The ambiance was nice and clean. The pricing for the size of food we got was decent. The service was quick. We ordered two dishes, I didn’t quite enjoy the hot and sour dumpling soup but the char keow teow was good. Overall it was a decent experience.

I was trying to go Akiba, but ended up at the CBD dumpling house. It is impossible to get a table at any restaurant at the Canberra centre whether inside the shopping mall or outside. This restaurant luckily has plenty of tables, we only waited a few minutes. There is so much food on the menu to choose from typical of a Chinese restaurant making it hard to choose what to eat. Typically most people choose boiled dumplings and steamed dumplings. We also tried their hokkein fried which was delicious with a nice yellow moist rice with diced mushroom, prawn and scallop. I would have loved if the plate was larger because it’s simply tasty and wanted to eat more. The rice is only enough for 1-2 people only and would require additional plates for large groups. The vegetables with garlic sauce was tasty as well and the portion of this dish was decent for 2-3 serving. Service is great, easy to get a table, food served quickly and friendly staff. Pricing is decent while some of the dishes such as the hokkein rice could have been much bigger my only complaint. One of the most popular and reliable Chinese restaurants in the city. I’ve been here many times since it’s opened and have been pretty happy each visit. On the most recent occasion I had the combination Laksa and pan fried dumplings. All reasonably priced and not bad serving size. The dumplings are hand made and we ordered a unique flavour, but were a little dry. Service was pretty good too. Overall a nice place for dinner or lunch, with a nice lively atmosphere.

Although the salty pork chop was too salty, they took it off the bill for us which is great. If you order it, be sure to ask for it to be less salty as the flavor can become too overwhelming after a few pieces. The house special fried rice however was fantastic, nice and fragrant. Really good serving. The quality of food is top notch. The dumplings are good, but options are limited for a dumpling place. The fish is very crispy and cooked nicely. Good variety of Chinese dishes. Everything from dumplings, seafood, noodles to rice based dishes. They also serve mixed dumplings if you'd like a variety. Their garlic based stir fry is good; be it Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce or prawns and seasonal vegetables with garlic. Service is quick and the chefs behind the window are always friendly and good to the kids.

Got a takeaway as it was too crowded to dine in on a Friday night, bought the chilli basil chicken fried rice and boiled chicken dumplings. The portion size for the fried rice is big and it was tasty, I had it for 2 served. The boiled chicken dumplings were the clear winner! 14 pieces for $11 (approx) was a really good deal, it was filling and tasty with and without the sauce vinegar chilli sauce. Had to wait about 20 minutes for my takeaway, good service even though the staff were really busy that night.

Service is good. But food is really average. We had coconut juice which tasted very watered down. The beef stew with brown sauce was extremely fatty to the point it was gross afterwards. It was like 50/50 meat and fat. Dumplings with soup inside was good but not superb. All in all it was an ok Experience probably wont be back there again nor will recommend to my friends.

It was Friday lunchtime. There were about 10 tables taken and we got a table straight away. We have been here a few times. As we sat down a waiter was setting up the table next to us. I was shocked that she used 4 of her fingers to "dip" in the 4 glasses to move them round, and then wipe around the table with the same hand! She then proceeded with more wiping the next table.... We ordered fried rice, pretty bland, certainly not hot when we had it. This was followed by scallops with XO sauce. XO sauce was a diverse name used to describe seafood concoction with a slight chilli sambal flavour. Well this didn't taste any way near the "sambal" background flavour, more like a "black beans" sauce. The only great thing about the scallops dish is that it has a generous amount of them. The last dish was fresh fried dumplings. It was freshly made, we were Informed that it will take sometime. The dough was fine, filling was very moist and has enough juices as per tradition, but it did not have any flavour and that was very disappointing. Service was fine but it took us a 20 seconds of hand waving to attract service for order. One lady dressed in black top was caressing her ear loop which have stone studs, maybe its hurting or newly punched! In general, it was an ok place to eat but nothing special. For me, it seems to have gone downhill since the last few time of attendance. Nothing to shout about. Yes, I have visited Shanghai and Peking cities and would say I have taken these style of cooking. When I paid for the meal, all straight forward .But there was not a "thank you" or have a great day. Not that I need it but if I am the owner, I will want my staff to go the extra mile. Oh, I noticed that staffs have their own drinking bottles or containers in the bar bench and an assortment of medication/cream on "display". This makes the place "cheap"! Just saying. Coming back again, yes but i am prepared for what this place is like.

Literally have never found a restaurant that is always so consistently good with their food. Service is good as well, they’re attentive without being annoying eg. your teapot will be refilled once you ask for it but the staff won’t come and ask you how your meal is going unnecessarily. My partner and I come here probably once every few weeks - sometimes we order new dishes and other times just our usual. Tonight we got the duck pancakes, steamed bbq pork buns, Chinese broccoli with garlic and fried rice. Duck pancakes - I like them but traditionally served with spring onion. 4/5 Bbq pork buns - prefer a more fluffy bun but they’re generous with their meat here. 4/5 Chinese broccoli with garlic - larger serve than most Chinese restaurants and cooked perfectly. 5/5 Fried rice - it’s hard to get a fried rice wrong but it’s harder to make it as good as CBD Dumpling House does, great proportion of pork and prawn to rice and lots of prawn! 10/5 It was about $50 tonight with a public holiday surcharge - it is usually slightly cheaper but I thoroughly enjoyed dinner tonight!

Chinese cusine have come a long way in Canberra over the past 6 to 7 years. In fact the food scenes overall has flourished. This dumpling establishment proved today that really know their dumplings. We had the boiled pork dumplings and the pan fried mixed collection of dumplings. Both were great and reminded me of the delicious home cooked meals at grandma's all those years ago. They also venture away dumplings with dishes such as the peking duck pancakes and sambel mixed vegetables which were good but not the top of the class. For example the peking duck pancakes traditionally utilise the skin of selected ducks with only thin layers of fat and flesh attached, but here it is more flesh centric. Its different and in my opinion loses some of the rich flavours and mouth feel that you would get in the traditional approach. Overall a good experience and the place is beautifully designed with the open kitchen.

Love the dumplings here. Tasty! We're a bit of a fan if the fried dumplings, usually going with the chicken, pork and beef. Sometimes adding the vege for goid measure. Also - make sure you include the Shanghai Pork steamed dumplings. Yummo! Word of warning for the uninitiated though - they are hot. Feel okay on the outside - but the soupy juicy goodness inside is just shy of lava temperature. Let it cool a bit. Also - for something different, add the dry fried shantung lamb. Omg - so good. The only thing that some people may find annoying is that it's loud inside. And that's petty much just because the place is always packed!

Best table number ever. I had the Egg Noodle Wonton Soup, it is my go to, slightly disappointed as it was under flavoured for my liking. The wontons were plentiful but again, lacking a touch of flavour. In addition I had the trio entree of prawn toast, spring roll and, I want to say dim sum? Anyway very tasty trio and a nice large serve. I will go back and try another dish as the vibe is pretty good. Prices are fair. I would like to give 3.5 stars 3 feels harsh but 4 is a step too far.

The place was busy!!! That's what attracted us to come try their food. Busy always a good sign, & it was really good. Even until the last minute before they closed the door, there were still people coming, in groups!!! The kitchen was covered in glass so customers can see what the people do in the kitchen. Which is nice. Parking is very close, just right opposite the restaurant. Only a few steps away. We were there in the evening around 10pm & it was free parking. I love their chilli sauce & one of the waitress kindly show me what brand of chilli sauce they used. I really appreciated the gesture. Will come back for sure.

Solid choice for Chinese and dumplings in civic. Being a Din Tai Fung fan I feel this place is on par but maybe just falls short. That's not a criticism but provides some context. Decent food, big serves and not expensive! The sweet and sour tofu and the panfried pumpkin and prawn dumplings are both really great. Some of the noodle dishes are a bit tasteless but adding soy sauce is an easy fix. Service is good, although at times can be quite rushed. Overall, decent restaurant with lots of options.

I'm giving this place four stars because my friend gave them two. He was raised on this cuisine and wouldn't know a decent, old fashioned, country style, Chinese restaurant if he was drowning in a vat of pink sweet and sour pork. He's probably right. This place is probably just bad. I can vouch for him because he's often right. See that other review where that lady added soy sauce to her noodles because they had no flavour? Problem fixed if you're easy to please. Two stars as a starting point, an extra two because I want to start trouble. I have never eaten here before.

Love love love this place. It's our go to for delicious dumplings and authentic Cantonese fare. The beef fried noodles are a must! As with duck pancakes. They take bookings for busy nights (Fridays and Saturdays), so definitely phone ahead to reserve a table to save you from waiting in the cold.

The dumplings we had were hot, fresh and delicious, but they were on the pricier side than what you would expect from your average local Chinese restaurant, but I'm assuming you're paying for the atmosphere and more dedicated table service. Overall, I wouldn't mind going again for a more formal occasion, but in terms of quality and pricing, you can find cheaper and similar quality elsewhere.

My first experience at this dumpling house was a work function - a farewell to a work colleague. There was plenty of water and a good atmosphere, if a bit loud as it does get very busy. If you don’t mind that though this restaurant has good atmosphere and is very popular for a good reason - good quality food at a reasonable price. Service is decent and our group walked away happy.

Superb value for money. This is one of my favourite places to go in the city. Portions are generous and the Shantung Lamb is a must-try! Tip: Go just a bit earlier before the lunch and dinner peak periods to get a table quick. It’s not uncommon to see a queue leading out the door for this place. You know it’s good when you see Chinese customers lining up and enjoying their meals inside :)

Just had a hankering for childhood Aussie Chinese classics; sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken and broccoli in oyster sauce. Add prawn and pumpkin dumplings and prawn and pork dumplings and you've got a feast for six people. $75 for everything. Great price, excellent quality (although be careful of the takeaway container with the lemon sauce - small spill in the bag, it was T/A). Service with a beautiful smile and a huge bag of prawn chips to boot. The only problem is that it's so good we all ate too much. Thanks for a great dinner!

We had Bbq Pork Buns, Vegetarian Spring Rolls, Honey Chicken and Peking Duck Pancakes. I 100% reccomend all of them. The Duck Pancakes were the best I have ever had! You make them yourself at the table so you can choose how much sauce goes in etc. All food arrives very very quickly and extremely hot!
