First time and for sure not the last one.
Staff was very lovely.
Food delicious.
We order the feast platter. It says for 2-3 people but we were 5 and we almost couldn't finish it. So much food!
There was live music and that made the whole experience more delightful.
Very recommended. Also, a good place to celebrate birthdays and other sort of big gatherings.

If you’re looking for traditional German food and beer, this is the perfect place to come! We dined on a Friday evening and were able to enjoy live music while enjoying our beer and extremely flavorsome food!
Great that they offer a free 300ml beer if you have tickets for the theatre later that night too.
Will be returning again!
J. S.
We came here on Friday night, and the place was buzzing with people and the live band!
We ordered the Lemon Schnitzel - freshly crumbed matters marinated and freshly crumbed chicken breast, chips, slaw, Bavarian mayo. It was out of this world!!! The best in the city.
Great selection of Bavarian beer.
Make sure you book a table, as it gets packed very quickly.
Super friendly service, and quick.
T.
What a fun place. We arrived to hear the band banging out some tunes which was fun.
Hofbrauhaus has some great beers, no surprises there I hear you say lol. My Maisel's Weissbeir was fantastic and you've gotta love a stein hahaha. The Rothaus Pilsner was crisp, light and tasty.
They also have a new range of vegetarian options which my partner enjoyed such as the cabbage rolls and the potato salad. We didn't try the new vegetarian gnocci this time but we are definitely going back.
The pretzels are imported from Germany and they hit the table piping hot! OMGosh they are amaaazing. I could have eaten these all night haha.
My pork knuckle was fantastic. Cripsy on the outside, with soft juicy meat that literally fell of the bone. This was perfect. The meat was a little salty, and so moorish.
Thanks for the collab.
A. L.
Had a platter to share between 3 adults. It was so filling and delicious we couldn't even finish it. The live band were amazing and the staff really nice. It was my first time there, will definitely go back.

This is a really authentic Bavarian restaurant!
I was born and raised in Bavaria until I was 18, when I walked into this place I had high expectations and they were certainly met!
The servers are wearing dirndl and lederhosn ( traditional Bavarian attire), there's a Bavarian flag and lots of fitting decorations, the way the restaurant is built inside is like a typical 'Wirtshaus' too and there was even a LIVE BAND! I was stunned, I loved it, they were great!
It was super loud inside which is typical for a place like that back home, so be prepared 😂 I bet not everyone expects that!
Our server (Tim? Sam? Sorry i dont remember!) was very nice and he was german too, even better!
We ordered Käsespätzle, lemon Schnitzel, a breze and of course beer. My partner was delighted, the Schnitzel and beer was great. The pretzel was as good as it could, I don't think they were selfmade but the frozen ones that you just throw in the oven for a bit. To be honest that didn't bother me, I know they're a lot of work and they still tasted good, I will order one again next time. Authentic pretzels are hard to come by in Australia and this one was very close anyway.
The only thing I was extremely disappointed in was the Käsespätzle unfortunately. In Bavaria your Spätzle get roasted with butter, cheese is added and Crispy onions on top, that's it.
The one I had was super saucy and oily(which can be seen on the photo too). It came with tomatoes and spinach but I ordered it without that because it doesn't belong in there anyway. While eating it all I could taste was oil, it was so overpowering I couldn't taste anything else.
My partner tried and said it was delicious and we ended up swapping meals, he has never tasted the original though so doesnt have a comparisonlike I do. It wasn't a bad dish but it definitely wasn't authentic or what I am used too from home.
Maybe that could be worked on.
Would also love to see both kinds of Knödel on the menu as well as some kind of Braten, like Sauerbraten.
Overall it was GREAT and we will be back to try other things on the menu! 🥨🍻

I have been coming to Hofbrauhaus for over a decade, and the quality has consistently remained high. The authenticity of cuisine and hospitality is always a highlight. I tried their Feast Platter for the first time last week, and it was excellent.
The crispiness of the pork knuckle crackling was utterly impressive. The knuckle was tender and piping hot. However, I did feel it needed a better sauce to enhance the flavour, as the pork jus was bland and didn't add anything; I avoided it entirely. The pork belly was rather bland too, only redeemed by the bed of red cabbage underneath it. The lemon schnitzel and sausages were excellent, as usual – I particularly enjoyed the cheese kransky and ham steak. The accompaniments and sides were delicious too.
All in all, a very grand, filling meal. Definitely come hungry for it!
Z. Z.
Great portions, crispy skin! The pretzel was delicious. The smashed potatoes were super creamy!
M.
Really cool to experience a more esoteric cuisine thats executed so well. I am not an expert in Bavarian cuisine, however the food was very different in a good way. prices average $25-35(ish) and the staff was very friendly and generous. Worth it.
J. H.
Authentic German food. Large meals that are reasonably priced. Fun, entertaining live music. Flavoured beer. Friendly and welcoming staff. Nice warm cosy atmosphere.
M. C.
Absolutely exceptional food, I literally can't stop telling everyone I know about how great an experience I had here. High quality food, good portions, fair prices, and the atmosphere feels like you've stepped back in time into a Prussian Bier hall. Will definitely be back soon and highly recommend the pork belly.
S. R. S.
The food was extremely delicious, the staffs are very attentive and friendly. The vibe of the place was nice and the place also clean and tidy. The mushroom schnitzel, the pork schnitzel and the bratwurst were the real winner. Definitely come back again!
S. T.
As a first timer in this German restaurant, I can assure anyone that it's totally worth it to come here.
If you might be on a tight budget, there are some few foods you can pick like the Bretzel and some starters, but you should know, this AUTHENTIC restaurant doesn't only cater for the food but the entertainment provided is worth its money.
To anyone looking for some unknown camaraderie among its clients joined by the fun and energitic music along with your bier... this is your spot!!!
Foods in the pic:
Bretzel, Apfelstrudel and Käsespätzle
😎👌

The balance of the meals were amazing.
Absolutely fill you up if you're hungry. Even the soup of the day is massive. No wonder why the waitress asked if it was a main or entree.
Would come back for dinner and some nice vibes.
d. m.
Goood very good atmosphere friendly staff very good music excellent food, recommended beers the children enjoyed everything.
S. L.
The environment and music was fabulous! Definitely a good place for weekends and friends gathering. Prepare your stomach cuz the food was really in a great amount.
J. H.
We were welcomed by an extremely friendly staff member called Natalie who made our visit and amazing one the entire time we were there. She took care of us throughout our night. Besides the amazing customer service the food was also fantastic with short wait times aswel. The atmosphere of the place was great with good music playing. Will definitely be coming back, highly recommend!
N. C.
Really tasty food and beer here. Sharing platter is really worth the money. I can see why everyone loves the pork knuckle here. It's perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and goes perfectly with a cold German beer :D
S. S.
Everything is great at this place
loved the food
Love the ambience
Loved the place
Love the service
Must and should try a bar in Melbourne
The greman beers were really great
m. W.
Called for a snack and a beer. Lively atmosphere with German music on a Saturday night
A. L.
Really nice venue, came during the day so it very quiet. Staff are super friendly and nice and attentive!
*edited my review after seeing the restaurants response, great customer service
M. C.
I’m amazed that they had a variety of vegetarian options, and the cauliflower steak was delicious!!! Lovely ambiance too and staff were friendly. Great service!
A. M.
Impressive restaurant and atmosphere. We ordered the typical pork knuckle and it was delicious. Also the beef snitzchel was very yummy
a. r.
The original and best. Awesome beer and food as any Bavarian would expect! Absolutely buzzing to get back soon!
C. V.
Absolute number one for me hands down 🏆favorite place to get a Beer weather your with a freinds wanting a feast or just a drink this place has it all! A Bar a Restaurant & a Beer hall... the food is awesome🥩🍖🥨 and the Bier is unbelievable 🍺🍻🍻🍻🍺
I Highly Recommend Hofbräuhaus Melbourne for dinner a Bier or a celebration! There's nothing quite as good in my opinion!
E. R.
Staff: friendly
Food: delicious. I ordered Swiss schnitzel which was tasty.
The drink was good too (Radler)
The only thing that might annoy you is the noise. I measured the noise level. In average it was 85 dB!
However it can be fun for some people.
I recommend them.
R. S.
What an amazing place, still the authentic original German Feel, and fun place with amazing Food and Service. We all need a happy place where you can forget the stress we all have gone through with Covid for the past 2 years. I highly recommend this place if you want to forget all your troubles for one night.
S.
Awesome time. Probably the best staff ever who are so friendly and have astounding memories. Lovely atmosphere and sometime there are music and bands. Best food ever too
J. C.
Great place for dinner. Service was excellent. Schnitzel was enormous - sorry I forgot to take a picture as was so distracted by the size of it. I recommend highly to anyone looking to go here.
S. L.
Pork knuckle was perfectly cooked. Tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.
B. T.
Perfection. I’ve been coming here for more than a decade and it’s always been perfect. Missing this place is one of the hardest things about not living in Melbourne any more, it’ll be the first place I eat next time I’m back. Honestly one of the best places to eat in the entire country.
J. R.
Can't go wrong with the pork knuckle and a side of spätzle
D.
One of the best German restaurants in Melbourne, with an interesting variety of delicious entrees and mains that can be shared with a small to medium sized group. Hofbrauhaus Melbourne also has a great ambience, nice seating arrangements and very helpful and polite staff. Hope to see some live music/entertainment the next time we visit and maybe even try their beers!
P. B.
Nothing to say but, do yourself a favour and go to that magnificent place. Prost!!!
J. L. M.
If you've been to the Bavarian before, you'll feel right at home here (even more so). Staff were incredibly friendly, Schnitzel was cooked to perfection and the theming was very much on point (room design, waiter dress code). There's also live music on the weekends, though I went mid week. Highly recommend this for a authentic German food experience.
A. C.
Classic Bavarian-style pub (complete with a classic uniform) around Chinatown. The food is plentiful and tasty (we ate for 2 days with leftover!) and excellent Dunkel beer. I was not thrilled by the strong smell of food as soon as you enter (probably the staff are tolerant so they don't notice it anymore). I'll be back and will probably dine at the October fest-style benches outside.
L. M.
We had our work Christmas party here last night.
I can not thank the restaurant enough, amazing food wonderful wait staff, fantastic ambience with the band playing music and interacting with the audience. Loved it can't wait to bring my own family here, thank you so much😍❤️
M. Z.
Such a lovely restaurant! Loved the food, music and overall atmosphere. The waitress named Marsha was super friendly and welcoming.
K. W.
Best sausages ever! They were so juicy when I bit, the juices almost got to the table next to me! And for course their craft beer on tap is just 👍🏻👌🏻✨
If you're planning to order the pork knuckle, make sure you're hungry, their serving portion is so huge I nearly died.
T.
Great German restaurant that's been around Melbourne for a few years.
Good selection of different German dishes, the two we tried are both pretty good.
Service is prompt and friendly. Live music is great as well.
Good selection of beers 👌
There are two entrances, the one closer to Bourke Street side is the restaurant section.
N. A.
Had a fantastic time at the new ‘Hof Downtown’ last night! Not only did we enjoy our meal and Bavarian beers, the service was fantastic. We Had Giri and Natalie looking after our table last night and they were absolutely awesome! Truly made our night! Definitely will be heading over for another meal soon!
Vielen Dank!
M. F. C.
My sons love the food and portion here. We ordered a huge platter that is good for 3 German. In it there are a huge pork trotter, at the sides are the chicken schnitzel, on the other side is the sausages, vegetables, mash potatoes. Beers come in a huge solid mug. At the door one will be greeted by a German with straight face, and German dry humour. One may feel insulted with his straight face dry humour.
S. E.
Great German food and such a lively vibe with lots of singing and dancing and cheering! We had a really good time and the platters are worth having a taste of everything. Go for the 1L beers if you're planning to have a couple. And the mango or passion fruit flavoured beer is worth a try! The eggplant chips are pretty amazing too! The waiters and waitresses here are very responsive and check on us numerous times during the night.
A. T.
Nice food. Great assortment of menu items. Well priced. Great atmosphere as a beer hall. Friendly staff. Great beer choices.
A. B.
This place deserves a 3.5 star rating.
I have been to this place twice and both the times the experience was completely opposite.
The first time I was seated downstairs where an amazing band was playing, crowd was great and the food was really good.
But the second time was completely different. I got a table upstairs, the place was quieter. But the ambience of the place was really nice. I wanted to have good food in not a very loud place so this was perfect for me.
Coming to the food: i got myself some sausages, schnitzel and a starter wias potato and bacon. The flavour of the sausages was just great, and with the awesome saukeraut the whole dish was just on the next level.
Schnitzel was goooood, chicken was fresh and juicy and the chips were hot and crispy.
Service wise this place was alright. I got a wrong order but I didnot want to wait any longer so I didn't return it, but it should not have happened in the first place. When another server found out that i had got wrong order she was really nice to offer me a free shot, but I dont drink so that one went to waste.
I would highly recommend this restaurant who likes to eat meat or loves amazingly flavoured sausages.
P. R.
We had a great lunch today at this authentic German restaurant. The beer selection was great as was the very German menu. I started with a bretztel, a large German pretzel. I followed this with jaegerfleisch with mushroom sauce. After the big meal we had a kirschwasser schnaps. We finished off with chocolate cake.
J. L.
As a big group of 29 during Friday's busy lunch hour, the mandated pre-ordering ensured we had fast service.
The positives: the food arrived soon after we did, general consensus on the tasty dishes, generous portions, options for a smaller and cheaper lunch menu as well as enormous sharing platters for those intent on feasting, beer in 3 sizes including the 1 litre stein.
The not so smooth part: confusion during meals delivery when I told them the same thing 5 times and settling the bill as some were allowed to pay at the counter but most were not.
Overall people enjoyed the quick meal and thought it was a good experience. The clincher was my Bavarian colleague who was initially reluctant to come while coaching me on pronunciation, but ultimately gave the food a nod of approval.
N. A.
Went here for brunch and wasn't disappointed. We got a share platter and were fit to burst by the time we finished eating. The food was delicious, so much so I didn't even have the patience to take photos until it was all gone. The staff were friendly and efficient and attenative. I would recommend this establishment to anyone and can't wait to go back. Only negative. They're slightly more expensive than some other German places we have been to and their menu range was slightly smaller.
S. L.
Must have pork knuckle, would recommend at least three people to share. Enjoyed the food, the beer and the service. Definitely coming back!
I. L.
We had a great time in this restaurant. The place had the feel of a traditional German tavern, and we felt as if we were faraway in Germany. Lovely traditional German garb, food and drinks.
We ordered several dishes, the platter with the pork knuckle, pork belly, sausages and the schnitzel, together with other sides. The platter was enormous and while stated on the menu as being able to feed 2-3, it can easily feed 4-5 moderate diners. Sides such as eggplant chips and German egg noodles were really good. We were very satisfied after this meal. Would love to be back.
M. C.
Went here for a friends birthday, the food was very tasty and amongst everything going on the service very fast. The band was fun, this is not a quiet venue so it is hard to have a chat and hear others. You are also encouraged to dance at your table when the bang plays
F. F.
Pork was moist and perfectly cracked. Simple food done perfectly. Beer was great too. Hoff lager, which I'm taking as the house beer, clean, crisp and refreshing. The music was great too. All you would expect from a themed traditional restaurant. Great work guys and girls who all looked fantastic too. A great night out.
F. W.
Have been there three times. The service and food are great. Live cheerful music on Friday nights. Large portions for a fair price. Enjoyed the complete platter among a group of five and everyone was too full to move.
J.
If you want a beer hall, you got a beer hall. Food is okay, not for vegetarians or the light hearted. Although you could just order the bretzel and a salad and be satisfied. Bretzels are hot homemade doughy inside and crunchy outside - so good. Sorry I devoured it before I took a photo. Make sure you book or get there before they open this is a super popular place for work get togethers. They have specials for lunch and all the staff are german so the ambience is for real. Not fine dining, don't expect to be wowed, expect to have fun.
N. H.
Well it is always strange to find a German Restaurant in Australia in the middle of China Town. It was such a cool experience in going to Bavarian restaurant. The waiters and waitresses are in costumes as well.
They had a German Cola as well. Well the food wasn't that great, I ordered kaeaespaetzle which did not have any flavor in it. That was a dissappointment with the unique experience.
J.
Feels like a German beer hall, right here in Melbourne. Generous portion sizes. A BIG pork knuckle, good for sharing. And a nice veal schnitzel. The beer was great. Had a passionfruit tasting one- very fruity and refreshing!
A. L.
Crispy pork knuckle, soft and juicy meat.
Great for people who like a bit of crispy crackling, tender meat and fatty bits of the joint.
Schnitzels are made with real meat and very reasonably sized.
With the entertainment book it is great value with buy one get one free (up to $40).
J. C.
Really great experience. The staffs are super nice and friendly. Recommend the German pork knuckle and sausages!
S. A.
Yummy, and wow, so tasty, and reasonable price, a fantastic place to try German food.
I.
$$ They do state that it's an Australia's most authentic German Beer House, I would argue that Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills would be more authentic for German beer houses. But it is a fun spot, the food I had was good. You go for a laugh and German styled beers. The platter for 2-3 feed us 5. So good value and portions
R. V. K.
Their HB Platter provides good variety for any taster of German cuisine, pork knuckle beautifully cooked, Shnitzel platter had good sized portions, service was warm and welcoming, food came quick, Good location, very fulfilling, would recommend greatly.
D. H.
If you want the full Bavarian experience, this is the place. Tasty food including massive German sausage share plates, and plenty of beers on tap. Bretzel, pork knuckle, and ask the rest. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
M. !.
Best pub ive been to in a long time!! Wonderful service, food and a great selection of beer! Great place to go to with a group of mates or even family. Live music is very entertaining though a bit loud at times 😝 amazing!!
A. H.
First time visit for my wife and I last night 😊 Can only describe the entree, mains and dessert as magnificent 😋😋😋 10/10… we will be back soon. Thanks guys and girls 👏👏👍
M. N.
Really good German Food and Beer, with a fun environment. Only downside is that they are too enthusiastic to move people on for later seating.
B. B.
Hofbräuhaus is always a classic. Live music, fresh hot pretzels and huge craft German beers. What is not to love!
O. S.
This is probably one of the oldest german joints in the city. Someone might think it is little too touristy, but its fun for most people who haven’t been to a German restaurant. It offers everything you would expect from a German pub. Bar maids with traditional outfits, german beers, gigantic pork knuckle with pickle cabbage and a lot of sausages. It even has a live band performance which plays some german classics. This is a great place to catch up with your mates in town. I would recommend sharing a couple of large dishes. So you get to try different sausages. Not a place you go on regular basis if you are working on your six packs.
C. W.
Authentic food, Weissbier, friendly staff. Just a bit hidden this place. I recommend it for a dinner if you look for something different.
T. H.
Very friendly service, good selection of beers and delicious food. Definitely get the pork knuckle, won't disappoint.
M. T.
A great place to experience German and Austrian beer and cuisine. German beer on tap includes Arcobrau, Hofbrau and Stiegl, all of which have an authentic Germanic flavour. Today I did not eat, but previously the pork knuckle was delicious and filling. The decor is German, however today the music was less ompah and more millennial wailing (the reason 4 not 5 stars). A definite place to visit for German beer.
A. W.
The food was delicious and the service was fast! The kids meals were a really generous size! Great food, great icy cold beer!
Y. L.
I couldn't have asked for a better Valentines day dinner! The staff handed out free cocktails and a rose to set the mood!
This meal was perfect in every way, the pork belly melted beautifully in my mouth and the pork knuckles fell off the bone when being sliced. The menu says this serves 2-3 people but could easily serve 4-5.
P. P.
If you're looking for a hearty German meal you found the right place. Great food, great atmosphere, good drink. What more can I say.
S. S.
As a German whenever I get homesick this is the place to go. Authentic German food with great beer! In the photos: duck & jaegerfleisch
S. T. W.
I'd always love some authentic German food as my mum is from the German language culture. The classic Kartoffelsalat tastes authentic just like German potatoes. Used to see Frikadellen on the menu however not there any more. Better call them Fleischpflanzerln in Bavarian. Although most of other traditional Bavarian dishes are on the menu, what a pity that my favourite dish is gone! Still enjoy the food overall, Bratwurst and Schweinshaxe are crispy, plus sides like Klößen/Knödel, Grünegewurzgurke or Sauerkraut, with the classic Kartoffelsalat and Zitronenlimo to cool down. However Lebkuchenherzen were expired and could only be decorations. And staff don't quite know German language so I need to check what was written on all of them.
A.
We love coming here for our German food fix. We dine here a few times a year and have never been disappointed with their food or service.
Must try the pork knuckle. I reccomend the HB Feast platter for 3. Reasonably priced and quite a generous serving.
D.
Very nice food and friendly staff. All the beers we tried were very drinkable too! Will be back.
M. S.
Went during Oktoberfest and loved the vibe. We were seated pretty quickly and picked the Oktoberfest drink to try which was really good. The cider and dunkel on tap are also awesome. Would love to keep coming back just to chill, talk, and have drinks with friends.
R. N.
Great place, authentic food and atmosphere. The staffs dressed in traditional dresses and the beer were amazing with various choices. The pork was highlight of the meal. The service was a bit slow but the place was packed so it was understandable. They had an amazing band with great songs. Really good choice for a group gathering of 4+ people.
P. G.
Amazing food, better than in most of the restaurants I’ve visited in Germany. Great service too! And lovely beer in 1l steins :)
K. W.
Food was fine, pretty big for 1 platter, atmosphere was really nice, beer was great and my bf and I loved the band and had a lot of fun with it.
b.
Great quality and portions sizes for the price; pretzels were super soft and savoury which complimented the butter well
C. P.
Haven't been here in a long time and was surprised how good it was. Meals came out quickly and meals were really nice. It a bit loud in there but if that doesn't bother you all good. Love simple German food!
A. A.
Great food at a reasonable price. This venue has a loud, friendly and playful atmosphere. The old style band plays songs with chants. Good tasting beers with a special selection. Great experience for tourists, special occasions or work breakups
K. J.
We love this place! It's on our special occasions list 😍 Thanks for the delicious pork knuckle and spaetzli (spelling?!) Love your dark ale as well. Sooo good! The wait staff are always lovely as well.
M. W.
Great food, fast and friendly service will definitely be coming again. 10 out of 10 also love the pretzels.
R. B.
So we've been to a number of german/austrian places and this one is our austrlian winner so far. We tried the sausages (platter and insividuals); 3 types of snitzel and most of their on tap biers. All were amazing. What really kicked us into 5 stars was the oompah band playing on the night a mix of traditional folk songs and some very aussie rock classics. Excellent entertainment. The only detractor byt not enough to lose a star is price. Its slightly more than the larger chain german bier houses by a dollar or two on mains and drinks but its really being picky by that point.
C. G.
Great for a quick or slow lunch. Two menus of which one is for quick and easy lunches, but which in visits have always been enjoyable.
Good selection of beer of course. Highly recommend the dark larger which despite its name and appearance is more like a golden ale. Very tasty and not to strong both in taste and alcohol.
Easy relaxed atmosphere with happy service.
J. H.
The food was amazing here, so delicious! Friendly atmosphere. The only thing I’d fault is the music doesn’t play long enough at night.
J. E.
Really good German food (ordered the HB platter), especially Sauerkraut and Porkbelly were amazing. They have life music, good German Schnaps and great service. Can highly recommend it as a German.
J. M.
Brilliant night out with good service and great food. Fun band contributed to a party atmosphere. It's often busy, so make sure you book!
B. “.
Excellent food and drink. Just be prepared for an authentic Bavarian Beer House experience. (loud as all heck)
O. M.
Great venue and delicious food and beer. We love coming back.
P. C.
Went with a group of four and all had delicious meals. I had the pork knuckle and I was some of the best pork I've ever head but it could have easily fed 2 people. I don't think I've ever been so full! Great atmosphere too
L. R.
Not as touristy as the Munich Brauhaus, but still, touristy enough. Regardless, nice food, great portions and great venue for large groups or large families.
A. Z.
A must go for the Bavarian lover. Huge portions, great choice of beers and schnapps. Can get noisy when full.
C. T.
Great place for a meal and a drink! At certain times they have a live German style band playing! It's awesome!
J. K.
Good, authentic, hearty Bavarian food, an impressive range of German beers, and friendly and helpful service. This is the perfect place for a birthday dinner.
A. H.
Been here many times, and it's been very good every time. Authentic German food. It may be a bit expensive, but for what you are getting I believe it's worth it. The portion sizes for the schnitzels are massive, and most importantly they are very delicious, especially with the sauces they offer you.
Z.
Large portions or hearty food, good bier, great atmosphere!
D. P.
Excellent service, food and beer! Come over to this place to grab a great pint of beer with pretzel, lemon schnitzel!
G. R.
The food is amazing and the beer is superior! I ate the best schnitzel I ever had in my life right here and the pork knuckle is incredible. I love this place!!
M. L.
Service is friendly and food is fantastic. Well done. We have been back many times.
W. L.
Really delicious food and decorated in that typical German style! My Cheese Sausage was delicious and came with Sauerkraut and mustard. I also ordered a bowl of veggies, which I think was on the expensive side. I ran into problems with the waitress that I ordered from even when I said Cheese Sausage and confirmed but she was apologetic and sorted it out later when my meal arrived incorrectly and stayed warm and friendly, which is great.
E. P.
The service was very friendly and attentive, and the traditional Bavarian dress is a nice touch. The happy hour is a good value. The food was traditional German. The sauerkraut was perfect. The Schweinshaxn is a must try and do share it.

Service is good but there is no German sour cabbage and chili sauce for this dish to balance the flavor, only the cabbage salad with Little bit vinegar and two slice pickle is not enough to eat with the pork
And there is no pork belly today which I really want to eat since I just got back from Frankfurt and had knockel there already so I wang to try different stuffs, but the don’t have any sign for the unviable item
Recommend to go from Monday to Friday’s happy hour (half price for the tap beer)
F. G.
Great food and beer 🍺 good service and atmosphere just love it cheers
E. M.
The food is fantastic and off course the beer is really good. Had different sausages here and they didn’t disappoint me.They offer an October Fest beer which was very good. Also, the staff is very nice and the place have a great vibe.
J. L.
I came here to eat alone on Tuesday and viola, I was treated with Schnitzel Tuesdays with 300ml of bier of my choice! I had the chicken and 300ml dark lager for just 25aud! Super affordable and super duper huge serving! The bier is really yummy too, think it's as good as the one in Germany. They have seats at the corner like helps ppl eat alone without the stress of social anxiety especially those on business trips alone but still want a good meal! Highly recommended for big groups if you want to share the pork knuckle
J. R.
What a great experience, food reminded me of Oma's cooking when I was a little boy.
Will be going back.
Try the sour apple schnapps 👌👌💯
D. N.
Friendly staff, good atmosphere, great cocktails, beer and food.
S. T.
Amazing food, amazing people. This is the second year that I came here on Oktoberfest, and I just can't wait to come back here again next year.
You have to try the pork knuckle, it's one of my best experience, but be warned, it's HUGE.
The non stop music and beautiful melodies just make your body keep moving.
And yes, the chicken dance, OMG, so much fun.
J. W.
My favourite restaurant in Melbourne for German food. This is the place to go if you miss the food you’ve had in a small restaurant just outside of Frankfurt, because here, not only do they make authentically delicious meat dishes, they also take the effort to do the simple things well. They make their spätzle exactly how I remembered it when I visited Germany - ultimate comfort food. I would come here again, and again, and again....
S. A.
Good place, cool atmosphere, good beer selection. Food selection is a little limited, but the schnitzels are great.
The staff is friendly and the place is clean. Best for a group of adults looking for a nice “pre drinks” or a place to celebrate an occasion
W. T.
Great place for genuine German food and beer. Very reasonable prices, and excellent service too.

Tasty and generous German fare

This is probably one of the oldest german joints in the city. Someone might think it is little too touristy, but its fun for most people who haven’t been to a German restaurant. It offers everything you would expect from a German pub. Bar …

This place is the best for those Looking for superb and authentic German beers. Ive tried a few and the quality is just top notch! Will definitely try their pork Knuckle one day. You won't regret coming to here.

Food was fine, pretty big for 1 platter, atmosphere was really nice, beer was great and my bf and I loved the band and had a lot of fun with it.
J. F.
Another example of One of the best German restaurants in Melbourne, with an interesting variety of delicious entrees and mains that can be shared with a small to medium sized group. Hofbrauhaus Melbourne also has a great ambience, nice seating arrangements and very helpful and polite staff. Hope to see some live music/entertainment the next time we visit and maybe even try their beers!

J. M.

Amazing food, lovely place and great beer!

Every visit to Melbourne involves dinner at my favourite restaurant...
Kransky, beer, schnapps and a chicken dance all made for a great night...
The staff are the best, All Of Them!

Great night out! The band is the best, involving the crowd and staff are super helpful. Food is ok but the beer is great :)

Food was great, and best thing is the pork knuckle and beer, there's also vegetarian options
S. F.
Tasty food. Highly recommend going here with a group of friends and ordering the shared platter. Great music and great entertainment. Highly recommend
K. D.
Celebrated my granddaughters belated 6th birthday at Hofbrauhaus last night before going to Frozen the musical.
Service amazing, food brilliant. It was our first post lockdown outing and couldn't ask for more.
M.
Very friendly staff here with wonderful German food, drinks and music in the middle of China Town
C. T.
Nice selection on the menu and great food. Lovely service
m. s.
Always fun, always good food, always great beer and service.
J.
Very atmospheric and cosy. My sister loved her vegetarian option and the schnitzel (both veal and lemon chicken) was outstanding. The mashed potato was comfort food at its best. Outstanding.
S. C.
Holds a Bock beer weekend advertising all the sub types of beer but doesn't even supply them. Poor range, but good staff.
Disappointed with the effort after the Facebook event indicated more.
N. A.
Visited this place today with my workmates..We love the sausages and beers.. The place has a rustic vibe which is so cool..
Staff are very attentive and we had good customer service experience.
A. L.
Friendly staff, huge selection of beers and big generous serves of food. Not much more to ask for a great night out!
Due to covid, they are now pretty quiet, but do pop in to support the area
C. W.
Great service and food. I always enjoy The Hofbrauhaus! Best German food in Melbourne!
N. B.
Delicious food, friendly staff and great atmosphere. Everything tasted so authentic with the exception of the Obatzta.

Fav place to go!
L. B.
Great food great entertainment and prices of foods and drinks
B. K.
Fun atmosphere and delicious German cuisine. Nice place for drinks after work and dinner
W. S.
Been there for a company Xmas party. Food is quite good and portions are massive. Great beer on tap too (love a German wheat). The place is very relaxed and you can have a god time there; convenient location, too. The only thing that stood out to me were the prices - I would say this place is way overpriced.
D. H.
Scrumptious food! 😋The staff are warm and attentive, music was cheerful which makes for a great atmosphere. Highly recommended if you've not already had the pleasure! 👍
S. A.
Love the food there. Sausages were fantastic as expected from a German restaurant. We had the fried pork knuckle and cheese sausage, both did not disappoint.
Service was attentive and on-point. The ambience is lively with live band which was very engaging with the guest there.
Great for big groups as the portion is huge and it's great for sharing.
G. W.
Nice vibrant environment. Nice beers and great experience for the live music. Food is well over priced however.
I would expect fine dining for the dish I bought which was the oven roasted pork belly. Was nice but not worth the cost.
M. G.
Delicious food and friendly service. A fun environment. Lots of beers and schnapps available.
R. H.
Great value, lovely service, wonderful food, would absolutely come again. Highly recommended
G. J.
Offering live german music Thursday to Saturday. Seving a wide range of german beers including stein sized glasses.
Great food selection.
Ate the german bratwurst. Lovely

Definitely the place to go for great beer and a great atmosphere during Oktoberfest! 🍻🍺

Love the food, service and of course the beer!!! Prost!
D. S.
Love the Hofbräuhaus. Been many times. Food is delicious. Staff are generally great to deal with. For some reason our drinks took forever last night!!!! But I'm sure that was a one off. Work on that and we have a 5 star review coming.
M.
Very nice experience and the lemon schnitzel was the best schnitzel i've ever had!
M. B.
Not only is the restaurant a wonderful traditional experience, the cook at home set menu is so easy & the perfect way to bring Bavaria into your home. We enjoyed the kransky, schupfnudel, käsespätzle, mash, sauerkraut & weißbier for Fathers Day in iso. Philipp the Brand Manager was also so unbelievably accommodating & kind. Highly recommend!
L. G.
Meals were very nice. Hospitality was ok.
J. G.
Great place to get hearty German meals for a good dinner feed.
Good beer choices and sizes, and meals are authentic German. The food comes out relatively quick, so perfect if you're starving.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Have come here many times, and will come here again.
T.
I am a very disliker of pork. But the pig's feet in this restaurant are very delicious. Unforgettable taste
M. C.
Came here for a friend's birthday party on Sat night. Eugene couldn't have been more accommodating to our frequent and last minute number changes and managed to squeeze us all in! The atmosphere was great, lots of live music (if a little loud), dancing and general energetic fun. The food was delicious, solid fare - although if you wanted vegetables to go with your meat, you generally had to order extra dishes - some were literally just sausages! Our sausage platter was excellent, included two pretzels, cabbage salad, sauerkraut, mashed potato, mustard, bbq sauce and 5 kinds of sausage - plenty for 2 hungry people but not totally overwhelming either. Appreciated the generosity shown to our birthday star. Will be back again for sure!
M. G.
Food was FANTASTIC beer is LIT and the music takes you to heaven.... The staff was very nice and the manager is so friendly even gave us free shots.. for the first time in years we found our best restaurant in melbourne .. this is totally a FIVE STARS Restaurant .. we will come again ... regards Mako&Viki
V. D.
The place is a Melbourne institution. They do live up to their title as the original and best. Lots of hearty dishes and a great selection of beers too.
B. G.
The meat platter was sooo good. Highly recommend getting it if you can’t decide whether to have pork knuckle (all crackling), bratwurst or schnitzel. The pretzels were very fresh and served with whipped butter. And all went down nicely with a pint of cider or beer.
L.
My all-time favourite place to have German 🇩🇪 food, we always go there for our office lunch, and I never disappoint once,
I always start with 1-litre beer.
Plenty of seats to have office lunch and they are happy to split bills
Take all credit cards and no minimum charges.
Great food and excellent service guys, keep up your work
E. M.
Great food and bier .. slightly over priced but worth it if you’re craving a great Bavarian sausage.
P. C.
Excellent food could not have a taste at there other menus will sure come back for more
A.
Awesome food and great ambience!!!! Beer was absolutely delicious.
W. H.
Awesome Venu and my favourite German food in the city. I would highly recommend going when the band is playing (last time I was there we got free schnapps for singing the loudest)
K. W.
The atmosphere was great and buzzing as you could sit back and sink a beer from a wide range while watching staff zoom past busily catering to everyone. They would join in on birthday songs and dances and just really seemed to care about their job and the atmosphere.
The food quality and portion size was perfect and I walked out feeling barrelled.
j. C.
Great place, great atmosphere, really good food
K. T.
Unreal. Stayed a few nights for work. Tried a different meal each night. Was some of the best food I've eaten. Staff was exceptional and the manager was an absolute legend!
J. M.
Highly recommend the beer and pretzels with the traditional cheese! Pretzel was soft and made fresh. It has a real German atmosphere. They play english songs with German covers. The service is excellent! We asked for take away because the food was just that good, going to come back tonight to try the onion rings. Tomorrow morning I'll be eating a pretzel again and going to try the Bavarian hot chocolate.
S. S.
Food is tasteless. Beers are nice. Service is reasonable. I wouldn't go again.
C. M.
Delicious food and great service every time
S. W. (.
Great atmosphere, wonderful hearty food, friendly staff, and superb beer. Whether its lunch or dinner - you'll be hard pressed not to come away smiling.
d. m.
Took the whole family Great atmosphere telly fun time food was very good Took on “The challenge” couldn’t get it done However our host Marko made the whole experience fun Two thumbs up. Do yourself a favour and go there. I have been few times and this place never disappoints. Good German food, awesome selection of beers and schnaps. This is a must do during Oktoberfest!
章.
Friendly service and very good, traditional dinning environment.
J. D.
This place is amazing. The food was brilliant and filling. We tried the schnitzels, kranzky, sauerkraut, and pork belly and it was all cooked very well, tasted delicious, and the proportions were huge.
Really good beer menu certainly topped off a great meal.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Can’t recommend this place highly enough. Looking forward to our next meal here.
D. P.
Fun place to enjoy a work dinner. It doesn't pretend to be fine dining. You will however have great Schnitzel and delicious sausages. The German band oddly played American songs. All ways a fun night .
P. J.
The food is really good and abundant.
And it’s more than eating well. It’s an experience in immersing into another culture. The closer taste you’ll have in Melbourne to be inside a tent at the Oktoberfest in Munich.
M. T.
hi Giri, thank you for looking after us today when we had our family celebration at the Hofbräuhaus in Melbourne. You've been an awesome host and made this day even more special.
H. M. C.
Best knuckle. Knuckle SAS sufficient for two persons, with leftovers. Great service great value
I. S.
Amazing food and even better service! Definitely one of the must haves if you’re in Melbourne.
A great environment to be in and to share wonderful filling meals with friends or family!
Cannot recommend enough!
K. S.
Best pretzels I've had so far.
Amazing.
Huge meals, if you are not to hungry I would recommend to share a meal, as they are large meals.
In saying that I ate my entire meal, as it was delicious.
Staff were able to accommodate us even having 500 bookings for that night.
Will be driving 5 hours to come back!
E. M.
Always love this place! Such a lively atmosphere and epic food!
A. B.
The food is good, but not 5star good. Portions are by and large generous. Prices within reason of what to be expected
Overall a nice experience ,but no memorable
N. M.
Live music, friendly staff and good food. Good veriety of craft beers too.
Z. S.
Very traditional food, welcoming service and nice beer.
M. H.
Large enough to feed 3 men +. Amazing taste and atmosphere.
h. a.
This is a great place for groups. There were 8.of us for lunch from work on a Friday and we were served swiftly and pleasantly. We all enjoyed our lunchtime special meals which were the perfect size for lunch. There is a great variety of beer which we had fun choosing with help from the friendly waiter.
G. J.
Great place to celebrate any event. We have our work Christmas party here at least every second year.
Food and beer is sensational.
Friendly staff.
Good entertainment that gets everyone out of their seat, dancing and having fun.
Not so cheap but worth it!!
B. S.
Great range of traditional food with generous portions.
B. (.
Fantastic. Great service and tasty food. Plus who can argue with one litre beers!
N. S.
Pork knuckle was awesome. Beer was great as well. Ambient noise could be very loud, considering the placement of tables and chairs.
a.
The service was lovely. The live music was amazing and the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend the pork knuckle :)
G. P.
Been here heaps of times but never ordered the chicken schnitzel. Hands down my bad, because that was the best one I've ever had. I'd recommend getting one of their lunch specials or going during happy hour for a good deal.
L. K.
Hofbrauhaus is fantastic. From the refreshing beer, to the hearty, meaty food to the corny German theme, Hofbräuhaus offers an experience that will not disappoint.
Do the chicken dance for free shots on a Friday night, and come in before 6 to the sister bar next door for fantastic beers at a bargain price.
I recommend going with a friend or two and ordering a share platter (and a couple beers of course), so you get a taste of everything.
J.
Great for a Bavarian experience where you would take your German friends for a piece of home while they are visiting you. Great lunch menu if your only a bit peckish or try the massive shnitzel if you have a monster appetite. Great beer selection on tap and live music on the weekend.
T. B.
Food was so good. Highly recommend.
g. s.
Delicious food and nice atmosphere
R. T.
Enjoyed our visit with a lively boisterous atmosphere, hearty food and live music. The reason I couldn't give 5 stars is due to the fact there was no Hofbrau original available, also the wait-staff kept making mistakes with what table to deliver food, we receiving someone else's before we pointed out their mistake then our food was delivered to someone else's table. And the Bratkartoffeln was quite burnt. But our other meals and sides were delicious.
A. O.
Enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was good, highly recommend the pretzel because it’s incredibly delicious. I had a schnitzel and that was quite nice as well.
Service people were nice, however, they weren’t really listening to us and the service wasn’t the best.
We had to ask for things multiple times because of a few mistakes and they were so quick to rush off that it didn’t give us a chance to let them know.
All in all is was a good experience, but not the best.
C. L.
Outstanding place. Food is delicious, big portions at a responsible price, the drinks were very good, the band created a fun atmosphere but most important was the staff. They were lovely and made dinning there a pleasurable experience. Definitely a credit to the business.
J. H.
I really like this place. Atmosphere is quite lovely. The band is also amazing, i love them, old gentleman. Waitress is sooo cute and pretty. Food is delicious and big portion.
D. H.
Went for Christmas day and sat outside, nice pop up extra space with really friendly and authentic German staff, stayed hours and had free shots with the waitress!
Pork belly is the bomb, don't bother with anything else!
H. R.
Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the giant pork knuckle I had for my dinner. They had live music on Thursday which made the meal with friends all the better. Prices were fair for the meals and taste was great. I would return again.
K. J.
My wife is German so we go regularly to Hofbräuhaus. I guess that's enough to say that the restaurant and the food is really authentic German and very delicious. Also the setting and the service is really good. If you want good food and an authentic German experience, this is the place to go. Sometimes the the orders have been a bit "hit and miss", getting wrong side dishes or something missing etc. but they have been very friendly about fixing those and setting things right. Highly recommended.
E. K.
Have been here a few times now. Generally on a Saturday night. Great place. Great atmosphere. Pork knuckle on point EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!! Crispy skin. Soft juicy meat. Great beer. Love this place. Will definitely be back again and again.
M. Y.
Ordered the HB feast platter and boy, it was a feast! We were so full from just the feast platter alone. The menu said it could feed 2-3 people but 5 people eating it we could barely make it! Definitely so worth if you're sharing with a group of people. Would recommend!
J. T.
Cosy traditional German atmosphere and decor. Food was very lovely, reasonably priced based on the proportions. But the standout was the staff ! Very lovely and helpful ! Definitely give this a go if you looking for a good feed and a bier.
T. S.
Food, service, beer, atmosphere all 10/10
A. M.
My favourite place. I always have the sausages with sauerkraut and flavoured wheat beer. Always absolutely mouth-watering and delicious. Great tavern atmosphere and friendly staff. A true German experience! I leave happy and satisfied every time. Can't recommend enough!!
J. B.
Had dinner here mid week. Walked in off the street and was seated promptly, order taken and drinks brought out. We chose the mixed platter for 2-3 people and the waitress advised us that it was big. 15 mins later out it came and yes it was big. A huge pork knuckle, two schnitzels, 4 sausages, smoked ham, mashed potatoe, cabbage, and plenty more. We were both hungry but could not finish this feast. $105 for the platter. The orange juices were a bit on the steep side for the size of the glass but otherwise all very good.
D. A.
I ordered online cause 2020 etc.
everything came hot, warm and wrapped with care.
Cold things were out in different bags.
The pork knuckle was huge and the perfect midweek treat. I immediately browsed the rest of their online range and I’ll be going to them again!
As soon as we open again I’m coming with my friends for a night out. They’re the first place in a month to send me food that is clearly fresh and hot. I say definitely order from them again.
They know how to do things right at Hofbrauhaus #fourworldcupsandoneworldpope
M.
They have $13.50 lunch deals and I had mango wheat beer. Was so good!
K. D. P.
Awesome atmosphere, great beer. A good place to go for a chill time with some mates. Definetly try the chips, I can't remember what they're called on the menu, but they pair very well with a cold beer on a chilly night.
I.
I've always enjoyed coming here, to the point that whenever I visit Melbourne I absolutely must round up the mates and swing by. Can be pretty lively / noisy if you're close to the band downstairs, but there are a couple of options that are slightly quieter. I prefer sitting upstairs more.
Platters are of an excellent size, great imported bier options and glad to see they haven't gone the way of other German-themed restaurants and start putting on locally 'craft' brewed German-style beer. Keep it imported and original!!
C. M.
Great food. Service could be improved. Place goes off in the evening. Live music as well. Great location.
A. L.
One of my favourite pubs in Melbourne, and definitely the most favourite German one. The cuisine is absolutely great, and so is the choice of authentic German beers. If you really like a big piece of pork knuckle or traditional Bavarian sausages accompanied by 1-litre mug of excellent beer, this is a must-visit for you
R. M.
Amazing quality food with great beer. The platter was outstanding. All the meats were succulent and cooked to perfection. The menu says 2-3 people which is accurate (2 big eater could do it)
Y. W.
Great and lively German place! We went on Friday night and there was a live music and the singer asked some customers to join him to the front and we did some funny dancing. The foods were good and plenty (we ordered the set menu). We had a great night!
T. T.
Great beer and the pork knuckle was a knockout!
D. D.
Being our first time visiting Hofbräuhaus, we didn’t know it was divided into two separate areas (bar area and restaurant). Bar tender didn’t seem to care to explain this when we asked about food. He just said it started serving at 5pm. We drank our beers then asked at 5pm about how to order food. He flat said that we can go next door. As we’re heading next door he’s laughing with a coworker about “not giving a sh** about customer service.”
Regardless of Bartender von Grumpy, the staff in the actual restaurant were nice enough and the food was seriously worth the awkward dealings with Herr Edgelord. The platter was down right delicious and out of this world.
J. d. H.
Food was fantastic!! And excellent genuine beer. It all brought back memories of Germany. Highly recommend.
D. P.
Such a lovely spot. I came here late on a Friday night with some friends and we found ourselves in the full swing of Oktoberfest festivities. A very tight, entertaining live band (with an accordian) and some fun games and dancing on the dance floor made the whole night a great experience. Great beer and the meat and sausages were second to none. I highly recommend for a group of friends celebrating an occasion or a reunion of the boys.
P. S.
Great food, exceptional service, really enjoyed it, the veal schnitzel was perfect and the cured meats on the entree brilliant.
Thanks for a really enjoyable night!
F. G.
Love coming here, so much fun and the food is amazing. Great place to come with a large group.
L. S.
Good place for checking out
Two pp with this magnificent pork & 2 cups of black beer
$72 Australia dollar
E. W.
Most authentic German food and experience in Melbourne. Not as huge and commercial as other German restaurants so it really has a nice cosy vibe. There's a live band playing and the food is truly amazing! As good as I've had in Germany.
P. P.
Good food and best beer!
D. B.
The beer was just average. I have drunk a lot of German beer in my life in Germany and here, and this was quite watery and tasteless - maybe just not kept well. The chicken schnitzel was fantastic. Really tasty and full of flavour. The bratwurst was a little underdone for our liking but overall we had a good night here. The schnapps at the end was a bit unnecessary but good fun.
I. O.
Both the beir and food is delicious. Service is good and gosh dang that saurkraut.
A. O.
It's pretty good. I have had some good experiences here ordering the large sharing platter abs feeling like a stuffed pig myself. However, last time we went as a large group with preordered feasting platters. It felt like we got half what we had going in at random. So I'm not inclinded to go back. Good atmosphere of you want to drink large beers and eat on long tables.
T. G.
We spent an afternoon here with family celebrating 50 years in Australia after emigrating from Germany.
The food is rich and delicious. Beers on tap is a bonus.....with a great selection.
The only letdown is the stairs (not great for the elderly and/or those with kids) but that can’t be helped in such an old building.
Worth going to at least once.
O. Y.
everything we ate and drank was just great!
b. w.
"In Melbourne steht ein Hofbrau haus.". Atmosphere that cuts like the old country and food to match. The Schweinehachse was as good as in Munchen. Great place for deutscher qualitative. I'll be back
R. B.
Food was great but we went for a birthday dinner in the restaurant section. Having been there before on a weekend evening, we thought it would be appropriate for dinner and catching up with friends. The band would have been fine as atmospheric background music (as it was on our first visit) but it was ridiculously loud. Impossible to have any kind of conversation and an uphill battle to communicate with the wait staff against a wall of polka covers at the volume of a death metal band. Again, this was down in the restaurant, not in the party section. Really disappointed. If we'd known it was going to be like this, we'd have made other plans.
J. M.
Great atmosphere, good service and a safe place to eat at during the lockdown restrictions as they followed every protocol. The music was great, and the food was amazing. Good choice of bier and schnapps too.
N. C.
We were looking for a quick bite without a booking before a show! So so awesome, sat, fed and watered us and sent us on our way with plenty of time. Great atmosphere, we felt like we were back in Bavaria if only for a meal!! Great!
L. C.
Had this delivered for a Friday night treat and did not disappoint. Pork knuckle, spatzl, mash, cheese kranskies, sauerkraut - all washed down with house lager. If I didn't need to fit through my front door again, I would eat this for every meal for the rest of life.
A. M.
We had a great night here having dinner whilst celebrating a bucks night. Lots of food, beer, cider music and dancing. Very friendly staff and vibrant place. Very accommodating for wheelchair access, on site portable ramps are required to climbed the front door steps.
N. H.
Very meaty dishes with good price, 13.5 for lunch in weekdays
v. h.
had an absolute awesome weekend here with the best service ever from Kate. The place was packed and hectic during weekend but their sausage platter and feast platter beat all. Highly recommend everyone to try chef dessert and Aplestrudel, legend! Our gang definitely come back for another crazily fun time, good food and for the best attentive and professional manner of bubbly Kate. Legend!
S. M.
Had dinner for a Bucks party here and had a fantastic time! Beers and tunes for everyone and good food! Perfect venue to a Bucks. Very easy and accommodating booking service as well. Would highly recommend for a Bucks night! Thanks again for an awesome experience :D
C. F. L.
Perfect place for after work hanging out with friends or colleagues. We ordered the platter, which was super good for sharing. Delicious food and you can order big 1 litre beer for very affordable price.
J. F.
Was an incredibly filling platter of several meats for 2 that left us feeling like we had lead in our stomachs. But not exactly good value for money at $105!
Good as a special occasion, but too dear to eat at regularly.

Absolutely great place, the atmosphere is amazing and the staff are super friendly. Great place for celebrations and for groups, I highly recommend checking this place out. It serves classic German food and you almost feel like you are at Oktoberfest. Francie was amazing, a great asset to the place!
J. A.
Atmosphere very good. Live band and in between music, crowded but comfortable. Food was great, 9 adults and ordered 4 dishes to share and still could not finish all.
Parking only problem, but park outside CBD and use free tram around city.
D. G.
Good idea, but food pretty ordinary for the price they ask. Atmosphere is nice, if you are in the right company of friends. Otherwise music is too loud. Would not recommend if you think of a quite night out.
J. C.
Unlike other German inspired bars now in Melbourne, this establishment lets you have fun and not just a drink. Have a beer, order the large pork knuckle platter, and sing along with the best polka band in the house. Apparently every song just needs a polka beat to make it a fun song. This is a place you can let your hair down and just have fun.

This was my first time at this restaurant & to say I had a great experience is a complete understatement!
The tap beers were excellent (I went for the pilsner) and the accompanied meal matched it very well; we had a group of 7 and had 2 feast platters + a sausage platter which was more than enough food!
The meal highlights were: the cooked red cabbage, fresh baked pretzels, pork knuckle (best I've eaten anywhere), chicken schnitzel, and of course the fantastic beer selection on tap. The staff service was also very pleasing and I'm happy to report this to be my favourite Bavarian experience ever! 2 big thumbs up.. Would definitely go back, and for an epic meal like this to come to $50 per head (including drinks) you really can't go wrong. I give it a 9/10
S. T.
The Hofbrauhaus is probably the best German restaurant in Melbourne (we don't have a lot of selections!)
The food is great and the beer is good.
The atmosphere is fantastic and you will definitely have a great time.
Some nights there will be band playing and that makes it really fun however the music is extremely loud so make sure you site somewhere further from the stage if you want to talk.
j. w.
This place is incredible. It's like a bar/restaurant has been taken from Germany and placed right in the heart of Brisbane. The food was great and the beers were even better. If you're having a birthday I'd recommend coming here as they treat birthdays very differently
N. D.
Great atmosphere if you don't mind the live music. Otherwise, there's a quieter space as well which is incredibly considerate. Food is great quality as well. Had a great time!
S. W.
Awesome place, great food, great music.
M. L.
Great meal and great service. Cheers
m. d.
Nice restaurant with authentic German food. Good quality food and beer and fast service. Really recommend this place and definitely come back again.
A. W.
Had a great night, food was excellent, beer went down a treat, highly recommend a visit!
On the food: I ordered the platter, shared with my pregnant sister, we couldn't finish.. we tried, it's a lot of food. Excellent pork, several sausages, a couple of schnitzels, piles of sourcraut, some other veges, Oddly, I had room for shots of schnapps and a few more steins of lovely ale.
On the booze: yes! Worth a visit just for that. Wise selection of beer and schnapps, possibly other things.
On the atmosphere: I'm a solid introvert, so it wasn't for me, others seemed to love it though. The live band, the wench uniforms, the shots fanfare, the birthday schnapps, all of the pagentry. Not a quiet venue by any means!
Decoration is cool, nice solid old-looking tables, the fake windows (they should really chuck pictures behind them!).
Even the bill wasn't terrible, depending on your level of gorging it could easily get very high. Affordable excess is not possible is it!
On location: the only downside, it's in the city, so you have to get in there, what a shame.
Staff were amazingly friendly (possibly part of the show), all in all, a great night.
C. R.
Sorry a must do when in Munich though a bit cliche. The food is average, the beer was okay, the music was fun, the toilets busy.
What makes the place fun is the energy, volume of people, the old German food hall ambience.
Give yourself time, grab some souvenirs and bring with you a fun disposition.
G. S.
We've been many times to the Hofbrauhaus and its always been a great experience. The food is by far the best German food in town and the service, music and ambience is second to none. Big shout out to the manager Deepak for being so awesome and making us, our friends and their kids feel so at home each time we visit. We love coming here!
S. C.
Great food and drink options well suited to the overall theme.
D. R.
A nice big feed and fantastic imported German beer in a cosy location in the CBD
L. D.
This has been the best experience I have ever had at a restaurant.
A friend recommended this restaurant and I decided to give it a try.
The sausages, pan fried potato, and chocolate cake dessert were amazing. I can't recommend this place enough.
M. K.
Food was spectacular and reasonably priced. Has such an authentic atmosphere with fantastic live music and wait staff were absolutely delightful! Super friendly and worthwhile visit- spent about 2.5 hours there! Definitely will visit again!
B. M.
An excellent meal, beers and experience only tainted by the conditions of the men's toilet after some clown had vomited everywhere and did not have to decentcy to clean it up or inform management.
Our waitresses on the night were fantastic and very helpful. Will be returning.
J. W.
It was awesome, they gave us free drinks!
P. E.
Omg!! Sensational food and a great time. I can't speak highly of our waitress Natalie. She made the night a wonderful experience. Will go back and see the team and the wonderful Nat again.
K. S.
Amazing sausages.. The jaegerfleisch's sauce was also great, and hands down for the best applestrudel 😋
The waitress was also nice and friendly. Overall it was definitely a 10/10 experience and definitely coming back for more.
G. J.
This is the best German beer hall in Melbourne!
Located down a little lane in the heart of Melbourne’s China town - this place is an absolute gem.
Downstairs there is a bar, some seating area and standing area. There is a restaurant area that is quite large and very nicely layered out.Upstairs is where it all happens though. Again, there is a bar and also the classic German beer hall layout.
The service here is always brilliant and the beers are great! Food is your usual German classic and they also have a chicken snitzchel, chips and beer challenge. I tried it but failed as the snitzchel was just to big.
If you are after an authentic German beer hall- this is the best in Melbourne. My review doesn’t really do it justice. Don’t be put off by the location. Although down a lane in China town this place is worth going!!!
M. P.
Very good food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, good prices
A.
Fantastic cider and beer before the footie game. Great spot.
K. I.
It's a German restaurant in the middle of Chinatown! This quite literally shows the multiculturalism of Melbourne and our obsession with food. The beer is fantastic and so are the Breadzils -(massive bread pretzels). Will definitely be coming back!
N. R.
3.5 to 4 stars
I've been here a number of times and it's pretty good but not consistent in terms of service. When we've gone around lunchtime, the service has always been great. During dinner when it's busier, there have been a couple of times when the servers were a bit forgetful and didn't follow through on a request or gave me the wrong drink.
In regards to food, the bretzels are delicious and I always look forward to them. Sausages are great, my favourite is the chilli cheese kransky. Pork knuckle was ok for me but my friends loved it.
Overall, the food is good but the service is inconsistent.
C. F.
Great food. Great beer. Definitely a very Paleo kind of cusine. Was quite loud though as a band was playing. Though not all the time. Also the meat was all very salty so do remember to drink a lot if that is your thing.
J. w.
Been here on Boxing day , it proves I made a good time we don't need to wait too long ,but still take 25mins to have the meal , everything is good except food ....unfortunately , meat was salty with bit overpriced beer , I do like the sausage though, but if you are meat people with heavy taste then this place is for you ,otherwise I don't recommend .....
A. D.
I always try to take visitors to Melbourne here. I know it has nothing to do with Australia but it is always an awesome place to start a big night. The food is great and the atmosphere is usually infectious too. You cant beat a 1 litre stein + pretzel!
M. G.
Nice schnitzels. My wife had the Wiener schnitzel (she’s German and quite fussy about her schnitzel) and she loved it. I had the Swiss schnitzel which was very nice. They accommodated our need for speed to get to a show and ensured we got out in time.
R. C.
Fantastic place with a wonderful lively atmosphere and very friendly German dressed staff. Delicious food and drinks and plenty of it. Loved the service, the setting and my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Will definitely becoming back for the traditional German evening meals on a Friday or Saturday night when they're on. Thankyou Hofbrauhaus for a fantastic evening.
K. N.
One of, if not the, best German experiences in Melbourne. Always a popular decision for dinner or celebration.
B. M.
Great service food and drinks, Angela did a magnificent job of looking after us, she made it a truly great experience 😍💀
D. D.
I love this place, every time I get surprised by the lunch specials :)
- Wow, this is the best .... I've ever eat!
Next time:
- No-no, this ..... is the best! :)
One day will come down to Melbourne to have a proper dinner with huge meet plate & lot of beer :)
g. a.
Nice band playing in the background, generous food portion, good beer. Ordered the cold platter and pork knuckles and shared among 2 people. Food was delicious, the pork skin was crispy and meat was moist and flavorsome. Will be back.
J. M.
Came here for dinner with my girlfriend, who is a lover of German food and culture. We both found the atmosphere and food to be top-notch. Had the weisswurst and the kassler, both of which were great! The service by our waitress was attentive and friendly. We'll be back here again for sure.
T. K.
Enjoyed the food and the music was amazing
m.
We had the three course platter. Definitely enough for 4 people. Desserts were a little sweet but otherwise very tasty
R. V. D. B.
Great food. Great atmosphere. Hof beer was the best. For a person from Sydney, prices were very reasonable. Had the big meat platter shared between 4, added the Goulash and pretzels.
A. T.
Last week, I took my team here for a weekday lunch. The place has a well suited period decor. As soon as we entered, we were shown to our reserved table. We opted for the lunch menu that includes a Bier reasonably priced under $15. I ordered Chicken Schnitzel & Acrobrau Weissbier which has a fantastic 5.3% alc (it does make a difference!) and was very happy with all that was served. Schnitzel is the best I have had in a long time. Will sure visit again to try out the other options on the menu. Thanks guys!
S. C.
Pork hock and sausages were great but the fish of the day was very SALTY for my taste. The bretsel with the siup was really good. The place is bursting with sounds of laughter as you enter. The waiter jullian was very patient-thank you.
s. t.
Got here after 9.40pm as were welcomed. Romana served us. She was fantastic. Made us feel like we were in Germany. The pretzel were so fresh. We were recommended the feast platter! What a feast!
G. M.
This place gets busy, its packed on a Friday. Great atmosphere, theres a live band that plays some traditional german folk songs. Barmaiden's gives it a really authentic feel. The food is a meat lovers dream. We had a platter packed with eisbein (with crackling), pork belly, some sausages and chicken schnitzel. Bar with a decent selection of beers and schnapps to choose from.
G. C.
Loved it! Food is good, staff is friendly and helpful! The atmosphere is great! Live band is just a good place for family and friends! To have a fun night!
P. I.
Great food
Great entertainment
Highly recommend it
A. P.
Food in hall was hit and miss. The wurst were the most disappointing everthing else was good. Live music entertainment was ok.
Bar next door was also good to drink in afterwards. Disappointed the flavoured weisbier is just syrup added and is not good.
A. C.
The Hof is a tradition style German restaurant with an interesting character, superb food and great beer. It is a meet lovers paradise with my favourite being their giant schnitzel, poke belly and burgers. The atmosphere is always jovial, the waitresses even wear tradition attire.
T. d.
We couldnt find this place but eventually we did at 3.15 pm and missed the deadline for 3pm lunch menu.Ben kindly agreed to offer us the lunch menu anyway.Lunch of mixed sausages and trimmings was a delight to the taste buds and very good value! We will definitely return. Thankyou!
S. S.
It's ok. Just ok. Schmitz is very mediocre, knuckle miss a bit of flavour (more beer and herbs), sausage was good. In Europe this place would bankrupt or just serve tourists that donno what they should expect. German folk band set the mood and waiting stuff was nice and helpful.
P. S.
If you want hearty German food with good beer then you cannot go past the Hofbrauhaus. Nicely tucked away in a Melbourne laneway away from commercial main street eateries. The pork knuckle has been fantastic the past three times we’ve been there over a 2 year period. Very consistent. The Schnitz and sausage with sides (sauerkraut & potatoes) also fantastic. If you’re a carnivore you’ll love this place.
Try to go with a big appetite otherwise you will unfortunately not try as many things as you’d like.
S. G.
Situated in Chinatown and a great place to try German food like Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, Weisswurst, Bretzel....
A good choice of cocktails and of course different kind of beer... I highly recommend the Weissbier with mango... sooo good.
Staff is very friendly, so what are you waiting for?😀
B. K.
Came here for dinner and ordered the patter and loved it. These guys do traditional Bavarian dishes and the restaurant decor and atmosphere will make your think you've been transported to lower Germany. Will come back next time we visit Melbourne. Yum!
M. B.
Great authentic Bavarian cuisine and service. Fantastic pork schnitzel and various beers! The wheat beer was delicious! Can recommend.
M. A.
Favourite bar in Melbourne! Great chill place! Great selection of drinks ranging from shots, wines, and beers. Most amazing pretzels ever, period! Had 3 in a row the other night! The service is fast and all the workers are super friendly and the workers have amazing german outfits on! Highly recommend for drinks and snacks! Plus no minimum eftpos amount :P
G. S.
Great family venue for Poppys 70th birthday
Food great and generous proportions Able to bring our own birthday cake.Helpful staff
成.
Very nice atmosphere. Pork belly a little salty tho
S. M.
Great food and great atmosphere! My partner and I love German food and this place definitely didn't disappoint. Parking can be a hassle but that's the city for you. Over all a great German restaurant and will definitely be coming back!
c. l.
Always a good place for nice beer and German food. Try their fruit flavoured beer and you will love it! Everything is yummy and affordable.
A. O.
Best Bavarian beer house in Melbourne....Their menu is awesome...you gonna love the ambiance... the ppl..and of course the Beer...Traditional German restaurant in the heart of Melbourne...a hidden Gem...Happy hours is the one to watch-out for..you gonna rock...there sausage is also highly recommended..
E. C.
Great atmosphere! Fantastic lunch specials that are really filling and will put you in a food coma! This spot was fun to check out, highly recommend!
E. B.
We went in as a family of 3 on a Saturday night at about 7pm, without a booking, and were seated straight away even though it was bursting at the seams. Our 9yo daughter was given a child's menu and chose schnitzel, which was served really quickly. My husband and I chose a share platter of würste with a couple of sides (spätzle and gemüse). We didn't wait long even though they were very busy. It was HUGE. Really huge. The platter could have served all of us. There were lots of children in the Hof; it's really family-friendly, but very noisy. Not recommended for those with sensory concerns. It's pricier than pub food but the serves are bigger. We'll be back.
A. H.
Great place for large group of people! Friendly service. Will come back and try their food next around!
C. T.
Most authentic Bavarian food I've had in Australia. Very reasonably priced, amazing quality and portion sizes. Kid friendly, do yourself a favor 👍👍👍
K. S.
Tasty and generous German fare
R. H.
The wait staff here are mind readers. Excellent service, solid food, very cosy atmosphere.
J. G.
Great hearty traditional German meals, wonderful atmosphere. Just a bit crowded and crazy on the weekends.
I loved the ompa band doing covers of the Game Of Thrones theme and Star Wars cantina music.
G. H.
Great vibe and enjoyed the sing a long karaoke
J. R.
I need to go on the record here and say this is the best Pork Knuckle i have ever had. Truly Mountainous and served with every side under the sun. Designed to be shared(and please do, you wont finish it.) it was truly mouth watering. Good German beers, but limited to the hofbrau range mostly, hence the name. Pricey, but reasonable when you split the meal.
A. H.
The food is tasty, and folks are friendly, but the music is loud... Really loud... Extremely loud... Brains rattling bordering on pain loud. If members of your group can't handle an accordion turned up to 11, this is not the place for you.
A. K.
Food and staff were lovely, however not a place to go to actually catch up with friends, way too loud for a conversation. Ok for a fun night out, just not the right atmosphere for a catch up.
P. R.
The food was fabulous, the service was wonderful & the atmosphere was full of people, laughter, GREAT BEER & music. Felt like I was in the Prancing Pony Inn, in the Lord of the rings series! My family & I loved it!
L. L.
The interior has changed and there is now booth seating, the interior looks very nice and bright, well renovated, modern and clean. The menu has also changed. What we ordered: Gyoza, Vegetable spring rolls, Spinach Ohitashi balls, Kinpira, Tonkotsu Cha-Shu ramen, Veggie teriyaki with brown rice, "Combo D" Chicken teriyaki with Miso soup.
K. K.
The platter was awesome! The platter could fill three guys’ guts without space. The range of beer is more than 10. Fruit flavoured beer was my favourite.
B. B.
Very authentic German cuisine! If you find yourself in the CBD and are itching for a Bavarian experience, I highly recommend this place. Between the three in the party, we tried the Weisswurst, the Bratwurst, and the Chili Käsekainer, all of which were amazing. You can even order proper German beer by the litre. Highly recommended, and I will be returning!
D. O.
Great place for a beer and a filling meal. A sausage platter, and a couple of sides hit the spot for two if us. Love this place for the wheat 🍺 too.
J. D.
Great food and service. But their POS is so old they won't split bills and ask you to pay for drinks individually at bar. But their min on card is $25. Might be time to upgrade your systems and processes.
V. G.
Really nice beers. Out of all Germans bars this one is the best.
D. M.
Was very excited to finally find an authentic Bavarian restaurant! Food is great, with an extensive menu and atmosphere is casual in proper German Bierhaus style, whilst the staff are exceptionally friendly! Very highly recommended!
J. B.
Nice German themed restaurant and bar.
However completely rude front of house on the weekend when we asked if there was a table free. No need to shove your clipboard in our face in annoyance to show us you are booked out, we'll take your word for it. We had some out of towners with us this time so it was very insulting and killed the hype over the restaurant.
We ended up at the Hofbrauhaus bar next door where no reservations were needed. Pork knuckle and kransky was nice.
M. S.
Fantastic choices of traditional Bavarian food and bier.
Hofbräuhaus satisfied my craving for sauerkraut, which was perfectly done.
I will return to try the pork knuckle, as well as the schnitzels.
D. W.
A fantastic german styled bar with authentic beers and fantastic food. The bar is not to loud and has a wonderful ambiance. next time i am in the city i will deffenetly be dropping in for a good feed and a nice cold beer.
H. W.
Consistently great food, top shelf service - friendly and efficient. And of course the hefeweizen is a must!
J. K.
Great live music.Food average but atmosphere is really good.
D. M.
We have been coming to Hofbrauhaus for many years and it only gets better every time. Had my birthday party there last night for 25 people and what a blast we all had. Food was amazing. Great job guys and thank you for staying open till everyone was ready to go. We will see you all again very soon.
V. L.
Wonderful atmosphere. Great tasting food and generous portions. And to top it all they serve really good beer!
K. A.
Not as vibrant as the original HB in Munich but the beer is good.
S.
The food and service was fantastic, the pork belly, pork knuckle and sausages were so delicious, however the restaurant is not as family friendly as it used to be. It's very dark inside and extremely noisy (due to heaps of young adults - massive headache) and the entertainment was good, but again, not as good as it used to be. Its become much more westernized. Would come back for the food, but thats about it.
J. D.
I was extremely challenged by the Pork Shank. It was an appropriate size to match the 1L steins of German draught beer.
The ambiance is very traditional and cozy, despite it being a rather large restaurant.
Live entertainment was fantastic. Dancing, singing, live music -- all traditional German of course.
I got the impression you need to book to get a seat, so call in advance.
J. U.
Super tasty food. Giant beers. Lovely service. What more could you ask for? Marlene was an excellent host and made my families night really enjoyable!
J. C.
Great Food (go with a large group and order a few share platters). Service isn't bad, but can take time to get attention of staff at the restaurant is always busy.
J. S.
Normally, I would mark an establishment like this as a 4 to 4.5. The bier and food was good and worthy of a higher rating. HOWEVER, there was one mitigating detractor that cost them a star. This is not an official Haufbrau House, just a bar/restaurant that stole the name. I was actually looking forward to going to one of the genuine establishments, but felt like I had been duped. Not a bad evening, but it was not a Haufbrau one either.
L. S.
I have been here a few times and was really impressed. However I went here tonight and was really shocked on how downhill it has gone in 6 months. If anyone knows me, I always order the same food everywhere I go so I can definately notice when something isnt right. Smaller serves, schnitzel crumb has changed and no longer authentic. Horrible presentation and sides gone downhill. Salad was lovely and mixture with beautiful dressing. Tonight was a few lettuce leaves and two pieces of cherry tomato. Very very shocked. As a german myself, this place has let me down.
M. K.
Had a really good time here, had an early dinner with a group before a 7:30 show and the food was nice and fast. Great schnitzel and 1L steins, and a live band at 7pm on Friday
J. T.
First time visited, good food, great service and wonderful staff. An engaging band that brought everyone of race and age together to have fun. We will be back again. Wow
R. N.
Very attentive service. Good atmosphere and good food. Recommend to drop in for a beer after work!
S. L.
Great beer, great fun ! lovely food!
S. G.
Great atmosphere and lovely place, just a little pricey
A. M.
I had the potatoes with bacon and onion and a serve of seasonal veg. The veg was fantastic, the potatoes left a lot to be desired.
Very cold inside.
The service was lovely so I gave this place a 4
s.
Fantastic beer, great atmosphere and huge portions of delicious food.
What's not to like?
Haha ok so I may be abit drunk but I love this place!
Update:
Sober now, my oppinion has not changed :)
N. B.
Was looking for something a little different so decided to head for some German fare. The schnitzel was good, the crumb and gypsy sauce went well, Chips and sauerkraut were good accompaniments. The Weiss wurst and pretzels were also well done.
R. S.
Market as best German restaurant of Melbourne (only one?), i was not impressed...
food is nothing so special and something (e.g. spatzle) is quite far to taste as in Germany.
is a place good for students and friend's gangs that like to make chaos, drink liter of beer (so and so) while waiting for roasted pork's shanks...
is ok for once, but if like me you are a BIZ traveller and globe trotter... i suggest to find something else more classy
T. S.
Live music and having the staff dressed to theme make the place a good experience.
Meats are tender and plenty of flavour, but you must have the Stein with each meal
D. M.
Food was fantastic, the table was terrible. We were a table 2 sat next to a very large group of guys. Didn't hang around as we couldn't hear each other over the shouting
C. H.
Always love going here. Wonderful food (huge servings), great atmosphere, friendly service. If you go, make sure to leave room for apple strudel!
F. V.
Just amazing. Must visit.
M. K.
Went here for a friend's birthday party post lockdown. Food was great and staff were excellent.
G. R.
Fantastic beers and very filling delicious meals. Excellent service and a great atmosphere. Would definitely go back again.
J. C.
The food are really nice with the choices of large shared meal good for eating as a group. The live music at night was really lively and creates a very traditional bar atmosphere
P. M.
Hidden little location down the laneway but it's a good spot with great selection of beers with really good service. Went for lunch and had the $12 schnitzel special for a great deal.
C. G.
Food was amazing. My cousin loved the Pilsner. Only negative feedback is that we waited for an hour for the good to arrive. Next time expecting faster service.
M. J.
Tasty Bavarian food and great Atmosphere (even on a Sunday evening). The live music was excellent but the Highlight is the beerlist which offers a wide range of beers from independent small brewerys and not those big brand industrial beers.
I took a a group of international friends and everyone was commenting on how great the food was.
Great Job Hoffbraeuhaus.
R. D.
Fantastic night. Food was amazing. Entertainment was top notch the band played awesome songs. Everything was great. Will definitely be back.
N. M.
Food was overpriced, even the student deals had wimpy portions. Although the bratwurst was tasty, I wish it were a bit more browned.
Beer was good though!
D. P.
Gr8 evening with attentive staff and Management looking after everyone's needs, Covid-19 safety, and such a happy, balmy night in Dockland's bestest venue! Crim 🇦🇺
