The food here is exceptional and to be honest I forgot to photograph the second half of the meal as I was too excited and just wanted to eat it. They are amazing at gluten free too. Can’t wait to go back, drooling already at the thought.

Take a detour here! The food here is absolutely divine and offer a unique experience. Absolutely recommend the Coal Roasted Broccoli. The broccoli is soft and captures the smokiness from the coal and the crunchiness from the fried(?) quinoa provide a textural experience. Each dish was a flavour experience. And I found it quite enjoyable to experiment with each meal, whether it was assembling the Pork Belly Pancakes or mixing and matching the Gunpowdered Wagyu Brisket with the sides provided. Would definitely come back here again.

I had dinner here with four friends last night and overall very happy with the quality of the food. The menu was simple yet refined, the main concept was shared meals, and our waitress recommended two dishes per person so we went for 9 mains and 2 desserts. As they had a small ish menu, I can confidently say we’ve sampled 80% of their entire menu to give a fair review. The highlights of the night was the cured salmon and the fossilised carrots, the KFD was also very delicious and I’ve never really had fried duck quite as flavoursome and tender before. I also loved the nitro meringue - just the right amount of tartness to finish off the night. I would otherwise give this place a five star, however I need to take one star off for their service. For starters, when we arrive at 8, we were told the previous diners arrived late and they still had desserts to go which mean we had to sit outside. When we expressed that we were happy to have our meal outside, they never brought any menu to us as there was a miscommunication and they thought we were just sitting down to wait for our table to be ready. We didn’t get to our actual table until 8:30pm which was a shame. Later in the night, one waiter came to our table to ask whether we were still waiting for our desserts to be served when we’ve been waiting for a while with a new set of dessert plates and spoons in front of us, which I found quite strange. Also I’m also slightly concerned with the way they treat hygiene, as the waitress touched the tines of my fork while putting dishes down and the drinking end of my straw and I had to request for new fork and get rid of the straw for my drink. Overall, I would come back to try new menus but there’s something left to be desired in terms of the service and I would love to see that improve by our next visit.

Food was great. However it was a long wait between meals and a couple of drink orders were delivered wrong which is understandable for a Friday night. They may need a better system for table numbers to improve this. I understand it was a busy night.
I would highly recommend this place as it has high quality meals and the restaurant has a great relaxed feel.

Have been to Detour now quite a few times and absolutely love it. The atmosphere, staff and food are all amazing. Especially the staff, our server made a special one off drink for my Dad who has diabetes and wanted a mocktail with little to no sugar (was very nice). The manager was awesome to. The food was superb, being share plate orientated we ordered way to much but they happily packed it as a takeaway for us. Will be back there soon 😺.

Surprising and delicious food combinations with excellent service. I never thought broccoli and carrots could ever be my favourite dishes of dinner but they were amazing!! (Lamb was excellent too. Actually it all was and that is quite unusual to find.) Wait staff recommended two dishes each and sharing so consider that when reviewing the pricing but it was well worth it. Would recommend and would return.

Awesome well done menu which is excellent at catering to a diversity of tastes. It's designed around sharing and very cleverly so, readily allowing a mixed vegan / omnivore table to share well. So many great and really innovative choices and oh did I mention how good their music choices are (for a musical child of the 90s anyway).

I would loved to be able give a higher score, but the deliciousness of the food just couldn't save the poor service and the fact that they charge for tap water! The food was a dream and so beautifully and artfully presented! The menu seemed very intriguing and it really delivered! Unfortunately the service really ruined the experience. It started off fine, but then we were waiting ages for a refill on the tap water (we had to surprisingly purchase) and then the server forgot that we ordered another round of drinks. Although a Friday night, the fact that we could see our server standing around and the restaurant wasn't that busy was extremely disappointing. To the water! I find it extremely strange that in Brisbane a restaurant will charge $2.50 PER PERSON ($5 for two people) for chilled tap water! It may have been on the menu, but still! I expect this at bougey European restaurants, but just seemed extremely odd choice when every fancy restaurant I've been to in the City doesn't do this. Not a lot of money, just leaves a bad taste in the experience flavour. Overall, the food was amazing, but there are some kinks to work out...

The food was incredible but the service was terrible and negatively impacted the overall dining experience.
We booked over 3 months in advance for an end of year celebration and were notified on arrival that we would be seated on the outside picnic tables despite the restaurant being half empty. No mention of outside seating was made at the time of booking which is a pretty important detail for a lunch in the middle of summer.
The maitre d was rude and obnoxious. She constantly argued with us about how many dishes we ordered and in what order. One of our dishes wasn't brought to the table and we received 2 different stories about it.
We were ignored sitting outside and had to work to summon the attention of the wait staff while all of the tables inside received timely service.
I would suggest that if the restaurant can't reliably service the outside tables then don't offer them as an option.
We provided this feedback directly to the restaurant a few months ago but have received no reply.
It is a shame that a restaurant with such culinary genius is let down by poor service. I would not recommend this restaurant on this basis.

We should have read the sign and detoured around Detour.
Detour lost our order once and mangled it the second time, meaning we waited 3 hours for 7 dishes between 5 people. That by itself isn't terrible and it was easy to forgive our waiter who was dealing with stressful conditions, but was still very apologetic, friendly and otherwise attentive. What was terrible was how management dealt with it. They appeared to be more concerned with saving face than alleviating the issue. When they took our order the second time, an hour after they took our original, it would have been nice if they offered complimentary drinks to tide us over while we waited (again). When we went to pay they gave us the full bill unapologetically. When we politely asked if they could comp the drinks they seemingly acted ignorant to our evening's plight, even though this was the same manager who took our order the second time, and other staff members already confirmed the last two orders were lost and mangled. It's possible it was just a hectic night for them, but after two mistakes you think they'd pay a bit more attention to their customers. After that awkward confrontation they comped 2 of the 7 drinks we had that night.
I really hope Detour can learn from this and place the blame where it's deserved, not with the honest and apologetic waiter, but with the non-apologetic management.
On a happier note, we shared a combination of carnivore and herbivore dishes which were all scrumptious, with the herbivore dishes (Charcoal Broccoli, Pineapple Curry) standing out as the more interesting and tasty choices.

This was amazing! Set in an old building with exposed brick walls, timber ceiling. The place was clean with an old world charm. Staff were excellent, friendly and very knowledgeable on the menu and pairing with wines. The menu idea (for 2 people) is to order 2 "mains and a side dish" and share. The food was outstanding. We had the Emu tartare and the Wagyu brisket with a side of seawater potato. The chargrilled onions with the Tartare were worthy to be their own dish! The sauce on the seawater potato you wanted to bottle it and take home! Everything was delicious and at a very high standard. The food service was prompt without feeling rushed. Desserts were a wonderful treat to finish the experience there.

Detour was our last dinner in Australia and it was fantastic! The menu was full of unique, locally sourced foods that were prepared well! We had the master stock salmon with black ants, the emu tartare, the fossilized carrots, the coal roasted broccoli and the Kentucky fried duck. Everything was so good, beautifully prepared and the service was great. The chef delivered the food to the table and checked in on how we were enjoying the food.

These pics don’t do it enough justice. You have to visit Detour to understand why the food is so good. The thoughtful combinations of flavours just work! First time dining here and won’t be the last. It’s great that they’re open on a Monday.
Would recommend for couples or small groups. Food is best enjoyed shared. Service was spot on. Best thing about dining here on a Monday was parking was a breeze. Thought I’d made a hooking but it didn’t go through for some reason. This was not a problem for the venue. We were seated with haste and respect and offered water quickly.
Our friend had dined here before and said it’s the type of place where you want to come back to again and again just to try everything on the menu. I agree!
Loved that vegetables are hero dishes just as much as their meat loving cousins. Sometimes reviews on sites such as AGFG don’t live up to expectations. Fortunately this cannot be said about Detour. Well worth the 45 min drive from home to here.

This place is really confusing. The menu and price gives fine dining but the layout, music and atmosphere gives casual dining especially with the rock music being played and how noisy it is. I would be exceptionally mad if I were seated outside on the footpath in the heat. The waitress seemed quite passive aggressive when my partner and I ordered two seperate meals each and explained how it's a progressive menu and we should be sharing. Can't really share when one person eats meat and the other doesn't so why judge or make comments when it's not your dinner? Water charged to the table at $5 for two people. Cheaper dishes seem to be entree sized but aren't signed as such? Dishes come out at different times with one "entree" coming out after a main? The seawater potatoes honestly tasted like mashed potatoes before you mash them. Overall, the experience left me confused after honestly hearing such wonderful things about this place for years 🤔

Brisket is not recommended. Quite uninteresting flavour combination and only mid on the cooking and cut. The wagyu did not shine.
Broccoli was very good. Perfect texture and flavour of a camp fire.
Lamb was also alright, the cut is not on the bone and frenched, so don't expect that.

A simple but yet fantastic Australian restaurant experience.
Their menu is balanced between Herbivore and Omnivore dishes, which offer plenty variety for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Even as a meat eater myself, I found the herbivorous dishes delectable and visually stunning on the table.
That being said I definitely recommend the Wagyu Beef Brisket as it was melt in your mouth amazing.

What a wonderful and stylish restaurant. The style and presentation is very warming and inviting. The staff were all very friendly and looked like they were smiling even while wearing their masks to be Covid safe. The wine list is quite varied for those who love wine.
We had the lamb, the KFD (duck), the pumpkin and the potatoes. They were all divine. The flavours and textures were amazing. Of special note though was the pumpkin. It was dusted with a ash like seasoning made from the pumpkin seeds. Then had honey comb made from maple syrup on top. And maple syrup drizzled over all of it. The taste sensation was beyond amazing. We highly recommend it.
We would love to thank the staff for their exceptional service. Jorge you are an excellent host who made our night perfect.

Exceptional dining experience worthy of its current top ten Brisbane restaurant ranking! Foods you know prepared and presented very differently not just for the sake of it but because it makes them next level taste better.
Service was knowlegable, enthusiastic, attentive and genuine by every different staff member we encountered. A worthy special occasion venue and if you stick to the herbivores side of the menu actually very affordable experience for a restaurant at this level.
Nearly totally gluten-free menu and our waiter was able to instantaneously name the 3 dishes that weren't, what contained gluten that was in them and how they were modifiable without even thinking about having to go back to the kitchen to check! Amazing.
I am however confounded by the several one star and other bad reviews on here for service, unless they just got exceptional bad luck (given the very obvious high level of training and attention to detail I find that seriously hard to believe).
If those reviews are making you consider whether to "risk" coming here or not I would seriously ignore them because not only is worth it, I can only imagine those reviews most likely say far more about the reviewers than the restaurant.

Had lunch at Detour yesterday after reading all the reviews and it did not disappoint, the food was delicious. A cut above anything available at home on the sunshine coast. The broccoli dish was one of the yummiest things I have ever eaten and I never thought I'd say that about broccoli!. Another standout was the wagu beef, it melted in your mouth. The restaurant caters equally for vegetarian and meat eaters, which is rare!.

The food was amazing, and the service was great with the exception of a dish we ordered not being processed. When we asked whether it was coming, they owned up to the error and advised it would be out shortly. Some time later after waiting, we were told that we would be given the bill and no further food as we needed to vacate for another booking. This was very disappointing as we travelled quite some distance for a valentines dinner, and missed out of a dish we were looking forward to. Likely will not return due to this.

Well, our experience didn’t begin that well because the day we booked we turned up and they were closed (Valentine’s Day) but we got rebooked for 2 days later which was fine. When we arrived we got a kind of glum waiter, and the table was kind of sticky and I thought I could smell something weird near our table (but I’m pregnant so that’s not saying much)... I was kind of worried it was going to be a sub-par dining experience but boy was I wrong!
We moved to a different table which was nice and clean with fresh air, and different staff came and served us at some points and they were super personable and friendly! Then, when the dishes arrived we were both so pleasantly surprised! The Broccoli dish was the most delishious meal I’ve had in a very long time! And then the Hawaiian Curry was sooo beautifully presented and all of the flavours were so exciting and worked together so well. We also ordered two side dishes and a delicious meringue dessert which was absolutely superb! We will be bringing our friends and family back there. So impressed with the food and overall experience👌✨

Service a 5, food a 3, price for the level of food a 1 - you can get better food for half the price.
KFD was juicy however lacking salt and flavour - with the cornbread being dry. The sour cream could have also had spices added to it to make up for the lack of flavour in the duck. For $34 you except to get more than two mere drumsticks.
The herbivore dishes were also similar in their lack of complexities, it is as if their target market hasn't eaten anything spicier than capsicum and eats plain white flossy bread with their margarine for breakfast.

AMAZING!! If you haven't already been to Detour......Go Now!! Service was spot on and the food was next level good! The food here was exemplary! The gunpowder salmon in particular was an excellent blend of that classic salmon taste with a touch of something extra in the "gunpowder" coating. My husband took me here for our 2nd year wedding anniversary dinner and I thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. The concept of the restaurant was explained by our very personable waiter and we eagerly ordered the Broccoli/Miso/ Spinach dish and the Pork Belly/Pancake dish with a side salad. The food was amazing, such a great texture/ mouth sensation and flavour. We ordered the perfect amount for two people and had the goats cheesecake with honey for dessert. The goats cheesecake was quite a strong flavour, but paired perfectly with the honey. We even had the opportunity to try two little edible bees, which were placed on top.

The positives - Food was absolutely phenomenal, really 5/5. Had dishes there that I had never had before. Good mix of vegetable and meat dishes, and some awesome combinations.
Style of eating was a great idea, shared plates and communal which made for great table conversation and electric atmosphere.
Good attentive wait staff, knowledgable on the wine list. Kept the drinks flowing. On the face of it a bit pricey, but given the quality of the food, I actually thought it was good value.
The not so positive - Food service was really slow on the night we went. Yes it was a Saturday night, and yes it was busy, however the share plates we coming about initially at the rate of 1 per hour. 1 hour wait for a spoon full of beetroot is not ideal. Things did speed up at the end however as the place emptied. When we discussed with the staff, we were told its just because everyone books for 7. Fair enough, staffing should reflect that or turn bookings away maybe?
For some reason the front door is left open, and on a 10C Brisbane evening it can get fairly drafty. When we asked if it could be closed we were told No - because it gets too hot with it closed apparently.
Did the negatives spoil our evening? No, it was a great night - great food and great atmosphere. Would I go back? Absolutely, just maybe not on a Saturday night or book later. Thanks Detour

The waitress could not explain the dining concept. At first it sounded like we (6 pax) should order 5 dishes ($24 to $38) and share, then we were advised to order 2 each of those 5 dishes (would make quite a pricey lunch). When ordering we were then advised that some dishes were suitable for 1 and some for 3! Much confusion. In the end we ordered 1 dish each and shared. However, one person's meal did not come out until everyone else had finished!
The food was great, hence the overall 3 star rating, but I don't think I will go back. It was too much hard work.

Do yourself a favour and get to Detour before there's a 3 month waiting list! This restaurant far exceeded our expectations - the food is outstanding (I'll come back to that), the service is the best in Brisbane (I'll come back to that too), the prices, especially the wines, are, for the quality of the food and service, really reasonable. Let's start with the food - the pumpkin is an explosion of flavour, so yummy I had to check it was legal, the salmon is a must (order these two dishes when booking your table as I suspect they will become everyone's favourites), and the vegan dessert you simply have to order. Every dish we had was a fabulous experience in itself. What is so grown up about this 'share plate' restaurant and I believe sets it apart is rather than dishes arriving on your table until the tabletop is so full of plates you can't find your fork, or in the order the waiter writes them down (if they remember to) often losing their heat before you get to them, or depending on the dish preparation time (really lazy), at Detour you receive 2 at a time delivered by competent staff on the advice of the head chef presenting dishes with flavours that compliment one another. Amazing! The staff - I'm sorry I didn't get your names so I could thank you personally in this review - our English rose, the distinguished gentleman and of course the very talented, skilled and super nice head chef. Thank you very much for giving my friends and I a fantastic Saturday night. My husband and I are foodies - I think we'll be taking the Detour to the Gabba a lot more often now!
