Comments of Town Hall Hotel
P. B.
An old favorite North Melbourne institution of a pub, with great beers wine and staff and a terrific intimate beer garden and lots of nooks and crannies and interesting stuff on the walls. If only those walls could talk! Counter meals are superb and hearty, as pub meals should be, a great option for lunch, dinner or supper ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
N. K.
Atmosphere and food are both excellent. The menu seems simple enough but the attention to detail in the food and quality is unexpected of what looks to be a pretty classic old pup. Best of both worlds.
V. B.
We sat in the courtyard in the back. Lovely little area with lots of green. Felt fresh and naturey and we didn’t feel rushed. Service was excellent. Grab your drinks at the bar and can order at the bar or they will take your order. Cold beer and some good options. Food was better than expected. We had the Steak sand which, grilled chicken sandwich, and the roast of the day. Everyone left full and happy! What a great experience! Thanks!
D. L.
Just one of the most relaxing places in Melbourne to meet up with friends for a wonderful time. Staff and food are awesome in that order. You dont need a fortune to feel like a Queen or King . 🏫🔱
K. L.
I love everything about this pub. It's as old school as you get, basic as well as craft beer and good old fashioned favourites. All the food is always awesome.
A. L.
My husband and I had the chicken parma, which took some time to come out.. The tomato paste/sauce for parma was quite average in taste and amount. We also had jalapeño poppers, nothing much to shout about.
Our friends had the steak sanga and fish & chips, so I can't comment much on them.
Presentation of food is great though.

The Town Hall Hotel is the epitome of local neighbourhood pubs. Full bar, live music, trivia, beer garden and a mixed cuisine kitchen, it has it all. The cosy family owned and operated pub caters for almost any occasion, from after work drinks, a lazy Sunday night when you can't be bothered cooling, or even a first date (success not guaranteed).
Seating is available out the front on Errol St, supported by gas heaters for those chilly nights, inside in either the front bar or rear dining room or out the back in the shade cloth covered beer garden - which also has has booths.
The food menu is displayed on two traditional blackboards, one with the semi-permanent menu and the other with almost daily changing specials. There is the usual pub fare of steak, burgers, salads, chicken parmas and fish and chips, some old classics like the bangers and mash, shepherds pie and rotating roasts and a few surprise twists with nachos, tacos and the odd curry special.
For those that like to be mentally challenged, there are the recently introduced trivia nights at 8pm on Tuesdays.
Live music varies but is typically on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons.
They also have Sapporo on tap and a wood fireplace, no further discussion required.
If you live in the area you'd be silly, bordering mad, not to have visited the Townie.
G. K.
Was straight back here for a beer and a parma on the weekend when Melb re-opened. Just as great as pre-pandemic and the staff were lovely as always- excellent beer, food and customer service (and tunes)
R. v.
Great place, fantastic atmosphere, lots of fun and great pub food. Love it.
D. M.
The decorations and décor are a little how you doing, but it was unique and gotta say I enjoyed it. The staff are super friendly and the food is amazingly good. I got the grilled chicken burger so tasty!
S. K.
Great pub! Friendly and so much memorabilia around the walls. The meals I saw people eating looked delicious, however I did not eat there myself. I would certainly recommend this pub for a visit and remember there is a tram stop only 1min walk away.
K. G.
I love the vibe at this place. So many interesting decorations on the walls and the staff are lovely.
B. R.
Fantastic historic building and friendly staff. Housed Kissfest for the KISS army. Appropriate venue for the community. Some of the other businesses in the area were not as friendly; especially not to some of the cold biters having a rough day. A bit of kindness only creates a stronger community as live music communities were synonymous with.
Good to see that this venue has not changed much since I was last here.
d. g.
Great pub with a great beer garden to spend a sunny afternoon in. Good selection of beers on tap and well priced!
G. F.
Great place to have a drink n eat ...great atmosphere 😁👌
M. H.
You would miss this pub if you walked by.
But go inside and have a beer or a great meal.
Good service from from friendly staff.
Food delicious.
Highly recommended
J. G.
Lots of different areas inside and outside. Had the special Clive Parma which had double bacon which was very nice. A bit light on the chips and salad
K. S.
I have eaten here quite a few times and have sat both indoors and outdoors. Both environments were so warm and welcoming and the food has always been delicious. The staff are always very attentive and this will defiantly be the first place I go back to for dinner after lockdown.
I have also taken quite a few of my friends and family here from Tasmania when they come over and they have all enjoyed the meals here also.
P. Z.
Good pub
Some strange smell going around though
Couldn't tell if it was sausage or smoked salmon?!? When u get back in from the smokers it hits you for a second but it's not obnoxious
C. v. d. W.
A great old venue in the heart of Errol Street, North Melbourne. Very welcoming staff and solid pub food that will not disappoint. We had Duck Spring Rolls and Slow Roasted Beef Ribs . Both were great. Ask for extra Apple Slaw!
G. R.
Great food and atmosphere with some good beer options.
D. M.
Cool old pub with a lot of (insert perfect Yiddish word I can't think of here) character (will do). Has a smallish comfy front bar with standard beers on tap as well as a few interesting numbers. Through the front bar you walk through the side landing of a back alley into the dining area. This place was awesome, reminded me of an eastern European eating hole (yes hole in the wall type of deal). Plenty of options including delicious vegetarian fare. Through the dining area is the beer garden which has a comfortable amount of room and tables to lounge any day of the week. Hidden delight of Melbourne I reckon!
J. T.
Great atmosphere and super friendly, delightful staff! Also had an amazing serve of ribs here with a chocolate lava cake for dessert. What a place!!! Absolutely wonderful through and through
K. G.
Absolutely delicious vegan options including bangers and mash lasagna and schnitzel. Best place I can think of to take a mixed group of vegans and animal eaters.
K. L.
The ultimate inner city pub! The beer is cold, the food is great and reasonably priced, the atmosphere is is like a comfortable pair of old jeans. The staff are first rate
A proverbial " must do" for any pub lover! I would give this one 6 stars.
D. C.
What an awesome meal! Two big boys meals the Mixed Grill and the best Ribs.
M. L.
The food here is amazing, a little on the pricey side for a pub meal but definitely worth it. One of the few places in Melbourne that you can actually order a rare steak and it comes out rare! Staff can be a little unfriendly sometimes but it’s a pretty busy places so they don’t always have time for the best service. Beer garden out the back is a great place for dinner and drinks on a warm summer night.
R.
Never been here before but walked in and just said that really lovely pub. Just has that random hubby look and if I lived in North Melbourne I would come here to have a beer at the main bar and look at the random stuff
O. B.
Decent food, decent sizes and price not bad. Good beer garden!
T. C.
Came on Monday night and took advantage of the meatfree Monday deal with a $12 main. Fantastic food quality with a homely cost feel. Can't tell if all of the Jesus memorobelia on the walls is done in poor taste or a very well done gag. Could be a good pub done poorly or a poor pub done well. Hard to tell and that's what makes this place magic. Absolutely recommend it for an intimate meal with those close to you - absolutely not for a first date.
G. E.
Would have to be one of my favourite pubs in Melbourne. Good pub food, decent service with hard working staff and the quality has never dipped. Always a go to for when catching up with friends in the area. Quite a few good gigs seen there as well.
K. i. M.
Great atmosphere and good food.
E. R.
Love the townie, a true institution, and the food is absolutely ace!
A. G.
It was a very best fish burger. My girlfriend didn't like the music as much as me though, she said it was too melancholy. She read the newspaper and I read it too, though It was upside down from my perspective cos we were sitting on opposite sides of the table
M. B.
Classic old skool pub with old skool service and honest value. Always busy, fast service, friendly staff, great food, excellent value. Welcoming and unpretentious. A dying breed as so many pubs are tricked up. Always a pleasure. 👍👍
S. R.
Been there with my work mates. We enjoyed beers with dinner. They had special of the day. Chicken Parmigiana, Sizzling Mixed Grill and Spicy Calamari was the main highlights. Beer garden is quite ok.
C. W.
Awesome rock pub. Great music, excellent food. Cool posters and album covers on the wall match the original carpet.
Pub quiz every Tuesday is well worth getting a team together for.
C. E.
The front room is full of rock and roll memorabilia, the dining room is full of Jesus.
That's a juxtaposition I can get behind. Also the beer is well priced and the atmosphere is top notch.
M. P.
Homey pub. Stopped by here to grab a drink and some food before a show.
The bowl of wedges was more like a bucket (huge!) we almost didn't need dinner after it. Great value for money!
Definitely recommended for a drink and snack. Didn't take a close look at the rest of the menu for dinner, but I'm sure it'd be great.
K. S.
A very solid Parma, super cheesy which is a bit different and oodles of bacon make this thing stand out from the usual suspects
R. M.
Our favourite pub, we call it our local even though we've never lived in the area! Nothing flashy, but excellent food, lovely courtyard and trivia on Tuesdays. All the parmas including eggplant are great, as is chilli calamari and lamb on couscous. Highly recommended.
T. L.
Great little spot. Make sure you book in for trivia or you won't get a seat
J. C.
Great, friendly service, good old school pub, lovely beer garden. Bar snack type food is best though; not too crash hot on their mains which are oversized but not really good quality (eg. A chicken schnitzel shouldn't just be a giant lump of chicken breast with a very light crumb, imo)
R. J.
I am a little torn with this review. Do I lie and say it is an absolutey awful place so I can always get a table when I come here, or be honest so others can experience the near borderline MDMA overdose levels of fun I have here? I guess let's be honest. If you don't like this place that is entirely on you. You are a terrible human being and should definitely not have children and further ruin the gene pool (let's be honest, it needs some chlorine).
Come for the amazing array of religious album covers adorning the restaurant walls, and stay for the food, atmosphere and booze.
A. M.
Good honest Pub food and authentic pub experience. One of my North Melbourne favourites.
A. R.
Came in for dinner with mum and the missus. Missus had the lamb cutlets, mum had the salmon, and I had the beef ribs. What a cracker. The ribs had a great bbq sauce and were smoked, the meat fell apart and was beautiful and smokey. The apple coleslaw was wonderful, sweet and fresh. Missus gave me a lamb cutlet, beautiful flavour and tender. Mum enjoyed the salmon very much. Had an excellent meal, will be back soon I hope.
G. S.
A Melbourne music institution up there with AC/DC lane and The Tote Hotel. Regular free live gigs in the front bar, excellent and reasonably priced pub grub in the cosy back restaurant. Friendly service. The front bar is notable for it amazing collection of rock with a capital R (Iggy and the Stooges) and Australian posters, record covers and memorabilia! A virtual shrine of rock for you to peer at as you sip your beer. Recommended.
M. R.
Awesome ambience and friendly staff. Generous portions for their food and overall great experience.
L. N.
This place has a unique feel that is rare to experience these days. Greatly setup beer garden out back, great themes on the walls inside, old school pub feel inside. Great stop on Errol St!
m. D.
Great authentic rock and roll pub.Always friendly, professional staff, great food and even better service.
L. F.
There's a great, cozy beer garden.
Makes an easy, relaxed atmosphere through the day.
Excellent food. Generous portions.
Will be back soon I hope.
m. c.
Didn't go in just peered through door at chinese next door but looked very welcoming and cosy
N. J.
The small restaurant at the back of the venue is cosy and toasty. My Lemon, Lime & Bitters tasted unpleasant. The chicken of my parma was also undercooked which made it unenjoyable. Bit disappointed sadly.
N. S.
Awesome bar and staff !
Great beer garden and nice food !
M. E.
Great vegetarian food, low key pub with beer garden. Good local pub.
B. B.
Love this dingy old place, food is great, relaxed vibe, odd decor and friendly staff, firm favourite
E. M.
Looks and feels like ten different pubs rolled into one. Sweet beer garden out the back, perfect for a slow drink or a communal Saturday night.
S. M.
Generous portions of pretty high quality food, not cheap but certainly reasonable prices. Don't be fooled by the cheap looking front hall, the dining room is much nicer and there's a great, cosy beer garden at the back with booths and fairy lights.
G. P.
Good dive bar if you're into that kind of vibe. REALLY good selection of top shelf and unique alcohols at very reasonable price and nice and close to a few live performance venues like comics lounge and the Lithuanian club
P. S.
Old LP Covers festoon the front bar as fascinating forms of decoration from the past. Good Bistro Food Selection and Friendly Service
M. D.
It's a pub that feels like a much quieter bar. Good food, good drinks, very nice vibe, and the beer garden is a nice retreat from things.
F. L.
Won’t ever go to another trivia night if lasers and a smoke machine aren’t there after one evening at the towny
H. G.
We absolutely love this place. We recently took some out of town friends there and they commented that you could be sitting in any pub in England. An honest gem.
L.
Loved the venue, an old school pub with really friendly service, from all staff :) food was pretty standard, but the cosy environment and attention was tops :)
J. X.
A friendly pub with a casual atmosphere.
Delicious and modestly priced eats.
A non pretentious atmosphere with a garage band sound track.
N. H.
Great venue, classic pub food and a few well executed specials always on the boards. Good beer on tap selection.
M. -.
They don't always stay open to 1 despite what their listed trading hours say. If you are looking to get a little more out of the night don't bother making a big trip to get here, they might just close early.
R. S.
Authentic British pub atmosphere. Cosy, extensive menu with good quality food, plenty of drink options and good service. Can get very busy at popular times!
L. K.
Visiting from NZ with my sister and husband, best meal we have had a a long long time. Mixed grill was amazing. Thank you would recommend this to you all

H. S.
Nostalgia Nostalgia and nostalgia with the place, for its looks, smell and feel. The food is good a bit pricy as compared to other pub food but, good place good environment.
H. K.
Great local hotel, food was amazing (Moroccan Salad.) Nice beer garden great atmosphere. Very quirky and cool. Highly recommended 😀
A. S.
Traditional community pub all t rare in this day and age. No pokies, thank god. On the day I attended the bistro was booked out. Johnny Cash playing on the background. It is warm and cosy in the bistro.
A. F.

A. F.
I've known John for over 20 years the place is very hospitable with wide range of beverages and tastey food great when a bands on
R. C.
Good place to have a casual drink or dinner. Hopefully the council will let amplified music be played in the beer garden sometime soon!
N. B.
A slightly odd worn down aesthetic, focusing around Jesus memorabilia in the bistro. Have never not had a great meal and have been at least 30 times.
D. S.
A great, unpretentious pub. Love coming here for the real pub feel, without the ridiculous price tag of some other venues in the area.
J. G.
Always great service and atmosphere, there almost every fortnight or so, reasonable prices but lovely food. Well done guys!
b. g.
Not a drop of pretentiousness has gone into the make up of the town hall hotel. Good food, good music, bands and punk rock memorabilia (iggy pop! not green day sorry kids).
C. M.

a first class building made by a wanddering Irishman. He was paid in beer, hence the beautiful result. Well done that Man.
C. L.
Oh Lordy- I should be banned from this place after the barrels I drained in one night. Still I’m sure they’ll let me back in even though the carpet might be a little damp

5 stars. A total fave.

A magic dive bar with a genuine warm vibe. Whilst the old rock posters and album covers might not be the favourite decor for most, the Town Hall brings a feeling of a safe place to enjoy a boiler maker after a long day. The food is delicious and there is often sports to watch on the screen. My favourite watering hole north of the city

Makes living in North Melbourne a treat. Great outside areas, great beers on tap, a slew of spirits for those who love a little burn in their beverage! Haven't tried the food yet, but I freaking will!
