Papa Gino’s serves up an affordable and hearty traditional Italian/Australia pizza. This is definitely one of the more low key eateries on Lygon, but from an unassuming store front, you’ll find friendly service and a lovely meal. If you prefer your dining experience to be just that, away from the social media hype, Papa Gino’s is definitely a good choice for a Italian lunch or dinner.

We’ve been coming to this restaurant for years and it’s about time I left a review to express how much we like it. The staff are attentive but not intrusive, the atmosphere is lively and loud - the way we like it and the food is always fantastic. Highly recommend the calamari - absolute winner with our whole family. Thank you for having us and many of our friends and family. Looking forward to many more - salud!

I wish I would give this place more stars!!! Whether dining in, taking away or getting home delivery, papa ginos will always come out on top and delight your tastebuds. Probably the best and most authentic Italian food I have had in Melbourne. Friendly staff, rustic decor, and great location. The food is just unreal - fresh pastas and pizzas, the gnocchi is to die for. Legit one of my favourite places to eat ever. Have been coming here for years and don’t plan on stopping!

The service is 100000/10, very caring and friendly. Highly recommend their super special pizza. And the pasta with garlic oil is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻😍😍😍. Later we dipped the bread in the garlic oil and cleaned the plate completely. I would say their tiramisu is top 3 in Melbourne. The dark choc on top adds a crunchy texture and another layer of flavour. Love this restaurant!

Great pizza made by Italians. I’ve been coming here for the last thirty years and always get good quality Italian food at a reasonable price. Staff are always friendly and attentive. Also, it was great to see the staff were taking the Chief Health Officer’s COVID-19 directions seriously and the health and safety of it’s patrons is paramount by the way they were checking everyone in. I feel that if they are doing this properly where we can see them, they will also be hygienic where they are preparing our food and can’t see them. Great work.

Needed a lighter lunch and headed to @PapaGinosCarlton for a small pizza #11 marescialla with cheese - tomato, ham, black olives, spices and bacon. It didn't take long and a steaming hot pizza was in front of eyes in no time. Crispy base that is not thick but holds firm, the first bite is lovely, excellent mix of ingredients with lovely flavour. Like the saltiness of the anchovies, black olives and bacon, slight oiliness from the cheese, gooey and yum with each bite, the tomato balances it all out. It's been a family (and personal) favourite for around two decades, now. I always try to bring friends here and they love it too. This place is my new go-to for an affordable yet absolutely delicious dinner. The servings are huge, being able to choose your pasta + sauce separately is awesome, and the garlic focaccia with mozzarella is seriously divine… cheese on top as well as inside the focaccia, amazing! Make sure you try the Pasta e Fagioli also 😍

It’s a nice big place, you have outside seating as well. We had pasta and pizza here, lovved all of them. Food is amazing, and also they give good quantity for large. Beverages are comparatively less pricey and good too. Staff is very friendly and helping. Pizza was real thin crust and had good qty topping:) Would definitely visit again, there are couple more things I would like to taste here. Even vegetarians have options here. You can select the sauce n pasta n request for customisation.

Enjoyed garlic bread as Entree with a Rose speaking BYO as this place welcomed BYO’s ($4 corkage fee); Then a super special pizza, polo Ali Fungi; my little one loved her spaghetti Bolognese and everyone else on our group was happy with their food. One of many Italian restaurants on Lygon St. It has a heated outdoor area along with a traditional indoor seated area. The staff were friendly and approachable, our meals were ready in a reasonable time. We shared a Margherita pizza to start with, it was OK. For our main meals we had gnocchi puttanesca, penne Al funghi and chicken parmigiana, these were also OK. Papa Gino's is reasonably priced, a familiar standard across Lygon St.

Been going to Papa Gino for many years. It's quite popular in Melbourne, especially for nearby uni students. It's famous for its big servings, good pizzas and good prices.

Yummy, fast and great service. There’s lot of Italian places in Lygon street but this is a popular spot for lots of people. It’s simple, it’s filling, the portions are huge! An entree size would be more than enough. Highly recommend giving this place a try. The focaccia was quite yummy, the pastas were good too. The chocolate mousse is very rich and intense, it’s good for me but if you don’t want something too sweet, the tiramisu or crepe could more up your alley.

EARTHY ITALIAN FOOD SERVED GENEROUSLY Papa Gino's is a go-to place for those seeking a reasonably priced, full-plated meal in Carlton. On this occasion I am reviewing the Uber Eats version... food just as good.. but of course, missing the usual ambience :) Large serves (when you order "main" that are probably sufficient for 3 people. The soups are very good - expecially the vegetable rice ministrone variant! Pizza and pizza braeds are good option as a side or entree.

I have known Papa Gino's since my high school days. Whilst I don't go to Carlton often as I like, it is definitely one of if not my favourite Italian restaurant in Melbourne! Went for the risotto marinara in a main serve today and tastes as excellent as I can remember from my last visit. Furthermore, everything else is also excellent value for money. Definitely will return when I'm in the area and crave for Italian food.

Been going here since I was old enough to eat solids. This is my family go-to. They don't stand outside sprooking customers and pushing you to eat there like everyone else on Lygon. Staff are lovely with a sense of humour, the pizzas are cooked so quickly and they're delicious! The pasta is amazing too and you get it with free bread. Their steak game is pretty flat, but if you're going to Lygon Street for steak, that's your 1st mistake right there so stick to the Italian food and you'll love it.

This is the BEST place on Lygon Street!! I have being going to Papa Gino's for many years, perhaps close to a decade actually!! No matter how busy this restaurant gets, you will always be greeted with a smile and warm service!! I remember the first time I went here with my best friend. We ordered 2 mains and an entrée which is what you would typically do. The food came out and was HUGE!! I mean we ate it because YUM... But we were soo full, we could barely get back to the car haha Ever since then, we get entrée sized meals and are still beyond full. This place in it's entirety is so generous and humble! LOVE IT!

We brought interstate friends here for the first time late 2019 as we couldn't get a booking elsewhere given late notice. Both parties brought kids and found Papa Gino's to have a real family atmosphere. Kids were present at most tables and the staff warm and friendly. We didn't feel rushed and and had a great feast of pizza and pasta. Seeing the pizza being tossed was great entertainment for the kids also. I couldn't find fault with anything and look forward to visiting again.

I've been coming to Papa Gino's since I was a kid, always have happy memories of eating here. Great pizza - you can see them rolling and flipping the dough in the window, always cool to see. I love the napoletana - delicious little anchovies! I think one medium pizza is enough for a person, a large should probably be shared. The pasta is pretty great - nice lasagna though the main is huge! I find the entree to be filling enough. Nice selection of drinks, on the weekend there can sometimes be a line but we've never had to wait too long. And it's worth the wait!

There was a pretty long wait on a Sunday evening. Upon being seated, it took over 40 minutes before our order was taken. We were not provided with any table service until we demanded it, leading to nearly an hour before water was provided. Eventually our food arrived and it was very tasty. The pasta stood out as well balanced for a cream based sauce.

Papa Gino's has been a family favourite of mine for a long time, the food is always great, especially for sharing pasta and pizza. The spaghetti marinara is absolutely amazing, the pizza is always great with a thin and crispy base and the veal/chicken dishes are always delicious but obviously not the star of the restaurant. Run by fun and kind staff however a little inattentive. Very small and cozy internal seating however outside seating is extensive. Highly recommended!

This restaurant had a distinctive and authentic Italian feel to it. It has a long history and my family have been coming here for years. No bookings are available, so when it's busy in the evenings you often have to queue up outside. The menu is simple but the food is great! Generous servings and fairly prompt service. The staff seemed a little disinterested but other than that, it's a solid place to dine. Good for groups, perhaps not too great for families with young children.

Best value you get out of the large and medium pizzas, avoid the small size. This place is always packed with people. Being a frequent patron, the food is good to very good, relatively inexpensive and the waiting staff and owners are always friendly. The service is usually quick, even when it's busy. They don't take any bookings, you just show up and wait in line, if there is one. It usually gets busy at 5.30, on Fridays and weekends but patron turnover is high, so the waiting isn't long.

Semi-regular visitors to this classic joint. The gnocchi is delightful and soft and fluffy, but the carbonara yesterday was a bit too 'eggy' for my liking. Still, our son devoured it. My wife and I shared a medium Mexican pizza. Quite spicy with lots of chilli flakes and hot red chilli slices. Service is friendly but was a tad slow yesterday. Maybe because of school holidays (?). The place gets packed most times, so either book (not sure if you can, unless for a big group) or get there really early. The out-back toilets are dingy, but I guess they add character (?) to the place.
