Comments of Cafe Carpenter

Staff were really friendly, very cute little restaurant. Be sure to check out the little shop at the back for Japanese icecream and snacks. Food was really delicious, I was very impressed.

cafe carpenter caters to those who seek for a casual intimate dinner in a small and almost eclectic restaurant. If I had said “surprise me” and my dinner partner took me here, I would have been suitably impressed. Reservations are recommended for dinner, it got packed pretty quickly on a Friday night for us.
It’s natural to feel wary about restaurants which serve both Japanese and Korean cuisines. But boy, I had a pleasant and enjoyable meal here. The seafood okonomiyaki (always add cheese when the option presents itself) was one of the best versions I’ve sampled here in Melbourne. Crispy and delicious, I always find it a way to sneak vege in your meal without ordering a blatantly healthy dish.
The Korean pork belly dish got the flavours right, but the meat was a bit tougher than what I was used to for rice bowls. The karaage chicken salad was crispy and delicious - certainly more attention was paid to the chicken than the salad, which needed a bit more seasoning.
Our food came up to about $50 which was reasonable for a small business. Loved the little Japanese restaurant ambience and the Asian supermarket next to it too. Will be back!

A hidden jewel. Cosy and relax setting. Menu, not a huge selection but food quality is great. Staff are friendly. A great place to be for small groups. Can spend hours chitchatting with friends in mid summer nights.
M. W.
A quaint cafe offering a selection of tasty Korean and Japanese styled dishes.
Friendly and welcoming service in a cosy casual setting.
A wide range of dishes in the menu.
The spicy beef ribs was notable with rich flavour and tender meat.
The great matcha latte is also worth a mention.
With limited seating, come early or expect to wait for a table.
Can recommend and will come again.
K. R.
Very very cute place, super authentic! Really cool how they have a grocery next door as well. Looking forward to dining at their Cafe space once open again!
M. T. L.
The small eatery reminds me of my trip to Japan, with it's quirky little decorations around the place.
We have pretty much enjoyed nearly everything that we've ordered so far.
The summer udon salad was a favorite of mine. Okonomiyaki was delicious and hearty.
These photos are from across two visits.
Both times my partner and I enjoyed ourselves, we ordered three dishes to share on both occasions, not that the serving was small, bit because we were hungry and wanted to try the menu.

If you're looking for delicious food that will always make you excited to eat - then you HAVE to try Cafe Carpenter. It is some of the best food I have ever had and the staff and owner are the loveliest people. The take away compared to dine in is such a minimal difference that both give the same experience, minus the atmosphere and scenery of the restaurant itself. You have to give this place a go!! And try the Karage Chicken - you'll thank me later!
C. I.
Fantastic staff, patient and friendly. Rather authentic Asian food. Tucked away and easily passed. Gets really busy in the evening, daytime lunch highly recommended. Takoyaki was downed well and the mains we order was perfectly filling on a cold winter day.
P. W.
Fantastic Korean+Japanese cafe that wouldn't be out of place in a hip inner-city suburb. I was a little worried from the description that the food might be generic "pan-Asian" but I needn't have worried: the two owners are Korean and Japanese respectively so the food and drinks are authentic. Great lunch spot if you're shopping at Chadstone - I just wish it was closer to the city for dinner!
J. L.
A charming little Japanese restaurant/cafe that serves delicious food and beer from the tap. The menu is simple and to the point. Ordered several dishes and we're pleasantly surprised at how delicious they turned out to be. Food were served decently quick, considering how its just a husband and wife team.
Would definitely return again.
C. K.
I have eaten here a number of times over the last couple years the most recent was a takeaway which was just as good as eating in. The variety of dishes have been tasty, fresh, generous portion size and a good price. The staff have been really friendly and remembered me from my first visit to their little store to get ingredients to make okonomiyaki.
I would highly recommend Cafe Carpenter and there are some GF options for people as well.
B. N.
Quaint little Japanese café close to Chadstone. Loved the ornate space, authentic atmosphere, and the quality of food and service here. The chicken doria and katsu curry were super scrumptious. Food definitely is comparable to A LOT of spots in the city where they usually charge $6-$10 more for similar dishes.
H. D.
The nicest service I've ever experienced in my life. Food is great too. Really good portions and price. Could not recommend enough!!
T. Y. (.
Gorgeous small restaurant. Remind me of “izakaya” in Japan. Homemade tacoyaki is really remarkable. Both Japanese and Korean style food are good to try. Don’t miss out Irish coffee and match latte in such a cold winter. Enjoy it. Must go there more often.
K. P.
Oh..where to begin. Korean, Japanese and everything in between, the sheer variety is a bit overwhelming at first. If I could order everything I just might. Normally I am a bit skeptical about places with too many choices, but at this place they do not disappoint.
If you are looking for a friendly neighborhood restaurant and drinking place (Like an Asian Fushion Cheers?), but maybe are unsure of what you want, but just know that you want good food, then Cafe Carpenter is the place for you.
It is not easy to find a place with a classically trained chef from Japan and someone who also actually lived and breathed the Korean street food scene. Food wise, from the LA Ribs, to the Donkatsu, and Takoyaki everything is excellent and authentic. Wide selection of alcoholic drinks, coffee, as well as desserts. The pricing is also very reasonable for comparable quality.
While the quality, variety and service were all excellent, the one thing that stood out most for me was the friendliness and warmth of the owners and staff. I highly recommend.
j. c.
Friendly staffs. Was able to accommodate our family of 9. Food was very nice. Nice ambiance.
L. Y.
Always love my experience at Cafe Carpenter and can't wait to return, service is on point and food is always amazing. One of the only places I know I can get authentic Takoyaki made fresh not that frozen and deep fried stuff you normally get at other places.
Highly recommend the Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki as well as the curry udon. This little cute cosy Japanese Korean restaurant is sure to tick some of your food craving boxes!
Can't wait for another amazing Matcha latte! will be back again and again!
W. J.
I've been here twice. What can I say! Great food, great vibes! Watching the chef's make takoyaki is always a pleasure.
Keep up the great work. One of the best cafes in town.
M. K.
This place is a hidden gem amongst what feels like a culinary-barren pocket of Chadstone. You wouldn't pick it from the streets, but look a little closer and you will discover a hip, Japanese cafe with a generous menu. The food is delicious and the relaxed vibes will really take you away from the daily grind.
J.
Great atmosphere, tasty food and friendly service. Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake)highly recommended!
B. L.
This place took me back to Japan. Awesome authentic food. The okonomyaki, braised beef, takoyaki and katsu curry were all delicious.
C. T.
Food was amazing especially the cheese filled takoyaki. Lovely staff who reminded me of Japan and how polite and welcoming they are.
R.
Food was excellent. I have ordered their hot chocolate and it was very tasty. But the main meals are a little bit pricey for me. Especially when their servings are just small to average despite the high prices. But the service is excellent.
R. Y. J. Y.
Korean Japanese fod restaurant. My wife loves this place cause they have nice small dishes. It maybe a bit sweeter than food in japan. They have lots of korean food as well and they are nice too. Staff are not friendly at the time of our visit but it was OK but food is always nice here( a bit sweet). we struggled to find a car park but u just have to have some luck. Also toilet is ok but when u go downstairs, just be careful.
H. T.
Café Carpenter is indeed a cute café / restaurant with unique furnishing and is hyped up a lot. Hence, I decided to give it a shot.
Let’s start with the seating arrangements, the seatings are a bit too cramped and close together (similar to seats in a cinema or an aeroplane) for my liking. It is hard to have a conversation with someone you’re dining with and you can just overhear conversations from people dining next to you.
Now with the menu, one side has Japanese cuisine and the other Korean. We ordered;
Octopus with wasabi – This is good.
Takoyaki – I’ve had a lot of takoyakis in from various places in Melbourne as well as in Osaka, Japan. The Takoyaki they served here was just to gooey and falls apart as soon as they are touched. Flavour was good though but texture was just not there.
Bossam – This is average / good.
Okonomiyaki (Seafood) – Flavour and texture is similar to the Takoyaki so in hindsight I wouldn’t order this again if I am ordering the Takoyaki as well.
In terms on friendliness, I would say average as well. We arrived at 8.30pm on a Thursday. It took pretty long for the waiter / waitress to take our order and it also took pretty long for the food to be served. I looked at the kitchen and it was pretty small so that’s probably why.
Overall, a nice setting with average food.
N. C.
Interesting place with unique furnishing and a great combo of cuisines - Japanese and Korean! Enjoyed their food and the environment but goodness me was the waitress rude, unfriendly and ruthless! She took our orders with no smile whatsoever, impatient and uninterested, then basically after that wants nothing to do with us. Dumped our food literally anywhere on the table even when we’ve gestured it’s for someone in particular. We were just being a normal customer, zero pain in the bum, not sure what her problem was, maybe just not having the best day, but my co-workers said she was like that last time they were there! Other waitresses are friendly tho, but sadly she was our designated wait staff.
W. L.
Nice food friendly staff , and reasonable price
I love this place !
B. P.
Friendly without being overbearing or chatty (unlike some companies). I will definitely use them again when needed.
A. T.
This place is an absolute gem, serving fantastic Japanese and Korean food for lunch and dinner. Their kaarage is to die for and the selection of Japanese beers and sake is amazing! I would highly recommend a visit as their supermarket section has some hard to find Japanese staples as well. The service is impeccable, warm and very welcoming, I can't wait to come here for a proper dinner once lock down ends!
T. L.
I went here on the recommendations of a friend and have since gone back three more times in two weeks! The food is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and inviting and the service is endearing. The supermarket has a great selection with a great beer and spirits collection. My partner and I can't wait for lockdown to finish to enjoy the full dine in experience.
S. L.
Lovely place for hearty delicious food. friendly staffs as well, thanks

The feel of this place is so homey and the staff are so friendly. Always keep coming back here with my family for the home style cooking.
J. L.
Small, affordable eatery. Don't be fooled by the cafe name, you can eat dinner there too. Be sure to book or call ahead though, space is limited. Couldn't believe how cheap it was. Also the decor is awesome.
B. L.
They simply have the best okinomiyaki in town. Special presentation in coffee and food. A huge surpirse at a rainy weekend morning by myself.
M. L.
The best experience and food I’ve had in Melbourne for a very long time. The food tasted like it was fresh from Japan! Fantastic and mouth watering. Wish I could still go there everyday!
I had the karaage, shared the okonomiyaki, takoyaki and had the avo smoothie/latte . Miss it so much :)
N. C.
The food is delicious, the staff are extremely friendly and its such a cute restaurant. A real home style feel to it! Definitely worth a visit!
W. O.
Awesome place with super tasty food and smooth coffee! It deserves come backs!
W. Z. N.
Nice vibe, delicious Japanese and Korean food, nice coffee and good services! Love it ❤️
T. L.
Food was delicious however when the place gets lively/busy, they have a small kitchen which means it may be a bit of a wait on food. They were accommodating when asked to put food for take away though as I was in a rush to be somewhere.
Y. H. K.
Took me a long time deciding if I should review this place. After a week long meditation and enlightening retreat, I grew out of my selfish self and decided to share this amazing gem with the public. This is my secret hangout spot. It’s my little time travel to Tokyo when I look at my bank account and can’t afford a flight to the land of the rising sun. Great food and extensive range of Japanese alcoholic beverages. No better place to have a HIGHBALL!!!!
V. H.
Simple home cook style delicious meals. One of the few places that have Asahi on tap. Friendly owner.
B. L.
Nice Japanese & Korean style food. Good coffee as well. Okonomiyaki was very nice.
J. L.
Great coffee and fantastic food, if you're in the area definitely check it out!
I. N.
Food was very tasty and service was friendly and prompt. They provide free-flow drinking water. The beef ribs dish was very good. Only feedback is that ventilation could be better as we left the cafe smelling like our food. Perhaps it was because it was cold today and they had to keep the door shut. Anyway, I would still recommend. This is my 2nd visit.
V. L.
The most adorable hidden gem of the eastern suburbs! The atmosphere and food is reminiscent of the homely & humble feel of Japan cafes. The owners are friendly and welcoming. To top it off, they make THE best Takoyaki in Melbourne. I will be coming back here every so often! Well worth the visit!
S. H.
The atmosphere is perfect Japanese style. We had chicken doria and Tonkatsu. The foods are 100% real Japanese. Staff are all Japanese. They recognized I am a Japanese too🥺
I felt nostalgic and make me nearly cry. Open morning to midnight is also very Japanese style😭 I went to many Japanese cafes in Melbourne but it was all fake even owner is Japanese.
I highly recommend to come if people want to eat REAL Japanese foods.
H. T.
The customer service cannot be more friendly and warming. These people know how to catch and make loyal customers. I deeply enjoyed my day with my partner and friend.
J.
Cutest little Japanese cafe I've ever been to!! Owners and staff are amazing, as is their home cooked food. Plus ice cold beer (Max) on tap! Cannot fault the place.
T. Y.
Good food, good coffee, good service
C. T.
Awesome food. Simple and nice. Staffs are very friendly as well.
S. O.
What a fantastic and unexpected gem to find in little old Malvern East! Atmosphere is halfway between a Melbourne cafe and the kind of genuine casual dining experience you'd find in Shibuya or Osaka. We loved the variety of drinks and Japanese / Korean menu. Expect healthy, delicious, casual fare at even more casual prices! 🍜🍢🍶🍵✌🏼
N. A. T.
Cafe Carpenter is a wonderful place where the staff and owners make you feel your connecting back to your childhood that you wish you had, where your mother whips up a meal after a hard day at work, and that's my depiction on how I thought of the place
P. K.
Awesome food and really friendly staff. Can't wait to return and try out more of the menu. Definitely the best takoyaki we've had over here.
B. F.
My usual haunt when I'm feel hungry or craving a drink in the area. Good choice of Korean/Japanese food. Best Asahi beer on tap I've had so far in Melbourne served nice and cold! Chiko and Young are very friendly and charming!
R. A.
Hidden gem, real japanese restaurant.
V. P.
The food is delicious. Service is awesome. The staff ever so friendly. Never disappoints. It's food served with passion and you can taste it. Beer on tap, cosy place for lunch and dinner.
A. S.
My favourite thing about this place is the community that it has managed to build about itself, the feeling of coming home into a welcoming family.
The best place for everything from breakfast to dinner and a drink or two! The staff are amazing and the quality is second to none.
Highlight dishes include the Takoyaki, the Bossam, and the Tebasaki.
T. H.
Awesome little quirky japanese/korean cafe aptly named cafe carpenter as much of the interior has been hand crafted by the owners. Great casual, laid back, open, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and late opening hours. The staff are friendly and the food is devine. The choc brownie parfait was spectacular, and the miso soup amazing. All the food/and drink we've had here has been in a class of its own. Top notch.
M. D.
Went to this place because of the high rating in Zomato. The place is quite small with not much seats and limited food selection. But it turns out that the food was great! We ordered three dishes and they were all amazing! Love the food and will be back again sometime!
M. S.
Very busy for Sunday lunch. High chance of having to wait for a table or getting turned away as the kitchen closes 2pm. The service is a little slow due to the crowds but the Okonomyaki was delicious despite having slightly more mayo than I would have liked. The Korean spicy chicken was just ok and the Tebasaki soy chicken good.
D. M.
Delicious food, wonderful staff and a great cosy feel. Good selection of Japanese Beers and a very authentic style to the place. Will definitely be returning.
A. C.
My favourite neighbourhood gem in Melbourne. All dishes are home recipe with a fusion twist. It is cosy and perfect for a small group catch up with friends. All beef ribs dishes are fantastic
E. C.
What a find. Small place with gorgeously presented food. The iced avocado latte was exceptional. My new favourite smoothie. Such friendly staff
M.
It was pretty good, good place to take a date or a few close friends.
Afterwoods I just wanted to binge watch midnight diner
L. M.

E. B.
Had a beautiful lunch today. My partner and I could not be happier with the beautiful food and friendly service!
Will definitely be going back!!
S.
Great little place with excellent atmosphere. Well priced tap beer and the selection of dishes to share were very tasty. A little cramped! :) Recommend the okonomiyaki.
S. D.
Such a charming and homely little Japanese Cafe, with the most polite staff/owner. Highly recommended! Alot better than braving the crowds at Chadstone, that's for sure.
S. N.
Cozy little cafe with friendly service and great food! The okonomiyaki and tori tabasaki are both great! Hope to try the Korean cuisine next time! Enjoy the time in the cafe!
F. Y.
Great local restaurant to get your fill of Japanese and Korean fusion. There is also a mini market in the restaurant and it brings back travel memories.
D. M.
Excellent food and service in a great space. It's very small, which is part of it's appeal. It's also nice and quiet.

A great little local
M. P.
What a cute little cafe! The decor reminds me of cafes hidden in tiny laneways in Japan. Service is prompt and friendly. The menu looks good. Spicy pork belly is delicious. Although I’m not a fan of the baked sardines, the cheese flavour is too overpowering, you can’t even taste the sardines much. Drinks list is excellent. I love that they have Asahi beer on tap. Space is limited though. Getting a table for a large group might be difficult on weekends.
J. K.
Amazing food, a modern Japanese/Korean fusion menu which never dissapoints. Service is always great here and the restaurant is super cosy. We always come back!
