Comments of Fancy Hank's Barbecue Restaurant

We went to Fancy Hanks a few weekends ago for the first time, we ordered the Pitmaster BBQ Platter and got:
🥚 Deviled Eggs
🥜 Mixed Nuts
🥩 Beef Briskets
🍗 Buffalo Wings
🍗 Fried Chicken
🍞 Corn Bread
🍟 Seasoned Chips
🥗 Coleslaw
Everything was great, full of flavor, good portions and cooked perfectly! The beef brisket was incredibly tender and fell apart so easily with just a touch. The wings were our favorite for sure! Also, the corn bread was amazing & we’re still daydreaming about it. We 100% recommend you to try their platter 😋
The only downside was the restaurant space itself. We went there on a somewhat hot day and unfortunately they only have two wind pipes which weren’t really helping nor cool. I was struggling with the heat so we had to get the food to go and went home (luckily we live close-by!). So our recommendation is either get a takeaway or wait to dine in until the weather cools down! ❄️

Good quality and tender as hell brisket but I think the price was abit steep for what you get. Did I say I Was a massive fan of the brisket! found the pork a tad dry but was still tasty. The wings where deelish. I'd just say the major draw back is the limited menu and how your kinda forced to choose the platters and how expensive it is pp

Massive throwback to my meal here where the food is amazing and the vibe is fantastic. A lovely casual and fun spot to gorge yourself silly on meat and more meat. The super tender and meaty brisket and pulled pork are the highlights, as were the corn bread, buffalo wings, corn and chedder hash brown and corn ribs. Flavours are on point and flawless execution. Can't fault anything here, it's no wonder this place is my go-to for American BBQ.
A. J. (.
Pretty tasty food with friendly waiters. The drinks are well made and everything is presented nicely.
My only complaint is that our friends had already finished their mains before we received ours.
Would recommend if you like brisket and pulled pork. Definitely worth ordering the wings with pineapple Carolina reaper sauce, so delicious!
V. S.
Fantastic food!! I could eat that every night. It’s good value too. We dined early in a lovely table near the window. It was quite at that time. I didn’t rate the décor … it was a bit blah. Staff were friendly and attentive. A great experience!
I. M.
Food spreads were tasty. The wings were better when I last tried them at vic market location. Service was a big let down. Not busy slow service. Paid on mobile in the restaurant and waited just over 45mins until all the food was received. This is after asking where the food was..overall good food, but based on my experience, unlikely I'll go again.

Definitely the best American-style barbecue restaurant in Melbourne. The corn bread is impossibly moist and tasty, the chicken wings are perfectly spicy, the pulled pork is juicy and everything we've had from the menu is just top-notch.
Not really the best option if you're watching your calories, but this is one hell of a cheat meal 🤤
M. P.
I absolutely loved this place. The staff were very friendly and helpful and their food and drinks were delicious. The Brisket and pulled pork were super juicy and full of flavour and their sides were spot on. I'm not usually a big fan of coleslaw or corn bread but these were great. Will definitely be coming back for more.

It was a hot day in the city and I really wanted to try Fancy Hanks. It’s been on my list for ages. I walked all the way across town and turned up sweaty. A quick splash of water and I was ready to go. I ordered devilled egg, corn and cheddar hash browns, smoked brisket with burnt ends and burnt carrots. Everything was perfect except the brisket flat was pretty dry and tough (the point was beautiful).
The staff were attentive and friendly. The atmosphere was pretty great for a 2pm weekday lunch but the music helped a lot.
M.
We had such a good date night here. This was the premium bbq set which included deviled eggs, pickles, chicken wings, beef brisket, pulled pork, cornbread, fries, beans, coleslaw. So much food. Great value, vibe and service. And the best beef brisket we’ve had 🤤
D. C.
Staff are friendly but can be a little confronting when they explain the menu. You have to order from the table for both food and drinks using a QR code which is ok, but it does make you feel like you are doing some of the work. It would be good if staff came over more and engaged with the table.
The food was good. The brisket was cut a little thick to my liking which gave it a bit more of a dry profile and required some sauce to help get back that juicy feeling. I think if the slices where half the size it would retain more moisture. Great flavour, the corn bread was soft and moist and I wish we had ordered more. Overall a good bbq joint in the CBD.
V. A.
I loved the meat! Smoked meat and corn bread were simply the best!
I wasn't a fan of the chicken wings and the pickled veggies, but I guess they are not for everyone!
The staff members were very friendly!
Thank you 😊
J.
We had the $52 pp set. The food was quality and quantity for what you pay. We started with deviled eggs which were delicious and fresh. Next, was buffalo wings which was the best I've ever had. They were not to strong in sauce so was really enjoyable to eat. Then, our brisket, cheese kranksy, pulled pork, cornbread, fries and coleslaw arrived. WOW. Absolutely delicious, the meat had a subtle smokey flavour and was not dry. I really liked that the sauces were kept on the side so that you could add more or less. The service was great and drinks aswell. Will definitely be back!
S. D.
Food was delicious, great customer service and the cocktails were beautiful. The decor was great also, really stuck to the theme of an American BBQ restaurant plus, the smoked meat was to die for 👌🏻 All round a lovely dining experience!
D. B.
Thanks for a great feed @Fancy Hanks!
🍴Food: food was brilliant 👌
1. Blooming onion was my favourite, cooked well and seasoning was magnificent.
2. Fried chicken was awesome.
💰 Price is expensive, but wasn't disappointed.
🍽 Cool steakhouse vibe.
📝 booking was easy and ordering food made simple on a phone app.
🤵 Staff were generally pretty friendly.
Tips from your local guide:
1. Go on an empty tummy.
2. Get the blooming onion.
3. Make sure your eyes are not as big as your tummy.
P. S.
Scrumptiously marinated chicken wings, and melt in the mouth pulled pork and brisket. Good cornbread.
X. A. C.
I had a wonderful dinner. All delicious and with very particular flavors. The smoked meat in their oven is delightful. The place is large and cozy with good street views. The staff is attentive at all times, very professional, they have treated me wonderfully. Not suitable for gluttons.
B. R.
Very nice food! Pulled pork was the best meat, only slightly before the brisket then sausages. All the sides delicious, especially the fried cauliflower and Mac and cheese! Devilled eggs were very nice but expensive! Overall very tasty and enjoyable dinner, left you full but wanting more of the flavours! Take note that inside the restaurant can get very loud when full (hard to talk to someone across from you) so if that's something that bothers you maybe avoid a peak time. Keen to go again!!
H. L.
Had the fried corn for appetisers and it was the best dish out of all we ordered. The brisket was a tad dry than we would've liked. Good place to go for dinner and drinks with a group as the dishes were all shared and good selection of drinks as well.
A. S.
Fancy Hanks is certainly some of the best Southern Style barbeque that you can get in Melbourne. The ribs feel of the bones, the brisket melted in your month. All with that delicious smokey flavour.
The space is also great, big and comfortable, filled with light. The staff were excellent and accommodating.
J. H.
Delicious! Great wholesome American barbecue with a twist. We had the brisket and the chicken, if you have to choose get the chicken. So tender and delicious, the combination of creamed corn and side of gravy was heavenly.
M. K.
Wonderful staff and great environment. I've tried most things on the menu - from the chicken and the lamb to the chips and other sides. The brisket though is where Fancy Hanks' really shines: this is one of the best places for brisket in Melbourne. Unfortunately, it comes at a price that some may not consider affordable for frequent visits. Otherwise, definitely recommend.
A. M.
A smokehouse with a great environment and taste. I came here looking for a casual dining restaurant that had 1 simple thing - meat. Hanks didn't disappoint. We had the chicken and pork ribs, and they were both amazing. The ribs were on the sweet and salty side, and the chicken was beautifully prepared. The sides accompanying the food worked very well with the dish, and there was attention to detail (particularly with presentation and garnish). We might have ordered a bit too much, but that didn't stop me from trying to finish everything. The environment was also great, will definitely be back
C. B.
FANTASTIC FANCY HANKS!! 🍖🍖
Organised to come here for a birthday and these guys didnt let down. We trued the set menu and Everything was very tasty!! The staff were extremely patient with us as we were a lil loud and roudy and were extremely responsible when it came to service of alcohol. Very impressed.
I will definitely be back in a more intimate setting to taste more of what was on off.
Expect city prices. But you get the best quality.
Easy to find.
City parking.
Would definitely recommend and return.
Congrats to the team here you do great work 👌👏👏👏👏😋
K. E.
Good place to catch up with friends at the end of the working week. Nice atmosphere with most tables taken. Service was excellent, cocktails were good as was the food.
S. C.
Possibly the best American BBQ in Melbourne. The biscuits were super buttery & flakey. The brisket was great, really great. The chicken was magnificent & not many other BBQ places offer it or do it well, so I would recommend ordering the smoky, juicy treat. Really nice restaurant, we were lucky to sit at the window on a sunny evening.
S. G.
Brisket sandwich was yum, but could benefit from some nicer bread. Disappointed by the chips, and the garlic aioli was very very garlicky. Appreciated being able to pay on the online menu rather than fussing with split bills. Nice space and ambience, good service.
S. R.
Loved the vegetarian barbecue. Usually restaurants with meat menu have a boring vegetarian menu. But I liked their vegetarian cuisine.
M. B. M.
great location, great retro fitout, grear space but not so great beef brikset sandwich. meat was drop dead tender but brioche didn't do any justice to the meat, it tasted cheap and dry. if american sandwich, why is it served bone dry instead being gooey, drippy , sloppy?
however, couldn't fault service, staff was most helpful and friendly.
J. B.
Great food, great service, great vibe. Highly recommended for anyone who likes BBQ or a great restaurant experience. Super friendly and efficient wait staff who looked after our group beautifully. Will be back.
a. b.
If you like food you need to go here...
If you like meat you absolutely need to go here!
Best corn bread I've ever tasted.
Incredible brisket!
I didn't want to stop eating!
Great staff, really good atmosphere.
A must go to when in Melbourne.
B. M.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Loved it

When you start a food tour, showcasing the best that Melbourne has to offer, you take them to the best American Smoked Styled cooking – Fancy Hank’s. Having moved from outside the Queen Victoria Market recently, I couldn’t wait to try out their offering. And my oh my, it did not disappoint.
Located right next door to Grand Trailer Park Taverna, you would wonder why? Why do people get so spoilt for choice. Like really? They already have the Grand Trailer Park right next door…..breathe Nige Breathe!
Fancy Hank’s is an American styled smoked BBQ cooking and one that is worthy of the mantle of best restaurant in Melbourne. In this setting you get to choose from a fixed lunch menu option or go for your choice of meats (chicken/beef/Pork) and truth be told, you would be a fool to choose chicken from here. Yes it’s amazing. Yes, you can enjoy it but why would you go to a heavenly places like this to eat chicken. I don’t judge you. I’m just very disappointed.
Kicking of The Domestic Traveller food tours for my good bud Louis – we chose the platters of Pork Shoulder, Beef Brisket, Iceberg Lettuce wedges in Blue Cheese sauce and BBQ flavoured chips.
How do I put this? Hallelujah!!
The meat was tender and melted in your mouth. The Pork Shoulder was phenomenal that has it’s flavour infused all through itself. The marble on the beef brisket was beyond expectation and just too damn good. I could go into details but that would be doing the meal an injustice. Oh and the onions that came with it? Good gawd I don’t know how they managed to pull that off. Succulent and fried yet soft. And the sliced pickles were so fresh that you come to realise that there is a party in your mouth and you were invited.
Now I for one don’t make friends with salad. I eat it because I need to but you won’t find me going out of my way to do this. When it came time to consume the lettuce, the blue cheese sauce saved the day. Plus they cut the lettuce in wedges. Literal wedges. I dunno. It just made sense.
And the BBQ flavoured chips? I knew that I would have to workout. I was ok with that. To top this off? Their service is so close to perfection that I think some of the other more ‘prestigious’ restaurants need to pick up and emulate. Our hostess gave good advice and was genuinely interested in what we had to say and also gave us some good photography advice!
The icing on the cake ? The owner, Darra, saw us post on Instagram and spoke to us. Since when does a restaurant owner in the big city, come around to say thanks? Well, Darra. Thank you. For opening an amazing restaurant in Melbourne. And for doing what you do best!
You have a raving fan here and now one across the sea.
S. S.
It was good food, a little expensive when it comes to portion sizing. It wasnt overly busy but we didnt get drinks until we had almost finished the meal (after having to remind waitress)
A. T.
Amazing food, pretty expensive but it's all top quality. Definitely awesome for large groups as dishes such as ribs really need to be shared with a few people.
R. G.
Excellent service and food. We had the croquets, octopus, brisket, Mac n cheese, and fries. Everything was amazing, cooked to perfection and full of flavour. Food came out quickly and the staff were happy to answer questions and give suggestions. Highly recommend trying Fancy Hanks out.
J. B.
Ok experience. The side plates for our sharing board were brought out well before the meat. Not sure if there was an issue in the kitchen but nothing was communicated to us. Beef wasn’t great, didn’t have much flavour. The pulled pork was much better and went great with the pickles. Don’t think I would hurry back to try it again though
S. C.
Comparable to some of the great BBQ places in USA that we went to. Meat was soft and tender, Beef had a great bark to it, attention to detail to sides was awesome and delivered on flavour. We had the plate for 2 with pork and brisket which was a lot of food, but so worth it. Absolutely drool worthy.
A. N.
The fat rendering on the beef brisket was to die for, with a nice coating of peppery dry rub and tender meat. The pork ribs were a bit too dry for our liking, and I found it to be a tad bit on the salty side. The meat was still quite tender though.
M.
Was kind of expecting this place to have a better selection of meat. Mostly burgers and other stodgy bits unfortunately, the few pieces of meat you could order we're unfortunately tasted quite old or too sweet, and all came with a side of some sweet brown bbq sauce. I know some people love sugary brown bbq sauce, but it's generally used to mask poorly done meat in my experience, which was a shame seeing as some of the meat would have been great if it tasted fresher and wasn't as sweet. Might try again in the future just in case they were having an off day for whatever reason, but if it's the same, probably wouldn't return. Staff were friendly and accommodating, and resturant had a nice feel in the lovely old building it was in.
EDIT: In response to the reply, there was nothing that was sold out or 'run out' of, there was literally not that much to order that wasn't a burger, chips, battered or sweet. Being a BBQ place I'd expect to be able to get some meat on it's own, and from memory there was only three options, the brisket (which was partly sweet), the pork (the pulled port was sweet) and the chicken (which was sold out but also battered in part from what I understand, so I wouldn't have ordered this). - Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I'd love to be able to buy some meat that isn't battered, glazed or soaked in sugar. If it's a good quality smoke, you don't need to cover it in sugar or carbs.
K. C.
Where ever I travel overseas I always visit the best place for bbq pork ribs in that city. For Melbourne, that’s got to be Fancy Hanks. Probably one of my top 3 world wide. Smokey flavour and Alabama white sauce is intoxicating
D. S.
Good food, quick service, friendly staff 👌👌
Buffalo wings were hot but not mouth burning, perfect 👌👌
K. L.
Food was fantastic, the pork ribs are highly recommended. 👌 service was great too, very friendly staff members and didn't wait long for food either.
E. S.
Had an awesome time the other day at fancy Hank's, we took the chefs Grill selection and were not disappointed! Amazing brisket! And the Pulled pork... The mac and cheese 😍 down to the coleslaw.. Really top experience....
Only thing-even though it came out really funny-was when asking for the bill and recieving another beer 😅....than it took a while again before we could grab their attention to re-ask for it...
But other than that all of us had a great time in our chilled lunch! Will definitely be back!
J. C.
Busy place and for a good reason! The food is phenomenal! And we were told they have the largest smoker in the southern hemisphere, which is impressive. Attentive but not overly present staff and the menu was SO GOOD! Will absolutely be back. A lot.
P. P.
Super delicious! The smoked sausage is to die for in my opinion and the rest of the food was top quality too. Pleasant setting in an old ball room and friendly staff!👍
H. T.
It was good. But the prices are steep. As in really steep. Small dishes are around $15 (quite small). Main dishes are around $25 to $30 (quite small as well). The waiter recommended us to take 2 small dishes and 1 main dish each. We ordered 2 small and 2 large dishes with 2 beers. It cost us $100. We didn't order the pork ribs as it would cost $10/100g and the min weight was 0.5kg on that day we visited.
S. A. K.
The food is amazing you cannot not try their porks ribs and corn ribs, went there during Valentine's day and had their amazing Peach pie which I got to say, Out of this world! The waiters and waitresses are so amazing and thoughtful (like they could read minds) 👍👍👍
J. H.
Ordered a portion of 600g ribs, cornbread, fried cauliflower and grilled octopus for 2. found the sides were more tasty than the ribs .
Cornbread was a very pleasant surprise at the recommendation of our server. :)
Great place w tasty food overall !
M. M.
The corn bread was the highlight, dodnt get to try the corn ribs but looked really good
H. R.
Great service and location. Lovely setup. The brisket was one of the nicest pieces of meat I have ever eaten in my whole life.
A. I. “. I. C. C.
Good atmosphere, great food, some of the staff were great and friendly. Good place to go if you like some wicked barbecue american style.
L. W.
Delicious and definitely fancy bbq, great attentive service, really enjoy the smokiness or the mushroom and beetroot paired with goats cheese. Chicken, devilled eggs, sausage, all amazing. Staff even helped me carry the pram down the stairs. All in all a great father's Day meal that I'd recommend to anyone.
G. B.
Lovely staff, tasty food, quick service and all round good vibes!!! Come a long way from the MMW pop up at the old Argos newspaper building! Nice one hank! Photo: lifting the Hanks smoker up to level 2 back in 2012!
N. G.
Soo delicious! Its a bit pricey for what it is, but the food is worth it. Been here twice now and both times it has not disappointed me :)
S. W.
Had the Pitmaster’s Selection, a great dinner experience. While the meats were great (especially the pulled pork), the sides were a stand out. Cornbread, beans and biscuit were better than any I’ve had in the US. Proportion wise I think there was too much to the sides and the meal would have benefitted from slightly larger meat portions - it’s all about the meats after all....
Y. H. (.
Nice area for dining with family friend and with your better half. Easy way to order. Price very impressive.
F. G.
Still a fantastic restaurant, great staff, modern ordering system which is fantastic as well. Food was delicious and it's great with the take away sauce
G. B.
Loved the idea of a US styled smokehouse restaurant. FH did it for me! Delish meat, awesome sides and the location is perf. Only criticism was the temp inside to restaurant on a cold, blowy day made the visit uncomfortable. Otherwise, food and bev was spot on.
T. A. J. G.
Chips taste fantastic! The sauce cost extra though. Egg plant sandwich is tasty, may be the cheese is on a strong side of the scale.
Have restrooms.
P. R.
Great food although not the friendliest service. We had some craft beer that was out of date by 6 months
F. S.
Great range of vegan/veg options for the non-meat eaters. The yams in the vegan main were the most delicious thing ever. Also highly rate the burnt carrots and corn ribs. I loved the atmosphere and staff were friendly and efficient.
A. M.
Great food, didn't book but they squeezed us on to the bar. Worked out for the better, staff were great and very attentive, made the night more enjoyable. The meats and cornbread to die for.
P. F.
Great atmosphere. A little bit too loud sometimes but overall great experience with amazing flavours of food and great choices of drinks
N. M.
Definitely recommend the romaine salad, bbq brisket and pulled pork.
Cauliflower was forgettable and the biscuit was on the small side
G.
Fantastic BBQ, great service
The fried chicken is outstanding. This is now my #1 fried chicken in Melbourne. Great moist buttermilk brined meat and ULTRA crunchy skin with a great light dry seasoning which reminded me of the dry seasonings I had in Korean. Absolute must order.
Brisket was very good for Australia but still searching for something that holds a candle to the best of Texas.
Pork ribs were good but not a stand out.
A. B.
Had the family pack for 4. Absolutely sensational quality and value. Cannot wait until reopening and getting back to the restaurant. Well done guys.
W. A.
Awesome food! My wife and I absolutely loved it. Maybe turn the AC on though.lol..
D. T.
Lovely place with great food and great service. The $50/pax taster is delicious and filling. However, I personally found the pulled pork on the dry side. Expect to pay $20+ for decent a filling (although you can find various options for less).
H. P.
That was really great. Atmosphere, staff and of course short-ribs. I just can’t point to anything that was not good - ribs have been cooked a little bit longer that was expected, but I was offered a complimentary devil egg for that. Definitely recommended.
A. T.
Good environment for a big or small group, got the set menu and it was plenty of food for our group.
W. P.
Amazing Bar-b-q. Enjoyed every bit of it. Staff was amazing to deal with. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
E. A.
Yum yum what a feast! All the meats were delicious but the sides omg so good! Normally ignored the sides here were the highlight of the meal, potato salad, coleslaw, buffalo cauliflower etc too delicious 🤤
J. G.
Brisket was nice, but could've been even juicier.
Asian coleslaw was also very nice, but felt out of place alongside everything else.
Nice vibes all round.
P. W.
Great BBQ joint with nice beers and a good selection of bourbon
A.
American BBQ with a slight Australian twist. Ordered a rack of BBQ Lamb, mac and cheese, and jalapeño cornbread. Cornbread itself was good, but the jalapeño spread I thought was not as good as advertised.
B.
Absolutely awesome little find. Completely by accident but so glad we walked past. The pulled pork was some of the best and the melt in your mouth brisket was divine. Highly recommended.
R. H.
Had some food and drinks with good friends in Sydney. Food was amazing. Nice staff, nice atmosphere.
N. P.
Food was a 3.5 and service was a 3. They messed up our order and there was no BBQ sauce at the table (at a BBQ place?!l) But the beef was tender and flavourful and you have to get the jalapeno cornbread which was the highlight of the meal!
D. B.
Yeah it was pretty awesome, had a great feed, they definitely don't skimp on the food either, if you think you can eat that 50 dollar deal you better be real hungry.
Went upstairs to the rooftop bar afterwards. The staff in both the bar and restaurant were super friendly.
L. P.
Fancy Hank's is a class act and food is excellent.
Ordered takeaway that DoorDash left to go cold. Called the restaurant and offered to pick it up. The restaurant re-made the order hot and fresh and even threw in some bonus items. Thanks Fancy Hank's!
E. H.
Most delicious brisket and pulled pork in Melbourne. Great food and service, but fyi no Mac and cheese at lunch.
P. E. N.
Holy hecking corn hole that corn bread transcended the earth and gave my friend Dirk the fat head. He had never had corn bread before but two bites in he’s torn off his shirt and said “What? How.”. This place had amazing meats and even better treats. I bloody loved it.
N. M.
Very nice food! Delicious fried eggplant sandwich, lovely staff. I love it! Thanks for giveaways! I'll definitely go back again.
T. S.
Went for the feed me sharing meal.
Great flavours and portions for the price, usually Id be able to eat the amount given, but it was so satisfying and filling!
The sides that come with it are amazing!
C. S.
Pictured is the beef brisket (200gr), BBQ fries with queso, cornbread with jalapeno spread, smoked eggplant, and mac and cheese.
Would definitely recommend.
Will definitely return.
C. H. (.
Amazing food, must say thanks to the hostess who managed to fit us in the packed place, and to the no shows who missed out on the best BBQd meat ever. It was reasonably priced and the staff were friendly and informed.
C. S.
Well loved the ambience but the food over priced. Don't think I've ever said that before.
A. B.
The food was awesome. The drinks were great. We had a drink each, the middle platter and a few starters. Spent $150 for 2 of us and we're stuffed. Brought the leftovers home. Loved the sauces too.
T. R.
Not bad. Not outstanding. The pulled pork burger was great. Small but great. Potatoe salad side was a bit disappointing as potatoes weren’t cooked properly. Good service
J. F.
It was overall, okay. It gets quite loud, especially on weekends. We ordered three meals, a few glasses of wine, and some onion rings. For 3 people, it cost us 200 dollars, I wouldn't say it was worth the money.
The meat was delicious and tender, overall an alright place to go out if you are happy to make some compromises, probably a 3.5 out of 5.
B. A.
Loveliest staff I have ever experienced!! And food and sauces absolutely DELICIOUS!! Thank you Fancy Hanks
c.
Pretty mediocre BBQ for the price unfortunately. I know they are meant to be “burnt” ends but what I ate was absolutely cooked to death, no moisture left in the meat and barely edible. More akin to dog treats. Brisket ok, but I’ve had better at other BBQ places.
D. A.
Sensational food and atmosphere. Service is great now that you can order food and drink via your phone, so quick and efficient.
H. T.
We came for one of Fancy Hanks special nights, Feast Of The Barrell II which is a celebration of whisky, beer and BBQ. A fabulous experience and the food was delicious.
A. J. (.
Outstanding bbq and service in a fun, full on buzzing restaurant. Great fun.
G. C. (.
First time I went there the food was fantastic. Took a friend there and had the same dish again but it was undercooked and the portion size was much smaller. Staff aren't friendly/enthusiastic at all. Felt like we were a burden to serve rather than valued customers. Disappointed and won't be going back :(
J. S.
One of the best bbq restaurants around with amazingly friendly and helpful staff. Visited a few times now, the lamb ribs, beef brisket and biscuit are amazing!
J. S.
Great BBQ joint in the middle of Melbourne.
Was very happy with the brisket and corn bread. Plenty of beers to choose from as well.
C. C.
A bit expensive for BBQ, but I think it's worth it. I ordered the brisket and the cornbread. Both were delicious and had that extra something that wasn't something I could do at home. Combined, the two dishes were more than enough food for a meal. I also enjoyed a cocktail, though I can't remember which one. As a solo traveller, Fancy Hank's was absolutely fine, but I would think it's better with a group so you can order several mains and sides to try different things. What made my dining experience at Fancy Hank's the best, though, was that even though the kitchen had flooded and patrons were asked to leave, the staff were very patient and gracious AND offered long-forgotten umbrellas from the lost and found to us as the downpour continued outside. I wish I could have had more time for another cocktail and maybe dessert. If I ever make my way back to Melbourne, I'll be coming back!
P. F.
American BBQ, delicious meats, friendly service, busy place

Recommend the pulled pork and both sets of sausages. Brisket was nice but the dry rub on the ribs were too salty. A
K. M.
Have been a patron of Fancy Hank's for a while now. Having grown up in the US, it's my go-to for CBD based bbq and smoked cuisine. I tend to stick to the sandwiches which are always 100% (pulled pork and meatloaf = YUM!). However, tried the ribs on my most recent visit (Jan 2021) and was disappointed. Very chewy and hardly any meat; that's simply not how ribs should be done. Also let down by the corn bread; the smoked apple cream does not go with the cornbread. Stick to a savoury corn bread with whipped butter (jalapenos optional). Again, a pretty tasty offering but in future I'll stick to what I know Fancy Hanks does best.

Terrific flavours, comfortable space, good booze pairings, go here now if you're a low n slow fan
T. G.
Decent food and atmosphere. Group was over charged but we did book for more than arrived so that’s fair I suppose. Absolutely no wheel chair access.
P. L.
Nice service but more than half hour for waiting for first dish. Price is quite high
D. T.
Food was good and service was fantastic. A bit noisy and food was served very quickly. The beef short ribs was very nice. The spices was a bit salty but it was very fragrant and tender. The beef brisket was nice. Can be a little bit more tender but it was flavourful. Chicken wing had a nice smokey bbq small to it. A bit spicy even though it was call sweet and sour.
H. H. B.
Food are good but quite a long wait and can also be expensive. But they have a nice dining experience.
C. G.
Had an early dinner on Sunday. Service was quite good and food was delicious. Definitely worth checking out if you like BBQ.
Some people say it is expensive but considering other BBQ places I've been in Melbourne I think pricing is reasonable.
My brisket was really good, although I did get a very fatty piece so had to leave some on the plate.
They charge a 10% fee on Sunday's, which I find odd, but in fairness it is well advertised online and on the menu.
I'll be back for more.

Delicious food, friendly staff, great view of the street below from the window seats.
I. O.
Beautiful meat and the balance achieved from all the sides and the use of ingredients put together is beautiful... The peach ice cream with bourbon salted caramel with the sweet potato crisp garnish is to die for...
Y.
Great food, amazing staff and relaxed atmosphere!
G. P.
Good food, well priced and really good customer service. Had the country style ribs which were fantastic and the chicken wings as an entree along with two cocktails spent 60 odd dollars.
A. H.
Food was good, but the menu was somewhat limiting in that you can only get a small selection of sides with their meats and need to order the really good sides separately which would make it too much food. Didn't enjoy the bbq sauce with the brisket at all but loved the Cubana sandwich.
A. R.
The pittmaster set menu for 2 is the ideal meal to experience the amazing beef brisket and the pulled pork, complimented excellently by pickles, pickled onions and the legendary BBQ and Coffee+Molassses sauces
S. J.
Had a delicious meal last night! Ribs were tender, and the sauce was great. The host (I think her name was Matilda) was super accommodating and worked to make us feel welcome, particularly appreciated as we didn't have a booking. Overall, the service was great - will definitely be coming back.
F. H.
I've always knew I had a very unique name and was also told so as well. Searching it up and your restaurant came across. Looks like I have to pay you a visit Fancy Hank's BBQ restaurant. Also I'm a great cook as well. You guys are only missing my middle name. WOW. SO FANCY 😉.

We went here for our Valentine’s Day dinner. We had the brisket, corn bread and croquettes. The food came out fast, meat was falling apart and tender, love the corn bread but the croquettes were only ok. The bbq sauce was tasty that comes with the meat, want to come back to try the other meats and sides as overall really enjoyed the food plus has a great atmosphere!
R. L.
Went here for my Mother-In Law's 70th and had a great evening. The food was amazing (loved the corn bread - first time l had tried it) and plentiful. So much so, we had plenty of leftovers. Staff were amazing, friendly and gave us eco-friendly containers to take the leftovers, which tasted just as great the following night. Great family place to go celebrate big events - we'll be back.
J. B.
We discovered Fancy Hank's by accident, but it was serendipitous. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food so, so tasty.
The menu is based around sharing plates, and it worked really well with two of us. The meat was super tender (the brisket was a particular highlight), and the salads and vegetable sides provided a cleansing counterpoint. Would definitely go again.
M. S.
Decided to come here on a whim and we are so glad we did. Service was great and staff were attentive and helpful. The food was the best we’ve had in Melbourne so far. We got the lamb, chicken wings (BBQ), cauliflower, milk rolls and potato salad and everything was delicious. Our favourite was the lamb, it was cooked to perfection and the sauce paired perfectly with it. My Shirley Temple was also great. Highly recommend!
K. D.
Relaxed date night pick for my husband and I. We ordered devilled eggs, grilled octopus, cumin cauliflower, slaw, brisket, lamb ribs and BBQ fries and left feeling full - more so from the richness than volume of food. Servings were not stingy but also not bountiful.
Service was great - helpful but not intrusive. Nathan made some great suggestion, split our order into handy courses and offered to make a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu. We realised after the fact that we hadn’t been offered any hot sauces, but we also hadn’t asked for them so can’t really fault that.
Pretty dark restaurant, which was fine for us, and not too noisy. Could have a decent conversation.
Not in a hurry to go back but still a good meal out!
B. D.
Was really stoked with our night at fancy hanks. They were more than accommodating for a large group of 15+ guests and the catering was amazing. Something for everyone including vegetarians! Will be back. The drinks list is great too - again lots of variety while maintaining quality. A nice option in the cbd for smoked meats!
J. B.
Went to Fancy Hanks for a birthday celebration with 6 others and had a really good and filling meal. The waiter (Michael) was very attentive to our needs and had our food was out in good time. The food was extremely nice. All in all head a great night and would recommend this place. Also great bar on the roof.
C.
Went again, the food was good but service was poor. I was there with 4 people and got the platter for 4. The meat that came was cut in 3 pieces so made it tricky. Wine which one can buy for $30 a bottle they sell for $80. We had enough wine in the bottle for another glass but all of our glasses were full so they took it away. Ordered another bottle and they did the same thing again. It was a warm night and they were very busy, but the waiters body odour was foul. The food was very good though, but when you're paying $100+ a head, one expects better service.
L. B.
On arrival staff were great. Busy, we had a dinner sitting from 8:15 p.m., service was very good. Food delicious, deceptively looked like small serves, but plenty of food for our booking of 8. Unable to order favorites on the menu as they had run out of servings. 2nd spoiler was being rushed to leave before 10 pm, when advertised as being open until 11 pm. Food delicious. Will definitely go back, just not on a Sunday evening.
M. M.
The service is crazy slow. We waited 45 minutes before we got food. That's weird for a BBQ place because all of the food is ready cooked. Maybe we just had a bad waitress. The one redeeming thing that we ate that qualifies this restaurant for 3 stars is their brisket. It melts in your mouth with how tender it is.
Atmosphere is nice, however it is very loud there on a Friday night.
J. H.
Every time I come here I'm never disappointed. Their burner puts out some of the best smoked meats I've tried in Melbourne. amazing mac and cheese along with the most addictive chip seasonings dipped in home made mayo that's to die for.
Always get a butter biscuit it's essentially a scone that complements the pulled pork or beef brisket sublimely. Also a great beer list and tap wine that is always fresh! Quealy is amazing.
E. K.
Nice decor and excellent service. Food comes quite quick and tasted pretty good. Slaw was refreshing and not overly tangy. Deep fried cauliflower was awesome. Pork ribs was tasty unfortunately the meat didn't come off the bone kind. Sausages was okay.
Food - 8
Service - 8
Vibe - 8
Price - $$$
J.
Food was well prepared, staff extremely friendly and was made to feel welcomed. Came for lunch and had the sandwich and chips. All was delicious and there was a good selection of drinks. Location was nice and view out the window was nice. Would definitely come back for a dinner one night.
A. C.
Came on a Thursday lunch time around 1pm and there was plenty of space. Get a table near the front window for the best light, view and atmosphere. I had cauliflower "sandwich" which was more of a burger (came in a burger bun) but was delicious nevertheless. Chips also highly recommended! They have a decent selection of good beer as well.
A. T.
Beautiful food inside a beautiful building! Would recommend to anyone who is craving for some grade-a quality barbecue meat in a lush interior environment. It’s in the higher side of meals, but well worth every dollar you spend.
E. D.
Absolutely sensational! We had the lunch master platter which was insanely delicious. Super fresh, vibrant, flavorsome and generous dishes that all compliment themselves perfectly. Staff are all exceptionally friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.
M.
I love coming here. I’ve always enjoyed the food and the atmosphere and I’ve even brought a few mates from the US here to get there take on it which has been very positive. Despite the excellent selection of meats I have to say I really love the corn bread. Even if you need to wait for a table you can just go upstairs to the rooftop bar and have a few beers whilst you wait. Excellent
C. K.
Ordered the banquet option with 5 people. Main was brilliant, sides were exceptional (those beans!) and the sauces rounded it out nicely. Left the place uncomfortably full with the leftovers in takeaway boxes.
Drinks and menu are reasonably pricey but you do get a good feed in.
C. W.
We happened along to Hank's. Let me tell you, we will be back! Great vibe, wide selection of drinks and the food is ahhhhhh-mazing!
D. G.
Food was good quality, though I didn't get to taste the pork ribs....what kind of ribs place runs out of pork ribs early on a Friday evening? Our meal was rushed because we had to vacate the table for another booking. We were advised of this as we took our seat, but it felt like staff placed more focus on moving us on quickly rather than ensuring we had a good dining experience.
M. S.
Great american style BBQ place and made for sharing plates. We had the set menu which i think is the way to go. There was more than enough food so save space. The sausage and pulled pork are pretty amazing, but for a BBQ joint the salads and the hot chips are spot on.
W. L.
Menu is per person price. Good ribs but quite pricey.
J. W.
nice food with nice beer, worth to come back again
M. M.
Great flavors and beautiful presentation. Service was outstanding!
L. J.
If you are looking for meat or are a low carb person and an American steakhouse ambience suits you, then Fancy Hanks on Bourke St is a good choice. We booked and just as well as the place up one flight of stairs was buzzing. Our table of 4 ordered 4 meat dishes and 4 sides. The meat comes on one big sharing plate. Everything was perfect. Sides of green salad, cauliflower (my favourite) beetroot etc also just what we wanted. Didn't need anything else and there was food over. Good drinks choice. All up a great dinner which is often what you want when travelling after fancier fare is beginning to lose it's appeal.
A. P.
Been for lunch a couple of times now and I can say both times the lunch was fantastic! Most certainly filled a hole! The staff were fantastic and knowledgeable about the food. Will be returning with the family one evening to sample the mains, if u like barbecue food, then this is for you.
S. E.
Eating at Fancy Hank's was great. The servers were kind and smiling. The food was great. I personally recommend the Lamb ribs and the Beef Brisket. The price is about average for Melbourne and it's just a short walk from some of the more popular shopping areas.
D. M.
Interesting and out of the ordinary dishes. Good friendly service. Nice atmosphere.
S. J.
Bit disappointed. Servings seemed a little small and was very expensive for what we got.
However, the food was great, the ribs delicious and tender. The lamb was just okay, and the wings missed the mark.
It was good, but just didn't seem what you would expect for a bbq place
A. P.
Went there before night out. Unfortunately, it was a bit early for the full menu so we had everything from the bar snacks menu. It was my first time eating American slow cooked bbq and I loved it. Can't wait to go again to try the rest of the food.
The atmosphere and staff were fantastic too. Seriously considering to go there for the work Christmas party.
Great job guys!
B. V. D. C.
The food was good, other than the desserts. The brisket was great, as were the biscuits and cornbread, but the prices of sides and starters was too high for portion size. Overall, although I mostly enjoyed my meal, I didn’t think it was worth the price.
C. H.
Good, but in no way the best American BBQ in Melbourne and not value for money. We have a favourite local BBQ joint (Dexter in Preston) and it is out of this world, so we were left underwhelmed from our $50pp Fancy Hanks feed. Brisket was hard and dry, pulled pork was overly vinegary. The best part of our meal was the sides!
Service was pretty impersonal too, which compared to what we are used to was really disappointing. We won’t return again, sadly. We had high hopes but these hopes just didn’t turn into reality!
C. L.
Great bbq. Also I have complex dietary requirements, and the wait staff were very helpful and understanding. I felt very well looked after.
E. T.
Had a great meal. The food was unbelievably good. Service was also very high so I've no hesitation giving 5 stars to this venue. Very meaty and very tasty. Dessert was also incredible. Spiced pudding is highly recommended.
P. N.
Fantastic spot for great American BBQ!
The highlights were the brisket, wet wings, cauliflower and chips.
Chips don't have a large range in quality a good chip is a good chip but these were a step above.
Wouldn't need to twist my arm to return!
M. M.
PICKLES! MEAT! FRIED CHICKEN! This place is heaven. They are set up so you just order and pay for everything via your phone, tres modern and handy.
Oh I forgot to add - COCKTAILS!
A. P.
Being a American bbq I was excited. Was greeted by friendly staff and shown to a table. Ordered two beers, brisket, fries, cauliflower, corn bread and half chicken. Cost for all this was 99 bucks which to me is on the expensive side. 22 bucks for a half chicken is way too much.
Food came and was tasty, but every dish was on the sweet side. That gravy with the brisket was just a bbq sauce which was sweet.
Food came before the beers so had to ask again for the beers before they turned up.
Overall a good place to eat but they need to look at the pricing on some items.
C. S.
Amazing. I've been looking for an American style bbq place to go to which is actually good. I've got high standards after living in America, and no place in Australia typically comes close. that is until I came to Fancy Hank's. So great. We got the $50 set menu. SO. MUCH. FOOD. And I'm a big eater. Great way to try a bit of everything. Highly recommend.
A. F.
I eat here all the time. Favourites - brisket, Mac and cheese, biscuits and the salads are really light and fresh. I've even taken vegetarians there and they've had a great time. Easy to book online and get a table. My favourite BBQ spot in Melbourne
A. T.
Great atmosphere and service always efficient. Had the lunch menu this time. Just the right amount. My go to place for American BBQ. Next time ribs. Always a great experience and choice no matter how many times you go. Oh it helps to love meat!
R. L.
Brisket looked a little dry but was great. The pastrami was amazing. Should be on the menu full time. Chicken was good but not great. No ribs sold out at 8pm!! Sides all good and excellent beer selection.
A. A.
Tasty food and service. Vibe is good, dim lighting adding to it.
L.
The food was really good, and the staff was awesome! We ordered burnt ends, and it came with chopped beets. The ribs where really delicious. We where able to cut them with a butter knife. We ordered the greens, and they where really spicy.
J. C.
Foof was really excellent. Best brisket I've had in Melbourne. Tender smoked pork, lamb ribs and beef ribs, all top notch. Sides excellent too, soft cornbread, tasty romaine salad and rich mac and cheese. New venue really does the food justice. Service exquisite, great night, thank you.
J. W.
The food was okay, some very good dishes -the brisket and Mac and cheese, though others were just okay. Service was very hit and miss, one or two staff members were good, others were impatient, rushed and had to be reminded about several items, knocked things from our table. Gave up asking for water as it never came. Overall, an inconsistent experience.
S. W.
Comparatively a little expensive for a BBQ restaurant, and the meats were served lukewarm to cool. The flavors were very good and the restaurant has a lovely vibe and a great view of Bourke Street. There was also a curious explanation provided by wait staff in regards to not being able to serve sour cream on the side of the dish, which frankly sounded like it was untrue.
Overall good tasting food that was let down by a couple of areas.
M. S.
Very delicious. Loved the wings, the sausages and the cornbread. Went with a group of 6 and had the $50pp tasting menu. It was very good value for money but there was so much food wasteage, which I absolutely hate.
R. H.
Ordered a 3 pork ribs and a bunch of the other sides and meals. It was OK, fairly disapointed for the price. Ribs could have been more juicy and had more flavour. Plus they came out Luke warm at best which was also a minus
C.
I've had bbq/smoked meats all over Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula but yours are absolutely the best, tender, salty and spiced to perfection. The loaded chips were fantastic too and the sides in general delicious. Nice wait staff, fast service, good beer choices.
S. H.
This is one of my favourite restaurants. It has gotten pricier over the years, by it is excellent barbeque and always a nice relaxed vibe.
I’ve eaten here many times over the years, including their old location near the Victoria Markets, and have always experienced friendly, helpful service.
A. H.
I've eaten here 4-5 times before this. I always brought people hear raving about how the brisket and bbq sauce is as good as I've ever had. Unfortunately this last time it was just OK, and the sauce didn't do it for me either. Getting it perfect 80% is very good, so I guess I shouldn't complain. The BBQ is Texas style. The sauce (they call it gravy) is tangy with no heat noticeable to me. The pickle side is very nice. In previous visits I had the ribs (outstanding) and the chicken (OK).
A.
Amazing food, thoughtful presentation and most importantly the staff were friendly, accomodating and energetic! A great way to spend a birthday dinner. Thanks guys!
J. M.
Really great brisket here. Would love to try the ribs, but these sell out very early. The place can be a bit loud and is a touch on the pricey side, but that's soon forgotten when you try the food. Could probably do with a bit more variety in the combos available.
Update 9/3/18: Sadly, it looks like a new menu has launched. From a Friday lunch visit I found the brisket is now nowhere near the stratospheric levels of awesome it was, and the mac and cheese is now a much smaller serving, sans olive bits (normally don't like olives, but in this it's epic) and cheeto dust. It took us the best part of 30 minutes to be served with a 1/3 full restaurant, so something has gone amiss here. Under new management or ownership perhaps? The beer list was a bit anemic also, with only 2-3 proper crafts, and the rest the likes of Asahi and Furphy. I really loved this place, and probably considered it the golden standard of Melbourne BBQ, but with food and service like this I can't bring myself to recommend it to a mate over and above any of the cities other BBQ offerings. Fingers crossed it gets better.
R. L.
As someone with 9 years in the hospo industry, the service at this place was next level. James was a delight, and super informed and helpful with all questions on the menu. The food was delicious and unique to boot. Definitely a new local favorite.
J. B.
Being a BBQ meat fan it was time to make the journey to Fancy Hanks, conveniently located near trams and train getting to it was easy just a short walk from Parliament station. You have to book as it's very popular. Seated straight away, drinks and food ordered within 5-8 mins, we’d researched the menu online we knew what we wanted. Everything was as expected, but yes as other reviews have noted it is expensive comparatively speaking, $29 for half a roast school is insane. Anyway it's worth risking your safety by going into Melb CBD.
A. M.
A great venue for a group gathering. Loved everything that came out of the barbecue, all the side dishes and sauces. The staff were friendly and enthusiastic, and did a good job describing the dishes.
N. O.
Fancy Hanks was awesome at the old venue! Stronger focus on service now, but it kind of misses the mark. Ribs far too expensive. Really missed the old variety of sauces. Whipped mackerel special wasn't good either :(. Couldn't taste any mackerel or smokiness, was like a cream cheese dip. But the brisket was good as ever and definitely worth coming back for!
D. K.
Was a bit of a hit and miss to be frank on the night. They had run out of the chicken dish we wanted to order and when it came to dessert, it took so long as they had to run and get more ice cream. From what we had orders, the good was nice but I would not say amazing.
A. H.
Friendly staff but food was average and overpriced. Sides good but ribs were a bit dry and tough, basically tasted boiled and slightly smoked. Not what was expected for American bbq. Had much better elsewhere for half the price.
S. G.
Ticks all the bbq options and everything we ordered was great. Only downsides were that some items were sold out by the time we were seated (8:30pm weeknight) and the pork ribs were available in either 900g or 1kg. Seriously should have a 500g and 1kg option.
J. T.
My first time at Hanks tonight and I was impressed. The pork ribs and burnt ends were to die for but the coleslaw and wings left a bit to be desired. I was also disappointed in the bar staff as it was a fairly quiet night and our entrees came out before our drinks. Will probably return...
M. H.
Have been here a couple of times, but this was the first at this location, food was good albeit a little pricey... Although considering the time and effort that goes in to some of these smokers I think it is worthy.
With Good Heavens above its a great place for a feed and some after dinner drinks with your crew.
W. C.
Came here for lunch on a Saturday (book if you are in a large group). We had preordered a rack of pork ribs (recommend to preorder because it sells out) and ordered the pitmaster set menu as well. Be warned the pitmaster has a huge amount of food. The pork ribs were very flavourful and tender. In the pitmaster menu everything was delicious but in particular the cornbread, pulled pork and brisket. If you're coming here for lunch try not to sit against the window as it can get quite hot on a sunny day.
B. C.
Really cool spot and vibe going on. Staf that served our table were very freiendly and energetic. Food was nice and the express lunch was most definately express. Portion could have been a little bigger and the coleslaw side a smidge more exciting. However ill definately be going back, need to try that brisket as a main!!
M. M.
A great place for informal dining where the food is always great and the portions are simply awesome. If you are not satisfied with the size of the helpings then you must have an appetite like Shrek! but I reckon that even Shrek would be challenged to finish the tasty generous portions served here.
B. 7.
The meat came to our table almost cold. The sausage skin was really hard and the fried cauliflower was gross . The best part of our meal was the coleslaw. We left hungry unfortunately. Didn't live up to expectations. Staff were friendly.
N. K.
So much meat.....So much flavour .... Great service !
L. H.
Fancier than their old location, but somehow less. While in the past the food was the centerpiece, now I feel it's more the atmosphere they're trying to focus on. The service is great and the food is excellent, but there's something missing, and I feel it's BBQ.
M. W.
A favourite. Always a delicious experience, no matter what you order. Very helpful and friendly staff too :). Love it!
D. E.
Really enjoyed our night out here. The food is excellent and tasted delicious. Great selection of beers and other beverages also.
K. E.
Amazing flavours in their sauces, but the quality of meat was not on par with their competition. The rooftop bar was crowded, but good atmosphere. I liked the sides that came with our meal, too.
b.
The entree's were amazing but unfortunately the brisket was dry.. hopefully it was just the slices I got. I've heard some amazing reviews and plan to go back.. the atmosphere is great.
J. B. L.
BBQ American style and done very well. The service staff are exceptional very well trained and drilled, atmosphere can be fairly rowdy and in full party mode from what I have seen. Great for group tables and functions.
S. O.
Brilliant personable service, food was delish and the atmosphere was perfect for our group. A bangin' Melbourne venue that obviously takes pride in it's product. Thank you, wish we'd had space for dessert!
N. G.
Great atmosphere and staff. Food is great
S. K.
Good atmosphere, great service, and great feed. We left it to our waitress Matilda to fill the table...is meat poisoning a thing? Like can you overdose on BBQ sauce or ribs? I think I was close...Say hi to Keanu in the gents.
B. W.
Absolutely amazing food and very accommodating to my dairy free needs. Awesome staff so nice and friendly. Definitely be coming back. Great way to start our date night in the city. Xoxo
W. Q.
It's changed since moving from Victoria market to Bourke st. Certainly a lot more "fancy", food is still the same. Its smokey, its tender its juicy just bot served on trays lined with paper anymore. Still have a good selection of beers on tap but no more outdoor area. Still puts on a few lunchtime specials priced 15-30.
N. L.
Good smoked meats, always consistent
S. M.
Was fun, beer on tap was good, lunch menu was good too. Burnt the chicken wings, but the condiments covered the taste. had Keanu Reeves watch me pee, then had 2 pac reassure my manliness on the out of the toilet
L.
Amazing food, you can either order pre sorted meals or make one up yourself. Meat is fantastic with a wide range of different sides (chips are fantastic). Great Beer choices at the bar and friendly staff.
A. Y.
'Feed Me' price and choice was good. Pulled pork was a tiny bit dry but overall the food and drinks were yummy. Good atmosphere, although couldn't hear the people at the other end of the table.
J. L.
The $25 express lunch is cool in concept (15 minutes or it's free). However, for the price, I expected more of their barbeque sandwiches. Definitely not enough sauce. Dryest coleslaw I've ever had.
T. P.
My first time there. We had meat dishes and they were nicely cooked. Shredded pork and sliced steak. None of the meats were dry they just melted. Oh, and try the corn bread for something different.
N. L.
Booking for a weekend evening is advised and they take booking regardless of number (thank you!) The service was excellent although they do push the drinks a bit. Food was awesome! A 200g is good to share between two people with three or four sides.
T. K.
If customer was sick, should not charge $120 for cancleation fee. Received my full refund. Thank you very much!
T.
Ribs and meats were okay, the ribs were lukewarm and required seasoning desperately. However they did have that nice smoked texture. Staff were super friendly, but at the price point I wouldnt be running back anytime soon
T. B.
The best BBQ place in the CBD of Melbourne. They have some good BBQ food, but I have to say it is not great. The macaroni is by far my favourite but the pulled pork is a close second. In the winter they have some really good happy hour specials.
G. G.
Second time we have come this month, it's exoensive, servings are a little small for the cost too, but it's so good it's worth it. Value for money is the only thing stopping a 5 star rating here. Service is great, food is great, atmosphere is cosy.
M.
Excellent Atmosphere, team and food. A brilliant place to have dinner with friends and family
J. B.
Brisket was juicy, mac and cheese was phenomenal, devilled eggs and coleslaw are both great. Drinks (agave old fashioned) were on point and service left nothing to be desired. Couldn't fault the meal.
A. R.
Slow cook meats were amazing. The ribs and even simple things like chicken wings were so good. Little bit too pricey though, small portions but they do fill you up quickly!
N. H.
Meat heaven with a good side of vegetarian dishes, washed down with a great selection of beer. The smoked meats are the signature dishes but it's great food for all. Just don't look at the wall decorations if you believe "meat is murder"
C. M.
Amazing food and great service. Get in early to ensure they have enough of some of the menu items left. As it takes a long time to cook they can run out of some things.
A. L.
A sea of full face beards and sleeve tats, but a very cosy vibe with great BBQ and friendly staff. I had lamb ribs with a side of slaw. Perfectly cooked but a bit too salty. I Googled "best BBQ in Melbourne city" and this place came up
K. L.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, food and drink price was responsible priced.
Great open atmosphere. The meat is definitely the reason to go and cooked perfectly, when you're at the table waiting it will feel like a while, however the wait times are not that bad, i was there during lunch.
Recommend this to anyone who loves messy smoked meat. Bring a toothpick and a facewipe lol. Worth coming all the way out from Albury.
S. B.
Really good BBQ! Was pleasantly surprised that they had Arnold Palmers on the menu, but turned out they use sparkling lemonade, which was a bit odd. Also, no nut free desserts. Great service though!
P. M.
The food, the atmosphere and staff are brilliant. I will be going back. The chips (fries) are some of the best I've had!! You can also get a tour of the massive BBQ they use to cook their meat.
S. W.
Noisy reflectory style dining from a giant smoker , a vegans nightmare but a meat lovers heaven, order and pay via a barcode on the timber table.
J. Y.
Was pretty delicious - brisket was amazing, sauces weren't quite as a good I felt. Very loud place, so if you're going with a big group it affect your ability to hear what others down the end of the table are saying.
J. W.
Spot on BBQ and great value for money. They also have a variety of great sauces, from the traditional BBQ sauce to some others with much more kick. Go up the stairs and at the back on the right you can also go out to an terrace, very nice atmosphere.
E. M.
Ribs ribs ribs! I suggest order a la carte as the set menu didn’t do much for me but each to their own. We had awesome service and they dealt with our large group really well.
C. C.
Enjoyed the food a lot. Really friendly service. Would have been better off there was a rich, chocolatey dessert option. Would be a good fit considering the rich, smokey, fatty food on offer.

Me and a friend stumbled on this place. Words can't describe the food there. If you love American bbq food this is the place for you. Staff here were excellent service was fast and the beer and alcohol choices were vast.
M. S.
Delicious American-style BBQ. Not cheap, but worth the price for the amazing flavour. Great atmosphere - try to get a seat by the window overlooking the street. Prompt, attentive and friendly service.
N. M.
Fantastic space, and the menu has all sorts of delicious stuff. I found my pulled pork sandwich a bit dry though, and it's confusing that you must order drinks and food at separates parts of the bar. Still worth the visit!
M. B.
I've got mixed feelings in reviewing Fancy Hanks, on the one hand I organised a work dinner there and everything went well and the staff that came to the table were pretty good and the food was fantastic.
But, on the other hand I went with friends close to closing time only to have the till close literally while my guest was in front of it looking at the menu with no prompt to hurry up before the till was closed, being Japanese it took a while for my guest to read the menu, but there was NO warning at all. To make it worse half of our table had already ordered, the guy on register knowing this, as he personally took the previous orders, then refused to take the order for the rest of the table telling our guest to line up at the bar and order bar food instead.
The only reason they aren't getting a one star review is because other staff saw what the douchebag at the till did and apologised to us and said they wished they could do something about it but couldn't. So combined with the great food and the previous good experience, I can rate them at least in the middle for now.
Hopefully they improve their customer service and experience management by the time I go again...

Good food. Was out of some menu items at 7:40 service so was a little unimpressed by that. Server also forgot to order 2 items as well. Ok experience all up but definitely good food.
C. S.
Great setting, good music. You're unlikely to be disappointed with the food. One of those places where you go with your friends for dinner one night but then next time you all want to go out and you're all naming off suggestions someone will mention this place but no one will really wanna go there again.
S. D.
The food is delicious. Portion sizes are not the biggest however, so be warned if you're hungry.
D. N.
Great tasting food and worth the price. Gets very busy and need to book in advance or arrive early. Takes a bit of time to get served and a little annoying if your waiting for a drink refill
J. D.
Still impresses after all these years. Staff are attentive and friendly, and options are plentiful. Suggest going the chef selection as you can try lots of yummy meats.
P. C.
Amazing BBQ food and exceptional service.
M. S.
Food is decent, little on the pricey side. Staff are good. Melbourne just has not mastered the Beef Brisket yet, always seems a touch dry. I am a harsh critic though!
R. L.
It may seem odd for someone from California to get bar-be-que in Melbourne, but Fancy Hank's is better than many stateside joints. The food quality is very high (e.g., Berkshire pork) and they use real wood smokers, not the BBQ boxes so prevalent in the San Francisco area. Great, friendly staff. I had my best-yet Australian IPA, too.
L. G.
Food was fantastic. Cosy bbq place due to the large amount of people. Had to wait a while for a table but the wait was well worth it. I recommend making a reservation.
C. J.
Food was good, mac & cheese amazing, beef rib a highlight, brisket a little dry. Service was mixed, woman who served us seemed a bit down and was not accommodating, ruined the vibe.
N. D. S.
Fancy Hanks is such a great mix of casual dining with attentive service and a well executed food and drinks menu. Even the veg options were great and well balanced. Will definitely be back.
A. T.
Delicious bbq food - great idea to get a mix of lots of plates to share on the table. Tender, juicy meats and cocktails that match. Service was attentive and prompt.
J. L.
Food was great, brisket burnt ends with beetroot were delicious. Good selection of beers on tap. Will definitely come back again.
d. m.
Spot on mains with good serving size, great selection of entrees, and the atmosphere works beautifully in the afternoon or evening; rain or shine, and boasting a generous amount of natural light for your dining experience. I will be back, if only a matter of time...
M. N.
Loved it, we got so distracted by the variety and specialty of the sides we almost skipped the BBQ main course. A great selection of imported beer too. The BBQ was incredible but VERY expensive.
D. M.
Excellent smoked meats... I had the brisket lunch meal which was excellent! Also had the black pepper sausage links to share. My colleague had the chicken burger and was also amazing...
A. B.
Service staff were fantastic. Food was a little underwhelming, maybe my expectations were different to what was being served. I felt the range of meats on offer limited. But again service was fantastic.
D. A.
Started badly with poor seating arrangements but after some intense renegotiation this restaurant put on some of the best tucker I've had and their service lifted to the point that all earlier sins were forgotten. Would go again no sweat.
D. M.
Food was excellent, tad pricey, but happy to pay the extra if it is good. Staff are very helpful. Waiter with the glasses (forget his name) helped us with making some good choices and was very helpful.
Good Flavours 👌
A. C.
Think i went in there with very high expectations, maybe set myself up to fail. Food was OK but didn't blow my mind like some other burger and BBQ places have. Will be visiting again to confirm thoughts, if I get a chance.
D. G.
The Feed me option is great. Brisket is A maxing and loved all the sides. Corn bread is so good. Good place to bring your vegan friends
F. D.
Went in with a semi-large group with no notice and the staff bent over backwards to accommodate us, organizing food for all to share. All the meats were done beautifully - no complaints, definitely give this place a go.
J. P.
Ordered lamb, ribs, brisket and sausages. The sausages were dry but ribs were very nice. Food overall was good but so over priced
J. W.
Best US style bbq in town. Service was quick and attentive. Meats were exemplary. Sides were fantastic. Desserts were fantastic. Averagely priced.
R. E.
Nice venue, pulled pork sandwich is flavorsome although the smokeyness is perhaps lost in the slaw somewhat, fries are delightfully crisp. Don't overlook this place for an afternoon snack !
L. T.
Excellent meats. Attentative service.
N. C.
AMAZING BRISKET! AMAZING CORN RIBS! Finger licking goodness! Staff are friendly and very attentive. Highly recommend this place! I I would give more stars if I could.
S. P.
The cumin fried cauliflower was awesome. The service was excellent. The waiters made sure we were well waited on and cared to make sure we were comfortable.
R. T.
Reasonable American style bbq but nothing particularly spectacular. Very over priced for the quality and overly loud ambience. It's quite an indictment that I can find a far better American style bbq place in a remote city in China.
A. B.
Amazing food and drinks. Service staff were very responsive despite it being a very busy night thanks guys!
P. S.
I’m on Keto and popped in, super accommodating and awesome staff... had the eggplant (delicious) and an off-the-lunch-menu served of brisket (sublime)... thank you!
T. J.
Best competition level BBQ in Melbourne. Every side was delicious too. Been to a number of places and they just don't compare. Definitely will return.
P. M.
If you're a carnivore this place is heaven.
Never been disappointed in all the times we've been there
E. M.
Great value for money. Nice list of beers and delicious BBQ meat. I liked the Angus beef brisket and the fancy saga. Also the place itself is nice.
A.
Lovely food and great ambience. Great smoked barbeque flavour which was really unique. I especially liked the sides, very huge portions and all the sides I ordered were great.
A. W.
Food here was amazing. Got a mixed platter which seemed to give us a sample of everything.
It's a great location to each way too much meat.
A. Y.
Incredible meats! The chips are fantastic and a great atmosphere! A mix of afterwork clientele and folks on dates. Upstairs is a rooftop bar as well.
S. Z.
Had the romaine salad (tremendous) and Andouille sausage (amazing) and a pint of IPA. Throroughly enjoyed the meal - great service and prices. Highly recommended.
E. C.
Their lunches are delicious! Dinner was good as well. I loved the wings and highly recommend those. Staff was prompt and friendly.
J. A.
Incredible food!! The meat was so tender and everything was so tasty. Highly recommend
T. S.
Love Fancy Hanks: an OG in the US BBQ game, tasty meaty treats & a range of sides even a veggo option! Great location to boot.
N. C.
Delicious beers and smoked meats, corn bread in jalapeno butter and beef brisket were a highlight. Beer list is on point. Second the window table choice, great spot.
j. a. d.
Tasty food and reasonably priced. Service is great. I found the meat quite tasty the chicken wings were a stand out and the jalapeño popper was a let down.
d. m.
Only came to try the blooming onion which was fantastic but also got a amaretto sour(alcoholic) which tasted like cherry starburst
C. L. (.
Really nice food and good service.
D. O. D.
Great food and awesome service. Shame about the booking being limited to 1hr 15min. Not enough time to enjoy a a calm dinner with friends.
B. D.
Not a fan of ordering and paying on my phone. Was also incredibly loud and a bit expensive but the food was nice.
M. O. (.
Best BBQ I've had so far hands down. For the first time ever we couldn't finish our meal and stared at the last rib hoping one of us could eat it haha. We'll be back :)
V. P.
Excellent beef rib and the BBQ fries are great. Somewhat pricey but it's one of the few good U S style BBQ places in Melbourne.
B. K.
So fricken delicious. Pastrami special so so good. Brisket was a tad on the dry side but really enjoyed the food. Porter was also somethjng different but yum!
B. P.
Good ribs, dry rub not moist. But still delicious. Mac and cheese is insane. Chicken have a lovely smoke flavour. Would go back.
w. s.
Great variety of classic American bbq dishes. Service was very friendly and prompt. Best pulled pork I've had in Melbourne.
C. C.
Awesome food for groups, tasty and well presented. If you're looking for a mighty huge pile of meat and well complimenting salads then definitely the place for you!
L. “. B.
Fancy Hanks are straight up one of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Try the brisket, the lamb shoulder or the corn ribs for a good time 👌
J.
Okay meal overall but the beans and braised vegetable dish with asian shallots reminded me of something I’d make when I’m really tired with random leftovers. White fish was fantastic.
J. L.
We booked a table for dinner with a few mates and ordered the Pitmaster. It was fantastic with the standout being the brisket.
The staff was very helpful and friendly
D. M.
These guys replaced a burger that was dropped upon receiving due to a naughty puppy. Incredible customer service. Great food. Coming back every time. Thanks crew.
C. S.
My go to place when I feel like having a good feed. They will never disappoint you !
J. C.
Such great BBQ food. My son's "favourite restaurant in Australia".
M. A.
My husband and friends loved the short ribs and brisket. There were decent vegetarian options for me too. Staff is really friendly.
T. V.
It was a great experience. The waiters were very nice, the meats very good and the coleslow was fresh with an asian style.
S. M.
Delicious food, excellent service and a fantastic new venue. Food came out fast and prices were standard. Ill be back! 10/10 would eat again.
C. M.
Great ribs. Plenty of meat on them. $100 for the 1kg seemed a little steep but they were well enjoyed nonetheless.
C. P.
I think for the price of the brisket if u only put 2 slices on a plate at least put some sort of side with it didn't really taste as amazing as I thought a bbq restaurant that specializes in smoking meats would taste
Mac n cheese had way to much bread crumbs on top I scraped off as much as I could and was still to much only giving 3 stars because of the great service
S. D.
Awesome food for meat lovers. You will not be left feeling hungry. The brisket is top notch
A. R.
Food was delicious but serving size was small (lamb shoulder and brisket was ordered from mains)
N. L.
Great venue but BBQ wasn’t what I had hoped for. Brisket was a little dry for my liking but overall was worth a try.
J. P.
Highly recommended. Magnificent food..Hats off to the chef! Friendly happy staff. Thank you Olivia for your Excellent customer service ...Can't fault it! 😁
G. B. (.
MEGA overpriced beer and food. Food is good but really small portions for what you pay for. Happy hour is pointless, it's only on the one beer which is rubbish.
N. M.
I wouldn't count this as Texas barbeque joint. Beef brisket was dry and missing flavors. Staff service was good though.
T. W.
Delicious food, huge portions and very well priced. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Would highly recommend.
J. C.
I got the lunch set menu with a large group and the food was excellent. Also has a small but good range of beers.
T. M.
First that hits you is the smell. The BBQ Smell is what starts your hunger! The food is wonderful. We had a great selection of the menu..... Not a bad choice on the menu!
B. W.
Just not that great at all. Worst ribs I have had the brisket wasn't melting tender. Chicken was good and so was the sides everything else was avg
J. G.
An empty plate at the end of a meal says it all. Very tasty food.
S. S.
It's pretty amazing if you can get in without a crowd of people already there. So it suffers from the popularity paradox: if it gets too busy from people recommending it, it's not quite as good.
Make of that what you can.
A. A.
Food was good but overpriced, particularly when need to pay a 10% surcharge on Sunday (way too much). Small portions, nice atmosphere and staff.
T. M. S.
Great food...and atmosphere
k. p.
Great food awesome service but I wanted larger servings paying 31 dollars for lamb and only got a handful of lamb would have loved a bit more lamb. LAMB
S. P.
Great bbq. One of Melbourne's best. The brisket is the standout,.
Good rotation of craft beer as well.
M. K.
Great brisket and pulled pork
A. F.
If you love MEAT and beer, you will not be disappointed. Unless they have run out of sausage... Love this place for it's awesome eats and great atmosphere.
J. Y.
Consistently good bbq in a great location. Don't skip the weekday lunch special and definitely make time to have a drink at the rooftop bar
J. D.
Could not fault this place! Perfect cooked meats, great flavors, large drink selection and gear staff! Perfect! Highly recommend
F. G.
Five stars doesn't do Fancy Hank's enough, it is a 10/10 on food and drinks and the friendliest staff. Brisket sandwich is the best.
s. n.
Yuuuummm the meat is great but the sides are amazing! Corn bread, Mac and cheese, fried cauliflower is awesome!!
C. M.
Amazing well cooked meats, also good selection of drinks. I will be back and recommending to friends and family for sure.
J. B.
Hands-down the best bbq joint in Melbourne. The Brisket Sanga is to die for. Also a great spot for a drink, selection of tap beers is great and the balcony overlooking the markets is a prime drinking spot!
M. D.
We came here with a group of around 10 or so people. It is quite expensive for how much food was provided. The food is delious but servings not the best, was hungry after. Staff were great.
K. F.
The staff here were amazing. The kept our drinks full all night and the food was delicious. Really trendy place.
I.
Food was ok. Of the ribs, pulled pork (which was hardly pulled) and other food which ran well over $100 for the two of us, my favourite food was the chips....soo....yah....chips....
R. M.
Lovely smoked meats! Great atmosphere and good service.
C. B.
Came here with a large group of friends!! He had a great time. Both staff and food were 5/5. Definitely be back!
D. H.
Chicken sandwich lunch special was average. Came in a sweet burger bun. Pastrami sandwich looked good though.
L. T.
Good foods reminds me back in the states. Recommended
L. A.
One of Melbourne best smoke houses.
If you want amazing brisket and ribs there aren't many places that do it better.
G. W.
Outstanding service and absolutely mouth watering traditional American style barbecue and macaroni and cheese is amazingly good great atmosphere great staff reasonably priced top class allroad
R. M.
The new venue is amazing. The food is as delicious as ever and there is also a great bar on the roof. Can't get enough of this place!
J. C.
The service is excellent but the FOOD oh my god the food. 10/10 recommend to every meat eater.
L. G.
Been before, and have not been disappointed with the food and the rooftop bar is pretty neat (albeit a little expensive) - note though that the kitchen closes for ordering at 9.30pm, making the 11pm closing time a bit of a falsehood.
J. G.
Top notch Brisket and pulled pork. Andouille sausage was almost cold but tasty. Great venue
L. C.
Fantastic restaurant with tasty food - all the American bbq classics plus a strong cocktail showing, delightful service and bottomless filter coffee - what's not to like?!
E. S.
Meats were fantastic, the sides were also great to cut through all the meat. The gin sour cocktail though!
A. K.
Food was great. Easy ordering via ap
J. A.
The only authentic American BBQ in Australia. And ive tried em all. And i cook it myself. In fact.. this place might actually be holding its own in the USA.
A. S.
My partner is from Texas so we have Hi standards when it comes to BBQ. This is probably the best we have had outside of Texas, though it is pricey, so is everything in Australia, so worth it.
S. W.
Delicious food and cocktails. Service top notch. Great rooftop and restaurant setting.
New MELBOURNE favourite
J. R.
For Good Heveans bar. Nice roof top bar above the Fancy Hank's restaurant. Good music and so much variety
C. A.
The best American BBQ food I've had, bar none. Not super cheap, but super awesome.
S. C.
Amazing food and a wonderful atmosphere, this place is a gorgeous restaurant and is perfect for meeting up with friends for a wonderful experience!
S. G.
Food was nice and reasonably priced, and service was good. Was overcharged on the bill, but was contacted by management and it is being dealt with.
W. D.
The food and service were great. The price for the food was as expected but drinks are rather expensive
b.
Delicious food, but a little less than you'd expect for the price. The staff are excellent.
M. L.
Delicious, succulent slow cooked meats. Corn bread is to die for. Definitely a place to go back to.
