful local pub.
C. B.
Still one of the best pubs in Canberra. It can get a bit busy at times but it's a great place to hang out and have a few drinks with mates. The range of beers on tap is exceptional and rotates regularly. Staff are friendly and know quite a lot about the beers they are serving. Try a burger, you won't be disappointed :)
T. R.
Great little pub tucked away in the back of Kingston nice vibe the staff are all friendly the music is nice but not to loud so you don't have to yell the food was quite nice. The people that frequent it as well all seemed like a good crowd I will definitely be going back there again!
m. h.
Generally what you would expect. Could do witha little sound dealing work to encourage conversation
L. L.
Great selection of beers on tap which change over time so there's always something interesting to try alongside the favourites. Interesting range of whiskies, mainly Scotch and Japanese. Cosy pub atmosphere and generous servings of pub grub. Can get crowded, so if you're planning an outing here, call for a reservation.
M. F.
Great place to go for a quality cheap meal in a cosy atmosphere. Extensive range of beer on tap and a large group dining in, which is always a good sign. Though I had a great burger, which was home made style, I am confident that from other meals I saw being delivered, that whatever you choose from the menu, will be a quality product. Pubs such as these are hard to come by these days, so do yourself a favour and give them a try. I was glad I did that's for sure!
A. T.
Just went for a few afternoon beers. Wasn't too slow despite a few Christmas parties being there. Beer was cold and the fish and chips were decent so no complaints from old Thommo.
J. V.
Cosy little pub. We had arrived at 3 pm, thinking we’d stay for a couple of hours and have an early dinner, but the kids meal prices put us off ($18.90), and we weren’t that impressed by the chips or garlic bread, so we ended up going home after a couple of drinks. I don’t think we’ll go back. There’s other pubs that suit us better close by. I’m sure it’s a great pub for those without kids tho!
A. G.
Really good spread of craft beers. The tap takeovers they do are always with great craft breweries. They even did a collaboration brew with Bridge Road Brewers (Green Square IPA) which was really tasty. It's always easy getting a beer because there seems to be enough staff on. It's situated in the corner of Green Square with surrounding grass area for kids.
H. C.
Great pub. Old English decor. Great vibes inside. Very cosy and welcoming. Definitely try a few of the beers they have on tap. They have great local brews, and a few international beers too. Recommend the tasting tray. Staff have a good knowledge of the beers. Great place to find a new favourite beer.
O. C.
Lives up to the English Pub style. It's generally quite full, so it gets pretty loud but if that's not a problem then you'll enjoy a meal here.
I had the special cassoulet on recommendation by the staff, and it was pretty good for a winter meal - hearty, warm, and filling!
K. M.
Great old-english style pub with a good array of locally brewed ales and stouts. Good choice if Scottish and Japanese whisky as well
J. C.
Super friendly place with the best selection of beers in Canberra. The taps are always changing over which means there is always an excuse to head back down to the pub. Meals have improved dramatically over the last couple of years with top quality steaks, schnitzels and burgers.
G. M.
Brilliant pints and football. Great staff
M.
The Durham is a classic style Pub that serves fairly priced food and drinks. They often have micro-brews on tap for those that like something unique.
The staff are all very friendly and accommodating.
My favourite thing about the Durham is that it doesn't get so loud inside that you have to scream for the person across from you to hear.
I regularly meet up with friends there and will continue to.
C. N.
I was therefor their Tuesday night special. I joined fifteen other guys for great food and drink. The steak and mushrooms was superb and the serving sizes were generous. The atmosphere was loud and upbeat. Can't wait for my next visit.
C. D.
This place has a great rotating beer selection with new beers arriving practically weekly. It's got an English themed decor which to some people comes across as grubby. But to me it adds character to the place. The steaks are really great (especially on a Monday where it's 2 for 1)
S. W.
Great personalised service from manager Adrian for our small group. Great food at good prices. 2 for price of 1 steak on Mondays. Unfortunately we got a couple of undercooked chicken kievs but Adrian did all he could to make teparation with alternate meals, free dessert tasting plates and live taken off the bill. Lovely and fun but relaxed old English pub decor and feel. Cosy end table/booth.
E. A.
Good beer, nice food
J. H.
A quality range of beers, always changing what's on tap. The food seemed pricey however the size and quality of the portions were worth every cent. Plenty of tables to sit and relax at but don't be expecting to watch the footy here this place is about the beer food and getting back to the way a pub should be.
c. m.
Best selection of beers in Kingston! Friendly staff. Food is quite nice but a little on the pricey side.
R. C.
A cosy spot to enjoy a few beverages and a lite meal.
S. D.
Great pub, one of the last real pubs left in Canberra with a great selection of tap beers and good value meals (especially at lunch). Beers rotate regularly and staff always happy to help you choose something different.
R. P.
So this pub is quite busy even during the week. It is a great place to go for an after work beer and if you like, order something from their daily special menu. An example is that on Thursdays you can get a Snitchel and drink for $10! A bargain! $10. What is there not to like? The only downside of the place is that it is very very noisy and if you want to impress a lady: good luck, because the two of you will be engaged in a screaming contest. I could only last for an hour and had to leave for the quiet of the suburban streets.
J. W.
Went to watch a mate play. Greater little music venue. Not the flashiest of place but would go back.
B. H.
A nice pub restaurant for hanging out and catching with friends or casual work function. I visited here before with friends for their parmigiana menu which was very good but doesn't seem to be offered anymore.
Recently I ordered one of their beer battered flathead (i.e. 'fancy' fish and chips) and found it pretty disappointing. It was very thick battered and overly oily in both taste and texture. The fries were also mediocre.
I don't recommend the flathead but I wouldn't mind trying their other dishes at this place if friends call for it.
M. W.
I was looking for a good Canberra pub and found the Durham Castle Arms. What an excellent find, good food, excellent atmosphere and a good selection of boutique beers.
We had the Mex burger, veg lentil burger and kids had lamb meatballs and mash,.
Mex burger was pretty good while veg burger was as ok as a lentil burger goes.
Kids meats were good and the accompanying ice cream was of good portion and qaulity.
I would highly recommend this pub to all who visit or live here.
41/2 star if I could give it.
Mark Williams.
D. B.
Classic pub in the old (better) area of Kingston. Has a fantastic selection of beers and whiskies. Really impressed with the food here. Battling it out with the asthetically-pleasing Kingston foreshore, this place knocks them out of the park with service, quality and price!
R. S.
Nice little English themed pub. Good food, Great beers, excellent staff. Good atmosphere. Outdoor seating options. (I miss the Irish pub that was next door)
T. R.
Great local pub with friendly staff.
N. W.
Just experienced the most unmemorable Sunday Roast ever, so sorry but true. Had to wait so long, meals came out at different times. The Roast beef didn’t have Yorkshire puddings, that’s not on. The beef whilst plentiful was pretty ordinary and fatty. The pear salad was awful, fish was greasy and the egg plant parmigiana was sickly. Very under staffed, slow and the waiter did apologise for the delay but we thats not the real point, the food just disappointed. However the customer service from Adrian the manager was excellent and very appropriate, often good customer service is hard to come by and Adrian demonstrates a great awareness of the situation and offered a resolution going forward. Thanks Adrian
N. C.
I went along to a board game meetup group. The pub itself seemed ok and fairly empty on a Sunday afternoon. 4½ dollars for a small coke, take that how you will. The food a few other people ordered came quickly and looked like pretty standard pub fair.
I. J.
Had Southern fried chicken with coleslaw and chips with gravy. Absolutely loved it and less than 20 bucks. Friendly bar staff. Icy cold beer. Great experience.
D. O.
Great for a drink and food. Affordable chef special every day.
H. Z.
Standard pub in old Kingston. Has an old school sticky floor type of feel to the place. Is popular with the locals serving up some ok pub food. Nothing fancy here but nothing too bad about the place either.
D. S.
Best value t-bone steaks in Canberra - perfectly cooked with great mushroom sauce for $24. Plus nice craft beers on tap and in the bottle. Service is a bit hit and miss sometimes but the staff are friendly.
I. G.
We love it here! The beers are just suburb, super helpful staff who are passionate about what they have on tap. A really great menu too. Couldn't recommend this place enough.
D. W.
Friday lunchtime Burger and Beer
It's a bit busy on Friday lunchtime so recommend getting in early.
Good options depending on tastes in both categories (beers and burgers).
They also do a salmon burger (which I enjoyed) and a vegetarian burger which looked good on the menu, but can't comment on taste.
C.
Favorite pub in Canberra. Meal nights really frequently, beer changes frequently. Love my thursday $10 schnitty.
Have great seating, but can get crowded. If you want a booth or a cute secluded table for a date I recommend giving them a call.
Outdoor area is great in summer, can even bring the doggo.
Whilst the beer isn't as cheap as some of clubs etc, the food is great even on specials night and there's always something new to try.
L. M.
We go here regularly because we can have a meal and a drink while giving our dogs an outing. The food is good and because we are so busy talking, we don’t know how good the service is. It can’t be too bad because my son is always hungry.
M. B.
One of my favourite Canberra pubs. This visit they had Fullers ESB and London Porter on tap. Yum.
A. J.
2 for 1 steaks is pretty solid. Beer on tap has some good variety. If I lived closer I'd be there more often
s. k.
Best pub in Canberra. One of the only places with a decent selection of beers and a rotating roster. Great food, great vibe. Little out of the way but worth a drive out.
D. W.
Great burger at variable prices depending on who serves you (Wed special). Steaks are also nice but the Thursday $15 special is just steak & chips - no salad - unlike the $10 schnitzel special the same night. So the food is nice & the service mostly friendly and the prices wander around.
R. C.
Great little pub, good beer selection, but is a little pricey. Food is fantastic too!
If you are in the area, get down and have a pint!
M. P.
Very nice place, old pub, big space and it gets full. I went on a Thursday night and had a good time. The food is delicious, super traditional. Highly recommended
M. K.
Great food, great beer (not that I drink), great service and aidrian and all the staff are extremely welcoming and knowledgeable
P. S.
The Durham is the BEST place to go for craft beers in Canberra! They host lots of tap takeovers and put in a big effort to change their beer selections regularly.
T. C.
Such a great vibe, awesome beers on tap and the evening trivia is fantastic!
B. J.
Everyone needs a local. If I lived in Kingston, The Durham could be my local. It feels like a pub. It has a good selection of good beers on tap, it has comfortable booths, and it has locals who call in for a pint and a chat. It's cool.
K. H.
Saved my bacon after making space for 17 guests at short notice!! Food was fantastic! They had a great deal (entree free with every main meal) fantastic service!! Highly recommend!
S. M.
Often a pretty good taplist of craft beers and a solid pub menu that hasn't changed in a decade or more.
T. B.
Visited Sun 8 Nov. Great old pub. Great selection of beer. Adrian does a great job there.
D. C.
Great rotating selection of beers makes it fun to come back to.
K. M.
Go here for trivia. Amazing service, all the staff are really friendly and happy to help you out. Trivia is a lot of fun and the food is great too!
B. K.
Good food, good service and good vibe considering the current restrictions! The current menu is simple but good - lots of classics. Only downside is they were missing vegetarian options.
W. W.
Friendly staff, decent food, nice atmosphere. Constantly changing craft beer selection which is a definite plus.
J. G.
Great old pub atmosphere, friendly staff and really good food. Loved it. Will have to go back next time I'm in Canberra.
M.
A nice, chilled out pub, with a constantly evolving range of beers on tap. Good pub grub as well!
B. E.
Twelve taps, 90% craft, and a couple dozen more in bottles. A fine craft beer bar and a must-visit if you find yourself in the Australian capital. Knowledgeable staff and friendly samples as well.
I. S.
Nice cosy atmosphere. Can be a bit noisy when busy. Note they serve craft beers not English as youd expect for a semi English pub. Typical pub food snitchel was ok.
D. C.
Always an interesting selection of draught beers and friendly faces behind the bar. Food also very good, especially the curries
M. A.
Best pub in Canberra. Alway have a great selection of new and interesting beers on tap, the burgers are good and the feel of the place is awesome.
G. U.
Great ambience, good range of on tap ales and ciders.I'll be back!
E. W.
Good food, good beer
M. M.
English style pub with good food and beer on tap. Monday is two-for-one steak night, and there are board games twice a month on Sunday afternoons.
S. S.
Lots of old school charm, a great seasonal beer selection and outdoor seating. -1 star for the smell...can be a bit overpowering in an uncrowded afternoon session or at the regular trivia nights.
K. E.
After my last post some time ago , I am more than pleased to announce that such a great turnaround in the quality of food and excellent customer service with a chef that knows how to cook to perfection I enjoined a magnificent meal, and I believe 5 stars is one short and will recommend the Durham arms to everyone who wants a grand meal at a most reasonable price.
R. d. L.
Best range of craft beers on tap. Beers are rotated regularly so you can always find something new. Grab a paddle and you can sample three at a time!
B.
The Durham is my favourite pub
J. H.
I like coming here because they have a good range of beers which they rotate through. Always something new to try.
B. A.
Good beer
P. D.
Nice homely pub with a great beer selection. Also enjoyed the food.
Not a trendy pub, but a comfy laid back one
J. M.
Love the vibe of the restaurant. Food on the pricy side but it tasted great. The loaded fries are amazing. More than enough for 2 people!
J. N.
Monday night parmys, these guys know there stuff.
2 for 1 night good price great parmy
R. H.
Great atmosphere brilliant beers and decent food makes it a great choice every time.
M. H.
Runs a fun trivia night. Staff are friendly and food is delicious. Decent original selection of craft beers.
A. S. (. f.
Lose a point coz the food is terrible. The nachos were disgusting, with what looked and tasted like liquid cheese from a bottle. Drinks were sensational, but that is the only thing propping this joint up.
M. F.
Decor was great and service was happy and unobtrusive. Lost marks for no clear guidance regarding their social distancing measures during COVID19 times.
J. B.
Best pub in the inner south if not all of Canberra. Great food, superb staff and the best beer selection in Canberra.
W. M.
The food was hot and tasty. Just a pity that there was no mash available on a Sunday lunchtime to go with the "sausage and mash".
D. L.
Amazing beer selections and friendly staff. Seriously need to get their kitchen in order though. Only here for the beer.
G.
Good food, great deals. Wish they had a website or way of looking at the menu before hand. Live music can be too loud sometimes
M. T.
Great pub, nice atmosphere and layout.
Food is delicious and reasonable (especially the various daily deals), varied a bit in quality though.
O. J.
Great pub, wide variety of drinks, a good place to get schnit faced with a decent piece of chicken, good live music (mostly), friendly staff and good patrons to chat with :-) *bring back the darts
a. m.
Good beer list and food is what you're after at a pub. Prices reasonable too, cannot fault
D. C.
Nice friendly place. Good food and atmosphere.
A. T.
Great craft beer pub. Food is awesome. Family friendly. What more can you ask for?
G.
Great pub atmosphere inside but pretty yuk outside. Good food menu but a little pricey. Nice staff and fast service. Weeknight.
J. T.
A good range of reasonably-priced pub grub holding up a quirky, diverse range of beers. Make sure you book for Tuesday night trivia
E. S. D.
The place has an interesting character to it. It is very comfy with great atmosphere especially in the booth section. There are plenty of choives to choose from and on top of that, there are also special items. The parmy was lovely though it could do a bit less salt :). try the parmasaurus there and be inducted to the wall of cheese on succesful completion of the challenge. The staff were very friendly when I called and whrn I visited.
J. M.
