Very unique place, not too busy when we were there at 8.30pm on a Thursday. The dioramas were amazing. Very cool. And the service and food were great. Very attentive. The spiced cauliflower steak was impressive, and just shows what you can do with a simple vegetable. Worth a visit.

Food was good. We ordered both plates as in photos, just right for 2 people. Why 4 stars, place was cramped, which was expected on a Friday night. But when the lady delivered the food to us, she did not offer extra plates (obviously my friend and I will be sharing). Also given the fact that we are eating, a gesture to find us a seat would have been nice.

Cool bar... Cosy, vintage 70's 80s Italian lounge, go to the back area. Baby grand piano too ... Don't follow Google map, Samuel Lane is incorrect.

Interesting atmosphere with lots of stuffed animals in cases. Lunch special which includes a drink is good value for $20. Today it was fish and chips. I tried the flat steak which was excellent and cooked just right. One small gripe was that the lights were so low that I had to use the flashlight on my phone to read the menu.

Great set up. We had the rib eye to share and the taste was delicious charcoal that goes so well with red meat done well. Their take on the wine list is quite unique and very interesting. Would recommend. Dont forget to study the taxidermy along the wall

This is really a 3.5. The ambience is great and the alcohol is inexpensive. Only minus is the brownie we got didnt have enough ice cream to last. I also wished the brownie was soft and easier to eat. You'll prob want to share half/half with someone. On the plus side, it was very easy to order using your phone and they come to your table for drinks so no need to go up to the bar.

Super cool place , The fit out is amazing love the exhibits. The only issue was the food. let down. For the price we will not be back unfortunately. We ordered Spencer Gulf Prawn Cocktails $30 each was ok. Went to order 2 x AXM Dry Age Rib Eye 500G $79 told not avaliable but have the 1 kg for $110. Ok it is what it is. I ordered Wildness Beef Eye Fillet 200G x 2 $46 and was so very disappointing no way they where 200G. Also ordered Shoestring Chips $10 that where cold I think must have been sitting waiting for the steaks to be done. Customer service was ok. Not great overall a disappointing food experience for such an amazing place.

Been to this place three times now. The lunchtime deal is amazing. Good service also. Ideal for group bookings as they allow split bills. I particularly enjoyed the chicken parma and eggplant chips.

We had our Christmas lunch here last week and I cannot rave enough about the service! All the staff (including Chris, Francois & most especially Kirsty) went above and beyond to ensure we had a fabulous time. The food was scrumptiousness personified and so much effort was made to accommodate our dietary needs. The atmosphere was fun and quirky. We will most definitely return to experience again. p.s. the tassy champers was delish.

Neat vibe and good happy hour that goes until 6.30pm. The design inside was pretty amusing. Good spot for after work drinks or if you’ve got a crowd. Didn’t have any food, but it looked like decent pub food and there’s nightly specials.

I hosted a Christmas Party here and it was fantastic experience. We had a banquet and there was a great variety of dishes for guests to choose from if they didn't like certain things. The venue also caters for all dietary requirements and can create equally good alternatives that will please everyone. I personally couldn't fault any of the dishes. They had a great balance of textures and flavours and all the meat dishes were cooked to perfection being tender and juicy. The service was also great. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. Overall, I heard nothing but praise from my guests about the food and service and so I personally have nothing but praise for this restaurant and highly recommend them

Lovely atmosphere. We went on a night when there was a singer playing the piano and it gave the place a great vibe. I love sitting amongst the "exhibits" and discovering new things I haven't before. This venue has a bit of fun and life in it rather than just loud intoxicated people and it's great for a catch up drink with friends.

We had our staff end of year lunch here recently and as a large group (25 people) were looked after amazingly - mostly due to the event organising that happens before you arrive so the team are ready for you. Food was really good, generous mains and they catered for our (many and varied) intolerance's and allergies. We stayed on after for drinks and the staff made sure they had another table set up for us. Was a great experience and made my role as host very easy.

Came here with some friends for early pre dinner drinks. It was quite early so there were only a few other tables occupied but that suited us so we could chat and actually hear each other 😄 I imagine it would fill later in the night. Nice bar staff and a good variety on the drinks menu. The cocktails were nice here. Interesting taxidermy displays and nice decor. We will come back again and try the food menu.

Deeeeelicious! The food's truly amazing here. Especially the vegetarian gnocchi. There were seven of us for dinner and the food and customer service was exceptional. The waiters were attentive and anticipated our needs. Chefs Morgan and Trish truly know how to dish up mouth watering food! They're so talented. It's the new hip and happening restaurant in Melbourne and I can see why.

Lovely big venue, with room to move between tables. High ceilings and interesting things to look at but on a personal level, I'm not interested in taxidermy animals in the bar or restaurants i go to. It seems to be some wanky Melbourne trend to display rare, extinct or just pointless poor animals in a venue, just to get people thinking it's cool. It's actually not cool, it's just a tacky way to make a impression on people hungry for a fad and I'm just not into that really. I think more focus should be put on the food so that people go back for that and then that's what a place can be renown for, not the dead animals. The food was kinda bland. Sounded good on the menu but didn't have anything memorable About it. Friendly staff but nothing to write home about. Good fairly quiet place to have a casual lunch or a nice drink at the bar but it gives the impression that it would get kinda loud into the later evenings. Overall, not the worst place I've been but certainly not one I'd rave about. Middle of the road with potential to do so much better and get people raving about it but they seem to rely on people coming in for the trendyness. Melbourne can do much better than this but it isn't all bad. If you're like me you can sit facing away from the dead animals and look at other interesting things hanging around.

Friday night - was busy but not chaotic, could get served quickly , with fast efficient staff. Live piano player was great for sing alongs, even though it was super loud and you couldn't talk to the person next to you (probably to drown out the terrible singers!). Food was OK , great fitout and fantastic looking at all the different match boxes under the private bar glass.

I cannot stress enough how amazing this place is. Walked into a nice environment with the most attentive and friendly staff. Food was excellent. In particular, steak was cooked perfectly - every bite just melts in your mouth. Service was quick and super neat. Highly recommend for a dinner and drinks!! Will definitely be back.

Friendly service and interesting space. Slow kitchen on a Tuesday night. Our bottle was almost gone by the time the mains came out. Apparently, the kitchen was not happy with one of the dishes, but the O’Connor Hanger Steak was tough when it arrived. Other food was nice enough, but didn’t quite seem to on par with the ambitions of the establishment (and my expectations aside from the beef tartare, which was great).

I visited on a Friday evening for an ex colleague's leaving drink. Having already eaten beforehand, i opted for an entree of croquettes with chorizo, which was very nice. The Piano Man came on at 7pm and I, along with the rest of the group moved to the stools surrounding the grand piano. We had a great time, submitting our song requests and singing along.

Amazing venue - it will become our regular haunt. Food was delicious and the sommelier paired the wine perfectly. A very nice venue and great service. Has a warm, somewhat retro feeling to it. Great for work functions/drinks. The best thing that caught my eye was the matchbox/cover collection or "Phillalbum", that had quite a few interesting specimens 😁

We hosted a post-conference dinner at the Natural History Public Bar on 3 December 2019. This is a rare and amazing venue for professional functions!!! I have never organised/attended a smoother event. Kirsty, François and their team had everything prepared for us when we got there in a space that allowed people to be seated for dinner but with enough room to mingle. They printed out menus so that our guests knew what to expect. We had a sit down dinner that catered to all manner of dietary restriction. I have it on good authority that the vegetarian options were some of the best- interesting and tasty dishes (not the standard fare). Our tables adjoined seamlessly with the bar, which was important because we did not provide alcoholic drinks as part of the dinner but it was no problem for people to procure them. The very last but most important point is that, while the bar was quite busy, it wasn't too loud. Our guests were able to enjoy each other's company and conversation, which is essential for a group of academics! I would highly recommend giving Kirsty a call for your next function!

It's got the ability to be a prominent bar and grill but reality was the food wasn't incredibly memorable and it took way too long, even when booked in advance. 90 minutes for mains to arrive off the set menu to on a semi busy night was tough. Staff were scattered and was served by someone different every time. Decor and layout is great but when you are sitting waiting for food or trying to get a waiters attention it seems a novelty.

Quite a find after a couple of years; I must really get out more. They have natural history displays and a thatched (indoor) ceiling. The theme ends there. It’s not got a great ambience and the decor is a bit slapdash. Still points for trying. Staff are friendly. For value watch for the specials otherwise it’s average priced.
