Comments of The Oxford Scholar
G. I.
The pub has improved a lot in just the past few years. The selection of food and drinks is interesting and fairly priced. They finally worked out that they should be the official pub for the University campus next door, and I appreciate the discount that I get as an alumnus. Next time I'm in Melbourne I will make the effort to come back.

I came in on a Monday night and not only was the food fantastic but the staff were so friendly and helpful when it came to helping me pick from their great selection of beers on tap! It was just the sort of post lockdown pub experience I was looking for! Can't wait to come back here!!
T. N.
Great service, kid friendly pub with good meals at reasonable prices.
This is the second time that we came to the pub.
The first time I totally forgot to take photos but we had a classic cheese burger and it was really good. It was a little on the smaller size. The chips are done in the same style as Schnitz so they were very delicious. For dessert, we had the sticky date pudding. The presentation was great but for me, sticky date needs ice cream or cream to offset the sweetness. It was still good though.
This time around we had the steak and the oven baked fish. There was an earlier review that had mentioned that the gravy was runny. While this is true, it still tastes ok. Note that the steak only comes with pepper sauce. Sadly the oven baked fish was a bit small for the price but it still tasted good. The fish itself was a size fillet just the rest of the sides were on the small side.
I have to give special mention to the service. Both times that I have received exceptional service even though I had my son in tow. Today our meals were running a little late and the bartender was kind enough to come out and give us an update.
The ambiance and space is quite nice. I remember what the pub was like before the renovation and this is a huge improvement. On Saturday nights, they are usually playing the best of the 90s and 00s music.
Finally I need to mention that while the pub is child friendly, it is not baby friendly. I didn't see any baby chairs but if your child is old enough to sit on a normal chair, you will be fine.
I recommend this pub for anyone looking for a good comfortable setting and good food. We will be back.

I think everyone who goes to RMIT hangs around at this place. I always have beers here but I loved the espresso martini when I tried it for the first time. I hope they have more karaoke nights in the future.
S.
This a really good pub. Funky atmosphere, great decor (kudos to the designer), great selection of beers and the food is above competent. You definitely feel like you get your money's worth. The lady who brought over the meal was bubbly, friendly and helpful. The one star off is cause the guy who initially served me at the bar treated me as if I was a uni student, but, when I presented as friendly and said I wasn't a uni student he changed his tune. Semantics perhaps, but, overall a positive experience.
B. D.
Used the event rooms and the service and food was excellent. A great night. Wheel chair accessible as well
K.
I come here regularly with one of my Uni mates. This is our go to pub; really like the food and a great choice of beers on tap. There is one Asian girl that works there who is always so friendly, helpful and smiling making a very good atmosphere. Always look forward to visiting this place, highly recommend.
K. S.
Would have been a five, bar staff terrific, great beers and good atmosphere. Food for three of us no worries, my nachos and pulled pork (paid for) had no pulled pork. Wait staff said would be fixed, nothing, when reminded said she had taken it up with manager. Nothing heard, couldn’t be bothered with hassle but a disappointing feature of the evening.
A. M.
The ambience - great!
The beers on tap - passably good!
The food - tasty BUT here's the ringer -
An entree sized portion of crispy(not) calamari will set you back 16 dollars. What you expect on a cold rainy Saturday evening is a reasonable portion of hot crispy calamari.
What you get is six pieces of blandly seasoned rubbery calamari rings accompanied by a saving grace of tasty dip and beautifully pickled cucumber and cauliflower. Melbourne's cbd has a number of examples of great food that does not pretend.
Definitely recommend for the ambience and vibe but I'd say stick to the chips and burgers.
C. M.
Great building and vibe. Highly recommend the soft shell crab burger. Delicious.
J. F.
My workmate and I have made this our regular haunt based on the vast selection of beers on tap alone. The beers change often and are nearly always good picks. The place is huge, good choice of seating from cozy booths to heated tables out on Swanston. Finally, the toilets are quite fancy. Make sure to visit.
F. M.
Such an amazing and friendly staff and nice place specially for birthday or any other functions. Not very big place but very welcoming. Had great time for My daughter birthday. Thank you " " The Oxford School "
J. F.
Shared some delicious nachos with BBQ beef add on and it did not disappoint! Great friendly staff too. A much enjoyed afternoon gap filler.
C. F.
Great bar. Very nice decor and top notch bathrooms. Various food and drink offerings. Great price for RMIT students. Decent price for everybody else. Very quiet weekdays so if you are looking for a relaxed destination with no drawbacks head on over.
J. L.
Shared some delicious nachos with BBQ beef add on and it did not disappoint! Great friendly staff too. A much enjoyed afternoon gap filler.
D. G.
Nice bar that's been done up. Very clean and open spaces, great selection on tap and stuff were super friendly and service was good.
H.
The staff here are wonderful and the music is totally polarising. The dungenous bathrooms are down two flights of stairs and behind multiple doors, it didn't feel safe.
B. M.
University pub fully and tastefully renovated. Nice open feel and pleasant atmosphere. Range of upmarket pub food. Daily specials. Discount for RMIT staff and students. Good range of beers on tap. Friendly and helpful staff. Good place to catchup with friends for a drink.
J. B.
Newly renovated, the Oxford scholar is a great venue.
I've now been there twice, the first on a busy Friday evening. The staff are attentive and the food is very good. We came for lunch on a second occasion - the Parma is very good, but the fries were a little bit of a let down - they say 'salt and vinegar' fries, but taste like regular chips.
The beer selection on tap is great.
Looking forward to being a regular!
F.
love this place. the reno job is fantastic and they have a pool table.
have eaten here a few times now, the brisket burger is the best burger I've ever eaten. it is mouth watering.
so good to have a new pub to go to, love the overall vibe of this place. definitely worth try!!!!! my friends and I are loving it
E. G.
I organised a 30th birthday party at The Oxford Scholar and was thrilled. From the initial enquiry and through planning the event, every aspect of organising the event was simple. All the staff were amazing and just super friendly and accommodating and made the night incredible. I would absolutely recommend The Oxford Scholar to anyone looking to host a function.
J. B.
A very thoughtful refurb makes this a great place to congregate. Meals were nice, prepare to pay a little more than average, but quality and taste is up there equally. Nice range of beers on tap to satisfy the hipster in all of us.
J. B.
So glad to see an old pub restored and looking so great. Food is really great and a good modern selection. Staff where really friendly and a good selection of beers. Loved the new fit out. Has become a lunch regular place for us.
C. B.
Amazing ambiance, lovely staff and excellent food. I enjoy their Trivia Nights, do give it a try if you're into trivia.
N. A.
I used to frequent the Oxford Scholar back in my Uni days. Recently I went back for a function and was completely blown away with the new renovations! The vibe of this old beauty has been completely rejuvenated and topped off with great service and really delicious food. Thinking of having my husbands 50th birthday here as it also has function rooms and yummy foods for events. So glad its reopened. The owners have done an awesome job.
N. K.
Beautifully renovated, I have not been here in years but was pleasantly surprised to see the modern renovations giving the pub a cosy feel while still having plenty of seating. Large list of drinks is available.
Wednesday nights is trivia night too.
R. C.
Nice, spacious with good selection of food and drink. Good discounts if you're a current RMIT student too.
Where's the pool table though? That sh*t was pretty much the highlight.
We miss you pool table.
S. K.
Drinks and service was fantastic. Steaks not so great.
L. W.
Recently renovated and beautifully fitted out. Loved the layout- felt like they considered all the different reasons as to why you would attend the venue. The food was great, the staff were friendly and the drinks went down easily. Will certainly be back.
F. H.
Loved it. Great staff, vibes and pub food. Rmit students and staff get discount it's great
M. U.
Absolutely rate this pub. It's got the expensive look with reasonable prices. The food was great with a good variety to choose from. I really recommend the poke bowl! Would definitely go back.
S. J.
Went to an event on level 1. Great space for the event. Staff were fantastic, friendly and attentive.
J. R.
Chilled easy uni pub vibe. No pretense.
R. O.
A very nice venue. Quality renovation earlier this year has definitely given it a nice quality feel. Friendly staff and a good range of drinks and food. Live music too on a Friday evening.
j. k.
Had a late lunch here after the movies. Love the new look, great friendly staff, quick service and the steak sanger is to die for would recommend to anyone. I downloaded the app and got the discount within 5 mins. Will return to make my way through the burger menu.
s. p. r.
Situated among RMIT university buildings this place is in close proximity to the Melbourne central as well. A cozy place with space for a group to meet, have a chat, a drink, a snack or a meal. The general set up and services are of decent quality.
A. P.
A short-time-ago this inner-city stalwart was tired, worn out, and literally on its last legs! After a significant refurbishment, The Oxford Scholar Hotel has a brand new lease on life. The spaces are comfortable, the atmosphere is terrific, and you will find an extensive craft beer selection - in the 'alehouse' tradition. There's a great food menu, with a 15% discount for RMIT employees (both academic and administrative), as well as for all undergraduate, postgraduate, and vocational students, via The Oxford Scholar 'app.' Get along! P.S. I have not been paid for this review, well okay, I did receive a healthy discount on a 'Classic Scholar Parma' which truely was next level!
F. C.
Lovely place to chill after work!
Wish they would get a takeaway license though, as the food portions are huuuge and I feel bad that my unfinished meal is going to waste :(
Edit: they offer takeaway boxes now (thanks Evan!), here's a 5* instead!
A. B.
Standard uni pub, cheap food and beer. You get what you pay for with the food (steak and chips is literally steak on a handful of chips, plus a packet version of whatever sauce you order), but it was cooked as we ordered it, and not a bad piece of meat. If you feel like old school no frills pub food in an environment to match (which I do, from time to time) this works.
S. C.
There is sooo much I could say about the newly revamped scholar -- lack of ambiance blaring 70s pop and service that is lacking in warmth and charm -- but I will simply say that for a university bar, the prices are way over the top. $11 for a schooner of 4 pines and that includes an RMIT related discount. Food is similarly over priced. Mind you, I am sure executive types will love this place...
S. L.
Food is good, good variety of beer, staff are nice, only the toilets are in the basement where you'll have to walk through stairs and two doors, particularly no signs when you get out, so don't get to the wrong door on your way out
E. D.
There is one hot Scottish barman in there made me laugh so hard i nearly peeed my pants. Super tap list. Great food. Great quiz with an ace host.
C. R.
Nice and trendy pub in the middle of CBD!
S. B.
Nice bar, good food, good drink variety.
O. A.
The place is just awesome, staff are warm and friendly, service is prompt and efficient! Above everything else, the food is really great! Parma Wednesdays are just worth your money - big serving and delish!
P. P.
Great pub, right at RMIT, so it's perfect for a drink or two after classes
B. C.
Great place to have lunch, drinks and meet with colleagues and friends.
R. P.
Good spot for a quick pint. The bar guy said the Globe Draught is made in Brunswick, but Google tells me it's made in Korea?! Quaffable stuff, but left me wondering how much the staff know. On another visit they had the lovely Two Birds Bantam IPA on tap, so another star for that!
D. B.
How many evenings after Uni I have spent at the Oxford Scholar cannot be counted, but what the Scholar is a shadow of its former self. RMIT have taken over the land, and knocked most of the building down. Gone is the games room, the covered courtyard and the outside heated area. It is only are a quarter of the size it used to be. It really is a shame.
I attended on a Saturday evening. One of our party stated that she felt strange being in a pub where there weren't other customers. The pub is now a sports bar. We had a meal, were as the other few customers came in to watch the football on the big screen. The meals are average counter meals, cheep and large. The meals aren't really anything to write about. The chips the meals were served with were below par and had a powdery texture. The coconut prawns were overcook, which was clear as soon they landed on the table, and the wedges matched, leaving a carbon aftertaste.
Dinning there isn't the best experience, with the football being played so loud at times it was hard to hear what the person on the the other side of the table was saying. So, we headed out elsewhere for drinks, and others headed down Swantson Street to meals.
It is disheartening what has happened to the Oxford Scholar, and the name suggest it is generally populated by the Uni crowd, though the owners seems more intent on making it a sports bars. The best part of the Oxford is the memories of previous experiences there.
S. A.
Had the best meal here with friends - thanks to the staff for a memorable night! Impressive fit-out. Best steak I've had in a long time.
S. S.
had a lunch here, very reasonable, very tasty great pub food. thats as complex as it need to be. Service was great, friendly staff, and since then gone for odd drink in here and always been a 'proper pub' experience. Reminds me of the 'old winchester' pub in Shaun of the dead for some reason (minus the zombies!)
K. N.
OK meals, traditional "pub grub", although a little overpriced for the quality. Overall there is too much sports and betting for my liking. Some people are into that though, so each to their own.
W. H.
The food and atmosphere were great. Great range of beers. The staff were very friendly. I highly recommend The Oxford Scholar to anyone.
A. r.
Great ambience, fantastic cocktails and service, a bit pricing for a night out
A. H.
Good place to go for food or a drink after work or school. It is also not too far away from tram/train
J. J.
Nice experience a change to the place has lifted the atmosphere now will be an iconic location for RMIT.
A. H.
Just another "modern" pub... Private function, the food was good, and I know the "Oxford Hotel " of my student youth is far from many people's cup of tea,but was fun in the day... Cheap beer and plenty of it... Not now, more beer taps than people and "brioche Thai chicken sliders with kayle and garlic aoli"... "Back in my day...."
J. G.
The Ox is a Melbourne university student institution. Still under the same ownership fr the last 24 years it is a quiet hang out for uni students and oldies in town to take a punt at the TAB. It no longer has a beer garden and is in dire need of a facelift but still does reasonable business with the students from RMIT across the street. The food is pretty damn average, don't bother with the steak sandwich, you will be disappointed.
d. m.
Amazing venue, fun atmosphere, staff are on point and know their stuff. Best fit out in the city! Will definitely be coming back!
N. P.
The food here is always great, staff are very friendly and the discount options available are great for locals and RMIT staff/students/alumni.
Strongly recommend the parma!
M. N.
Such a cosy spot in RMIT campus for a drink! Food is excellent.
V. A.
Such a great place! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, comfy and spacious room.. Thought they closed for renovations, turns out it might be permanent. What a shame.
K. A.
Amazing place to have food and drinks with friends!
L. M.
Just an average pub/Parma joint in the city. Not a great choice of drinks but good if you're trying to find somewhere that will accommodate a large party of people.
K. W.
Nothing special but can't beat the proximity to uni. Wings were not good at all. Nice renovation though, looks decent.

G. K.
Refreshing venue.
B. N.
Still a great place to catch up with mates, but its a no from me because it doesn't feel like a proper pub, feels more like a night club especially with the new thing where you can only order through a QR code.
I get loads of people, particularly those around uni student age love clubs, but I'm more of a pub guy.
Drinks from the bar, a bit of pokes or billiards and some good steaks, thats all I'm after.
L. P.
Great meals and good looking bistro, would definitely recommend and will come back.
