Comments of Pellegrini's Espresso Bar
J. N.
An authentic, family-run Italian restaurant with generous portions and delicious food. Pasta is served hot in large oval dishes in gigantic portions. Desserts include Apple strudel, tiramisu and various classics done immaculately.
Service can be spotty as it is often held down by less experienced team members.
S. W.
One of the all time classic restaurants in Melbourne. Had the most delicious spaghetti here. Tasted like 100% homemade pasta. The best I've had. Service wasn't the best, but the food made up for it. Would 100% return for the spaghetti.
Y. B.
It is a very nice experience to visit such a traditional place in Melbourne. They claim to have brought the first espresso machine to Melbourne. If that is true or not it is difficult to say, but the place is old fashioned. They do not have a menu so you can sit and order whichever pasta you want and choose the sauce to go with it. Try choosing the tomato based pasta sauce like Bolognese or Napoletana. You will really feel like having pasta at your Nonna's house. And in summer, don't forget to get the watermelon granita.
B. R.
A very nice traditional Italian restaurant. Been here many times and never disappointed. UPDATED review. Going to Pellegrini is like going to visit your family. You cannot say no and the food is keep coming! Everyone is friendly and I can feel the family oriented approach they’ve taken. We can feel that if we don’t finish the food we feel guilty!! Just like when you visit your grandparents and they serve you food, you gotta finish them 😄 if you want to have no fuzz traditional Italian food, then look no more. Make sure to get the Margherita and lasagna. Rest in peace Sisto Malaspina, your legacy continues.

Just wow. The absolute best Italian in Melbourne without a shadow of a doubt. The staff are extremely friendly and you feel like family when you walk in the door. The food is out of this world amazing. The perfect comfort food on a rainy Melbourne day is spaghetti bol and lasagne. Everything was so flavourful and cooked perfectly. Can not recommend this place enough! The granita was delicious - a watermelon and I think orange iced drink.
G. P.
The environment was interesting, very “American New York” style. The plates were very generous and tasted great, the mozzarella Bolognese was a little to salty for my liking. Over all great, but not sure if I would come back.
S. N.
Good coffee and authentic Italian dining experience in the heart of Melbourne. Comfort food and good selection of cakes too. It’s got a very ol skool feeling when you walked in to Pellegrinis and it has not changed for a very long time and it works. Friendly staff too. 8/10.
M.
My absolute favourite restaurant in Melbourne! The pasta is incredible and so quickly brought to you. They cute bread rolls with butter they give you for free to dip in your pasta sauce or soup are an adorable added touch. All staff are always so welcoming and friendly. Thank you for having me 🥰
C. D.
Deliciously tasty food and great coffee. Well priced with decent portion sizes. Staff were extremely friendly and very prompt with service.
Y. Y.
Great food and atmosphere. Friendly staff members and my favourite watermelon granita. After few occasions visiting here, I started coming here regularly. Still hasn’t tried all the menu yet, I really enjoy eating here and filled with food and happiness. Come back again this week. :)
D. L.
Wonderful , friendly service. Returning here after COVID lockdown was wonderful. Staff friendly and attentive. Both my wife and had pasta that was beautiful ( the meat in the sauces was both tender and tasty). Coffees arrived at our table at ready to drink temperature
A.
As a person who hasn't been to Pellegrini, it was awkward sitting outside and ordering without a menu. Though, when the food arrived, it was delicious! Lasagna was two thumbs up for us but the carbonara was a little average. No price tags as well so a little weird if you don't know if the prices are right.
N. T.
Average tasting pasta but it is a Melbourne icon and unique in its own way. Good place to get a coffee but not much else unfortunately.
W.
While visiting Melbourne for a week for work I was wandering around looking to have dinner somewhere on my own and I could not have been happier with my choice to dine here. I had a wonderful experience with genuinely friendly staff who gave excellent service, plus the generous ricotta stuffed cannelloni bolognese meal I had was outstanding! It was fresh and delicious and will be a meal I will long remember. This is a casual, warmly welcoming place that has a rare quality sure to keep people going back. I will return whenever I'm in Melbourne.
M. B.
Always a great experience going to Pellegrini's. Been coming for 5 years and have enjoyed many a time the lovely atmosphere and hospitality the staff provide. Granitas are a must order and can't go wrong with the bolognese. Highly recommend if you have yet the chance to visit.
D. S.
Hasn’t changed in the forty years I’ve been coming here. Coffee is great. Atmosphere is amazing. I’m sure some of the decor is original.
Staff sound like they’ve just stepped off a plane from Italy. Service is great and everyone is so helpful and friendly.
This place is something of an icon in Melbourne and a must visit. The laneways around the area are also worth checking out.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Parking - well it’s Bourke Street, Melbourne so good luck with that.
Takeaway coffee available.
This is always worth a drop in when I’m in Melbourne.
R. C.
Really charming, quintessential Melbourne cafe. Very friendly, fast, and efficient service. The quality of the cakes and coffee is truly excellent. The atmosphere is enjoyable, and you're visiting a part of the cities history that is very well preserved.
M. F.
Great pasta, excellent coffee, fancy location, if you want to taste their best seller cream caramel be early as they all gone before lunch.
M. M.
I loved this place! The experience is authentic and no frills. The bar staff aren't very engaging but they are quick and always at your service which added to the experience. The plates of pasta were generous, homely and delicious, as was the rest of the food including the fresh cream with ricotta cake. Don't forget to try the granita!
C. M.
It is always a great experience coming here for a meal. The lemon tart serving was more than enough for two after a pasta dish each. Well worth a go if you're visiting Melbourne
H. R.
The Strudel here is the best Strudel i ever had, and i been tasting strudel in many places. They make a flat dough put the apples on and then roll it , like a spiral. ROLL IT LIKE A SPIRAL - true test of genuine strudel, "Strudel " = means 'spiral' or 'whirlpool'
Coffee is what they really do there. They were the first coffee bar in Melbourne in the 1950s.
After a while the guys behind the counter get to know you and greet you, and know what you like.
Three of the old guard i know from 1975, and they remember me still.
A. L.
My home away from home in Melbourne. Great coffee and great food. Staff are very lovely and welcoming people.
N. K.
Pellegrini's is like a live old movie set. You walk in and immediately feel as though you've travelled through time. I was always greeted with ciao bella! which I loved. The food for me, the Chef Kiss. Comforting and authentic, the BEST kind. Everyone should try a bowl of pasta at Pellegrini's.
NOTE: I ONLY write reviews for experiences I really enjoyed and sometimes even cherish.
H. P.
This is said to be the first espresso bar in Melbourne. Also they serve excellent pasta. But coffee is unbeatable. Please try to come and have at the bar stand. You won’t be disappointed.
W.
Pretty good classic Italian diner. I tried the meat balls spaghetti which was pretty good, after I saw Chael Sonnen come in here and try them while he was in Melbourne for a UFC event. They have a small set pasta and desert menu and serve just coffee, water or a delicious granita for drinks. Not a bad refreshment stop I reckon.
V. V.
Sea food marinara was divine, and I followed my host's advise to eat the Italian way, that is, without cheese. It was, again, divine. I didn't even mind to have pasta sauce all over my top. I had fun. Espresso was strong and my eyes are wide open now. I am fully charged. Please be aware that the space is tight, and you might have to look at yourself while eating. Don't come here with a big bag or shopping bags. Use one of those fanny pack around your waist, and you're good to go.
F. K.
Love the desserts and seafood spaghetti
M. S.
First came here years ago and cannot find anything that has changed. Which is a good thing. I really like this place. It's a bit different, a bit old school. Definitely unique. The food is great, what I would consider authentic italian. The coffee in my opinion has always been consistently good. The guys working here are very good at their job and sometimes a lot of fun thrown in. Not the bargain it once was but still decent value.
M. B. M.
such an iconic place in melbourne, although shrouded in nostalgia i fear with the younger generation taking over it is losing it's well know service, hospitality and nostalgia.
we had pasta bolognese and got slugged $16 each for small entree size dishes - that's quite steep!
Q. M.
Finally came here for the first time when all the other shops around had stopped serving coffee. The coffee is, admittedly, not great (although they do serve soy which is a plus). That said, the old-school atmosphere and friendly service made it all worth it. I would gladly visit again to try some food.
R. T.
A fine taste of Italy in the top end of town - Pellegrini is certainly a stalwart of Bourke Street and the Italian tradition. For years this venue has been a great place to pick a bite to eat before theatre or a movie. Their coffee is not to bad either.
S. H.
A great little Italian cafe/bar/restaurant in the CBD... the food was really good and the afogato was perfect...it feels like an authentic Italian place and the staff are all friendly...if you are in Melbourne go and give it a try.... loved their spaghetti Bolognese and their spaghetti Napoletana.. I Will go again for sure
c. m.
Very very friendly barista serving classic Italian style espresso, snacks, and pasta. Atmosphere was just like as if I were drinking coffee in an Italian movie.
A. L.
Tiny little italian bar (very old style) in the city centre of Melbourne.
I had an Amazing cappuccino this morning and a delicious slice of chocolate cake. I will absolutely come back soon to try some delicious pasta as well!
Reccommended!
N. S.
Generous serving of spaghetti Bolognese followed by a punchy espresso. Highly recommended!
P. S. (.
Magnificent food from a bygone era, just like my grandparents use to make. All the food and drinks are homemade. Very reasonable in price. Fantastic service.
P. P.
Dropped by tonight with a friend from overseas who wanted to try proper Melbourne coffee. What better place than Pellegrini's. They didn't disappoint. Great coffee with just the right strength and heat to it and wonderful blueberry pie. Only wished they'd make Cherry. Service was prompt and the bar stool seating was comfortable and easy to use. Great atmosphere. We got in early before 6 and for seating easy. By the time we finished the place had started to fill.

Pellegrinis is an institution and an absolute gem of a place! Authentically Italian, unpretentious and very suited to Melbourne’s laneway culture, it is steeped in history due to its longevity. Pellegrinis prides itself on its coffee and home-style Italian food. We have chauffeured many of our brides and grooms there in our classic Mustangs over the years, as they all love the iconic retro diner feel that suits the era of our cars in their bridal shoots. We recommend Pellegrinis to anyone seeking a great coffee, a delicious pasta or an authentic olde-worlde experience. Attached photos by Alex Pavlou Photography, Art By I, Dana Tsokas and Hakan Dalar.

Good food, great prices, amazing staff. Eat here and feel at home. Perfect after work dinner. Authentic flavours. Best pasta anywhere (and yes I have had pasta in Italy).
D. L.
Never get tired of the delicious authentic Italian food. The absolute best.
D. L.
A must visit every trip to Melbourne. The no fuss service, menu and food all add to an authentic and relaxed experience. The food is delicious and I can’t go past the Mozarella Bolognese (bread topped with ham, cheese and bolognese- so so delicious)
Make sure you get a granita with your meal 👌
S. H.
Delicious old school Italian espresso bar! Got the Spaghetti Bolognese with Meatball and spaghetti marinara. Staff are all very friendly! Must try in Melbourne!
E. M.
Classic authentic Italian! Get your carb coma on at this family owned and operated eatery. Unassuming hole in the wall with a delightful atmosphere of family, incredibly low prices especially for the meal size, and quick service. Very highly recommended
N.
When they talk about "Melbourne Cafe culture" it is Pellegrini's that they are referring to. The feel and look is everything that most Australian's relate to a Melbourne cafe. The coffee was as good as what you would expect, and the regulars, along with the staff, made you feel as though you had just walked on to a TV set. Always worth the visit.
A. G.
Compared to some of the other much more recently established Italian cuisine restaurants in Melbourne, such as can be found in Lygon Street, Carlton, the food served at Pellegrini's, is fairly simple and perhaps a little over priced. However, it is Pellegrini's and as far as Melbourne restaurants are concerned, Pellegrini's is a Melbourne institution with a lot of history. It's been open, serving authentic homestyle Italian food in an almost timeless decor and atmosphere, and long before my time.
So, while I do enjoy Pellegrini's coffee and homemade cake, the food which is traditionally simple, is a little over priced and overall I think Pellegrini's is over-rated.
Y. B. D.
Just go there. You’ll have a great experience!
Order your pasta from the wall’s menu and experience a great cup of coffee from the great barista, Dominique!
f. a.
Oldest Italian cafe in Melbourne!
Must go. ... with girls. Hahah
They are all Italian ppl who want to speak italian might can go as well. Pasta is like Italian mama's flavour. They just don't have a menu.
Anyway you should try granita, lasagna, meatball, ravioli apple strudel and cakes. They are so good!
L. C.
We came here for dinner and had great tasting pasta. Had a very home style to the food.
It did feel a little cramped inside, and the slight feeling to have you in and out. Overall not too bad.
R. L.
Great Italian coffee shop with great food and coffee. Very cozy and homey. Run by the same family for many generations. One of Melbourne iconic coffee shop.
M.
Amazing Italian food and atmosphere. We absolutley love this place. Its a must in melbourne. Seating is tight but fun
H. C.
Fantastic, non-discriminatory service. Super friendly staff, amazing food and Wonderful service. Keep up the good work guys.
N. J.
Great coffee in a wonderful old school italian family run historical establishment. Celebrate melbourne's multicultural heritage. Fresh made cakes and treats everyday. Listen to the sounds of ebullient conversations in italian passionately escaping the kitchen!
J. B.
Oh my God I've gone to food heaven. And the staff are angels.
The food is so good.
B. H.
Great coffee & friendly service, as you sit at the counter. Simply a blast from the past, and the perfect spot for a simple breakky of ham, cheese & tomato on toast.
A. D.
Its the kind of place Melbourne is known for! Its a beautiful small cafe with a rich history, near a corner of the town that only coffee lovers would manage to find! It servers delicious coffee with a creme caramel to die for! If you are looking for a true Melbourne experience, this is where you go to forget your mid-week blues.
F. M.
Same as when I frequented it back in the early 90s. Good ol basic Italian home cooking.love it always.
S. M.
When we visited the staff members were nothing but friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and comforting, generous portions too! No prices, but it was reasonable from the breakdown.
Don't skip dessert either.
d. k.
The laziness was so good but the carbonara not
The coffee and cake amazing 10\10
W. D.
Pasta is legit good !! Best family run Italian restaurant! So homey best cure for a chilly night in Melbourne :) food came in 30sec
I.
$ It is a Melbourne icon. Excellent coffee, homestyle italian food - menu changes daily, home made cakes etc. No tables, meals/coffee served at the counter. A great place to experience. It's no frills, old school and authentic.
C. V.
As far as coffee goes I give Pellegrini's five stars! I haven't had the pleasure of dining as of yet so when I do I will edit my review accordingly, the Coffee is beautiful, there's nothing worse than a bad coffee and I haven't yet experienced that at Pellegrini's Espresso Bar. I look forward to trying the food menu and giving some feedback.
D. L.
A Melbourne iconic landmark it's like stepping back in time to an Italian cafe. The menu was on a board hanging from the ceiling with no prices, we had the lasagna which was good washed down with some granita.
m. v. d. Z.
We had dinner here, my partner had seafood pasta and I had a lasagna. And we both really enjoyed our food, don’t expect anything fancy but great flavors with rustic ambiance. Place feels like stepping back into the 80s, Rocco is super friendly and made us feel welcome. Definitely coming back again to this institution in Melbourne.
D. A.
Beautiful coffee and Lasagne. Very tasty, and great service.
M.
I always come here when I visit Melbourne however it's now a little overated and pricy. Can't remember ever getting a good pasta here.
C. M.
After 30 years away from Melbourne it was such a joy that Pellegrinis was totally unchanged, a Melbourne icon
C. H.
Food's honestly not the *best*, but it is unique and it has heart. It's also soul-warmingly traditional.
The coffee, however, is the absolute best.
I am the fourth generation of my family to eat there ❤
K. G.
Best pasta place in the word. So cozy and such a nice place to eat
m. a.
As a student who goes to the city as a school trip my group and i were delighted with how kind, friendly and comforting the place was, food was tad bit overpriced and i didnt afford buying food yet the owner said "i cannot let you leave without trying the gratitini" he passed out a free gratini drink to all of us and it tasted spectacular.
Amazing place would reccomend
B. P.
Lagagne, bread and a granita, nothing beats lunch at Pellegrinis....and it won’t break your bank. Only downside is the staff support Collingwood 😊 and Sisto Essendon, but you can’t have everything. Coffee is as you’d expect, fantastic, the long black a go to choice, and it’s a great spot for the iconic Melbourne insta shot. when last there the owner even came out to take a photo of my niece from Vancouver and I, now that’s hospitality, a true Melbourne experience.
I. M.
My favourite place to go for coffee and cake in Melbourne! Super old school Italian, home-style delishous cooking.
J. I.
While in Melb we after some good Italian for dinner. Someone suggested Pellegrini's, when we got there not going to lie we weren't sure it was the right place. We were expecting some fancy cafe. Limited menu options but that didnt matter, the food spoke for itself, so homily like right out of nona's kitchen. The staff are amazing (shout out to Dave) so attentive and engaging. The place has such a great Vibe. Will definitely be back again on our next trip!
p.
Amazing food and great staff
Highly recommended
A. D.
This place has been in the same family since 1954. Great Italian food at a reasonable price.
R. P.
Simple and to the point, Pellegrini's offers classic Italian coffee and meals done deliciously. The long black suits my taste perfectly, strong and smooth with a little touch of bitterness and a crema so thick it holds a sprinkle of sugar so I get a bit of sweetness as I drink.
C. S.
You can enjoy Italian food in a comfortable atmosphere.
J. L.
Love the latte and especially almond cake.. perfetto! Iconic place and visit in melbourne
R. O.
Great authentic italian food. Pasta, deserts - family style.
a. d.
Recommended by my brother that has lived in Melbourne a long time and the visit did not disappoint. An experience, great food and coffee. Really felt like going back in time.
C. M. G.
Delicious home made Italian food just like nonna used to make. This place is an institution and highly recommended.
D. S.
This is the second time we’ve come here immediately after a Covid lockdown ended. Just knowing you can’t get to an establishment like this makes it double the torture. Get here at last and IT’S SO reassuring, so comforting, like you know it would be. This is the kind of place that even on your 20th visit you’ll still be bragging to your friends, sharing pasta photos, discuss desserts etc. I’ll stop now.
S. H.
Great place. Fast pasta. Not the best food to be honest, but is fast and clean. The door air curtain must be 50 years old and is super noisy, so it should be replaced with a quiet energy efficient model. Coffee always good. Same decor from 50 years ago.
R. W.
Came here for a late night espresso after a heavy dinner. Classic Italian feel with great quality coffee. Simple but so charming.
S. L. C.
Great robust Italian coffee. Highly recommended for coffee lovers.
C. (.
Amazing and friendly service. Truly italian and service with a smile for many family generations. From basic pasta to dessert to coffee, everything is a must-try
M. C.
Good food and great service. Always a pleasure.
C. L.
Lasagne and granita is my go to at Pellegrini’s - also worth trying the minestrone.
M. L.
Fantastic coffee and atmosphere.
Walking in & the devine smells of delicious food cooking.
A little piece of Italy on Melbourne ❤❤
C. O.
The coffee was smooth and relaxing. Lunch was a generous plate of ravioli with a tomato sauce. If you Just want something light i wouls suggest sharing one plate as it will come with a side of hand ripped bread. One of the oldest cafes In Melbourne and when ever you walk in you can tell it is full of regulars. The deserts are hand made and while I didn't get to try one I can assure you they looked as good as they would of tasted.
V. N.
I enjoyed the fact that they brought us some buttered bread and cold water as we waited for our food. The water was kept in old milk cartons under the bar, which was an interesting form of storage. We ate opposite the bar facing a mirror running right in front of us, which I didn't particularly enjoy because I don't like being reminded of my own reflection while I'm eating or in conversation. The food was good for what it was; the lasagne was a bit lukewarm however, but I liked how its softness was conducive to being cut by a fork, which was coincidentally the only cutlery they gave us, which I approve of, because I am a firm believer that all pasta should be eaten using only a fork. My friend's pesto ravioli was pretty good, and hot too, and I envied that temperature. The portions were generous.
p. w.
Was a pleasant reminder of my youth attending this establishment. My best friend's Mum used to whip us up authentic Italian pasta while you watched her and this is what we got at Pellegrini's. We were told to sit out the back, but you were actually in the kitchen. There was a long table there that we sat at and we were able to watch our meal as it was being prepared right in front of us. Rosanna's conversation with us and a couple of other lads was also a highlight. My Ravioli Bolognese was deliciouso.
R. M.
There is a reason it has the reputation it does after all this time. The service is quick and clean with polite waiting staff, giving you a simple Italian experience in the heart of Melbourne.
If you are early you will get a seat at the bar which is worth doing to see the place in action.
While it is becoming a bit dated in its interior now, the food is amazing and the staff lovely. Worth a visit at any time!
S. S.
Meal was delicious so was the coffee and sweet! Close to the tram and train station. Love the look inside
C. G.
Wow what a fun relaxed pace to eat. Great either alone or in a pair, but more than that will get hard to talk with the sitting at the bar format.
Food is really good with a very short menu hanging from the middle of the ceiling. Great prices.
Fast friendly happy place! Don't expect too much and you'll love it!
J. M.
Always a great place to come for a quick meal or excellent coffee and cake. A real Melbourne institution.
E. B.
Interesting place I think it didn’t change from 70s , the service and old school desserts and the vibes. I had coffee and apple strudel ( not pastry , it was like a very thin filo without the butter kind of texture ) was like $13 to be honest I couldn’t have it until the staff asked me if I want some cream . Many regulars Chucked the coins get the coffee and some have the pudding which is no on the menu ? I don’t know if they have menu but regulars know. If you are the tourists or new customers might feel step in time back to 70s or need to take time to fit in this iconic espresso bar . I Still Enjoy the experience . But I won’t get apple strudel next time : D
A. D.
Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar is one of the best places in the world get authentic Italian pasta. I absolutely adore every single thing about this place. We sat in mamas kitchen as she prepared our meals. My mouth is literally watering as I remember the spaghetti bolognese I ate. It’s the greatest! If you are in Melbourne eat here.
G. R.
A great spot serving traditional Italian pastas from different Italian regions. We were four at lunch and we were given a table in the kitchen which is probably one of the best spot because you can see the cook preparing the delicious dishes they serve. Menu seems to be only by word of mouth but who cares if it's the atmosphere of an old Italian style trattoria that you are looking for. I couldn't have any sweets this time, unfortunately.
J. C.
This is the most amazing place. So authentic - I felt like I was in Italy. The Grenada is beautiful along with real authentic pasta. I loved seeing the history on the walls through photos of all the years. This place really made my mums birthday. Now I know why it has been talked about for years and years. The service was very friendly. I loved it!
P. K.
Always good coffee, home cooked food and quirky entertainment 😆 they have their own style so don't expect service as in other cafes. Coffee and food come fast but it may take few minutes for them to serve you, which is ok, cos they need to interact with other people. They don't mean to ignore anyone but they have human approach, almost forgotten in other places. That includes their very Italian personality. It is a bistro style with bar stools. I always wish they have more comfy chairs though
J. D.
Awesome Pasta and Service, so friendly and was a good way to have lunch on a cold Melbourne day.. would recommend and cant wait to go back..
P. B.
Went here for a quick bite on Sunday night with my wife. We haven't been for a long time but what a fantastic experience. Authentic home cooked pasta, coffee, and that warm feeling. What more could you want!...plus great apple pie.
j. s.
What a little gem! Food delicious and they have a very beautiful refreshing drink with watermelon and lemon. Staff are just amazing and so genuine and warm hearted. Will definitely visit on our return to Melbourne again.
F. L. L.
Perfect lasagna and ravioli, with watermelon and lemon granita and an espresso to finish. Beautiful.
R. H.
Classic Italian food with plenty of flavour & no frills. Delicious!!
Z. B.
Bit expensive but you pay for good service and great atmosphere.
Amazing customer service and such a homey place for the best food.
D. B.
Love this place. Old school Italian food in an original setting. People were friendly when we went too.
M. T.
Good foods, Good vibes, perfect 👌
Pellegrinis bar is still ALIVE!
However, last time I went there, a basidia didn’t flush a steam baffle, which is used for making form milk, every time... it was a bit unhygienic... I wish they would work with hygienic especially this time 🙏
F. M.
Iconic Italian pasta bar in Melbourne. The food is always served quick and always with fresh buttered bread. The granitas are so good. The staff are warm and welcoming and the food is great. Their coffee is really good too. No fanciness, just good food and coffee. If it's not too busy you can get a seat in the kitchen which is a cool experience.
H. N.
I tried Latte, and it was one of the best I ever tried!
K. P.
An Italian experience in the CBD, I love this place for a quick meal of pasta before a theatre show or a coffee after the theatre finishes! The menu is limited and that's what I love about it! Pasta, bread on the side, sparkling water, granita or coffee and served pronto!! It's a wonderful experience served on a long Central bar or if there are no seats you'll sit on the wall. It's a great, busy, busy place!!! Worth a visit and worth a short wait for a seat or two! Not really a place for groups unless you can get the 1 table out in the kitchen !!! The food is fresh and authentic, rustic, Italian fare, served without pomp and ceremony which is why I love it. So well priced and the staff are wonderful too!

Pellegrini’s Esperro Bar, Bourke Street, City of Melbourne. The coffee bar was set up in 1954 by Leo and Vildo Pellegrini brothers and emigrant from Italy. Classic! Arrivederci Dan Hoang from Danhthemanadventure.

Great place. Friendly atmosphere. Everyone sits on the same long table/bar. People come here for the pasta, pastries and granita. Despite the name, the coffee is very very average, but still 5 stars

Great food | Great Coffee | Great Atmosphere
The food - authentic, homemade, and speedy. It’s simple food that’s not trying to be anything special, and that’s what makes it so special.
It feels like you’ve just walked into home. Friendly banter behind the counter, conversations between generations of people running the store, and the owners seem to know everybody by name!
It’s just good wholesome food, and even better hospitality.

By far the best place I've eaten in Melbourne so far. The atmosphere is incredible, with the food to match. There is no menu, they will usually bring you what they feel like otherwise they will ask you for your preference. Overall spectacular place, highly recommend.

Second visit with my brother to this special place. From the moment we arrive it feels as though we have been coming here for years. The food is absolutely beautiful old school style, just like our aunty used to make. The coffee and hot chocolate is great to compliment your delicious dessert as well. The staff are very friendly and it feels like we have known them for years as well. A special thank you to Nino for the kind hearted gift and compassion to my brother, we will remember that for ever. You are a true gentleman and all the staff are true as well. We did not add any photos as no photo can truly represent what this establishment is truly like, it is something that needs to be experienced first hand to understand this unique and important place. Thank you and see you all next time. Cheers

10/10 Very very good place for a cup of coffee! Environment is very cozy and owners are really nice! They recommend well and are very generous with their servings! Just tell them what kind of coffee you would like and it will be freshly made for you! You must try this place. I will come back again!

If you're Australian-Italian like myself, then this place will put you straight back into your childhood adventures at Nonna's house. Whilst some reviews will exclaim that the atmosphere and food may not live up to the "Melbourne" standard, what they seem to overlook is that Pellegrini's is not trying to keep up.
What you will get is simple authentic Italian style home cooking. These are the exact recipes immigrants in the 60's brought over with them, predominantly from southern Italy. The food's characteristics center around being heavy, wholesome and tasty but in the simplest form.
It's fair to say that this place is the perfect spot if you want to experience what it's like in an Italian home, but an Australian-Italian home at that.
R. A.
Quintessential old style Italian food and service. Do not come here for the decor or pretty dishes or fine dining table service experience - there isn’t any. Come for the authentic home style Food which is hard to beat outside of Italy. No wines or beer. Just great food (and coffee).
D. E.
This place is hidden gem bang in the centre of Melbourne. The food is authentic, wholesome and truly Italian. The service from all the staff is so personal and they make you feel like apart of their family. I love the simplicity - no menus, no commercialisation, just really good food. A must visit!
C. S.
Friendly staff, good food & coffee. Good value for money, quick service, basic menu mostly Pasta. Try a refreshing Granita if you not up for a coffee. Great range of cake's to go with your coffee. Friday in Gnocchi day.
j. r. o.
Feels like home. Simple, no fuss and exceptional. Go there and you will understand. Beautiful pasta, food was delicious, generous serves of cake. The best part was chatting with staff and feeling like someone's nonna cooked just for you.
H. H.
Travel back in time to Nana's place and have her make you a home made pasta right in front of you in the back dining room. A room that hasn't been renovated in decades. Then come out to the bar and have a simple cake and coffee proper Italian style. Just lovely!
BTW there is no menu, just ask for what you want:)
G. D.
Cozy Italian cafe. You feel like you served on the kitchen bench of an Italian family home.
I’m a big fan of their cakes with lots of cream and a bittersweet hot chocolate. 😋
J. S.
They have good coffee and food to
T. A.
An absolute favourite in Melbourne! Best pasta, cake and coffee! A must when in the city- an authentic gem of culture and history!
J. B.
The owner Nino was very kind and talkative as well as providing good service. I had an excellent espresso and Apple stroodle, can't wait to back. And when it comes to the quality the price is more than fair.
N. A.
The now historic venue, went to experience the coffee. Supposedly this place hasn’t changed one bit since the 70’s when it first opened, and it shows. Didn’t have a meal or sit down as it was pretty crowded. As far as coffee goes it wasn’t anything to write home about. Still, nice to see a little piece of history in Melbourne.
I. S.
Nice Italian food. Feels very much home made. We are here after watching book if of Mormons in the theater which is not too far away.
We had the lasagna which was very rich and was enough for us to share as we were not too hungry.
They get 4 stars because the service was not very nice.
R. D.
Regulars since it first opened, particularly enjoyed the restaurant at the back which has been closed for many years. Staff have always been very welcoming & friendly. Pellegrini's is well known for it's consistently good coffee, the food is consistently delicious and the servings are very generous. It is always difficult to decide which cake to have, they also serve really good creme caramel. You never know what celebrity you are going to see, one evening Maggie Smith and her entourage were there and on another occasion Andrew Peacock MP, was on his own and asked my wife and I if he could join us. We always find Pellegrini's to be a totally enjoyable and relaxed dining experience.
e. m.
My sister and I were visiting from Perth and fell in love with this places old world charm. The Bolognese is delicious and the orange drink, while u was wary at first, was refreshing. But the best part (other than the apple strudle) was the people who served us. Kind, welcoming and genuine. Thank you for the conversation and amazing experience
C. C.
A nostagic Italian cafe now trading on its past name and fame. I have been coming here for over 40 years and nothing has changed, and that is what is charming about Pellegrini's. Food is good, tried and true welcome dishes that never fail to satisfy. Service is satisfactory, however they should take more care in what they say in Italian behind the bar, you never know who understands. Coffee is always good and so is the cake servings. We will always return for some memories as its one of last true early Melbourne cafe's.

I'd heard lots about the legendary Pellegrini's, so was interested to drop by for a bite. I had gluten-free pasta Napoli and my husband had lasagne. Both were simple and tasty. We each had a coffee, and my husband had a slice of baked cheesecake which he said was light and delicious. Our visit was spoiled slightly by an elderly man who was clearly part of the establishment who was complaining loudly about staff matters. It seemed very rude behaviour and i felt i was intruding in his private space, rather than a valued guest. No menu had been shown to us or any prices discussed. I felt the $54 we were charged was steep. I think we both felt a little disappointed overall by the experience.
R. M.
What an experience! Old school, no frills, Italian joint serving delicious food. Went with a good friend to break my 2yr long "vegetarian streak" and couldn't have chosen a better place, company or dish. Delicious lasagne (we wiped our plates clean with fresh buttered rolls at the end), funny and friendly Italian owners who my friend says have been around forever. Can't wait to go back and try other dishes and their blueberry tart!
v. k.
Homely meals, great coffee, and lively service.. no wonder this place always manages to make it on top lists of so many blogs and feeds
K.
A fun night in the pelligrini kitchen, a nice vibe. Interesting place in terms of no menu, price. Staff run through options. Good food, meatballs very average. Definitely worth checking out. Dessert was average. No alcohol or soft drink, quite refreshing to go out and enjoy a meal. It's a dine and dash venue.
Think I'll try again.
J. S.
Had the most delicious vegan pesto tomato penne here! With fresh bread, and refreshing granita, it was the perfect dinner!!
Such a friendly vibe here, with staff welcoming locals and new guests alike. Will definitely be back for more!
L. B.
Absolutely the best.
The place is totally nostalgic, or what I feel would’ve been the embrace of post-1950’s Melbourne.
The Apple strudel here is to die for, I’m convinced it’s gotta be the best apple strudel in the Southern Hemisphere (if not the northern hemisphere also).
Whether you its for a quick lunch of lasagne and an espresso, or a dinner with your loved ones, Pellegrinis will always put a smile on the face of the diners.
The best place to sit is either at the bar or out the back in the kitchen.
Also, the granita is a must.
A. G.
It was OK. I do find the whole mid-20th century European cafeteria motif appealing. And that's what you're getting here, a quick and easy cafeteria meal. You're not getting Nonna's home cooking.
The lasagna came out super fast but it was rather bland tasting and a bit mushy. The watermelon granita drink was great though. I'd probably only eat there again if I needed a very quick meal. It's got more charm than most other fast food places.
W. K.
Really great coffee shop, a traditional Italian Espresso Bar, I love how it’s open late too!
g. d.
Pellegrini's is amazing atmosphere. Love there spaghetti Bolognese and watermelon lemon granita . Friendly staff. Italian food made with love and tradition. I will be back. Also love the old school look inside the bar. I love pellegrini's a Melbourne institution with heart and soul.
J. S.
As much a part of Melbourne as the trams that patrol out streets. Amazing food, superb coffee and lovely people. Rest In Peace Sisto
J. S.
I love pellegrinis, the old school charm, pies, and pasta are worth revisiting every time I visit Melbourne. However, I have 2 complaints, the staff could be perhaps a *tad* friendlier, and prices should be made visible to the customers. Other than that, a beautiful place with beautiful food
J. S.
Great pasta, portion sizes have reduced a bit in the last 5 years. Service has definitely improved a lot. This is a great place to visit in Melbourne, probably one pasta place that’s stayed authentic. Try the spaghetti bol with a meat ball.
J. R.
Just tried the ravioli and minestrone, and they were hands down the best Italian food I have ever tried. Their hot chocolate is absolutely delicious as well. I'll definitely be coming back for the food and the lovely staff. What a great experience.
J. N.
The staff are so amazing in this place. Would recommend to stop in for a good cup of coffee.
A. N.
Classic Italian joint serving up rustic pasta dishes, old school desserts and coffee. No fuss, and not pretentious. Have a friendly chat with the staff, and do ask them for recommendations. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
K. P.
A Melbourne treasure! Your visit to Melbourne isn't complete unless you eat at this institution.
Pasta done the Italian way. Coffee is superb. Feels like your Italian aunty's place. Friendly and helpful suggestions given if you don't know what to have.
E. F.
One of the old-school, old-Melbourne set of establishments that provides an experiential portal into the Melbourne of the early 90s when there was one sushi place in the CBD. I recommend you bring a hearty appetite into the honest and unvarnished “back dining room”.
J. Y. A. N.
Classic Italian diner. Dropped by here to try the atmosphere and a shot of espresso. Very friendly staff if u bother to engage them and the staff knows their old customers very well. Interesting to hear their delightful conversations.
k. f.
I really liked the coffee, I had an Espresso and a long macchiato. Both were very good. The ravioli were nice, maybe a little over done, with a nice tomato sauce.
The bolognese, was rubust with the mince so tender it melted in your mouth, pasta not aldente to my liking but each to their own.
D. “.
A nice spot for old Italian cafe charm. The lasagna, spagbol is nice if a bit pricey for what it is. Watermelon granita is great. Coffee is also ok but then, you're in Melbourne and you're not really coming here for that. What you're coming here for is to experience the atmosphere of the place. This place is more touristy rather than local as a result. Visit this place at least once. Ignore the 1 stars, they're ridiculous.
J.
Certainly a must-visit Melbourne icon. Maybe not the latest and greatest, but you will be treated like family, and a spag bol or espresso here should be on everyone's list.
A. C.
Great coffee. Food is good, but nothing exceptional. The Spaghetti were over cooked, and I do love my pasta al dente.
Staff was not extremly friendly, they do their job, but they forget and smile and say thank uou went you leave.
M. S.
Wonderfull melbourne icon. No reservations, never know who you will bump into.
A. S.
Great Service. Wonderful Atmosphere. Incredible Coffee.
I didn't have the cash to pay, only card. The big boss said I could have the coffee on the house.
Strongly recommended. Probably the best coffee I've had in Melbourne.
J.
Food like Nonna makes it and an authentic experience is a winning combination.
J. H.
This is Melbourne at it's best. Yes, you will pay more than usual for a bar stool, a plate of pasta and a crowded, often noisy atmosphere. But the people connect with each other like nowhere else. The staff treat you like an old friend, and the other customers are cousins you haven't seen in years. It's fluid and dynamic, enveloping and welcoming. They come from all over to be here, this is Melbourne.
M. C.
When visiting Melbourne the first time, a friend took me here for my first true Melbourne coffee experience - I still remember it clearly from 1981. Obviously not a recent review!
R. M.
Wonderful! Flew in from New Zealand and got in late and hungry. Wandered around and found Pellegrini's and am so pleased we did. Gorgeous, soft, cheesy cannaloni washed down with a refreshing glass of granita and then some raspberry pie to top it off. Lovely, friendly service too! Left very happy and satisfied. Will be back!
J. J.
We had coffee and cake and got 2 takeaway meals which would do 4 people. It was a fabulous atmosphere. I go there every time I come to Melbourne. Its awesome.
T. M.
Been here many times since I was a smallish boy. And it is a joy. Very much old-school. What you see is what you get. Coffee is honest and strong. Don't come here for subtlety. I recall good straightforward pasta meals here too. I hope that it lives on.
k. c.
Authentic italian eatery. Homemade pasta and pasta sauce which is so delicious it melts in your mouth. Service is outstanding and fast. After 2 minutes of placing my order it came nice, hot and tasty. Great value for money as its decent and affordable pricing. Reccomended
J. W.
Very old world feel and wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen. I enjoyed hot chocolate (wonderfully unsweet) and a slice of blueberry pie which was excellent. Great place to come for dessert after dinner. Would definitely return here.
M. H.
Good coffee and cakes. The focaccia are nice also.
R. S.
It’s the best
R. D.
Amazing little Italian cafe. The staff were absolutely fantastic. Coffee was amazing and the homemade desserts were incredible. The atmosphere was very authentic and the pasta dishes all looked fantastic. Great little place.
M. L.
Very cozy. Incredibly Italian. Great coffee.
T. S.
Three times in two days and I still have another day in Melbourne. Pellegrini's satiates all my Italian needs, wants and desires.
Very disappointed in some of the reviews on here. For those who like a stool and old world, and an experience of Italian roots in Melbourne with a spoken menu of the best home made pasta, you will be completely satiated. Oh and the cakes.... just do it! Enjoy!
J. C.
So good we are going back for breakfast.
C. B.
Homely, cheap and delicious. Very chill
V.
Had a slice of cake and a cup of coffee. Cake is nice, but the coffee is not actual flat white without any latte art. The service is like the coffee here, not so tasty and rough.
J. T.
My partner and I have been coming here every Saturday for just over a month. It was intimidating to begin because we are used to a particular style of service - menus, wait staff, wine lists - and Pellegrini's has instead a board with a couple of listed items, a busy countertop and a seasonal granita. But quickly we learned that the staff are earnest and genuine, the service is quick and the food very tasty. You're welcome to order off the board but the kitchen will accommodate your favourite pastas and sauces, offering up carbonara, puttanesca and my partner's cheese ravioli with primavera without hesitation. Ensure you mention any dietary requirements and don't be afraid to ask the staff what is on offer; your waiter can list a number of options at request.
We perch at the counter with coffees and chat, and there are a number of sweet options on display that they will offer with cream or ice cream. The background music is replaced with the sounds of a busy restaurant; we enjoy feeling like we are part of the restaurant with staff around us calling orders and laughing with customers, passing buttered bread rolls and glasses of water to people around us.
Definitely worth a visit and will be somewhere we continue to come to for a long time to come. Special thanks for Cristian for always making us feel welcome.
J. M.
Amazing food and a very authentic Italian experience down to the very informal service and family styled home cooking that comes out in no time flat. Seating is a bit cramped but the food is priced so well it doesn't matter because you'll eat it so fast that you'll be out of there before you sit down.
E. L.
Authentic Italian pasta (I had carbonara) that you couldn't ask for anything better. Portion was also huge with a piece of bread before the pasta arrives. However, items could be clearer for first-timers as myself. There weren't any physical menu being offered, merely shown on some dangling signs from the ceiling in the middle of the restaurant. Except the words weren't that clear and some of them had bad colour scheme with it. Service staff are friendly and attempted to tell me what they have by listing it out, but sometimes for newcomers they may be totally overwhelmed and simply choose any familiar one that they've heard. In any case, 4 stars, minus a star for this one small aspect.
M. S.
Food and coffe good.
when you walk in Pellegrini you can enjoyed for a food and coffe but not for the people.
I have been there on lunch time on monday and there is a old lady very rude in talking in asking to pay the bill. Into the kitchen you can’ t have a peace or nice space to eat as the Lady scream and look like very bossy and she is not friendly with her team member.
So for the food I am not complain but for the enviroment I am not suggest to people I am know as you feel fear and not happiness and while you eat you need peacefull.
A place for pensioner as old
The old lady that work here is very rude and unprofessional
and so sad to see a man drunk
C. T.
Pasta from here is exceptional. Spaghetti bolognese was one of the best I've had. Service here is quirky, you order food and drinks at the bar, and your food will be ready in a couple of minutes. We got drinks in 1 minute and food in 3. Service wasn't friendly but it was very busy in there, so they have to get everyone served quickly otherwise everyone will be waiting around. Not spacious at all but definitley worth visiting to try their amazing food. Would be nice if prices were on display as we only found out how much it was after ordering and eating it.
J. K.
Homely Italian food, ambience, character left from '60's, good fun banter with staff is why you go to this iconic Melbourne cafe! We love their lasagna, sitting in kitchen at big table with our family.
D. F. (.
Awesome as always. Superb pasta, coffee and tiramisu. Packed this evening which was great to see
K. P.
One of the best and most reliable places ever in Melbourne. Fabulous coffee, wonderful staff, great bowls of pasta - simple and delicious. There's nothing anywhere else like a watermelon granita and their desserts are sensational.
A. H.
Old style Italian place that found a sweet spot in the 70s and never left. Very charming, though a little intimidating since there are no obvious menus. Am not certain if you're charged based on how much the owner likes you. Lovely melon drink and lasagne.
T. W.
Best place to eat in Melbourne for solo diners. The food is good without being great and the prices are about average, but it feels authentically Italian and the service is good.
Be ready to order without seeing a menu as there are only a few dishes to pick from (no all the same size) and only 3 things to drink (water, espresso or watermelon granita). But the staff are happy to talk you through the options.
J. G.
Fast service, great coffee and hot choc
W. S.
Coffee is ok - I'm not a big fan of the Victoria brand -. The best part is the shop itself - old fashioned cafe -, the staff and that it is open until late so you can have an expresso after a late dinner.
I went for lunch a week ago. I tried the lasagna. Pasta sheets were overcooked and taste was only ok. I tried the flan - cream caramel- and loved it.
C. B.
Great food and awesome friendly staff, can see why this cafe/restaurant has been here for many many years...
P. C.
One of the first Italian cafes in Melbourne. Great coffee. Meals available in small kitchen at rear, limited seating. Friendly staff, good service. Love the creme caramels
F. P.
Perfect place to eat italian pasta like in italy. Very friendly and very welcoming servicies !
M. C.
A Melbourne institution with consistently good food, coffee and service. Not much has changed over the years and I remember it has the first restaurant I ever went too - had simple Spaghetti Bolognese and that was decades ago.
F. S.
Went there last night for the first time in 20 years and it hasn't changed a bit. How many places in Melbourne or Sydney have survived that long. Tiny, great coffee, no -nonsense pasta, deserts that taste rather than look great. The staff were friendly once you made an attempt to engage with them. Devotees of the latest food fad (what! no quinoa and kale) or those with fashionable dietary restrictions which didn't exist when this place was started need not enter. Leave it to us please.
J. K.
What's not to like really? Good coffee, great tasty pasta, great granita and fruit cup. It's all good. Buzzing atmosphere especially at lunch time today.
D. A.
If you visit Pellegrini's and come away disappointed, you probably just can't be pleased in life. And I'm sorry for you for that. I've always been happy with the experience here, and the 6-7 times I made it to Melbourne, this place was always a must visit for me. Small, family oriented place, sit in the kitchen next to the oven for a real experience! It's like having dinner in your mama's kitchen and the food is a homecooked taste--that is if your mother was Italian and was the best cook in her neighborhood. Try the granitas. Very refreshing, and don't leave before getting an espresso as well.
Z. S.
The best place in the whole of Melbourne. My girlfriend's family have been coming here for over 40 years and there was not one moment they did not enjoy at this beautiful place. Thank you so much Sisto for leaving a timeless legacy – may you rest in peace.
S. S.
At Pellegrini's today as a Red Cross volunteer, they are amazing people and and trying to cope with a terrible loss it was a privlidge to be part of it.
J. T.
It's an institution - beats Lygon Street for pasta.
Walk in the door and a real old school eatery. I've been going there for too long and it has not changed. No fuss, no nonsense. Get a plate of pasta and good conversation, or sit facing the wall and keep to yourself. Its not your typical Melbourne dining experience but it well worth experiencing. If you've never been, you should once. If you have then you already know why you go back.
Bellissima
E. B.
You'll always feel like a family member here. My family have been enjoying the coffee and traditional Italian food here for roughly 15 years and every time we come in the service and quality is exceptional.
l. g. g.
Yep, a classic spot of Melbourne. Really glad my friend took me here.
B. A.
If you’re hunting for good pasta look no further than Pellegrini’s.
All pastas we’ve got from there have been good, the sauces are full of flavour and the pasta is solid.
The granita is the must try of this place.
M. L.
Don't listen to any of the negative reviews. Pellegrini's is hands down my favourite place in Melbourne. Nothing in Melbourne beats the combination of coffee, watermelon granita's and old style Italian food. But the meatballs...omg the meatballs..I love them so much, that I find myself thinking about them.. probably a bit more than I should. I hope the place lives on forever.
M. M.
I give five starts based on its amazing lasagna and the authenticity of the place. It feels like its always that has always been there and so should it stay. Not sure if the place is big enough for wheelchairs accessibility, probably it isn't.
L. B.
The legend that is Pellegrini's. Melbourne's original espresso coffee shop. Authentic and has not changed since opening. Coffee is a must here, food is basic italian, ready to eat, for a quick lunch. Mainly a coffee bar, and known meeting place.
A. B.
Great, bustling little Italian place, very popular with local office workers. There's seating along the espresso bar, or in the kitchen on a long communal table. It's cheap, cheerful, noisy and the coffee is great.
D. B.
Great little tourist haunt that’s been here for donkeys. I hadn’t been here for a good ten years but good to see nothing has changed. While not your best pasta in Melbourne, it’s certainly worth the visit to experience the banter and unique customer service.
M. V.
Great place to have a nice coffee with brilliant food and a cozy atmosphere. Was slightly crowded but didn't notice it. Will definitely be back regularly.
A. J.
It's a known fact that Melbournians love their coffee and are proud of the coffee culture. And everybody, almost everybody I met had a personal favourite. Being a coffee lover, I usually make the best out of my trips to Melbourne by savouring some of the best coffee offered in and around the CBD area. As a part of my walking tour last year, I was introduced to Pellegrini. {PELLEGRINI} I hear is THE first Italian restaurant that opened on Melbourne CBD's Bourke Street strip, known for its home style pastas and most importantly for its coffee.
While I could not experience much of what they had to offer for food, I did manage to savour their cappuccino during my quick walk-in visit there. I am just a coffee lover and I would not say it was the best coffee I have ever had. But I can definitely say that it was one of the best I had in Melbourne. I am no coffee expert and I cannot make any intelligent guesses on what makes a Pellegrini coffee, well a Pellegrini coffee. Maybe it is the bean, or the roast, or may be it is the Vittoria Coffee machine (in alluring yellow) that greets you at the front desk. The {Vittoria} heritage brand, is an Australian pioneer since 1958. I will leave it to you to experience Pellegrini and judge it yourselves.
I also heard that their home style pasta's, cafe style seating has not changed much over the last few decades. A must visit to experience a slice of history and their most wanted watermelon granita - which I am yet to try
Definitely worth a second visit, to enjoy something more than a cuppa coffee.
S. C.
A place that anyone needs to visit on there holidays in Melbourne or even people living in Melbourne. The pasta in this bar is amazing and the service is A1. Even though what happened in Melbourne Burke st they still have a smile on there face and continue with the traditions of the co owner.
G. M.
If you need to try authentic Italian cuisine. This is one of the places . Had a pasta and it was nice as they use the traditional method and no cream.
The place reminds of old dinner place good place for a casual meal.
H. K.
Iconic Melbourne institution serving coffee straight up! No skinny soy latte here! A true homage to authentic Italian coffee. order, drink and get out!
J. W.
Recommended as a Melbourne institution... Had the most unpretentious but divine lasagne and latte. Awesome. But next time I will try for the seating out in the kitchen, just the smells alone are worth the visit.
L.
The most amazing italian food that was presented beautifully and quickly. I recommend this if you want to enjoy a lovely coffee or some food which are both awesome.
D. D. A.
The best italian restaurant and authentic italian restaurant , they didnt change interior since 1960. Awesome and should try GRANITA (italian drink)
R. C.
A Melbourne legend. Rumour has it this was the first place in Melbourne to have a proper espresso machine and the birthplace of coffee culture in the city. Whether try or not, Pellegrini's is a great old school jaunt where you can plunk down on a stool at the cafe counter, order yourself a proper espresso and indulge in a slice of cake or pudding.
A. S.
Love this place. Be wary there's no set menu and no price list but it means every night comes out relatively cheap and really unique. No need for reservations and there's a high turnover of satisfied customers digging into good pasta
S. K.
Very friendly staff, just had a coffee & it was ready in a flash! Vittoria Coffee Brazil Rex is used here.
Wonderful interior with bar seating.
Will have to try some food next time.
M.
The most authentic Italian restaurant in Melbourne - an icon! thank you Sisto for your wonderful hospitality. I’ve been eating and bringing friends to you for years. Love your pasta, watemelon granita and of course your presence and warmth. RIP Sisto - you will always be remembered
A. R.
dinky little place, sit at a bar opposite the counter. Had a great risotto and my first iced coffee with ice cream! owner was a delight, and the decor felt steeped in history, rather than carefully curated to resemble history.
P. N.
Best food. Can not wait to go back friendly staff not to be missed if your in Melbourne.
C.
First time diner and to give a bit of context, we were bar hopping around the CBD on a Friday night. I wanted to sit and drink coffee somewhere cool. We randomly happened upon Pellegrini's and arrived to a moderately busy service at roughly 1030pm. We took a seat at the counter bar and ordered a lasagne and two coffees. A combination of my slight inebriation, the good company of a friend, the smell of coffee, the 70s decor, the waiters italian accent and the lovely stories of italy he shared, the echos of chatter and laughter, the clinking of coffee cups and saucers, forks and pasta bowls, the milling of pepper grinders, and the homely warmth of this diner, truly set the tone for a great experience. The coffee was lovely and the lasagne soulful. We were very happy to dine here and have plans to return with more friends. Thank you Pellegrini's.

The Godfather Bar haha :)!!
Was down in Melbourne for the greek festival so before i went oppppaa with the Greek food i had to go Pazzo at the Italian bar :).
Dad & cousin wanted great coffee us being from Sweden expectations are high, strong long blacks in Sydney is 7/11 coffees back home haha, dad got a flat white with a big scoop of Gelato on the side & cousin got a long black with a Ricotta cheese cake :D.
Dad loved the flat white & he said the Gelato was really tasty! Cousin was happy with his long black, said its not as bitter as most coffee shops that serve long blacks .. they possibly try to hard ;).
I was running on an Empty stomach so i had which i thought was an overly than usual big portion of Canneloni in a bowl compared to any other place I've been to & ordered that ... i aint complainin though lol!! 2 big rolls, plenty of cheesy tasty sauce .. i was huddled on my own with my bowl of canneloni, it was a heavenly 10 minute treat :D, all great things come to an end though ..
The inside of this place was perfect low light & not blinding bright.. perfect to walk in & unwind on the double :). It's the closest to an American diner yet slightly narrower :), row of seats along the bar & another row on the opposite side & the kitchen at the back where the Magic cooking happens :D!!
This place has been busy for 60 years for a reason, you could say Melbournians know where there is good coffee & good food :D!!
When i was there it was newly wed couple having their wedding photos in the laneway with a black Mustang & was telling me he'd been going here all his life :).
Then again there are a few that can't drink a coffee unless it has pretty chocolate sprinkled/milky pattern on top or eat the food if it isn't instagram worthy ;) lol.
That what makes Australia great though haha, old school is still up the top with the rest :)!!

My regular for a quick Ravioli and Granita. In and out in less than 20 mins with one classic espresso to finish. Nothing fancy, but very reliable and oddly comforting. I know I could spend more elsewhere and get fancier food with better service, but I don't always want that.

Traditional, quirky and affordable! Fantastic place to stop for a hearty Italian lunch and espresso!

Walked from King Str. To top of Bourke for the Apple Streudel..the best in Melbourne with a good coffee. Gr8 service & atmosphere. An institution and next door is Paperback bookstore..very good. Bottega & Florentinos..go to the grill room a and sit a t the bar. The staff are playful but professional. Sandwiched inbetween is American Tailors..the best menswear store of Italian imports. Sebastian one of the owners is one of the best dressed men in all of Oz. I am a woman and I love this store. Ciao
