@thecrane_melb, Chinatown 📍Never noticed this little chinese restaurant previously so was very excited to check it out! It’s a two storey gem. Their menu is on a digital iPad and they have so much yummy chinese food on offer! 🇨🇳
Signature hot & spicy Sichuan chinese fried chicken 🔥 and the green beans with spicy chicken were my top picks!! 😻 we also ordered XLB, and quite a feast of dumplings !
T.
This restaurant is located in the heart of Chinatown in Melbourne. The service is welcoming and friendly.
The menu is extensive, with a good selection of dishes.
I tried the
- Pork Dumplings
- Fried wontons
- Cantonese Roasted Duck
- Diced Chicken w peanuts in Szechwan Chilli Sauce.
The dumplings were light and tasty, with some good flavour. The roasted duck was moorish, the skin crispy and the meat had a soy flavour.
The fried wontons were great, and still a little juicy in the middle.
The diced chicken was yummy, I really enjoyed the spice, and the peanuts worked well.
The addition of some Japanese beers was a winner.
Thanks for the invite.
T. N.
great little spot for all your dumplings and noodle goods!
found in Melb's China Town (and conveniently located towards Swanston St end). they have such a big menu and everything i got did not disappoint!
service is super quick! loved it! u also order off their tablet - gotta love ordering with pics hehe
XLBs are always a must for me hehehe - but u def needa check out their chilli chicken! (dw folks. its not THAT spicy.. its more a low-medium spice but is full of flavour!! one of my favs!)
they serve up HK Milk Teas and a few other fun sodas, and they are also certified to serve alcohol and they have plenty to choose from too!
great spot for casual catch ups with mates over dumplings!
X. C.
My favorite restaurant in Chinatown, great service and reasonable price, especially the lunch special sets.
Have been a regular customers over 5yrs, the delicious food make me miss my hometown. Strongly recommend to those love Chinese cuisine.

Two of us came to The Crane in Chinatown on a Tuesday night. We ordered the mandarin pork, pan-fried pork dumplings and stir fried noodles. It was quite busy and so the food took a while to arrive, but once it did we were very pleased because it tasted delicious. Thank you very much to all the staff at The Crane, including the waiters and chefs!
A. S.
very nice shop with lots choices on their menu, the staffs are very considerate, my grandpa has diabete that he has to eat asap when we arrived, so the staffs putted some of our order at the front so my grandpa can have something to eat quickly. and they are very quick responding. i didn't give 5 only because the meals are a bit salty for me——but may be just right for some other people.
T. K.
A nice Chinese restaurant at Melbourne Chinatown. Pork San Choy Bow and dumplings were awesome, special fried rice was ok but overall it’s a good Chinese restaurant. Melbourne you have some grrreat Chinese food
A. W.
Amazing food, really great pork dumplings and Mongolian beef!!! Friendly and fast service too!
C. S.
The dumplings are quite good. Prices are a little exy. Try the jellyfish, it is actually delicious.
M. V.
Beware - when you go up to pay they will try to say there is a $30 minimum if you use card. (-2 stars)
I went to the Crane restaurant for dinner on a Friday night. The venue is small & seating is squished, but the food I’ve tried is really good.
You order on iPads, and the friendly staff will help you if you’re having trouble.
The steamed vegetarian dumplings are green, and delicious.
It’s a nice place to eat, but making up this $30 card minimum, and only telling your customers after they have ordered is very deceiving & cheap. Our dinner came to ~$20 and they actually tried to make us buy drinks at the till to make the total to $30+
b.
my favourite place to dine in along this street! service is always great, the food always surprises me with how good it is, fast service and also i love the self-order method they have it's so fun. priced a bit more than i would normally pay but still priced decently well considering location and quality of food.
J. W.
Everything is so delicious at Crane 🤤 so many options and so reasonably priced! Staff were super friendly too
C. V.
We have eaten here several times now and the food never disappoints. Good, old fashioned, delicious food ordered the the new fashioned way via ipad. We tried the barbecued duck and l have to say it was probably the best l have had in Melbourne.
h. l.
Great service and reasonable price in china town
j. c.
The Crane Restaurant in the swanston street end of China town is me and my wifes restaurant of choice in China Town. The staff are super friendly and helpful. You order your meals off an ipad, which is very modern, and meals arrive quickly. The food is delicious whether chick pork or seafood is chosen. They have alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available of your choice. Make your next meal destination The Crane Restaurant in China Town you will not be disappointed.
M. Y.
The menu is never-ending and encompassing. However, the Sweet & Sour Scallops were well worth remembering.
H. J.
Amazing restaurant right in the middle of the CBD! It might look seedy from outside, but once your in the staff and environment is amazing. Very quite on the Monday night when we went. I must say we were thrilled to be able to order our own food on the iPad.
I think more restaurants need to do this, especially foreign ones were there may be a language barrier.
The dumplings were to die for, you must order the honey duck and the house special fried rice was amazing. Everyone on our table left full and happy! Highly recommend, you must visit if passing through Melbourne’s Chinatown precinct!
C.
Fish soup was nice ( with spicy tasty)
Fried rice also good👍🏻
M. C.
Loved it! Delicious food & reasonably priced. It was getting busy but the service was pretty good there was always someone around when we needed. Definitely will be returning.
R. M.
Great find!!! Great crab and fried rice! Quick service and friendly staff
S. G.
What can I say? Never have I seen a wait staff sprint from kitchen to table with such sheer determination as I witnessed today. He was the only staff serving a full restaurant and I was impressed with his deftness and perseverance in the face of challenge. Give that man a pay rise! The food was also tasty - recommend the veggie dumplings
S. J.
Dumpling were good, reasonably priced aswell. BYO includes a corking fee. Wait staff was also very kind and helpful.
Z. B.
I had prawn dumplings & fried rice. it was scrumptious. waited 10 minutes for dumplings & 20 mins for rice . service not bad.. moderately busy.
b. m.
Been going here for the last 7years, fantastic food - really recommend the satay chicken and vegetables and the best chicken and prawn dumplings. They have a great lunch menu from 11.30am to 4.30pm all around $10. Staff always remember you, are friendly and very nice
J. T.
Fresh and delicious food, and friendly waiter service.
L. M.
Delicious food and quick service. I recommend lemon chicken and crane special fried rice.
C. F.
We hope this restaurant can survive during this difficult time. We want to come back again once the restrictions left.
B. H.
Delicious food and waiter was really friendly and helpful. Interesting order system via tablet but offered to assist as needed. Food came out fairly promptly.
B. V. R.
This place has a very quaint and homey feel to it, it’s simple but very comfortable. The staff is pretty standard, not overly friendly but polite. More than anything, the best part of this place was the food! Super super delicious prawn dumplings, satay lamb and teriyaki chicken. All the food is very authentic and good quality and they give me a fairly large serving size. Price can be a bit much but overall not bad for what you get. I will be going back again.
M. W.
An excellent little Chinese restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. The staff were very professional and attentive. There were literally hundreds of options on the menu, all very well priced and quick to arrive. The food was delicious - polished off the plates easily. Can't fault it - a very enjoyable experience.
G. A.
Fantastic service, great food. Will return.
B. B.
Friendly staff but slow on food and when it arrived was rather poor.
I guess a low occupancy restaurant in Chinatown at 9pm should have sounded the alarm bells.
Lesson learnt
R. W.
Nice restaurant with good Cantonese food. The service is fast and friendly. Although they use ipads to order, the helpful staff was there to guide us where to find specific menu items we were after. We had the pig intestine with pickled mustard stone pot rice and also the fish with pickled mustard noodles and both were good standard. The rice was a bit oily, but that's generally the case for Cantonese food. The most surprising part was the price! $21 for the both of us! Amazing value. Will be back.
C. K.
In the middle of Chinatown. The restaurant has two floors with ample space to sit down and eat.
They are super quick to serve you the wait time is minimal. Got some liquor including saake. I think they do cook fresh but I'm not sure if the fish was just a decoration.
Good place to enjoy a nice dinner with family. Choices from pork, beef, chicken to sea food. Try the beef and chicken they seem to be better than other dishes.
R. A.
Was looking around Chinatown for a good chinese restaurant for a date.
Decided to go here and was very very satisfied with the food.
I ordered the salt and pepper pork and it was delicious.
The bbq pork buns and shanghai dumplings were great. Everything else I ordered was very good.
10/10
D. G.
Great food
Top place to eat in China Town
M. M.
We really enjoyed their foods and services.
Everything what we ate were delicious. We will go back to the resturant again.
Highly recommend this resturant.
J. H.
Trust me, you are gonna love here. One of the best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. The staff was kind and interesting
E. L. T. Y. F. S. C. A.
Spring onion cake, vegetarian Dumplings must try.
a. r.
So good,nice food
F. G.
Place has a good energy / good feel about it unlike many Chinese restaurants
L. J.
Great food. Great value. IPad ordering hasn't worked for us when we've been there. Happy to go old school on that and get the very friendly staff to assist. The Crane is our favourite Chinatown restaurant.
C.
Food was fast and fresh, was awesome being able to order straight through the tablet. Staff was great and the food was amazing. We all left with super full bellies and the price was pretty reasonable.
M. B.
What can I say. The food here is dynamite. Honestly by far the best Chinese food I have eaten. Look forward to coming back and dining here again.
L. H.
The best Mongolian beef I have ever had. Using the tablets to order meant the waitor had time to top up drinks and help us more. Nice place and nice atmosphere. Staff were polite although they did not talk much (nothing wrong with that).
M. P.
Quite a busy venue and food was better than expected. Spicy Eggplant with Mince Pork was tasty. In need of a refurb and replacement of all dishware - Not too impressed with all the plates having cracks along the sides.
D. S.
I like this place. Staff is not friendly, because of Chinese habits to be serious.. so don't be disappointed. Take a set for 2 people for 36$ and enjoy. They so huge so it will be enough for 4 persons:)
A.
Excellent service, workers are very eager to please. Nice and clean. Great value for money with an extensive menu. Food was cooked perfectly. White person friendly. Good choice for out-of-towners
M. D.
Nice food good value for money
N. M.
Been here twice now. Both times we found the food good, the cordage better at $3 a head.
Recommend the half duck, very crispy skin and juicy meat. The clay pot eggplant and Mongolian beef were good but other dishes may be better.
Only caveat is, late weekend nights may also involve nosy patrons taking advantage of the cheap corkage.
k.
Super convenient! Comprehensive menu. They give you an iPad when you arrive at your table so you can do your own ordering. Really quick and they offer takeaway as well. The boss was very kind :)
B. A.
The food is your standard Chinese. The customer service is lacking. Gave us a main meal first we then had to ask for our rice as they forgot. Our entre came out last with our drinks. Was very odd experience.
J. y.
cheap and quality ? hell yes !! and amazing order systems, all dish come with pictures on their e-menu, lunch special is a blessed !! so good and so cheap ! nearly come once a week !
D. C.
Nice food. A little slow to check on drinks refills once you hand the order tablet over you have to wait to find a staff member for your next drink. But we went a couple times and I would definately go back.
P. D.
Very good service and reasonable price. We had the $49 set menu for 3 people - we had 2 kids also - and there was loads to eat for all 5 of us.
J. Z.
Food is top notch! Decent size portions. They have a digital ordering system which we thought was really neat. Theres a pic for pretty much everything that way too.
D. S.
Food is delish but I wasn't given option to order from the iPad ordering system. Customer service a bit to be desired for but meal arrived rapidly and did not disappoint. Braised barramundi with pork and rice. Be aware it is a whole barramundi fish, with head, tail and all
A. H.
Dumplings on point! Pork belly soup hit the spot too!
P. R.
Great authentic restaurant. Would visit again.
E. B.
Great place for a lunch-time meal. Hot tea and hot dishes, with plenty of variety.
It has a novel way of taking orders using a tablet.
S. W.
Being greeted on entry by a fine young gentleman was the start of a lovely dining sesh. He asked "how many?" I said "2"
He lead us to a dining table, suited for four persons. Win. We were handed an ipad with an exquisite selection of dishes to order from. I started with the vb (victoria bitter) accompanied with the pork dumplings and may I say, combo of the lords. Followed by small fried rice with sweet and sour pork and salt n pepper calamari and 3 more vb's. This is a top tier chinatown joint get on lads.
L. W.
Absolutely superb sweet & sour pork and deep fried rice with exceptional customer service. Cannot recommend highly enough.
D. J.
Good food, pretty reasonably priced. You get to order on a tablet which speeds up the ordering process. It can get quite busy sometimes though.
L. W.
Great food and obliging staff after booking mixup. Worked hard to accomodate a large group. Really impressed with the banquet option we had.
I. L.
Walked past and decided to give it s go. The dumplings are quite nice, some dishes are overpriced for the portion size. The staff are helpful for a Chinese restaurant
L.
Some pretty good dumplings
D. B.
Reliably delicious food, unpretentious, very reasonably priced.
r. r.
good service and barramundi dish was good value
G. H.
Had a great schezuen beef soup for lunch, spicy meat with noodles and a rich full broth. Prices are very reasonable.
M. W.
Excellent customer service, meals came out really quick, we tried 4 different options and all were really nice, chicken, pork, beef, and dumplings.
M. B.
Good for a quick meal. The food was ok. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
D. P.
Very friendly and helpful service. Atmosphere is ok. Food is good, but just average unfortunately.
S. W.
