Comments of Westside Ale Works

One of the very few places that were open during lockdown for takeaway beer.
We came after the lockdown was lifted to try more of their beer & the food.
We got a paddle each and sampled their many varieties of beer. You get to choose 4 of the 30 options. Staff help with the selection if you are as confused as I am.
I wouldn't say that this is the best beer I had, as they only serve craft brews from the USA (American Pale Ales, West Coast IPAs, American Sours, and Stouts). They do have excellent pizzas.
So if you are up to experiencing a different kind of non-Australian beer, this is your place.
A. M.
Great small brewery bar. Tables available inside and out (in good weather). Very large selection of beers from in house and other breweries. Wheelchair friendly venue as it is all on the same level with disability toilets. Big screen projector TV. Some bar games and a takeaway fridge for travelers.
C. S.
Nice little brew bar, close to the city friendly and knowledgeable staff, good beer selection
A. M.
Booked this little brewery for a casual gathering for my 50th just before New Years. It was absolutely the best place. So many beers available, friendly knowledgeable staff and house distilled gin and tonic on tap! What’s not to love? And the home made pizzas…. they were the best. Thanks for helping make my day so much fun.
S. M.
I’m hesitant to share this review because I don’t want this place to become too popular but this place is the best!’ The staff (Bridgette and colleagues) are super nice and very professional and always create good vibes.
This is really a hidden gem and I highly recommend coming here if you’re in the area. Hell, make the trip - it’s definitely worth it!!
K.
Great beer selection, staff were very friendly and the food was also very welcome!
You can bring dogs (outside) too which is great, and there were a few games to play for entertainment. Plenty of seating, although it can get quite busy with large groups at times.
Would recommend for beers and food!
L. S.
Great little brewery. Tasty pizzas and an almost overwhelming list of on tap beers.
Plenty of board games and a shuffle board table. Tucked away in a side street so easy to miss but worth a trip.
L. K.
This is going to be my new home! I can’t believe I haven’t been here before. The beers are amazing and they have a great guest tap list. I have been to a lot of craft beer bars in the USA and this has replicated that 100%. There is a big screen for the footy, plenty of games including a dart board! I will be a regular here now
M. F.
Huge selection of beers. Managed only 2 beer type before I kinda felt "I love you" mode.
Hidden in an alley way. Check it out.
West Coast American influences.
L. N.
Really chill craft brewery on the edge of the CBD. 30 beers on tap, including an incredible 20 of their own beers. The staff are super friendly and the pizzas are delicious.
T. B.
Always great with a large selection of beers made locally and from all over. 20 taps.
Pizzas are just okay but definitely worth comming for the beers and friendly service alone.
M. T.
I am drinking a Slam Dunkelweizen, possibly the best Australian attempt at a German beer, ever! It's so good I'm on no. 2. This micro brewery is only a 20 minute walk from Melbourne Docklands. It has 20 home brews on tap, plus another 10 guest beers. Food wise, there is pizza and pop corn. There are board games and a dart board for entertainment. So if you like a beer with flavour, it is definitely worth a visit.
L. T.
Absolutely amazing beers and such a friendly staff filled with US ex-pats. This is definitely one of my favorite brewerys in all of Melbourne
J. 1.
We're really glad we fit in an hour here during our trip to Melbourne. This is one of the very rare breweries where I liked every beer I tasted. The German Pale (Das Lederhosen Drapper) was my favourite and was thankful that I was able to take a litre away which I very much look forward to drinking.
If you love craft beer, definitely come here.
Spud the dog is a little champ and will be your friend for life for but a few pieces of popcorn which is provided.
D. M.
My partner fancies himself as a bit of a beer connoisseur so we went to this place last weekend to check out what it was all about after hearing it due to open. I'm a bit of a sceptic in general, but it was great - particularly telling was watching Corey inquire about the flavours and learn an extra thing or 10 about brewing. I don't often review places, but this was really great. The staff were fun and generous, the crowd was unpretentious, and I plan to be back for an afternoon session with my dog when I get back from overseas in a fortnight. Also I signed up for a monthly delivery. We don't have a car, so the fact that bottle and deliver is cool. Bring on some warm summer nights so I can crack open a refreshing ale while I watch the cricket. Looking forward to going back (esp if they do parties?!?).
M. R.
Lovely beer tasting experience. Great beers to taste, very friendly staff - and a cute dog too. Have visited them on their last day in the old premises so can't comment on what it looks like now but am looking forward to visiting them again. Recommended.

Quietly tucked away in the corner of South Melbourne, this hidden gem punches above it’s weight in terms quality and wide variety of crafts beer on tap, brewed in-house including many guest beers on rotation.
The head brewer is from California and draws on his origin to create his own unique take on craftsbeer.
Located in an industrial warehouse, the setting is quite casual, albeit relaxing and great place to kick back with your mates without having to struggle to talk to someone, which could be problematic at other breweries where it could get too loud and rowdy.
Food offering is limited to pizzas and nachos, however is reasonably priced and enough to feed the munchies. (Highly recommend the nachos for sharing, probably one of the best nachos I had at a brewery/pub, properly done with the right amount of toppings, this is coming from someone who have had nacho served with cheap melted cheese over chips many times)
If you’re coming during winter, bring a jacket since it could get a bit cold or even better just drink more beer, I find that always work :)
M. M.
Amazing what they got crammed into this tight space. Great venue. Huge range of beers, which are a bit hit and miss to be honest.
J. W.
Always an awesome selection of fresh beer, 30 taps on the go (20 brewed there, 10 kegs from other breweries).
Can get growlers and cans filled from the tap.

Beer, popcorn, a Frenchie and some Halloween sweets. Nice and laidback vibe with a top selection of crafties. One thing I have noticed is the growing trend in Melbourne for sours. It’s a shame I have to go home tomorrow and turned up just at closing time.
K. L.
Great selection of beers to suit almost anyone. Good pizzas too
D. H.
First time visitor. Excellent and huge selection of 20 local beers across the full range (ales, IPA, NEIPA, Sours etc), plus 10 other beers. The warehouse vibe and friendly staff make this place work. Oh and they do pizza as well. I will be back
D. L.
Awesome hospitality, 30 taps, a blend of excellence and experimental ales and a barrel program to watch.....a must see!
T. R.
Westside has the perfect balance between the warm tones of a great beer and the crispness of locally sourced world class hops.
Not only is the beer first rate, but the staff is charming. Ask for the owners, Casey and Leah, and take a tour!
C. R.
Fantastic range of quality craft beer within an authentic brewery. So nice to appreciate the beer and quality food right next to the brewing vats.
A. F.
Fantastic service from everyone at Westside Ale Works. We booked a table outside and they even brought out a bowl of water for the dogs. There is plenty of different beers to try and the pizzas are delicious. Great place to bring tourists too 👍
L. S.
Lovely hospitality and a fantastic of reasonably priced beer and food!
H. S.
Super friendly, excellent beers, tasty pizza. Love this place and the vibes. 30 beers on tap! Also doggo friendly.
A. W.
Amazing service. Had the best beer you will ever have. Not exaggerating. The pizza is phenomenal, leaving bursts of flavour in your mouth. You need to go here. You won't be disappointed!

Some nice beers to be had here

I like coming down to Westside for a beverage or two. I like that it's very casual, has a good variety of beers to choose from and really friendly staff. Great local spot - happy to recommend.
S. E.
An excellent brewery with plenty of variety and great food, nice to see a brewery happy to experiment with so many different styles without compromising on quality. Highly recommended.
T. R.
Westside has the perfect balance between the warm tones of a great beer and the crispness of locally sourced world class hops. …
J. B.
Fantastic little gem hidden away in a industrial side street of South Melbourne. Great beer friendly staff and they have a dog called spud who works they room for pats and food.
They right kind of trendy. They are great at what they do and they really care about it. You can see and feel this straight away when you talk to the owners who are always there.
Great people, great place, fantastic beer.

This new local brewery is a great place to taste a range of craft beers that blend American influence and Australian ingredients. The owners are super friendly and it's a very relaxed atmosphere, perfect for kicking back and enjoying a brew or few. Some great options on the menu too for those who don't drink beer or are feeling a bit peckish. We recommend the cheese platter and tasting paddle!
S. S.
Fairly simple recipe of a brewing warehouse, basic seating and of course a giant tap list consisting mostly of their own creations covering various styles. Shame it's only pints, as almost everything is 2+ std drinks. The pizza was reasonable if perhaps a little over priced. For beer lovers of Melbourne it's a must visit.
T. B.
Awesome micro brewery, great selection of beers. Besides their own line up, which is quite extensive, they have a "research and development" section, aka a fridge with heaps of international beers. The staff and Spud are always very welcoming. Oh, and there is free popcorn!
G. W.
Great beer, super friendly owners, cool industrial space. Can't wait to come back!
Update: We can't stop going back to Westside! The Ava's Amber is one of the best amber ales I've ever tried, the BBQ on Saturdays is delicious, and we keep sharing our table with great people.
Such a cool vibe, great beer, and some dub to get your head bobbing on a casual weekend afternoon!
S. W.
Great spot, heaps of beers on tap and knowledgeable staff! Thanks for a great arvo :)
R. L.
I love the beers there, especially American Red Ale! The tasting paddle (6 beers for $12) does not disappoint! The owners, Leah and Casey, are great and welcoming. Great way to spend the day =) Would definitely come back!
K. L.
The beer is pretty great..lots of options for all to enjoy. Staff are awesome & chill. Complimentary spicy bbq wings are a stupendous bonus. Recommend beer lovers try it out for a chilled out place to try some interesting and varied brews. Plus they've got great tunes and you may have the chance to pet a cute doggo!
J. S.
The staff where very accommodating, knowable & helpful. They know their beers. An amazing array of house & guest brews, 30 in total! Pizza was good too!
M. C.
Really great family business. Great service, great beers, you can geek out and have a good time talking to the brewer, but they're also cool with people just there to relax with a coldie who are not hardcore craft beer people.
Definitely worth a visit!
N. G.
A great experience talking to the guys who own it. I started off with a tasting paddle of beer then progressed onwards. Very tasty beer and food. A rough interior but that fits very well considering your drinking in a micro brewery. Definitely coming back.
C. S.
Came from the craft beer capital of the US to visit family in Melbourne for the holidays and we're so glad we stumbled across this place. The beer is yummy and the service is wonderful. Great way to spend Christmas Eve!
E. D.
Fun little Brewery in an industrial part of south Melbourne / Port Melbourne. Heavily American inspired (I believe the 'westside' refers to the west side of the USA) and they have some great IPAs, Pale Ales, Red Ales and other fantastic beers on the go. Large picnic tables inside a warehouse type space, they serve pizza and sometimes have food trucks out the front.
J. K.
Casual spot with some tasty beers. Friendly service. My fave was the hybrid sparkling ale which was great on a hot day for a non beer drinker. My boyfriend loved the American Red. Close to the city and tram. Will be coming back!
S. H.
Best beer that I had in Oz, hands down. Delicious selections of pales, NEIPAs, sours made on site + some beers from “mates” like Stone and Buxton. Maximum respect.
S. W.
Wow, just fantastic. This place takes craft brewing to where it should be. Casey cares about his beers and this place is small enough to enjoy an afternoon trying new brews while talking to the guy who makes it.
Give it a go. You wont be disappointed.
S. Z.
Beautiful beer, Casey and Leah are very friendly and generous owners who make dropping in for a beer a bit like a holiday. Great place to bring people from out of town who want to see the real 'craft beer' revolution in person.
K. L.
Great selection of drinks, great food, awesome staff, definitely worth checking out!!
S. B.
Wonderful place in an unexpected location. Craft beers. Friendly staff. Casual atmosphere.
T. Z.
Great people, fantastic taps, family owned, quality ingredients, in house brewing and bottling.
G. B.
The owner/brewer, Casey, makes some seriously delicious (hoplicious) beer! Location is convenient to downtown and a cool spot to hang out. Can't wait to go again!
A. H.
I don't really want to do a review because I feel that the more people that find out about this place the less that it will be awesome! Great team, super friendly and nice garage space to chill in. Beer is also very very good.
S. O. M. T. W.
Such an awesome craft beer! Our boys love Westside Ale Works. So pleased we can now get it our hands on this delicious goodness. Bring on summer!!
T. S.
Westside Ale Works is a hidden gem. Great beer - loved everything in my paddle and could not imagine a more friendly, relaxed environment. We will definitely be back!!
L. W.
I am giving this a 5 because the beer is just so great and I think its an amazing place that should be supported. I do wish there was a bit more atmosphere here though as, unless you are a serious craft beer fan, there isn't much to draw you here.
Q. Y. K.
Super friendly and relaxed craft brewery. Had a brilliant afternoon with friends and kids. The owners are fabulous - wonderfully kind and adventurous folk!

(Translated) There are an increasing number of breweries that make and sell delicious beer in Korea, mainly in Itaewon and Gyeongnidan-gil, but Westside Ale Works is a good place to visit if you are a Melbourne traveler who loves beer. My personal recommendation is Tasting paddle $13 (AUD). Popcorn is provided as standard.
