Date/time of visit: 19 April 2022, 8:00pm
An excellent steak house that has many years of experience. I used to visit Ball & Chain Grill with my parents on a regular basis during the 1980s. It was always exciting to visit back then and just as exciting now. The meals have become more refined since the 1980s but the essence and atmosphere of the steak house remains as I remember it. The quality of the meals is excellent. The steaks are grilled with care and the sauces are wonderful. You may need a reservation during busy times of the year. We walked in off the street, without a reservation, and there was a short wait to be seated with three couples before us similarly waiting. The venue is cozy. The menu has more than just steaks. The staff are excellent.

What a little gem. Arrived tonight without a booking and they accommodated us with no fuss. The steak was absolutely amazing, cooked to perfection, service was impeccable and a short stroll from our hotel. Highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back when we next return to Tasmania.

Glad we discovered this place while visiting the Salamanca Market. We came back to Salamanca the following night for dinner. Lovely ambiance, friendly and attentive staff, delicious meats from the grill, as well as, a tasty seafood chowder and gorgeous roast beetroot, walnut and feta salad. The only let down was the Tuscan salad, they need to check the recipe because it was not even close, a few cherry tomatoes, coz, Spanish onion and croutons. But I’ll forgive them for the one let down, as the rest of the food was excellent.

Had lunch here. Was bloody amazing. Steak was perfect. Plum and ginger sauce was so tasty. Staff are super attentive and friendly. Really lovely inside too. Recommend.

Friendly service, and delicious Tasmanian Pinot noir (glass 12$, served under the reference line level, not generous) ,
I waited only 6 minutes on a Monday night, for a rumpsteak.
I was just walking on the street and I came there today as I have seen the matured beef at the entrance. I have asked if it was 2 weeks maturation and the boss told me 9 weeks !!! So exceptional!
The 300g eye fillet was cooked well, (asked rare), all good but wasn't the tastiest steak I've had in the last year by any means (France, Argentina).
The problem of communication and understanding as the chief boss told me dry-age matured beef of 9 weeks!!! (5 weeks on the fridge, and 4 weeks in the mature room), so as I am a fan of these kind of tasty matured meat , but the color meat was very red and not matured more than 10 days. Contrary at what has been said, It was not the same beef as in the entrance matured box room . That’s the only problem for me. It was important as I choose only selected beef and usually eat it ecologically, just once every 15 days. I came there only to taste this matured beef.
The accompanying pickled cabbage, 1 black carrot, potatoes gratin dauphinois, asparagus, brocoli were all nice, if not a little light in their serving size.
Hardly could ask for a piece of a natural bread, but they brought me a slice of unfresh bread from 2 days ago, not fresh, and they billed 6$ for it !
Overall, a nice meal, but disappointed by the maturation of the beef. A twenty days maturation beef should smell very strong and the color is not red but darker. So 4 weeks maturation should be more, and it wasn’t.
If I would have known, I would not come.

Our November 21 visit to ball n chain did not disappoint. 1.4kg tomahawk, seafood chowder and drinks. Your visit to Salamanca wouldn't be complete without a visit here.
Outstanding as always thank you...
P. L.
Amazing. We first visited for dinner over ten years ago when visiting from Perth. All these years later it is still the best steaks we have ever had. Great options for steak choice, sizes, cooking style and sauces. Even the vegetables come wrapped in bacon. Delicious and really good service from the wait staff. We had lunch on the way through Hobart before flying home. A really great way to end our holiday.
H. F.
The food was really great! Steaks where cooked very well and sized and priced well! The Greek kebab’s where also very yummy! The oysters and not too bad very flavourful! The desserts and drinks are perfect and the menu here for all courses catered to any Body’s preferences! The staff where extremely friendly and made the experience that little bit better! Such a cool and historical location as well! Can’t really fault the Ball & Chain Grill! I shall be returning here soon! Great work guys!
D. E.
Great meal. My steak was cooked to perfection and the sticky date pudding was delicious. Service was very good too.
J. C.
Recommended by a local and it did not disappoint. I ordered the 500g porterhouse and it's up there as one of the nicest steaks I've had, I'm still thinking about it!! Not alone was the food top notch but the staff were helpful and friendly, the restaurant manager on the night we visited (31 Jan 2022) is a great person. We will definitely return when we get back to Hobart.
S. N.
Really enjoyed the food here. Apparently been here for decades.
Staff are very welcoming and accommodating.
Lots of steak choices, really well presented.
The wine list is extensive and features many Tassie wines.
The venue has loads of character.
Highly recommend checking this out.
J. L.
We went back to the restaurant 2 nights in the row with my parents. Excellent meat and well worth the price especially for the Tomahawk. Excellent service from the staff, enjoyed the conversation with Jeremy and awesome service from Kelly. Ball and Chain really knows their meat and the recommendation of the wine and whisky are really to the notched!! If we ever go back to Hobart, we will go back there. Regards to the staff from Jordan and families
G. R.
A MUST VISIT! If you're searching for a place to eat some amazing steak, drink beautiful wines, along with great atmosphere and service, this is definitely the place!
b. l.
Had the most amazing meal, staff were terrific , service was 1st class. The seafood chowder for entree was large serving, chocked full of fresh seafood, it’s a must have. Shared an 800g rib eye on the bone cooked perfectly to medium rare, the blue cheese and red currant & thyme jus sauces were also excellent. Will definitely be returning!
K. M.
Ball & Chain is a classic traditional steakhouse. The cuts are quality, cooked to perfection and served with just the right amount of accompaniments. There is an extensive wine list, not a huge amount by the glass but quality and stocking good local wines as well. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient.
J. P.
Exceptional meal, service and friendliness. Was so impressed we went back again during our 6 night stay in Hobart.
Steak was cooked exactly as asked.
Could not fault it.
D. Z.
Personally, I like their steak more than next door, and they have better seafood chowder as well. I prefer small or medium size steak, large one was easy to get over burned on outside. The salads bar offered many good veg choices, I highly recommend Ball & Chain Grill.
I changed my five star review, because the lobster was not fresh.
C. K.
Beautiful food as always. Definitely one of the best places for steaks!
E. D.
As an ex -Tasmanian on holiday my wife and I again had to visit this Restaurant. Holidaying with us were 2 couples from Scotland and Sydney. We booked a table for 6 last Tuesday evening. The evening was perfect. The food, the choice of wine/drinks, the service and the atmosphere were WOW!!!. The iceing on the cake came with the personal approach and hospitality extended to us by the co-owner CRAIG. Thank you again so much Craig.
B. W.
Nothing like a 1 5 kg tomahawk and tassies best steakhouse.
Service was amazing too, made us very welcome
J. B.
Such good food for both adults and kids. My 9yo said if we came back to Hobart she wanted to come back for dinner. Steak and jus was super tasty and cooked as ordered. Would go back for sure.
I. B.
Great place at Salamanca. Enjoyed our meal. Had a small issue with one of the meals which was quickly rectified. My steak was cooked to perfection. Staff were excellent.
C. K.
I booked a table early to make sure we had a table with good lighting was told we would be on table in atrium with good lighting. We arrived to a small booth table in a corner, bit disappointed as had been looking forward to our trip to Hobart for 12 months for my 60th but due to covid was postponed. The waitresses tried to find a better table but fully booked in atrium. The service we recieved from waitresses was excellent they were friendly and apologetic and I felt guilty for displaying my disappointment onto them. I apologised of course but still felt the booking procedure is lacking. My husband had Seafood Chowder was very tasty and he thoroughly enjoyed it. My Med rare steak was cooked just the way I like but vegetables which was a lovely selection but lukewarm same as the mushroom bacon sauce. I think if you pay top dollar everything should be better than the average pub meal. Sorry for not a glowing review. Waitresses were lovely but maybe a free drink, dessert for our inconvenience might have been appropriate but that is not up to them its management. The atmosphere and decor was lovely and to see such a authentic site. But maybe lost the authentic personal service, of Aussies. Hope this is constructive criticism
A. P. H.
Very nice steak and kebab, service was good too, totally worth the money we spent.
S. R.
Friendly service, and delicious Tasmanian Cabernet Sauvignon whilst I waited 30 or so minutes on a Monday night, for a steak. The 300g eye fillet was cooked well, but wasn't the tastiest steak I've had in the last year by any means. The peppercorn gravy was nice but nothing to write home about.
The accompanying pickled cabbage, 3 half sauteed potatoes, and bacon wrapped green beans and carrot were all nice, if not a little light in their serving size.
Overall, a nice meal, but might try another place next time I'm in Hobart, rather than rush back.
W. S.
We visited on Tuesday night and enjoyed some great white fish ceviche, gravlax salmon then fillet steak just cooked perfectly. Desert was the peanut butter ice cream and sticky date pudding. The service is fantastic with special thanks to Dylan who looked after us very well helped us waddle out. You have to go if you are in Hobart.
M. T.
Been going here for years travelling down from the mainland. Never disappointed. Pity COVID times have taken away the self service area, but the steaks are 100 percent perfect every time. Any place that has Penfolds Grange Magnums on show has to be quality right?
S. M.
Whilst the food was tasty, it was expensive for the size of the meals. We ordered the char grill prawns to share as an entree. They were $24 for 3 prawns. Very expensive. Also ordered the vege stack. There was only 1 piece of sweet potato, 2 pieces of zucchini and 2 slices of eggplant. Scattered around the plate was a couple of cherry tomatoes and a bit of balsamic vinegar. At $26 this is grossly overpriced. Probably wouldn’t return here next time we are in Hobart.
J. J.
Magnificent meals our steaks cooked to perfection. Service outstanding. Well done Jing and the team, highly recommended. We will be back.
R. &. B. S.
Good food, great eye fillet steak. No atmosphere.
Hopefully no other private diners had to share the upstairs dining area with us, it was extremely loud.
J. B.
My wife and I are only in hobart visiting for four nights and we have now eaten here twice as the food was so great the first time. Our second night here didnt dissapoint! Service was fantastic both nights and the food was amazing. It's hard to find such a good steak! Would recommend!
D. L.
Do not miss an opportunity to visit. Amazing food and atmosphere!
K. C.
A large group of us from Melbourne had the best night while in Hobart. The food was exceptional and the service we received from Jamie was outstanding. We would highly recommend.
J.
I love this place. These guys execute the essential matters so well. They've got nothing fancy but great service, drink, and food. It's funny how hard to find places these basic things are done right. The steak was cooked to perfection, and other dishes just deliver what you need. I feel the price is even cheap thanks to so many businesses are overcharging for the fancy sh*t. Highly recommended
S. H. L.
Lovely steak but good to know you don't need to order side dishes as the mains come with veggies. Service from the lovely Will was terrific.
Y. Z.
Very friendly staff and they are very helpful and really good service.
Soup of the day is a bit too salty (Lobster and prawn), can taste the very strong lobster flavor by using the lobster head oil although didn't manage to find the lobster meat...(all of them are prawn inside the soup)
Highly recommend lamb rack, it is the most tender meat I have ever eat in Tassie. :)
N. N.
Great restaurant for any occasion. We had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant on our last Tassie holiday and now is our go to for a perfectly cooked steak when in Hobart. Great service too.
F.
Fantastic atmosphere to eat delicious food and wine, staff were impeccably polite and knowledgeable in pairing the right wine with each menu item. The salad bar that came with dinner was incredibly fresh and well presented. Cannot recommend highly enough.
M. J.
Brilliant dining experience, excellent menu with an extensive wine cellar offering. Staff were excellent and the steaks were divine!
J. Z.
Came here back in the early 2000's when deployed with the US Navy. We had a port visit and was lucky to come across this place. Still one of the best steaks ive ever had was here. Highly recommend it.
L. B.
The food did not disappoint - everything we had was delicious. Pâté entree, Beef Cheeks & Greek Skewers mains and onion ring side - everything was amazing 👌🏼 highly recommend!
C. S.
Service has improved from my visit a year ago. Food taste just as great if not better on this visit. Definitely a meat lovers restaurant.
Sad that the salad bar isn't around due to covid :(
Make a booking as it is very busy! But if you walk in, the wait isn't that long, about 20 to 30 minutes.
One of our regular places to dine when visiting Tassie now.
L.
This restaurant sets the benchmark for all restaurants.
I don't like a lot of restaurants.
So that says a lot.
The chef's definately cook like they have shares in the business.
D. A.
Excellent experience at the ball and chain, food was great and the service was even better, staff were really friendly and we more then happy to help us with anything we needed. Their menu was very diverse, every cut in all different sizes and some of them near 2kg for the big eaters
T. M.
This place has always served up great food - the Eye Fillet steaks were cooked to perfection, coupled with a garlic and blue cheese sauce or a red currant and thyme jous ( our selections) made for a lovely meal.
K. E.
Had a great dinner here - the steaks were cooked perfectly and all the staff were friendly.
K. S.
Fantastic food and the dessert was to die for. We were waited on by a lady called Kristy. She was fantastic!! Best server ever!!!!
G. T.
I came there twice in 2 different seasons and well the staff was nice and professional in advising menu and special dishes. I love the restaurant theme. A bit vintage but warmly cosy. Good idea for a date 😍
About food. Chicken liver pate was good but I think it is suitable for wi ter season since summer it is a bit too hot and pate with breads is too dry for me. Oyster was nice enough to eat the 2nd dish. Lol
Grilled trout is beautiful and steak is charcoal grill I belive. U can enjoy everything on salad station.
Overall I had a good time there enjoying the view and the time with my family.
a. t.
Best restaurant on salamanca strip. Food was supurb and reasonably priced. Nice surroundings and cosy atmosphere. If you bring BYO be prepared to pay $10 corkage. We felt that cost was a bit stiff.
T. T.
I was there as part of a tour group. Pleasant service. Pork belly was nice.
Steaks were overcooked for most in the group. The "medium well" not only had no pink color in the meat but was charred over more than half the meat.
Learnt from the waiter that charring is all part of the charcoal grilling method for both the fish and steaks.
B. A.
I always visit the Ball & Chain when in Hobart paper crusted rump steak 500 gram is the best
K.
Had our anniversary dinner there. Very good food and super friendly staff. Very reasonable priced. I want to go again.
M. M.
The salad bar was done away with because of Covid, but definitely don’t order a vegetarian dish at a steak restaurant.
S. S.
Steak was fantastic. So were the chips. The salad bar was nothing special. The service was good with very friendly staff. Great place for families. Warm atmosphere. Definitely worth a revisit.
D.
The best slow cooked lamb shanks I have ever had. First experienced it a year ago, came back for more this year, will definitely go back before this time next year. The lamb shanks alone would be enough to bring me back again and again, but there's more! Their pepper gravy is proper pepper gravy, its been slightly different the two times I've been here but both times were great! Speaking of great, so is their mashed potato. Next time I visit Ball & Chain I'd like to try a steak dipped in pepper gravy before being grilled, yep, they do that!
I like everything about this place, great food, great service, great building with an interesting history that you can read about on the menu (do it!), and all at a fair price which I appreciate. Their wine selection is also great and from a quick glance it appears that they have a wide selection of other alcoholic beverages as well.
I highly recommend Ball & Chain and I will definitely return on my next trip to Hobart.
A. C.
Behold convict built building in Salamanca Place. Went for lunch. Plates we had were Pie of the day, meat in curry, Salmon pate, Lamb kebabs, and couple of steaks. All delicious. Highly recommend a visit
J. C.
I found the Ball & Chain to be a tad overpriced for the quality. Ordered the eye fillet medium but had to send it back because it was almost blue at the fatter end. Unique taste given the way the steak is cooked, quite enjoyable.
Salad bar is a nice touch and necessary considering the long wait for steaks, but quality of the selection could certainly be improved.
Service was average; seemed rather inattentive and haphazard.
Dessert pretty nice! Extensive wine list, though mostly bottles and not much by the glass.
C. M.
Great staff, fantastic food n service. Great location. A must visit in Hobart.
E. W.
Tried the tomahawk and it was perfectly cooked! Probably the best tomahawk I've ever had. On top of that, there's a salad bar with condiments like pickles, salad and pasta complimentary. Plus the citrus cheesecake at the end was divine. Service was extremely top notch - we were well served all night. For someone who isn't a local in Tassie, I was thoroughly impressed! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Hobart 😊
A. L.
Steaks great as usual but please please bring back the salad bar ( or a covid safe version of it)! The steaks would be even better with the legendary salads.
N. H.
Good steaks, with a nice selection of buffet-style side dishes. The staff were also very friendly and helpful, whilst making you feel comfortable in the restaurant.
K. D.
Delicious meal, my chicken dish was cooked to perfection...Service great.
D. R.
Delicious food very nice place and Kristy our waitress was wonderful
r.
Nice be atmosphere, service abit slow , not the best steak meal l ever had but the sauce was nice
J. U.
Excellent steak! Really well priced and catered for gluten free with care. Would recommend
A. P.
Visited this spot after a friends recommendation and I'm so glad we did! Amazing charcoal steaks, with an unlimited salad bar. The mulled wine on a cold winter's night was a great idea; thanks for the suggestion by our waiter. Definitely coming back!
X. B.
Tasty succulent steak, Greek kebab and yummy sauces, we all loved the food!!
The wait staff was not exceptional, however. Making us wait despite the booking, and continually changing different team members making half hearted inquiries. At least no errors with the food. And it's worth it for the food, and nice interior.
Only be aware that it's not a low budget restaurant - for four people with 1x entree, 4x mains, 1x dessert, 2x glasses of wine, rum+coke, water & juice it was a total of $250
R. L.
Awesome food, fantastic service, fabulous atmosphere. Thanks guys for another great night, we will always come back when we come to Hobart.
L. S.
Amazing place, steaks are great! Also good at entertaining little ones. Great friendly staff.
The sides are in a "all you can eat" style not my kind of thing. Sides where all cold.
J. 4. a.
Great food, lovely staff
D. C.
Our go to place in Hobart when we want a steak. Never let us down. Great wine list too, even for just a glass. Staff all great. Can't fault the place
S. R.
Excellent service, lovely building, fantastic food and wine list. Scotch steaks were delicious and all cooked exactly as ordered
M. S.
Food and service was great.
L. S.
Had an excellent time with new friends in August 2015. Steaks were nicely done and you can taste and feel all ingredients used were super fresh
K. F.
OmG what an awesome place, with awesome staff and management and not to mention their food (and the hubby says don't forget the wine too), this place is worth licking the plates, it's that good!!!!, we look forward to coming back real soon and catching up with Craig and his wonderful staff, we felt so welcome and we also wanted to thank Mantra on Collins in recommending this place for dinner, best night ever!!! Kat & Russ Hunter
R. N.
Amazing service, fits us in very quickly, literally booked 10mins before showing up. Super friendly staff, very attentive! Food was amazing! Reasonable prices for a good steak house
b.
Amazing steaks at very good prices .. and incredible service .. a must go to if you like red meet 🍺
B. M.
Has been many years since I have been here, but was back here again last week, and got to say I'm glad it hasn't changed.
The steak is as good as ever!
Service is wonderful, and helped top off a great night.
Personally I didn't think much of the salad buffet, but hey thats just me, and certainly does not take any points away from this venue.
I had the 500 gram eye fillet (not on menu but waitress suggested it), with the carpetbag option and it was simply amazing.
Regardless if you are a local or if you are a tourist, if you love your steak (and they do other meats as well) then you will love this place.
K. Z.
Amazing, the steaks grilled with charcoal are awesome. Beef is smooth and bouncy. Worth it!
D. C.
Absolutely brilliant food and service, made two dinner reservations over a four night stay in Hobart!
Thanks guys!
T. Y. G.
Good food, seafood very fresh. Oysters are great. Salad bar available with fresh veg and pasta options.
P. A.
Very nice steak, however the noise in the conservatory area at the back of the restaurant was very very loud and my phone was registering 88 decibels for a lot of the meal. See if you can sit in the main (heritage) part of the restaurant, because that seemed to be much quieter.
For selection of steak and you can go from a "normal" price rump steak up to some decent aged steaks. Reasonable prices too.
E. F.
Amazing if you love charcoal grilled meats 🤤 the staff are so lovely also !
S. M.
Lovely meal, great service . Meals aren't huge (win for me) so fitted desert in also
O. ..
Top service & food , menu is priced well. Recommended steak restaurant in Hobart area.
D. W.
Fantastic, one of the best steaks I’ve ever had! The staff were lovely and the food is great and very reasonably priced hubby ordered a tomahawk steak (which is for sharing, he didn’t lol) it was $80! That’s so cheap and delicious
L. T.
Best steak in Hobart! Charred perfectly for a smokey taste, just the way I like it.
L. N.
Masters of the grill. My husband can never get a blue steak done perfectly, but these guys nailed it. Best lamb rack I've ever eaten.
B. M.
Great Australian steak house in Salamanca Place. It even has a salad bar if you order a main. Freindly staff and nice environment. A little pricey but worth it for the great steak.
U. T.
Huge variety of steaks and sizes cooked to perfection, top friendly service.
J.
Not the greatest steak I've had. Asked for no sauce but got a huge thing of garlic butter on top of the steak that destroyed the flavour. Staff were great. Food was quite quick.
6. 0.
Great friendly service. Had the 300g eye filet and was satisfied.
P. S.
Absolutely top notch food
T. D.
Lovely place.Probably heritage listed as it looks like a special cultural site. The food was delicious as well.
W. H.
Best place in Hobart for steak. Aged porterhouse was fantastic.
p. l. w.
Best eye fillet I've ever had. Great service ( Jeremy ) to answer any questions to help with your choice. Reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this place.
Y. L.
The steak was perfect in the cooking way and flavor. We ordered medium, and it was been properly served as medium. But the beef brisket was a little dry. It would be better if it could be tender.
T.
Great charcoal grilled meat, comes with self served salad bar. Very popular with tourists and conveniently located in Salamanca.
H. G.
Unbelievable steak, but every dish we ordered was fantastic. Very attentive service as well, strong recommend.
C. B.
An iconic Tasmanian restaurant well worth a visit, and very popular with locals as well. Great food, friendly staff, wide range of wines, reasonably priced. Highly recommend it
G. G.
Grilled meat and seafood are great. Salad bar and deserts are ok but not great. Service is a bit slow.
B. H.
Food was great accompanied with a great variety of salads, and staff was very friendly
c. s.
Great atmosphere!
Excellent service from all the friendly staff and the food was amazing.
Our waiter Jamie made sure we were happy throughout the entire night and did an outstanding job at making us feel welcome.
Highly recommend!
B. R.
Impeccable service & nice setting. The steaks are cooked to perfection & paired with delicious sides. Definitely in the top 5 steaks I've had. Would highly recommend to any meat lover!
P. E.
Service was a bit slow but the meals were amazing. Definately be coming back!
J. C.
Amazing!!the steak sauce, I have ever had. Their dessert is delicious!!
F. L.
Very good place. I loved their sticky date w/ scotch butter....
L. L.
Great service but food wasn't up to expectation. Could be better for the price that you are paying.
K. F.
We booked a table for 6.45pm and was told they needed the table back by 8pm which was fine, we ordered our meal at 7pm and waited and hour for it to arrive. After finishing our meal we were pushed out the door with no chance for dessert. 3 stars only because the food was delicious.
K. J.
Friendly staff, good food. Look out for yummy special 'once only' dishes.
J. P.
Good food and atmosphere in a classic heritage building with a generally older (40's and up) crowd. Worth a visit or two
W. L.
huge servings of tasty food. better not to order too much!
L. P.
I booked via email, it was so easy and Craig was very helpful and prompt with his responses.
The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. The food came out quite quickly too.
It was a belated birthday dinner for me and we had a brilliant time. I had a rib eye and it was cooked exactly how I wanted it (medium/rare), while my partner had the special 7 grade Wagyu porterhouse (rare). Talk about steak envy! Lucky for me my partner was willing to share, it was the best steak I've ever tasted. My rib eye was great but wow, the waygu was out of this world.
I had the forestiere (mushroom) sauce and it was delicious (I want the recipe!) and my partner's thyme and red currant sauce was just as good.
Both meals came with potatoes, pickled cabbage and green beans and carrots wrapped in bacon, which isn't written on the menu. We also had a yummy cauliflower gratin. Portion size was perfect, although I did have quite a big rib eye, I definitely needed to walk it off afterwards!
The only negative would be the starter, which was sour dough bread with garlic butter. It was delicious but a bit overpriced at $6 for two small pieces of bread. Surprising, considering how well priced everything else is.
Otherwise, it was a great night. If you're looking for a great steak, this is definitely the place to go.
G. W.
Good food, good staff.
A bit noisy for me but that just means that everyone are having a good time.
M. G.
The best part of this restaurant is their ambient atmosphere and welcoming staffs. They have such great professionals, they make you feel special. Highly recommended.
A. R.
Dined at this venue tonight along with many other times. I’m from interstate but always have the Ball and Chain on the ‘to do list’ (grew up in this state and visited this restaurant many times as a child when they sang convict songs). I just read a review saying the decor is outdated! For goodness sake it’s depicting the convict heritage. I hope it’s outdated!
We received wonderful service and the food....even better! Perfectly cooked steak and chargrilled prawns that I will remember for a long time. Best of all, a discussion with a long timer about their journey through Covid. And he couldn’t have been happier to make our visit as perfect as it could be 💓
D. S.
This is one of the best restaurants I have eaten in 40 years. The oysters Kilpatrick are to die for. Actually went back two nights in a row and had the beef cheeks on both nights that's how amazing they were. The service is amazing also, if you are ever in Hobart this is a must place to go but make sure you have a booking

Been here three times across a 25 year period and it just gets better every time. I love that the staff actually enjoy working there and the food is just to die for.
M. K.
Salad bar pretty depressing but great meat. Over priced. I didn't have the piece of cow on the photo...I had rump.
C. H.
Never been disappointed, love the ambience, staff always friendly and knowledgeable, nice oldy worldy surroundings.
S. S.
Great food, lovely service, easy location and easy access for mobility impaired. Menu has a good range and the steak cooked on the grill with the old iron is delicious!
D. B.
Undoubtedly the best meal of Beef cheek and Lamb shanks we have ever had. Just delicious. Friendly staff and accommodating manager Thankyou for fitting us in.
G. S.
We were given a coin worth 100 dollars last Christmas for Ball and Chain, only recently been able to use it, had to eat fairly early, 6 pm I think. On entry the restaurant looked lovely, liked the look of the wooden booths within, unfortunately we were not allocated one of these, instead we were guided to a glass house type room with a cafeteria type vibe where were were seated with couples with children, not particularly condusive to a quiet peaceful dinner sadly. Despite this.....the food was very good and the service was also very prompt.
L. T.
The service was amazing, especially kristy, she was very helpful and lovely to us. We enjoyed the garlic bread but the meals were rather small which was fine as we had entree, main and dessert but overall it was quite nice.
S. L.
Beef Cheek was fantastic. Good friendly service and good value for money.
E. K.
Staff were very friendly. Decor old school. Would have been nice to sit in the conservatory but unfortunately there was an issue with the grease trap which staff were very apologetic about. Food was ok but did not meant the expectations we had. Nothing spectacular about it.

Best charcoal grilled steak in town
j. t.
Good quality steaks, salad bar was fresh. Cosy ambience.
B. F.
Great friendly service, amazing food and good atmosphere. Will definitely go there again
W. F.
Large rump steak with free salad bar. Cooked perfectly, amazing value. It does taste better from the charcoal grill, and they use high quality steaks, judging by the taste. Still thinking how good it was a day later. They also have a good choice of beers and wines available.
N. C.
I can't fault the food or the atmosphere. The building is beautiful, the steak cooked to perfection and pepper sauce was excellent. I also liked the self service salad bar and being able to watch my steak on the grill. My only complaint is that while it wasn't too busy, the wait staff seemed flustered, on one occasion walking away in the middle of taking our order because a buzzer told them somebody else's food was ready...
J. S.
Still same old, salad is not as nice as 10 years ago.
C. M.
Great food, atmosphere, best salmon Eva! I recommend you finish off on the peanut butter ice cream dessert!
T. C.
Pretty nice little place. All the staff were just amazing, so friendly and welcoming. Food was really nice. I had the seafood chowder which was a highlight. The salad bar was a really nice touch, haven’t really come across many of them. Both the mains were cooked really well. Overall pretty good restaurant!
N. S.
Great meal at the Ball & Chain Grill. Steaks cooked well, really great friendly staff member who served us made the difference. Restaurant itself has stood still in time. A boat shaped salad bar, reminds me a bit of Sizzler, however, salads fresh and no kids dirty hands all in it! You can watch the steaks being cooked on the grill.
S. B.
An unpretentious grill house with great steaks! Good quality food, good quality produce cooked very well, and at a reasonable price. Diverse menu with plenty of other things to have you if you're not in the mood for steak. Waitstaff are very nice and friendly too. Atmosphere is family oriented.
S. C.
Good and fresh quality of meat. Woman grill chef is perfectly grilled what we ordered. But one day when I've been there, other chef grilled then burnt so I told them it's not good grill today compare before(I wasn't angry). Staff just excused it's grill shape. They should tell the truth. I know it's burnt or shape. I don't want to change, any refund or anything. Staff need more professional work for customer not only excuse.
C. P.
Excellent food, good portion sizes without being over the top. Service was excellent and friendly. It was my daughters 21st birthday and they gave her a little cake with a candle. Above and beyond expected. Thank you. 🤩
D. M.
Wagyu steak was amazing. Staff always excellent. BYO my favourite red wines......makes for perfect meal in Hobart Town.
d. d.
Possibly the best steak house in Australia.
Meals are charcoal cooked, no gas or electric gridles here.
Steak is cooked exactly to your liking (rare, medium rare, etc, etc) every time!!
Smallish salad bar but i really enjoyed the diverse offering here.
Great customer service. Very professional, helpful and courteous staff.
Fantastic wine selection and recommendations to suit every meal.
All situated in a beautiful, historical, convict built building with a great atmosphere.
Not cheap, but not that expensive either i guess and i am happy to pay for such quality food.
I love dining here.
J. T.
Be warned that the quail is not filling. It needs a side or appetizer to accompany it, which is too bad because the quail is not cheap ($14 for half a quail). The scotch steak was fine but the beer was flat. It was replaced with a tasty Hefeweizen. The raspberry pear cider was also tasty. The service was friendly and the seating in the back/outdoor area was lovely.
D. S.
As expected the meals were great and all were cooked to perfection. The real stand out on the night was the waiting staff, they were very attentive and provided outstanding service. After a very poor experience at a nearby steak house franchise the night before, this made up for it. From now on the Ball & Chain have will have our patronage every time we visit the south of the state.
M. J.
Had a wonderful 80th birthday celebration with family and friends from around the world. The food was excellent. The steaks were cooked to perfection. The service and friendliness of all the staff was exceptional, especially Luke who looked after us. They made a lovely birthday cake all decorated with strawberries and candles and gave us an evening to remember. Will definitely be back next time in Tasmania.
K. K.
I came here with friends on the evening we finished hiking the overland track. We had been eating dehydrated and packet food for the previous 10 days and were looking forward to a freshly cooked meal. We were not disappointed. 10 out of 11 of us got the steak, I went solo and had the salmon. Everything was cooked perfectly, the sauces were yummy and the salad bar was a hit. The atmosphere was excellent and service great.
A. S.
Good food, like stepping back in time. Ok
B. R.
Food tasted good but small portions for me with a hefty price tag. Ordered the beef cheeks and came with just a smear of sweet potato when I was expecting a generous serving like most places give. Once again, tasted really good so maybe lifting the serving size of the cheapest part of the meal might be a good idea. So if you’re a big eater this probably isn’t the place for you.
D. M.
This is the place to go if you want a steak. They use charcoal for cooking and have a decent salad bar and range of sides as well. Service is good but it's best to make reservations, it gets quite busy some nights. They're pretty good about getting your steak cooked the way you like it but I have had one under done before.
B. R.
The place I look most forward to visiting when I’m in Tasmania. Best steaks I’ve ever had, consistently perfect everytime. The service is extremely friendly (common trend in Tassie) Always a busy, warm atmosphere which suits the beautiful setting. The seafood chowder is the ideal entree with a juicy steak to follow as the main. Doesn’t matter which cut I try, they’re always perfectly cooked and full of flavour.
If I lived in Hobart, I think I’d be there every week.
N. C.
Busy, noisy, good service. I had slow cooked brisket which was very good. Friend had a steak (don't know what cut) but a third of it was fat.another friend had the ribs and wings, which looked really good
Would go back again as not disappointed by the place
J. C.
Menu not clear online, pick your steak and help yourself to the salad bar. Good selection of salads and fantastic steak, medium rare is actually medium rare. Charcoal otter can put some off, that’s the nature of an open grill. Love it!
A. E.
Totally delicious steaks. Great older world ambience. The eye fillet I had there was the best steak I've ever had. Friendly staff too. Great place for a meal with the family.
M. A. T.
To tell you the truth, we were hesitant about Ball & Chain due to the consistently inconsistent reviews of the service and food. But we went anyway preparing for the worst and expecting nothing. Apparently reservations are only for group bookings so we walked in and the restaurant was already swarmed with customers waiting at the bar. We waited about 15 mins but it’s not a big deal. Because we got to see the kitchen staff at work (right in front of the bar) and all of the organized chaos happening right in front of us. Once we were seated, we were attended to attentively. The restaurant, we noticed, had a diverse ethnic group of waiters and waitresses. I mentioned this because there had been negative reviews towards preferential treatment of certain groups of customers so I am not sure if that played a role? Like I said, we went in preparing for the worst due to similar bad reviews. We just really wanted to experience eating charcoal grilled steaks. And we were lucky it was a good night of a positive experience. Everything went smoothly. The food served was amazing, truly it was. The service was just as great. The waitress who was attending to us was sweet and polite. So overall, on a Friday night, it had been fantastic. I’m not sure if it’s one of those things where it’s a hit or miss when food and service that great in a restaurant should be consistent with all customers. It’s a big hit for us so I sincerely hope it would be just as a hit for the rest of you too. :)
B. P.
Consistently good.
The Ball & Chain Grill has been operating at the same place in Salamanca for many years. It is consistently good.
Staff are friendly, helpful, and there when needed.
The food, usually steak for us, arrived in reasonable time, and is always tender.
Recommended.
r. c.
Excellent service, Beautiful presentation and the meals are perfect. The entrance of the Restaurant doesnt tell you much but as you go in its full of surprises. A very good experience.
D. N.
Had a nice dinner with pork belly and rump steak.
The pork belly is really good. The rump steak, rare, is a bit tough. The salad bar is reasonable. Staff is really friendly and ready to offer advice.
Thanks for a nice evening for my family
T. C.
Had a large steak. Was cooked perfectly.
No salad bar was a strange but quite an enjoyable change. With the meal being completed on the plate.
K. S.
A lovely little restaurant just off Salamanca Place in Hobart. We were in Hobart for a series of meetings and this was the best restaurant we ate at whilst we were down there. The steaks were done to perfection and the side orders of vegetables and chips with just as good. A lovely selection of Wines and Beers available which we did consume a few.
A. C.
Great food and service, always.
T. L.
The steak was cooked as requested and had a delicious flavour on its own. Being anle to choose the size of steak was a nice feature. I had the peppercorn sauce which had a nice kick and was balanced beautifully. Im not a fan of self-serve salad bars, but the fact it was included and not extra was a nice surprise. The staff were friendly and didnt make me feel like I was taking up space as a solo diner.
R. M.
First the staffs are best
Then the food was soooo good
c. n.
Cozy, very friendly staff and good food!
S. H.
Great place for a very nice steak perfectly cooked to my liking. Had good selection of red wine and friendly staff.
R. M.
Great steak and engaged staff. Found was flavoursome and would go back.
E. L.
Wonderful dinner for six, scored the private dining room which was perfect for a long overdue catch up with old friends. Great food and wine, reasonable prices and attentive, good natured staff. Jing was a great waiter, and we shared some laughs 😊 Thanks.
M. W.
We tried the croquettes and the beef cheeks and both were just incredibly fantastic. If you are in Hobart this place is a must.
W. T.
Good steakhouse with reasonable price 👍
M. W.
The first and last word in steak for Hobart. Friendly staff and great service along with good wine and melt in your mouth steak.
J. B.
Nice place for a meal. All our steaks were cooked to perfection.
Salad bar is ok, would be nice to have a few different options on the salad bar that’s why I deducted one star.
Service was great and the staff were friendly.
Z. T.
Delicious steak and great staff who were friendly and fun. Would recommend for any protein needs.
L. R.
Excellent service, were able to accommodate for our larger dinner group than what we had booked for. Food was great and staff were super friendly
J. C.
I took the ribs and wings main menu and ooooh god I don't regret it! The ribs were super soft and tender, you have to taste this! And try all the sauces! 🤤
L. C.
The steak was like butter. Melted in my mouth. Great service. Great atmosphere. Loved it!
N. D.
An amazing place for eating whether your with family, friends, partners or workmates. Food is phenomenal. Being Scottish I went for the malt whisky selection and had Tellyers which is a Tasmanian whisky - lovely. Steaks are brilliant as is the amazing service.
L. S.
A bit cosy but tasty food!!!
It is worthy!
R. W.
Great food and pleasant atmosphere.
M. S.
Absolutely amazing! Steak was one of the best steaks ive ever had, perfectly cooked, sides were perfect taste despite size, great wine advice by our waiter. Great ambiance.
One of the best dining experiences ive ever had.
J. L.
I've been there three times during business trip. Reasonable price and good taste.
V. K.
Amazing steak a must to try when in Hobart
D. D.
Great pub in a lovely old building in Salamanca. Delicious fresh food, steaks cooked "just right", full of flavour and very tender. Definitely be going back. No need to book (for groups less than 5).
R. s.
Read the reviews and decided to give it a try, not sure what the people who gave it bad reviews were smoking as everything was amazing, couldn't finish our meals as there was a lot of food, atmospherewas lovely and servicewas on point. Definitely going back.
B. R.
The food was so tasty and the service went beyond what would be expected as they made a real effort to cater to my dairy/gluten free diet. I'd love to eat here again.
A. T.
Really pleasing. Great affordable food with a massive wine list. friendly staff. Love the smell of the chargrill wafting into the street.
D. T.
Unexpected Personal Service! Chef Saja reopened his kitchen at 10pm just for me. Wow! How greatful I was! Waiter Jing and waitress Kristy was so hospitable and I was the only guess in the restaurant. This is one dining experience I will never forget. Highly recommended and the food was excellent! I don't think I can go anywhere else! Keep up the excellent work! Best Regards, Des
S. C.
Great wines by the glass, steak delicious, white fish entre YUM, decor comfortable yet mismatched to service (which was also great). Would return.
*the salad bar isn't wonderful- needs to go or more effort for the slightly above average price of meals
*meals needed seasoning
J.
Everyone bangs on about the food in Tassie. TBH, I found it pretty average. We stayed 10 days and the only good feed we had was at the B and C. It was our last night too, so I was pretty chuffed with the Brisket and the salad bar. The chips were nice too.
M. S.
Ribs and steak were amazing. Staff were also great, but get rid of the salad bar. It's tacky, out-dated and spreads disease. I had runny-bums the next day.
R. L.
Had the dry aged rib eye, it was was amazing, service was awesome. All in all a great dining experience.
J. C.
Wonderful steak, alright service. There aren't any kid meals but you can choose the size of your meal (small, medium, large). Staff seemed a little disorganised and confused when organising the seating arrangements. The waiters don't write down what you order and instead memorise it but my waiter struggled to recite it back so I'm not sure memorising it is a good idea, especially when it takes about 20 minutes to cook the food. It's good to impress but I'd prefer not taking a chance in getting the wrong food served. But everything else was good! Very nice atmosphere.
T. W.
We wanted a good steak dinner whilst in Hobart and it was delivered, cooked to perfection, huger in portion and we ate it all. The staff were fabulous, attentive and friendly we will come back when in town again.
D. T.
Friendly service, all the meat on the grill tasted great, unfortunately missing some good sauces for the steaks etc. The potatoes tasted terrible, nice little place, with more popular sauces, better potatoes, slightly better salads would make this place excellent. The rest is already there, keep it up
O. G.
We always visit every time we’re in Hobart. Steaks are cooked to perfection, open salad bar, and the prices for Wine by the bottle are very reasonable. Love this place.
L.
My partner and I went here for dinner and weren't disappointed. We were greeted on entery by friendly staff and seated straight away. We ordered the chicken pate and quail for entree, the pate was amazing and the quail was great! For mains we had lamb rack and a 300g filet steak and they were both cooked to prefection. We also liked the all you can eat salad with our meals. Whenever we are in Hobart from now this will be one of our palaces to go. We wanted to try the creme brulee but were too full... might go back today and try it.
M. H.
Eaten here on a number of occasions and the steaks are always excellent. Peppered steak is a winner.
If you like your steak, this is the place to go
#update : 4yrs later and still the best steaks in Hobart
S. E.
very good! great customer service, lamb shank absolutely melts in your mouth, enough to make me move back to tassie!
K. F.
Great meals and service. You really do get what you pay for. Quality steak menu as well as others.
N. H.
Best steak I've ever had!
r. G.
After waiting for about an hour the mains finally came. The steak was really well cooked but the pepper sauce was sooo hot I had trouble eating it and the experience was not enjoyable. A little less peppercorns would be much appreciated, that's for sure! The salads were nice but yes, a little updating would be nice. I thought it was someone playing a joke that the steak sauce was so totally hot and that our water jugs were not refilled the whole time we were there! Lift your game if you're going to charge so much! Unbelievable!
S. A.
Absolutely amazing venue. Food was incredible. Staff were wonderful! So friendly and chatty. Steaks cooked to perfection. Nice vegetarian options too!
L. M.
Great service and food was superb
J. D.
Staff were very friendly. Wasn't hard to get their attention at all.
Food was great, loved the salad bar and the steak was excellent. Cooked very well and a beautiful, smoky flavour.
M. L.
Best food in Hobart. Excellent service, stuff was welcoming and professional. Seafood chowder was perfect. Salad bar was nice option.
S. G.
Happened accross for a late solo lunch .. tried the Ball and Chain meat platter.. superb value for money
Efficient, helpful, food delicious
So good took hubby back for dinner that night
All staff courteous and knowledgeable. Attentive without being intrusive or distant... can see why they won venue of the year award for 2018
Highly recommend
d. m.
Out of all the places my girlfriend and i ate at, this one was by far our favourite. Wow what exceptional service by the friendly staff, and amazing grilled pepper steak, cooked to perfection. The feed here made my night, very fullsome and unbelievable choice of cuts of meat. Well done ball and chain
P. P. C.
Wow the ribs were deluxe. Service was helpful and happy. Thanks 4 a great dinner.
T. A.
Casual steakhouse and good value for money. The wine was also fairly priced. Amazing steak I had and would recommend to others if they are looking for meat.
K.
We were a little disappointed with this place. We had to return the steak as it was cooked well but stone cold. They ended up replacing it. All the other meals were fine but it wasn't as great as we expected it. Maybe we just had high expectations after reading the other reviews?
s. k.
Amazing place. Loved the food and the service was so genuine especially from a gentleman named Craig. First time in Tasmania and showed us how to get to destination quickly on the way back to Launceston. 10/10
I. L.
A Tasmanian classic. Awesome dining space, super friendly and helpful staff, ridiculously extensive wine list, and an all-you-can eat salad bar. Oh and of course, the steaks are great too :)
S. P.
Awesome food! Great experience, great staff
D. H.
Decent steak but customer service was so so. We were continuily ignore by wait staff as they attended to the two large tables of Chinese patrons seated nearby. Our dollar is worth the same so not sure why we were getting ignored.
T. M.
You can't beat meat cooked over coals, the use of a good salad bar that is included in the price of the steak appeals to me as its often restricting to order salad from.the menu because of food allergies.
P. G.
Fantastic service and amazing food. I am not a seafood fan but if you love your beef and lamb this is the best place to go in Hobart. Service upstairs was top notch and bar service was fantastic.
J. D.
Had a really good experience here. Love the atmosphere and friendly service. And the food was cook perfectly.
T. P.
Not "cheap' but reasonable value with a help yourself salad bar. Great flame grilled steaks, but this time I tried the goose which was nice. They also do good duck. Need to book as it's popular and has two sittings.
Z. H.
Great food and amazing service! Could not fault it - would definitely recommend. Helped us out when my dad lost his glasses - above and beyond what most staff would do. Thank you :-)
C. P.
I've been here on a number of occasions and on a bad night you get an excellent steak. On a good night (and with their pepper sauce) you get something that cannot be easily described.
One word of warning though - I'm now very, very cautious about ordering a steak in any other establishment (no matter what the quality) because it's just going to disappoint me now.
N.
Fabulous venue, great ambiance, excellent service. Comprehensive wine list and the food cooked to perfection. The sauce with the salt and pepper squid was absolutely delicious great balance of flavours... simply delicious.
D. A.
Nice food, good service and reasonably priced. We ordered eye fillets and meat platter and they both tasted nice!
The ambience could be a bit better!
H. F.
Great steak, loved the moo brew, don't know what the chips were cooked in but wow and top service. Will definitely be back next time in Hobart.
D. F.
Excellent food, especially when work pays. Steak was delicious, salad bar had a nice selection, servers were attentive and lovely atmosphere.
S. 1.
The perfect steak it was amazing.
K. G.
Discovered this little gem on this trip to Hobart. Best find ever!!! Steak is the best I've eaten, and the sticky date is to die for. 2 nights in a row now , might be back tomorrow. ❤❤❤ service is 110%.
G. C.
Good steak (got the ribeye - medium rare) and decent salad bar(although I'd prefer it just served on the plate with the steak) but $2.90 extra for sauce on a $39.90 steak?? Seriously?? That's BS.
Quail entree was mediocre too.
Service pretty good although a bit bumbley.
P.
I didn't mind it, it's not pretentious. When they say well done they really mean it. Next time I'll get medium well.
It has a salad bar and the service was pretty good.
Worst part of the experience was my girlfriend, not the restaurant.
M. P.
The meat and Tasmania fish were so nice. Staff are nice and have service mind. Really love and appreciate that :) Recommend to be here when you visit Tasmania.
J. K. (.
When compared to all the fine dining of Hobart and Tasmania that we dined at Ball & Chain Grill faired lower down the scale. Mostly this was due to it serving more traditional food and not embracing culinary gastronomy. This is OK – eating in a 187yr old venue was impressive and serving more modern fare would have clashed. I will always remember Ball & Chain as the first place I discovered oyster pigs in a blanket and for an epic eye fillet cooked on a charcoal grill to buttery blissful perfection.
Full review is up now on Spooning Australia.
S. J.
Been here a few times. Wonderful service and food was amazing. Just don't forget the salad bar when you order your mains. Such a nice little touch.
J. T.
Seafood soup was great, very creamy and rich.
Oyster is also fresh!
Beware of portion size (steak) may not be enough to fill you.
N. W.
Top service, mouth watering food and a calming atmosphere. With top quality ingredients, the food is exactly what you pay for. For a night to celebrate it to have a great night out, I recommend this place with gusto.
V. F.
My favourite steak house in Australia. Food is amazing, staff are always pleasant. I squeeze in at least one visit each time I'm in Hobart.
J. C.
We were reccomended the Ball and Chain by friends. We had dinner there on Monday 07/01/13 - We're both quite particular with steak and generally will only go to tried and tested places to avoid dissapointment. We both were sat immediately and ordered eye fillet steaks. The steaks came out promptly as did our wine, and we need not ask for our glasses of water to be refilled, as they were refilled at every oppotunity by the waitstaff. Both steaks were cooked to perfection and melt in your mouth juicy, smokey and tender. The steak here is so flavoursome you wouldn't require any sauce - I had mine on the side and it was delicous. The salad bar is great too and they have a good selection of fresh veges, salads and sides like rice and noodles.
We were so impressed that we went back on Thursday, our last night in Hobart, just to relive the experience. This time my partner had the large porterhouse and I stuck with the eye fillet. Both were again far and above expectations and rated as the best steaks we've ever had (not bad from the daughter of a butcher). Our waitress Laura left us wanting for nothing, and was more than happy to chat with us about our dessert (Peanut Butter Pie is a MUST)! And even brought more butterscotch sauce for my partners Sticky Date Pudding (Highly reccomended). All in all a fantastic experience. I urge anyone in Hobart to go there!
M. C.
Had the pleasure of having dinner here and would definitely visit again. Steak cooked to perfection, lovely staff, great atmosphere. Thank-you.
A. F.
Amazing steaks and salad bar! Especially for the comparatively good prices. Service was really good too. I've recommended the Ball & Chain Grill to my family and friends planning to visit Hobart.
J. W.
Friendly staff, great service, delicious food. Ribs and wings for him, Tassie salmon for me. Both recommended.
K. R.
Great food, friendly staff. Overall good experience. This is the 3rd visit for me. Salad bar is yum too.
When you come to Tas you must dine here. Highly recommended.
F. J.
It’s my 2nd day of steak marathon and I considered Ball And Chain Grill one of the contender for best steak house in Hobart. I simply loved the salad bar and choose from a variety of food and dressings.
S. R.
Had amazing food at Ball and Chain. Staff so friendly and efficient. Couldn't recommend it enough
E. D.
Excellent service, prompt serving of meal even with a large group(approx 30 people). Steak cooked as ordered. Well done to all staff.
s. g.
We order steak medium, it came burned from outside and not cooked from inside (rare) ...i Really don't know how did they do that .... it's point for them , they have there own cooking way ...
S. K.
I went there with friends and it's my first time back there since 1993 as I moved interstate. I was not disappointed as the porterhouse was sensational together with the sides. Highly recommended!!!
J. B.
Absolutely succulent steaks. None better in Tasmania from what we were told. Great atmosphere and awesome to watch the steaks being cooked right in the front door.
K. S.
Completely outdated decor, and could use a bit of a spruce up! This restaurant however has nice food (the steaks are great!) and a self-serve salad bar which was good- Just don't fill up on all the different salads before you get your main! Rookie error!
K. S.
Friendly atmosphere, value for money and DELICIOUS steak, A must if you love.
M. M.
Great little restaurant tucked away in an old convict cottage. Staff were best friendly anf polite and the food was great. The steak was cooked perfectly.
S. W.
Best steak ever! Friendly staff, salad bar. Can get busy but if you cook great food everone wants to come so expect a wait.
J. C.
This is a top place for steaks with some great appetiser options like cured trevalla and chicken liver pate. The salad bar is pretty average and after hitting 300g of steak its not necessary.
H. N.
Excellent service. Wasn't too pricy and my meat was cooked beautifully. Plus unlike other stingy places you get a salad bar included! Winning!
A. S.
Steak was nicely cooked (ordered rare) and the pepper sauce was delicious, however the salad bar was a bit lacking and the side consisted of only 3 potatoes.
m. f.
Best steak I've had in a long while!
A. G.
2nd time back and it did not disappoint. Service was fantastic and the oysters Kirkpatrick and speak were amazing
C. S.
The best steak anywhere. Ball and Chain is the place I go every time I visit Hobart. Never a bad meal. Service is great.
L. S.
Great atmosphere, and awesome food. Service was also lovely. Mid to upper-range prices depending on what you get, and a lovely veggie option in the lasagna.
D. M.
A very fine ribeye - cooked perfectly.
Good service from attentive staff.
A good salad bar.
This is a great place for a good old fashioned meal.
D. M.
Awesome as always, except disappointed this time that oysters were unavailable due to "the spawning season" but usually best oysters in AUS! Would always reccomend and will return on it next Tas trip
L. G.
My seafood chowder was lovely, my husband's steak was amazing but the chips were cold and soggy . Staff delightful..
C. S.
Really good steak, we sat at a table in the back. Very cute place.
R. S.
Excellent customer service. Oysters were fresh as fresh can be. Steak was moist & tender & perfectly cooked. A lovely dining experience.
G. 4.
This is my FAVORITE TASSIE restaurant.
Best steaks and salad on earth
xxx Old age feel... cozy.. romantic.. quaint.. professional friendly staff xx
D. W.
Well priced. Amazing food and great service. Very friendly staff and food was delivered to our table within 15 minutes of ordering! Beautiful historical building also
T. H.
Amazing Steaks, friendly and very efficient service, all-round great experience 👍
B. B.
Good steacks, perfectly cook. Pepper steack for the rump is the best. Eye filet was very tasty but the garlic butter wasn't good. The small buffet for starters was really nice too.
D. B.
Got the eye fillet, asked for medium rare and got medium rare! Fantastic cut of meat cooked perfectly and great recommendation to wine choice. Loved it.
L. H.
Do yourself a favour and have a steak here. We went there twice while we were on holidays and had the most amazing meals. Highly recommend for both food and service
J. M.
The steak was tender and juicy, the staff were amazing, such a fantastic date night with my man. Would recommend it to everyone.
z. H.
Best food experience in Hobart!
R. N.
We had an amazing experience here tonight - our food was cooked to perfection (thanks chef), the waitress was attentive but not overbearing (and arranged a little gift for us thank you (: ), our waiter was engaging and generous. All the other staff assigned to other tables seemed equally friendly. Thank you all for a great night out !!

Disappointed with not having a choice of veg or salad with my salmon... had to buy a salad... couldn't swap out... made my tiny piece of salmon very expensive.

I have been to the Ball and Chain twice. On the first occasion I went with my mother. She ordered the jamcian chicken and I ordered the chargrilled salmon. The salmon was beautifully cooked. It melted in your mouth. The accompaying sauce adds to the whole experience. My mothers chicken was cooked well and was juicey and tender. It wasn't too spicey.
The second occasion I went with my partner. I once again ordered the char grilled salmon. This time the piece was even bigger as well as perfectly cooked. My partner ordered a small eye fillet which he was very pleased with. It was cooked to his liking as requested and he ordered the BBQ sauce to go with it.
The salad bar, which is free when you order a main, is great value also. There is a lot to choose from. There are salads, coleslaw, vegetables, etc.
The staff were friendly and helpful which was a nice change.
The venue is quite packed and busy after 7 but all in all, each visit has been worth the money.

Excellent service by friendly and professional staff. Steaks were supurb and very good salad bar. I would happily come back next time I am in Hobart.
M. E.
Great service and outstanding meals. We weren't sure how to feel about the salad bar though. For a classy place it didn't quite fit in.

Good beef and salad, reasonable price

If you want a steak, go to a steak house. This is Hobarts #1 steak house. Couldn't fault my meal.
M. M.
Nice place with nice service, but mediorce food quality. Steaks were burned, what strongly impacted the taste of meat, potatos dry, sause just OK.
M. L.
Really yummy vegetarian option for a steak house and friendly staff :)
W. V.
Amazing food, great service , reasonable prices, and a wonderful easy going atmosphere .. richly sounds of drinking and happy eating, lots of people having a genuinely enjoyable meal and enjoying each other's company.

Is this restaurant serves halal food ?

If you want a break from the incredibly fresh seafood in Tasmania, Ball & Chain has multiple options for the carnivore. The tomahawk steak and the lamb rack was done perfectly!
S. F.
service was absolutely amazing and attentive although the food was ordinary. sauces were off putting, salad bar was basic and meat wasn’t that extraordinary.
E. P.
Service was the best. The Chef was a lovely man and the food was so fresh and tasty. Couldn’t of done more for our family
S. W.
Seafood platter ok, not as good as others close by. The salad bar isn't worth and extra $10. The steaks are good, family friendly which is great
L. S.
Bar and wait staff pleasant and very accommodating especially to The Coeliac in our group. Jin our waiter couldn't have been more helpful and the food was prompt and very tasty.
W. O.
The best steak house in Hobart and more than just steak. Staff excellent. It is a well oiled machine of efficiency.

Excellent steak and affordable
P. K.
Nice food with reasonable prices. The night we were there was a bit quieter and less busy so we could talk without problems. Had it been full it would have been noisy.
M. F.
Good food with decent portions, excellent selection of steaks and salad bar on main entertainment stretch of hobart. Definitely a recommended spot for dinner with groups
J. Z.
Steak took quite a while to get served. But it was very yummy when we finally got it. The salad bar was ok.

Had the sausage share plate and the Meat platter both of which were really good, salad bar was also excellent. Great service as well.
C. C.
It was extremely busy when we were there, but service was good. Let down by the somewhat disappointing range on the salad bar, and the size of the bowl of chips.
L. S.
Ribs and wings were phenomenal and I have it on good faith that the steak was to die for! Definitely somewhere I'll visit again
M. J. (.
Over priced for the amount of food you get. My duck was over cooked and dry. All i got on my plate with my half a duck a 4 small pieces of potato. They did have a self serve salad bar.
A. L.
Could have been better. Get rid of the sale bar and modernise your restaurant. Steak is amazing but it should be for the prices.
M. R.
Great steak, but dessert was a bit average but overall meal was great and service was amazing
R. C.
As always, a fantastic feed. Porterhouse was to die for and very impressed with the quality. Been coming here 20 years, and this is one of the major reasons we fly over.
R. C.
Great atmosphere, food was awesome, good size meals and prices were fair.

If you are looking for a hearty meal serving sizes think again as they are boadering fine dining sizes.Main serving sizes of the kebabs were small for what you would expect at a grill restaurant.
P. S.
Outstanding value and superb food

Really good variety! Don't miss the eye fillet, unbelievable.
K. P.
Steaks were ok. My mate found a bug in his wine and they didn't even offer him a complimentary drink....

We enjoyed a delicious meal at the Ball & Chain Grill (Steaks, kebabs, vego lasangna & the special beef burgundy) and we were served by the wonderful Kristy who provided us with outstanding service!!

Not the best. Nice steak. For some reason they put whole pepper corns on the steak. I didn't want that but my mouth burns now

Incredibly rude staff. Definitely don't ask to split the bill, and if you do, be prepared to add it all up yourself. Great meal though.
