Comments of Garden Restaurant at National Gallery of Victoria
E. B.
The food is amazing, we has all the of the entrees as a share meal. Fresh flavours using seasonal ingredients with a good balance in the dishes. Incredible setting of views over the gardens of the NVG.
N. S.
Great food, lovely staff. There was one vegan option for each course. Pictures attached are : vegan cannelloni, lamb rack, pommes frites.

Sadly the food did not live up to expectations this visit. Though the entree (trout) was a reasonable quantity and quite delicious, the main (pork belly) was too dry with little accompanying flavours. Finally the dessert (rhubarb) though delicious was dominated with cream and ice cream with only 8 tiny 1cm squares of rhubarb, just not enough for what was supposed to be the main ingredient of the dish. The service however was excellent.

Had catch up lunch with two friends yesterday. The food was amazing! Staff were friendly and efficient. The garden setting is beautiful. A great restaurant for something special. Would definitely go there again
D. E.
The loveliest and most understanding staff. I was over an hour late arriving, but they were great with my lunch companion and brought out our delicious meals asap after my arrival. Could have been made very uncomfortable, but their professionalism was very much appreciated. Setting great overlooking the gardens at the rear of the gallery and food superb. Thank you

The Garden Restaurant is like an oasis, as soon as you enter it exudes calm and serenity. The staff are equally gracious and they make you feel most welcome. The food is fresh, beautifully balanced and impeccable in its presentation. Simply beautiful! Thank-you!

Our visit to the Garden Restaurant was a delight following our tour of the exhibition. The setting is beautiful at the rear of the gallery overlooking the well manicured gardens. The staff are friendly and professional and meet your every need. The wines were beautiful and the food very good. Well worth the visit.

Beautiful location - great food. Pricey but very nice. The garden in the back is a great place for dinner.
Right now (Jan 2020) a Melbourne restaurant - Tonka is running a pop up. The food’s pretty excellent - they have a great wine list and the staff are all very friendly.
Nice for an up market meal or a cheeky glass of wine in the back garden.

Excellent location and service. Food was really great and showed a mastery blending of flavours. Notably the location was not noisy - there was a reasonably full house yet we could converse normally without any disturbing background noise. Strongly recommended.

Our visit to the Garden restaurant was delightful. Our waiter Nick was extremely helpful, professional and very friendly. Food was delicious. Ambience was good and all service very attentive and non-intrusive. Overall a great experience
D. B.
Generally very good, delightful staff and rather delicious food made for a lovely day at the Gallery, recommended.

Beautiful ambience and scenery overlooking the garden and waterfall. Very impressive when you first walk in and the service was excellent.
Meals were served with great appearance and beautiful taste, just thought it was overpriced in general. $62 for bottle of sparkling wine and meals were a little overpriced for what u got (two chops and two slices of leek, minimal dollops of the mashed sweet potatoe). I would like to come back but just too pricey for my budget.
P. C.
Simply delicious, beautifully presented. Not for poor folks. Just some observations, ales were left on table in cans for guests to open and self pour unasked, table bread was no option, olive bun and served with just butter, no alternative, olive oil or balsamic, serving sizes were fine, but less than generous, entrée + side + ale + coffee @$70 per head including gratuity, host and server were charming ;)

'Thanks team...we will come again soon.

Always a great experience dining here. A favourite part of a trip to the NGV or anytime. Wonderful food and wine choices. Stylish space with lovely views and exceptional service. Highly recommended.

My friend and I had a wonderful lunch. As requested we sat outside in a cool shaded spot.
Food was very good and service excellent.
Look forward to dining there again

At first entry. A single huger ewer of towering dogwood centered the eye, set in the middle of the wide, spacious dining room. Muted colour scheme and wall to wall windows dissolved separation between dining room and the expansive, well tended garden.
Warm welcoming greeting. Amiable attentive service. Serene ambience delivered through subdued decor. Fabulous music at a perfectly subtle setting. The garden - yes, again the garden. A herb and veggie garden both decorative and practical right outside our dining table, as well as the vast ponds with quirky fountain.
Trees layered in shades of green, a mobile garden sculpture gently moving to air currents deepened the serenity,
The tableware both crockery and cutlery provided a base note of elegant simplicity with style.
OH, of course, the food. The sourdough with butter to begin, we chose the crayfish entree, the gnocchi main with a side of baked ratatouille, and the apple tart tatin for desert.
Every element had a purpose, every element delicious, lovingly and artfully prepared, and beautifully presented.
Absolutely recommend

A lovely place to dine. The food and service very good and Sara excellent. The ambiance is relaxing & quiet with a very pleasant view of the garden. Thank you. Elizabeth
P. S.
We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Garden Restaurant. The meals were beautifully cooked and very tasty indeed. Service was excellent. The restaurant environment is very relaxing with gorgeous views over the gallery's gardens. Highly recommended.
S. M.
Such a calm and beautiful environment. The food delicious, presented very well and great value for money. Looking forward to our next visit.

We really enjoyed our lunch at the Garden Restaurant. The food was delicious and most importantly, this beautifully decorated space welcomed our little boy to also join us for a fine dining experience. We love it and will be back definitely.
N. M.
We had lunch at this restaurant. Service and ambiance were very good, but the food was very bland, everything we ordered was pretty tasteless. It was particularly disappointing as the prices were very high even by Melbourne standards
c. l.
Zach and Simon seated and attended to us. They were both very friendly and patient with us. Well presented and helpful.
Food was tasty and presented beautifully.
And, of course, the setting was perfect, surrounded by art.
R. S.
Thoroughly enjoyed my luncheon here, excellent food and service, attentive staff and beautiful ambience. My only comment for future consideration is that I found the airconditioning cold after sitting there for a while. I would highly recommend this restaurant as a place to dine.
c. c.
We love this restaurant. The food is consistently delicious, and the views from the windows out onto the surrounding gardens and water features are really beautiful .

Yesterday, I attended Garden Restaurant with 2 friends, we had a great experience, the ambience was exceptional, the food was good as was the service. It was quiet and it was easy to hear others speaking and the outlook was spectacular.
E. *.
Fantastic outlook, exceptional food, reasonably priced, attentive staff.
I returned to this restaurant today with my 90 yo mother and siblings for a pre Christmas lunch. What a disappointment today following the stellar experience 3 weeks ago. We were not seated at the table as requested and discussed with the young lady when booking. The service was incredibly slow and my elderly mother found this difficult as did we daughters. We saw other tables had been served bread and had to ask for ours, as the main meal had not been served before 2 pm. My mother's champagne didn't come until we asked for it again 1 hour after ordering, The bottle of expensive sparkling water was kept by waiter and only served on request if we could get his attention. The meals were not as tasty as my last experience, the $9 bowl of Pommes frites were nothing more than packet french fries with the smallest sprinkle of salt. Gave up waiting for our desert and left before it was served. If this was a cheap cafe I probably wouldn't mind so much, but this was an upmarket restaurant, I had previously tried and was happy with as stated above a few weeks ago. It was the 1st time my mother and sisters had been able to get together since my father's funeral in January. i cannot believe how such an enjoyable experience in a restaurant can be so different within a few weeks. my sister also said she had had slow service in the past.It is so unreliable sadly my family will not return.
E. M.
Our group of 6 had the perfect long lunch. Great staff who were friendly and attentive, perfect food (lamb to perfection) and wonderful vibe being chilled but classy.
S. G.
Lovely lunch at the NGV - the food was beautiful, with perfectly balanced flavours.
The staff were friendly, courteous & very professional.
This was my first time at the restaurant, but I will definitely be going back.
C. P.
As always, a delicious meal and delicious experience. My friend said the Tartare was the best he had eaten, and this is a big statement from him. I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster medallion. Service first class. Thanks
H. M.
Enjoyed a delicious lunch with caring friendly service in gorgeous surroundings. The name of the restaurant reflects the wonderful garden that diners can enjoy. We will certainly return again soon.

A lovely 2 course lunch with wine. The steak tartare was one of the best I have had. Beautifully presented and the service was above and beyond.
K. M.
Seriously delicious food, fine wine, a lovely setting and excellent service! Thankyou for a very lovely lunch!!
C. C.
Delicious meal, excellent service. Staff were happy for us to sit for a considerable time after our meal was finished as we caught up with friends not seen for a long time.
J. B.
Tranquil garden views, excellent service, accomodating chef and wide seasonal menu all make for a wonderful venue for any occasion.
R. B.
Lovely food, amazing staff and beautiful view overlooking the gardens. The vegan cannelloni was to die for!
D. B.
Generally very good, delightful staff and rather delicious food made for a lovely day at the Gallery, recommended.
E. F.
My goodness. The flavours!! We opted to share two vegetarian entrees with a side of fries. Absolutely delicious. It's a great space. Service is attentive and friendly (for an upmarket dining experience). It was lovely to be able to have a conversation without shouting. You should be able to pick something from the wine list. I was very pleasantly surprised!!
j. l.
We always go back for our wedding anniversary. We love how the setting is the same as it was many years ago as its always a nice walk down memory lane. the food is fine but as a person who loves carbs... there's none on the menu hence 1 star off. otherwise everything is great!
P. K.
This is beautiful peaceful restaurant with top quality food. Looking at the reviews here it looks unfairly low rated and perhaps those were the extreme cases. We have been at this restaurant about 6 times over the years so far and it was never disappointing! If anything can be disappointing those would be customers, in my opinion. This restaurant is not for Macdonald goer for sure, it is fine restaurant. The food is rich and flavoursome, with seasonal ingredients. Yes the meat portions can be small but you order something else with it plus you have beautiful bread with butter for a starter. The photo here is what my daughters and myself ordered for our lunch last time. Tagliatelle and pate are entrees and roast potato in duck fat is just a side. We were full afterwords! We did not even have a main meal. Service was also good, we are not people that like someone constantly checking up on us, it is a restaurant and not a babysitting club! We were quite fine with enjoying food and talking between each other. They always find a table for us too, even though they recommend reservations. That is for me accommodating and great service, they are not supposed to slave around us. One of our favourite restaurants in Melbourne, from Melbournians.

Professional staff, great food and wonderful outlook over the gallery garden. Very enjoyable way to whileaway a couple of hours for lunch after a NGV visit.
L. O.
Perfect location for an outdoor summer day lunch with fam. Food was fresh and delicious but in small portions. Great service.
L. B.
The Garden Restaurant is pleasantly located within the National Gallery of Victoria. It has a wonderful setting. The service was prompt, friendly and efficient. The food was outstanding but at times a little sparse for the price - both entrees and main courses. The desserts were wonderful. This restaurant is well worth a return visit.
F. P.
Had lunch yesterday with my wife Cecille Jeffery and daughter Sylvia, celebrating Mothers Day. We enjoyed it very much. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. The goat's cheese soufflé (served with a refreshing salad of pear and beetroot) was outstanding and all the other food was of a high standard. The atmosphere was also very pleasant, with social distancing ensuring a lack of disturbing noise. Prices were very reasonable. We agreed we must do it again.

Beautiful ambiance, delightful food and wonderful service. It’s so good to see Melbourne getting back to normal.
Thankyou so much!
K. S. K.
Great service, delicious food and lovely atmosphere - Melbourne excursions don't get much better than a great NGV exhibition followed by lunch at the Garden Restaurant.
G. E.
Had a delightful lunch at The Garden Restaurant at NGV. Perfectly cooked and presented food - the duck is excellent - and the elegant, quiet atmosphere makes "catching -up" conversations a pleasure. The staff is attentive without being irritating. A little pricey, but well worth it for the experience.
D. B.
The food was delicious and artistically presented on the plate. The wine list is extensive without being too large and the Grenache suggested by the sommelier went perfectly with our food. Waiter service was faultless and professionally welcoming. The revised sparse Covid placing of the tables leads to an intimate experience at each table. All this at a fair price. A wonderful dining experience.
S. S.
Fabulous lunch overlooking the sculpture garden. Great food, excellent service. Highly recommend
J. U.
The perfect venue for a Christmas catch up with a special girl friend. Beautiful ambiance, delicious food very attentive and professional staff.
V. G.
It’s always lovely to have lunch here when visiting the gallery. Delicious food and a wonderful, peaceful setting! 👍🏼
R.
I had the duck with beetroot as entrée. It had a a lovely smoky flavour and the duck was high quality and cooked to perfection. If you like things on the more well done side I would tell the staff. The chef may have you thrown out but that is a chance you will have to take!
I then had the special which was ribeye steak. This was again perfectly cooked with a small amount of vegies to go with it.
Desert was an utterly delicious pavlova.
The atmosphere is subdued and fitting to the gardens, A real oasis in the city helped by the friendly, efficient and unobtrusive staff. Thanks as we will return.
S. D.
What a wonderful experience it was to dine at the Garden Restaurant. A beautifully located table with a view on to the garden and water feature was a treat. The food was delicious and well presented and the service was at a level found at the best restuarants. Thank you all.
P. M. S.
A beautiful light, bright space with delicious food at reasonable prices and very pleasant staff. I look forward to returning.
E. T.
Located in the beautiful gallery space and overlooking the gardens at the NGV the restaurant was delightful place for our Mother’s Day lunch.
The staff were attentive and the food was glorious.
Really enjoyed my experience there.
S. C.
Lunch at the Garden Restaurant was the perfect way to follow up our visit to the French Impressionists Exhibition. The view was beautiful, the service efficient and friendly and the food delicious. I would highly recommend!
A. P.
Truly excellent. Delicious food beautifully presented with good service in a quiet and pleasant atmosphere.

We had a lovely lunch, food delicous and service friendly.

Very nice entrees and service very friendly
Can Reccomend the citrus cured ocean trout and the pasta entrees
C. L.
My husband and l had lunch at the Garden Restaurant at the NGV yesterday and the food was marvellous. The service was great and quick considering there were quite a few people eating inside and out being Good Friday.
We both had the goats cheese soufflé for entree and it was superb. It came with a lovely salad and pita bread. The bread was for soaking up all the lovely sauce under the soufflé. The mains were great too. I had the steak which was full of flavour and my husband had the special which was barramundi. His fish was beautiful and tender in a sherry like broth.
We have been to the Garden Restaurant many times in the past, this was the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic closed the gallery down. There high standard has not fallen. Which was wonderful to see.
G. R.
Menu selection has reduced considerably.
Set price menu is no longer offered.
Luckily it wasn't busy as only two waiting staff
Disappointing visit this time and cost reduction strategies listed above are reducing the value for money of what was a great place in Melbouirne to have lunch
S. M.
My sister and I had lunch here on Easter Monday and thoroughly enjoyed it .Our waiter was friendly, charming and helpful ...we shared a few humourous moments and he certainly added to our relaxed meal though the venue was fully booked the lovely staff still found time to accommodate folk who presented without bookings -very discretely changing table cloths and even tables to avoid disappointing hopeful punters .... somehow managing to preserve the elegant and peaceful ambience for those currently dining !
The menu though small had an excellent variety to please all palates with vegetarian options as well
Our choices included the cheese souffle (yum) duck entree , the steak and heirloom tomato dish with divine and fresh herbal dressing . We had sides as well .Pannacotta and peach melba were also delicious .
We have been here many times and always marvel at the lovely garden outlook and tranquil atmosphere usually very welcome after the fun and stimulation of the actual exhibition.
When so many places dumb down or lose the plot ( for various and understandable reasons ) its great to have a totally reliable and sophisticated dining option which straddles old worn starched nappery and modern food expectations in such a very 'Melbourne' way
J. C.
Lovely setting, excellent and friendly service and beautiful food. The menu options were somewhat lacking in variety and number though. Would have been great to see some Koi fish in the pond too.
B. S.
Wonderful dining room with garden views and wonderful modern meals. Perfect service. A great place in Melbourne for a special meal with family & friends. I'll definitely be going back.
J. M.
I was delighted that the NGV restaurant menu featured so much Gippsland produce. A day trip from Bairnsdale East Gippsland is not a light undertaking and the crush of the Triennial crowds made the restaurant quite the Sanctuary. The food, wine, service and ambience were all excellent. I love that the Restaurant keeps its simplicity and open vistas.
E. B.
Delicious food in a delightful setting. A treat to follow a gallery visit.
B. H.
Nice food. Perfect size for lunch. Very friendly staff. Good selection of wines by the class. Pleasant environment set in the sculpture gardens of the NGV
C. L.
A superb experience combining great surroundings with excellent staff and best of all a wonderful taste sensation in every dish. A little bit of me wants to keep this place secret, but everyone should really try it. Those who have been, already know.
S. M.
Beautiful food.
Served by such a fabulous waitress, who has been working there for a long time, and makes us feel welcome every single time.
M. A.
Bloody tasty and very friendly wait staff. Even after my dumb dad jokes. I’ll be back.
W. A.
We ended up here by chance as all the other lunch spots were very busy. First impressions were very good, great room with lush green and outdoor art to greet you. Much more expensive than all the other eating spots in the gallery but what the heck.
The food and service is really quite good, not quite like a 5 star restaurant as far as service goes but not bad.
My pet peeve about restaurants is the same as this one, dropping the ball with the customer. Service dried up as soon as the food was served, so getting the bill to pay always turns into a torture.
Don't let me put you off it, it is worth the expense for the room alone.
M. J.
Sitting outside in the NGV garden on a sunny day was delightful. Attentive service, delicious soufflé, salads, fries, freshly baked bread, pannacotta, coffee. An excellent way to celebrate my niece's birthday!
C. G.
Best meal I've had out since Paris 2016. Given a voucher. (We were thoughtful and booked). Plentiful range of meal choices and wines, exquisite combination of tastes & textures, perfectly cooked; lovely wait staff, ambience and outlook to the pond & garden. Hubby & I loved the whole experience. Ask NGV staff to locate restaurant, a little bit hidden. I'm doing this review now as I visit this website to purchase a voucher as a Xmas present for family members.
K. W.
Firstly, I must declare we are regular visitors and have got to know the very friendly and professional staff.
In our experience over many years, the food and the wine choices have been more than adequate and the quality outstanding, so what’s not to like?
The environment is perfect, not to noisy and looking out over fountains and a lovely garden area. The service can be slow if they are busy, so don’t bother if your in a rush. Food and wine prices are reasonable for an ‘up market’ restaurant which is why we eat there every time we visit the NGV.
J. S.
Excellent food, staff and environment as always.

Ambience, food and customer service all contributed to a wonderful experience.
V. M.
Beautiful venue, delicious food and wonderful service.
G. N.
Wonderful food and service in a glorious setting. It was a fabulous prequel to the French Impressionism exhibition.
d. k.
Always pleasing to dine at NGV although was confused by the change of Restaurant name on the website. Staff and food were excellent, however, please coordinate all meals to arrive at the table together.
M. H.
Lovely dining experience as ever. Attentive staff with a beautiful ambience and acoustics were great for conversation.
D. C.
Delicious lunch with friends in a lovely setting. The service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended.
K. H.
A very special place to dine and enjoy good company. Staff are attentive and the food is a work of art.
A. M.
Exceptional service! And a great meal. Looking forward to treating myself and coming back to the Garden Restaurant again.

Three of us went to lunch today and we had a pretty yummy time. We decided to share a few small plates as starters and we all happened to order the same main.
So ... An heirloom tomato salad was fresh and sweetly savoury and dressed just perfectly. The steak tartare was presented wrapped inside deliciously crispy and flaky caraway pastry cigars. And it was beautifully seasoned and full of flavour.
Then crumbed potato quenelles browned and crisped to golden yumminess topped with green fried herbs. And lovely spicy pork dumplings.
We followed these quickly emptied plates with a very generous serve each of roast duck with a lavender glaze, baked peaches, and pureed green peas in a jus puddle. (But we all agreed that even though it was beautifully tender and overall very good, the full duck flavour was somehow muted by the lavender glaze.) Oh and a side of rosemary salted pommes fritte, and another of green beans and sugar snap peas with flaked almonds.
With some sparkling water, and a glass of very reasonable Rosé each, we were well and truly satisfied with a very nice lunch in a most pleasant restaurent. A corner table with 270 degree views of the sunlit gardens just made it even more pleasant.
d. f.
Excellent food (the black olive gnocchi was particularly good) and very good service. Lovely view of the gardens behind the NGV. Cloth napkins, nice cutlery. Marked down one star because my wife's choice of dish (chicken Caesar salad) was unavailable and her second choice (piri-piri chicken) was a little underdone.
S. A.
We had a lovely lunch, delicious gnocchi which was beautifully presented. Thank you Sally & Meryl
s. g.
Lovely helpful staff, beautiful surroundings, but disappointing food, very small portions for the price and a bit tasteless and out dated presentation, I had trout and I felt like it could have been served in 1960!
D. M.
divine service and beautifully delicious food - always!
S. H.
Lovely quiet restaurant with a beautiful outlook. Good menu & winelist, friendly staff & 10 percent off for NGV members. Great finish to a morning in the gallery.
j. l.
Fantastic service and the food exceeded expectations and was just beautiful. The setting is wonderful.

Overpriced, food most of the time good, but portions are tiny. Sometimes they give you what you did not order. Coffee can be horrible it is depend who is doing it.
