Comments of Gypsy and Pig

A MUST VISIT for authentic, quality Japanese. If I could, I'd give this restaurant a SIX! Hands down one of the BEST restaurants in Melbourne and even in the world. Fantastic service, amazing pork and entrees dishes, and an overall great value. Highly highly recommend.
F. C.
Our experience here was amazing!
The Scotch Eggs were unique and scrumptious
The Hamburg with Cheese was delicious and filling, the salad and potato salad were great too
The Pork Eyefillet and Oysters were amazing, especially the oyster.
The chefs know what they are doing! The staff were nice and attentive, and the ambience was good. The prices are great for the quality and skill for these dishes!
It does get packed during peak hours though, so make sure to book in advance!
D. N.
The ambience was nice, it did remind me of a small restaurant in Japan. The katsu sandwich was a bit disappointing as the pork cutlet was very small compared to the bread. The pork Hamburg steak with cheese didn't really stand out to me, I wish I was given a lot more veges on the side to cut through the oiliness of the batter. I was glad to have experienced it but I probably wouldn't come again
P. H.
Fantastic food and service. Been trying different dishes and my favourite so far are tuna carpaccio, omurice and tonkatsu! White hot pot is perfect for winter-like weather as well. Will be back and try some more for 100%
L. D.
Delightful experience, lovely staff and really fantastic food. Will definitely be back.
S. L.
First time coming here. It was a pleasant experience, humble food with great flavour. Would definitely come back here again and try different menu, it seems like their katsu Don is a must try (everyone orders that).
A. G.
Excellent service and amazing pork dishes..all their sides were great compliments as well. Everything had some care and quality. Will return.
D.
Went with a group of three and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated, so learn from our mistake and book in advance if going in a group (especially during dinner time). Regardless, the food tasted amazing and contained high-quality ingredients. Although the place is better suited to smaller groups for dining in, the low-light ambience is a nice touch.
D. H.
5 stars for the foods and cocktails! The place is small, so booking is essential.
The service is excellent. The server carefully explains the food and how to eat it best, and I had Special Fry Mix meal set, Grilled Shabu-shabu, and a glass of Cassis Oolong cocktail. It’s a perfect place for date, but maybe not for group booking (more than 4 persons).
B. M.
Special pork decor and menu. Good atmosphere and very good service. Food was well presented and tasty.
A. P.
A good vibe and must try.
The food taste good better than average but it certainly not amazing. The katsu is thick and crispy but the appetisers is a bit underwhelming.
The vibe and service are amazing. I would definitely give the service a 5 star rating. The staffs are nice and very welcoming
Overall is a very good dining experience.
L. F.
Awesome, authentic, Japanese food. I recommend the Hire-katsu set and beef tataki.
W. B.
I actually can’t believe how good the sashimi was. Never in my life have I had that quality of sushi. It was beautiful really. Honestly, a must dine. I only walked in by chance wanting to try somewhere new and now I will need to go every week.
A. A.
Nice casual place for a quick meal. They have a lot of variety in the menu, the tonkatsu and creamy crab croquette were not as crispy as I expected but still quite delicious. Portion wasn't paticularly big but enough to feel satisfied. Tonkatsu sauce and salad dressing are self-serve so you can season your meal to your taste.
G. B.
Restaurant with pork menu as a selling point It can be said that the decoration of the restaurant will focus on pork, especially from the shop sign. Until the raw materials of food This restaurant is Japanese fusion food. There are many menus to choose from. Recommended menus made from pork All dishes are delicious. Should reserve seats first Because a lot of customers No booking may not have seats.
M. K.
Definitely a hidden gem. The best pork Japanese bento in the city if you are pork lover. Their deep fried pork is so chunky, tasty, and importantly not oily. Cooked to perfection. There are sauces can help yourself to eat the pork by adding additional flavors. Bento set is free when you order main dish as lunch, saving $8. The little restaurant decorated very pretty, you can see pig cartoons everywhere. Fully Japanese owned restaurant with best food quality. Must book regardless what time you go. Very limited tables. Large groups is situable if booked. Located in small laneway. Very close to public transport. Car parks nearby. Prices are standard as per Japanese cusine.
e.
recommend the red hot pot. It is really good, we will come back for that again.
M. K.
In winter season, make sure you book your table especially on weekends! Anyways worthy place to go with friends, in a small group.
z. c.
Call to book a table if you wanna sit inside. Place is small, but food is good.
R. L.
Delicious authentic japanese food in a cosy setting. Staff are all very friendly as well
W. Y.
In Melbourne and decided to give this place a try. Service was quick and efficient. Had the rib eye set with a beer for dinner. It ended up being $41 for one person which is very expensive when you think about it. Compared to other tonkatsu places I have visited in other cities, it really isn't anything special. Not bad but nothing that makes it standout except for all the pig figures around the restaurant.
A. H.
Pork was of good quality and the shredded cabbage was close to what I had in Japan, also rice was perfectly cooked. The only downside is the meat portion was small
l. c.
The best tonkatsu in Melbourne! Sweet and delicious japanese style restaurant. They make the best pudding in the 🌎!!! Love it so much!
Y. Z.
My Korean friend says this shop opened one year ago in Melbourne, and it was a chain store that is very popular in Korea, although I don't know whether it is authentic or not, but it is tasty.
E. A.
Delicious food. Chef Kenji's does wonders in this small venue with open kitchen. You can see him prep the food and also what's happening in the kitchen. The quality of the sashimi is divine (apparently Tuesday it's there freshest), wagyu beef tataki... We can't get enough of it. Just melts in your mouth. And there tonkatsu, so crispy and juicy. Why go anywhere else? We love it and we always come back.
B.
You must try the Tuna Carpaccio
Staff are super nice, the Chef is a master of his craft Putting on a great display in the center of this lovely venue
R. J.
Authentic Japanese fare lovingly handcrafted in front of you in this small but cosy and above all welcoming restaurant. Staff are all polite and accommodating and it's clear the menu is meticulously curated. Use of fine ingredients makes this a treat even for seasoned Japanese food lovers. A must try.
S. F.
Authentic Japanese pork dishes in a groovy little restaurant. Well priced and top quality. Enjoyed my pork belly and egg served in a full lunch set with rice, miso, salmon and pickle sides.
D. P.
I didn’t know what to expect but was reminded why I love Melbourne. I chose the chicken katsu curry which was better than I’d hoped for, and edamame beans. Music and vibe was great, and where else is Tuesday dumpling and massage night?! Very cool
J. B.
I go here a lot with friends after work, and this is now one of my favourite Japanese places in Melbourne. It has a very authentic feel, in everything from the polite and friendly service, to the beautiful set meals, to the quality and care taken in preparing and serving the food. The tonkatsu is one of the best I've had outside Japan, and they serve it with all the proper accoutrements: tonkatsu sauce, hot mustard, and they serve it on the little grill shelf that keeps the panko crumbs crispy and crunchy. The staff here all seem to be Japanese, and very politely tolerate my efforts to order in Japanese, which keeps my language skills fresh, too. 😊🇯🇵 Top tip: share the dessert selection between friends, and savour the deliciousness of Japanese sweets.
A. B.
They have a great drinks and the food is great! A great selection of Japanese delights on the menu at really reasonable prices. Been a few times and never disappointed.
F. F.
Fantastic Katsu Curry! Service is really nice and the place has a lot of personality. I would recommend it to all the fans of Japanese food that want to go beyond sushi.
M. O.
Had dinner here on a Saturday night and ordered the shabu shabu for two, pork ton kotsu, pork katsu curry and mixed tempura.
Good: the shabu shabu and tonkotsu were really good and I'd definitely recommend them. The soup was sweet and the serving of pork was generous for the shabu shabu. You can taste the quality of the meat and it didn't have a strong smell to it unlike the ones you'd normally get from a butcher.
Bad: the wait time for the shabu shabu was a little long especially with the time limit that they give you. The mixed tempura was just really really oily which was disappointing.
We'll definitely want to go back for the shabu shabu and some other side dishes too. Pricey but well worth it.
G. S.
5 stars for service.
I am a person who always "judges"a place based on ratings..usually go for 4.5 and up. Especially recent ones
I was a bit weary at first esp cause some feedback was about service but..the staff were lovely and out of the 4 dishes we ate (shared between 3 of us).. we ordered another one again cause it was so good !!(I think it was the special..the grilled pork sukiyaki or from the menu smoked pork belly something)
The sake I had was also really good. My friend ordered the sochu but said she didn't really like it. Other than that though.. don't be discouraged to try this place out! Definitely worth a visit !
P. V.
Everything was perfect! Our group secured a 1.5hr long sitting and it was just enough to sample some of the menu. We could not have another bite and we were able to comfortably dine during this time because of the efficient and friendly service.
Booking was painful because it can only be made over a single line phone with no voicemail, but worth it when we could. Cosy restaurant so it gets booked up fast. Reservations are a must.
R. D.
Took the trouble of finding us seats without a reservation, calling us when they were ready. Lovely chicken katsu curry, tender pork. Very reasonably priced.
蔡.
Nice Japanese food, but the restaurant is quite small and if you wanna go there, it is better to get reservation
W.
Food is actually pretty good, love the omu rice and crab croquettes, but they're kinda overpriced
Q. K.
Authentic Japanese, run by actual Japanese staff, not those many imitator Koreans who have little-to-no experience in Japan!
Tasty kare-raisu made from scratch, as you can find in Kansai region of Japan. High-quality, correct ingredients that are not polluted with extra ingredients of imitators.
Besides the all-Japanese staff, there are many patrons who are Japanese, which is the sign of ethnic authenticity of a restaurant.
J. W.
Authentic Japanese food that you can find in Melbourne CBD. Recommend omelette rice and daily special.
P. ..
Very yummy and good service.
M. C.
The food here is so of the best I have ever had. The beef tataki is incredible and the pork hot pot is amazing, would recommend 10/10.
M. T.
Great オムライス!I have been here three times and it never make me disappointed! Cute waitress with cool cook! ありがとう!
T. K.
The only place I could find that served tonkatsu. It's delicious but a bit pricey. But I guess I should expect that when dining in Downtown Melbourne. Friendly staff!
D. S.
Awesome food and ambience!
You know a place is good when they have a open kitchen so you can see how they cook...and they work like a beautifully run machine to produce tasty food.
If you love pork dishes, this is recommended.
I loved the mix fry dish - the fried pork hamburger with cheese was excellent.
L. L.
I really loved the Scotch eggs. Would definitely come back to try the rest of the menu.
E. Y. L. L.
Katsudon is just delicious, period. Lunch is cheaper than dinner (around a $10 difference for a set)
J. G.
Delicious japanese food..nice staff..
0. a.
I ordered eye fillet tonkatsu with meal set. The meal includes rice, miso soup and two side dishes. The tonkatsu was very decent and delicious but the rice was very dry and the miso soup tasted like cheap instant one. Also one of the side dishes didn't have much taste and the portion was so little. It was good experience even though considering those.
P. J.
Love the authenticity of this place. The food is amazing every time, the quality and presentation spot on! They have some really fun and different entrees, but the Katsu is to die for! Staff are very friendly, and the venue itself is really cut and inviting!
K. S.
The portion is small, the panko crumbs are not crispy, and the juiciness of the meat is just so so. The tonkatsu sauce is tasty but I still prefer to eat it with just salt. Overall not bad but quite disappointing, especially for its price.
洪.
The best Japanese food in Melbourne that I have ever had! Every dish is amazing!
Most main dishes are pork cuisine which always amaze you. I like their chicken wing gozya and soybean based hot pot.
Staffs are very friendly and nice.
Whenever I'm in Melbourne, I always want to come here as many times as possible ❤️
c.
Renowned for their handmade katsu and kurobuta pork dishes. Had a katsu and fried oyster on the side as well. I think the fried oyster tasted better than the main dish katsu. The oyster was fresh and the panko coating is not too thick. Overall, good quality food, but a little bit over priced. Toilet is located outside of the restaurant.
B. S.
I am Japanese living in Melbourne for last couple of decade and this is still the best Japanese restaurant in my mind.
I am a fun of Japanese curry and tried so many places in Japan and Aus but Gypsy and Pig makes THE BEST Japanese Curry.
If you like Japanese curry, don’t look any further, this is the place.
Other dishes are always consistent as well. It’s a small dishes so order a few and share.
J. S.
This place never fails to please! Always delicious and a great atmosphere
R. W.
The food was so delicious. All pork dishes we ordered were perfectly cooked, moist and juicy. The services were good, waitresses were very busy but they looked after every guest.
K. H.
Love this place! Delicious food, friendly staff, speedy service. I felt like I was back in Japan❤️
Highly recommend!
a. t.
The absolute best modern Japanese you can find in Melbourne. Excellent service, fantastic food, great mood.
A friendly reminder - Gypsy & Pig have two seatings an evening. Do not expect to waltz in after 9pm and expect service. Try to book ahead.
J. W.
The tonkatsu was really good - the batter was very authentic and tasted like various good tonkatsu restaurants I've tried in Japan.
The Sashimi was very fresh as well.
Would highly recommend this place 🙂
j.
Well, I just really love authentic Japanese food. Even Omurice. Although I wish it looked like the one that I've seen on Youtube. Anyway, Youtube was all visual. And Gypsy & Pig's was tasty and well presented as well. Can be quite spendy.
M.
So tasty. It's good atmosphere for special dinner, but little bit pricey compare to amount. So it's better to go at Lunch time.
J. A.
I came here once last time I went to Melbourne and by far the best Pork Cutlets I’ve had in AU (I’ve lived in Sydney and Brisbane and there’s none as good as this!) the place is nice and cozy too :)
J. L.
Fantastic food and wonderful service. Staff are very friendly and food is authentic Japanese with a slight twist. One of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne.
R. L.
I was here twice. First time around, I just bumped into the place. Then I realized I like the atmosphere and the food. I went there a second time after a year or so (I do not live in Melbourne) and it's still good.
B. C.
It's my first time visiting this restaurant, staff were quite friendly served with Japanese style customer service. Food wasn't bad, but a bit pricey.
J. W.
Piggies everywhere!!!
Come here if you want to share your love for good pork. They serve kurobuta!
Stuffed chicken wings are stuffed with a kurobuta gyoza and deep fried. Boneless bite into the wing and gyoza.
Kurobuta Hamburg with cheddar was good. Deep fried and delicious.
M. L.
Overpriced and very limited space. Decent service but could be better. Food tasted alright but too expensive though.
h. N.
I've been coming her for 5 years and have never had a bad experience. The food and ambience is always wonderful, that wuth attentive service.
B. M.
Delicious, authentic Japanese. For $25 I got the special: katsu curry and 7 pieces of sashimi, miso soup and condiments!
J. B.
Great little restaurant. Lots of atmosphere and tasty Tonkatsu - reminded me of Japan!
P. K.
Tasty foods & great atmosphere
J. T.
Don't have to fly to Japan now
S.
Really delicious katsudon, probably best place in Melbourne to get this. Very authentic though the price is high compared to Japan - but almost everything Japanese is more expensive here than in Japan :(
R. M.
Authentic experience, house made sources, variety of choices, friendly staff. Affordable price considering the quality of the food.
杨.
my favorite japanese restuarant. dessert set is must try. salmon is sooo nice. it looks like the seceret place that only several people knows
S. L.
Good food, good service, comfortable experience
C. D.
Great food and services.Thank you..Not expensive at all, reasonable price range. Will come back again.
R. “. R. W.
Great food and atmosphere. Come here regularly as the food is great. Small intimate atmosphere with beer on tap. Highly recommended.
H. S.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Definitely will be back
r. h.
Food is really fantastic but price is too much expensive than taste and quality.
J. B.
Had the beef takaki, sushi, pork katsu curry - good food, smallish portions but good service tonight - guess we got lucky!
R. H.
Amazing pork. Good service. We had the braised pork and the steamed pork and shared the dishes. It was just heavenly!
E. L.
Eye fillet katsu don was good.
But all the dishes was bit small for me..
M. H.
Amazing food! One of my most favourite Japanese restaurants in Melbourne
C. K.
Friendly staffs and awesome interior in addition to the delicious meals. I ordered the omelette rice and it was amazing!
F. X.

Y. J.
Very good tonkatsu by Melbourne standards.Decent range of pork including black pork (Kurobuta).
B. M.
Fantastic food and service
B. N.
Actual Japanese food made amazingly. Great staff and service.
B. Z.
Pretty good food, would recommend the udon noodles or omelette rice.
It is quite pricey.
E. L.
Taste are not bad, service was good.
Prices a bit high, portions a bit small.
C. J.
Delicious, great staff and wonderful meal.
G. S.
Great Pork Loin Katsu and omelette rice
P. V.
A special place to go to, pork katsu quality is definitely great, sushi as well.
A. F.
Yummy food but wish the portion for Tonkatsu was bigger
B. B. B.
Food is great but service not so much. Very slow staff service and not really paying attention to camping customers.
G. S.
The food is nice but portions are very tiny
O. C.
Food was pricey for the portion and taste. Good service tho.
G. C.
Undoubtedly, the best Tonkatsu in Melbourne! As close to the real deal as you'll get.
P. C. T.
Best omurice I've ever eaten. Price is too much on the high side.
A.
Great lunch deals prepped in front of you. Xlnt Japanese food.
E.
Nice enough and food is tasty but it's overpriced for the portion size.
S. L.
Best tonkatsu I've tasted in the whole of Melbourne
S. L.
The tonkatsu was a little underwhelming compared to what you would get in Japan
J. C. L.
No new addition to the menu and food quality still maintained.
A. D.
Great katsu snd atmosphere. Will definitely come again
j. t.
Yummy pork dishes! So good!
S. K.
Closest experience you will get for a tonkatsu restaurant outside Tokyo.

(Translated) The miso soup shouldn't be bought outside, the miso has a lot of flavor.
The eye fillet tastes like a croquette. . . The meat inside is loose, and the taste does not go in.
Omurice is worthy of the signature, the egg is tender and tender, the ketchup/mayonnaise is sweet and sour, the rice inside is like beef rice, the aroma is overflowing, the egg and ketchup just neutralize this feeling, perfect.
(Original)

(Translated) When I go to this restaurant to eat, I always think of the late-night cafeteria. I think this kind of small restaurant is very suitable for winter nights. There is a demon wind outside, and sitting in a warm and dim interior feels particularly warm. Watching the uncle chef cook each dish seriously, he will be full of respect for the food that he brings. I went there for the first time in the evening after the due date. After eating, I felt that people finally came alive hahaha. Recommend omelet rice and soy milk soup, stone pot rice is also ok, fried rice is very oily, not recommended.
