Comments of PJ O'Brien's Irish Pub
J. S.
We booked a table for dinner, and were greeted by a very friendly and super attentive staff. We were seated in the dining area, and I was surprised by how quiet it was.
We ordered Fish n Chips (Beer battered fish fillet, chips, salad, tartare sauce), and the Beef & Guinness Pie (Guinness sauce, creamy mash potato, seasonal vegetables), plus Chips on the side.
Food was great, and went very well with Guinness & Magners Apple Cider.
I'd like to come back again, but have a seat at the bar area, as I want to experience the beauty of Irish pubs I am used to. This was too quiet for me.

I have not been to this Irish Pub for years. A great place to pop in for a beer and a quick bite if lunch. The service was very friendly and there was a mix of traditional pub fair and Irish classics. It was surprisingly quiet yet can imagine there would be an amazing atmosphere when it’s busy. The food was good but the beer was better.
N. C.
Food was lovely, the people were very nice and it all came quite fast! Meals are pretty big so share an entrée and have one dish each that would be enough for 2 people. There are some days where there is live music 🎶 it's lovely 😍 will definitely come back
J. H.
This is tucked away but worth seeking out. Good prices on pints of various beers etc. And stout on tap. And does meals. Quiet. Very relaxing. Dark wood everywhere. But friendly staff and very welcoming. Great place to have a slow pint and fix the world's problems. Give it a try.
D. N.
Great Irish pub! Good food, cold beer and such an amazing atmosphere.
Staff very attentive.

Wonderful service friendly staff, my daughter is anaphylactic to peanuts and the waiter spoke to the chef to ensure no cross contamination whilst cooking, food was delicious all round excellent experience highly recommended 😀 😋 👌 👍 😊
R.
Clean pub with welcoming staff. Food was okay. The batter wasn't quite cooked on my wife's fish while my Ceasar salad was delicious. Guinness was good. Reasonably expensive but pub is in a prime spot.
D. W.
Good atmosphere, although it is very dependent on what day you decide to visit. The music was not so great. However, the drinks were great. The stout is probably the best choice here although the beer is not bad either. The selection of drinks is one of the best in Southbank. Recommended if you're looking for a good night of acoustic music and great drinks.

Ate on the river side. Amazing food, great service. Awesome tables for big groups. Thanks guys
D. F.
The venue was lit with magic, the bar was filled with passionate beer. The guniess was creamy n smooth and the sirloin was mouth watering and succulent. I will be heading back soonish.
J. C.
Good "traditional pub" style. Food was delicious, great pub selections. Staff were attentive and personal.
O. C.
Regular pub fare. Live music is very loud. .. if not that into it, highly recommend you book in the restaurant section (where we went).. Also, ask the wait staff re type of oysters available before ordering so as not to get a shock at the 20c piece sized offerings at $4 each (yes, that's the size of the shells.. actual meat is like the top section of your pinkie)
N. S.
Amazing pub with attentive staff and great fare.
D. W.
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Kilkenny on tap is becoming alarmingly rare. Buy some. Now.
D. W.
Always look forward to a Guinness st PJs. Had the gui nness beef pie for lunch. A delicious and generous serving. Friendly service. Great at night too!
N. D.
So good. Garlic muscles,. Bread and chips and Guinness. Next salmon. Mm so good. Missing out. You

A couple of friends and I headed into PJ O'Brien's for dinner and were not disappointed! Two of us had the Sunday special - a full roast dinner and pint of cider for $22. The succulent slow roasted pork was served with plenty of gravy and veggies, and was complemented by the delicious apple cider. The pork crackling was perfect, but when I sampled (stole) a bite of my friend's Guinness pie, I had to concede defeat. The pie crust was flaky, and the filling was outstanding. I didn't suffer any diner's regret, however, as I know I'll be back at PJ's very soon!
P. M.
Very nice pub, great atmosphere and a good range of beers and food on the menu. I went there for dinner with work colleagues on a Wednesday night and the place was quite busy. We had a few drinks and ordered food. I ordered the steak of the day and think that the meat was a bit cold. As I ordered without chips (only salad), also thought that there was not enough salad for the size of the plate. I would return but probably just for drinks.

Stumbled upon this little slice of heaven after my wife had an anxiety attack going into an upscale Italian food place. Way better, more laid back atmosphere, and the FOOD!
MY GOD!
If you're looking for a fantastic little pub with outstanding service, food that'll knock your socks off, and drinks for days, look no further.
This was an amazing experience, the staff were friendly, food was hot and delicious, and the drinks were on point. I've no higher praise to offer. 10/10, and full marks all around.
Thanks to Aoibhin for the service!
I. I.
Lovely friendly staff, great atmosphere plus best beef and Guinness pie I've ever had
P. S.
Attended a Christmas in July lunch sitting here, was well attended. The place was buzzing, even had Santa in attendance. Good place to have a pint of Guinness. Food was good, staff were attentive and the wait to get the food to the table was not long at all. Great place to take the UK family out for a pub meal in the city!
A.
Great atmosphere, friends staff, and it was not too busy. The food was ok.
A. M.
Super friendly staff (Irish 😊). Good variety of food and specials and huge portions. The sambo I ordered was more like a ciabatta and was covered in melted cheese which I love but a bit much, as you had to eat half a plate of wedges. But a nice, fancy pub to chill.
A. L.
Dined here tonight, excellent service and food. I had great pasta with Haddock and mussels. Minor issue with one of our meals was rectified by the manager very quickly. Still very happy with service and food. Highly recommended.
J. K.
That chicken schnitzel... daaaamn. Not to be confused with their chicken parma, the schnitzel comes with gravy and bacon instead of ham.
Edges of the schnitzel are crispy and crunchy, meat is tender and not dry. $24 is a fair price. Will definitely be back to try their other offerings of Irish fare.
a.
Surprised fresh and fat Mussels pot. Taste really great. And the fish and chips is nice too.
R. R.
The ambiance was great, though the options on the lunch menu were limited. Maybe a pass.
J. T.
PJs is a great traditional Irish pub easily accessible from Southbank or the city of Melbourne. Their food is well portioned and tasty and the pub food is available late into the night to accompany your Guinness with some wedges. They have a wide range of drinks, but you’re not there for that. It’s a great place to meet friendly new people in a relaxed atmosphere and acting like the Irish do singing along to the traditional songs from their live music!
G. “. A.
Homely Irish pub with traditional food and all the drinks
G. A.
Feels like going to your friends place for drinks only there's a live band/ or solo singer guitarist, a friendly crowd, a great menu and exceptional staff.
Nice spot for a lunch catch-up, after work drinks or an all nighter.
They separate the interior into a bistro and bar. A few booths, lots of historical decorations and a large well serviced bar.
You'll be grateful for memories made here. Cheers

Pub is inside the building. The staff is very friendly and good personality. Very helpful and always happy. Food very yummy. Have Live music everyday around 9pm.
L.
Had a function there Saturday 1/5 for a celebration of life - Rebecca/Kate and Catherine were all amazing and made the process so easy. The bar staff were also fantastic, lots of food and plenty of drinks flowing. Thank you again for making our time very special.
K. W.
We had the oysters and they were incredible. Their prices are far more reasonable than other bars and restaurants around the area.
G. R.
Stopped in here for dinner and a pint (or two) before a show at the nearby Hamer Hall. I had Beef and Guinness Pie and my wife had Steak and Wings. I had no complaints with my meal and she said hers was "yummy". I tried one of her chicken wings and found them overly spicy for me (bloody hot, actually) though she likes them that way. How can you fault a pulled Guinness, so no surprises there. Reasonable atmosphere but I am over pubs with piped music that make you have to talk louder than necessary to be heard, regardless that the conversations of those at other tables are raucous anyway.
R. M.
Good value pub meal on Southbank. Nice British pub decor. Great staff. Excellent service. Some well done traditional Irish food on the menu as well as the usual pub offerings. Not too expensive. A new favourite in the city for me.
P. A.
Beautiful atmosphere..love the crafted beer & oysters. Good customer service. Its like a hidden gem of a pub amidst the modern Melbourne.
M. J.
This has to be one of my all time favourite pubs, friendly staff, awesome beer and great food. I have never had a bad meal here.
M. S.
The food here is amazing and the staff are very polite and welcoming
m. d.
I actually wrote a bad review cause I couldn't find the main door of the restaurant and thought it is closed without notice. Just received a call from their team member which explained the story. Please consider this 5 star for their follow up and customer care. I haven't tried their food yet. It will be next time :)
M. W.
Visited on a Friday night. Plenty of room to sit and eat with a nice, rowdy atmosphere. Food came quickly, was cheap (for Southbank), tasty, and a large portion size. Plenty of drinks to choose from. Would recommend!
T. F.
The food was amazing and such a great location and atmosphere. Would absolutely go again. The banoffee pie was also the best I've had, not too sweet and a great finish to the meal
s.
Attended on a Wednesday night with the family. Enjoyed the live music and great atmosphere. Have been to PJ O'Brien for many years and is still a favourite.
R. D.
Warm and cozy Irish Pub full of staff who are from the Emerald Isle and live music at times. I went there on a weekend for a late lunch with the family and just like in Ireland, you have space to bring your pram and the little one is welcome to sit. Most tables are on the smaller side but there are generous stools and they give you generous but not too big portions in large plates, just like in Ireland. They have arranged the tables in a circular shape around the Bar so at all times you can see the bar and hear the ‘Craic’. There a good mix of booths and open tables and plenty of bar stools - I didn’t see baby seats/chairs but didn’t need one as our kid d sits on chairs now. They had a good selection of beers, but came a bit short on the stout beers (Guinness, but no Murphy’s or Beamish) and no Bulmers Apple or Pear Cider (just like Ireland) - they only had Magners...which more and more is just like Ireland. Would love to go back and try more comfort foods on the menu - we had the roast chicken and veggies and mash special, fish and chips and vegetarian pasta, all great comfort foods on a chilly / rainy day. - I asked and they didn’t serve the thick Irish Brown Bread and potato leak soup you usually get (with Kerry made butter) but make up for it by having a few different people come by to check on you. No one greets when you walk in, you just find yourself a table (just like in Ireland) but there is the Gaelic Irish Greeting (“Cead Mile Failte”) in an authentic looking sign that you see when entering, just like every bar in Ireland. Prices are decent, esp. considering it is Southbank. Did not disappoint and reminded me of the 3 years I lived in Cork.
B. J.
We went here just to check if they will allow us to get in as it's St. Patricks day and their website shows they are fully booked. They allowed us to get in! It was the best day ever! Everyone's friendly and the vibe was so great... Guests were from the young adults to seniors but everyone's equally happy. I love how everyone was singing and dancing together even some of is don't even know the song. 😊
L. F.
Lovely Irish pub in the centre of Melbourne. The Guinness was grand
D. S.
Had a great night here, a few pints and a espresso martini really woke me up, the staff were really nice and the music was great! Would go again.
A. S.
Great beer as you would expect, reasonably priced good quality food, excellent service, in an “underground” dark typical Irish bar off the main walking promenade
M. H.
Been coming to this place with a couple of long time friends and it's become a tradition that we always come here whenever we catch up. An older friend has his favourite and never orders anything but the Irish stew. Quality and taste vary as they seem to change over chef once in a while. Has great atmosphere and if you want some quiet area to talk, book the restaurant side. They always have Irish backpackers working here so it does have that feel of an authentic Irish pub.
V. M.
Came here on a Thursday night as most places were closed after 12.
The place was quite lively up until closing time at 1am. Decent place to come for a casual drink if you are in the area.
D. T.
Great selection of whisky. The team are very knowledgeable as well. Of the 200+ they have I'm stock, made the perfect suggestions. Prices were very reasonable as well
C. M.
Great dark atmosphere, great pints of Guinness and great live music in the evening. They do Sports events pretty well too.
Have dined in a couple of times with the standard fare on offer. Nothing special but no complaints!
J. L.
Anyone who thinks that Irish pubs not in Ireland are a rather ridiculous pale imitation of the real thing have never visited PJ O’Brien’s. The food is outstanding and the service is warm, genuine and enough to make you ache for the Emerald Isle. It’s not easy to find but don’t give up.
I. l. (.
Good bar with live music
Prices evreage
Good beer
D. M.
Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Best Irish stew that I've tasted in years. I can highly recommend P.J O' Briens Irish Pub.
C. D.
Typical pub meals, quick service and well priced for the serving sizes.
R. C.
Never disappoints. A amazing establishment and great polite staff who can't help you out enough. Love the Irish theme and music ,especially musician Marty Kelly.
T. F.
Friendly staff and a good ambience. Unfortunately the gents toilets didn't impress me. Bin overflowing with paper towels, no paper towels and the hand drier was defective. Also it wasn't the cleanest toilet I've ever been in. The pub wasn't so busy that someone could have least made an effort to rectify these issues. Other than this it's a very nice wee pub.
G. R.
Perfect pub atmosphere. Amazing food. Great pints of mostly everything (including Guinness)
J. B.
Love this place, a little hard to find, but once you found this little gem you will love every second of your experience. Great prices, great food and just a lovely vibe
A. H.
Great atmosphere, delicious meals and friendly staff.
K. &. J. C.
Love P J O'Briens. Great place for a relaxing drink with friends and a delicious meal. Perfect for lunch or dinner.
J. E.
Dropped in for a pint of Guinness on Sunday afternoon before point to the football. Sport on tv, live music, friendly service and cold beer. Perfect!
S. M.
Noisy and seating can be a bit cramped but amazing food and drink. Service is also great. Well worth the visit if you can come in a less busy time.
B. A.
This is a great pub, serves great meals and a good range of beverages. Just not during peak times (weekend nights and after/drying sporting events) it does get very busy and laid and becomes standing room only very quickly. But this is fairly standard fair for an Irish pub and still a very enjoyable place to go with a group of friends. Have been there many times staff and service are great.
K.
Great pub! Strongly recommended. Typical Irish pub with a nice and "relaxed-busy" atmosphere. We enjoyed an excellent dinner, where the service was very attentive and charming. Our compliments for the hard-working and friendly staff.
E. C.
Busy pub, due to good food at reasonable prices and daily specials. The staff were attentive when seated, but didn't allow enough time to peruse menu. Were asked twice in less than a minute. We asked for a couple of minutes, but then nothing. No service. After 15 minutes of trying to gain attention, we went up to bar, where wait staff then came to our table and very curtly took our order.
Good food, decent serving, recommend. However order when you're seated, or you might not get served at all. Except by an annoyed waitress.
D. W.
Good Guinness, good food , good music, good company, great night.
B. A.
A great place to grab a pint, and catch up with friends/family. Food is fantastic and the Guinness is always fresh
B. F.
Found this pub on our last night in Melbourne great staff and special for Sunday was excellent. Had a vegan in our group and also catered for her. Not sure the irish waitresses name but she was super went above and beyond to serve us. Highly recommend this pub. Get there early get a seat and listen to live music can’t get any better then that thanks PJ’s
M. F.
My wife and I enjoyed a great value meal here today. I had the fish and chips and she had the seafood pasta meal. Great value lunch specials for $18 which included a drink (beer, wine or soft drink). Friendly, efficient service was welcome. We have dined here before and will be back again. Keep up the quality service and food.
y.
Love coming here. Great atmosphere on game event nights and the live music is awesome. Usually packed and customers are friendly and well behaved with good security. Food is availabele but I haven't tried it yet.
J. R.
Very nice and cozy pub with a great atmosphere. The starters are quite good, I really enjoyed the wedges with curry sauce. The mains here have been fairly average and a fair bit overpriced though.
I'd highly recommend this joint for drinks with snacks, but if you're looking for some good meals I'd say look elsewhere.
S. N.
Had the Irish chicken schnitzel. The curry just didn't fit for me. But the chicken was tasty.
T. S.
We recently celebrated my husbands Birthday by hiring the front dining section. We love this place😘. All of our guests had a terrific time. The food was delicious and the staff were warm, accommodating and friendly. Thanks PJ’s for an unforgettable night. We will be back.
R. E.
Excellent food and excellent service, our only disappointment was the music. We went on a Sunday night especially because it advertised " traditional Irish music. " Unfortunately, although the music may have been Irish, it was not traditional. We were hoping to here the likes of Galway Bay, The wild Rover, Danny Boy etc. I guess they must cater to the majority of their patrons who were much younger than us. Luckily the meal was excellent and the staff were utterly delightful.
K.
We can't speak highly enough of this place. Every time we visit Melb, it's our go-to for a pint and or a meal. The staff are so friendly and accommodating! Even the security guys are smiling and friendly.
The food is so reasonably priced and delicious. I had steak last night and it was divine.
We went to watch Hey Charger last night and danced the night away. We will be back as soon as we can!
K. D.
How do they find so many charming Irish staff! Glasses never empty long and a great Irish pub. Food was ordered and delivered super quickly. Great range of beers on tap and plenty of sensational Australian wine - including a Ripper wine from Seppelt Wines in Great Western
C. M. H.
I love this place. It’s so nice to find a city centre pub that is focused on giving their guests a good time.
The staff who are a really friendly bunch ,do their very best to look after you.
Highly recommended if you like a few laughs and a few Irish jigs in a non judgmental environment.
D. T.
Attended lunchtime on Thursday , the staff especially the female roving staff member were friendly and attentive , a great place to just relax and appreciate history.
N. B.
Absolutely fantastic!
Meals were delicious, battered fish was perfectly crunchy and accompanied with some chips and garden salad. Calamari was mouth watering and even if we had have preferred salt+pepper rather than the lemon pepper on offer was still a perfect accompaniment to our main.
For a Saturday lunch time it was fairly quiet, but our waitress (who resembled Snow White from 'Once Upon A Time ') was perfectly attentive. The barman was fantastic.
Will be back again.
D. U.
Good for a dram and a pint on a Sunday afternoon, if you're waiting for someone.
Plenty of good seating for a quiet hour with a book and a drink.
Music isn't loud enough to be intrusive. Crowd is mellow. Staff are friendly and know their business.
T. _.
Great atmosphere and nice food and friendly staff.
C. B.
Staff were excellent! Main a bit average had a Christmas Eve dinner booked online. I was meant to be having "wild mushroom shepherd's pie" only not a mushroom in sight. Eggplant/ lentils/ tomatoes, a bit heavy on potato & cheese topping & no crispiness at all to that but otherwise tasty. Dessert was nice
A. P.
Atmosphere great, service good, but food disappointing for the price. I ordered the mussels which cost $24 & I only got 8 mussels though they were big the meat inside was normal size. The chips & bread filled me up. My friend had the special $20 porter steak which was rubbery she could hardly cut it. My other friend had a vegetable salad which she said did not have much taste. This wasn't a special and I can no longer see this on your menu. Disappointed.
L. T.
Fantastic Irish Pub.
Loved the feel, music, food and dricks at this this place.
Would highly recommend
M. P.
Another great Irish pub for lunch and drinks around the south bank area. Food is outstanding and fairly priced. No Jim Beam though which I guess totally acceptable given its a Irish pub. ;). Have not done dinner there but I assume the lunch menu is the same. Staff are totally awesome!
E. Z.
Loved the nice corners and fun vibes!
P. D.
Loved this pub, great old fashioned atmosphere.
M. G.
Been coming here for nearly 2 years. The atmosphere is fantastic. It's dark and dingy. Exactly what you want in a pub. They have a good selection of drinks on tap and have a lot of Irish staff which really helps make the Irish pub feel. There are also lots of little booths and nooks which add to the cosy feel.
The pork sausages and parmas are great for lunch.
D. S.
What a lovely Irish pub.We were there for their Sunday lunch specials. My friend enjoyed het Sunday roast and i enjoyed my Vegetarian Shepherd Pie.Delish and reasonably priced Love the Irish music, vibes and the staff's beautiful Irish accents. Its a family friendly place for Sunday afternoon. Great service and beautiful fun filled experience 👍👍
M. D.
Haven't been here for many years but managed to pop by after the footy. Great atmosphere however bar staff need to be a little more attentive. All that aside, great food and music. Will be back!
M.
This place is awesome! Have been there heaps. Brilliant food, variety of beers, great service, and all the staff have an Irish accent. What more do u want?👍😁
M. D.
Whats a spot. Typical dark Irish pub friendly staff and great food/beers with live music on Sundays
P. M.
We stumbled across this pub by accident but we ended up having just the best meals! The service was quick, the live music was great and the prices were fantastic for the size of the meals you get! We will definately go back to this pub next time we are visiting Melbourne.
S.
Very nice food, staff amd atmosphere. Only major problem is menu selection, the wait and price for food. There was also a slight lingering smell of beer, which I personally didn't like. Overall a great place to eat
S. S.
I don't know.how.they manage to import Clonakilty Black Pudding, but yum!
S. G.
Atmosphere of the pub, especially once it got to a certain time and the patrons rolled in, was really good. I stayed for far too long, but I did have a wonderful night. My only criticism was my meal was a little bland and lacked flavor. I had the beef brisket with a red wine jus. I am not a picky eater, but it was worth commenting on as this was my only let down for the night. The people I was with really enjoyed there meals, so I recommend giving this irish pub a look. That is if you enjoy irish pubs.
M. M.
I was super impressed with this place, the food was awesome, they even did table service for us. I had the choxken schnitzel with curry sauce and cheese n bacon and it waa quite a large serving of food. Atmosphere was good with lots of private booth areas to chat away. The staff were all very nice and accomodating i will be definitely be going again.
B. M.
Fun place with fun people. The live band were smashing out some favourites and the staff were attentive and friendly. It left me with a warm feeling on an otherwise 'freeze your a**e off' evening. I will be going back tonight.
K. S.
Staff were beyond amazing! I took my 6 month old here to meet a friend for a midweek lunch and was feeling nervous about how my baby would react. The restaurant itself was lovely and quiet, the staff helped me pick food to cater for a few allergies. They even went so far has to hunt down almond milk for my coffee because I can't have dairy or soy. I can't speak highly enough of this place, everyone including bubs had a great time.
P. V.
Been here every day for 3 weeks for food and beers. Theres a guy joe Hooper was very accomodating and if he wasnt the bar man I'd have him as a son. So polite never met a guy like it his manners is impeccable and I cant recommend this bar enough.
P. G.
Booked a table for lunch on Easter Sunday with my sister. The staff instantly made the extra effort needed for the wheelchair. I ordered the Brisket and my sister ordered the seafood chowder. Both were flawless and reasonably priced. Brisket is a very unforgiving cut. The Guinness here tastes good. Unlike many places in the southern hemisphere were it can taste slightly off.
Oysters are fresh and staff work their arses off.
Will visit again.
K. A.
Great Irish Pub with live bands all night (I was there on a Sunday). Great Guinness beer and great food. A must go-to pub if you are into that kind of atmosphere.
Highly recommended.
S. C.
Great Irish pub! Has it all in terms of atmosphere, live music and... pints! Was served by a lovely guy called Evan who was very welcoming and chatty. Will definitely be back.
J. K.
Good Irish bar with live music when I visited, then know how to serve you and they're very lovely people in general. Do take in mind that if you're a a smoker that you have to go outside to smoke, no worries though.
S. S.
Guaranteed a great time here! From their perfect pint of Guinness, superb live music and delicious food, definitely one of my favourite Pubs in Melbourne!
D. S.
Great atmosphere & good servings
O. C.
Went on St Patrick's Day so hard to tell what it would be like normally. Was super crowded but you could still move. Guiness was good. Didn't have snacks available til 4 that day so no idea about food. Stage was super small and in a weird space for a place that prides itself on live music.
p. w.
Cosy pub buried in Southbank. Quiet at present due to COVID. Good pub food.
B. E.
Went for a birthday celebration. Place is an old fashioned pub but trendy. Food was really nice and there was a good range even for the vegan in our group. Price of food is good. I will return when i return to melbourne
J. R.
Fantastic atmosphere with an amazing crowd. Everybody was singing along to the live band, who were playing a great playlist.
Feels very much like an old pub inside. Lots of different beer available! Will definitely be back.
R. T.
I had booked a table for 4 in the dining room as four friends were meeting for dinner. Unfortunately we were placed in the very noisy Side Bar. There's great atmosphere there particularly when the international rugby is on but it was very noisy. Ireland beat Australia 20 - 16! The bacon steak was far too salty. But the carcassonne was very tasty!
A. B.
Absolutely fantastic. Think Fun Irish music, big quality meals at pub price, Big Stout beer, laughter and larikins. Wish I lived in Melbourne so I could keep going back.
D.
Decent Guinness👍
P. W. C.
This place is good for st patrick day, nice mood, a pint for 9 the cheapest, and live music, the staff is great, the attention its very kind! They give you a guiness caps and hats, it's near to flinders station, cheers!
R. G.
Wed special of $20 for a porterhouse with guiness butter and a glass of wine/pot of guiness. A decent sized steak with great value for a meal. Service to order is usually rather slow as there are only one or two waitresses mending the entire floor and can be rather difficult to get their attention. It gets rather crowded during dinner time as well.
r. m.
Great ambience and moderately priced food and drink.
M. P. K.
A great irish pub down by the riverside in the cbd. Located at Southgate. Live music every night ( I think its every night :)) Good food and many different beers on tab. Friendly staff, nice and cosy during the week and kinda full-on on weekends.
Great pub!!
F. o. P.
Went for Sunday lunch as NGV was closed , roast pork was quite good. Service good.
D. R.
I love coming here for lunch as it isn't busy. I like the cosy feel both in the pub and the dining area. Curry pumpkin soup is delicious! The staff are always friendly.
P. H.
Beautiful atmosphere. Sat on the outer edge where we could admire the view and still be protected from the rain by the awnings and pull up windows. Only negative was the pizzas were a bit thin with the toppings.
S. W.
What can I say, my favourite pub of all time. Love this place
A.
Amazing food, very large serving sizes, great value for money, exceptionally good service, great music choice
Steak was cooked perfectly, the mash potato was fluffy and delicious, amazing pepper gravy, chicken Parma was crispy and flavourful
Definitely returning at some point. 10/10
S. M.
I got the kangaroo with gravy, amazingly delicious. Never had kangaroo taste so good! My girlfriend had the vegetable shepherd's pie and she was equally pleased.
A. S.
My husband & I spent a lovely afternoon here recently & were served by Trisha Teahan who looked after us so very well.
We were quite impressed. Nothing was another to her.She even gave us advice on places to see.
The food was well presented & very tasty.
We will be recommending this place to our friends & people we know who will be holidaying there later In the year.
Trisha is a real Asset to O ' Briens.
Hope to return someday.
C. G.
This isn't a "happening" place and that's why I like it. There's always room. There's always Guinness on tap. Half price oysters on Fridays. One of my favourite non-gig venues though there's live music later on. Loses a star because sometimes they're just one barman short.
D. W.
I love this place, perfect location close to work! The food is amazing and as are the drinks. I would rate it a 5 but a few of the staff are pretty rude and you sometimes stand around waiting for ages to order or pay whilst they chat amongst themselves
A. J.
A good Irish themed pub, Good food, Good drinks and good service.
C. L. R.
Great atmosphere and comfortable seating. The calamari and cheesy garlic bread starters are fresh and quick to arrive to the table. Guinness and beef pie was very filling and delicious.
A. C.
Great atmosphere and good food. Live Irish music is a bonus.
B. C.
Almost felt like it was pre-c days. Grwat atmosphere and always great food and beer
S. M.
As an Irishman you really feel at home here. The food is delicious and there's always live music on the weekend. Would really recommend this pub.
K. G.
Friendly professional staff that make you feel like you're in a Dunlin pub without the hassle of a real pub.
Good meals and drink selection. A great place for lunch or dinner.
R. F.
Nice place. Really friendly staff both behind bar and serving.
D. K.
Smooth Guinness at the right temperature. Service was a little cold but hey everyone has their off days
H.
Great little pub with delicious food. Only negative would be service in the bar is very poor and some staff not trained properly to pour a Guinness.
D. M.
Great Irish pub in Southgate Area BUT...
Why serve a $20 Mojito without a straw? It took about 15 minutes (almost forgot we ordered them) and served in a foot long elongated glass with chunky crushed ice, mint, lime - an excellent Mojito (as I am a bartender myself) but how is it possible to drink (looking as decent as possible) without a straw??
Went to the side bar and politely asked for straws.. was replied "Ughh We have no straws here" by a four eyed girl behind the bar. Not even an alternative offered. Just plain NO. Went to the other main bar and was again told by the man who served my mojito "No we ran out of straws" WTH??????
It was impossible to drink so I went to the side bar again to try to ask for HELP on how I can possibly drink this tall chunky cocktail - maybe they could transfer it in another glass at least? And alas, she had straws!! In a span of 2 minutes from last talking to her.
DISAPPOINTING TO SEE THEY WERE USING PLASTIC STRAWS AS WELL.
I. R.
Good service, Good food
D. G.
Only had a couple of Guinness but was served with a smile. Will be back to try the food.
M. C.
I had the Pumpkin Soup. It was good but could do with less salt. The rest of my family had the Main Courses. Its slightly pricey but understandable...
Its Melbourne City and most things are not cheap compare to where I lived.
W. H.
Awesome Staff, Gr8 Atmosphere, Perfect Guinness. 👌👌👌
C. B.
It's OK. Maybe I'm just not a pub person, and I was there to escape a rainy day—might as well have a pint of Guiness. Might have left a different first impression if I were there in a more social setting. :)
D. G.
Good Irish pub, reasonable prices and good food plus absolutely amazing service
V. N.
I've had the pleasure of enjoying what PJ O'Brien has to offer. This place has the works the authentic brand of Irish and it almost feels like you are there fro the live band to the staff who are very forthcoming and honest. I would definitely recommend PJ O'Briens for a family outing or to just chill with your girlfriend's.
Thank you for your amazing hospitality
I. C.
It was good. A quiet night after the football. Not crowded staff were good.
J. Z.
Attended this venue Friday 24th and Saturday 25th August 2018 good vibe great live music
Only down side is not a lot of dance room near stage when quite busy otherwise great
Also enjoyed a nice alcohol Furphy's on tap as well a few times over the weekend
open late will go again
A.
Looks like a great atmosphere and they have great beers selection but every time we are here it is so busy you usually cannot ever get inside. Make a booking otherwise you will need to go somewhere else
R. W.
Its a good staple Melbourne/Southbank classic. Nothing wrong with anything they do. Good but not imaginative beer, honest food, nice pub.
E. a. T. a.

L. G.
It was quiet overall took quite a while to be served bar staff busy chatting to each other

Great place for either a drink or with food their parmas are fantastic. This place gets packed but the staff there are always very accommodating to your needs Highly recommend especially if heading to a show or to footy
M. P.
Great pub for a few after work. A bit noisy and nowhere to sit. It's pretty much standing room only. Beer is cold, wet and tastes like beer.
J. T.
Great Irish pub...it looks like any other but just has atmosphere..reasonably priced beer and standard Irish pub grub.Fun place.
S. D.
Great service. Popped in for a drink, always friendly staff.
N. S.
Great bar, good beers, good food and love the live music here
H. H.
Great Food with $20 lunch. In the heart of Southbank yet with guiness in hand and the Irish accent, you feel like you've entered a portal to Ireland.
Y. D.
It was good place to visit. Service on high level. Quite crowded place. Unfortunately oysters finished and we missed it, but ate quite good dinner (sausages).
L. M.
Great food, great atmosphere. Were very busy but still were served quickly. Prices are reasonable for food and beverages. Highly recommended
D. K.
Staff were very attentive and made this a nice little experience in Melbourne, taking some of the service you would see in Ireland ( pints delivered to your table) . Food was ok.
C. W.

It's a strange thing when you visit an Irish pub in Australia and it's staffed by actual Irish folk. Nice pub and friendly staff. A great place to stop for a pint.

The Hand Cut Potatoes were my favourite. The Chicken Parmigiana was probably Thigh. Was ok but I would go back for the Potatoes.
L. M.
Do not think the mussels are worthwhile compared to French version, little appealing flavour. Other items perfectly good.
J. D.
Decent spot to grab a beer in Southgate. The venue catered to the older crowd on a Saturday night but was still busy with a live band and small dance floor.
R. C.
