Voted into the 10 Best Irish Pubs In The World (Outside Ireland) by The Irish Times, and the only venue in Australia to make it to the list. It has every reason for me to come here for a good Magners. Small space, with a very cozy environment, and super friendly staff... They have a good selection of beers and aren't bothered with food options... which is less drama! One of my favourite spots in Melbourne.

Great place, trad Irish music, warm friendly staff, toasties, Guinness, even a cup of Irish Barry’s tea in a pot. Lots of Irish folks there, everyone friendly. Fun atmosphere!

Had no booking but the lady at the bar kindly gave me and the lady a table, and we had the best Guinness Stout you could ask for in Melbourne!! Creamy, smooth, and delicious!! Ladies behind the counter were friendly and hospitable too. Would recommend for anyone who needed a place to sit down and have a pint to some good music and an unbeatable atmosphere :)

Five stars because one cannot give six or more. Lovely, ambient, almost womb-like interior. Toilets, though small, are spotlessly clean and imaginatively decorated. A cigarette machine for those who still fall from grace, and a juke box with an eclectic selection of rock and folk music. Cleverly arranged space for drinking: stools at the bar, raised tables with stools and low tables with padded seating. So much for the physical facilities; for the thirsty traveller the drink is the thing. There's a selection of draught pale ales, draught cider and Kilkenny Irish ale; the real kicker is the Guinness. In my opinion (37 years of drinking Guinness on three continents) this is a Good Pint. It cannot be Mulligan's of Poolbeg Street, but it is well cared for and well served. Outside of Ireland (and some pubs in the UK) it is as good as it gets, and far better than one usually hopes for. There is an intelligent selection of wines to suit most palates and at very reasonable prices. There are whiskies to suit all tastes, including Redbreast and Midleton. To provide soakage there are toasted sandwiches (good ham, good cheese), homemade pickled egg served with Chef brown sauce, and pickled onions accompanied by small cubes of good cheese. In my experience the service has been very good: cheerful, friendly (but not familiar) and attentive. 'The Irish Times' newspaper rates this place as one of the best ten Irish pubs outside Ireland. It is not hard to see why.

First time visitors to Drunken Poet and we really enjoyed our afternoon our afternoon of live music and great Guinness. Owner Siobhann is friendly and welcoming. The pub itself is tiny but it made the whole experience very intimate and a far cry from a big beer farm... Highly recommended...

Can’t look past a bar maiden who passionately stands for something. Don’t get much of that these days. Refund the shots though.

Best mix of live music and banter you’ll find anywhere in Melbourne, excellent bar staff, but eat before you get here. The QV Markets are across the road so fill your boots there. Was curious about this place, The Drunken Poet, so had to pay a visit, and so glad we did, and I reckon it’s our new little local. We called to make make a booking, left a msg, and Siobhan tried 3 times to contact us-that’s well impressive! The ambiance is excellent, music, Tayto chips, amazing toasties, and a few frosty beverages later, we left, ready to make a booking for the next visit. Siobhan and the other bar person, I feel awful as didn’t get her name, were very welcoming, friendly and made the night all the better. Absolutely a definite revisit.

You Can't Lose at the Poet I spilt my guinness last night because I bumped into the end of my own table. I thought, I've made a right mess of this. While I was wallowing in sorrow, I heard the rustling of a scamper, and the squeaking of a mop. Not only this, but my guinness had been replaced - free of charge! I couldn't bring myself to accept it, but this bartender is not one to be argued with! Such ferocious kindness! Now, the music was an absolute delight, and I'm swooning in gulps of guinness so I thought 'Heck, I'll thank this Esmeralda playing the tunes by way of a glass of wine'. No sooner than I've placed the wine down before her, she produces for me a CD of those very tunes she was offering. What an exchange! All I'm trying to say is: you can't lose at the poet.

This is the best pub in Australia. Siobhan who runs it is one of the nicest people you could meet and she has created the nicest vibe in Melbourne. Food consists of great toasted cheese and ham sandwiches and taytos etc. What more could you ask for.? The best Guinness outside of Dublin. A great and eclectic bunch of regulars and tourists who all mingle and chat (if you want). It's a great place for trad music on a Friday night or other live bands and singer songwriter types. There is no bright lights or tvs to distract . It's just a proper pub. Thank god for it! Ps great place for a tinder date as its nicely lit so your photos from 10 years ago on your profile will match.A++

Very cool Irish pub right across the road from the Queen Vic Market. They have live music every night of the week and the Guinness of course is excellent. The location is relatively central to the city, and if you are staying central too, it is included within the free tram zone in Melbourne.

I enjoyed visiting the Drunken Poet for St. Paddy’s Day recently. One staff member was extremely rude to me, however. When I said I wanted to order a cocktail she full on scoffed at me and said ‘yeah, we don’t do cocktails’, and looked away from me. I was so shocked! In the past I have enjoyed a nice afternoon with the funky British decor and hoping it was a freak occurrence because it was busy.

I performed in the open mic here and enjoyed the facilities and Mornington IPA beer. I admit, I wasn't flattered when I saw the bar filled with much older men. But I'm happy I got a free drink from one of them, who was exceptionally handsome! One of them read their poems as well, and it did sound like he wrote it when he was drunk. So "The Drunken Poet" is really a perfect name for this place. (I'm sorry, to whoever I just insulted) But really, It is nostalgic. Every time I come back to this place I'll remember: Open mic, beer, and drunken old people reading their poems. Toodles!
