Went here for dinner on New Years Eve, service was 5 star as was the food. Even the potatoes were spectacular, every dish was a flavour bomb. Wine list expensive but we enjoyed the cocktails and they were reasonably priced. We will definitely be returning for lunch very soon. Highly recommend the Apple Soufflé, outstanding 🙌🍎

Setting and decor is amazing. It manages to be upscale yet super cosy at the same time. Just went for my wife's birthday. The staff were so helpful and polite. We were asked if we wanted pre drinks out side to enjoy the view before eating. The food , while expensive, was delicious. The chicken pie was great very theatrical and they served the contents into a pastry bowl!. Never felt rushed to leave at any time and they brought out a complimentary dessert with a candle for my wife. Deserves 5 stars without a doubt.

We love dining at Donovans. It never disappoints but always get better with each visit. The decor, ambience and setting is perfect. The waiters/waitresses are always professional, friendly and offer great service. Its nice to start with a reasonably priced coctail. We couldn't fault any of our meals. All the portion sizes are generous. The fish was beautiful, seafood linguini was delicious and the eye fillet was spot on. We always oder a few sides but some meals do come with potatoes/salad so always good to ask. The deserts are a must. Chocolate fondant is the best and the Bombe alaska was amazing. Large enough to share with 4 if you order others to share. Overall we highly recommend and you will leave satisfied and want to go back.

This is one of my favourite restaurants for a nice outing in Melbourne. Set by scenic St. Kilda beach foreshore, the restaurant feels like a comfortable but classy villa with warm and inviting decor. The service is impeccable and the vibe is friendly and respectable. You can wear casual clothes or be dressed up to the nines, either way you will feel at home. The wine list is exceptional and the food cooked to perfection. I can't recommend it enough.

Donovan's is like seeing an old, good friend: deeply satisfying, completely relaxing, always enjoyable. The autumn menu is wonderful, and we loved the beetroot-gin-trout crudo entreé, the whole baby snapper, the charcoal leader prawns, the scallops, the oysters, the sweet potato, and the green apple soufflé - accompanied by excellent classic Margaritas. The service was especially attentive (thank you for providing back pillows and foot rest for my elderly Mum), and the views calming. We love Donovan's, like an old friend.

Been to Donovan a few times and last time I went I didn’t quite enjoy the food as much. However I booked the restaurant again this summer and the food quality has gone up a lot comparing to 1.5 years ago. I pretty much loved every single dishes I’ve ordered. Lamb shoulder for two is with a very decent portion and cured kingfish is very nice as an entree. My recommendation is to book the early dinner session at 6pm, then when you finish your main around 7.30 go to the outdoor area to have you dessert and enjoy the sunset (in summer :) )

We wouldn't' miss the opportunity to have a sunset dinner here every time we visit our family in Melbourne from the UK. The location is simply sensational overlooking the beach and perfect for a sunset and people gazing on the promenade. In the 20 years we've been coming here, the food never disappoints matched with impeccable friendly service and the best hosts. You're always in for an epicurean feast when coming to Donovans! Celebrated my birthday here, my partner and I got the salmon for entree and the t-bone and eye fillet for mains and the famous bombe Alaska for dessert. The steak was good, but I have had better at other places in Melbourne. The highlight for me was the entree, the salmon was fresh and tasty! The bombe Alaska is delicious, but it's huge, even for two people!

Don't order the salmon I felt sick it was disgusting! Oysters were not great. In fact food is ordinary which is a shame as service is first class. Waiters are friendly, knowledgeable, fast and attentive. Could never fault the service. Sadly it falls on the chefs which is unfortunate. Hopefully owner gets better chefs. It may have already improved by now. I have been 7 times at least for work functions and a few birthdays, unable to afford this beautiful restaurant more than 3 stars unfortunately.

Donovans is in a nice location, it would have been nice to come in the day in hindsight, as it's right near the beach, but it was still a lovely atmosphere nonetheless! Donovan's has been feeding the hungry hordes of Melburnian's for over 22 years. Having eaten there on Saturday evening it is easy to see why it keeps going and going. Attentive and friendly service. And food to die for. The hardest choice of the evening is choosing what to have from the excellent menu. I can heartliy recommend the goats cheese souffle and seafood linguine for main. De-li-cious.

After a mediocre visit to Donovan’s, we came back for a second visit after Donovan’s kindly invited us back for a second chance. I have to say that my second visit was a vast improvement. I had the Porterhouse Steak special and it is undoubtedly the moistest steak I’ve had. For dessert, I had the Milk Chocolate Tart which was served with a beautiful blueberry jam. Has to be the best cake I’ve had in a while. The only thing that let the meal down was a passion fruit-mint non-alcoholic drink I had which was too acidic for my liking. Other than that, Donovan’s gave us a substantial discount to rectify the past visit which most restaurants wouldn’t do and after going off of steak for so long, my confidence in good quality steak has finally been rectified. Finally, something has to be said about the impeccably well trained staff. I was served by a lady that was so naturally cordial and welcome that it felt honest and inviting in terms of asking about the food and ingredients used.

Located on the foreshore of St. Kilda beach, the view from this place in combination with their delicious food is what makes any meal at Donovan's an amazing experience. Although, the place is little expensive. I would recommend the people, who will be trying this place for the first time, to take a look at the prices before heading there. On the other hand, the food is delicious and the service is good. All of it together, with a good view, is something that I would prefer for spending a delightful evening in a high end restaurant.

It was wonderful to return after a few years and since the rebuild post fire. The place looks incredible and the private room we had was amazing, looking straight out onto the beach. The sunset is always a winner as you enjoy a pre-dinner drink on the outside patio. From the moment we arrived the two ladies (Julie and Jameson I think? Forgive me ladies if I have that wrong) offered sensational service - often in a large group you can struggle to get a drink in some places, but these two were so attentive. Much appreciated! The food was excellent - particularly the selection of starters which were so generous we didn’t really need mains! Everything was perfect for our party of 26. Everyone had a terrific night and all loved the ambience, food and service. Thank you also for allowing me to have the chicken pie! (Being a large group it was a set menu). The pie still lives up to its legendary status! Make sure you try Donovan’s - if it’s a romantic dinner for two or a large group you will be thrilled either way. If there was a 7 star button I would have clicked it!

After eating at Donovans today post lockdown with some dear friends I re-alised what treasures we have in Melbourne and this restaurant is now on my treasured list. Charles the function manager was so impressive- so organised and accommodating to our needs including making changes to menus for dietary requirements. We went for our work Xmas break up lunch and we just can’t understand why this restaurant gets so many good reviews.... As a Melbournite I get to try so many amazing restaurants and this is really not worth the money they charge. The $65 T Bone steak was a joke. It was thin and chewy and really just an insult - might expect it at a local pub for $20 certainly not $65 😱. Another of us ordered the Porterhouse and it came under cooked and tepid inside. The “House Chips” were also a disappointment, we thought ooow, chips made by a top Melbourne restaurant aught to be really good - bowl of fat fried chat potatoes. Sorry, if I order chips I expect chips not fat roast potatoes, just bizarre really. The entrees were not too bad and the lamb loin was nice but two small medallions do not make a main meal guys. If the prices were reduced to that of a standard good restaurant then maybe but at these prices, sorry we won’t be back. Credit where credit is due.

Some may say that this is a Nice place to go when the weathers great. However, my recent visit was in the company of an associate. I got the impression that they owner and staff felt that they were some sort of class act. Let me say, I have been to much better places that had a better selection of dishes that also had more than a sardine and a piece of lettuce on the plate, and didn't cost half a weeks salary. Extremely disappointed!

Highlights are the starters and dessert. Both are large enough to be a main so you'll struggle to fit in three courses. Be careful with the first sitting you will be moved on quickly if you eat slowly. Recommend chicken pie and Bombalaska, both classics for a reason.

I have been coming to Donovans for over 15 years and I have to say, the ambiance is still on point, as well as the service. However, the food has definitely declined. Lack of choice and variety as well as very high prices for what you get is disappointing. We had the crab risotto and we found it to be very rich and overwhelmed with tomato... could hardly taste the crab. We were also put next to the toilet entry when I booked 3 weeks ago telling them it’s my husbands birthday. Again, if you are paying $200 for 1 entree, 1 main, 2 desserts and 4 glasses of house wine, we expected to be seated in a nicer area. So overall, we still love the feel of the place and service, however the menu really needs to be looked at!

Last minute decision on our wedding anniversary. Thought we'd have no hope getting in. The waiter who greeted us said they were full, but would ask. The "gods must have been smiling on us". Started with Tasmanian oysters, served at a perfect temperature. My wife had the lamb. Perfectly cooked with wonderful sauces and vegetables. I had very yummy grilled prawns. Great food, poor service. Upon entering the hostess asked if we had seen their menu. No...but we had read reviews. We looked at the menu but I couldn’t help but wonder did she think my boyfriend and I (late twenties, on holiday) couldn’t afford the prices? Looking at another review here I was right. We were dressed in casual clothes, a dress, leggings, and jackets and about 30% of the restaurant patrons were in t-shirts, etc. After all, it’s next to a beach. We certainly could afford it and we tipped. The food was tasty and fresh, so 3 stars is fair. However they lost my hat. The waitress offered to take my hat and put it on a shelf. Should not have agreed. It was evening time and I didn’t remember until the next day that she never brought it back. Flight the next day, no time to go back for it.

I was referred to go to Donovan's from a friend as he swore by it. My first impressions was wow this is a nice venue. At the entrance they have some historic st Kilda sea bath turnstiles which adds that touch of nostalgia. We went on a Tuesday night and it was not overly busy and managed to have a few pre dinner wines by the fire place. Nothing beats the smell and heat from a real open fire place opposed to the gas styles. This set the tone for the remainder of the night. A very homely feel but also a very classy touch. Definitely not a first tinder date spot but somewhere you want to take some one special. We shared the lamb shoulder and highly recommend it.

Perhaps Donovan's is meant to be visited during day time when the sea view can be seen. The menu was limited. The place was nearly empty except for another party. We had a party of twelve and after studying the menu we were told that the duck was off. The coffee soufflé was nice but not extra-ordinary and we have had better. There are many restaurants in Melbourne that could serve better meals. My filet which I requested medium to well done, was served showing blood. The service was good and prompt but it was a Sunday and not too busy. I think for the price Donovan's needs to pick up their game.
