Comments of Abacus Bar & Kitchen

Super speedy, lovely and friendly service. I just popped in to get an iced coffee as no other coffee place nearby was open and they got right on it! Love the ambience and the decor, will have to come by to try their food next time. Iced coffee with alternative milk for takeaway was $7.50 which I thought was reasonable for how good it was.

Excellent location and great venue. The staffs are so friendly! Very fancy brunch place. The food is yummy and tasty, served with a sophisticated touch: highly recommended! I will definitely come back again :)

Such a decent cafe and bar in South Yarra. Me and my friend have tried the seafood platter, along with potatoes and green beans for dinner. The seafood is so fresh especially pipis and prawns, they are my favourite.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I would give 10 stars out of 5 stars if I can!!
There is nothing I don’t like at this restaurant.
1. Number one customer service in Chapel street. I was very impressed with how their waitresses worked, those three waitresses today at lunchtime are amazing. They pay attention and care for customers. I feel like their services are very outstanding compared to other restaurants.
2. I love what I ordered today! (Avocado and pumpkin croquette. I feel it’s really delicious and well presented.
3. Environment and Ambiance is excellent. It’s good place to spend time with friends or your date.
I will definitely go back again!

The staff were super friendly and helpful. Our meals came out quickly. Loved the vibe with good music playing in the background. Everyone dressed immaculately. I had the beef cheek with black garlic and mash potato 😋. Next time I want to try their pasta that I heard is made in-house 😋.
D. Z.
Tried the seafood board and loved it! Cocktails were great too🍸 Also loved the timber, marble and tropical plants here. Staff were super lovely and helpful, will be back again!

The newest addition to menu is the Abacus Seashore Board! Overflowing with fresh local seafood such as oysters, scallops, king prawns, octopus, pipis and mussels, this is not to be missed. Bright and beautiful flavours, and the Chardonnay mignonette and garlic emulsion brings out the fresh taste of the seafood. Paired with Tivoli Road Bakery sourdough, and Roast Hasselback Potatoes, this is a feast to remember.
Also don't forget to check out the amazing cocktail selection, in particularly the Davidson Plum Tea. Tasty and a sight to behold. For something without alcohol, the house made Lemonade is a super invigorating drink!

Extraordinary cafe in chapel street. The sauces are unique in taste and colour. Their must try are lamb croquettes and Geelong lamb shoulder

📍: 383 Chapel St, South Yarra
📝: First visit to Abacus (not counting the thousand times I have walked pass 😆), the urban oasis in the buzzing heart of south yarra. Amazing interior, brightly lit with natural light from their windows. Give them a visit this summer to enjoy their new seasonal menu while it lasts!
❤️: The highlight of our meal was the 🌊 Abacus Seashore Board from their seasonal menu. The board consisted of freshly shucked 🦪 oysters, Hokkaido scallops, 🦐 Mooloolaba king prawns, 🐙 Port Lincoln octopus, 🐚 Goolwa pipis, Portarlington mussels served with chardonnay mignonette and garlic emulsion. All the produce are locally sourced, so come and support local together with Abacus next time you dine!

Beautiful presentation! Had the avocado & pumpkin (pumpkin croquettes, avocado, goats feta, black bean, charred corn, tomato, onion,
coriander, and a poached egg).
My partner had the hand-rolled nori linguine (fresh nori linguine, alphington mushrooms, wakame butter, avruga caviar! Fancyyyy)
Not super filling, but the ambiance of the place is modern, sleek, green, and gorgeous.
C. S.
Awesome seafood platter, everything was very fresh and tasty. Cocktails were very light and refreshing and the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating.
M. S.
Came in with my baby and toddler trying to navigate a double pram after a really difficult morning and was met with the best service and to our delight, one of the chefs came and brought my son a plate of fruit on dry ice and made his week! This chef is absolutely amazing! He remembered us a few days later and was so lovely to us and my little boy! Things like this are beyond words as a parent of 2 really young kids! Thank you
f. l.
Love my dinner at Abacus! seashore board is gorgeous, great vibe, and friendly staffs. Highly recommended
S. P.
Diligent staff and an interesting menu makes this a great place for a snack or lunch.
The lobster ceviche was fresh and tart. The miso eggplant and polenta needed a sauce and / or salad but flavour and texture was spot on. The crab trumpet was a feast for the eyes and tastebuds, with a lightly pickled daikon providing a crunchy contrast.

🥑 Avocado and Pumpkin Croquettes
🥣 Black Rice Porridge
Abacus do a great job, always with a creative and season menu that gives you a little more than just your standard breakfast or lunch options. The venue is stunning, very open and luxe. I love the little extra touches, like the flowers in your drinks. The porridge was unique and tasty! The croquettes were nice and I’m pretty sure you can order them on their own, the dish as a whole was pleasant and refreshing. The service could be more attentive, our dead plates were left on the table for so long after we had finished, and it wasn’t a busy morning. Will return some time to try their dinner menu.
t. b.
Great service, amazing staff. Oysters, scallop and lobster dishes amazing. Oh and the Hey smoke mash a must. Only miss Need a bit more cooking and more miso on the eggplant!
J. J.
excellent experience! I was surprised there is a BBQ bar at the back. Really yummy food and nice place for friends hangout. Would highly recommend.
L. Z.
Amazing seafood platter. The tiger prawns were fresh and well cooked. Highly recommend for a dinner with your loved ones.
L. L.
Very nice try of the bbq in Abacus Garden ! I am loving of the lamb and mashroom! Very juicy and chewable! Alcohol love must try the frozen Margaret! So summer !
a. n.
Possibly they were understaffed the night we went, had to wait too long for service and food.
Food was ok, bit overpriced for dinner menu.
Loved the brunch options though, def recommend for brunch and coffee. But minus one star for dinner service.
H. L.
Quick last minute trip to Melbourne last week. Brunch at @abacus_melbourne: very hip and trendy place with excellent food and drinks selection.
.
Torched hiramasa kingfish: with fermented bullhorn peppers, pickled almond. This dish was delicious! Super tasty kingfish with a great sauce. Very refreshing dish.
.
Smoked mozzarella and jalapeno croquettes: loved this one! Super gooey and savoury, and not spicy at all.
.
Grilled octopus, with fried egg, saltbush, potatoes: amazing octopus! Tender and full of flavours. Lots of different and yummy components to this dish!
.
Lemon myrtle iced tea: delicious iced tea. Just wish there was more!
N. J.
Beautifully presented food and interesting indoor atmosphere. Hubby’s meal was delightful although mine needed a bit of oomph. Portion sizes could be a bit more generous as well. If only there were salt and pepper shakers on the table!
D. F.
Both food and beverage are above amazing! Especially the fish, I love it !
S. L.
Great location and atmosphere. Staff are friendly, the food presentation is superb, and very tasty

- Update October 2021
Exceptional coffee once again! If I had to pick one place in Melbourne for coffee I would come here. Period!
- Update June 2021
Again I had one of the best cappuccinos in recent times from this place... Cannot recommend the coffee and food high enough!
- ORG Review
Simply THE BEST cappuccino I've had in Melbourne and I've been to almost every cafe worth visiting... The food looks and tastes good, the environment is extremely inviting, the staff are welcoming and it's one of those places where 5 stars are not enough! You have to try to experience the very nice environment, great food and drinks, pictures just don't do it justice...
L. G. G.
Excellent location and great venue. The food is great and tasty, served with a sophisticated touch: highly recommended and will come back again!
However, the coffee was terrible: it was well done and served but the blend itself was very disappointing... you don’t expect a disgusting coffee from such a lovely bar/kitchen!
M. H.
I had a wonderful experience with our waitress maria, she explained the menu. Was very attentive to our order and in addition she made sure we were okay. The venue was recommended by the manager. The cocktails were amazing :infused with native flavours. They seated us at a beautiful table
And gave us the best experience at abacus
A. G.
The oysters at Abacus are a must-try, really fresh and the presentation was really impressive.
Great spot for a drink on chapel street.
K. B.
Delicious food from an interesting menu with plenty of native ingredients. Well presented also. Disappointing issue was that having pre booked a table there was not one reserved for our party and the three of us were squeezed onto a table meant for two, not even a third chair or place setting when we were first shown to the table. Wouldn’t have minded so much if a family (2 adults and 2 small children) in front of us who had not booked were given a much bigger, and 2 others next to us were on a table for 4. A bit more care / forethought into table allocations would have made it a perfect lunch.

Im on holiday and decided to get breakfast at a nice looking cafe. The cafe's atmosphere is beautiful and the staff very polite but I was surprised when my food came out, I ordered poached eggs on toast and well I got two eggs I only got one piece of toast. This dish is $12 and looks so sad and bare, makes me regret coming here to be honest for food considering what Melbourne has to offer.
The coffee is good though so if you're going to this Cafe just get coffee and pick somewhere else for your food.
S. P.
Really great food! Both the steak and the cauliflower florets were incredible! Great Environment, and the music choice really creates an enjoyable atmosphere.
J. B.
Seafood picnic home platter was nice. Could have more flavours but overall very good.
a. g.
Nice coffee and delicious food, had the market fish with soup, wow , really delicious. Friendly staff, nice street view, some people sit with lab working there. Relax environment. Deserve visit
L. i.
Friendly staff, lovely environment, beautiful traditional chinese BBQ. A perfect place to catch up with friends.
E. #.
Fast service, excellent food in terms of taste and portion size and very friendly staff. The Free Range Eggs on toast was very nice.
N. S.
First time here on Anzac day, the place were packed, but took less than 5 minutes we get the table. The food was really good. Order the Blue crab and crispy pumpkin it's fantastic.
m. v.
Great food and environment to bring friends or conduct work meetings. Staff are also very friendly. Be sure to order some oysters as the way they are presented is very impressive. Would highly recommend.
R. B.
A perfect Mothers day breakfast... meals and coffees we're beautiful to look at and divine on the palate. Ambience and staff delightful and welcoming.
P. R.
Great ambience and service. Staff are friendly, food are presentable and healthy. The weather is awesome today and with their fully open bi fold door, we spent a great afternoon in this venue.
A. B.
Had the Blue Swimmer Crab Crumpets and they were amazing. And the service and vibe were great too.
B. E. C.
Friendly staff, extremely fast service and delicious food! I came here for brunch and would definitely be back to check out their dinner menu. Recommend to book in advance for brunch...
E. B.
The coffee was excellent. My wife had no complaints about her octopus (see photo) she liked it and would have it again. I had the thick cut bacon and beans with bread. It was well cooked (see photo) but I was not a fan. They do not have wifi which I like for Sunday mornings at least. Service was fast enough and friendly. Good looking venue and well attended. They had a DJ. Would I have Sunday brunch here again? At a pinch, yes, but probably not. The competition is intense.
A. W.
Loved the decor of the Cafe very industrial with the hard lines softened by the foliage that creeps up the wall. The menu was not quite what we were expecting but I ordered the avocado and pumpkin croquettes these were delicious, my partner ordered the poached eggs and bacon. Service was ok but at times they did make you feel like you were hindering them.
E. F.
great food, great staff, and great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend breakfast if you're in the South Yarra area.
V. N.
Love the interior and full length glasses! A great place for a nice breakfast. Unfortunately, I really want to love the avocado toast, but the beetroot sourdough was a tad too salty and tough. I had the plain sourdough the day before and it was great. Eden Mackerel is also very interesting but similarly quite salty.
Z. O.
Had nice delievery experience from this place! Fresh handmade pasta, tasty sauces and beautiful pastry & coffee ☕. Super easy to cook at home❤️ pricy but worth every penny.
I will be back again to try out the siganiture brunch, when it opens the door to public.
j.
Lovely atmospheric setting with high ceilings. Came in here on a sweltering hot day wanting some refreshing drinks. Most of the drinks menu is alcoholic however they do have a couple of fruit juice choices.
I would have liked a selection of mocktails/non alcoholic drink options considering it is such a nice setting to just sit and have a refreshing beverage during the day.

Launching out of the 2020 pandemic with a vengeance, this place has put together an all Australian degustation menu that is unmatched in both quality and creativity, with kangaroo and seaweed making the cut and cured king fish and octopus just to accent the options, Abacus in my mind has hit a level of Prahran Institution status - a must for a decadent night dining experience that really is the locale nightlife crown jewel.
If you in anyway doubting my enthusiasm, go and see what they are doing with the native Davidson plum !
C. a. V. (. &. V.
We had such an incredible experience here - the food is innovative and creative with a dash of playfulness that is a must-do foodie adventure in Melbourne. The service is outstanding, with a team of true professionals that clearly care about every single aspect of their craft. Tip: Try the Davidson Plum cocktail as much for the theatre as for the taste, and the Beef Tongue Croqueta… perfection!
H. K.
What a great find , beautiful interior and a wonderful menu offering an irresistible menu . I love tasting lots of things so I went for a few of the starters including the oysters, the chicken livers , the pan fried mushrooms 🍄 but the winning dish was the exotic doughnuts!
Y. L.
Have been there twice with friends, amazing experience! Simply delicious! Appreciated modern Australian authentic food! Drinks are specially made of the best selection of local wine (so many Gins from Australia!) impressive!
Backyard BBQ is a must try if you haven’t. Go after 5pm, have a tap beer and try wagyu bbq. Let them blow your mind completely. (it’s roasted by an Italian chef)
Enjoyed the atmosphere, the interior design and was impressed by the most friendly and cheerful staff!
Definitely a must go if you’re around South Yarra.

Abacus Bar & Kitchen
Pros:
👧Staff are professional, friendly & happy to help
🥘 Breakfast was delicious & cooked to perfection. There was a variety of options with something to suit all tastebuds. Quantities were large & filling. Try the croissants, they are fresh & cooked to perfection.
👶This is open child friendly environment, with room for strollers and kids to play around in.
💰 Prices are reasonable especially for the quantity and quality of food.
Cons:
🚘 Parking is a bit of a headache to find
☕️ The coffee is not the best or worst.
T. L.
While on the pricier side, the location and vibe of this restaurant is amazing! The staff are super helpful and attentive and the food was lovely. Will be back.
A. M. P.
I had my birthday party here, everything was amazing. The staff was great and the food was delicious. Great experience 👍
A.
Great atmosphere and service from our waitress was excellent (bubbly lady with short hair). Initally the man who greeted us seemed a bit cold and we were hesitant but our waitress really made up for it! We enjoyed the prawns, salmon roe oysters, mushroom fries and confit potatoes most. My partner enjoyed the pork and venison terrine but it was definitely not the highlight for me. For main we had the porterhouse which was cooked well and pork neck pasta, which we found a bit too fatty. Overall a pleasant experience and we will return!
A. S.
This place blew me away! The interior is a stunning love garden and it is just beautiful to sit in and enjoy breakfast, wine, lunch to what ever takes your fancy. The breakfast we had (ballarat bacon) was enormous and so filling I didn't eat till 6pm! The breakfast menu is filled with tasty and slightly non conventional dishes. Worth a visit! The staff were exceptionally lovely and really helpful with recommendations.
M. D.
Went for an early Christmas lunch. Despite hearing mixed reviews I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. Had both the kingfish ceviche and smashed avocado highly recommend both. Menu is a little expensive but then again the restaurant is located on Chapel St. Very cool and relaxed atmosphere, would certainly go again.
B. D.
Great atmosphere at this airy restaurant on chapel street. The reception is friendly and swift - the staff seated us at our table and talked us through the menu with enthusiasm and knowledge. We tried a couple of sharing dishes between 5 of us - this ranged from a slow cooked rib with tortilla to place it in and a very nicely grilled fish. The dishes were all quite good but were lacking a unique flavour that one would expect from a restaurant at this price. Well worth a visit if you’re wanting quite a local cuisine while visiting the chapel street precinct.
M. S.
I had a good time with my friends this morning here; however, I didn’t like the way its staff constantly were asking (pushing) us to order when lots of tables were free and no one was in a queue. Btw, we paid $16 for the surcharge, maybe because of how pushy the staff were, and I was not happy with that whatsoever.
M. E.
Very cool and trendy spot in South Yarra's busy Chapel Street.
We visited on a weekend, and they had a live DJ playing music.
A limited menu, but great brunch options which are a little bit different to what you would normally find on a Melbourne brunch menu.
Would recommend the croquettes, but not the pork burger as it was a little bland. Great coffee and very friendly staff.
Put this one on your list of brunch spots to try.
P. E.
I got drawn into this cafe after seeing this being so packed on a weekday. The decor was beautiful! I waited to be seated but one of the waitress breezed straight past me without even a glance. Thankfully barely 30 secs later someone else spotted me and got me seated though.
I ordered a chai latte to start and it was deliciously warming and freshly brewed.
I ordered a octopus with chorizo and bread. The plating was beautiful, but to be honest, not very practical. The huge chunks of bread that was dramatically placed like boulders was so hard to cut. The flavours was awesome though and the octopus was oh-so-tender.
I just hope they can balance aesthetic with a bit of pragmatism in the future ❤️
E. K.
Came in around 2 30 pm yesterday not realizing that the brunch menu have finished. Ordered a pork belly pizza to share between two. Pizza was pretty good and crackling pieces on it are so crunchy! Great decor with high ceilings.

such a lovely interior with friendly staff. have been here for dinner a few times as well and had a great time, but definitely better for brunch. their menu changes each season which keeps the place fresh, and i ordered the victorian mushrooms. would love to see a few more vegan options but this place is tough to fault. highly recommend if you're in the area!
A. P.
Beautiful space, wonderful people & delicious food. Always feels like home.
N. J.
Nothing to write home about. Honestly! The salmon turned out to be a great disappointment but the Pulled Pork was good. Order the carrots to share as these are very very good. Moderately priced and friendly staff - even though they interrupt you as soon as you take the first bite to ask how the food is! Let me taste it first please.
M. S.
Great breakfast. The avocado&pumpkin dish was perfect. The sandwich was delicious as well! Best coffee we had so far in Melbourne.
What I didn't like was the freshly squeezed orange juice full of ice. Even on a cold and windy day they leave the window open. The cold breeze from outside was not pleasant.
Will definitely come back.
A. K.
Scrambled eggs were dry when I specifically ordered for not well done. But the waitress was nice and didn’t charge me for it.
Steak was chewy like rubber.
The place is good, good music but the food was disappointing.
And water glass had lipstick on it.
The place is good just for a cup of coffee.
J.
Great spot! 10/10 service, the staff were so helpful and friendly. Food and drinks were awesome 👌🏻
T. C.
A very stylish restaurant and you will be easily attracted even it sits on Chapels street where heaps of wonderful cafes are around. Food and service won’t let you down as well. My friend from Brisbane will be visiting Melbourne soon. She asked me where I would recommend to have brunch in Mel. I recommended Abacus to her. Simply because their iced chocolate was so good and it killed me.
C. M.
Overall experience was pretty good but a bit over priced. We started with coffees and two "freshly squeezed juices" - these were definitely not and lacked flavour because of this. I ordered the avocado and pumpkin and my partner ordered the smashed avocado. Mine was lovely but he mentioned his lacked a bit of flavour. Really nicely decorated space and great place to people watch.
M. H.
Great modern venue for breakfast lunch or late lunch. Right next door to the Prahran markets and located on hip Chapel Street. Everything you order will surprise you in terms of the effort put into the dish. The coffee is good but nothing to rave about. You go here for the food and the cocktails.
R.
Always wanted to go here, finally made the trip down, such a spacious place even when it's bustling with people. Great ambience with the greenery and the classical jazz playing in the background made it livin up even more. I had a chai latte with almond milk, was served very nicely and I had the avocado and pumpkin dish - was so delicious, also added an extra egg. Service was great, lovely staff. Would come back to try some other dishes on the menu!
A. B.
Nice setting and good vibe, and the bar is a bonus. The food is great, though portions are small.
G. C.
I had the mackerel & anchovies and it did not disappoint. Delicious. I'd order again in a heartbeat. Didn't end up having a coffee, but my wife thoroughly enjoyed hers. I had a fresh blood orange juice and it was also delicious. Wait staff were also pleasant, and in general, this is a pretty nice cafe.
C. C.
Finally out of lockdown we were able to visit Abacus Bar & Kitchen on Chapel Street.
Despite the limited seating capacity we were able to get a table outside, and the updated menu exceeded expectation.
The two mains chosen were lamb and linguini with mushrooms and caviar. They were both amazing, in quality, taste and cooking to perfection, compliment to the chef and the team.
To end the night, an excellent peanut parfait for dessert.
Thank you for a great out of lockdown experience
M. H.
Great food, great staff. I think they have the best specialty coffee in Prahran now that they have Ona on the bar. Brilliant menu, lovely atmosphere. Fantastic on a summer day with all the light etc.
S. N.
Loved the atmosphere. Food was amazing and worth the price! Definitely going back again.
b. t.
Nice cafe and restaurant with fancy and healthy food options and good coffee as well. Welcoming and nice staff. Sometimes the music is too loud and annoying. Highly recommended.
Great coffee and almond milk.
J. S.
We had dinner on a Saturday night where we had the mussels, kingfish, duck and steak. The first three dishes were incredible, however the steak was unfortunately a big let down being over cooked and really chewy. Our food arrived well before our drinks did meaning that my cocktail came as we were halfway through our meal. The wait staff were really lovely and kind. However, we were given our bill without us asking for it when we still had the table for another 30 minutes. We weren’t asked if we would like dessert or another drink prior to this. Ultimately we felt quite rushed out which certainly dampened the experience. Looking forward to trying again one day and hoping that our experience was just a one off. Thanks!
J. T.
Incredible decor and space with marble stone theme, a touch of class. Abacus serves amazing coffee. The oysters from Coffin Bay were fresh and juicy. Had my first try on broccolini and like it better than the broccoli. Not a fan of their lunch, the octopus was not tender and chewy. I think it is not fresh or it is a result of bulk cooking in the morning. The chilli loaded eggs is acceptable. Would be back for the coffee and decor but not lunch.
R. W.
I loved the design of the place - fairly open which is great in the warmer weather and enough space for larger groups and people with young children needing high chairs. Staff were friendly and helpful. The menu is also very interesting - we all decided to get different dishes so that we could try different ones. The mushrooms on charcoal bread and seaweed butter was a real winner.
C. C.
Perhaps the best cafe on Chapel Street but service needs improvement. Interior has an open kitchen with high ceilings and lots of tropical greenery between the seating areas. So much space inside but mostly full up especially during the weekend.
Expect to spend about $25 + on a decent brunch and coffee. Better to come here for the food and get your coffee across the road at Market Lane (Prahran Market). Not as friendly as other Eastern suburb cafes.
M. b. H.
Came to this fairly new venue for a brunch session and our eyes were instantly captured by the modern, classy, marble finished decors👌
The place is modern brunch style, excellent place for a brunch. Cod is the march special, my preferred, scrambled chill is less flavour, more for the bitter likers and a tab spicy🌶, great for a spicy start to the day.
Waiters are careful and very attentive too👊
Highly recommend this place to friends and family

Beautiful cafe with a plant and light-filled fitout. The coffee is really nice and prepared quickly from the takeaway window if you're in a rush. Service was a bit disorganised but friendly.
A. S.
Beautiful space, friendly staff, beautifully presented food. I wasn’t heaps into the smoked salmon I ordered but that might be because I don’t really like eggs so I gave my egg to my partner. Wish the beetroot bread wasn’t all crumbled up and dry!
P. G.
Airy with good helpful staff. We had seats on Chapel St which is a great place to watch the world go by. Interesting and varied menu
P. B.
Fantastic experience food was amazing and coffee is perfect. Also staff give you an amazing experience will definitely be back again

Great food and drinks. Lively place. Super friendly customer service.

the outside bbq restaurant is really good!
highly recommend wagyu, lamb ,king prawn and beer 🎉cheers 🍻(ins:Qiana_foodie)

Very stylish restaurant with great decor and ambience. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Seems like a busy spot, so I would recommend making a booking. The food choices looked really good and tasted amazing. The coffee was also excellent. There is plenty of parking in the multi storey parking lot behind.
L. J.
Good breakfast cafe for South Yarra. Cute vibe with the plants and decor. If you get the avocado toast, add a poached egg. The eggs are free range and delicious! Coffee was okay, they only offer long black or drip coffee.
N. J.
I love the hospitality, food and the vibe here. I come here regularly either for coffee or for food and drinks and never once have I had a bad experience. The staff definitely know how to treat their customers well even during peak times.
c.
Loved it! The avocado pumpkin croquettes were delicious and very crisp. The serving was very generous and incredibly filling. My friend insisted on sweets and so I had the pear tart. I found the serving slightly small but the fact that it was so good was probably a contributing factor. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back!
S. D.
Very very good food, nice ambience .
D. T.
Came across Abacus by chance and stopped in for breakfast. Nice suprise as meals were high quality and tasted fantastic. Enjoyed the atmosphere too. Prices were much higher than your typical cafe but worth it.
K. T.
Really nice location, cool staff, and super tasty food. Unfortunately the waiter forgot one item of the order, but when we told him, he just grabbed a to go sandwich and gave it to us for free as an apology. Really cool move of him!
C. G.
Very good food and extremely kind employees. A place to go for good food and good time. Chapel is also a great locatioñ to visit so, overall, i strongly advice a visit!

We were there on Sunday morning and waited for about 5 minutes to be seated when we thought it would take longer because there was a long queue before us. It didn’t take too long for us to find a table. The vibe, coffee and the service was great.
A. W.
This place is a bit all over the shop which is a shame because it could be really great given the location & great fit-out.
The staff all run around like headless chooks! They run between being too overbearing asking if you'd like to order more drinks when you have half a bottle of wine on the table that needs to be poured into your glass to disappearing for 20 minutes after you order to inform you the dish is not available.
The food is fair. The acoustics are terrible and its a joke if they sit you near the doorway which remains mostly open in the peak of winter.
A.
The food is phenomenal and the coffee is outstanding. The frozen coffees is definitely worth a try.
M. A. P.
The most stylish cafe I’ve ever been. The interior design is delightful and the food is excellent. Service was great!
C. S.
The breakfast was awesome. Better than expected. I got the bacon dish as it looked like it had the most meat, and oh boy did it. It was a lot more meat than I should have been eating for breakfast but it was delicious. Great value too. They also serve nitro cold brew which is a huge plus. Great place
R. F.
This place has the best interior aesthetic out of any cafe/restaurant bar I been so far. The service is great and expect no less on their food. Definitely worth the visit
J. L.
Great location and atmosphere.
I highly recommend.
D. C.
Visited here for Brunch. Was moderately priced, but the quality of food and presentation was second to none. Great coffee and will definitely be back.
M. C.
Good food, but a bit overpriced for me. Try the croquettes with jalapenos, very nice and spicy.
M. A.
Light and breezy, with a tree growing in the middle. You feel a little bit like you are at a picnic. What better way to start your day. Menu is off beat in that good way. And the food is delicious. A great spot for a long lazy breakfast or lunch. Of course you could do a quick bite to fuel up before hitting the market crowd.
L. C.
Great food very unique plates. A little on the pricey side but vibe and ambiance make up for it. Cool cocktails. Very friendly staff
S. K.
The atmosphere and vibe of this cafe is really good but the food and drinks are disappointing. The menu choices are not great, my bread was very dry. Coffee is good though If they can make changes to the menu would definitely go back for that atmosphere.
J. L.
Seasonal menu. Decent flavors. Order the roasted mushrooms or the pork belly burger. The bread is pretty good too.
K. N.
10/10 coffee! Food is fantastic. Great service too.
W. N.
Clean layout & friendly staff. Coffee was decent, pork burger was surprisingly good - clean & healthy tasting but lacking the punch of a traditional full fat charred flavoured burger.
V. F.
Excellent.. , but annoying waiters who every few minutes ask if you need anything else. In half an hour we had three different waiters, each of whom came three times to ask if we needed anything else. That way the guest has no privacy at the table and all the good atmosphere is spoiled. That’s how you drive guests away. Otherwise, a well-arranged space with live music, decent waiters (only if it's not crowded, don't disturb the guests, let the guest relax and they will want to stay longer.
S. V. A.
The coffee is smooth and silky, the food is delicious and the service is first class. LOVE Abacus!
A. P.
Food:
There are lots of options to share here which is what we did. We especially liked the hummus, charcuterie board and chorizo with potato skins. The cocktails we had were absolutely delicious. I recommend the davidson plum tea and the quandong fizz.
Atmosphere:
The interior is relaxing and comfortable. There are interior plants and various combinations of seats and tables. Including street bench tables. On a warm day the beautiful bay windows opened let in a nice breeze.
Service:
The only part of our experience that was a little disappointing were a couple of the waitresses. One was nice but we had some miscommunication issues as her English wasn't great. Another didn't seem to have the attitude to assist customers upon two basic requests she almost rolled her eyes or made excuses. It meant we didn't want to ask her anything. However, there were two very lovely and accommodating staff members who made up for it.
K. L.
Buzzing cafe close to Prahran Market. Delicious well presented food and great coffee.
M. H.
Nice service and food!
D. L.
Nice spot for breakfast and brunch. Dog friendly. I like that the menu options has different dishes alongside your usual eggs and avocado options. Service is friendly but sometimes can be a little slow as they do get very busy. I had the octopus and spanner crab crumpets there. The dishes are tasty, ok portioned but slightly a bit overpriced than your usual cafe. They do charge a surcharge for public holidays and big tables which I don’t think is necessary.
M. P.
Went there with friends for dinner. They had a DJ, great meal, awesome atmosphere and very friendly waiters. Highly recommend it.
L. K.
Abacus is definitely one of my go-to places to go out. On every occasion I've been there, the staff have made me feel welcome, the food and drinks have been stellar, and the pricing is reasonable for the quality and beautiful setting. Recently I organised a 21st dinner there and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had dining out. They accommodated various dietary requirements, served amazing food, and even were willing to stay open just that little bit longer until we had finished. Would always recommend!
f. t.
I like it here, it is very good, the first choice for coffee and brunch.
L. Y. X.
amazing café to have breakky .
lovely stuff
high celling and big windows, really enjoyable 😚
J. L.
Great brunch place. Every corner of this cafe looks instagram worthy. Seatings are comfy and cozy. Food and coffee is also on point. Good portion and most important, its yum. Looking forward to my next visit.
S. T.
Very popular cafe on Chapel Street, South Yarra. Lots of room & tables. Enticing menu, although on the dearer side. 3 of us had breakfast with coffees & that set us back by almost 100 bucks! Service was excellent despite how busy they were. Food presentation was excellent.
S. Y. L.
this is the first cafe that I visited during my recent Melbourne trip; the coffee and food are decent - definitely worth trying !

Beautiful atmosphere and excellent food. The broccolini is very good

Abacus Bar & Kitchen can always be counted on for fantastic food and excellent service.
From their wholesome breakfast and lunch menu, right through to their amazingly creative dinner menu, Abacus provides you with a wonderful gastronomic journey through the best of Australian ingredients.
The next time you are in Chapel Street, do yourself a favour and experience the wonder that is Abacus Bar & Kitchen. I promise you that it will be the experience of a lifetime.
T. D.
Used to love coming to Abacus, but service has really slipped lately ... I understand that training staff is important, but not at the expense of annoying paying customers. Today's experience (1045am on a Tuesday) - I told three wait staff we were ready to order, and each said "I can order drinks but not food, I'll get one of the others." It then took another 15 minutes of patience for someone to take our food order. Really poor experience.
That being said, the food is always top notch quality, as are the drinks. Just need to get the service fixed and hopefully those two stars can come back.
C. T.
Great food, great atmosphere, great staff....not a fan of their almond milk but that's my individual taste - am sure loads of others love it.
S. W.
This reminds me of a real California farm to table style restaurant. So fresh, really innovative. Great atmosphere and nice amount of space around the tables for comfort.
L.
Understated elegance and quality food on Chapel St. Perfect for intimate dinner or casual brunch. Lovely staff who are always attentive and friendly. Thank you for taking care of us. Will be back! ☺️
A. D.
Kind and nice staff! Fabulous and delicious brunch! We tried the grilled octopus, amazziiiinng! Such a supportive and friendly environment, my baby boy was crying in the parents/ dishabe room, one of staff suggested to put our meal in heater, after few minutes chef renewed our meal for us without asking! We had a wonderful experience!
T.
I've been here a few times now and what draws me to Abacus is the stunning decor and delicious brunch. However yesterday I realised they don't offer WiFi to their guests which is really quite a let-down for a contemporary cafe, as i would have loved to spend hours eating lunch and doing work on my laptop.
V. L.
My pup and I love it here, good location and beautiful place with delicious food! We’ve been here more than 3 times! :)
A. M.
Great food and professional service from some caring and passionate staff that went out of their way to serve.
Large interior with open window to street. Great vibe. Will be back and recommend the food that does not disappoint.
S. Q.
The staff are super friendly and accommodating and made sure that we absolutely loved everything
L. M.
The friendly staff accomodated my husband & I generously even though we didn't have a reservation. The steak I had was amazing, just let down by the chips. A salad or cooked veggies would complement that great steak better
L. H. B.
Lovely staff and killer food - I wish I could eat here everyday (don’t even get me started on the black wattle espresso martinis)
H. P.
This is one of my locals. Have great chai, brunch, lunch and dinner. Chill vibe during the day and great atmosphere during the night. Also sold local products during first lockdown to help the community out. Big plus.
R. M.
Amazing, healthy and delicious breakfast, great cookie too. The service was exceptional and I definitely recommend to all my family and friends.
C. K.
great food, good music
i visited in the morning, love theirs coffee and interior.

Very hipstery, but lovely staff and good food. I enjoyed the croquettes with speck very much, and the vegan pie pizza was delicious.
N. O.
Lovely space and retreat from Chapel St. Just popped in for a coffee and now I want to eat half of the brunch menu. Staff are polite and knowledgeable.

Amazing experience!!

Repeat customers. Always here whilst on holidays. Great food. Great ambiance.
J.
Lauren was amazing. Great service. Glad this place survived covid!

Delicious dishes and coffee. If the staffs have been a little kinder, the number of the stars might be 5.
L. L.
Popular cafe, but not really my taste.
S. N.
Great ambiance the staff are very friendly. the food came very quickly and was delicious. coffee could have been better
F. G.
After one of my favourite cafes shut down I was on the look out for a lovely chai. This place gave me something I cannot go past!
Abacus have a lovely modern interior with plenty of space and tables for all.
C. S.
The lemon myrtle (?) margarita (not in photo) Oh my goodness! Cocktails are so good I'll have to go back for dinner to try the food 😋
S. L.
The place looks fabulous, coffees are great, nice and relaxed atmosphere. I do love coming down here for my coffee 😊
T. B.
What an apsoluly amazing place, the vibes and buzz with every around with a great large open seating area the acoustics are perfect to sit and have a chat. Services is fast and very friendly, only had a coffee but amazing. Will definitely be back to try the food next time. Highly recommended for coffee.
M.
One of their course - fish.... It was a masterpiece.
Customer service is fantastic.
M. C.
Excellent food and good service .creative presents .love the chocolate desert . Definite will come back more .
J. M.
Food was absolutely delicious! Service was a tiny bit slow for a Friday breakfast when it was only about 1/4 full, but food came out in very reasonable time. Music was a tad loud too, but again, that's the venue choice which we could have avoided. Great overall, and would return as food and chai lattes were delicious!
L. P.
I like the environment,i come here 2-3 times a week,best coffee,best food,best service in Melbourne.
J.
Good food, and vibe. Service was below expectations, though.
m. H.
Food was wonderful and service was amazing xxoo

Great place for a tasty breakfast with the Family 👌🏻 Friendly Staff & Quick Service.
Nom Nom 😊

Have come here every now and again since opening, staff have always been friendly and attentive with food being thoroughly enjoyed. Most recently came here for evening drinks with a friend to relax and people watch. Great food, friendly chatty staff and the best old fashioned I've had in a long time! Gave our compliments to the gentleman making them and he actually came over and told us how he made them and about the bourbon / Melbourne moonshine co. he used, well and truly made our night. Thanks again!
P. B.
Fantastic food the oysters were delicious and fresh and the meals were perfect great service and friendly staff, highly recommended.
W. “. H.
It certainly has great decor with lovely staff.
A few months ago, they would constantly have the volume to loud, however am pleased to hear this has since changed.
Nice "busy but controlled" feel. Ordered a permanent tea, lovely flavour 👍 latte, very well made and a sparkling water. Overall a lovely place, but wouldn't go back for the price.
A. M. K.
First time I have visited this place with my parents and Baby.
No doubt the food was excellent but also the service was exceedingly well. My 11 month old bub was getting a bit impatient sitting while we eat, but one of the staffs / chefs got her chopped strawberries to calm her down and it did work!!
How thoughtful, it was a pleasantly shocking experience. I have never come across a restaurant in Melb where the staffs were so attentive and responsive. Definitely will visit again. Thanks again.
E. W.
Had an enjoyable brunch with my friend yesterday. The cafe decor is styling. Food was well presented, fresh and amazing. Seafood option in all-day menu. Warm customer service. Definitely will come back again. Recommended!
C. P.
One of the best cafe in melbourne
B. H.
Good environment, food is fair
L. N.
I had my birthday dinner there with a group of 9. The venue and vibe was nice however the food with the "larger plates" option was laughable we were wondering where the rest of our food was. The lamb rack consisted of just 2 small cutlets not actually a rack. The kangaroo loin was even smaller, for $30 - $35 each for a larger plate we were left hungry and went to Mc Donalds later across the road. You literally pay for a larger plate that they serve it on not actually more food. Our side was bigger for $12. The cocktails were good however, will likely just come back for drinks not food. We spent $500 only to still be left hungry.
F. B.
Lovely place for a dinner. I recommend kangaroo tartare and their amazingly rich mashed potato. Too much sourdough bread in the feed me option though. Staff is very nice.
H. T.
Food and drinks were great, staff were also friendly and understanding of an ordering mix up. Pretty expensive, but I’d be keen to try it out for brunch.
G. T.
Absolutely amazing experience, food and wine. Janelle (hope I spelt it correctly) was our amazing waitress for the night. We enjoyed the 'feed me' and will definitely come back for it! The girls in the kitchen were so accommodating and friendly. Execution was beautiful, everything was delicious. Absolute tunes all night.
Love Georgia and Tom
K. M.
I was admittedly skeptical about their “all-day” menu.... but this place pulls off a fantastic breakfast and share-plate lunch. The styling is on point and fresh, it’s a great setting to have a mid-day wine over lunch. I also like that it’s a decent space to bring a pram and the staff is always lovely.
C. M.
Ate here today, the staff were really prompt and food and drinks were of a very high quality. While we were here an elderly woman sat close to us and the waiter sat down beside her to discuss the menu and what she wanted to order, it was quite sweet, he gave her a lot of time. I’ll definitely be here again.
Y. Y.
Such beautiful place to eat. I came here for brunch an enjoyed a wonderful meal with friends.
G. N.
Modern edge to breakfast. Delicious food presented with an edgey twist. Lovely place for the best meal of the day.
K. J.
Great new brunch spot....Looking forward to going back to try the volcanic steak
T. E.
Bit disappointing, some dishes under cooked, some no seasoned adequately.
Not an amazing cocktail list. The fit out leads you to expect more than it delivers.
I wouldn't recommend it to friends.
C. M.
Went last night, ambience is amazing and we were fructose free/lactose intolerant and they were so gracious about trying to accomodate us despite a lot of their menu not being built for that!
C. T.
Previously I’d given 5 stars but the service and quality at Abacus has really dropped of recent, which is a shame. We used to really enjoy going here but the (new?) staff aren’t as friendly or reliable and the quality of the food has been a little lower. Real shame. We took a large group in Jan to show off one of our favourite Melbourne places and ended up with a hair in our starter and dodgy, pushy service and haven’t been back since. We still love their coffee and the overall decor, hopefully they can pick their A game up again soon.
J. S.
Brilliant! A beautiful space with incredible food! Will certainly go again! ❤
M. S.
Nice decor, and the moment you walk in you are made to feel at home.
Had the lamb shoulder, carrots, potatoes and green salad.
Everything came out quite quick and extremely well presented. Was all delicious and fresh. Staff/service was excellent and the waitress took the time to explain menu/portion sizes without judgement. The shoulder can easily feed 3 people, the picture is what was leftover between 2. Good value and overall a very enjoyable experience. Will be back for the duck platter which seemed quite popular and looked amazing.
One thing that really stuck out was the staff seemed to actually enjoy working there which made the experience all the more enjoyable.
J.
Cool location, delicious food and coffee! The almond milk is amazing. We had the Avocado-pumpkin breakkie really yummy! 👍
The waiters are really friendly and they are paying attention of their guests! Will definetly come back😊
J. S.
A beautiful space, good food and great cocktails, but the staff are badly trained. They're friendly but inattentive and the food takes FOREVER to come out. We waited for about 40 minutes for an antipasto plate to come out when the place was half empty. When I got sick of waiting I looked around for a waiter to ask for a hurry on and they were nowhere to be seen. Our waiter took our wine glasses from the table while we still had half a bottle of wine left because they hadn't bothered filling us up. When we found the half bottle, we drank it out of our water glasses. I'd have really enjoyed this place if the service and wait time wasn't so ordinary.
J. C.
Absolutely loved this cafe. The service was fabulous and the food was amazing. Blue swimmer crab crumpet was to die for. Thank you
P. D.
Excellent atmosphere and service. Well cooked, tasty and healthy food plus convenient location.
M. H.
Great food, Great vibe and friendly staff! A must go to if your ever on chapel street :)
p. l.
Food was nothing to write home about. The interior of the Cafe was more interesting than the menu. Service was okay. I was served pretty quickly but it lacked the friendliness and warmth you expect when you come to a Cafe. Overall, it's an okay experience. Will not be coming back as there are plenty of other great cafes in Melbourne with better food and customer service.
E. M.
A good restaurant overall. Food is outstanding and atmosphere matches. Staff are superb. The food is simple but perfectly done. Can't go wrong! Better book in advance.
J. P.
With the abundance of good cafes in this area it can be difficult which one to choose, especially for breakfast. This place has a more formal feel to it than relaxed cafe and the menu reflects this as well. Coffee was good and breakfast was ok. Because there are so many good places for breakfast with others having a simpler menu I rate 4 stars. Worth a try though for sure.
K. T. S.
Very trendy restaurant in the heart of South Yarra. You don't need directions to it, the very lush garden flourishing in the middle of the cafe will stop you to look and admire.
The plan was to have only coffee for me and tea for my husband. I tell you, it is quite a good coffee, so we ordered breakfast. I don't know about you, but chicken liver is my perfect definition of breakfast, and it has been years since I had a good one.
If you like beauty and nature like me, you will definitely love this place.
A. T.
Great coffee and food! Can be a bit pricey but it’s worth it for what you get! Designer interior creates such a warm, earthy and home-like atmosphere. Located next to the Prahran market and Aldi makes it a great location to go early in the morning on a Sunday after doing your weekly shop! Would recommend it to anyone in the area who hasn’t given it a go yet!
N. W.
Food and coffee were amazing, and environment was nice so we were happy about that despite the hefty holiday surcharge. Service could have been way better. Would've given 5 stars just for the food but one of the ladies who served us made us feel very uncomfortable. She hardly smiled back, was monotonous and acted like she didn't want to talk; moreover while we were still finishing up our food she came and took the plates off of our table without a heads up or making eye contact. Just reached forward and took the plates away, which caught us off guard. For how much we were paying for service and holiday surcharge it was not the kind of service we were expecting, when there are countless other cafes with great food and friendly service. It probably wasn't her intention(?) but it dampened our mood for the morning. Will visit again some time in the future, hopefully we will receive better service.
P. W.
Good food, great coffee.
L. G.
Looks swanky and a bit stiff. But the coffee staff are very friendly, bubbly, and great with all kinds of people. Did I mention, their coffee is routinely beautiful, and at the perfect temp to drink when served.

I have wanted to go eat at Abacus for some time now.
My partner and I headed off to Abacus for dinner. To start with we had a cocktail each, I started with a rosella spritz which was delicious.
This restaurant uses mainly local Australian ingredients which I really appreciated. Even the cocktails used bush food ingredients.
At another table I saw this most delicate cocktail and I had to try one. It was called a “Quandong Fizz” cocktail was sooo delicious, OMGosh everyone needs to try one of these. It was slightly acidic, but the froth cut through and provided a hint of sweetness to the drink. WOW! Hahaha
We initially started with some sourdough bread w olive oil and dukkah. This was absolutely delicious. The bread tasted like it was made w beetroot and the dukkah worked so well. Yummo!
We then had some kingfish tartare, which was delicately prepared and full of flavour.
I tried some port Lincoln sardines w ricotta and Coffs Harbour macadamia nuts. This was yummy, w the ricotta pink and slightly sweet.
We shared a main dish of Aylesbury duck breast, w plum and goats curd. This dish was exceptional, and the duck was served slightly above room temperature, and perfectly cooked. The duck almost melted in my mouth.
This was my dish of the night until I tried the dessert special which was a Magnificent Manchego Corn Cake. The was a Manchego corn cake was served w polenta, Manchego cheese, coriander crumble, raspberry coulis, and Earl Grey foam paired w mango and Raspberry Haagen - Dazs ice cream. OMGosh this dessert was at another level. It was soo tasty, it was one of the best desserts that I've had in a very long time.
This restaurant is easy to find on Chapel Street and it is a must visit! The cocktails are superb and the food, was amazing.
A. D.
Abacus surpassed my expectations in every way except the size of the menu. I would have liked to see more variety.
The decor is great: feels like a Scandinavian interior design expo with hanging gardens.
Seats: comfortable, padded, both low and at the back of the seat.
Drinks: cocktails were original with lemon myrtle, wattle seed etc.
The GSM wine was excellent for around $60 a bottle.
Menu: extremely original with one novel Australian ingredient, I had never heard of every two items.
This restaurant is one of the few that can claim to be ‘Contemporary Australian’.
Best dish: fried ox tongue and the octopus.
Worst dishes: cheese croquettes, tartare (too coarsely chopped, and not enough secondary flavours to the meat).
Service: truly fast class. Amber, our server, negotiated every obstacle I put before her. No easy task when you are a severely grumpy ex chef.
A second Dutch server was equally competent.
Amber had style and grace. She performed better than my last server at Vue de Monde.
Out of 8 or 9 restaurants I’ve visited recently on Chapel St. This is by far the best. Expect to pay a little more for this superior package.
E. L.
Nice atmosphere, coffee was good. They just need to do a proper bacon and eggs. Bacon they served was really thick and served on separate plate to look fancy. It wasn't good. Just get some normal crispy bacon! 🐷
S. M.
Great brunch spot right on chapel st! Their bread is madder in house and it is delicious!!
S. B.
A few friends recommended Abacus to me. We called in during a busy lunch and ordered 2 pizzas. They were definitely the nicest pizzas I've had, and the coffee was good too! I'll definitely be back. Great edition to chapel street, lovely staff, great bright open space with a nice vibe. I couldn't fault it 😊
P. S.
family friendly, we come here a few times a week for breakfast. consistently good/creative food and well made padre coffee. love the avocado and pumpkin croquettes. waiters are always polite and friendly even when the kids make a mess, the chefs even come out to give the kids strawberries.
A. B.
Delightful
Came in for lunch with no big expectations, and we enjoyed a lovely meal in a great spot. Had oysters and the special snapper that we were offered, was yum! Attractive drinks/cocktail menu if you prefer to skip the coffee. Good vibes in Chapel st with proffesional and attentive crew. Definetely coming back
K. S.
Very nice coffee here
(Haven’t tried the food yet)
Friendly staff
Very very clean toilets and nice smell 👃

Really lovely atmosphere and nice place to grab a tasty bite to eat or a quick chai. Located right next to Prahan market.
S. M.
Beautiful place, kind and polite staff, and so so delicious food! We love the grilled octopus. I will defiently go there again and again 😍
M. C.
Great dinner experience with a small group of friends, been there twice, food was amazing , service was second to none. Nothing better than dinning in a great atmosphere, in a beautiful place with professional staff making you feel comfortable and knowing what you want.
Looking forward to going back again.
E. F.
Love the decor, love the food. However, I've been here twice and the service is...just not quite there. I had a waiter who was looking at me and backing away as I was still ordering to get to the screen 1m away from us. I ended up ordering less than intended. I know it can be busy, but it would've been nice not to be rushed. The host at the front was the same, just cold. Nonetheless, i think I would still come back if I needed great IG pics :P
P. C. K.
Came here with a small group before going to the movies. Very friendly staff and a good selection of beers. We had a chorizo pizza and a seafood pizza and they were both very good. The portions were very generous as well. Really comfortable place that wasn't too noisy at 7-9pm on a Saturday night. All in all a very nice place to have a bite. We spent $100 for 6 beers and 2 pizzas. Very happy!
M. P.
Wonderful experience with Abacus! All around. Great coffee, unique delectable food and fantastic service and ambiance. The manager (I think- gentleman at the front) went above and beyond to provide services and fulfill my dining needs!! The barista made the most perfect latte with a beautiful design. Very professional barista :) This was followed by a delicious meal with fresh tasty ingredients AND my favorite... a rich, decadent yet fluffy chocolate cake- perfectly balanced. The music here is great in addition to a beautiful atmosphere that has a modern feel but simultaneously earthy with plants everywhere. GREAT SPOT!
A. B.
Good coffee (an 8 out of 10 on my scale ) and really good Gluten free pizza. Didn't have a food cabinet to choose something small to go with a coffee which seemed strange. Really nice feel to the place and always seems to be busy
B. O.
Very efficient service and the food was excellent!
K.
Interesting menu, lovely service and fabulous chai latte! We had the smoked salmon dish, juices, chilli loaded eggs and the kids were catered for.. definitely a good experience visiting from Adelaide! Lots of great Adelaide produce on the menu!
E. M.
Great fit out, great food, very friendly staff… Wonderful lunch overall.
D. P.
The staff at this establishment are very well trained, very impressed. The coffee was good but the food is a little over rated.
J. L. H. F.
Okay now that we are in lockdown 2.0 please do yourself a favour and go and try the beacon & egg bagel is the best! A bit heavy but totally worth it. Also their cold drip is sick. 🤟
S. L.
The bests cocktails. Food was alright but the drinks were amazing. The staff were great. Special mention goes to Jacob for being such a good sport and making our birthday lunch extra fun.
A.
Visited for lunch. Excellent décor, extremely polite and attentive staff but the chef got completely carried away with exotic food combinations and overlooked the taste. The dishes looked spectacular (we had 3 dishes in our group) but the flavours were completely out of balance, actual amount of food closer to an entrée and rather pricey for the quality and quantity. Not coming back.
N. B.
Abacus boasts a nice atmosphere, great service and delicious fare. It's great for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink or coffee and sharing plates. A popular spot with lots of energy. The size of the venue means you often don't have to wait too long, even though it gets quite busy.
A. T.
Gorgeous cafe with beautiful service we will be back!
S. A.
Love the big airy space! Will be great to sit down and have a brunch properly, but in the meantime keen to go back and grab a can of their abacus spritz to take away.
N. t.
Excellent interesting tapas but less attention to deatail in service. No refill of water, very hard to put in orders after advising we needed to leave at a certain time. Front staff excellent, wait staff as blind as many...Good wine selection, priced up a bit.
C. W.
I've been here twice now. Both times, the staff were rude, ignored me when I came in wanting a table and were nasty and blunt when my friend and I asked to split bill. If you leave breakfast feeling annoyed because of how your waitress treated you, it's a sure sign they have failed in the customer service category. The food is nice, decor is trendy but I won't be going again.
J. H.
Beautiful light space with ample room for business lunches. Vibrant flavour combinations that play to any palate; excellent chai latte makes for a lovely addition to your meal. OP service makes this place a deal 🤝
S. S. (. S. C.
Great scene at Abacus, lovely staff too!
A. Y.
Great place for brunch or a coffee to start your day!
B. H.
I want to love Abacus. It's a stunning place. The coffee is amazing but the food... It's so underwhelming, it's dissapointing. Looks great but man, i get so dissapointed leaving a place $30 poorer and still incredibly hungry.
Portions are genuineky stingy. I've been 3 times over the last 3 years and each time it gets a bit worse.
It's a no from me.
D. C.
I visit often. The coffee is always good, and I usually get a muffin.
M. B.
Paul gave me the best and most memorable customer experience I've ever had.
M. C.
Open air, great food and location (oysters are very expensive at $5 each). Great place for a Sunday hangover.

An upgrade on your typical lunch/brunch experience. A creative menu executed by chef's who clearly have a passion for their craft and pride in their presentation. The service might come off slightly aloof -understandable by some of the patrons. Will return mid-week for a more relaxed local vibe and avoid on Saturday/Sundays.

PAUL was probably one of the best hosts i have ever had in hospitality. give the man a raise !
M. A.
I really liked the place but too much pressure to order something. I could not check all the menu. I asked for one ice coffee (with ice cream) which the waiter understood but i got a late with some cubes of ice inside .. how horrible was the taste!!
PD: I feel sorry for the girl that was sitting next to me who found a piece of plastic in her food and she did not get any apologies for it.

Great food, really great service...just didn't realise the surcharge on weekends was still a thing..still had the best breakfast 🍳🥙

Food that tastes good and a relaxing calm atmosphere. Pumpkin and avocado was lovely. Would definitely go back.

Classy yet casual. This restaurant has a great atmosphere, great food (exceptional presentation), great service and is fairly well priced for the experience. It is a very modern setting in a trendy, well known area of Melbourne.

The flavours of the Food were amazing. We had the charcuterie plate and calamari share plate for starters. We had prawn ragu pork belly and the beef blade for mains. There was plenty of food and we shared 2 desserts between 3 because we had juuussst enough room left!!! The wine list was also excellent.

A+ Food and Coffee in a lovely space. My go-to for Chapel St!
K. W.
New renovation with different atmosphere, average seafood plate.

Fitout, coffee, service and pricing was all great (although 10% surcharge on weekends?) I had the Folded Chilli Eggs which were underwhelming. Was just normal scrambled eggs with Sriracha on top, and the flavors didn’t work well together - the pickled mushrooms didn’t gel with the dish. My partner had the pumpkin and avocado which was good, but was a small serving and she left still hungry.

Great food and coffee but they need to chill with the house-made almond milk. I've forgotten to specify that I didn't want it a few times and it always tastes either really sour or super grainy and unfiltered.
T.
I do like the food and the ambience, BUT it hasn't got wifi!! I think this is just ridiculous! With the amount of people I bring down Chapel Street for coffee meetings where we would tap into wifi!! When I travel with business, all the cafes I go to have wifi (even Starbucks!), its definitely NOT somewhere I would take my business contacts, which is a real shame!

Great space. The food is good although I think the buckwheat crepes are better as a dessert than breakfast. The Tim Tams AND chocolate ganache makes it too sweet for me; and for a breakfast/lunch item, it's too much for me.
H. A.
This is not really a place for very young children, however, the staff were lovely. They suggested dishes and drinks which were very much appreciated. Thank you.
R. G.
Awesome service, great vibe, brilliant dishes.

I've had coffee a couple of times (Almond latte) here and really like the coffee. Decided to have lunch thinking the food would fit the impressive decor and beans - Unfortunately not. I ordered chilli eggs on GF toast and was not impressed. Flavourless, the eggs cold in certain parts. Also had the calamari salad. There were too many components on the plate. A mix of sweet, savoury and spicy which was just too overwhelming. My juice was yummy. Will be back for bevs, sans lunch.

Boojie AF!
I love this place, very “Southside” as we would say in Melbourne.
Their coffee is excellent and they have a fascinating and delicious menu.
It’s easy to access from the Sandringham train line and from the chapel street tram.
A.
I LOVE this establishment. Its a new kid on the block. Owner is apparently from Byron Bay. Makes sense. The atmosphere has a positive vibe and staff are so friendly and professional. Food is delightful and I have to say they serve the best Chai I"ve had in Melbourne.
L. B.
Very nice ambience, chill cafe music and good food at decent price
C. I.
The atmosphere is stunning. However, a 45 minute wait for food isn't. I had the Cauliflower heart and that was delicious. My boyfriend's order left much to the imagination.

Abacus is hard to miss if you’ve been down Chapel Street, it’s a big unit on the corner and when they fold back the windows in summer, it dominates the block. Tables are set in smaller groups, providing much needed intimacy, in an otherwise grand space. The finish is undoubtedly high class and the gorgeous attention to detail, such as the hessian sacks of sugar, really add to this.
Abacus offers both a day and evening menu, as well as some great looking options for those Friday drinks. Unfortunately it was a little early for alcohol when we visited so we sampled their coffee and day menu. Both the batch and nitro coffee were enjoyable. The batch is a pleasant, mild blend without the bitter undertones of many batch brews. It’s delicious and easy to drink. Now I’m not usually a fan of Nitro but Abacus’ blend has a light sweetness which worked well, and I actually found myself leaning toward this slightly over the batch.
I opted for the pumpkin croquettes, and avocado, served with feta, black beans, corn and a poached egg. I was initially concerned it would be too sweet, but the smooth pumpkin croquettes, and delicious, ripe avocado, were nicely balanced with the huge chunks of feta, and the salty chopped tomatoes. For someone who usually swears by bacon on all savoury breakfasts, this was an incredibly enjoyable vegetarian meal that also plated beautifully.
My other half went for the cape clear rashers, which in sharp contrast to my dish, are a meat eaters dream: alongside the chunky rashers are pigs cheek, crackling, blonde sausage, a chunky chutney, poached egg and toast. Again, it looked gorgeous on the plate and he found the elements well balanced – with those rashers being the clear hero of the dish – closely followed by the crispy crackling. Other parts of the dish were well cooked, and it gave a lovely fine dining twist to a traditional brunch. Dishes are priced at the higher end for brunch (most are $18+) but I think you’d agree they are well worth it for the quality on offer.
Although considerably stuffed after our brunch, we managed to squeeze in one of their chocolate fondants each. These are the perfect little finale to your brunch, or a naughty treat with one of their delicious coffees.
Despite feeling somewhat “fancy”, Abacus has a real laid back vibe. Helped by the comfy seating, and the large space, it’s great for those long brunches with friends, that overdue business meeting that you know is going to need a LOT of coffee (their bottomless batch at $6 is a bargain), or those chilled out afternoon drinks after a tough day. It’s lively, but not loud, busy but not crowded. Service was highly attentive, yet not invasive. Cafe/bar/restaurant – I’m unsure what to classify Abacus as – it has the atmosphere of a swanky bar, the food of a great restaurant and it’s coffee will more than hold it’s own against most of Melbourne’s cafes. It’s a great laid back, all rounder that’s well worth making the trip to Chapel Street for a visit.

Such hipster fodder for a good Melbourne time

Alrighty ladies and Gentleman!

Not intrusive to an intimate dining experience
Sensational food with so much flavour

Friendly staff, good food and great drinks. Ambience, decor & vibes were a bonus!

Manuka - what an absolute legend you are. My friend and I Anita are sitting in a bar and we thought of just how fantastic your service was. We work in a service orientated industry of realestate where it’s imperative we consistently provide the best quality service and you exceeded our expectations because you made us feel at home. We’re from Sydney and we couldn’t thank you enough for your hospitality. Yes for those who are reading the food is unbelievable and worth every penny and time of your day but just so you know, Manuka’s service is the cherry on top. This restaurant has everything!

We had nice breakfasts there. Quality dishes and great friendly services. Just be aware that it's not a cheap breakfast place. If you can afford it you should enjoy it.
S. W.
My favourite restaurant in South Yarra. Yummy food! Highly recommended.
D. K.
Pretty good coffee here since they changed beans.
P. A.
Trendy and spacious. Nice venue with a lot of natural light inside. Homemade limonade highly recommended.
B. M.
Amazing place, great ambience, great food, lovely live music and really good service.
R. S.
By far the best breakfast in Melbourne i have had. An ambience so fresh because of the perfect amount of greenery and a meal so delicious! There's nothing better to kick start your day!
B. C.
Great food (think above average stereotypical Melbourne brunch, but with a bit more originality), friendly service, comfortable (and readily available) seating. Go to cafe/10 on this block of Chapel.
M. G.
Amazing atmosphere but really average food.
Don't forget to ask for salt.
L. D.
The best brunch on Chapel street. Had the buckwheat and chia crepes, perfection , with the seasonal orange sherbet cocktail. You have to try the sherbet, amazing. Food, service, presentation, atmosphere en pointe. Excited to return and sample your Pizza Abacus.
M. A.
Food was delicious. Abit pricey but good food
J. B.
Hands down the most pretentious cafe on this part of chapel. I'd rate it higher but their almond milk isnt great and their nitro coffee is way expensive.
S. A.
Great service, charming ambience and exquisitely presented and tasty food. Trendy crowd but doesn't feel too pretentious. Reasonably priced with friendly, knowledgeable wait staff. We'll be back.
J. B.
Service was good. Food was pretty good. A little expensive. We went for brunch and there wasn't a huge selection of dishes. Maybe it would be better to go for dinner.
S. S.
Have to wait long time to get in but the food and the service makes it worth the wait!
Pumpkin croquet thing is my absolute fav!! Customer service is 10/10
O. J.
Great food, great pizza!! Great environment to sit and dine. Clean and well decorated. Friendly staff and if you’re lucky you’ll find parking near it.
S. C.
Been here a few times now for brunch, lunch, and dinner. The food was excellent each time. Good vibe to the venue, always busy but not too loud for conversation.
N. M.
There are some interesting drinks to try. Awesome ambience. Lively place. Super friendly customer service.
R. H.
$6 bottomless batch brew coffee (beans are from Maker coffee, the best in melbourne in my opinion) great fit out and awesome place to chill out while you get buzzed for the day ahead.
A. P.
Came here on the weekend, interior is wicked and food pretty solid - for a change though the thing that really stood out for me was the waiter (pretty sure his name was Tim), such a friendly and genuine waiter is so hard to come across. Cheers!
K. N.
Thick cut bacon and delicious coffee
P. R. W.
Highly recommend this place to go for great coffee, yummy menu, drink great wine etc! Love the atmos & service staff who enjoy being there! 😃
H.
Excellent coffee and good food. I had chicken ribs and it was yummy, downside was the slaw salad as it was so plain with no dressing. Overall very good
J. L.
nice environment but food was average.
J. B.
Seven bucks for an iced coffee? I drink coffee out a lot and that is a dead set rip off (even if it tasted good). Cafes just up the road charging the standard price for all coffees $4.50-$5.00
C. “.
Pretty good I like that they had Sub Zero there
J. T.
Great place to hangout
J. S.
The staff was amazingly friendly and the food was delicious. Highly recommended

Interesting place... staff were funny and amazing.... food was very amazing and tasty. Would love to try the homemade cornflakes for breakfast one day.... the place is very good to people watch as well....
L. P.
I found that coffee is bit over priced compare to other shops in this area. Taste didn't that good.
O. N.
Went there to eat with a friend this evening, it was perfect, impeccable service, the staff has a good knowledge and give good advices on the menu, quality of food is spot on as well, would recommend it to anyone, probably the best spot on Chapel Street.
G. S.
Love the inventory pizza... 👍 delicious!

Great space and seasonal produce

Great place to chill out with mates. Would've given 5 stars if t wasn't for *a little bit too much* salty smoked salmon. Good experience overall.
D.
All I can say is wow about the food and atmosphere. Jay was great.
Highly recommend a must try. When I am back from Sydney will come again.
M. W.
Beautiful space. The food was nice but the way it was presented made it hard/annoying to eat. Went for breakfast. Coffee was nice. Would not visit again.
T. N.
Wonderful destination on Chapel Street. One of the best coffee and breakfast/brunch in town.

S. G.
Delicious brunch options and nice ambience. Unfortunately no wifi though.
W. G.
Cool decor and vibe. Food is on the fancy side with a bathroom upstairs. Music a bit loud so not great for a meeting. Enjoyed it elsewise

Came here on a Saturday night. Maybe they were understaffed as the service was painfully slow. The seafood pasta and cheeseboard were excellent.

Came here on a Saturday morning for breakfast. The atmosphere and decor are lovely but the service and food were fairly average.

Good coffee. Food is good but a bit overpriced for the size of the portions honestly. The place is beautiful and service is good.
