The best fish and chips I've had in years. The chips are crunchy, fish is fresh and tasty. My daughter loved it. And it's a nice short walk from South Melbourne Market. You can grab a coffee a few stores down.

Me and my colleague had our lunch on Friday. I tried the hunky meal pack, which I loved . It’s super healthy - has broccoli, beans, shredded cabbage, bell pepper, lemon, rice and 2 fish fillets. The quantity was heavy for me but it was only for $15. The kids burger is amazing too, comes with chips and ketchup. Definitely gonna visit soon!

Awesome fish & chips place! The fish was very fresh and everything was cooked to perfection. The salads were delicious (quality ingredients and damn tasty). The portions are huge but they provide takeaway containers if you can't finish. The staff are super friendly and kept coming around to check up on us even though we were sitting outside. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, though it did get pretty crowded during dinner time. I ordered the Grilled Seafood & Salad plate which came with a whole filet of fish, 2 prawns, and like 5 calamari strips on top of a bed of salad (I got half garden salad and half Hunky Hero salad). I usually can't eat that much food but it was so delicious I finished my entire plate and then some :) If you upgrade your salad like I did, I would definitely recommend getting half and half otherwise the portion of the salad is huge. Ketchup and chili sauce is free here but sauces like tartar, aioli, etc. are $2 each (for a little saucer). There's a couple of locations around Melbourne so check to see which is closest to you!

UBER DELIVERY REVIEW - OK WITHOUT BEING GREAT In these new COVID times it seems that we are all ordering-in more. Home delivered food is never as well presented as in-restaurant dining and the trip between restuarant and home can play havoc with temperature and item separation! We ordered dinner on a Friday night: two grilled fish packs, chips and some potato cakes. The fish packs came as a fillet of grilled fish, served on a bed of rice or chips and a side salad. You get a few choices of fish (at varying prices) but I thought my lowest cost basa fillet was as good as my dining mate's more expensive fillet. The chips were OK but had cooled a bit too much and lost their crispness. The green salad was great - a mix of asian greens and broccoli cooked just right. The green salad was OK. The potato cakes were a bit too oily for our taste but, again, that may have been exacerbated by the "not quite hot" temperature. Hunky Dory dine - in is very good but this home delivered version doesnt reach that same standard.

Got the vegan fish called 'the new school' Lots of chips and salad, but a very lame 2 nuggets of fish for the nearly $20 it costs. Not what we expected. Great fish and chips. Part of the Hunky Dory chain, the fish is always fresh and often go the fried option (yes grilled is available). Great salads and always super friendly staff. Plenty of seating inside and out although in summer you may have to wait a few minutes for an outside table. Bonus - they are licensed.

This is not just a local fish and chips shop. The seafood in this place is fresh, cooked perfectly, and delicious. We tried Barramundi pack with brown rice and slaw, so yummy, rice is cooked to perfection, fresh salad, fish is cooked really well with crispy skin. Service is really good. I ordered my dinner here on Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised at how good this restaurant was. Everything from the flake, to the calamari, chips and potato cakes were cooked to perfection. I’ve ordered Uber eats through Hunky Dory South Melbourne a few times and seeing what they write on the bags always brings a smile to my face but a few nights ago when I ordered online and received a call from one of the staff members asking if I’d like her to bring my food out to my car. I was just blown away by this generosity!! Such a beautiful act of kindness during such a tough time for everyone and really wonderful customer services. It meant that I did not have to get out of my car and walk past people, touch door handles etc to pick up my food. Excellent service, grill was off early but they offered to fry (best decision we ever made). The fish was spectacularly delicate, juicy, fresh (still tasted like the sea), the batter was not heavy or tough but rather light and crisp (ordinarily I hate battered fish). The rice is brown rice (which i personally like) but if you aren't use to it, please remember that it's much firmer. The Greek salad was fantastic, generous serving, creamy feta with also generous amount of it! We got surprise chips and sauces! Yes that's right, surprise chips for 2! These were nicely seasoned, crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. All deep fried food did not have a heavy greasy texture, it was lovely clean oil (as if the oil is regularly changed) The staff were helpful, friendly, and the service was quick. Between 2 people we paid about 35-40 bucks including drinks, walked away full and happy!

The presentation of the food was superb. Staff was super helpful in our case. The only downside for us was the space inside the restaurant, it was a little small for our convenience but manageable. I reckon next time we'll sit outside as they've made provision for that. Overall, Hunky Dory we'll surely come again for your service.

The food was nice, service was good, just the pigeons outside and inside are a problem, knowing 100s of pigeons have been walking all over the tables, plates etc. Even inside where the folded window is, daily, makes me not want to return. Not to mention whilst you are eating they are flying and fluttering past literally 10 cm away from your head, a real shame and my only reason for a 3 star review. Maybe install a flyscreen accros the folded window even a retractable one so they don't fly in and ravage plates? Outside have a plastic cover to shield street table diners, even if it is halfway rolled down? Unfortunately the spikes you have just aren't doing it. Thanks for the nice food and service though 👍

Since then I have been a regular [1x a week or every second week], either eating inside/outside [before COVID-19] or for home deliveries during restrictions. They have restaurants scattered around Victoria and are always busy. They have a good mix of healthy and fried options. My recommendations: 1. Check out their salads - great on their own or with some fish. Range $6.50 - $9.50 2. The marinated, grilled calamari is exceptional as a snack or larger meal. $15.90 3. The Hunky Dory - fried flake, chips, dim sim and potato cake, plus 2 tubs of their tasty tartare sauce. $14 Usually great value for money and taste. The place just hums, the staff are well managed and there is a consistency about the place after me going there for months now as I live in Southbank. The manager is a real character and his passion for quality is obvious, the place is immaculate - he must work really hard to maintain this as the place is shiny and clean. I love my food and never return to crap houses but Hunky Dory in Clarendon St gets my vote. My missus in Welsh and she said that the chips are the best shes ever had.. The fish is very consistent and the other bits and pieces like scalllops and potato cakes are all to a high standard. You order calamari ask for tartare sauce and they give you a nice big tub on tartare, not some crappy thimble sized container. You order 1 potato cake in a big order, they give you 2 (the second on the house), just like a real fish and chip of the old days. The place is far better than the quite ordinary Port Melbourne shop. Recommend the fried beer batter flake.

Then I decided this is rediculas I just want a burger but nope, so I went for a lental burger. Couldn't be done. Turns out it was just too hard to make a burger, which was an understandae reason. Wish I heard that at the start and didn't waste all my time being confused and frustrated, staff made it up with a free beer and some chocolate and gave me the lental burger. They came around! Only reason I dropped the fourth star off was because of the random, not at all appealing, sweaty old dude DJing and scratching records out the front super loud, although entertaining, certainly unnessacary.
