Comments of Friend in Hand Hotel
G. C.
Retro pub really good for meeting friends. Has lots of character. Has some really hearty and great tasting and well priced meals. All meals basically range from $15 to $20 and are large, fresh and made to order. Burgers, schnitzels, lasagna, meatballs, amazing shoe string fries, etc. Weeknight specials as well. Georgie the cockatoo who lives in the pub is a real hoot. Well worth visiting this Glebe gem.
M. H.
Great spot for a relaxing afternoon beer in an older style pub. The vIP room is just ok and has an outdoor section if your still smoking. Nice pub
S. B.
What a wonderful iconic pub. It's changed owners tonight but the old owners are back with a new generation. Great stories come from this pub. Great music too. An original. A pub for the people.
A. D.
Love this Glebe Gem. It is an ecclectic mix of stuff, including a Live Cockatoo.
New restaurant called Fork In Hand. Great food good value
Sunday evening raffle is an experience with all proceeds going to local Glebe Public School. Live band and plenty of characters.
A must visit.
Sunday roast is back at just $15
Kid friendly.
A. B. S.
10/10 customer service. Brought our disability clients and the staff were amazing! Food quality is amazing and prices are incredible! Would highly recommend 😊
E. R.
Food was good. Service was good. Deco was interesting haha, you don't see many pubs with a giant hermit crab enclosure. Wasn't really my cup of tea, I came for poetry but it was too crowded to see. All in all it was okay.
T. G.
1st visit to my local since freedom day, staff were so accommodating, its was a birthday dinner of 8, and they met every need we asked, nothing was a drama, best pub experience in a long time in my own backyard, can't ask for more than that ✌✌✌
M. H.
Absolutely excellent old school Sydney pub
Delicious well presented good quality food at the right price
Heaps of special offers thru the week for families
Great atmosphere and exceptional staff
And management
Could not fault this pub in any way
W. M.
This place has a very nice atmosphere. The staff are good and always helpful. Even the customers all have a care free attitude all the while enjoying themselves. All age types go there, but with the majority are a younger crowd, like UNI students & backpackers.
The whole place is decked out with an assortment of pictures, historic photos and and other things such as dressed up manequins, nick nacks and even a train that goes around above the bar.
There is a smoking area, bistro, ATM, betting services and poker machines.
There are different types of enteraiment on most nights, such as live music. But on each last Wednesday of each month they have Hermit Crab races.
The building itself is an historic style establishment on a corner, with the pub having 2 floors and 3 bar areas. Upstairs they also have 2 x Pool Tables, 1 × Table Tennis Table & 1 x Pinball Machine. (Will find the internal closed off room for smoking).
Would recommend this place for anyone wanting to go somewhere for a new experience unlike some of other generic pubs around Sydney. Loved the place.
M. T.
My favourite pub in Sydney!! So much character, great staff and a friendly cockatoo! Crab racing is a must, but be prepared to get wet.
C. V.
Love going to this place. You don't find many if any pubs like The Friend in Hand. The owner is awesome and one in a million. Staff are great and friendly.
W.
Great simple pub food. Portions that will fill your belly. Flavour that will fill your heart.
K. D.
LOVE LOVE LOVE
this pub is ran by the nicest cockatoo you'll ever meet.
She comes with the place & I actually enjoyed a great conversation with her a few days ago.
This is a must to visit & I'm not a drinker but just go have a great meal & enjoy the BEST convo ever she really is a Great girl.
A. F.
Been here twice, wouldn't mind coming back to try the live draw session. Nice staff and a well mannered cockatoo that only have an eye for the dudes. (George is a female sulfur arrested cockie. )
A. M.
Great local pub with food! I really enjoy the fish and I know the burgers are amazing too... 241 on tuesdays
j. c.
First visit since change of management. Just as excellent as always. Been coming over past 15 years. Service 110% beer prices 100% atmosphere and ambience 110%. One of Sydney's best secrets. Highly recommend.
M. C. G.
Pretty reasonable ... Although, asked for medium, reviewed rare. Went to ask the chef to cook it longer, bit no-one was in the kitchen ... Left it. Waste of good money and a good steak
w. o.
Always a friendly place to lunch with good value, large, yummy meals.
J. G.
Came for the cockatoo, stayed for the food.
We got the squid, mushroom burger, and fish & chips. All were delicious. George the cockatoo is super cute and I want to squeeze him. So much to look at on the walls, overall great experience.
R. M.
I have been to this interesting little hotel twice in the past few months. From the outside, it looks a little dodgy. Not bad, but not fancy or glitzy. But after looking at some of the reviews, we tried it out and are very happy we did. Atmosphere was cozy and friendly with a mix of students and professionals coming home after a hard day cooking on their computer screens. No loud music, no loud drunks. Very good range of tap beers, IPA, dark, lagers, the usual collection. Food menu is broad and the burgers and schnitzel was excellent. Some places food is either a little old sitting in the kitchen trays but here, it comes out super fresh and very much met my happy expectations. Schnitzel crust had great herb plavour as did the chips. The previous visit I had the beef burger. It was not one of those “busy” burgers with six sauces and a dozen ingredients. It was tidy, tasty and easy to pick up and eat without the need for a carving knife and spoon to get through it. So happy to recommend this place especially around 5.30 to 8pm week nights.
M.
Cool place. Proper old school pub with character.
S. F.
I love this place. Quirky decor and warm atmosphere. Friendly, attentive and professional staff. Great weekday lunch / dinner specials and happy hour deals. Also Georgie the Cockatoo is the best.
W. C.
Mitch is great! Friendly staff and good atmosphere. Would rate 6 stars if I could because of Georgie, the beautiful cockatoo.
T. K.
First time back at the Friend In Hand since the change of ownership & renovations. Still a great pub, the kitchen is excellent and serves up huge portions of classic pub fare. Definitely will become a regular spot for us.
F. F. S.
This pub doesn't miss a trick when it comes to the safety of thier patrons and the rest of the community. Thier COVID-19 plans that they have in place is probably the most organized out of most of the pubs that I've been in and you can still relax and enjoy your experience without any worries.... Well done Friend in Hand Hotel 😎
D. R.
Legit a hidden gem - love a pub that tells a story and doesn't feel like the plastic wrap was taken off yesterday. Bung the pokies, bring back the live music and the eel I reckon 🥒
J. J.
Genuine home style farm quality meals with generous servings. Say hi to Georgie the cockatoo while you eat. Highly recommend
S. G.
If you're in Sydney and you're interested in reading out the poetry you've written down then this is the place for you. The Sydney Poetry Lounge is the official title, but I'd just call it a good time. Come one, come all - there's such a vast variety of styles for the open mic, with each poet reciting their own unique verse. There's even guest poets - to give us mere mortals something to aspire to. Truly inspirational. Caught a glimpse of the pet cockatoo on the tenders back - pretty cool image. Sampled the beer and that rated well - a Young Henry's I believe. Haven't tried the food yet but I've heard it's good.
J. P.
I love it it's an awesome pub and I love Georgie the cockatoo
M. M.
Great Sydney CBD pub with awesome party atmosphere backed up with friendly staff
S. D.
Service with a smile goes a long way...In a great pub that prides itself on a welcoming environment Keirens lack of warmth towards his team & customers certainly does not promote that value..
d. t.
The food here was terrific, however the wine selection was appalling, only one bottle of Shiraz offered for sale and of below average quality at that. Expand the range of Shiraz at least.
L.
Always have mixed feelings about this place. Overall a solid good. Food selection is decent. Servings could always be larger. Staff are very friendly and they host a number of singer/songwriter and nerd/science night's upstairs which is what usually brings us there. Nice relaxed feel - certainly popular more amongst the locals than outside visitors which is nice :)
M. g.
Great Pub! Most definitely one of my favourites in Sydney.
10/10
F. C.
Friendly warning - this is still my favourite pub ever - but they have bricked up the smoking area on the bottom floor. Truly devastating. I am sure that many of us have had many great nights out there :( it is now gone. Still come to Sydney's best pub, but be warned that that magical area is now gone.
A. A.
Worth a visit! The food is your standard pub feed - the steaks were cooked perfectly and were great for $15.
There are plenty of different beers on tap and a variety of wines to pick from.
There is also a cute/quirky train track set up above you o the bistro side of the pub with a train driving around.
Great little local pub!
K.
A super interesting pub to visit. They have vintage Australian signs and memorabilia everywhere. If you're hungry this will hit the spot. Serving sizes are big, even for the kids menu.
A. A. J.
I've been there only twice for the life drawing event hosted there every Monday. The place looks cozy and the staff are very nice. The beer was nice and very reasonably priced, although I don't have a good point of reference for Aussie beer prices. At the exchange rate, it was way cheaper than many similar places back in Hong Kong.
P. S.
Seems alright. Beer was good. Locals friendly.
Z. F.
Big plates, warm food with nice interiors nothing too fancy but homy and clean
Perfect for Sunday afternoon late lunch
D. L.
Love this pub. Cheap and cheerful local hidden in the back streets of Glebe. Recently renovated dining area which I am yet to try. Happy Hour from 5-6pm plus they serve pints. The cockatoo is the local that props up the bar! Fun pub full of interesting knick nacks and decor.
J. M.
Always wanted to go to this pub and it didn’t disappoint. What a fantastic, friendly place. The Barman was great and offered good tips for ordering food and it was the best surf & turf steak I’ve had in many years. Tops 🍻
A. B.
Simple menu with simple but tasty pub food. Great options for burgers and a range from the grill. Keep an eye out for the resident cockatoo - really adds to the vibe
C. H.
Very nice Pub very friendly people and I had a good time will go back again
S. M.
Best Pub in Sydney.
L. E.
What a cool Bar! Super friendly good looking bar staff, more than happy to help out in any way possible. George the sulphur crested cockatoo might make an appearance on your table, looking for attention. The decor in the bar is amazing, the more you look the more you see, from model railway trains running on tracks to complete suits of armour hanging on the walls. Crab racing on a Wednesday night is also a great night out, full of backpackers and students enjoying the fun. My favourite bar in Sydney!!!
K. S.
It has a live cockatoo at the bar.
Refresh of the chairs and tables downstairs gives you lots of nice seating options.
Awesome pool room upstairs.
Be warned, The darts board has been removed sadly to make way for a tv screen.
Excellent list of traditional beers, no craft nonsense to be found here.
This is an excellent old fashioned pub for the local ultimo crew, and I hope they don't change it much more.
(For food, go grab Thai from long kin in pyrmont)
A. S.
Great location for a local pub. Easy access and friendly for anyone come in by. They have most of the drinks on the shelves or beer on tap. Not a great selection of Prosecco drinks and not sure of all the bar list.
It has 2 leves with a smoking area at the end of the floor, which is a bit crowded and not suitable for people who don't like smoking but open plan which helps.
2 pool tables and 1 table tennis which is awesome. Pokie machines available too which im not a big fan of but if anyone has fun with gambling its the perfects spot.
T. K.
Update #;; The guys have got it right, good portions, deals and good prep!
Update;; the chef (in turn, menu) changed, and from our last visit, seems the food is now just your typical pub grub - not done as great anymore either. No longer have the Halloumi fries - which actually made it stand out for me and my missus. Used to be our regular dinner/drink spot, but we haven't been back since. ;;
Great staff, friendly vibes, patrons usually super friendly too. Love all the random knicknacks and things scattered around for decoration!
Food is also very decent, chef is really great when he's not overloaded with orders - definitely always above the standard pub feed, protip; the Halloumi fries are absolutely amazing! /Recommend
S. J.
Loved this pub. Great pub food and was pretty cheap even after we got beers and a bottle of wine. The entertainment though is next level - crab racing, getting hosed, abs competitions, people of bars and generally lots of fun even on a weeknight. Great fun night out
J. H.
Wow. This place is like a museum. With lots of Memorabilia on walls, ceiling everywhere. A real Cockatoo sits and eats in the corner. Friendly locals. Pub is in the middle of a residential street in Glebe. Comedy night upstairs Thursdays. Live music, raffles, Pokies, TAB machine, Restaurant downstairs. World famous pub they say :)
N. B.
Eclectic spot for a beer and watch comedy on Thursday's nights! I heard they were also doing crab races which I haven't tried (yet!).
The place looks like... a normal pub really, nothing standing out besides a parrot during the day. Food is OK.
P. D.
Eclectic pub with endless array of interesting knick knacks and memorabilia. Friendly community pub with great meals and prices. Lots of interesting character and a pet cockatoo that will say hello to you on the way in the door.
J. T.
I love this place, quirky and interesting. The resident cockatoo is hilarious. Nice pictures and memorabilia of Sydney in days gone by. Nice to sit out the front and watch the afternoon pass by. Even better on a balmy afternoon when a thunderstorm is brewing.
T. L.
I have been visiting Friend for nearly 20 years. Love the colloquial atmosphere here. Friendly, old-school working class pub. Perhaps the smokers area should be segregated to around the corner and not directly out front. Non-smokers suffer!
J. L.
I've been here a few times for the regularly held (now) nerd nites held in the top room - the food from the bistro is always very hearty and the murals on the wall are always intriguing and interesting. The decorations around downstairs (I saw the marine theme with the old style scuba suit) add character to what is already a great pub.
E. T.
An iconic Sydney hotel with welcoming friendly and happy staff and a bigger than life personality George the cockatoo. The hotel itself has an extremely large collection of historic and quirky memorabilia that hours can be spent viewing while having one of Sydney's best tap beers. Although casual the place is cultured with poetry nights and a huge Achibald prize painting of Dough Mulray the iconic Sydney radio jock. This inviting historic local hotel also offers a great bistro lovely beer garden and great tab and gaming area as well as live music and raffles on Sundays. There is a fabulous area available for private functions as well as pool tables upstairs. The friend in hand is known around the world as a must do for travellers and back packers as it was the first hotel in Sydney to offer crab racing with a party atmosphere and a hell of a good night that needs to be experienced at least once ...a place that I would highly recommend...
L. G.
A great bar for any occasion! As soon as you step inside it feels like you have travelled back in time; the in modernised decor giving it a great ambiance. Wednesday night is crab racing which is so much fun; surrounded by back packers having a laugh and joining in on the fun!
R. V.
Nice little local , the in-house cockatoo is as loud as a tyrannosaurus. The staff are super friendly and warm and I loved the beers and arancini
S. E.
One of the best hotels in Glebe, I liked the bistro, tried the grain fed rump steak it was made to perfection, I look forward for more visits.
J. J.
Amazing pub with lots of Aussie/kiwi/entire world memorabilia. Good food, beers are cold, and the staff are friendly. They even have an old ROV on display! .... Love it
K. S.
A fine pub. Bit of a museum thing going on - quirky as. Don’t forget to say hello to George the cockatoo, put an steady arm out and he’ll jump on!
Table tennis and pool tables upstairs!
Food ok.
Always ask them to turn the train on for the kids!
B. O.
Kitsch to the max. Downstairs smells of stale spilled beer. Great 1980s music though. Very good room upstairs for private functions. Very reasonable drinks prices.
T. V.
Good local pub, real locals, staff generally pretty good, foods ok, upstairs can be good if you want some time out.
T. N.
“More a museum than a pub” is how Friend in Hand, a charming Art-Deco hotel, describes itself. And it’s true; memorabilia fill the place, photographs, surf skis, model planes even a bunting made up of currency notes from around the world.
Recently the folks at Darley Street Bistro, a family run business, has taken over the kitchen. And it’s a delicious partnership. This bistro menu is filled with burger choices including pulled pork, KFC chicken and American double beef burger. Bangers and mash, lamb pie are there for the traditionalists.
Prices are reasonable, my rump steak with a choice of mash, fries, salad or veg with an option of usual sauces was $17. I pick mash, veg and pepper sauce, medium rare. The meat is standard quality, great sauce, more a mild pepper gravy. The veggies are just cooked and still crispy and springy.
A. D. (.
One of the hidden treasure within Glebe and a great student and hostel nightout on a Wednesday for crab racing! The venues has the old pub feel to it, not my kind of thing but it makes up for it with $10 Jugs of beer and the staff. Wednesday Night is the Night to go down though as Crab racing is one of the messes and and craziest nights that I have seen in Glebe and probably in Sydney you need to go at least go once... umbrellas are optional.
P. B.
Just moved to Glebe and discovered The Friend in Hand ... What a find! There's a cockatoo called George Byrnes, a bar like something out of a time machine. Great to see that they haven't 'modernised' it like so many other Sydney pubs that have no atmosphere. Great restaurant for authentic wholesome pub food that doesn't cost the earth and Crab Racing. Check it out.
C. C.
They used to do live comedy here.
.edit: sat may 15 - get Sam Boring, Jake Stone and Nick King, if you can ;) ...Bowring. damn autocorrect }:o
D. S.
I've been going here for over
30yrs never seizes to amaze me.As the name implies it is a
friendly place. So much character, impossible to see all
memrobilia in one visit.Old world charm.Food and beer fab.
Don't forget crab races last
Wednesday of the month.
M. M.
Cute little spot in the back streets of Glebe. Decent wine list, beers on tap & coders plus a bistro. Outdoor seating & lounge seating is available plus the usual TAB. Great for a mid week drink with locals
s. m.
Security and staff are the best people iv meet in a pub before first time there and I'll be coming back all the time the place is like no other even the people there are nice. Food is 6 out of 10 could get better but other than that loved the place
C. Q.
Friendly staff, great attractions (crab race on wed is the best), awesome food and an amazing place to be around friends and get to know new ppl.
Also, one thing that came to my attention is the fact that u don't see too many international students there.
J. B.
Fantastic friendly little pub with a bistro and room hire available upstairs. If you order chips with your beer, make sure you're prepared to share with George, the sulphur-crested cockatoo, who is chief security guard and public relations officer.
S. Y.
Unique pub, great for a day out. Good, cheap food. Quick customer service and many regulars. Just down the street from Glebe markets!
A. J.
Interesting place good food and drinks
N. M.
Nice pub. Good vibes. Great staff. Great food and in the back of glebe. Definitely worth checking out
P. K.
Enjoyed this pub for almost 6 months every 2 weeks to meet friends and plan a trip in central Australia. Definitely a place to visit to have a friendly meal.
N. H.
Friendly ecclecticly cluttered pub with with live cockatoo to greet you near the door. Lots of mid week stuff to do like comedy on a Thursday, crab racing on a Wednesday poetry and art.
h. q.
Really cool pub with lots of buzzy things on the wall, shout out to the upside down boat in the courtyard. If I had to pick something I didn't like it was the limited choices for vegetarians on the menu.
M. S.
Nice chilled local pub. Not many of these have survived in Sydney. A little gem from the olden days. Definitely worth a visit! :-)
l.
One of my favourite local comedy hubs on Thursday nights. The venue is low key and quirky decor. Friendly staff and cockatoo.
K. C.
Very friendly locals pub, cold beer poured expertly into cold glasses, good punting pub,
authentic pub atmosphere & great food. Favourite pub to have a drink.
A. B.
Did a live art class here in the upstairs section which was alot of fun but the pub is very cool and full on with props etc but nice vibes.
J. W.
Interesting, sensible pub. Cold beer. Polite staff and pub food.
J. T.
Since the renovation it's one of the coziest pubs I've been to, on top of that the guy that's in charge Mitch is an absolute legend, customer service to remember!
N. P.
Crab race on Wednesdays is entertaining and hilarious. The hosts are cool the pub's vibe very irish. Food is cheap, recommended.
J. D.
Fantastic pub. Lots of great options on tap and the burgers are great. Even better to enjoy if you're a local.
J. T.
I remember last year was here great Chines couple. Food was awesome every day different meal.
Today ucan haveburgers orsalad i took burger came with chips. I like this burger what i dont like was chips. If u will do home made one will be absolutly best.anybody can do frozen one.
C. L.
Local Aussie pub. Great comedy night on Thursdays 8pm. Kitchen is very good these days and beer selection is good as well.
E. C.
The Friend in Hand Hotel is my favourite local. It's a quirky place with lovely bar staff, when you visit, you always feel at home.
J. B.
True blue glebe classic. Vitimin B on tap, great seats out front to have a dart and people watch, and a good mix of local legends. What more could you want of a quiet beer?
Y. M.
Highly recommend going on. Wednesday night where the crab racing is held. Ridiculously fun and hilarious to watch. The host of the evening is brilliant too!
A. J.
VERY TRADITIONAL PUB,SO NICE, CUSTOMERS HAPPY ABOUT FOOD AND FRIENDLY SERVICES IN GENERAL.
E. B.
Curious little bar, obviously has a following if local regulars. Food was burned but we arrived late into service. Trivia, crab racing and friendly George the cocky
J. K. (.
Jake at the Friend is much more than a burger joint in Jake Chalmers and much more than a pub in The Friend In Hand Hotel Glebe. It is a nostalgic trip to a retro pub museum ran by a cockatoo serving some of the better burgers in NSW with a side of beer. What more do you want?
A. G.
Haven't been for years, still very friendly crowd, Bill the Cockatoo working as a bouncer. Kitchen's changed hands but offers enough to keep the place full on a weekday 😊
P. M.
Friendly pub, good
Pub food with an interesting decor 'that's why its the Friend in Hand'
K. M. D.
COOL pub. Great food and a big cockatoo that talks
Also has a electronic 🚆 that travels all round the pub. Kid friendly
P. S.
Best pub in Sydney ....cold beer...great patrons...sensational food....a hidden gem in Cowper Street Glebe
T. F.
Nice pub but the restaurant menu doesn't really match it. There's an area with kids toys and a small beer garden in the back.
R. N.
Very friendly local, In the back streets of Glebe. Five minutes walk to Broadway shopping centre
A. R.
Great local joint with a cockatoo named George!! Excellent entertainment. Good value and quality food.
N. F.
Very good food and fun entertainment
K. A.
Very Nice Place with Great Beer
A. M.
Great local comedy spot, come here on Tuesdays for stand up $10, outdoor smoking area. Food is pretty mediocre for the price, but it is a pub and not a restaurant.
P. M.
New menu is very disappointing. Would recommend eating beforehand but the atmosphere is fantastic, and crab racing and comedy nights are great.
j. w.
It's relaxed staff r very friendly and patrons r always ready with a hi and a smile
E. I.
If you're a local you should fit in super well. Quirky place with fun staff. Food is good but quite pricey.
b. b.
Quirky would be understatement!
Good local friendly pub.
Georgina adding some colour and at times noise!
R. K.
A Glebe institution, resolutely friendly, decent to above decent food, Coopers on tap & a cockatoo. Oh & a free Jukebox with nothing after about 1990 on it!
K. K.
Abit of a wait on though kitchen knew and they gave myself and partner salt n pepper squid.
Pokie staff should kick out people who damage machines.
M. C.
Awesome pub which offers traditional meals at a good price and great value comedy for $10 on Thursday nights.
D. T.
Quirky, fun, friendly. A local in the true sense of the word. Good food, good selections of drinks. Onion rings are yum.
T. T.
Old school hidden gem, I absolutely love the memrobelia, friendly staff and all I'm all a classic Sydney pub.
T. S.
Great people and great atmosphere
N. S.
Great bar. Crab racing is a lot of fun on Wednesday. Salty muffins...yummi. The bar staff is super nice.
D. R.
Nice little pub with a friendly atmosphere and a crazy parrot. Food is hearty and inexpensive (steaks etc).
A. G.
One of the best pubs in Sydney. This place has more character than most of the trendy city bars combined
B. C.
Old-school pub with a live cockatoo. Now that Scubar is shutting down, this is probably the best place to watch crab racing in Sydney.
M. M. S.
Nice ambiance, quiet location and variety of spots to sit. Heard they also have Ping Pong tables, which you might need to book in advance.
E. M.
Cosy local joint with a hilarious cockatoo who has mastered the art of the belly scratch -- he squawks "scratch, scratch" and someone behind the bar comes to tend to him. Classic!
M. H.
Great venue, friendly staff. Reasonable prices.
G. L.
Cool place to be. I cycle around Sydney and its good to stop here for a beer. Staff are friendly.
A. H.
Great pub, friendly atmosphere..😄😄
G. G.
Love the atmosphere, the guiness and the company.
Z. M.
Good local with upgrade menu 👌 can recommend, new mngmt has impressed. Also points for taking covid seriously
G.
Tame cockatoo! Quirky little pub off the beaten track. Standard pub food - shnitzels, steak, fish & chips, and the like.
J. C.
Great pub, amazing place for kids with the toys, the fish tank, and the miniature train going around the bar!
A. O.
Best pub in Glebe. Eclectic mix of items with great vibes. Decent food as well.
S. S.
Great beer. Great schnitzel.
Will be calling in again.
M. W.
