Comments of Hope & Anchor Tavern
C. B.
Staff friendly and helpful even though very busy. Food served promptly and delicious. I ordered beef cheeks, slow cooked in red wine sauce for 16 hours, very tender. Tried 2 locally brewed beers which are recommended.
P. B.
My wife and I had dinner there this evening (6/7/21) and really enjoyed our meals. My wife had eye fillet mingon which she found very tender. I had the stuffed chicken breast which was beautifully cooked.
The pub itself is fascinating with an amazing display of artefacts on display, including Captain Cooks lapel epaulettes and Lord Nelson epaulettes.
Overall recommend the pub for an excellent meal in a fascinating place.
H. G.
Beautiful place and a must see when in Hobart. Service is good but food is average
J. B.
Really friendly staff, great food and service. The upper level of the pub has rooms full of historical artefacts, including war memorabilia and antiques.
L. T.
So much history but a really great present day pub. Friendly staff, awesome food.
Just a great place in the middle of Hobart.
m.
I ordered a medium-well cooked steak. It's just perfect and excellent how and what I want.
They used very good cut of meat, it just taste very very nice and juice, the pepper sauce is very fresh and beautiful. The chip us crispy outside and soft in side. The salad is very fresh as well.
The steak meal is much much much better than a lot of bar in Hobart. Definitely recommend everyone.
Z. I.
Best pub I’ve been to!
Travelling from Melbourne to Hobart and stumbled upon this place. Beautiful atmosphere and amazing antique decor… like a museum! Would definitely be a regular if I was a local.
M. B.
Fantastic dinner , cooked to perfection. Many thanks to the staff for organising a free desert for our anniversary. Will be recommending this place
M. J. H.
Excellent pub meal and superb location, lots of history in the pub. Staff was nice and welcoming. We were with a large group, and were happily surprised how fast we were served our meals. The specials were well priced. Happy to come back with our family.
D.
Very authentic historical pub with beautiful food to choose from on the menu. Check out the museum and the history of the 200 year old pub. Thanks guys fir a fabulous lunch.
R. S.
Beautiful old pub with so many artifacts to look at. Great food at a good price. Good vibe. Happy staff. If ever in Hobart again, will definitely go to Hope & Anchor.
S. M.
Beautiful old pub, great atmosphere and has some great antiques in the upstairs area. Food was excellent! They only had 3 floor staff on between the bar and restaurant but they did a fantastic job and enjoyed a laugh with us too. We didnt have a dinner reservation but was able to be fitted in. Definitely have a meal here when your in hobart.
S. N.
What amazingly helpful staff. Fully reserved but we were just after some Hobart oysters and a drink. So we were squeezed it feed and watered. Thankyou to the two amazing female wait staff. Two extremely happy patrons with oysters (natural of course) and beautifully cooked salt and pepper calamari ( might even be the best calamari I have had...if not the best it would be up there) I wish we were staying longer as I would love to visit again. A beautiful crackling fire and in the front room an extremely romantic location.... We loved our visit. Thank you.
K. V.
The Hope and Anchor is Tasmania's oldest pub, established in 1807. It hosts about 4 fireplaces and about as many great rooms and bars within the pub itself. The food is very good, the plates offer a big meal.
A. S.
Enjoyed having a drink with the bride in this establishment and found Captain Bligh's Colonial Ale a great beer! There's some serious history in this building and I bet if the walls could talk they would have some fascinating stories to tell. Well worth a visit for a drink while in the area!
C. l. G.
The staff were friendly and competent, and the meals were decent pub grub. Luckily the light was dim as the carpet in the dining room looked alarmingly grubby. Well, it's a pub.
T.
Had the eye fillet minion ..... cooked to perfection! .... absolutely delicious. Service and atmosphere are spot on. Just don't play with the fire 🤣
R. T.
Learned some interesting historical trivia over a good selection of drinks, and there's a museum on site that's very worth checking out. The staff are lovely.
G. H.
An oldie but a golden. Had a Blight Black Lager to clean the palette. Pub lunches available with a good selection of beverages
G. 4.
Beautiful old pub in 5 star condition . Just slowish bar service , otherwise we would have stayed and drank truck loads more 🤸♂️🤣🎬
K. M.
Went here for dinner twice during our holiday. Open fireplace, Lovely food, nice beers and fantastic staff. Make sure you check out upstairs. Absolutely beautiful old building inside and out. Was our favourite pub in Tasmania 😊
P.
Great meals, helpful and fun staff. Steak is the way to go. Good parmis and burger. Worth the money, good prices
M. B.
Walked past and saw Oyster Bar - had to test this out. Despite seeing tables reserved, we promised to be quick as 7pm reservations we're ahead of us walking in. Beautiful Tassie oysters, a glass a bubbles, salt and pepper calamari all served promptly. Drop by, staff very accommodating. Will dine again. If it's chilly outside there's beautiful tables inside near open fire.
C.
Good traditional Aussie pub with friendly service and good food.
R. H.
Excellent food, great range of beers on tap. As the oldest pub in Australia it has all the memorabilia one would expect and a real wood fire. Obviously lots of people agree. So do you self a favour and book. Even really early on a Tuesday night it was a fluke to get a table.
a. a.
I went there this afternoon. I had chicken parme, chips and salad. It was awesome.
I like them.
C. d.
Good food but it might be better to ask people if they want the garnish on the chips
A. T.
If you must visit only a few Pubs in Hobart you must visit this one. The real deal. The timber. The fireplace. The Deer. The history and the beer. The Deer n the Beer.
K. K.
Fantastic ambiance.... Truly well thought out as authentic sailors pub.... Really well appointed rustic atmosphere. Great prices ... Great cider.
P. &. S. W.
Good a old fashioned pub with good food, good beer, good service and great atmosphere. Good for the soul.
M. K.
The oldest pub in Australia.
I had the best burger, best beef cheek and whisky.
The bar staff was extremely friendly too.
B. D.
The chips were excellent and the chicken snizchel was yummy with the mushroom gravey and the salad was delicious
M. P.
A very ordinary dining experience. Bizarrely we had to order our food the day before. Our main courses arrived within five minutes of our booking time. With some of our group at the bar getting drinks and a couple still to arrive the food was just placed at the empty places on the table to be swapped around later. When ordering desert some had to give a first and second preference as wait staff didn't know which of the desert menu items where available. Food was of reasonable pub standard. Staff where abrupt and disorganised. I wouldn't say the place is to be avoided, but it's not on my list to go back to.
V. B.
Have some unique beers. Nice historic atmosphere.
j. w.
Fantastic food and service. Great place to visit very interesting. Had a lovely time
D.
Lovely old pub, staff are friendly and welcoming. I had the burramundi and chips, very fresh and highly recommended. Felt like I was back in an English pub with the fire going, good atmosphere
and friendly locals.
S. P.
Food was good. A little pricey but I suppose its leaning towards the tourists not locals. $12 for a small wine glass of spiced rum.......... closed very early for a Sat night.
J. O.
Beautiful meal, great, friendly service, and awesome live music
T. H.
Oldest pub in Australia. Good selection of beers and pub food at reasonable prices.
C. Q.
Great history you would not believe. Exhibits as any museum would love.
Z. S.
Exceptionally atmospheric. Good food — not fancy, exactly, but put together with attention to detail. Good service.
J. A.
Food was yum but limited beer and whisky selection. Service could have been better too as only one person taking orders and was stressed.
With the history this venue could be so much more!
S. B.
We visited Hope and Anchor on 2 occassions whilst holidaying in Hobart between 13th and 21st Dec 2020. It declares it is the longest licensed hotel in Australua since 1807. On the first visit, we attended without a booking, but Jane was able to seat us without hesitation. The atmosphere is lovely, like a walk back in time. The meals were fabulous and well proportioned. The entree of cob loaf was oh so yummy. Having had a fabulous evening we went again. For the second visit we made a reservation and took a 3rd person with us who had a walker. They had taken note of the information when booking and gave us a table that was very suitable and kept the walker out of the way of other diners and staff. It was very busy with a large group of around 20 near us. To her credit Jane managed the evening very well. She suggested if we were ready to order, she would take it before the the large group were ready, so as not to be inconvenienced with a very long wait. Yes again the meals were sumptuous. Desserts were fabulous. Alas no Cob loaf that night. Meals 10/10, Service 10/10, Prices 10/10, Ambience 10/10. Will be our regular go to whenever in Hobart. Congratulations team Hope and Anchor.
c. n.
OMG this was the best pub grub ever . And the staff were so delightful . I had the corned beef at the waitress recommendation ,and it was amazing . We will be back
M. D.
Been here a couple of times now. Oldest constantly licenced pub in Australia, 1807. Great pub feed & plenty of drinks to choose from.
V. D.
Great food, great ambience and staff !
If only the female ghost eould stop playing with the fire ! ( it's what we were told)they also have a pretty special museum on the second floor. Go vheck it out ! You won't be sorry.
K. C.
Old decor and great food. Porterhouse steak was really cooked to perfection. Lamb roast was good too.
R. B.
Wonderful food and atmosphere. Good service.
L. R.
Beautiful pub with lots of historic artifacts, high quality and good value meals with good beer specials
S. H.
Fun, historic pub. Great staff, patrons and beer
c. s.
Highly recommend booking the Upstairs dining for those looking for a good meal without the hubub of downstairs. Great food and a private bar also.
D. N.
We stumbled upon this place while trying to find a place to eat.... This quaint bar/restaurant was a gem. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. The garlic bread loaf had melted cheese inside. It was delicious and highly recommend. Most original and best garlic bread I've had in a while. We dug into that bread so quick I didn't even have time to take a photo of it. The food is also well cooked and tasty... Highly recommended.
L. G.
Went in for dinner on a cold evening. They had cozy fires in the grates to complement the hardy delicious food. Staff were very nice and attentive despite it clearly being a busy night and our group having no booking. Highly recommend for a yummy relaxed meal
A. W.
We were looking for a place to eat that served simple healthy food with old world charm. We got both. This hotel is supposed to be the oldest in Australia and was built in 1807. It had a beautiful open fire in the front dining room and loads of historical memorabilia on the walls. The service was outstanding and the food delicious. Would thoroughly recommend both the roast lamb and pan-seared chicken breast. Well worth the visit.
T. W.
This is a great place and one of the longest run pubs in Australia. The food is amazing, we both had fish (salmon and flounder). Both were cooked perfectly. The staff are very friendly and happy to help. I really appreciated that they checked on our meal after we took our first few bites.. I highly recommend this as you can easily have a nice dinner out for under $100 including a few drinks.
M. M.
Best feed in Tassie. Ice cold beers. Best staff
L. H.
Wow, what a find! Gorgeous pub/museum - lots of fabulous memorabilia around the place; old photos, farm gadgets, kitchen bits and pieces and working fireplaces. The food is a winner here ~ honest and ample pub food. We ordered a steak and the beef cheek - couldn't finish them ~ delish! Service friendly and efficient and prices very reasonable! Loved it!
A. H.
My flathead tails were small (for the price) compared to others I've had, but served with generous, nice chips and standard pub salad. My wife had a half portion chicken schnitzel which was plenty for her. Her LLB though tasted terrible, as though it had been made with soda water. A younger staff member made a better one. The table had an oily mark on it when we sat down. A bit pricey for standard pub food.
Z.
Cosy atmosphere decorated like my Great Auntie’s house! Meals were nice and very large serves. Service was great and very friendly. Very family friendly environment as our baby crawled everywhere while we ate.
R. F.
What a surprise. This place can look a bit gloomy on the outside but was a real experience on the inside. We ordered the standard bar meal and was very pleased by the quality of the food and the quantity. I haven't enjoyed wedges so much in years. Great value for money and the staff were the most pleasant group I have dealt with in a long time, they couldn't do enough for us and were very friendly and approachable. The place was very warm on what was probably the coldest night in Hobart. Well done.
K. P.
Food is amazingly good. We had the oysters and pork belly. For main the beef cheeks and lamb chops. All excellent. What I was most impressed by was that even though it was really busy our dinner was served quickly. The bar has so much history. On Fri and sat nights has a great crowd with live music.
S. W.
Good food at reasonable prices. A little cramped but generally a comfortable setting for a drink and meal.
A. M.
Wouldn’t recommend, the service was shocking, it was like we were interrupting. When asked for a table for 2, there was no response, the staff member just put 2 menus on a table. Same with paying, all he said was “$80” and “would you like a receipt?”. Didn’t ask how our meals were or wished us a nice night. The food was decent size and came out quickly. Nice anterior but I wouldn’t return
O. T.
Very nice small pub. Has back rooms and a beer garden. Decor and ambiance is very fitting for the location. The staff are friendly and the service is fast.
Food is pretty good with your standard pub meal menu (Fish and Chips, Chicken Parmi, Steak etc.). Food pricing is about average for city prices. You can get a schooner for $5 which is really quite decent.
M. S.
This is a very rustic place and one of the oldest attractions of hobart. The place has a very nice bar and a good selection of wines. It is a must see and one of the oldest pubs in Australia started in 1807, the place has wide selection pub food.
C. M.
Beautiful place with lots of cool history. Went here for dinner the other night as it had good reviews and was definitely not disappointed.
Though apparently they close food at 8 normally, they kept the dinning room open for us to eat at 8:30 (I let them know ahead of time by making a reservation though).
We were served very well by a great wait staff who were attentive but also good to chat to as well. The food was simply delicious, we had the flounder and the crispy skin salmon and the calamari. Paired it nicely with a great white wine and enjoyed the cute street view out the window by our table. After dinner the waitress offered to take out photo for memories and let us wander around the different rooms looking at al the cool old stuff even though everyone had left at this point.
All in all the meal cost us about $90 for both of us which I think is actually pretty good for what we got (2 drinks each, 2 mains and a starter). Would definitely recommend as a special meal in the dining room or just to grab a drink downstairs.
A. W.
Very warm and inviting atmosphere. Lovely friendly waitress. Good old fashioned roast and the highlight was the hot buttered rum.
T. H.
The food was nice enough but I was a bit concerned when the waitress told me to hold onto my fork from the entrees for the main. A slight quibble though. The bugs were quite nice, the steak cooked as ordered and quite tender, and the the chips were great.
T. B.
A fantastic pub full of character with great meals. Don't miss it if you go to Hobart.
C. K.
Great historic hotel to visit in Hobart
l. s.
Beef cheeks were delicious!! Staff were very kind and polite. Meals came quickly!
K. S.
Very cheeky old pub, real fire.
Check out the original bars and function room upstairs
G. G.
Nice quick tasty meal, oldest pub of hobart
L. S.
Oldest pub in Australia
Great roast lamb lunch
M. R.
A very friendly place to go if you are after a cold drink. Food is available but it is more restaurant grade compared to a pub. The beer selection is not to bad, not a huge craft beer offering on tap but they have a well stocked fridge
A. A.
Very cute pub with great service and cozy feel. We only had an afternoon pint so I can comment on the food, but the menu looked like standard pub food. Didn't get a chance to head out to the beer garden yet, so will definitely be back.
K. B.
Food has been great every time. We always order a half Parma. I don't know how people get through a whole one! Great old traditional pub feel and the upstairs function space is very interesting indeed!
K. M.
Beautiful old pub waitress was fantastic only thing that spoiled our visit was walking in when the doors opened for business to 2 screaming boys about 12 playing at the pool table. I generally love kids but these boys were loud rude and bad mouthed alot of swearing and no manners at all, could not wait to get into the dining room to get away from them.
S. Z.
The food was fine, maybe not as good as we expected for the price, they had only one server and a lot of people so cant really rate the service. Everything was a bit underwhelming and they have a really small menu.
I. L.
Great food. Amazingly helpful friendly staff. Nice atmosphere (especially in the little room near the front). Steaks are cooked to perfection, and their chips are the best in Hobart! :D
N. B.
Well priced food, lunch specials excellent.
J. C.
Decent pub. Expected more being a historic place. Bit of a standard hotel once you’re inside. Wish there was more history on the walls.
Guinness was excellent, though.
C. B.
After beating the pavers along the Hobart foreshore and reviewing what I consider overpriced venues, I stopped in at the Hope and Anchor. Oysters were great, price was great and staff were very friendly. Second time I've visited this little pub and it caters for locals and visitors. I'll be back
D. P.
One of the oldest pubs in Australia and it has kept it's original charm.
S. G.
great food, good beer and friendly staff!
L. S.
This is one of the best old style pub lve been to, great food and service
G. M.
Amazing food and lovely atmosphere with open fires and rustic decor. Also have some great lunch deals. Definitely worth getting a meal or a drink
V. W.
My husband and i wandered into the Hope and Anchor today Anzac day and were impressed by the girls running the bar they were really lovely in that it was very busy and they had smiles on their faces and were very attentive to all customers . Too often you go into a bar where it seems to be an effort to smile and not feel like your putting the staff out by being there
so great job today ladies you did a brilliant job
we were the ones drinking the xxxx Gold
thanks for a great day
B. H.
Lovely service, good Aussie pub music in the background, nice cosy dinning room.
We ordered entirely from the dinner specials:
Crumbed lamb cutlets with a mint gravy (delicious, generous serving of cutlets and fresh juicy vegies as an accompaniment).
Southern fried chicken (juicy tender chicken strips in a tasty crumbed coating, served with a slaw in a nice creamy dressing, a million wedges and a tasty home-made ranch sauce).
finally a Trifle (made with frozen berries which included chewy blueberries and a custard that tasted a bit strange). We sent the Trifle back but it certainly did not ruin our experience and we would definitely come again. I can certainly recommend the food, with a possible exception of the desserts.
G. D.
Jess and 1 other did an amazing job considering they were working the bar and restaurant on their own as well as stairs for ordering. Food was also fabulous ( beef cheek and mega schnitty). Good job girls
R. B.
Excellent food for large or small groups.
Great drinks selection with local beers on tap.
Great atmosphere
Traditional old Hobart pub.
J. G.
Nice food great staff. Keep coming back so it must be good.
c. d.
It is best place I have came across in Hobart...Just fall in love with it. It is warm n beautiful with a lot of beer options. This pub had just celebrated its 210th Birthday.
B. W.
The beer is cold and the service friendly. I like this place. Welcoming crowd.
V. r. S.
Wonderful place with a history add to it ! Have a sip of win or a glass of beer with delicious food .😁
L. G.
Didn’t have a booking but on a busy night they fit us in. Staff were so helpful and welcoming. Food was delicious! Fire place amazing. Will definitely come back.
M. B.
Still the best old school pub in Hobart. Great food, great sailing yarns, a fantastic museum and of course... Pints.
D. D.
Visited a couple of times now. Good pub food at affordable prices. Prompt and friendly service. An interesting piece of Hobart history.
M. W.
Classic old pub with good selection of beers, lively staff, clean and friendly.
m.
Sweet Helpful Staff. Great for drinks, lunch and diner. Nice sunny area out the back to grab some fresh air. You can't fault the Hope and Anchor. 5 Starjumps from me.
K. D. S.
Had a great night. Good food and nice people
P. L.
It's a traditional pub, it's not a traditional pub, it's the oldest continuously licensed venue in the country, it is many things. Affectionately known to Hobartians as "The Hopeless", a genuine institution whose few shortfalls are offset by its history. A genuine must visit at least once.
note: due to current construction projects nearby, don't expect to get promptly served on a Friday afternoon unless you're wearing a flourescent jacket.
J. S.
Great meal here. Steak and veggies. Very yummy indeed. Great ambience of ye olde Englishe dark wood and a roaring log fire.
S. W.
Top food at the oldest pub in Australia. Great armosphere and the wooden carved mermaid in the public bar is beautiful.
V. R.
Nice old pub. Everyone having a sing-along to Don McLean. Was good.
M. E.
Has a pool table and plenty of drink choices. It's a tavern with a lot of local history, worth a visit! The fire was going when we arrived which was a welcome sight.
C. S.
Beautiful staff, delicious meal. Loved it!
P. M.
An incredible place with an awesome amount of history and paintings full stop the current service left a lot to be desired under the current management. The food was excellent with very large portions.
L. C. (.
Very nice atmosphere, awesome food, massive schnitzels which were amazing, definitely deserves more customers and support
R. B.
Great meals and great atmosphere. The upstairs area is a true museum and a step back intime, very special. The Staff are amazing. Thankyou looking forwardto my next visit.
P. R.
Have been a few times - excellent atmosphere, great service and food. Will return.
Thanks also go to the staff, Robert in particular, for being so honest in recovering and returning my lost piece of jewellery. Five stars:-)
H. J.
Awesome pub; piece of australian history and staff are hektic!
L. S.
Really nice old pub with fireplace and friendly staff
b. o.
Pub is really interesting. Make sure you have a peek upstairs, lots of nick nacks and history. Beer selection is pretty bad and the music was absolutely terrible.
K. C.

Great food! Big portions which was great, and the lady running the bar that night was really friendly. Will be back!
c. g.
Very friendly staff, good pub food, amazing colonial dining rooms upstairs. The place is a bit worn out.
R. Y.
I had a beautiful evening here with my family that I hadn't seen in a long while! Friendly staff, delicious meals and great atmosphere!
R. S.
Average. For the oldest pub in Australia, it was very average food and atmosphere.
R. K.
Yummy pub food. Prices were reasonable. Service was great. Looking forward to my next visit
A. W.
Nice pub in a central location. Decent selection of beers and ciders. Cosy wood panelled decor and usually good classic music.
T. N.
Had my daughters family 18th dinner here Food was ok not the greatest the staff looked and ackted like they didn’t want to be there and when asked for some plates to share the cake with all I got were napkins hmmmm so yeah not the best
J. d. L.

Lovely place and food was wonderful and good prices too
B. M.
Tavern quite nice . Meals were just. Staff ( she ) was very good but very busy.
J.
Great meal, great service and cold beer what else do you want
C. E. (. E. D. L.
Adequate pub, just not my scene. $9.50 beers were solidly at odds with the service and the tap beer list.
R. W.
Most probably the oldest continous hotel in hobart perhaps even tasmania. Decor has re-captured that colonial atmosphere. Meals very good and reasonably priced.
R. M.
Atmosphere and great meals and great value for money . Would go back time and time again. Table service was excellent. Switched on staff.
N. B.
If you love meat, you can't beat their beef check, it melts in your mouth.😊
T. F.
Good simple, cheap pub food. Great atmosphere and nice wood fire on a very cold rainy night.
W. P.
An expected surprise. Saw this place from the street. No online research, just thought I should go. Friendly staff, history on the walls. The place is awesome :)
