Love having some options for German/Austrian food in the area. There’s a good selection of European beers for pretty good prices. The food is good also (I tried the spatzle) although the serving could have been a bit heartier. Overall though, had a positive experience here.

We had the Wiener schnitzel (veal) and the Austrian potato salad that came with it was so delicious! We had rindsuppe (beef soup) with kaspressknödel (fried cheese dumplings), it surprisingly went so well together and the dumplings were very unique. For dessert we had kaiserschmarnn (egg souffle), the perfect end to our meal!
The lady who served us that night was incredibly lovely, friendly, and attentive to our needs. She kept checking up on us to make sure everything was in order!

Wonderful Austrian cuisine in the heart of Melbourne. We went for the chicken schnitzel and the pork sausage and both were delicious and beautifully presented. The sauerkraut with the sausage was out of this world; best I've ever had so far. We finished with the Austrian egg souffle which was just fantastic. The owner was friendly, funny and really sweet. Definitely will be back.

Now this is proper German, Gasthaus is absolutely the gold standard for Deutsche cuisine in Melbourne. The Trout was delightful, The Wiener schnitzel was perfectly crumbed and fried, The Charcuterie board was one of the finest I've ever had. The deserts are amazing too, the plum dumpling (Zwetschgen Knödel) delightful and the traditional Austrian egg soufflé (Kaiserschmarrn) was so good I am convinced that Stroh is a must for deserts with raisins. The schnapps selection is also wonderful and served correctly in a schnapps glass. I did not have any of the beers on offer, but have had them in the past and can vouch to how good they are.

Best meal I've had in a long time. And lovely service. Weiner Schnitzel was excellent.

Great place for South German and Austrian cuisine in Melbourne without all the tourist gimmicks. Love the schnitzel, mushroom gravy and spaetzle. The chef Christian is very good at his work while the owner is very interactive with the patrons. Recommended if you're seeking some Germany or Vienna here in Melbourne.

WOW what a great Austrian/German restaurant with great service and food. A small house not much outside but lots of atmosphere inside. We went for dinner and started with BRETTL JAUSE charcuterie board, traditional smallgoods, cheese, pickled vegetables, fresh baked pretzel. Then as a main meal we had Beef Gulasch, Spaetzle and red cabbage. It was very tasty and juicy cooked the sauce was delicious. The other meal was salmon, vegetable and potato gratin and sauce hollandaise. This was also very tasteful. As dessert we had Kaesekuchen vegan, gluten free, dairy free cheesecake, lemon sorbet also very yummy. Thank you for such a great night.

The aftermath of a delicious Austrian/ German food! Got the bratwurst & salad. Both were delicious - not too salty or oily. Everything tasted very authentic especially the pretzel. Superb customer service. Price is very reasonable as well. Will definitely return for more 😍

Fantastic experience, food and drinks were brilliant and the service was exceptional - Alex was so attentive and full of bants, really made the night.
We will be back, but will bring friends next time!
EDIT: Have been back, and have had the pleasure of being served and treated excellently by the owner and head chef Chris - wonderful bloke. I love this place.

Stumbled across this place from an ad on Instagram and so glad we went! The owner and chef is really friendly and knowledgeable and the service overall was excellent. Food was fantastic and we had the most authentic Austrian schnitzel we have had in Melbourne and the portion sizes were very plentiful. Desserts were also amazing and it's the only place we have ever seen Kaiserschmarrn on the menu. We will 100% be back to try all of the other dishes! Thank you for a great meal!

I was born in Austria and can confirm that Gasthaus serves authentic delicious Austrian cuisine.
Austrians love to start a meal with soup, and the Gasthaus's dark beef broth is yummy and comes with traditional additions such as Frittaten (thin pancake strips, which I have yet to try) or Leberknödel (liver dumpling, which I had and can highly recommend). The real (!) Wienerschnitzel (veal, finely crumbed and pan fried in butter) is a dream and comes with an extra lovely Austrian potato salad (not one of those mayo abominations, but the real thing with a broth dressing!). My friends were as enthusiastic about their Schnitzel as I was about mine. The second time I went there, we made room for dessert, and the Gasthaus "Mehlspeisen" are definitely highlights! We had Topfennockerln (light quark foam "dumplings" with a raspberry coulis) and Kaiserschmarrn (a fluffy pancake, torn up and served with a plum sauce and vanilla icecream). Himmlisch (heavenly)!
The great service by a lovely, knowledgeable and clearly highly motivated staff adds to the experience of genuine Austrian hospitality!

Yumm. Didn't take photos as too busy eating and drinking. Delicious cheese Kransky and pork belly. Beer on tap was also delicious and the service was fantastic. Highly recommend

Always such tasty and well put together meals. Plus the conversations make the atmosphere so much more welcoming. You have gained customers for life.

This establishment provisions the real deal Austrian/German treats.
Owner, Chef & staff are professional communicators.
Look that QR code ordering stuff is a pain the ar$$e.
However once you've mastered it, the provisions appear rapidly.
The food & booze are excellent. My German language skills are a bit rusty, however this appears to be the establishment that Siemens & Mercedes representatives hang out. Enough said.

Casual atmosphere and good food and service. Nothing too fancy but delivers for the price range. Large portion sizes for mains.

Nice service and friendly staff. The food can be a bit salty, but they took our feedback ver well. I would come back here again to try and see if they improved. Can be a bit busy on weekend. Nice alcohol/beer selection.

Stuck in lockdown and bored out of our minds, we decided to try the food at Gasthaus for dinner. What a surprise! Food was delicious even though it was delivered! Pork Knuckle and Sausage platter so well done. Can’t wait to dine in!
A. C.
Amazing beer! The garlic soup is sheer brilliance. The schnitzel was perfectly cooked and the hospitality of the entire team was impressive. Was so full with the food missed out on the dessert. Definitely coming back for more!
P. S.
Nice German/Austrian fair. Went with a large group which had a set menu. Set menu didn’t work for me given I’m a pescatarian. Confident they would have found a solution but I didn’t want to make a fuss.

Flavour was good but we were surprised on paying for our meal that things like gravy and the dip with the bread were extra charges. Made the meal more expensive than we expected. Also we were asked if we wanted our schnitzel pan fried or deep fried. We asked for pan fried and both arrived very clearly deep fried.

Love the food at Gasthaus! Pork schnitzel was perfectly cooked. It was tender and juicy, served with chips and salad. Love the bratwurst too! Also highly recommend their dessert for anyone who has sweet tooth like me :)

Great food, service and beer. German size servings of both the beer and food. Including share plates. Would go back again

Before I actually tried, I was sceptical about a new German restaurant in Melbourne as I was quite disappointed with the other existing ones in the past. But this one definitely gave me back the confidence in German / Austrian foods. I love their sausage, schnitzel, pork knuckle, sauerkraut and the dark ale, simply HEAVENLY. Their wait staff are awesome too. This is just too good to be true.
Hope they can keep this up in terms of quality of foods and customer service. Not easy to find a cosy, stress free and comfortable place with good foods these days.

We have now been to Gasthaus on Queens half a dozen times with different groups of friends. I’m German having lived in Australia for a long time.with some bigger competitors around they have carved a wonderful niche into German dining.we go back regularly now. Food great and authentically prepared. I hope you will be around for a long time

Can't recommend Gasthaus enough! Fantastic Southern German/Austrian food, cooked to absolute perfection and served like you would get it in Vienna, Linz & Salzburg.
The authenticity extends to the drinks menu, so much so you can even get an Almdudler if normal soft drink is too boring for you.
Finally, super-friendly & helpful staff & super clean in these COVID times.
S. G.
Phenomenal food and service, would definitely recommend the banquet here.

Omg, I was in food heaven at Gasthaus on Queen ...!! Soulfood that felt like home to me. 😊
Seriously, this is the best quality and most authentic Austrian/German food I had here in Melbourne. Lovely service and great atmosphere too.
Can't wait to go again very soon!!

Finally an Austrian restaurant that is far more than a bierkeller! Modern and stylish setting coupled with genuine Austrian fare (we lived in Switzerland for the last 7 years). I had the Rindergulasch and my wife had the Wienerschnitzel. They were both excellent! The Kaiserschmarrn topped it off brilliantly! Und mann kann auch in Deutsch sprechen

Food was decent - pork knuckle was crispy on the outside, but the meat was a bit bland. Everything else was fine. Owner was nice and service was superb.

This is such a fun new spot. Stopped in for lunch and had amazing service from Tim and the restaurant manager (Toby). They helped me decide from the menu and suggested a lovely glass of red. Definitely looking forward to coming back soon for dinner with friends. Thanks you guys!

Love the food. In particular, the Schnitzel is great and all the dessert are divine.
And the team is amazing. True German Gastfreundlichkeit

Dumpling soup to die for.
Generous serves. Great service. Delicious strudel in a nice setting. You can choose to sit in a more relaxed setting downstairs on high stools or upstairs in the more formal dining area. Has only been open for a few weeks but booking is a must.

If you like meat you're in for a treat. The pork knuckle and schnitzel were delicious. Service was a little slow.

Great food, nice service, great new venue. At last an Austrian restaurant in the CBD!!We loved the Käsespätzle-one of the best we’ve tasted. Not so keen on the Schlager music so had to deduct one star:(

Wow, these guys went above and beyond. If you wanted to support a local business during a time when they need it the most order food from here! Delicious!
